Ocean's Eleven (2008)

Ocean's Eleven"Ocean's Eleven" is a Ferrari of a movie: cool, stylish, and classy. And if, like a Ferrari, it doesn't always work, that's OK who will complain when it's so stylish?

The premise is lifted right out of the 1960 Rat Pack original: Danny Ocean (George Clooney, suave as hell) is released from prison, and plots to steal over $163 million from the vault of a Las Vegas casino during a heavyweight fight. He recruits his old buddy Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), and they put together a dream team of crooks, each of whom has a specialty. There's a computer geek, a demolition expert, a con man, a pickpocket, and so on.

And, of course, there's Danny's ex-wife, Tess (Julia Roberts), who's now involved with the manager (Andy Garcia) of the casino Danny intends to rob. So, Danny's not only after money he wants his girl back as well. But she's having nothing of it, as evidenced by this neat dialogue piece:

Danny: "I've paid my debt to society."

Tess: "Funny, I haven't gotten my check yet."

Dialogue like that is one of the great pleasures of this movie; watching it delivered by the likes of Clooney, Roberts, Pitt and the stellar supporting cast (Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Elliott Gould, et al) is the other.

And, in fairness, it's a good thing that the dialogue and acting is so good, because as a pure caper flick, "Ocean's Eleven" is, to be charitable, a little thin. In the best caper movies ("The Heist" comes to mind), the theft itself is the star of the movie the intracicies, the backup plans, the intrigue. In "Ocean's Eleven," we're expected to believe that a casino with over $150 million in its vault wouldn't have a backup power generator, or that the vault's security system wouldn't have a motion sensor.

But criticisms like that are akin to nitpicking that red Ferrari 575 because it has a small trunk the point isn't realism, it's style, and like a Ferrari, "Ocean's Eleven" has it in droves.

### ABOUT THE 4 FILM FAVORITES SERIES ###

Warner Brothers/New Line's "4 Film Favorites" is a line of two-disc sets consisting of four films that are part of a series/franchise or center around a common theme. Each disc is dual-sided, with the contents of each side being a bit-for-bit copy (a "disc image") of a previous DVD release. Usually the very first DVD release of a film is used as the master for each side, which could be either single-layer or dual-layer. If the DVD master that is used first came out at the infancy of DVD production (the late 1990s), there may be little to no extras, and even a poor film transfer when compared to a later re-release. Also, if that original release was a two-disc set, or a dual-sided disc (see: Lethal Weapon 4), only Disc 1 or Side A will be used. The "4 Film Favorites" line is priced with the budget-conscience consumer in mind, with Target having the lowest price at 9.99 each (occasionally on sale for 8.99). Other stores will inevitably be priced higher, though I don't recommend paying more than ten dollars for each two-disc set.

I've got to admit, half the fun of this movie is the star-gazing. George Clooney is great as a convict recently released from jail, Brad Pitt is Mr. Suave as his right-hand man, and Julia Roberts plays the icy ex-wife beautifully. Throw in Matt Damon as a pick-pocket and Andy Garcia as a casino mogul and you've got the gist of this movie's star power.

The plot is pretty simple: Danny Ocean (Clooney) organizes a group of eleven highly skilled criminals to simultaneously rob three of Vegas' biggest casinos. Their plans are over the top and outrageous-and you can't help but smile watching them put into action. There are also some really memorable touches in the movie: including Brad Pitt teaching Shane West and Topher Grace how to play poker. This movie kind of serves as a who's-who in Hollywood. "Oceans" probably won't spark any deep conversations or teach you any life lessons, but it's fun watching the celebrities interact onscreen. If you want something deep and thought-provoking, this probably isn't your movie. But if you want to watch something purely for entertainment, this is a great and fun film.

Yeah, it's impossible, it's ridiculous, it's contrived, but you gotta love the acting and the chemistry between the actors. Only Julia Roberts' role was maybe a mismatch, and that's difficult for me to say as she's one of my favorites.

The 1960's original version with Frank Sinatra and the infamous Rat Pack was fun, too, but this contemporary one makes full use of all the modern cinema techniques that make action/adventure films such fun to watch.

The whole setup (a plan to rob several Las Vegan casinos owned by a guy who has `taken possession' of Danny Ocean's ex-wife) is convoluted and sometimes difficult to follow and frankly, rather than hit replay and try to figure it all out, I'd just advise suspending disbelief and going with the flow.

It's a hoot.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009)

The Private Lives of Pippa LeeIn a male-dominated industry like Hollywood, it is refreshing once in a while to watch a movie in which the main character is a woman (Robin Wright). It is additionally rewarding a bonus, if you will -if the director is also a woman (Rebecca Miller, who wrote the story). The result, "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee," is satisfying and remarkable. This film touches you and stays with you.

The story is about Pippa Sarkissian (Wright) who would later become Pippa Lee --, an attractive woman with a troubled past, reaching middle age, who is trying to get her life together. Her mother Suky (the always dependable Maria Bello) was moody and addicted to antidepressants, and was repulsed by Pippa when she was born, because she was hairy. However, this situation improved throughout the years, and Suky got very attached to Pippa. Unfortunately, her mother's problems persisted, and Pippa eventually had to leave home. After some time living carelessly by herself, she finds Herb Lee (Alan Arkin), a man thirty years her senior, who happens to be a successful publisher. They get married and life appears to be good for everyone. That is, until Pippa's past begins haunting her -a situation that is worsened by her current problems.

This is a real life drama, spiked with humor, especially provided by Wynona Ryder, in a surprising supporting role. It examines a woman's life that "keeps swinging back and forth from generation to generation, getting it wrong." Robin Wright shines as Pippa Lee, and Arkin as her husband. The magnificent cast also includes Blake Lively (as Pippa in her younger years) Monica Bellucci, Julianne Moore, Shirley Knight, and Keanu Reeves. The Blu-ray edition includes commentaries by Wright and Miller, and interviews with Wright, Arkin, and Lively. (USA, 2009, color, 98 min plus additional materials)

Reviewed by Eric Gonzales exclusively for on March 1, 2010.

My husband picked up this DVD on a whim, thinking I might like it, and he was right! "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" is a thoughtful, leisurely-paced drama about a woman who though anchored in a stable relationship in the present, is haunted by her turbulent past. Robin Wright Penn plays Pippa Lee, a sort of prim and proper wife to an aging yet indomitable older man, Herb (Alan Arkin). The couple have recently moved to a retirement community, though Herb, who has already suffered previous heart attacks, refuses to buckle down and lead a quiet life. Pippa who is 30 years younger than Herb, tries her utmost to take care of her husband, despite his protestations and suffers from exhaustion, finding herself spacing out, binge eating in the middle of the night (but having no recollections of it later), and finds herself experiencing flashback moments of her younger days.

The movie flows well between the past and the present. We see baby Pippa being initially shunned by her mother Suky (Maria Bello) for being overly hairy as an infant, and how this relationship changes over time. As Pippa grows (the teenage Pippa is played by Gossip Girl's Blake Lively), a close relationship forms between Suky and her daughter, but Suky's own deteriorating mental health and over-dependence on anti-depressants causes a friction in their relationship. Pippa runs away, meeting interesting characters along the way photographer (Julianne Moore), successful publisher Herb (Arkin),co-dependent friend (Winona Ryder in a great supporting role), and a store clerk (Keanu Reeves). Having settled down to a sedate married life, Pippa ponders her life's purpose, and some startling revelations throw her scheduled life off-balance.

Robin Wright delivers a finely nuanced performance, and the excellent supporting cast make this movie an above average viewing experience. There is a great deal of character development, insights, and self-introspection here a woman who has been so driven to care for others (husband, son, daughter), that she has lost her own identity along the way, choosing to 'settle' instead. Will Pippa Lee set herself free? The movie credibly addresses this question and the compelling performances by the lead actress and supporting cast make it a worthwhile watch.

Screen Media hardly ever puts any money into their BDs (as is the case here again) but Rebecca Miller put together a good story told in a less than simple way.

The story follows the life (if told lineally) of a woman from birth to her rebirth as an older woman (Robin Wright). Along this journey we jump back and forth in her time line as we see the different lives she has led. Mario Bello competently played her drug addled mother, Alan Arkin her much older husband, with some interesting short roles from Monica Belucci and Winona Ryder. The criticism I have read regarding confusion and casting choices to play the same person I can see having some validity, but I enjoyed the challenge of figuring things out while watching this. Keanu is once again picked to play a non-emotional role and he does it fine. The Blu quality is standard at times, above average in others. The vehicle motion scenes are difficult to figure out though, as they chose to film with the windows rolled up in each scene so the resulting reflections are always blurring the scenes really the only shortcoming of the Blu quality. The DTS gets used infrequently and the special feature of interviews from a screening lasts only a few minutes and is forgettable. The commentary was adequate but as admitted by Wright a little awkward to do at times.

You would be getting this for the performances alone, but I do not think there would be any significant disappointment in the BD either. No region coding listed, English and Spanish subs only.

It took a little while to warm up to Pippa Lee, but that's one of the things that makes this film so magical. We get to watch Pippa come out of the deep freeze and fully into her own being after a life of dissociation. The script is insightful and wonderful. The acting is superb. This film is a real treat.

My sister and i watched this film, she is married, i am single...and she enjoyed it immensely, while i found it dull and lacking. The movie navigates the liberation of Pippa (confused and frustrated Robin Wright Penn) and has it's moments, though it was depressing and predictable to me.

So, as most adults can relate in some manner to being trapped in a relationship....then find ourselves wondering how we got to this place? The movie draws on this commonality with a dual presentation of young Pippa and present day Pippa....(what a strange name?) Blake Lively does a fair job of playing the youthful Pippa, but there were moments when i was confused with what contribution, and meaning some of the characters had to the overall story...my sister confessed she was also finding it difficult to attach significance and relationship status to some of the actors.

So...Pippa's self reflection through herky jerky glimpses of her past---are a cinematic thrill of finding the puzzle pieces to Penn's character's present day existence. I do believe (IMHO) it is simply a modern day visualization of the imprisoned life of an unactualized woman. In the big picture, women, whose roles have been dynamically changing for decades...we have this passenger of life, Pippa who is stumbling along seeing the light in still frames of her memories. One bummer in the film is that men are not portrayed as very appealing in this movie. Nope, its not going to be a guy movie fave. Alan Arkin is a cad and after seeing all the eddies and currents that Pippa's lifeboat sailed through, i got the distinct impression of cardboard cutouts dreaming of becoming animated, infused with life. Something akin to "The Stepford Wife" seeking to be a "Desperate Housewife" with their joyous abandon and central life characters.

My sister loved this movie, going on about Keanua Reeves as the fantasy, fairy tale ending for a stale, invalid marriage. Pippa finds redemption through a much younger, hunkier, sensitive guy...ahem, is that all there is to life? Cinematography was good, acting was spot on, but the story has been told too many times. Sorry....just not going to make it as a recommendation.

A Fork in the Road (2009)

A Fork in the RoadWhat I'm rating here is the lead in to the movie because the producers do not allow me to skip over the filthy, subjective comments in this gross attempt at advertising. I purchased the movie because I wanted the movie. Since I paid for the DVD I should be allowed to go directly to the movie without watching any advertising. The first coming attractions were of SPRING 1941 and includes a man and a woman in the middle of hot, steamy sex. The next coming attraction is of STUNTMEN and what is pictured is a dirty old man being asked why he got into stuntwork and his answer is "Pussy". A little later a woman holding an nterview offers her opinion of real supreme as having a "Rhinoceros cock." I was throughly discusted not only with these previews but the fact that I was not allowed to avoid them and go directly to the movie. I do not feel the producer of this DVD has any right to force customers to watch these coming attractions prior to watching what was ordered. .

Found this movie on Netflix and loved it so much I had to buy it. Have lent it to friends and they bought it. It's definitely my kind of movie. If you live by Murphy's Law (What ever can go wrong, will go wrong) you'll appreciate it.

I wrote this film with Jim Kouf, who also directed it. Jim has written some very big features and I mostly write for Network TV. A couple of years ago, Jim got wind of some guys who wanted to put a few dollars into an independent film. So Jim and I sat down and decided to write a "studio" type film that we could do on a low-budget. We wanted to make a little black comedy, with the emphasis on comedy and also something that almost the whole family could see. We had a blast writing it and it was the first time in both of our careers that we wrote exactly what we wanted without a studio or a network looking over our shoulders and telling us what we could or couldn't do. We decided to shoot it in Montana because it's pretty easy to crew-up there with excellent people. Not only that but every time you turn the camera around, you've got a shot that makes your movie look like it cost a lot more than it did. We tested the movie in both L.A. and in Montana and our test audiences all laughed in the places we thought we're funny. Plus we got over eighty percent "recommends", which usually denotes a hit. However, for some reason we never did get a theatrical release. But, as you can see, it's now on DVD. It's got a terrific cast, a mixture of seasoned comic vets and some very funny new faces. We made this film so people could kick back and have a few laughs and forget about their day. We hope that's you.

Mac & Devin Go to High School (2012)

Mac & Devin Go to High SchoolEvery generation needs its great stoner comedies! Who better than vocal supporters of the smoke, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, to usher in a cool and contemporary new vision of high times at high school? Seemed like a great idea and I was actually rooting for "Mac and Devin Go To High School" to be a mind altering good time. Aside from a few amusing ideas, though, this Snoop Dogg production harshed my mellow. Painfully unfunny and utterly plotless, this barely even qualifies as a movie. Form start to finish, it runs just over an hour which includes two full musical numbers and a series of unrelated man-on-the-street interviews to serve as filler. Without these elements, it would be more like forty minutes. Even that might be acceptable if the movie offered any entertainment value. Not even half-baked does this qualify as fun. Its humor is almost non-existent, its performances are lifeless, and its graphics are amateurish (seriously, the special effects are done on someone's home computer so don't expect any big fun psychedelic interludes). Heck, it works more as an educational film about chronic than anything else. Even the worst stoner comedies embrace their over-the-top silliness, I just can't believe how dull this is!

The movie starts out great. A talking blunt named Slow Burn (voiced by Mystikal) introduces the film and is both amusing and creative. Forget about the "real" actors, I'd have preferred the entire story to revolve around Slow Burn! He pops up once or twice more and is the only character that I thought was interesting. Snoop Dogg plays a high school student who's in his fifteenth year as a senior (his actual age would probably put that at closer to 20 or 25). He's the resident bad boy and dealer, a rebel that everyone loves and all women want to be with. Wiz Khalifa, on the other hand, plays an uptight scholar looking to make a success of his life. Of course, being educated, working hard, or being ambitious are all attributes worthy of scorn as the screenplay continually tells us. Snoop takes Khalifa under his wing and the pair spend the rest of the movie smoking. That's about all the plot you get aside from a throw-away side story where Snoop must graduate to get with a hot substitute teacher. Serious drama! I mean what woman in her right mind wouldn't think he was a catch?

Again, I wasn't expecting "Mac and Devin Go To High School" to be some big epic. I just wanted it to be funny. The soundtrack, which came out seven months ago, has the hit "Young, Wild, and Free" which gets a big production number at the graduation ceremony. But trust me, the music doesn't save you from the utter boredom of the rest of the movie. Mike Epps is wasted in a small role and Andy Milonakis (who I generally like) is quite annoying. But as loud and over-the-top as Milonakis is, at least he's trying to breathe some life into the film! Stoned or stone cold sober, this was a big disappointment that felt completely homemade. Should have been stupid fun, but its not even smart enough to reach for that. KGHarris, 6/12.

One of the worst stoner flicks Ive ever seen. If you're looking for some Cheech and Chong, Half Baked, Jay and Silent Bob etc etc THIS AINT IT! The 2 stars is for Snoop, and the cameos. Least it was cheap through Amazon, even being that its a Blu Ray. Still a total waste of cash.

The film opens up with a talking joint informing you that the only way to watch this film is to be stoned. It is designed to be cheesy and campy with names like "N. Hale High School" and "Ralph Skinnfloot". It has an immaturity appeal to it. The plot is immaterial and the film would have been better as a "Groovetube" type film than trying to follow a plot about an old pot dealer in HIGH school.

The humor was re-hashed (pardon my drug pun) jokes and dialouge that would indeed sound better stoned. The movie suggests that you smoke pot continuously. Even seasoned pot smokers know better than that. The cartoon aspect of the film was good as was the talking joint with the bloodshot eyes. If they had incorporated the joint into the film, rather than someone talking as an aside, I think that would have been more entertaining to a stoned audience.

Parental Guide: Over abundance of F-bombs and N-words. Sex and Nudity. Sex talk.

Return of the Living Dead (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in DVD Packaging) (1985)

Return of the Living DeadBefore we start. I want to affirm that I love this film. Great script, great performances, great soundtrack, great directing.

Also, regardless of the negative feedback I give this DVD, we are unfortunately obligated to buy it, if we ever want to see a special edition DVD.

Ok, here goes. Yeah it looks great. But it just felt wrong. I couldn't place the reason. I thought maybe it was a visual matter. But I quickly realized that what was bugging me was the soundtrack. It was inexplicably, utterly mangled.

Will someone tell me why? Why were the vocals for whole songs removed? I am sorely disappointed and angered by this. I am outraged by the George Lucas style of re-working your film for DVD, and abandoning the original theatrical cut. If you feel the need to improve your film, fine, provide an alternate cut, or additional scenes, or whatever, that's great. Give me the option on the menu to see the "improved version, or the regular cut. But don't alter a classic, and not even mention it and try to pass it off as the original.

There are so many examples of this butchering, that I can't name them all. I only watched it once last night, and am at work now, but a few definitely come to mind.

#1 The scene where Trash and Suicide and the gang are speeding towards the cemetery used to have the Damned song Dead Beat Dance as the background music. Well, not anymore! You get the inital maniacal laugh, and then nothing, a completely different song. Why?!

#2 The scene where the zombie says: "send more cops", with a thick new york accent. A classic scene right? We all loved it right? Well did you notice that they changed the voice? Did you notice that is was awful in comparison, and not nearly as funny? Was there a good reason for this sacrilege? Has Dan O'Bannon lost his mind, or was this the studios fault? In the end credits, where the best-of scenes replay a second time, we hear the "send more cops" line in all its original glory. So I know I am not imagining this.

#3 What's his name, the Pathmark guy (no slight intended, his performance was excellent), takes his own life by placing himself in the crematorium. In the original version of this scene is accompanied by the song Burn the Flames, which sports a haunting guitar solo at the exact moment the door shuts and we hear the man's tortured screams. It is actually one of my favorite scenes in the film. The haunting music enhances the sadness of the moment.

But not anymore. Now the music is faded out in a particularly unartistic way, and the scene plays silent. Sorry but this is a disgrace. I waited years for this film to be re-released and I feel betrayed. The soundtrack was perfect the way it was. In a different film it would not be as a big of a deal. But when you are the ONLY zombie/comedy/horror film with a punky soundtrack, and a damned good one, and everyone loves you for it, you don't go around meddling and altering, deleting and rewriting, compiling and defiling.

It go to the point where I held my breath with every song change, worried sick that they would ommit lyrics or do away with the track altogether. Waves of relief washed over me when I reached the scene where the zombies are attacking the funeral home (and our heroes are furiously nailing doors and windows shut)and I discovered that the Cramps song "Surfin Dead" was left intact. Thank god, or the devil, for that one.

Could I be wrong? Did I miss some sort of soundtrack feature, where mistakenly clicked something off or on? Or is the sad fact that this movie has been permanently altered...?

After over a decade of being out of print (do to legal wrangling in regards to the film's punk rock soundtrack that is prominently featured throughout the film) the classic 1980s zombie film that turned heads with it's dark humor, witty script, and original zombie design is now available on DVD!

Freddy is a typical early 1980s punk rock fan who, on his first day at work at UNEEDA Medical Supply, learns that the movie "Night of the Living Dead" was based on an actual event involving zombies and that UNEEDA one day came into possession of one of the zombies which is now being held in a cylinder in the basement. A non-believing Freddy is shown the container just as it explodes, filling the supply company's building with a toxic green gas. The gas causes the sole human body in the body to come to life (as well as freeing the zombie from it's cylinder prison) and after failing to destroy the zombie the tradition way (cutting of it's head) they take it to the local crematorium to be cremated. Unfortunately this makes things MUCH, MUCH worse as the smoke laced with the toxic chemical mixes with storm clouds that rain down on the city at night and resurrecting the bodies buried inside the town's cemetary where ironically Freddy's fellow punk-friends are having a little party.

The kicker for Return of the Living Dead that makes it a classic film and makes it one of the most well loved zombie movies is the fact that the film's zombies aren't your typical movie zombie. They are smart (luring police to the crematorium after killing off several cops who come to investigate all of the strange activity going on), are fast and agressive instead of slow and dumb and the zombies have the most hilarious banter involving their thirst for brains that can have even the most squeemish movie viewer laughing.

Featuring a great punk rock sound-track and a great mix of humor and violence, this film has sadly been out of circulation for over a decade do to the it's punk soundtrack. Now it's back on the market on DVD. This is a must buy DVD for any true horror fan....

Re-animated corpses, swearing, blood & gore, full-frontal female nudity, iconoclastic jabs at American culture, and lots of gallows humor--what more could a horror fan ask for?

Any genre fan who has a morbid sense of humor is sure to enjoy 1985's THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. In the same vein as other tongue-in-cheek horror shtick such as the Chiodo Brothers' KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE and Sam Raimi's ARMY OF DARKNESS, this one's specifically a spoof of George Romero's classic and highly revered zombie film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Director/Screenwriter Dan O'Bannon, probably best known for having penned the original ALIEN movie, does a fantastic job of lovingly poking fun at the Horror and SF genres while at the same time satirizing everything from the U.S. Military to Punk Rock. This movie is not only funny, it's got plenty o' "brains"!

And you can't beat the financial value of the DVD edition. Not only does it cost less than a lot of other full-length, widescreen DVD thrillers--including some that are hardly worth the plastic and aluminum it took to make 'em--but it also includes these cool extras: an optional audio commentary by O'Bannon and production designer William Stout; both the G-rated and R-rated theatrical trailers; over 5-minutes of various TV spots; some storyboard-like production stills; and a really cool "Designing the Dead" featurette, in which O'Bannon and Stout discuss the evolution of the final look and feel of the movie (lots of great shots of Stout's EC-Comics-like designs for the zombies offered in this one).

"How was your day, dear?" "Usual, crap." I love that line. This is my absolute favorite movie of all time and I am extatic to hear that is finally coming out on DVD. The reason why I love it so much...couldn't tell ya. It's just one of those movies that keep you forever. I loved it. It's a unique zombie flick. With the portrayal of younger adolescents, I think it gives the movie a certain edge that no other zombie, or any other horror film for that matter, has ever had. Past, present and I will boldy say future. With combinations of laughs, scares, and gore, it surpasses every horror movie ever made. The character of Suicide and Trash are my two favorites. Unfortuanately for me, they are the first two to be devoured by brain starved zombies. But I always looked at it this way, Trash got what she wanted..."A bunch of old men to surround me. And start bighting, and eating me alive." I see. Trust me, if you are an avid horror fanatic like myself and love zombie films, check this one out! And if you are in to Punk music at all, the soundtrack for the movie rocks. With bands like The Cramps, The Damned, The Flesheaters, and TSOL, you'll be in pure heaven...Or hell. Whichever you prefer! I give this movie 2 THUMBS UP...and one half eaten brain!!!

This cut of the film sucks: The soundtrack has been reedited and remixed. Its not the same as the version we grew up with. The songs have been edited. Most notably the creepy song "Burn the Flames" played when

James Karen cremates himself has been almost totally removed. This stinks.

Rifftrax: LIVE! Reefer Madness

Rifftrax: LIVE! Reefer MadnessI saw this show in the theater last year and couldn't wait to get it on DVD. The shorts alone make it worth buying, but then the jokes during the movie were certainly worthwhile as well. The jokes are not simply a repeat of the studio version of Rifftrax Reefer Madness and while I enjoy that DVD quite a bit the live version is just as good or better with lots of new jokes added. As others have pointed out, there are a few flubbed lines, but they are few and far between and it is LIVE comedy, so that is to be expected. If anything, it adds to the humor. The energy of the live performance and connection with the theater audience more than makes up for a few verbal stumbles. I highly recommend this DVD, it is one of my favorites of the Rifftrax Live series so far.

Shorts include:

More Dangerous Than Dynamite: A 1930's short about the hazards of washing your laundry at home in gasoline. D'uh!

At Your Fingertips: Grasses: A bizarre arts and crafts short for children from the 1970's. You'll wonder what the makers of this one were thinking when they dreamed it up.

Frozen Frolics: An odd 1930 cartoon that is not so classic, but it is a bit bizarre. Let's just say it's no Steamboat Willy.

There's also a new introduction on the DVD featuring Mike, Kevin and Bill.

The shorts are so amusingly odd that they kind of make fun of themselves, but Rifftrax certainly does add jokes worth hearing. If you're a MSTie and or a Rifftrax fan you won't want to miss this one. Recommended.

As the post-MST3K world goes, Rifftrax has just been too hit-or-miss for me. I've picked up a few titles (Carnival of Souls is one of my favorite B movies so I HAD to have that one). But seeing they put their live shows out on Blu-ray perked my interest enough to order this. Good thing too, because this has ended up being my favorite of the Rifftrax outings. The best part of the show isn't the feature film...it's the short about grass (as in lawn), which is funny enough without the riffing.

I found the visual presentation to be a bit annoying. The image keeps alternating between the movie itself centered on the screen and the movie off to the left to fit images of the three riffers to the right in Brady windows. I found that to be distracting and unnecessary.

Still, the subject matter is ripe for riffing, and the laughs are frequent.

A 1930s movie about (sic) the "Dangers Of Marijuana?" Be a little real, marijuana is about as "dangerous" as Shirley Temple or Tiny Tim. The ONLY "true" way to achieve any sort of "edification" ref "Reefer Madness" is to allow the Riff Trax guys, Mike, Kevin, and Bill, to explain the..."subtile nuances" of this FINE film to you. And the song they've composed which is available between the Riff Trax-enhanced version of (giggle) "Reefer Madness" and the original (yes, they both occupy the same DVD!) film is worth the price of admission, just by itself. MST3K may have gone to that great resting place in the sky where "Fridays," "Alf," "the Monkees," and "Car 54 Where Are You" now abide, but the Riff Trax guys do very well, keeping its spirit alive and quite well.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is something new to me. But it is fun. It is a movie, a bad one with a couple of guys riffing it. If you do not know what that is, well you know how when you watch a bad movie with your friends and you make fun of it through out the movie... well there you go. That is what a riff is. They say funny things about the mistakes in the movie, and bad acting and whatever else they find that is funny.

I love the Rifftrax Live dvds because they have all of the extra shorts too! Reefer Madness is hilarious with the riffs.

K-On! Vol.2

K-On! Vol.2K-ON! vol 2 continues the first season of the series. Though more of a sitcom style series (there is no real overlying plot, aside from the general background oh high school life) with each episode bringing up new adventures and possibilities. But K-ON! is better known for the adorable characters (Mio Akayama has an insanely large otaku following), the fun music, and, most important, the mood that the series cultivates. This series has such a feel-good take on friendship that it makes for a really fun slice of life style anime.

I love the K-ON! series (including the K-ON!! follow up), though i understand the criticism that there isn't much plot development and the characters don't arc much. However, if you are looking for a series wherein you can enjoy a fun cast of characters and join them for their afternoon tea, then this will prove to be a rewarding series. You will like this if you enjoyed Azumanga Daioh. it has a similar feel.

a note on the product: 100 minutes seems not much (half of a short season). but if you already got volume 1, this will make for a necessary follow up.

While volume 1 set up the characters, volume 2 sets the story in motion. Containing episodes 5-8 we get to see the girls have there first concert, throw a Christmas party and try and recruit new members. Overall volume 2 really picks up the pace and for me things flow nicely. One of the things I love about K-On as a whole is that it's not a series you have to focus the whole time, you can just check your brain at the door sit back and enjoy a good light hearted comedy. The real star of the series is ,as corny as this sounds, the music itself.

Now getting to the basics of this volume, The voice acting from the English dub team at Bang-Zoom continues to improve and the actresses are getting better and more suited in there roles. However the Japanese version is still my preferred track. A lot of people have complained about the 2.0 stereo track, while yes I would love to have the dub in TrueHD 5.1 Lossless audio, It doesn't bother me that much and both tracks come though clear and with good quality. The bonus features are well done with a interview with Cristina Vee (English voice for Mio) as well as an English version of the one of the songs "Fuwa Fuwa Time" witch sounds really good in my opinion.

I think that this anime is one of the best, in my opinion. It's smart, funny, and original. If you want to see the lives of some not-so-ordinary teenage girls who build their own rock club, I suggest you watch this. The main character is a girl named Yui Hirasawa who joins the dying club, and discovers just how much she loves music and being with the friends who help her along the way. And in this volume, the high school adventures continue. Great for everyone of all ages!
