Couples Retreat (2009)

Couples RetreatThis movie was not only funny, it was sweet and a visual treat with a good moral. That in itself is reason enough to watch it, in this day of selfishness and disrespect for marriage. It was a fun ride. Some near nudity, a man's butt was exposed for a moment but that's all. Nudity is implied at that point but it's for a funny reason and shows nothing else. No sexual implications at that time either.

Four couples take a trip to help one of the couples get some help for what they believe is their failing marriage. The other couples are just along for the ride but the tables are turned on them when they are told there is no free ride at this retreat. You either work on your relationship or you go home. Thinking they can just skate into and out of each "session" and then get back to the fun because their relationships don't need any work, the other three couples say surprising things to "fill in the time" and make it appear that they're living up to their end of the bargain. Their thoughtless comments lead to some pretty funny counseling sessions and, as expected, they learn a thing or two, not only about their spouses but about themselves. In the end, it's all "Encouragement!"

This is a funny movie about four couples going on a retreat. One couple went to fix their marriage. The other three couples were tricked into going. They thought it was going to be a lot of free fun. But after their first day they found out they had to fallow the program to fixing their marriage in order to stay. Fixing a marriage that they didn't know needed fixing. There is a lot of fun and laughs in this movie. But I just think the ending could have been better. It kind of sucked.

Having read a handful of reviews prior to watching this, my bar was set pretty low but this failed to elicit even a chuckle. The movie rapidly sways between American Pie caliber phallic jokes (which fall flat) and painfully dry Lifetime-level relationship drama; I have no idea what kind of viewer they had in mind when they made this thing. Save your time and money, and watch any prime-time half hour comedy at random, which is sure to provide the same level of entertainment. The scenery was the single redeeming item here. Watching this during a sub-zero Northeast winter provided a bit of vicarious warmth.

Cry-Baby

Cry-BabyI'm really excited to see this great film finally make its debut on dvd; it's been a long wait.

John Waters has proven himself time and time again as America's avatar of bad taste and all things tacky, but he sidelined his more base urges for a greater good over a decade ago. Starting with Hairspray, Waters essentially re-created the American musical, and honed that to perfection with the castly underappreciated Cry-Baby. But it's not just a musical it's also a heartfelt valentine to a simpler time, his beloved Baltimore of the late 1950's.

Depp stars as "Cry-Baby" Walker, a juvenile delinquent from the wrong side of the tracks who spends his time hanging with his gang and singing that evil rock n' roll music. He and his way of life are constantly threatened by the town 'Squares' who are both threatened and repelled by Cry-Baby and those like him.

Naturally, he falls for a Square girl and all hell breaks loose. That part of it is a simple story, and I won't waste time rehashing or giving it away here. No, what really stands out about this film is its gleeful embrace of 'white-trash culture,' its loving tribute to the great juvenile delinquent movies of the 50's and 60's, and its rambunctious energy.

As usual, Waters peppers the film with eclectic casting; Susan Tyrell, Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake, Mink Stole, Joe Dalessandro, Willem Dafoe, David Nelson (son of Ozzie), Traci Lords and Patty Hearst (yes, that Patty Hearst) are just a few of the many talents that form this wonderful ensemble cast. And of course, it's another one of Depp's great iconoclastic roles that have helped define him as one of the great idiosyncratic actors of our time.

So grab yourself an RC Cola, a Moon Pie, and put yer teeth up on the windowsill while y'all enjoy this trashy good time. You'll thank me for it and if y'all don't like it, I'll eat me a bug.

There are two movies that people who don't know John Waters and the types of films he normally makes always love. Cry Baby and Hairspray contain both John Water's sense of humor and style, but don't necessarily dig into the depths of depravity (like eating dog poo) some of his more subversive films do. I'm not a John Waters aficionado yet, but what I've noticed in his films is that they normally center around two opposite sides that will eventually come crashing into one another. From Hairspray to A Dirty Shame, the films do a great job of putting two sides in direct opposition to each other and then letting the fur fly.

Cry Baby is no different. In this case, the Drapes and the Squares square off (pun not-intended) with Johnny Depp's Wade and Amy Locane's Allison at the center. Basically a love story that draws on the same dichotomous split seen in Romeo and Juliet, you have the poor and rowdy meet the rich and on the surface proper. What follows is a funny and zany ride as the two sides end up colliding in a winner-take-all car chase.

The writing is sharp as is the directing. What I admire about Waters the most is his ability to create vivid characters with personality. Sometimes he relies heavily on stereotypes, but each character is his or her own. You won't ever confuse them. They stay sharp, even when the acting isn't exactly stellar. The acting, like a majority of John Water's films, is spotty. Its done in an over-the-top sort of way that you can't help but laugh at. It reminds you that this isn't real and that you shouldn't take it seriously. Water's employs not only great upcoming talent (like Depp) but also people like Hatchet Face who haven't been seen much in film since. All do a great job playing their roles; however, not all of them are good actors.

Once you look past this minor speed bump, the ride is hillarious. It, along with Hairspray, is probably the most accessible of John Water's films. It maintains his sharp satirical writing and funny dialogue, but keeps the humor bawdy but not excessive.

cry baby what a great film! I am 16 and i have been watching Cry baby since i was 8 years old on a battered and worn out version on VHS. The film makes me feel really happy, the songs are unforgetable and the characters are just real funny especially Johnny Depp. I have mailed the director about releasing the film on DVD and i cant wait for it to happen. I am sure lots of people will buy. So "please Mr Jailer" give us Cry baby on DVD

I saw the movie Cry Baby with all of its scenes included on IFC years ago. They did a John Waters back to back marathon. I'm glad I had taped it because since then I have never seen the movie with those seens included. For instance, you don't see Johnny getting chased by the policeman on the way to the charm school. These parts are cut out to save time. If you ever get the chance to see it with ALL of the scenes, watch it! It's better, I think. And the part where Traci Lord's character tells exchange student Inga about American boys is great. It's better with the extra scenes. Once you see it, you'll see what I mean.

Want Cry-Baby Discount?

CryBaby is a clever satire with everything that a movie should have. Let's face it, every girl wants to be fought over by two hot guys (especially if one is Johnny Depp). The script is witty, the songs are amazing, and the acting is outstanding. I could watch this movie every day for the rest of my life without getting sick of it. I find myself singing the catchy songs around the house. CryBaby takes an ordinary storyline of the good girl falling for the bad boy, and spices it up with music, dancing, and interesting sub-plots. The contrast between the "squares" and the "drapes" (the good girls and boys and the rebels) is hysterical; everything in the movie is hysterical. CryBaby is destined to become a classic.

Zombie Strippers (+ BD Live) (2008)

Zombie Strippers"They're zombies. They're strippers. They're zombie strippers." Heavy on zombies, heavy on strippers. Do you need to know more? This is an offensive, willfully retarded, insulting, and moronic undead breast-fest that delivers precisely what it promises. The catch is, it's pretty goddamn funny in spite of itself and has some amusing political commentary to boot. If you come in knowing you are going to see Z-grade garbage on an epic scale, you'll have yourself a fun time. If you go in expecting a cerebral horror masterpiece then you're that A-hole that goes to see Kill Bill and then writes to the local newspaper to complain about the horrible and unexpected violence you were subjected to. DIE! True story, by the way.

The film opens with a glimpse at America's possible future under the W Corporation. The only merger more insidious than zombies and strippers: government and big business. But Chief Justice Jenna Bush (shown in her robes giving double metal horns with her tongue hanging out) thinks it's totally awesome. It's a laugh riot that brings to mind films like Idiocracy and definitely sets the tone for the story. And a stupid story it is. With the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, etc. killing Americans in droves, our Commander in Chief decides that re-animating dead soldiers for re-use is the way to go. Because that zombies as biological weapons thing always ends well. The virus ends up in a strip club where we see every nearly every single female character there strip for about 20 minutes straight. Porn legend Jenna Jameson is the first to be infected and rises from her grisly demise with superhuman stripping skills and a bit of a taste for human flesh. Seeing her bloody act driving the crowd wild, some of the other strippers (each an annoying stereotype, but also hot enough to overlook that fact) want in. Soon, the club is doing record business and the zombified patrons/mid-show snacks are building up in the cellar. I'm sure they won't ever wind up getting lose. Never. Yes, this movie is that audacious and dimwitted. Even after the strippers are all rotting and icky the crowd loves them. Even when they start ripping limbs off of patrons to beat each other with they don't notice something is amiss. If you would find this funny, then this is your movie. If not, walk on by.

But the stupid doesn't stop there. There's the janitor, Paco; a deliberately offensive Mexican stereotype with the worst fake mustache I've ever seen. Seeing him kiss the picture of his wife and daughters (all named Maria), or bid his burro (which suddenly appears out of nowhere) goodbye, or reference a famous line from The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (you know the one) not once but twice was pretty funny. I mean awful! Just plain awful! I did laugh, though. A lot. As dumb as this movie is, it never becomes unaware of it's inherent stupidity and remembers to make fun of itself. Robert Englund seems to be having the time of his life playing the over-the-top germphobic club owner, Jameson looks really cool with her black contacts in, seeing Tito Ortiz wuss out at the first sign of trouble was worth a snicker or two, and hearing the awful Eastern European woman -the kind who fits "how you say..." into every sentencefinally break down and say "looook into my eyes" in that dumb faux-Romanian accent was great. Also. gore and nudity. Lots and lots of gore and nudity. There's also gore WITH nudity. Mmmmm...gooory nudityyy.

Add a zombie stripper catfight incorporating the old ping-pong shooter trick as a weapon, some ridiculously out of place existential musings, and a crack military unit called Z-Squad (oh look, the Asian chick knows karate!) and you've got a retarded good time on your hands. There is almost 40 minutes of extended and deleted scenes, including the true conclusion to Paco's tale of immigrant stereotypes. A few behind-the-scenes featurettes and a commentary track round out the bonus features. "Zombie Strippers" is the precise definition of stupid fun, guilty pleasure, cheesy sleazy trash, so bad it's good, or whatever you call movies like this. You are either in or out; do not freakin' complain if you don't like it because if that is the case, you had no business being there in the first place. It's zombies. It's strippers. It's "Zombie Strippers" and in it's own way it is gore-geous.

Zombie Strippers....great title.

How can a title like that not sell?

Well, once the laughter dies down after reading that title, you realize there's a movie to go along with it,and that's the problem.

It's hard to screw up a film like "Zombie Strippers',but the filmmakers do a very good job of doing just that.

Many other viewers have noted the film's synoposis(Did you really NEED one?),so I'll just critique the film.

The film has an identity crisis, not quite sure if it's outrageous horror comedy or softcore porn, and never do the two meet together in an appropiate manner.

The major problems are:

The filmmakers try to make a political statement with this film, never realizing that politics have no place in a film called "Zombie Strippers".

Most of the humor is outdated,trendy,"Bush-bashing",the kind you see on college campuses, and it is pretty stale already.

The humorous idea of strippers who become better strippers as zombies is funny, but never comes off(Just why DO the guys in the film find rotting corpses sexy,is beyond me...it's NEVER explained).

The comic action suffers because it has NO believability.

I understand this is a comedy, but for most good comedy(and horror) to work, there has to be some root in reality.

The special forces team in the film is just corny and lame, and ultimately, characterless.

The guns they are using are OBVIOUSLY phony, and that's something of a distraction as well.

Most of the cast is painfully unfunny, even though veterans like Robert Englund, clearly try.

There is NO main character,or audience identification figure, either, which makes the experiance even more bizarre.

How about the T and A?

The girls are all generally attractive and well built, but nudity isn't as frequent as one would expect as this film follows the hollywood rules of "good girls don't take off there clothes",and that hurts that large portion of the audience.Only really a third(or less) of the chicks actually show anything...and mainly as corpses!

It also probally dosen't help either that it's just GROSS to see Jenna Jameson and company as NUDE,rotting corpses.

The blood and gore is mainly lame CGI,so gorehounds will probally be disapointed there as well.

On another hand, the zombie makeups are pretty good, and there clearly a few homages to the works of Tom Savini.

A few laughs are on hand, but to really appreciate this film would take a high level of inebriation...and I mean ALOT of booze, guys!

For the frat boys, this film may be a pleasant diversion.

For horror fans, you've seen funnier, bloodier and sexier.

For skin fans....eh.Okay.Nothing great.

Overall, nothing to highly reccomend, could have been alot better, really.

But what the hell did I expect with a film called "Zombie Strippers',anyway?

Oh lordy, lordy. What can I say. I expected T&A and the girls were definitely hot when they were alive, but how on earth can someone like dead, smelly, rotting stripper zombies. I know, I know, it's a parody. Robert Englund has come a long way. I like him but not so much in this movie. I thought he could have had a better part in it all. Anywho, what do you expect from a movie called "Zombie Strippers?"

Zombie strippers was actually based on true events. No really. Well, at least the zombie sex scenes were. They were based on my ex-wife, and our wedding night. In fact, she was supposed to be cast in the movie, but when she came in for the audition she scared the zombie extras so bad they had to use real zombies, and you know how expensive they can be. Because the UOD (Union Of the Dead) cuts no deals with the living, and has great benefits. I mean, have you ever seen a zombie with bad teeth?

I don't even know where to start; this movie is just bad. It made no sense from beginning to end. I think the director was going for the worse movie of the year award. Who thinks up such non-sense? If this is what I have to watch as a Prime member I'd rather be regular.

Dead in the Water (1991)

Dead in the WaterCall it a sleeper or rare find, but this movie is one of the funniest I've seen. Smart, sexy and filled with twists and dark humor. If you liked Pritzi's Honor, you'll love this one. One of the first feature films w/Terri Hatcher and Brian Brown is wonderful as a lawyer who tries to commit the "perfect crime." The crime isn't, but the movie is. It makes me laugh every time I see it and I can't recall how many times I have. An excellent murder mystery, too -you'll love it!

This was actually made for cable TV back in 1991, but is well enough directed by Bill Condon to make it feel like a feature release. Based on a 50's hard-boiled pulp novel by the great Harry Whittington, Web of Murder, the movie stars Bryan Brown as hot shot attorney Charlie Deegan who's married to a rich wife played by Anne DiSalvo and who has a sexy secretary Laura (Teri Hatcher).

So there's the standard noir plot elements--lust and greed and murder. Yep. But the way they're put together here is sharp and nifty, with lots of juicy dark humor along the way, so this is a really fun movie.

Nice score--dig Satchmo's singing in the opening credits--and the acting, especially by major fly-in-the-ointment Veronica Cartwright (who puts a serious damper on Charlie's plans) is very strong.

A really good addition to your neo-noir collection, Dead in the Water is a great way to spend an hour and a half soaking up them noir vibes. Oh, yeah.

Buy Dead in the Water (1991) Now

For inspired casting, try putting Australian Bryan Brown--native accent intact--in the role of corrupt American lawyer Charlie Deegan whose marriage is crumbling and whose secretary is too luscious to ignore. What this does is highlight the corruption on display by playing up Charlie's personality to the max. Very smart.

Charlie comes up with a plan to get rid of his oh-so-wealthy wife that looks completely foolproof, but we all know that in these noir flicks, things NEVER go as planned. Do they? Nope. The plan is to bump her off, inherit her money and run off with Laura the luscious secretary. Unfortunately fate has other things in mind.

The direction here, by Bill Condon, is whip smart-tight. The music is perfect, underscoring the black humor on display, including an opening tune sung by Louis Armstrong. There are enough laughs to keep things lively, and the supporting cast--espeically Veronica Cartwright as an obnoxious, pushy woman--is right on the money. Contributing to the nasty high jinks here as well are Pruitt Taylor Vince, one of the best unknown American actors around, Seymour Cassel, and Anne DeSalvo.

A real shame this is not on DVD. Add this to the almost unknown group of smart, non-DVD released American neo-noirs which include Mortal Passions, Genuine Risk, Delusion, The Outfit, and Charley Varrick.

Recommended.

Perhaps this is the best that can be done transferring an old video production to Blu-ray, but the picture and sound quality are no better than can be achieved in a transfer to DVD. The sound is harsh, the picture, while not noisy nor marred by digital artifacts, is soft and the colors are murky. And it's presented in its original, made-for-TV, 1.33:1 ("full-screen") aspect ratio. If you want a copy of this so-so movie, save some money, buy the DVD.

The Back-Up Plan (2010)

The Back-Up PlanAs a fan of romantic comedies, Jennifer Lopez, and Alex O'Loughlin, I loved this movie. Yes, it followed the typical plot structure and conventions of romantic comedies, but, so what? (Why aren't action movies, and other movies aimed at men, criticized for being even more formulaic than rom-coms? Only so-called "chick-flicks" are judged this harshly for following the structure of their genre.) I wasn't expecting a masterpiece that would sweep the awards shows. I was looking for some fun, heartwarming entertainment, and this movie delivers. Jennifer Lopez is wonderful at physical comedy, and we saw another side of Alex O'Loughlin. Having only seen him in intense, brooding roles, I was surprised at how well he delivered in a comedy. As a bonus, we also got to enjoy Tom Bosley in his final role, a bittersweet moment for his fans.

Even though critics weren't kind in their reviews of this film, I loved it particularly the acting, which was authentic and superb. Alex O'Loughlin is a terrific leading man, and after seeing this film I was motivated to watch his "Moonlight" Series on DVD and start watching him on Hawaii 5-0. The only downside for me were the scenes in the support group, particularly the birthing scene. When I watch the film on DVD I skip through all scenes containing the support group. It's over-the-top stupid and offensive in my opinion and makes the difficulty of child birth seem like a joke. But the dog playing "Nuts" and the sweet romantic scenes make this film worth watching.

Very good fun. While Jennifer Lopez is the "star" of the movie, don't sell Alex O'Loughlin short. He REALLY makes this movie great! His reactions to the situation(s) is what truly makes this a great comedy. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.

I have very mixed reactions to writing a review for this movie. I did enjoy it despite its flaws. Would I have watched/bought it without Alex O'Loughlin in it? Definitely not. It had some funny moments and some really awful ones (that birthing scene could have been funny, but it was a bit much over-reacting or over-acting)?? Alex made a great, gorgeous leading man he does THE best love scenes with those bedroom eyes OMG. He also showed his flair for comedy and was a great foil for J-Lo's neurotic character oozing charm and patience. His scenes with the Dad of three kids playing in the park were really hilarious. J-Lo's leading men in these romantic comedies (like Ralph Fiennes in Maid in Manhattan) are always beautiful, charming and delightful actors all of whom make her look good. This is a wonderful, feel-good movie to watch repeatedly every now and then mostly to have the absolute indulgence of watching Alex on the big screen. I hope he gets more big-screen movie work in the very near future.

Zoe a single New Yorker decided that at her age with no husband in sight she would have a baby. What she didn't count on was meeting the handsome and sexy, Stan.....Mr. Right. On top of their whirl win romance they found out Zoe was expecting twins.

Like every romance ups and down and so many sweet moments.

In one scene, Zoe and Stan are at a friends home while she was giving birth in a pool and I almost split from laughing so hard.

Zoe coming to terms with the past and wanting Stan in her life was fun, yet emotional at times. A great cast of characters in this film and a dog with "no legs" on a cart, you'll fall in love with!

Madea's Family Reunion (2006)

Madea's Family ReunionOnce again, Tyler has put together a grand movie; I went to the first showing of it here in town and the theater was PACKED; not many seats left; yet, it was a great movie; Cicely and Maya giving us lessons; Maya with the wedding poem; The wedding itself;(nothing short of beautiful); the daughters, the men, Joe, Madea; great combination; Like I mentioned on Tyler's site when I commented on the movie; some movies make you think, some leave you with a short feeling, some just leave a lasting impression and make you empowered; this movie did that and more! I higly encourage those to see this movie and be empowered to do wonderful things;

Tyler Perry really did it for me in this movie he shows African American culture at it's finest. He also has some of the best actresses playing in this movie. Add all this with an entertaining funny twist and you will have money well spent. I love the soundtrack as well as the art that is showcased in this movie. My favorite part of the movie is at the family reunion where Cicely Tyson does her thing and SPEAKS to "her family". Well done Tyler keep them coming.WARNING:DO NOT GO TO THIS MOVIE WITHOUT A BOX OF TISSUES BECAUSE YOU WILL BE LAUGHING SO HARD.

Storyline, cinematography, acting, positive themes, family friendliness

Cons:

Tacky wedding set, sometimes preachy, some content disturbing for kids and victims of abuse

Full Review:

Caution--This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

I first saw this film in the theater in March. I was in the market for a quality show to celebrate Women's History Month and the tail end of "365 Days of African American History." But it was Friday night and I was also in the mood to laugh. So I convinced my date to see "Madea's Family Reunion" rather than the action flick he was lobbying for. We'd both seen the stage version of "Madea's Family Reunion" and all of Tyler Perry's other shows on DVD and knew the film would be fun. But we didn't anticipate the degree to which Mr. Perry and his pistol packin' alter ego, grandma Mabel "Madea" Simmons (one of three characters he plays in the film), would load so many dead-serious and inspirational messages into this scenic gem.

The ethnically diverse audience at the cinema where we saw the film seemed to concur. We all gasped and guffawed, oohed and aahed at the appropriate moments (except one, which I'll address later), and stayed to watch the outtakes and extra treats rolled alongside the credits. Mr. Perry knows his audience...he kept us enraptured, in the palm of his hand, until Madea broke the spell and directed, "You can go home now."

The film's script, music (which writer, producer, actor, director Perry had a hand in), cinematography, casting and wardrobe pleased the senses, with one major exception that profoundly disappointed me. Not everyone seemed to agree; I was surprised (and red faced) to be the only one in the theater to react audibly to the rendering of the "Springtime in Paris" wedding theme pulled together by wedding planner Milay Jenay Lori (played by Jenifer Davis). When I saw it, I couldn't help but blurt out, "That's awful!" Everyone else in the theater was silent. They were probably either wishing I'd pipe down or wondering, as I was, why--given the movie's ample budget, the beauty of some scenes and realistic homeliness of others--the bridal set had to be so goldarn tacky. But that's a minor matter, like a ding in the fender of a top-of-the-line sports car, or the fact that fine-as-wine and manly-but-artistic Frankie (played by Boris Kodjoe) was not as wealthy as the equally fine, "love you to death," Carlos (played by Blair Underwood).

"Madea's Family Reunion" is not just a gem. This blockbuster's also a cash cow. According to Wikipedia, "On opening weekend, February 24, 2006 Mr. Perry's movie version of Madea's Family Reunion opened at number one with $30 million, more than triple the amount it cost to make." Furthermore, as IMDb reports, "After the first week record-breaking release of the first "Madea" film by Perry, Tyler, Lions Gate Home Entertainment acquired a seven-picture deal of the remaining Madea films." In addition to his commercial and critical success, Mr. Perry's website reports that he is currently celebrating being the first playwright of this genre to be sponsored by a major pharmaceutical company, Glaxo Wellcome.

I'm thrilled at Mr. Perry's success. Like single-mother Whoopi and motherless-at-an-early-age Madonna, the N'Awlins native and adult survivor of child abuse has joined the ranks of wildly popular self-made millionaires who have overcome substantial personal tribulations, taken odd jobs to finance their dreams, and even spent time homeless. Mr. Perry began writing stage plays at age 18, and so far has conquered stage and screen. Next on the horizon: his first novel, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Her Earrings Off: Madea's Commentaries on Love and Life. I can't wait to get between those sheets!

Bulletproof (1996)

BulletproofI really liked this movie for a couple different reasons. First of all both Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler are two of my favorite comedy actors. Both these guys seem to draw off each other very well and make a great team. I also liked the story and the little twists and turns it takes close to the end. There are also a few scenes that are the funniest stuff I've ever seen Sandler do. If you're in to crime, action, and most of all comedy movies then I definately say buy this movie

In Hollywood, several comedy stars who make action flicks usually get laughed atand they usually get laughed at pretty bad. Sure, it would be interesting to see someone like Jim Carrey or Robin Williams do an action movie, but that will probably never happen, and once comedy star Bruce Willis proved that he could pull off an action movie("Die Hard")while Eddie Murphy has a talent for both action and comedy as well. So, if you take a look at Adam Sandler and his movies, and if you thought that you would never see Adam Sandler do an action movie, then you are wrong-because Sandler's 1996 film with Daman Wayans, "Bulletproof" does have some comedy in it, but there is a lot of action in it as well.

The movie starts off with Sandler portaying Archie Moses, a small time car thief and a drug dealer in Los Angeles. His best friend is Rock Keats (Wayans)who is also a car thief. Moses and Keats have been friends for a year. Meanwhile, Moses is working on a drug operation with a drug lord named Frank Colton (James Caan)and talks to Colton (his boss)about bringing Keats in on their operation. Colton is worried that Keats is a cop, but Moses assures Colton that Keats is not a cop, and then Keats is in on the operation. The only problem is that Keats is a cop, his real name is Jack Carter, and he is working undercover with the LAPD to bust Moses and Colton at a sting operation the LAPD has set up.

Then, the day finally comes. When Moses finds out that Keats is a cop, he feels angry. He feels betrayed. And then he shoots Keats (accidently). Moses and Colton then become fugitives, Keats ends up in a Los Angeles hospital, and six months later, he gets out. This is when Moses is arrested in Arizona, and because Colton wants Moses dead for a bringing a cop into his organization (as well as Keats)Moses is ready to turn Colton in so Colton will be arrested and Moses won't have to worry for his life. But Moses will only bring Colton in on one condition: Keats must bring him in. So Keats flys out to Arizona so he can bring Moses back to California to testify against Colton. However, Colton is aware of everything that has happened, and as a result, Moses and Colton spend their time trying to get back to California while they are at each other's throats, and several funny events are happening.

"Bulletproof" is an enjoyable, underrated action/comedy flick. It was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who has directed thrillers such as "Juice" and "Surviving The Game" and has even worked with Spike Lee as a cinematagrapher on some of his films. Dickerson is a good director, and "Bulletproof" gives him the chance to show his directing talent. Adam Sandler, Daman Wayans, and James Caan do a good job with their acting in this movie, while they keep the chemistry flowing between their characters. "Bulletproof" is action, comedy, and chemistry all together at their best, and if you are a fan of Adam Sandler, Daman Wayans, James Caan, or movies with both action and comedy, then you should check out this movie.

Adam Sandler does it again, with another fun movie! This one is action-packed, and a great buddy movie. Damon Wayans is excellent in this film as well, and the two together make for a fun memorable show.

The ending will leave you with a few loose ends, but you won't miss much... with an ending as funny as the rest of this film.

This gem seems to have slipped through the cracks. My kids are big fans of Adam Sandler and when I saw this title with Damon Wayans, we just had to check this out. It was even better than what we expected! The movie has a great storyline and just had us in stitches. If you like movies, such as Bad Boys or Shanghai Noon, you will love this movie!

30 Minutes or Less (2011)

30 Minutes or Less30 Minutes or Less is a slacker comedy from Ruben Fleischer, the director of Zombieland, that runs only 53 minutes more than its title suggests. The story of a pizza delivery boy who is forced to rob a bank by two thugs who strap a bomb to him, much has been made about how the film bears a remarkable similarity to a real-life, more tragic story from a few years ago. The creators have vehemently denied this story served as inspiration and while the true story may have provided the kernel of an idea for the screenwriters, the rest is taken in a substantially different, some may argue disrespectful, direction.

Jesse Eisenberg, fresh off his Oscar-nomination for The Social Network, plays Nick, a 20-something pizza boy who spends his days smoking pot and failing to deliver pizzas in the "30 minutes or less" timeframe the pizza chain promises. He has only one friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari), a substitute teacher, but the two have a falling out over various admissions, including Nick's relationship with Chet's sister Katie (Dilshad Vadsaria). Meanwhile, two losers named Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) live under the shadow of Dwayne's domineering, ex-military father The Major (Fred Ward), while making $10 an hour cleaning his pool. At a strip-club, Dwayne tells a stripper about his father winning the lottery and how he could stand to inherit a couple million dollars if The Major were to die. Promising Dwayne a permanent position in his lap, the stripper tells Dwayne that if he can come up with $100,000, she knows someone who can make his father disappear indefinitely. With their get-rich-quick scheme in place, Dwayne and Travis ambush Nick, strap a bomb to his chest, and give him 10 hours to rob a bank.

The plot makes no apologies for how ridiculous it is, but is actually clever in the way it gives a rather stupid plan to really stupid characters. After all, Dwayne and Travis' plan to have Nick rob a bank and give them the money so they can get some money is rather redundant. This does however work well, as the Dwayne and Travis characters are completely witless. History has suggested that a film with such a short running time shows a lack of ideas on the part of the screenwriter. In this case, it works for the film rather than against it. 30 Minutes or Less is brief, but not a single scene seems unnecessary and the pacing is top-notch. This is a comedy that moves very quickly and is both very exciting and very funny without feeling too rushed. The actual robbery scene, one of the highlights, is laugh-out-loud funny and genuinely exciting as well. The bomb strapped to Nick provides the story with a sense of urgency too. The script will be dismissed as derivative due to the buddy-comedy, action-comedy elements that have been heavily used in other films but it's successful in the way it finds its footing very quickly and never becomes too dark, too serious, or too light-hearted. It's fast-moving and very consistent in the way it unfolds and how it keeps the humor fresh in a mostly un-funny situation. It actually ends well too, with an abrupt ending that is a Hollywood ending at heart but isn't a complete Hollywood cop-out. It does end abruptly and readings have revealed a much darker, effective ending in the original script, but it still succeeds by wisely avoiding the cheesy Hollywood need to wrap everything up nicely so audiences can leave feeling warm and fuzzy.

Fleischer is an excellent director that can balance the different genre elements with finesse and style. Whether he's directing dialogue scenes or the obligatory (in this type of film) car chase sequence, it all works and comes together nicely. There are also some subtle elements in the way he establishes the characters through look and attire. What is Fleischer suggesting by having Dwayne and Travis, the film's dumbest characters, wear Metallica and Insane Clown Posse shirts? If he is suggesting something, I applaud him. The film moves with a constant energy, helped along by a cast that has energy in spades. Eisenberg handles comedy quite well and he makes his performance in The Social Network seem even more impressive by comparison. His character Nick mentioning Facebook is an amusing little aside by itself. Ansari is a bundle of comedic energy, yet keeps his amped-up acting from going completely over-the-top. McBride, whom I consider to be one of the funniest comedians around, doesn't venture far from the dim-witted, egotistical jerk character he's made his name playing, but McBride possesses a comedic delivery that is unmatched by his contemporaries and he's as effective and hilarious as ever. Everyone has met a guy like the characters McBride plays and he plays these types with a satirical gusto that is much more layered than its low-brow humor suggests. Michael Peña is becoming the go-to-guy for comedic roles with over-the-top accents, but as a talented dramatic actor he makes each one different and, while over-the-top, it's never campy. His performance as the potential hitman Chongo is a highlight here. Even Nick Swardson, whom I never find particularly funny, is actually well-utilized here. There's a friendly, energetic chemistry between Eisenberg, Ansari, McBride, and Swardson that really drives the film. It's apparent that the actors involved had a good time making it, which translates well onscreen and makes the movie even more of a joy to watch. When actors can be seen clearly having fun with their work, this generally has a positive effect on the audience viewing the film. From the actor's demeanor and rapport, I'd guess this was about as fun to make as it was to watch.

30 Minutes or Less is simple summer, Hollywood fun with a cast of talented comedic actors working within the confines of stronger-than-expected material. It hasn't been received too well, but comedy is the most subjective genre of film and film critics don't exactly fall into this film's demographic. It's fun and energetic, with non-stop humor that will be enjoyed by the average moviegoer and anyone who has liked the previous work of the principal cast. How one can pan a film so highly enjoyable is beyond me.

GRADE: B+

Ignore the lukewarm reviews below and rent this if you like hilarious thrillers starring gifted improv actors! The direction and editing are also top notch. I watched this with virtually no expectations and was thoroughly entertained for two hours! Reminiscent of "Ruthless People" for those of you with long memories...

THIS DOES CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS

Ruben Fleischer's first directorial effort, Zombieland, was met with both critic acclaim and fan appraisal. There seem to be far fewer people who disliked Zombieland compared to those who enjoyed it. Zombieland was quite entertaining though; its cast was incredibly well-rounded, it offered a new spin on a story we've seen dozens of times before, and most of all it offered humor and sharp wit during what is otherwise the end of the world; a time when you least expected it. Zombieland was something special. However, 30 Minutes or Less seems like a completely different type of comedy. The trailers lead you to believe it could go either way; one way being extremely hilarious and the other ending with you kicking yourself because you didn't just wait to rent it. Even after seeing the movie, 30 Minutes or Less still manages to fall somewhere in the middle of that generalization.

30 Minutes or Less starts off pretty strong. The dialogue is really funny, you can feel the chemistry between the actors, and the storyline is progressing at a steady pace. It seems like it's on track to be this fantastically amusing R-rated comedy that's one of the funniest films of the year, but it begins to lose steam after the bank robbery. It's like the humor begins to lose its wit and becomes more about bickering between the duos Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) and Chet (Aziz Ansari) and Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson). By the end of the movie, you'll wonder how a pizza deliveryman who does nothing but smoke pot, drink, play video games, and watch action movies who's never amounted to anything his entire life can rob a bank, get away with it, and be as smart as he is about the entire situation. Is it years of untapped potential finally bubbling to the surface or a giant plot hole? You'll have to be the judge of that.

There seems to be a plethora of plot devices added in the second half of the movie that hurts it overall. A pen gun, a hired gun getting his own side story, a romance, the potential tan salon Dwayne and Travis won't stop talking about, police chases, the leverage changing hands several times, and flamethrowers all entering the picture, it all becomes too much to process. Trying to juggle that many scenes only results in a movie like this stumbling in its attempted execution.

The cast is 30 Minutes or Less finest asset. The writing certainly has its moments, but the actors are what make the movie as entertaining as it is. Jesse Eisenberg portrays that same sharp wit you've come to expect from the actor. Meanwhile Danny McBride gives one of his best performances. McBride tends to be utilized so well as a supporting character. All of his qualities seem to shine brightest when he's not the main character. It's one of the reasons Your Highness didn't work out. Nick Swardson plays up the bomb expert/second fiddle to Dwayne role incredibly well. He's more intelligent than he lets on and the scene where he's unleashing his kicks in front of a tied up and bomb straddled Nick is probably his funniest in the movie. Last but not least, there's Michael Peña who's the one character in the movie who can get laughs just by the way he talks alone. His "pimp" scene in the mirror is quite amusing. You may have noticed I left out Aziz Ansari and that's mostly because it felt like he wasn't very funny at all. He had a few one-liners that are snicker-worthy, but seemed to ruin it by running it into the ground and just overdoing it in general.

The other disheartening thing about 30 Minutes or Less is the way it ends. It doesn't feel like a conclusion since everything just kind of stops. The movie ends with a laugh and has a pretty ridiculous scene after the credits, but it leaves so many unanswered questions. It was probably left open for a possible sequel, which would probably just completely ruin what limited appeal this comedy has.

30 Minutes or Less is fast paced, action packed, and even downright hilarious at times. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep up the momentum it first starts off with. The humor becomes stale, the actors tend to get caught up in being silly rather than moving the story along, and action takes a front seat in the second half while the comedy takes a hit, but 30 Minutes or Less is still fairly amusing and at least worth a rental in the long run.

This movie pretty much flew completely under the radar somehow, even though it stars Danny McBride, Aziz, and that guy from "The Social Network". I saw it at Redbox, picked it up, and was delightfully surprised. This flick is laugh-out-loud funny, with great support from Nick Swardson. It is "slacker" comedy at its finest, with Swardson, McBride, and Aziz each sharing absolutely hilarious dialogue and delivery (the line in my title belongs to Aziz). Be warned, however, this movie is extremely profane, and not suitable for children or the squeamish!

[THE REVIEW INCLUDES MILD SPOILERS]

Two delinquents Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) want Dwayne's rich and domineering father (Fred Ward) dead. So, what should they do? Hire a hitman, of course. But they need money to hire one. OK, make a bomb, strap it to a pizza delivery driver Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) and makes him rob a bank.

The story of "30: Minutes or Less" starts off pretty well, but for all the talented cast involved (with Aziz Ansari as Chet, Nick's best friend), the film soon loses momentum, not knowing what it really wants to do. Even at 83 minutes (with a post-credit scene) the action/thriller/comedy feels very long.

"30: Minutes or Less" stars Jesse Eisenberg and is directed by Ruben Fleischer. They are also the star and the director of a more effective comedy "Zombieland." Eisenberg, whose character in "Zombieland" was much more interesting, does his best here, but in the end most scenes are stolen by Danny McBride and Nick Swardson in "30: Minutes or Less."

That leaves the viewer with no one to root for. No matter how desperate Nick and Chet may become, we simply do not really care. "30: Minutes or Less" is sporadically funny thanks to the cast, but in spite of some good ingredients, the film suffers from the half-baked writing.

Whip It (2009)

Whip It"Whip It" is surprisingly good in spite of itself, conventional as a sports movie yet mature in its development of character. It's also an entertaining spectacle, which is relief for me since I've never given much thought to women's Roller Derby (or even sports in general, but that's a topic for another day). Drew Barrymore has done well to hype it as her directorial debut; she proves that she not only has the technical skills, but also the ability to move a story along through dialogue, pacing, and emotion. Having practically grown up in front of the camera, I think it's safe to assume she knows a thing or two about what a film needs in order for it to work. The first thing she did right was cast Ellen Page, who has repeatedly demonstrated just how versatile an actress she is.

She's no exception here. She plays seventeen-year-old Bliss Cavendar, who was raised in a middle-of-nowhere Texas town and gets by as a diner waitress. Her overbearing mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden), a product of a very different set of standards, pressures Bliss into competing in beauty pageants, believing you have to make do with what you've got when you're young and attractive. When Bliss is made aware of a Roller Derby match in nearby Austin, she decides to go and see what all the fuss is about. Lo and behold, she likes what she sees. She then meets Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), a teammate for the Hurl Scouts, and is encouraged to try out for the team. Maggie is one of several teammates that has adopted a clever nickname; some of the other Hurl Scouts are Smashley Simpson (Drew Barrymore), Rosa Sparks (Eve), and the Manson Sisters (Kristen Adolfi and Rachel Piplica).

Under the guise of taking an SAT studies class, Bliss sneaks away to Austin every week for practice. Conflict abounds: Not only have the Hurl Scouts never won a single game, Bliss' teammates are also unaware that she's underage (you have to be twenty-one in order to be considered for Roller Derby). By the time she starts participating in matches, she develops a rivalry with Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), the confrontational leader of undefeated champions of Roller Derby, the Holy Rollers. Nevertheless, Bliss has never felt more alive. At long last, she has found something she loves to do, and she does it with people she enjoys being around. Eventually, she will have to find and maintain that delicate balance between her passion, her family, and her life back home, a process that isn't as easy as it might seem.

One could see this film just for the satisfaction of watching an uplifting, inspirational sports film, as has been done so many times before. For me, what made this movie so enjoyable were the characters, most so interesting and well developed that they seemed authentic. Bliss, for example, is willful and determined, yet not so haughty that she only seems like a spoiled brat. There's a remarkably tender side to her, and yes, some of it is reserved for her mother. It would have been easy to write Brooke as a controlling, spiteful stereotype, but all of that is avoided--despite having unrealistic expectations and a dated ideal of successful womanhood, she genuinely cares about her daughter, and we sense that all throughout. The only character who poses a bit of a problem is Bliss' father, Earl (Daniel Stern), seemingly included just for the sake of physically and morally clashing with his wife.

Other characters function as quirky interludes, like Bliss' supportive best friend, Pash (Alia Shawkat), the Hurl Scouts' eccentric coach, Razor (Andrew Wilson), and the boisterous Roller Derby announcer, "Hot Tub" Johnny Rocket (Jimmy Fallon). The screenplay even has room for a teen romance between Bliss and a guitarist named Oliver (Landon Pigg), who eventually swaps his coat for Bliss' Stryper tee shirt (which she claims is the only cool thing her mother ever gave her). Most of these characters, the last one especially, are expected, as is the inevitable final match between the Hurl Scouts and the Holy Rollers. And yet, it all comes together smoothly, making for a fun and endearing film that you'll want to see through to the end.

The game sequences are quite effective on their own, not only because of the well choreographed skating maneuvers, but also because of the camerawork; every shot exploits the spectacle that is Roller Derby, gliding in time with the actors as they zoom over and around each other on an inclined track. Other shots reveal the grungy feel of a Roller Derby event, from the makeshift arena to the ramshackle benches to the screaming fans, most of whom look no older than twenty. This is interesting in and of itself, given the fact that, save for Bliss, all the teammates are in their early to late thirties; one of them even has a young son. Knowing these women are mostly in it for the love of the game, one wonders how long Bliss can keep playing right alongside them. But if there is a message attached to "Whip It," it has nothing to do with what the future may or may not bring; this movie is all about living in the now and loving every minute of it.

Roller Derby. I can easily remember turning on the television and watching the Los Angeles T-Birds. Personally, I didn't know if this was a true sport or if it was like wrestling and it was just sports entertainment. But I was hooked. Not sure if it was the blonde women with poofy hair throwing other women out of the rink or that one person who didn't look should be on the rink, actually kicking butt. Needless to say, that roller derby has had its following for decades and now here we are with a film based on a character who takes part in roller derby competitions.

"Whip It" marks the directorial debut by actress Drew Barrymore ("E.T.", "50 First Dates", "The Wedding Singer", "Charlie's Angels" films) and is an adaptation of the novel "Derby Girl" by Shauna Cross, a fictionalized book of skating with the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls.

The independent film was released in theaters during the fall of 2009 and now makes its Blu-ray and DVD debut. The Blu-ray edition comes with a second disc which contains a digital copy of the film.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"Whip It" is presented in 1080 High Definition (Widescreen 2:40:1), AVC @ 36 MBPS. The film sports vibrant colors with the Hurl Scouts green outfits, while amber lights shine on the roller derby rink. You can see details in the surroundings, especially injuries ala bloody noses to bruises. Even the tattoos on Kristen Wiig are seen much clearly on HD. Skin tones are natural and blacks are nice and deep. Everything is visible from the freckles of Pash, to the sweat and tears of Bliss and the other girls during competition or the more emotional scenes of the film. I will say that at first, I thought this was a period film shot in the '80s but you realize that the film focuses on Bliss living in a very small town.

There is a fine amount of grain in the film and I didn't notice any compression artifacts, banding or any sign of DNR. A solid Blu-ray release in terms of PQ from Fox.

As for the audio, "Whip It" is featured in English 5.1 DTS-HD MA and Spanish, French 5.1 Dolby Digital. The film is front and center channel driven. Dialogue and music are both crystal clear but there is minimal use of surrounds. You can hear crowd ambiance and the women racing on the rink and hitting the side rails and hearing the skates but its not immersive as I would have hoped but still, the film is not all about the roller derby and there are plenty of dialogue scenes and music-driven scenes that are very clear, with some songs having a nice kick of bass. A pretty interesting soundtrack as well from '80s 38 Special's "Caught Up in You" to music from the Ramones and the Breeders.

Subtitles are in English SDH and Spanish.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"Whip It" comes with a digital copy of the film and comes with a few special features:

* Deleted Scenes (16:14) Included is an alternate opening and eight deleted scenes.

* Fox Movie Channel Presents Writer's Draft: Shauna Cross of "Whip It" (3:04) A short featurette with an interview with novel and screenwriter Shauna Cross about "Whip It".

* Whip It Soundtrack Spot (:32) A promotional for the "Whip It" soundtrack.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"Whip It" may seem like a film about roller derby and the antics that go behind-the-scenes of the sport but truthfully, the film has many layers. From a coming-of-age film, a relationship movie and a girl power film, there are a good number of things going on in this film that there is far much more to enjoy than expected.

I have to admit that Drew Barrymore's directorial debut definitely shows promise. The actress has starred in so many films since she was a child and has worked with a good number of quality director's, I had no doubt that she would do a pretty solid job.

Part of the challenge of "Whip It" is bringing together this wild bunch of characters that the character Bliss associates with and then bringing this other side of her life as a teenager from a small town, having an overbearing pageant mother and working at a fast food restaurant while trying to maintain her friendship with her high school friends and then finding love. Definitely not an easy task for Barrymore but one thing she does have is the original author Shauna Cross involved with the screenplay and she has a talented actress in Ellen Page in the main role.

At first glance, I didn't know if Page can pull of such a role but as she did with "Juno" she manages to pull of Bliss very well for "Whip It".

As for the other supporting characters, personally I don't if roller derby lifestyles are similar to what is depicted in the movie. As much as I do enjoy Barrymore's directorial debut, her role as Smashley Simpson is a bit too much while I do feel Kristen Wiig manages to pull off another solid supporting role like she has done in "Extract" and Juliette Lewis still does a great job in portraying the bad girl. Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern (who plays Bliss's father) also do a good job as the parents of Bliss.

As for the Blu-ray, the picture quality for the film was very good and the lossless audio was satisfactory but it would have been great to have it a bit more immersive via use of the surround channels. And it would have been great to have audio commentary by Barrymore and Shauna Cross or even a featurette on how the talent prepared for the film or even Behind-the-scenes footage. I felt the special features were a bit short for this Blu-ray release. But as for the film, "Whip It" is an entertaining, humorous and a solid coming-of-age, feel-good style of film. And again, although roller derby does play a big part in this film, "Whip It" is not an all out sports movie. The film has many layers to it and fortunately, the solid performances definitely made this film enjoyable.

Overall, "Whip It" is a solid directorial debut from Drew Barrymore and fine performances by Ellen Page and its supporting cast makes this film better than expected.

It's official: Until further notice, I will happily see any movie featuring Ellen Page. As in previous movies, Page does an outstanding job in bringing her angsty teenage character to life. This time, she's a slightly lost seventeen year old being herded around by a pageant-passionate mother. The first glimmering that she might have goals of her own comes when she sees roller derby girls dropping off flyers for an upcoming event. Of course, she sneaks out to see it using a pretext transparent to everyone but her parents, and she is transfixed. After the show, she tells one of the skaters, "You guys are my heroes!" The tattooed derby girl answers, "Come to the tryout be your own hero." And she does.

The rest follows an inspiring and hilarious season of sneaking around the parents, doing her part to bring the last-place team to the championship. As you might expect, the poo hits the fan when pageant-panicked Mom finds out that her little beauty queen has another life as Babe Ruthless. I found the parent/teen flareups somewhat milder than realistic, but then the rapprochement was unconvincingly minor, too.

But, if that tension had been much tenser, a lot of the movie's core fun would have been hidden. Barrymore, in her debut role as director, clearly had fun making this and the fun comes through in the final product. The girl-power, be-who-you-are messages come through without shrillness, and Page's navigation of teen heartbreak leaves her character convincingly in the lead. One scene near the very end, her father with hammer in hand (wait for it) was a bit predictable, but satisfying none the less. As was the whole movie. I don't always want a movie that takes itself too seriously. When you want a fun bit of fluff with plenty of physical comedy, give this one a shot. It's well worth the time spent seeing it.

Not all movies are made to be Oscar contenders. Many are made to simply fill theater seats and offer solid entertainment and an enjoyable time. More often than not, these films offer a chance to see heroes made or characters that get the opportunity to follow their dreams. Such is the case with WHIP IT, the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore.

Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page) is an unenthusiastic beauty queen contestant. Fulfilling the dreams of her mother Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden) more than herself, Bliss does as she is told between school and working at the local BBQ restaurant. Bliss feels nothing more than trapped in small town Bowdeen, Texas.

While clothes shopping with her mother in Austin, Bliss happens to see a group of girls on skates come into the store they're in. Leaving behind a stack of flyers, Bliss picks one up to see that these are roller derby competitors trying to promote their next match.

Sneaking off with best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat), Bliss is totally taken in by the whole scene. The match takes place in a converted warehouse where emcee Johnny Rocket (Jimmy Fallon) announces the girls as they make their way to the track. With names like Iron Maven, Smashly Simpson and Maggie Mayhem you can tell this is no skate in the park. The girls come out rocking and knocking, making an impression on young Bliss. When she tells Maggie afterwards that she is her new hero, Maggie suggests she come to practice and try out.

Once home, Bliss begins skating once more in her Barbie skates, remnants of times gone by. She progresses from just being able to stand to skating through town. The day comes and she sneaks off again for Austin just in time to try out. With more speed than most of the rest trying out, Bliss gets her chance. Now all she has to do is sneak off to the matches.

The girls welcome Bliss in as one of the Hurl Scouts, a losing team that has resolved to stay in last place. But with the speed Bliss shows them and the ribbing they take from the other squads, the team slowly gels into a force to be reckoned with. It also makes Bliss a target for Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), an aging star who wants to retain her position.

Along the way Bliss also picks up a new boyfriend. Oliver (Landon Pigg) is a member of a band that played at one of the house parties thrown by the team. The pair seems to connect but an upcoming tour tosses them into the possibility of a break up.

As Bliss, now known as Babe Ruthless, moves into the world of roller derby, she begins to distance herself from her friends. And when her parents find out about her lies (as does her team when it's revealed she's too young to skate without her parent's permission), Bliss finds herself alone.

The team now has a chance at the finals. The only thing stopping this from happening is Bliss' family. Resigned to beauty pageants once more, Bliss heads out to a new contest, her mother's favorite, the same night as the big contest. Is there a chance of her making it? Come on, this is a movie folks!

Is this movie believable? No way. First off no league would put themselves in the position of being shut down due to a teenager not being old enough. And the chances of walking in off the street and being better than anyone else? Slim to none. But it doesn't matter. What matters is feeling a sense of hope for Bliss as she has that opportunity to move beyond a life she hates into one she loves, finding that one thing in life that makes her feel more than she has ever before.

The acting in the film is solid, especially by Ellen Page. Changing from the shy Bliss who enters contests at her mothers request to becoming the young woman who makes her own decisions is fleshed out in her performance. Page has done such a great job with various roles in films like JUNO, HARD CANDY and even X-MEN that I'm beginning to think she's one of the best actresses around these days.

The supporting cast also does a great job. Barrymore takes on a small part as one of the derby girls as does singer Eve and stuntwoman Zoe Bell. But the one who stood out for me was Kristen Wiig as Maggie Mayhem. Wiig is one of the series regulars on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE these days and what I've seen of her there is far too over the top. But like Robin Williams when given the right director, she comes through with a great performance as a single mom skater who acts as surrogate mom to Bliss.

Barrymore's first outing as director shows that she can put together a well made film. It's entertaining, fun and delivers everything the previews said it would. As I said, this isn't Oscar material but it is a fun film. Predictable at times but its less about the end result and more about the path taken to get there that makes movies like these work or fail. In this case, the movie works. So take a couple turns around the track and give this one a look.

This film is amazing! It's got everything, an indie, fresh, real feel to it, a lot of great laughs and some very intense heartfelt moments. Drew is a lot more than a pretty face---it seems she's also a great judge of screenplays and a great director. The casting is absolutely perfect. Every line, every expression, every scene is pitch perfect. The acting is wow! If you can watch this without laughing yourself sore and tearing up (in a manly way, of course) then you're obviously suffering from the same degenerative brain disease as the reviewers who rate it below 4 stars. And what's amazing is there is nothing really gross or offensive in it. A few off color lines is all that gives it the 13+ rating. For gawd's sake, if you love great movies, rent this one and give Drew a chance to make another one.

It seems, this work, unwittingly, is a good parody on talking of family values and sex-as-pure-reproduction only. Accurate lovemaking-scenes add to run of a screening enriched with swearing and sexism.

I thought this would be a very raunchy movie, but it turned out to have more more heart than you would think. Some people might find it slow, but I find that slower indie movies are much more realistic and easier to relate to. I will mention that it might offend some people's sensibilities. Obviously there's sex an mildly extended blowjob scene, and some tastefully done full on sex scenes in the middle. Obviously premarital sex and babies, and treating reproduction as a business arrangement. Lastly they throw in some cocaine, which I found rather jarring and unnecessary. Still, funny movie with a core that I think a lot of people can relate to.

Overall, I liked this movie. It dealt with the polar opposite of what most movies about "baby fever" are focused on. This time it's about a guy who finds out he won't be able to have children and suddenly, he finds himself questioning what he wants out of life.

There were some very predictable parts, but that's to be expected with a movie that's meant to be a rom-com. The character development of Jonah was good through the movie. Like another reviewer stated, there were times that the movie seemed to be slow, but when dealing with the subject matter it made sense for more "showing" versus telling to happen.

My biggest complaint was the ending. It felt unfinished. Even just a small snippet of Jonah and Stevie in the not-so-distant future would have made it feel complete. Had there been a true conclusion/finale, I would've given it 4 stars.

This was a pleasure! Ryan Kwanten has a face and expression that emote such feeling that he hardly has to speak the words. He created Jason Stackhouse and is nothing like that character, yet we love and laugh with him every episode of True Blood. These movies should be more advertised to us happily-ever-after people so that we can relate them to each other and make them a hit. We don't need gratuitous death, just a slightly complicated resolved happy ending. Life is already full of misery. Give us just the right amount of sex and a great epilogue and we'll keep coming back for more. Someone should cast Ryan Kwanten in a hit that showcases his empathy. He would be a major star and I being 62 and not a beefcake groupie, would watch anything in which he starred. Enjoyed this movie thoroughly and would recommend it to all happily-ever-after junkies. (The other two major characters were also perfectly cast.)

JUDGMENT CALL:

There have been a good number of comedies that took on the best friends looking to raise a child together. From the 2010, Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston film "The Switch" to 2011′s Jennifer Westfeldt film "Friends with Kids" and in 2012, we have the Australian romantic comedy "Not Suitable for Children".

Where the wanting to have kids shown on films are usually the female protagonist, "Not Suitable for Children" goes a different route and gives us a single man who wants to have a child, because he will no longer be able to have children after treatment for testicular cancer.

For the character of Jonah (portrayed by "True Blood" actor Ryan Kwanten), his life changes when he is told by his doctor that he has cancer and although treatable, they need to remove a testicle. Because he is in his 20′s, a party guy (who runs parties for a living), he feels that life has dealt him a severe blow of not having any possibility to have children ever.

While his two good friends and business partners, Stevie (portrayed by Sarah Snook) and Gus (portrayed by Ryan Corr) try to give him moral support, they try their best to make him feel positive about his life.

So, he contacts his ex-girlfriend and women he has dated and trying to find a woman he can get pregnant, so he can raise a child. Of course, no woman is not going to take him up on the deal, but his best friend Stevie tries to give him encouraging advice of possibly helping out a lesbian couple, which also doesn't work out.

Being a very good friend of Jonah for so long, Stevie realizes that she wants to have a kid before she turns 40 and so she tries to have a mutual deal that would help both her and Jonah at the same time. But of course, after continued sex in order to get Stevie pregnant, both start to realize that their may be some feelings that the two have for each other.

While the film is charming and fun, it's also straightforward and banal. It is predictable and there are not many surprises with this independent film.

As for the Blu-ray release, picture quality is good but a little soft at times, the soundtrack features a good amount of music, so dialogue, music are crystal clear while the surround also takes advantage of the more crowd environments and overall party ambiance. And you get two special features plus a trailer.

Overall, "Not Suitable for Children" is an enjoyable independent film from Australia that takes the "best friends try to have a child together" storyline, but with a male protagonist wanting to have a child. While predictable and straightforward, "Not Suitable for Children" is a fun and enjoyable film worth checking out!

Arachnophobia (1990)

Arachnophobia"Arachnophobia" is a clever comedy/thriller sure to scare the spider-phobes out there. Jeff Daniels and Harley Jane Kozak star as Dr. Ross and Molly Jennings, a young couple who have moved to the country to start his medical practice. Little do they know that a huge, deadly spider has arrived from South America and is reproducing a lot! One by one, town residents start dropping like flies, until Ross figures out they were all bitten by spiders. This brings back memories of a childhood trauma that left him with a paralyzing fear of spiders and the spider's nest is right in Ross' barn.

There are many creepy scenes of menacing spiders that will have you looking around to make sure none are near you. They must have used some robotic spiders, but they all looked very real to me. The idyllic rural setting contrasts nicely with the intensely scary stalking spiders. Daniels is perfect as the dedicated doctor, and John Goodman has a small but funny part as an exterminator. The movie may be too scary for very young children, but others will giggle a little and gasp a lot.

I thought that archnophobia was a great movie. It was Thrilling and funny, and I recomend it to anyone who likes a good thriller. I think that the guy who gave it one star needs to get a life and stop taking things to seriously. He's a little too attached to spiders if you know what I mean.

This often amusing, sometimes suspenseful film about killer spiders starts out in the dense jungles of Venezuela, with bug-O-maniac Julian Sands, as he tracks down a new species of lethal as well as big and hairy arachnid. One of these hairy creatures finds its way to sweet suburbia in California, using a wooden coffin as transport, and starts mating with the local spider population, causing havoc and rigor mortis.

City transplant Jeff Daniels, a doctor with severe arachnophobia, who wants the quiet country life as long as he doesn't have to see a spider, finds himself the center of controversy because of the deaths, and his newly bought house infested with the critters. Daniels, one of Hollywood's more underrated actors, gives a terrific performance as Dr. Jennings, as he tries some hands-on therapy for his phobia.

John Goodman is hilarious as the town exterminator, who if he can't kill 'em with insecticide, uses his big boots, and others in the fine cast are Harley Jane Kozak as Molly Jennings, Henry Jones as old Dr. Metcalf, and Stuart Pankin as stubborn Sheriff Parsons. This was the feature film directorial debut for Frank Marshall, who has been known mostly as a producer, mainly for Stephen Spielberg's films. A good score by Trevor Jones (with songs like Jimmy Buffett's "Don't Bug Me") adds to the overall enjoyment of this fun creature feature, which takes us back to the days when the bugs were filmed in black and white.

Total running time is 103 minutes.

A genial, light-weight "horror" film. The movie is good looking, well performed, and well shot. The suspense is leavened with humor and the plot is routine. Really, a good intro-to-horror film for someone who wants to understand the genre without actually being scared, just a little tense with anticipation at times. John Goodman pushes the film toward the humorous side whenever he appears.

Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

Me, Myself & IreneMe, Myself, and Irene was the much anticipated follow up to There's Something About Mary. The problem was that when it hit the theaters, the hype had gone, and the movie did not do as well as anyone could have anticipated. The truth is that many moviegoers missed one of Jim Carrey's funniest performances.

Carrey plays the mild mannered Rhode Island Trooper who has a split personality. He is now Hank, and Charlie. He then has to escort a prisoner back to New York so she can pay off a parking ticket. Renee Zellweger does a decent job as the prisoner, but the real laughs come from the over the top performance from Carrey. There are many gags in this film that push what should be done to people, but you are still laughing despite of all that you see.

This film was sadly overlooked in its theatrical run due to other summer films such as Scary Movie, and the horrible Nutty Proffesor II. This film is much better than both of those, and deserves a second look on video and DVD.

If you are a fan of the Farrelly brothers other movies, "King Pin", "There's Something About Mary", and "Dumb and Dumber", then you will really enjoy this movie. The Farrelly brothers and Jim Carrey are a match made in heaven. Their style suits Carrey's, as the movie is full of the physical comedy and sight gags which are Carrey's forte.

This is a pretty funny, though somewhat sophomoric, movie. It is also pretty filthy, at times, and definitely not for the movie goer of delicate sensibilities. There is something to offend just about everyone, so be prepared.

The basic premise of the movie is simple. A Rhode Island state trooper, Charley Baileygates, played by Jim Carrey, marries the prettiest and smartest girl in town. After she gives birth to triplets for whom Charley could not possibly be the father, for reasons obvious to the viewer, she later leaves him for another man, her soul mate and likely father of the triplets. She leaves Charley with the triplets, whom he raises as his own. The cuckolded Charley goes on to become the town joke and a seriously repressed man.

Eighteen years later, he snaps and begins to express his anger through an alternate personality and quintessential bad boy who calls himself Hank. Hank has attitude and plenty of it, and he lets everyone know that he is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore. Charley's superiors send him to be evaluated, and he is given medication to control his psychiatric disorder.

Enter Irene, played by Rener Zellweger. Charley is asked to escort her to upstate New York where she is ostensibly wanted on a hit and run. Unbeknownst to either of them, she is being hunted down by dirty cops who are looking to silence her, as it is believed that she may have information that could take down her crooked ex boyfriend who is being investigated by the EPA.

During their trip, Hank, Charley, and Irene have a host of advantures, which are often hilarious, as Charley and Hank battle over who will become the dominant personality. The low key Zellweger is a good foil for the rubber faced Carrey's physical comedy. As Charley and Irene are pursued by the dirty cops, the now grown triplets, funny and profane, also add another element, as they go to their father's rescue.

The DVD has something for everyone, as it has a plethora of bonus features. It is a DVD that all Carrey fans should have in their collection.

3.5 stars. This was a stronger movie than I expected. The first hour, I literally had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard. The cow scene, to me, was just priceless. But honestly, I didn't quite understand what Irene was supposed to know and how it involved the characters chasing them and frankly I don't care. This is by no means Carrey's best work, since he was obviously trying to channel Dirty Harry for his Hank character, but he successfully gets me to care about Charlie. His three 'sons' in my opinion were waaay over the top and could have been toned down quite a bit. Zwellger obviously did this film because she was dating Carrey at the time. The results was that she came across more as a prop than a real character and that's remarkable for someone with her talent. The Farrelly brothers' oddball comedy is a hit in most areas which makes it easy to recommend this comedy if you're truely in a goofy mood.

In the recent past, there have been several motion pictures with plots involving split personalities, "The Nutty Professor" among others. "Me, Myself and Irene" is, without a doubt, the funniest, most creative and fresh take on the rare instance where two different types of the same individual are confined to one human body. Peter and Bobby Farrelly used Rhode Island as the setting for the well-executed plot that featured unheard of and hilarious comedic twists. Every unusual thing you couldn't think of, they (Farrelly's) did. As the movie begins, the plot is poured mildly onto the viewer. In a small town in Rhode Island directly north of South America, an honest, by the books police officer who gives 110% day in and day out is thrown a curveball in life due to his painstakingly forgiving personality. When his wife runs off with a dwarf, a line is crossed through the subconscious mind of Charlie (Jim Carrey) and, out of nowhere, an alter ego is born that takes the duty of making up for all the times that Charlie was taken advantage of. He is given the mischevous name Hank, and Charlie has a lack of control over him until he, more or less, fights him. Both halves of Jim Carrey are given the duty of safely escorting Irene (Renee Zellweger) to a court trial across the states, where Charlie and Hank switch places every now and then. Hank causes controversy to castmates in the movie with his role as a perverted and arrogant degenerate. Throughout all of this, Charlie does the right thing by taking care of his three young adult sons, whom have a quality that could not be guessed if you haven't seen or read about this movie. Although it is the funniest movie I have ever seen, it stands as one of the more offensive films that I have watched. Despite a few objectionable scenes, it blows away all of the long-running comedy classics, from "Blazing Saddles" to "Monty Python". As icing on the cake, there are cameo's from a couple of NHL superstars and a smooth looking tennis player.

What the heck is going on with the studios that pull out favorites from their libraries and then proceed to put less content on the Blu-ray discs than they did for the DVD releases of the same films? Seriously, if you are going to put out a library title, make darned sure that you offer up a reason to actually spend the money to upgrade and move to Blu instead of just keeping the DVD release and living with it.

I love this movie. It is wicked, deranged, twisted, warped, and all of the other similar words you could pull from a Roget's thesaurus that mean the same basic thing. It is also insanely funny. Jim Carrey plays Charlie Baileygates, a member of the finest police force known to man. A man who is just too darned nice, and who has let the world treat him as a doormat for far too long. Eventually all of the abuse that Charlie has taken overwhelms him and an split personality arises within Charlie that releases 'Hank' upon the world. Hank is Charlie's mean and wicked alter ego, and thanks to an on screen battle between the two personalities and appearances by Hank at the absolute worst time for Charlie we get to see a riotously funny movie.

Renée Zellweger also stars and adds to the fun in this movie as an individual that Charlie must safely transport on a road trip. While transporting her, Charlie and Hank fight the internal struggle within Charlie to bring his personalities together so he doesn't wind up causing himself or others harm, as well as perhaps losing his dream job working as a Rhode Island state trooper.

The DVD version of the movie is a classic for me. It offers several nice extras, some of which were inexplicably left out of this Blu-ray release. I really wish the studio hadn't gone that route as I'd love to recommend this title for purchase, but rewarding such tactics just seems completely wrong to me. The bare minimum would be to keep everything that was on the DVD, and really customers should expect to get *more* for their money when being asked to 'double dip' on buying these library titles. Getting less is not to be rewarded, so I'd have to say rent this title or get the much less expensive DVD release instead of the Blu-ray here. While the picture quality is better on the Blu-ray, it's not enough of a bump to really make paying for this disc worth it. At least not for me. :-(
