Suck (2010)

SuckOkay, so maybe it's not quite the classic that "Shaun" is, but this is a really, really fun horror comedy. I rent all the video store horror movies and it is rare that one comes along that's as good as "Suck." Well-shot, well-acted, great story, "Suck" feels like it's taunting critics with its title, but then it turns out to be a really solid film with what I thought would be just your typical blink-and-you'll-miss-them cameos until it turns out that Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins (who is HILARIOUS) and Alex Lifeson are all just characters in the movie. Who knew Lifeson was so funny?

The best thing about "Suck" is that while it's a good vampire comedy, it's also a play on indie band cautionary tale movies that has a few salient and pointed things to say about fame but is never overbearing or preachy.

I would really recommend this movie to horror fans. It's really entertaining and a lot of fun and you can really feel the makers' love of both horror and rock-n-roll.

a couple of posters have made comparison to rocky horror. thought this movie was better. alice cooper is on-screen for more than just a cameo and adds something to the mix. also a good performance by malcolm mcdowell as the vampire hunter. this is one of those movies that people have barely heard about now but will gain momentum as time passes. it's on my halloween shelf to watch yearly at this point.

Sorry. I couldn't think of a non-cheesy title for the review.

So Suck is pretty under-the-radar at this point. It might end up being one of those movies that the trendy dudes talk about knowing about BEFORE it was popular though. For a low-budget movie it looks really great and has a great cast and fantastic rock legends for cameos and small roles. McDowell is great as "Eddie VanHelsing." As are Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins to name just a few of the rockers in the movie. But the primary cast is also really good. The star of the movie is also the writer/director and he does a very good job playing the "straight man" as it were. The humor is pretty spot on and flows naturally. The only thing keeping the movie from being really great is the pacing and the conclusion. The pacing is sort of all over the place and doesn't build to a worthwhile climax. And the end of the movie is just a little underwhelming. Almost like the writer/director/star knew he had to come up with something after the climax, but ran out of steam before he got there. And even though it is a comedy, I would have liked to have seen some moral repercussions for the main characters.

But it's still a very enjoyable movie, and if you're a rock aficionado you'll love pointing out cameos from veteran rockers since just about every minor and bit role is filled by a rock star. Suck should be enjoyed by groups of friends, or better yet, bandmates.

I enjoyed this movie but don't consider it to be a 5/5 level experience. Positives: True music aficionados will undoubtedly enjoy all the cameos; the production values are surprisingly high and the acting is generally quite good; it features the girl from Hot Tub Time Machine who had a memorable hot tub crying scene; its witty good dialogue with enough humor sprinkled in throughout; some very creative and artistic scenes (camera work, use of lighting, use of limited sfx, etc.). On the negative side, I found the story to be a bit slow and lacking engaging elements. While it was certainly fun, its just not that memorable; the story proceeds without any particular punch or substantial conflict. Again, please understand that I enjoyed this film, but its important to understand that its may not necessarily qualify as a 5/5 on everyone's scale. Definitely recommended as a rental, but be duly advised on a purchase decision.

I've been running into some great Vampire films lately out there underneath the bats radar, & 2009 Canadian film, "Suck," is no exception. Clever, cutting edge Vampire comedy, with a drop of musical in it, about a struggling nowhere rock band, who turns into Vampires & finds success. Yes, this plot line has been used before, but never quite like this, as hilarious black comedy abounds, with imaginative twists on rock n' roll life on the road & Vampires!

You got to love a film that features surprisingly great, funny, witty appearances by, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, & Henry Rollins. A surprising, I'd never know it was Alex Lifeson of Rush, as a gung-ho US boarder patrol officer, LOL! Moby, as Buffalo, NY's, biggest rock star ego is a hoot as "Beef," the lead singer for a band who fans throw raw meat at while performing! How about Malcolm McDowell as EVH, that is, Eddy Van Helsing. Funny stuff! Then there is Dimitri Coats, as the Vampire who starts this all, who looks like Johnny Depp's "Mad Hatter" character on steroids, turned Vampire, which makes for a pretty convincing bloodsucker!

Wink's & nod's abound in this film to rock culture & Vampire lore. You have to watch intently to catch them all, & "Hugo" the roadie for the band as a Renfield type character about steals the show!

This film does not take it's self seriously, & you shouldn't either, otherwise the whole point will be missed, that point is fun! You have to stick with it, as it gets funnier as it progresses, & Director, Rob Stefaniuk is one to watch!

For lovers of Vampires with a wicked since of humor, you'll suck this one up!

Love & Other Drugs (2010)

Love & Other DrugsI was very surprised to find this movie to my liking. I went (rather grudgingly I'll admit) to see this movie and I was blown away, it wasn't just a comedy, it wasn't just a romance, it was a deep, intricate experience that mirrors (to the best of hollywood's ability) the real relational component that we never really know what will come next with any of our relationships. This movie throws you for several unexpected twists and turns but this is one not to miss! Do be warned it's rated R for a reason, you see just about everything Hathaway and Gyllenhaal have to offer. This movie also packs some pretty good comic value. Ultimately its a heartwarming story about a man who had never found a desire to approach anything with all of his heart and/or ability until he meets Maggie, then everything changes. This will definitely be added to my personal collection just as soon as it comes on DVD.

I loved this movie. It had me laughing, and crying, and it was sexy, and poignant, and very, very well acted. Jake and Anne are wonderful together. Very believeable. I could have done with a little less of the "brother" character, played by Josh Gad, and I wish Jake had more scenes with Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt, but I really did love it. When it ended, I just wanted to go right back to the beginning again!

Buy Love & Other Drugs (2010) Now

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is based on Jamie Reidy's highly regarded novel 'Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesmen' and as adapted for the screen by Charles Randolph, Marshall Herskowitz and Edward Zwick (who also directs). It is a little jewel of a film. If the portion of the film that deals far too long with a silly Radio City Music Hall show of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals training program bores the audience (it should have been severely edited for many reasons), it is worth the wait for the actual romance story that follows.

Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) can't hold a job, preferring to focus on womanizing, much to the disdain of his wealthy obese brother Josh (Josh Gad), and his parents (George Segal and Jill Clayburgh in a role that was to be her last). Jamie best friend Bruce (Oliver Platt) joins Jamie in becoming a pharmaceutical rep for Pfizer and the two are placed on the road to push Zoloft and Zithromax, finding that the market is hoarded by Trey Hannigan (Gabriel Macht), an Eli Lily salesman selling Prozac. Jamie encounters Trey in the office of Dr. Knight (Hank Azaria), studies Trey's success and his own failure, and in the process encounters a patient of Dr. Knight, the free spirited gorgeous Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway) who has been with both Trey and Dr. Knight. Jamie's lack of success pushing Zoloft suddenly reverses when Pfizer comes out with Viagra: Jamie is a natural to be the leading salesman for this new enhancing drug or is he? There is a strange chemistry that develops between Jamie and Maggie and despite their unlikely qualifications as relationship candidates, each finds in the other the qualities that turn wild one nighters into a solid love affair. Maggie has Parkinsonism and that aspect alters the way each approach the relationship. But it is the magic of how this blossoms into one the screen's best romances that is the gift of the film.

The story is frequently disrupted with sidebars that are supposed to provide comic relief but in the end simply take up too much space away from Jamie and Maggie. Had the film been edited to clean its shelves the way Jamie cleaned the physicians' sample shelves of Prozac the total product would have been even better. What the film brings into focus is the enormously maturing talents of Gyllenhaal and Hathaway: they may just be the next great Hollywood silver screen couple. This is 'a fine (and sensitive) romance' and well worth watching. Grady Harp, March 11

Jake Gyllenhal's and Anne Hathaway's performances and charisma made this a great watch for me. They are both compelling and beautiful to watch. I liked the story too, it was different from your standard Rom-Com fare, with Hathaway's character struggling with Parkinson's disease, and Gyllenhal's good-time boy having to grow-up to deal with it. The drug company sub-plot got a little heavy-handed, as did some of the psycho-babble speeches ("tell me 4 good things about yourself" she says to him at one point a little too self-help-workshoppy to feel real.) But still a good movie, and certainly a step above your average romantic comedy.

I've had this movie in my collection for a while but I hadn't been in the mood to watch it. I don't know what the hell my problem was... This was a very good movie! I've liked both Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway in every movie I've seen them in, but I never considered them my favorites until Love & Other Drugs.

I have to address the issue of the nudity in this movie. I can't say that I wasn't shocked to see Anne Hathaway (Princess Diaries) pull out her boob and flaunt around naked as a jay bird throughout a good portion of the movie. I even made the comment that I felt like I was watching soft core porn at times. But the story line was great and seeing Jake Gyllenhaal's perfectly sculpted butt was definitely a bonus.

Jawbreaker (1999)

JawbreakerOccasionally some brilliant movie makers slip in without fanfare what should become a classic in a genre critics love to hate. Critics probably didn't even have to watch this to decide to trash it, but if so they missed a real gem! Rose McGowan is a most tauntingly intirguing villain in a role she was born to play. And Rebecca Gayheart really shines as a major supporting character. Too bad she's so entrenched in TV acting and hence movies are mostly robbed of a wonderful talent. Were it not for the Academy's bias against this kind of movie, those two could have been shoo-ins for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Get yourself a video of this, avoid an excessively creepy night, don't eat to much, hold on to your chair and prepare to be thrilled!

This movie rocks!! So entertaining! best quote:

Most might look at this film and see it as a total bomb, but I see it as sinfully delightful in it's badness! It has a style and attitude all it's own within the overbearing genre aimed at teenage/20-somethings.

Quick Synopsis: The coolest girls in school, ruled by Courtney (the Queen Bee) decide to play a harmless prank on one of their girlfriends, Liz, for her birthday. Sadly, the prank turned tragic when it resulted in Liz's death -an occurence that was accidentally witnessed by the nerdiest girl in school, Fern Mayo. Now Courtney and company must strike a deal with Fern (they give her a makeover and help her become beautiful and popular...like them) in order to keep her quiet.

This film has a dark comedy quality to it, much like the movie Heathers (THX Version) did. The characters have an odd and quirky manner of speaking, and it makes the dialogue somewhat broken and fascinating at the same time. Rose McGowan shines as the 'Satan-in-heels' Courtney Shayne. The wardrobe and filming sequences are captivating (as usual with teen flicks, there are plenty of slow motion hot chicks strutting down the school hallways). The music fits perfectly with each scene, and compliments the edgy attitude of the movie.

Still...one can't help but notice that this movie is certainly not Oscar material. It's appeal is to a very general, young (I'd say about 15-25 age range) female audience. Men might be entertained briefly by it's gorgeous leading ladies in revealing clothing (honesly though, what high schoolers actually dress that way?), but their interest might quickly fade as the thin plot and bizarre story starts to unfold.

I have to say that I love this movie. It's fun and twisted at the same time, and even though it's never going to rank high on many "must see" movie lists, it will always have a place on mine.

Bottom line, watch it and enjoy it for the somewhat unique film it is...even if you end up thinking it was kind of bad.

Jawbreaker is a film about teen angst, popularity, deception and manipulation. It is utterly horrifying in that it portrays the desperation of the popular to stay popular and the need of the outcasts to enter their fashionable ranks. But is their delicious perfection all that it seems? How far are they willing to go to stay on top? And what happens when one of those so-called outcasts has to be grudgingly groomed to become one of them -because she knows that they are covering up the (accidental) murder of a friend?

Jawbreaker is a joyride of a bitchy, biting comedy that will strike a note with everyone who ever attended high school -no matter what group you found yourself in!

Don't miss Jawbreaker! I'ts an absolute delight!

I watched this at my friend's house and it was hilarious. Not only were the girls extremely hot, but the story was hilarious.

Courtney in particular was cool. My brother says I'd be her if I was a girl. But, since I'm not, I'll settle with marrying her. I feel bad for Julie though. Her life took a bad turn, but so does Courtney's at the end. I like the ending of the movie, it was good.

Even Marcy turns away from Courtney in the end. Too bad for Courtney. When she's talking to Vylette at one point on the phone, she says "Courtney Shane is priority number 1". That was hilarious.

No clue who that band is at the prom, but their music is cool.

All in all, good movie. Don't watch if you're offended by sex, cussing, smoking, drinking, or teenage infatuation, though. For everyone else, GET IT!

Cheeky! (2000)

Cheeky!Cult Epics is turning out fantastic blu-rays these days that are miles better than their old DVDs. No more PAL-NTSC conversion issues, or any of the other crap that plagued their DVDs.

The blu-ray is great! Incredible image. The detail is amazing. The colors are great. It looks like film. Audio is good with an option for English dub or Italian language with English subtitles.

As far as the film...wow, lead star is gorgeous! And, yes, she's AMAZING in high definition! And Tinto Brass directed, co-wrote it, so it's certainly sleazy, yet with a happy, lightweight attitude.

If you have the DVD, throw it away and order this blu-ray! The quality of the upgrade is outstanding. Seriously.

Now, hopefully they'll bring some of their other back catalog to high definition (like Tinto Brass and The Beast to start with...)

If you don',t have this movie in blu-ray, get it right away. The picture clarity is outstanding. The dvd isn,t bad, but the blu-ray is much better. This movie is filled with beautiful women and they,re naked almost the entire movie. The sex isn',t graphic, but extemely close. Camara angles and dialogue make up for what you don,t see.The women were physically appealing to me because they were very curvey, and they all had natural breast.I was particulary attracted to Cheeky,s girlfriend, the one who was trying to find Cheeky an apartment. She was very attractive, and again, not big but had curves on top of curves.

Anyone familiar with the work of Tinto Brass can imagine the light romp in store here. This is perhaps my favourite of his naughty stories, as it does not try to be anything other than a lighthearted visual ride. From the opening scenes of everyone in a park up to some hanky panky, to the more steamy, sauna, lesbian scenes, the tone is just right for uncomplicated enjoyment. It seems everyone in Italy does not wear knickers, and a fine thing too.

The bluray tranfer is noticeably better than the old DVD in my library.

Dabangg Bollywood Blu Ray With English Subtitles (2010)

Dabangg Bollywood Blu Ray With English SubtitlesLarger than life and vastly entertaining, DABANGG (meaning "Fearless") shattered the box office record in India, and now 3 IDIOTS, the previous record-holder, is all pouty. DABANGG's success hinges mostly on star Salman Khan's drawing power, but you can't front on the highly stylized action sequences, the polished cinematography, the sizzling musical numbers, and the cinematic debut of the gorgeous Sonakshi Sinha. The film boasts a masala of derivative plot points, but this is one of those cases in which the flashy bells and whistles work hard to compensate for the lack of narrative substance. Salman Khan is a friggin' rock star, man.

DABANGG takes place in the sprawling northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a place that turns out to be a hotbed of combustible politics and police corruption. Salman Khan plays Police Inspector Chulbul Pandey, a character whom on the surface isn't unsimilar to his role in Wanted (Bollywood Movie). Chulbul Pandey, an unrepentant crooked cop, stalks his world with an unmatched swagger and a p0rn mustache. And he is the film's hero. Raised in strained family dynamics, Chulbul resents his indifferent step-father and useless step-brother, and this has surely affected how he sees the world and his sense of ethics. His mother serves as his only anchor. It's left up to you to determine whether he gains a measure of redemption. Me, I don't think he mends his ways all that much.

Do you appreciate or feel distaste for take charge men? Men who assume they know what's best for you? My eyebrows were consistently raised at Chulbul's rather perfunctory courtship of the beautiful pottery girl Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha). But I guess some girls dig that approach. Not that Chulbul doesn't melt at certain stages of his wooing. He is obviously very smitten with Rajo. To observe that tired old cliche, he's a better man for it. It makes him aware of the importance of salvaging his estranged family.

But all the soap opera hand-wringing feels obligatory, something to tide us over until we get to the bits that we actually came to the theater for: which is force of nature Salman Khan kicking tail with panache. With invisibly rendered wires lending him unearthly grace and athleticism, Salman Khan takes out armed goons in several electrifyingly staged action sequences: in a warehouse during a bust, and during a rooftop shoot-out, and on a train platform as assassins spring out of the woodwork. However, I do sense a whiff of plagiarism. I recall having seen some of the action flourishes in earlier films (the firehose routine is from ROMEO MUST DIE; the window slamming shut just as the thug is jumping thru it is from DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM). I probably missed other bits. I'll say this, even if "inspired" by other films, the stunts and fighty fights are stunning stuff.

But this is Bollywood, right? DABANGG follows that successful blueprint. It is action-packed, exaggerated, boisterous, lushly romantic, and so vibrant. It is unashamedly all of those things. The sleek production values suggest an impressive movie budget. I appreciate Salman Khan's having a sense of humor about himself. He willingly spoofs his action hero image. I love his ring tone dance. It makes his "hero" cop more likable. But you merely have to check out his performance in the amazing title song "Hud Dabangg" to realize why he's had such longevity. Salman Khan exudes charisma. Hours after watching DABANGG I'm still going around, jerking my belt buckle this way and that. As if that could make me fearless.

This two-disc set offers the film presentation with optional English sub-titles and includes the following bonus featurettes (but without English sub-titles): "The Making of DABANGG" (00:40:53 minutes long) and "The Making of the Songs" (00:27:07 minutes long).

Dabangg is in my top three of all-time favorite Hindi movies. It's Salman Khan's show all the way, but so many other elements of the film are wonderful as well. The technicolor opening credits let you know that this film is not going to take itself entirely seriously, which is confirmed when, in the middle of one of the opening action sequences, Salman breaks into a hilarious little dance to the tune of a mobile ringtone.

The film centers on Chulbul Pandey, a sometimes-corrupt, sometimes-noble, but always hilarious and kick-ass cop in a dusty, provincial town. The film could easily have been titled "The Adventures of Chulbul Pandey": Pandey-ji makes enemies with corrupt politicians; Pandey-ji fights with his brother; Pandey-ji navigates falling head-over-heels in love with the town beauty.

Salman Khan's characterization of Chulbul Pandey is pitch-perfect; he's both vicious and vulnerable. And it has introduced a whole new set of trademark moves into the canon of Salman-the-superstar: the belt-buckle swagger, sunglasses hooked over the back of his shirt-collar, and wildly drunken dancing. The filmmakers found a perfect match in newcomer Sonakshi Sinha, who plays the female lead with sensitivity and understatement (in addition to which, she's stunning). Sonakshi and Salman look wonderful paired together.

The songs oh, the songs! The opening number, "Dabangg", is rhythmic and throbbing with simple yet highly effective choreography. The romantic "Tere Mast Do Nain" will have you falling in love and laughing at the same time. The supporting cast is excellent, from Arbaaz Khan as the slightly smarmy but not entirely bad brother (and Salman's real-life brother), to the sympathetic performance of Dimple Kapadia as the mother.

In short, this film is everything a Hindi entertainer should be. Watch it.

Certain holidays in India belong to stars that choose to release their movies on those days and ensuring they become a hit. Aamir Khan ahs released his last two films on Decemeber 25th i.e Ghajini and 3 Idiots. Salman had his last hit released on Eid i.e. Wanted and this year he seems to have secured Eid as his day of release with Dabanng.

Hell bent on shattering records it has earned in two weeks what Ghajini did over its entire lifetime, Dabanng is the flavor of the season, like an old wine in a new bottle. In a gist the story is of two step brothers Salman ( Chulbul Pandey ) and Arbaaz Khan ( Makhichand Panday ) harbor small time resentment towards each other when a serious event turns in to deadly enmity. The movie is essentially driven by treatment of the subject and by witty dialogue and some superb fight sequences especially in the opening scene, the railway station and in the climax. The music is also great with some exceptional tracks including the title track and has been filmed extremely well. I was disappointed in the item number by Malaika Arora because I thought she did not exude the necessary raunchiness that the song required. There are also several character artistes but they are hardly there, Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar , Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna are wasted. Sonakshi Sinha sparkles and oozes freshness in every scene, the camera makes her look radiant from all angles. The movie right from the opening scenes till the end belongs to Salman Khan, who displays his star power by transforming himself completely in the role of Chulbul Robinhood Panday. This is Salman like you have never seen before, I think he is the sole reason that the movie worked. He shines through the film and will be remembered for this for a long time to come. This is a ground breaking film for him, he finds himself and delivers entertainment that will find new fans and loyalists to love him even more. Last year he gave us Wanted and this year Dabanng with the ending lines suggesting a sequel. Go and watch this one for pure entertainment and paisa vasooli......4 stars 9/23/10

This Christmas (2007)

This ChristmasThis was a wonderful movie. The ending brought tears to my eyes. I do agree, as many reviewers have already posted that this an adult family film. So put those kiddies to bed first. I highly recommend this film for purchase or rental. Enjoy.

This Christmas looked like it was going to pass without any cinematic holiday cheer. Luckily audiences will find a special gift at their local multiplexes from Preston A. Whitmore, a filmmaker whose latest picture comes wrapped up with so much holiday mush that it would be hard for even the biggest scrooge to scowl at its spirited Christmas message

It's the most wonderful time of the year again, and the Whitfield family plans to continue their holiday tradition of bringing the entire clan back home for a few days of presents, good eating and family squabbling. The only problem with This Christmas is that each of the children has brought more than just gifts. Absence without leave, surprise pregnancies, interracial relationships, cheating husbands and angry bookies are just a few of the surprises in store for the family's matriarch, Ma Dear, making it a Christmas that will either tear the Whitfield's apart or bring them closer than they've ever been before.

With This Christmas, Preston A. Whitmore successfully bounced back from his sophomore slump. The choice to "Crossover" into the holiday genre is a big move, though looking at the filmmaker's oeuvre, he seemingly defies categorization. Written with heart, This Christmas isn't just impressive for its well balanced drama and comedy. Its ability to transcend its targeted audience to become a holiday film that can be enjoyed by anyone who has ever experienced family dysfunction makes the picture a refreshing surprise.

With an all-star, African American cast including Delroy Lindo, Loretta Devine, Idris Elba and the lovely Sharon Leal, Screen Gems certainly seems to be pushing the racial factor when marketing This Christmas. While this strategy will probably draw in adequate box-office receipts (See Tyler Perry's success), This Christmas will draw the majority of its fans next Christmas when it finds a wider audience on DVD.

Though many of the family's problems translate to touching and humorous bits of cinema, This Christmas ultimately suffers from one fatal flaw, too much conflict and no easy way out of it. There is so much going on, that the tidiest and most satisfying conclusion seems far too difficult to reach. It also seems that the character of Joe, played by Delroy Lindo, has the answers to everything. Able to pacify everyone from street thugs to the U.S. government in a single night, Joe gives Santa Claus a run for his money on this Christmas Eve.

However plausibility isn't the strong suit of the Whitfield family. There are plenty of nit-picky details audiences will pick up on that could easily take them out of the narrative. While viewers might scoff at bits such as buying the picture-perfect Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, the performances from the actors, tight editing and gorgeous cinematography will help get you through This Christmas.

If filmmakers should write what they know, then Preston A. Whitmore certainly knows Christmas and family far better than war or basketball. A solid holiday outing sure to please any audiences that comes across the film, Whitmore's well executed dramady should resonate far longer than This Christmas.

-Joe Russo

Mamma Mia! The Movie (Universal's 100th Anniversary) (2008)

Mamma Mia! The MovieFrom what I know of the history of this play/movie the two ladies that worked so hard to get ABBA and others to put this together in GB are now two of the wealthiest women in England and from what I have seen it drives the critics nuts, ("lousy, bad camera work, Brosnen can not carry a tune etc., etc.,) the bottom line folks, this movie fits like that old comfortable shirt your wife (the critic) wants you to throw away because it looks "awful". Well, the heck with em, I like my shirt, and I like meatloaf and mashed potatos, and I like Mama Mia, maybe it is mind candy, maybe it does not reach the high brow standard, but it "feels good" so the pundants can take their "expert" advise and put it where "the sun don't shine", this movie makes me smile and who knew Meryl Streep could sing like that the "Winner Takes it All" maybe very poorly filmed according to the so called experts because the one I saw said "get me off the Merry-go-Round" but it sure sent chills down my back let the experts rave I know what I like, and this film made me laugh in times like these I will take that any old time over what the high brows think I should see!

PS as for Mr. Brosnan's singing and why he did the film straight from the horses mouth -

Q. What drew you to this movie? A. My agent called and said, "Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!," and I said, "I'm in!" I didn't even know who I was playing. I kept thinking, I want to work with this wonderful actress.

Q. How did you fare with all the singing you had to do for the role?

A. I've never done anything as orchestrated or musically complex in my life. At first, I just made noises. Then I went to London and trained in the studio with Benny [Andersson] and Bjõrn [Ulvaeus] from ABBA. My family let me know that they were very worried for Dad when they first heard Dad sing. But sing I did.

This CD is a must-have just for the simple unadulterated pop culture value. This isn't one of those dramatic instrumental soundtracks with titles like "Wedding March" or "The Emperor is Dead", but instead is a lot of fun, especially for people who have grown up singing every word that ABBA ever wrote.

The eighteen songs (17 + hidden track) are all familiar ABBA hits, and you'll find yourself singing along with the likes of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried and others.

Some of these unlikely songbirds can actually carry a note (albeit not too far), and others will make you smile (You're a brave man Pierce), but there's no denying that this soundtrack would make a great stocking stuffer or just-because gift for your favorite baby boomer.

Tracks not to be missed (whether good or just rather ambitious) are:

"Honey, Honey" Amanda Seyfried

"Mamma Mia!" Meryl Streep

"Dancing Queen" Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters

"Our Last Summer" Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgaard

"Lay All Your Love on Me" Dominic Cooper and Amanda Seyfried

"Super Trouper" Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters

"SOS" Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep

"Does Your Mother Know" Christine Baranski and Philip Michael

"Take a Chance on Me" Julie Walters and Stellan Skarsgaard

"I Have a Dream" / "Thank You for the Music" (Hidden Track) Amanda Seyfried

I LOVED this movie. I saw it six times in the theater and laughed and bobbed my head as much the sixth time as the first. The music great!! Ok, so Pierce Brosnan isn't the best singer in the world. You know what? I've paid a whole lot more money to see people in concert that were suppose to be great singers and were so much worse than Pierce. Besides if you don't want to listen to him just watch him. He's showing some age(but then aren't we all) he's still quite attractive. I think Merryl Streep did an incredible job. Who knew she could sing like that?! And Donna's two friends are a hoot. And I think the girl that plays Sophie is adorable.

In today's times it's great to be able to sit down with a movie and not have to think about it. Just be entertained by it. It's a great "bad day" movie. Go home put your feet up and just veg out. Sure to improve your bad mood greatly!!

I sometimes wonder what movie the critics see because it rarely if ever matched the movie I see. I paid to see this movie five times and took my daughter four of those times, we LOVE it. I makes you feel good, the music gives you energy, to me the movie made me feel young and hopeful. The loctaion it was shot in was breathtaking, the chemisty on screen was wonderful! When it first came out it was not a trailer that grabbed me and I really had no interest in seeing it, but a friend of mine invited me and my daughter to go with her one night, and I am so glad we did. I shudder to think I almost missed one of the best big screen experiences I've ever had.

Would have given this 5 stars without a doubt, except for those missing songs!!! I get REALLY tired of these marketing ploys that victimize customers. Now we all know that, in the near future, there will be an expanded edition of the soundtrack with the deleted songs and maybe some incidental music added as inticement. So ABBA fans, Meryl Streep fans, and fans of musical theater will shell out another 15 20 bucks to buy it. It angers me!!!

Norbit (2007)

NorbitI thought this was a really good funny movie! Eddie Murphy is back doing what he does best! He plays Norbit Rice, and his mistreating obese wife, Rasputia. In the middle of the movie, Norbit's childhood girlfriend, Kate comes back to town, hoping to buy the orphanage that she and Norbit grew up in. Kate's fiance and Rasputia's brothers try to stop Kate so they can open a strip club. Later, Norbit finally gets courage with the help of some friendly pimps, and Mr. Wong to tell Kate the truth and win her love. If you love comedies, and Eddie Murphy, you'll love NORBIT!!!!

Eddie Murphy is a comic actor genius! How many actors can play three different characters and make each character perform perfect in their respective roles??? This movie was a riot. I watched it three times in the same day. I am not an Eddie Murphy fan but this movie proves that he belongs among the greatest comedians in Hollywood's history.

People who compare this role to the role Eddie played in Dreamgirls are silly, these are 2 totally different movies. Norbit is crude humor at it's best, if you are easily offended or looking for a serious drama, don't purchase or rent this movie and the nutty professor, it is not! Eddie plays multiple roles excellently as we know, the film also stars Cuba Goodin Jr.,Thandie Newton and a hilarious cameo from Marlon Wayans, not much substance as far as a plot is concerned , not a love story -just a raunchy, crude performance by Eddie Murphy but hilarious nonetheless and funny is actually and understatement.

I was anticipating this movie. I had seen "Dreamgirls" and was thrilled with Eddie Murphy's performance. I had been hoping for an Eddie Murphy revival for sometime and thought "Norbit" would be the second installment.

Well, this movie did not install correctly. The friend I went with was offended by many of the things this movie had to offer. The main thing to offend me was the ENTIRE thing because it was AWFUL.

What made it A-W-F-U-L? It tried to hard. It included every comedy ingredient and multiplied it by 35. It was too much.

I will add that it had some "sneak me" funny moments, but the film as a whole was not worth the paper my money was printed on.

Beginners (2011)

Beginners(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)There's an emotional acuity to this bittersweet 2011 dramedy that makes the loose structure of the first-person narrative easier to take than one would expect. Director/screenwriter Mike Mills bases his movie on a series of events that occurred in his own life. Just months after Mills' own mother passed away, his 75-year-old father announced that despite their 44-year marriage he was gay and intended to spend his remaining days exploring the hidden side of his libido. Cancer cut short those plans but not the life affirming spirit with which he explored his new lifestyle. It certainly helps that Mills cast 81-year-old Christopher Plummer as the father since his naturally erudite manner complements his character Hal's innately fey quality in a way that makes his late-blooming emotional emancipation all the sweeter. It's a lovely performance well worth remembering during next year's award season.

The protagonist of the story is Oliver, a sensitive cartoonist who is nearing forty and finding himself unable to sustain a lasting relationship. Family dysfunction has taken its toll on Oliver given that he discovers six months after his mother Georgia's death that Hal was in the closet most of Oliver's life, thus explaining why his parents never appeared to connect emotionally. Oliver is obviously concerned a similar fate of repressed feelings will befall him as he rummages through Hal's things after his death. Flashbacks show a childhood dominated by Georgia's eccentric manner with Hal relegated to the shadows of doorways always on his way to another business trip. Meanwhile, closer to the present, Oliver meets a free-spirited French actress named Anna, whose flirtatious manner gives way to her own vulnerability since she has her own family-related challenges in developing romantic connections. Mills intertwines his characters' destinies with the unwieldy nature of life in all its familiarity. There is little one could call pat and predictable in this film.

As Oliver, Ewan McGregor (last seen in the underrated The Ghost Writer) has never come across more comfortably onscreen, making it easy to empathize with his plight without the contrivance of standard Hollywood convention. He has a nice rapport with Mélanie Laurent (she was the vengeful Shosanna Dreyfus in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds), and her beguiling portrayal of Anna reminds me of Natassja Kinski during her early Polanski years. Playing Hal's much-younger lover Andy, Goran Visnjiæ does a surprisingly liberated turn completely submerging any remnants of his ER character, while another TV veteran, Mary Page Keller, brings a nice subversive edge to her performance as Oliver's somewhat hardened mother who had long ago accepted her husband's sexual orientation. This is a movie of small moments and quiet revelations, so it won't suit everyone's attention span, but it is worthwhile viewing for more patient, discriminating viewers.

I went with eagerness to this film. I tend to see many gay-themed movies. This one moved me enormously, and it wasn't the gay character, Christopher Plummer, who most affected me, although he was very, very good. What hit me hard about the movie was Ewan McGregor's deeply sensitive portrayal of a lonely man. This movie is not about how a straight son comes to grips with his gay father who comes out very late in life. It's about a man approaching middle age (McGregor) who realizes he has never really loved. I am rarely (and I mean rarely) been moved to tears in a movie. This was an exception.

Buy Beginners (2011) Now

Beginners is the latest film by independent film auteur Mike Mills and is probably is his most noteworthy film since 2005's Thumbsucker. It stars proven talent such as Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting), Christopher Plummer (The Last Station) and Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds). The film's central plot focuses on Oliver, a slightly disenchanted graphic designer whose father Hal comes out as gay after the death of his mother. Although Oliver takes the news comparatively well, he reflects on his childhood and begins to realize what was behind the silent discord between his two parents. At the same time, he reflects on a dissolved relationship with Anna, a French actress with whom he had a relationship that never bloomed into what he really expected it to.

As an independent film, it takes on the independent credo: All characters, no action. It deals purely with the characters and their interactions with one another. Christopher Plummer emerges as the most interesting in this understated affair. Plummer, who always is in some way likeable whether it be because of his penchant for the linguistic or his fatherly voice qualities, takes on a different role than he's ever played before. His character after his coming out involves himself in the gay nightlife and becomes educated to gay lingo and culture in the 21st Century while getting a young boyfriend with an old man fetish. He even shares a kiss with his younger co-star. The film provides very interesting tidbits in gay history, which are quite informative considering that GLBT studies and history are not taught in school leaving most GLBT people to investigate on their own or to take GLBT studies at certain colleges that offer GLBT course work.

The problem with Beginners is that it moves far too slowly and that the entire subplot between Ewan McGregor and Mélanie Laurent is not very interesting nor seemingly relevant to the more interesting aspects of Christopher Plummer's character. The film would have been better served if the film only explored Plummer's character and McGregor's relationship with him and his mother during his early life. With over 25% of the film devoted to a storyline that isn't interesting and moving too slowly to the more interesting causes the film to lag in too many areas derailing its flow and making the whole thing uneven in its entertainment value. Despite Plummer and the interest in gay history, the film falls short of an independent masterpiece.

When do we stop being our true self-and why? And when, and why, after so many years, do we begin to be our true self again? These questions are asked and answered in Mike Mills' autobiographical film "Beginners."

Oliver Fields (Ewan McGregor;, playing a film variation of Mills himself) is a graphic designer who can't seem to communicate his feelings or maintain a long-term emotional relationship. Oliver, though not verbally expressive or emotionally demonstrative, does express his emotions through graphic design and illustration. The movie flashes back into the past and flashes forward again into the present or more recent past. As we see Oliver's relationship with his parents, we see how he became so emotionally conditioned. His parents endured a distant 45 year marriage, in an environment where emotions and secrets were never revealed. After his mother's (Mary Page Keller) death, his 75 year old father Hal (Christopher Plummer; "Hamlet," "The Sound Of Music", "Inside Man") finally comes out of the closet as a gay man. "And I don't want to be just theoretically gay," he says, "I want to do something about it." And, in the final years of his life, Hal embraces his life with gusto and passion ; becoming an active member of the gay community and having a loving relationship with a much younger man (Goran Visnjig). In the last years of his life, Hal finally begins to be his true self, and Oliver finally begins to know and love the father that he never knew before. In the end, Hal refuses to acknowledge the cancer that will end the life he has just begun to live.

In the present day, inspired by his father's example, Oliver decides to embark upon a relationship with the beguiling and seemingly free-spirited Anna (Melanie Laurent). Interestingly, in a movie filled with characters who can't communicate on one level or another, when Oliver and Anna first meet, she has laringytis and, therefore, cannot speak. Turns out, Anna also has issues concerning her distant father. In a sweet touch, an adorable dog named Arthur serves as the emotional connection between all the characters, past and present, dead or alive, here.

Christopher Plummer's deservedly award-winning performance is a subtle but wonderful revelation. You can see the twinkle in his eyes, you can feel his joy, when he finally embraces his true self. In many ways, Oliver is just as full of child-like wonder and astonishment in his relationship with Anna as his father was when he came out of the closet. I am thrilled that Plummer received awards, but I wish Ewan McGregor's equally heartfelt performance and Mike Mills' beautiful screenplay, had also received the same recognition. But, regardless of awards, "Beginners" is a warm and human film; to be cherished.

BEGINNERS has many nice elements to it, and it is a sweet movie overall. But it is also very uneven and frustrating too.

The essential concept is what interested me (that and the actors) in watching this. A son (Ewan McGregor), well into his thirties and still quite single, has to grapple with the death of his mother, followed closely by the announcement from his father (Christopher Plummer) that he is gay and intends to start enjoying an open, gay lifestyle. And not long after, the father develops cancer and is gone all too soon. I'm not spoiling anything, because we learn all this in the opening moments of the film, which is a series of intertwining flashbacks. One series shows the young boy experiencing his home life growing up with a distant father and a moody, unhappy mother. The other shows him observing how happy and generous and open his father has become once out of the closet. And the last shows his father's last days...when the old man was still warm, funny and open. Finally, mixed in with the flashbacks are scenes of a developing romance between McGregor and Anna, an actress and "free spirit" (Melanie Laurent, so wonderful in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS).

Plummer is fantastic in the film, and the Oscar talk is certainly deserved. When Plummer was younger (back in the SOUND OF MUSIC DAYS)...I don't think he was a very good actor. Stiff and cold. In his old age, he's given some marvelous performances. It's as though he no longer worries about how he looks and just lets himself BE and DO whatever the part calls for. Ironically, even though he's in his `80s, he comes off more virile and passionate now than he ever did 40 years ago. And even though the costume designer thinks all old, gay men wear ridiculous scarf-type thingies...he pulls of his free-wheelin' gay lifestyle with wonderful grace. He is making up for decades of lost time, and boy, does he give it his all, this man. Parties, clubs, boyfriends, and fun. And he finally is able to develop a close relationship with his son. He has the love in his life that he always truly craved, and doesn't have to hold back for anyone.

McGregor handles these scenes very well. He's perplexed by dad, but also moved by his stories of being in the closet and arranging secret rendezvous with other men. He's angry at what his dad put his mom through...but he's also moved by the joy his father now experiences. And he does very well in the scenes with his dad at the end nears.

But the romance scenes with Laurent don't work so well. First of all, Melanie Laurent is a glowing actress, but her English is quite hard to understand. The pillow talk between these two is almost one sided, because I could so seldom understand her whispers. Her character is also quite unbelievable. She's a successful enough actress, apparently, to be put up in a huge luxury suite at a luxury hotel...yet she has lots and lots of time to gallivant around with McGregor, never needing to be on set, apparently, and never being recognized by anyone. She is more of an "idea" from the scriptwriter than a real person. Again, Laurent is not the problem...the fact that English is not her language and the character isn't believable can't be pinned on her. And McGregor seems a bit too misty-eyed in these scenes. He's such a milquetoast! And again, the clothes he's asked to wear (striped shirts dangerously close to Marcel Marceau-land) do NOT help him. One almost wonders if he needs to come out of the closet too. (Not trying to lean on stereotypes, but the thought does occur.)

And worst of all is the character of Andy, as played by Goran Visnjic (once a regular on ER). This is Plummer's steadiest boyfriend, the lover who is there at the end. Visnjic plays him so utterly unconvincingly that I almost cringed to see him. He minces about with such unbridled fervor that it feels like a Benny Hill caricature. The script is no help to him...but he takes what he has to work with it and turns it into utter garbage. I felt sorry for the other actors having to share a sound stage with him.

Overall the film has many very nice moments. It was clearly made with love by writer/director Mike Mills (apparently semi-autobiographical). But what it needed, I think, was more of a critical, dispassionate 2nd opinion from someone not quite so close to the material. Some tightening of the script, better development of the secondary characters (including Laurent's character) and a far better costume designer could easily have turned this from a three-star, soon-to-be-forgotten film into a 4.5 star, memorable exploration of the human heart.

Jeff Who Lives at Home (2013)

Jeff Who Lives at HomeThis was another one of those movies that I missed when it went into theaters, and it was also a film I really wanted to see. I'm a huge fan of Jason Segel's (Jeff) work, so naturally I wanted to see this. However, it was nothing like I expected.

I thought we'd follow Jeff through a point of his life that covered a week, a month, or any set period of time for that matter, but that's not really what happens. We follow Jeff through one crazy day in his life. Which isn't bad, but I feel they could've done more with the character had they expanded the amount of time the movie covered in his life. On top of that the movie is really short, running just over one hour and twenty minutes.

Jeff is a 30 year old stoner who currently lives in his mothers basement. He's recently been infatuated with the movie Signs, and is taking everything that happens to be some sort of sign. Jeff's main goal is to find some sort of greater purpose for himself. He feels lost in today's world, as if there's something he's supposed to find out about himself. During the movie he is helping his brother Pat (Ed Helms) who is also going through a rough patch. Only difference is Pat has a wife, a job, and a life. Even though the movie didn't play out as I expected, I still fell in love with it. Mainly with Jeff. I feel I resemble Jeff a lot in the sense that I too am searching for what my destiny is in life, and until I do I just live life day to day. You see everyone else around you progressing in their lives, and you just feel stuck.

I don't know who did the music to the film, but it was wonderful. It definitely served its purpose in setting the perfect mood for the film. It's very lighthearted and carefree, I hope I can find the score somewhere.

The only thing I can really complain about aside from the length is how it was filmed. If you've ever watched an episode of the Office, that's the best thing to compare it to. The camera is kind of shaky and it zooms in and out on the character a few times in each shot. It doesn't make it unwatchable, but that kind of filming isn't for everyone.

Overall Score: 8/10 Even though it didn't turn out as I expected, I still highly recommend this film. If you're into those weird comedy films that don't necessarily try to be comedies, then you will enjoy this. Overall it's a beautiful movie, and Jason Segel does an amazing job as Jeff. I can't picture anyone else playing him.

When I read the description and reviews of this movie, I was expecting a somewhat average movie one worth watching once, and then probably forgetting shortly afterward. What a surprise!

The movie was engaging from start to finish. I loved the realism, the "presence" of the scenes, the slow but deliberate unfolding of the plot, and the strong acting, especially that of Ed Helms.

By the time the movie was almost over, I realized it was special and that I needed to purchase a copy of it. Then, as an added bonus, the ending was completely unexpected and incredibly powerful.

I rented this, but I will definitely be purchasing a copy of it very soon. This is one to watch over and over.
