Bad Boys (1995)

Bad BoysWhat can I say about this movie, but the fact that Bad boys is one of my all time favourite films. It stars Will Smith (the Frensh Prince of Bell Air) and Martin Lawerance (Martain/Blue Streak) as two Miami cops, both are two very funny actors who took to the action role very well (of course Will Smith as continued on so in this role in films like ID4 and Men in black). The film produces great action and boasting good soundtrack(songs such as Shy guy) from the talents of a great director(This film really started Michael Bay's carear and is still one of his best).I know its not everyones cup of tea, but if you like your movies fast, sexy, loud and action packed buy the DVD now! This special edition had loads of extras.

When it comes to action films there is one man that has come to be known as Hollywood's go-to-guy when producing high-octane action/adventure fare. That man is Jerry Bruckheimer, "Top Gun", "Days of Thunder", and "Con Air" are just a few of the outstanding action films Bruckheimer has produced throughout the last 20 years. In 1995, Bruckheimer teamed up with director Michael Bay to make a film that focuses on two hip, young cops in Miami, Florida. To bring the freshness needed for the roles of Detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, Bay and Bruckheimer looked to the talents of two popular young actors made famous by two very big television shows. The actors chosen were Will Smith (TV's "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air") and Martin Lawrence (TV's "Martin").

"Bad Boys" story as stated above, focuses on two Miami Detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence), who after confiscating one hundred million dollars worth of heroine come under fire when the drugs wind up stolen. With the drugs missing, the two lead detectives under investigation by Internal Affairs, it appears that this particular narcotics division of the Miami Police Department will be closed down for good. So, with no one on their side except for a young woman (Tea Leoni) who happened to witness a murder linked to the drugs, Mike and Marcus must strike out on their own to reaquire the drugs and bring down those responsible, if they succeed they can clear their names and keep their badges for another day, but if not it may just mean jail for the detectives.

Many critics were skeptical about whether or not two actors famous for doing comedy on network television shows could pull of being the leads in a high-profile action movie. Really many actors would probably have the problem with making the jump from TV to film, especially when their primary job had been comedy, with very little drama and no action, but Will Smith and Martin Lawrence succeed brilliantly. The comedic timing between these two actors is outstanding, and both pull off the dramatic scenes very convincingly, and the action scenes are well played and laid out thanks to the adrenaline charged directing of Michael Bay and the athletic prowess of the actors. Jerry Bruckheimer's skill for picking projects and finding the right people to make them come together seems to never fail, and "Bad Boys" is no exception.

If you're a fan of action films and for some reason have yet to see "Bad Boys", do yourself a favor and watch this movie, your satisfaction is guaranteed.

"Bad Boys" is rated R for violence, language, and sexuality.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay make an excellent team! When they work together, explosions rock the screen, profanity is spewed between characters, and corpses far outnumber the amount of lines spoken. This is one of Will Smith's early ventures in film, and to be honest, I think this is his breakthrough role as Mike Lowrey, a playboy cop with a taste for gritty gunfights. Martin Lawrence is hilarious as Mike's partner, Marcus Burnett, a family man whose gig constantly interferes with his family life. Tea Leoni is okay, but not great, and her role seems a bit weird, as though it was just randomly stuck in the plot. The bad guy is a typical villain, with few lines and a thick accent. The action scenes are, of course, Bruckheimer-worthy, and so you wont be disappointed. The cinematography adds to the film's good parts. Overall, a movie that is fun, brainless stuff.

In 1995, director Michael Bay made his directorial debut with "Bad Boys". Featuring a story by George Gallo and a screenplay by late show writers Michael Barrie, Jim Mulholland and Doug Richardson ("Die Hard II", "Money Train") and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, despite being shot on a very low budget ($19 million), the film was a huge box office success making over $141 million in the box office .

"Bad Boys" would further the onscreen status of then-television show leads Will Smith and Martin Lawrence into movie stardom and would solidify Michael Bay's status as an action director.

VIDEO:

"Bad Boys" is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1). For the most part, the Blu-ray release definitely marks a much better looking version of the film. You can see the skin pores on the characters, more detail in the characters as you can see the freckles on Tea Leoni's face much more clearly. Blacks are nice and deep. Outdoor scenes are vibrant and colorful and for the most part, for a 15-year-old film, fans of the film will definitely enjoy the PQ. I didn't see any aliasing, edge enhancement or any artifacting.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

"Bad Boys" shines in the lossless department. With this film being an action-driven film, there are times where you hear explosions and gun shots whizzing from left to right via the surround channels. I also noticed some shots utilizing LFE. But there was one scene where I felt it nearly blew my eardrum off because I had my system pumped up quite loudly. But the film definitely sounds incredible via lossless. Dialogue and music is clear and understandable through the front and center channels but there is good use of surround for the action segments.

Subtitles are in English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"Bad Boys" comes with the following special features presented in standard definition, English Stereo with Spanish or Portuguese subtitles:

* movieIQ(tm)+sync (use logo) and BD-Live connect you to real-time information on the cast, music, trivia and more while watching the movie!

* Commentary with Director Michael Bay Featured on the original DVD release, Michael Bay talks about the making of the film, working with the talent and the crew and how certain scenes were created. Also, talking about his directorial debut, the two main characters inprovising and working with a low budget.

* Putting the Boom & Bang in the Bad Boys Documentary (23:54) A documentary on how the special effects were created for the film, the various weapons and how certain explosions were made.

* Three Music Videos Featuring Dana King's "Shy Guy", 69 Boyz "Five-O, Five-O" and Warren G's "So Many Ways".

EXTRAS:

"Bad Boys" comes with a cardboard protective slip case.

JUDGMENT CALL:

When "Bad Boys" came out in theaters in 1995, there were many critics who were not too thrilled by the film but the fact is that Martin Lawrence who had his own popular TV series "Martin" and Will Smith who had "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" were popular talents. Some may find the partnership between the two as just another cliche cop duo film and for the most part, I guess you can see it at that way but if you were a fan of these two, you were going to enjoy their interaction and their humor. And possible the smartest thing that Bay allowed (because he didn't like the script all that much) was to give Lawrence and Smith a chance to improvise their lines and have fun with it.

But if anything, "Bad Boys" was that film that lifted director Michael Bay and Will Smith's names to new heights. After this film, Will Smith was no longer the TV star but now a bonafide action star and followed up with "Independence Day" and "Men in Black", while Director Michael Bay would have a string of box office hits with "The Rock" and "Armageddon".

If this film proved anything, it was that Michael Bay knew what staff to work with because with such a low budget to work with, they accomplished a lot special effects-wise with very little (note: "Bad Boys" was budgeted at $19 million, Bay's next film "The Rock" was budgeted at $75 million).

"Bad Boys" was like your usual copy duo films. May it be "Lethal Weapon, "Beverly Hills Cop", "48 Hours" (two friends/partners who have their own problems with one another) but when you have two African American talent who can play off each other so well, it made the film very entertaining. The comedy and action was just right and I understand the critics feeling the film doesn't break any new ground but in 1995, I felt the timing was right for the film and for the most part, movie watchers agreed with the pairing as seen with the massive amount of money that "Bad Boys" had made.

As for the Blu-ray release, the Blu-ray definitely looks much better than the DVD and the lossless soundtrack is awesome. But if there is one thing where the special DVD slightly has an edge over the Blu-ray edition is that it does have the "Damage Control" which used angles to analyze special effects explosions and also an isolated music score which are not included on the Blu-ray. So, if you enjoy those special features, you may want to hang on to your special edition DVD version. But otherwise, the Blu-ray release of "Bad Boys" is much better than its DVD counterpart.

Overall, if you are a fan of "Bad Boys", definitely give this Blu-ray release a chance!

This movie is very fun and full of action. If you can get past the cursing, it's well worth it. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are almost too much fun as cop partners who go deep undercover to recover stolen police evidence (drugs). Tea Leoni is also hilarious in the film and serves as a great counterpoint to the cocky buddy cops.

Dabangg Bollywood Blu Ray With English Subtitles (2010)

Dabangg Bollywood Blu Ray With English SubtitlesLarger than life and vastly entertaining, DABANGG (meaning "Fearless") shattered the box office record in India, and now 3 IDIOTS, the previous record-holder, is all pouty. DABANGG's success hinges mostly on star Salman Khan's drawing power, but you can't front on the highly stylized action sequences, the polished cinematography, the sizzling musical numbers, and the cinematic debut of the gorgeous Sonakshi Sinha. The film boasts a masala of derivative plot points, but this is one of those cases in which the flashy bells and whistles work hard to compensate for the lack of narrative substance. Salman Khan is a friggin' rock star, man.

DABANGG takes place in the sprawling northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a place that turns out to be a hotbed of combustible politics and police corruption. Salman Khan plays Police Inspector Chulbul Pandey, a character whom on the surface isn't unsimilar to his role in Wanted (Bollywood Movie). Chulbul Pandey, an unrepentant crooked cop, stalks his world with an unmatched swagger and a p0rn mustache. And he is the film's hero. Raised in strained family dynamics, Chulbul resents his indifferent step-father and useless step-brother, and this has surely affected how he sees the world and his sense of ethics. His mother serves as his only anchor. It's left up to you to determine whether he gains a measure of redemption. Me, I don't think he mends his ways all that much.

Do you appreciate or feel distaste for take charge men? Men who assume they know what's best for you? My eyebrows were consistently raised at Chulbul's rather perfunctory courtship of the beautiful pottery girl Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha). But I guess some girls dig that approach. Not that Chulbul doesn't melt at certain stages of his wooing. He is obviously very smitten with Rajo. To observe that tired old cliche, he's a better man for it. It makes him aware of the importance of salvaging his estranged family.

But all the soap opera hand-wringing feels obligatory, something to tide us over until we get to the bits that we actually came to the theater for: which is force of nature Salman Khan kicking tail with panache. With invisibly rendered wires lending him unearthly grace and athleticism, Salman Khan takes out armed goons in several electrifyingly staged action sequences: in a warehouse during a bust, and during a rooftop shoot-out, and on a train platform as assassins spring out of the woodwork. However, I do sense a whiff of plagiarism. I recall having seen some of the action flourishes in earlier films (the firehose routine is from ROMEO MUST DIE; the window slamming shut just as the thug is jumping thru it is from DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM). I probably missed other bits. I'll say this, even if "inspired" by other films, the stunts and fighty fights are stunning stuff.

But this is Bollywood, right? DABANGG follows that successful blueprint. It is action-packed, exaggerated, boisterous, lushly romantic, and so vibrant. It is unashamedly all of those things. The sleek production values suggest an impressive movie budget. I appreciate Salman Khan's having a sense of humor about himself. He willingly spoofs his action hero image. I love his ring tone dance. It makes his "hero" cop more likable. But you merely have to check out his performance in the amazing title song "Hud Dabangg" to realize why he's had such longevity. Salman Khan exudes charisma. Hours after watching DABANGG I'm still going around, jerking my belt buckle this way and that. As if that could make me fearless.

This two-disc set offers the film presentation with optional English sub-titles and includes the following bonus featurettes (but without English sub-titles): "The Making of DABANGG" (00:40:53 minutes long) and "The Making of the Songs" (00:27:07 minutes long).

Dabangg is in my top three of all-time favorite Hindi movies. It's Salman Khan's show all the way, but so many other elements of the film are wonderful as well. The technicolor opening credits let you know that this film is not going to take itself entirely seriously, which is confirmed when, in the middle of one of the opening action sequences, Salman breaks into a hilarious little dance to the tune of a mobile ringtone.

The film centers on Chulbul Pandey, a sometimes-corrupt, sometimes-noble, but always hilarious and kick-ass cop in a dusty, provincial town. The film could easily have been titled "The Adventures of Chulbul Pandey": Pandey-ji makes enemies with corrupt politicians; Pandey-ji fights with his brother; Pandey-ji navigates falling head-over-heels in love with the town beauty.

Salman Khan's characterization of Chulbul Pandey is pitch-perfect; he's both vicious and vulnerable. And it has introduced a whole new set of trademark moves into the canon of Salman-the-superstar: the belt-buckle swagger, sunglasses hooked over the back of his shirt-collar, and wildly drunken dancing. The filmmakers found a perfect match in newcomer Sonakshi Sinha, who plays the female lead with sensitivity and understatement (in addition to which, she's stunning). Sonakshi and Salman look wonderful paired together.

The songs oh, the songs! The opening number, "Dabangg", is rhythmic and throbbing with simple yet highly effective choreography. The romantic "Tere Mast Do Nain" will have you falling in love and laughing at the same time. The supporting cast is excellent, from Arbaaz Khan as the slightly smarmy but not entirely bad brother (and Salman's real-life brother), to the sympathetic performance of Dimple Kapadia as the mother.

In short, this film is everything a Hindi entertainer should be. Watch it.

Certain holidays in India belong to stars that choose to release their movies on those days and ensuring they become a hit. Aamir Khan ahs released his last two films on Decemeber 25th i.e Ghajini and 3 Idiots. Salman had his last hit released on Eid i.e. Wanted and this year he seems to have secured Eid as his day of release with Dabanng.

Hell bent on shattering records it has earned in two weeks what Ghajini did over its entire lifetime, Dabanng is the flavor of the season, like an old wine in a new bottle. In a gist the story is of two step brothers Salman ( Chulbul Pandey ) and Arbaaz Khan ( Makhichand Panday ) harbor small time resentment towards each other when a serious event turns in to deadly enmity. The movie is essentially driven by treatment of the subject and by witty dialogue and some superb fight sequences especially in the opening scene, the railway station and in the climax. The music is also great with some exceptional tracks including the title track and has been filmed extremely well. I was disappointed in the item number by Malaika Arora because I thought she did not exude the necessary raunchiness that the song required. There are also several character artistes but they are hardly there, Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar , Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna are wasted. Sonakshi Sinha sparkles and oozes freshness in every scene, the camera makes her look radiant from all angles. The movie right from the opening scenes till the end belongs to Salman Khan, who displays his star power by transforming himself completely in the role of Chulbul Robinhood Panday. This is Salman like you have never seen before, I think he is the sole reason that the movie worked. He shines through the film and will be remembered for this for a long time to come. This is a ground breaking film for him, he finds himself and delivers entertainment that will find new fans and loyalists to love him even more. Last year he gave us Wanted and this year Dabanng with the ending lines suggesting a sequel. Go and watch this one for pure entertainment and paisa vasooli......4 stars 9/23/10

If there was to be just one pop-culture character with 'franchise' written all over it, it would be Ace Ventura. After the sleeper hit that was the original, Ace is shipped off to Africa, via Tibet, to find the missing sacred animal of the peaceful Wachati tribe. It is supposed to be a wedding gift to the savage Wachutu tribe, marking the congregation of their people.

Ace is the best there is (the only there is) surely sending him to find the sacred bat (his most hated creature) is the 'right' thing to do. No matter how crazy he is. And how crazy indeed! This time around Jim Carrey goes completely wild as Ace. Any trace of an actual human that we saw before is surrendered to complete insanity. You can tell that Carrey is having the time of his life just ad-libbing and winging it. You can almost hear director Steve Oedekerk struggle to contain his laughter off-camera. There are even a few moments when Carrey himself almost cracks-up.

I prefer the sequel to the first for a few reasons. First of all the production design is far superior and the faux-African jungle (actually South Carolina) and tribal village colors really come alive. The widescreen photography gives the film a more expansive look than Tom Shadyac's original. Plus, it has a lot more animals, which I think is cool. You gotta love the 'alrighty then' meditation scene too.

Beside's the animated show (a few episodes are featured on this DVD set), there's been no more of Ace Ventura since. But don't rule him out. Carrey may be sick of being regarded as the guy who once made his anus talk, but I can only hope he'll do a third one day.

Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy (2007)

Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy(I have a feeling all reviews for this DVD is going to have at least one "fluffy" reference...)

Gabriel Iglesias is absolutely hysterical on this DVD! His CD Pikachu I See You is great and his Comedy Central appearances are always terrific and this DVD is no exception. His stories, his voices & impressions and just generally outrageous and still totally adorable delivery makes this DVD a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes to laugh!!!

I can't wait to see him live later this year. I'm a big fan of his, and this made me like him even more. The end joke about the two "hoochies" following his car and then both of the cars getting pulled over. The punchline was priceless. I sure hope he doesn't get too political with his comedy, but it was a 5 star stand up. If anyone wants to know, there's some jokes that get repeated but other than that, it's pretty much new material. Which is a good thing with an uprising comic. Check it out folks!

How my ratings work:

5 I really liked/loved it

4 I liked it

3 Could've been better/worth a look

2 Just didn't live up to the potential

1 Simply awful

Gabriel Iglesias is one funny dude. He has a lot of energy for a fluffy guy. I remember him when he was on the Nickelodeon show All That and he was funny on there. I didn't see anything of him for a couple years until I saw him on Comedy Central Presents (which was awesome). This routine is even better, partly because it's longer than the last one, and because it's got funnier stuff. He's great with impersonations, goofy voices, and sound effects. I hope to see more of him in the future, both in stand up and movies.

Gabriel Iglesias is overweight. If you've never seen him perform before it will be the first thing you notice. I showed this DVD to some friends of mine and when they first saw Gabriel come out on stage they couldn't believe how big he was. In fact, they focused on it so much I didn't think they were going to give him a chance. Well, less than 5 minutes in we were all laughing uncontrollably. You almost forget about his size even when his material is about his weight. His talent for comedy far outweighs his number of lbs. When I watch standup comedy I look for three things. Materiel, storytelling, and sound effects. There are a lot of successful comedians out there and most only have one of these talents. Gabriel has great material, his storytelling is some of the best I've heard (especially when telling the stories about when he's dealing with the cops), and his sound effects are also top notch (love the police siren and motor vehicles). Heck he even does great impressions from presidents, to a state trooper from the south, to an elderly Korean woman. Bottom line is that it's a great DVD from a great standup comedian who will hopefully be doing comedy for many years to come.

A friend told me to watch his show on Comedy Central. Gabriel Iglesias is HILARIOUS. He does excellent sound effects. Like many great comedians he talk about things that happen in his life and he's not afraid to laugh at himself. Would love to see one of his live shows one day.

The English Teacher (2013)

The English TeacherI give this movie 3.5 stars.

The good:

Julianne Moore plays the awkward teacher perfectly

Never boring

Some funny moments

Cute ending (altho predictable)

The bad:

NONE of the characters are likeable

A major lack of character development

Even with the flaws, I cannot help but like this movie. Would I recommend it? Yes.

Wanted to like this movie more as I was looking for a strong comedy to lighten up a boring Saturday. Nathan Lane did not disappoint, and Julienne Moore was great as always. Just wasn't over the top funny.

The writers ruined a perfectly good opportunity to tell a story of a talented playwright who just needed a chance to stage his work.

This movie features the kind of lying that injures friendship, destroys family relationships, and induces despair. It portrays a bullying atmosphere in a school, with buffoons for teachers, buffoons for kids, buffoons for parents.

How this miserable, hillbilly saga got off the ground is a testimony to Hollywood's conviction that America is a sick, soiled society. And the actors should be ashamed for not having the moral fabric to KNOW what a bummer of a B movie they were agreeing to act in. Disgusting. Made my flesh creep.
