Bad Teacher (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2011)

Bad TeacherA reluctant teacher loses her wealthy fiancé' and thus has to return to the job she hates. Desiring breast implants, she pursues the bonus awarded to the teacher whose class has the highest test scores. Along the way she is pursed by a gym teacher, tries to connect with a rich substitute, and finds a rival in a fellow teacher, the funniest and most well-developed character in the film. This is a movie that I found funny and refreshing, in that it is not laced with vulgarities and profanity throughout. This is a movie that provides laughs while not seeking the lowest common denominator. A pleasant surprise.

BAD TEACHER is a mixed bag. [Possible SPOILERS AHEAD]

It features a talented cast, particularly the always-deft Cameron Diaz, that certainly know how to play comedy, and it contains several laugh-out-loud moments, but the film is, ultimately, defeated by its very premise.

There is not one likable character in the entire film.

Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey, a ruthless, wildly inappropriate middle school teacher who doesn't give a damn about her students or colleagues, and "teaches" by showing her class movies while she sleeps off the previous night's drunk.

Why wasn't this woman was fired months ago?

After her wealthy fiancé and his mother dump her, Elizabeth is out to snag another rich husband and she sets her sights on a new substitute teacher (Justin Timberlake) who comes from money. Unfortunately for her, Justin is more attracted to Elizabeth's chief rival (Lucy Punch), a triangle that leads to a "war" between the two women...neither of which we, as an audience, are rooting for.

Certainly there are moments in this picture that one cannot help but laugh at Elizabeth's outrageous remarks, but these awkward laughs are akin to the somewhat incredulous guffaws we give Larry David and his inappropriate actions on CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.

Elizabeth may "soften" late in the picture, but she certainly doesn't change and nothing in the screenplay by Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg really justifies her "winning" at the film's end.

Phyllis Smith, John Michael Higgins and Jason Segel co-star in the movie, directed by Jake Kasdan.

Extras on the DVD, which contains both the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie, include deleted scenes, outtakes and two "Behind the Scenes" featurettes.

First off, a teacher smoking pot is not funny. It just.... isn't. I know it was meant to get one of the film's biggest laughs. But it's just.... not funny.

And secondly, I love raunchy movies as much as the next guy. Knocked Up and The Hangover are two of my favs. But this movie is far from that, it's just mean spirited. Cameron Diaz plays plays a very unlikeable lead. In short, she is a home wrecker, a liar, and a blackmailer.

Her pessimism towards a little boy is particularly unsettling. She shatters the hopes and dreams of one of her 6th grade students by telling him that he will never be able to get a girl to like him, because he isn't good enough. That is easily the low point of the film. And she also ruins the life and career of another teacher, by framing her for something she didn't do. Which again is not funny, it's just plain horrible.

The overall "moral" of the movie is that it does not matter matter if you have big boobs or not. You can get everything you want by being a nasty, manipulating, gold-digging whore.

There is no way possible way to spoil anything because the movie spoils itself within the first ten minutes. It is saturated with negativity, and tasteless humor.

Bad Teacher gives off an overall bad vibe, sends a horrible message, and delivers very few laughs. If you are looking for a just desserts film where the underdog triumphs, and the bad teacher learns from her mistakes, you wont find it here. This is not a movie I want to see again.

I really, really wanted to like this film even a little bit as I paid top dollar to see it in the theater, but it was so 'bad' that I felt compelled to warn off others. "Bad Teacher" is simply one of those films that could have been better, but because it was so bad, it would be tough to know where to start fixing it.

Cameron Diaz plays a character with no depth (not surprising or even a negative for this genre of films...), no like-ability and yes, she's a bad teacher too thus the name of the film. Supporting cast including Justin Timberlake as a cute, rich, but nerdy co-teacher, are good enough, but you keep hoping for better and never get it. The story too is so simple, it really doesn't allow any of the characters to be built into much more than sketches of ideas versus characters you want to either loathe or cheer for in the end.

One scene where Diaz's character redeems herself is cute, but the film neither offered up enough of those moments or really funny ones to make this viewer even slightly happy. I stuck it out and watched the whole thing, but while a fan of stupid comedies and the actors in the film, if this was the only choice I had for something to watch I'd read a book.

SO, I have seen plenty of movies and even the worst ones have some redeeming values...but not this one! This is above and beyond the WORST movie I have ever seen! Surprising too, because based on the cast, I was expecting this movie to be a lot better. The story is terribly written, really trashy and the acting is not much better. To be honest, I am not a prude(I mean Caddyshack is my fav movie of all time), but to me, this movie was vulgar in a way that was not even funny.

The only actors who made this movie watchable were Jason Segel and Lucy Punch who actually delivered some funny lines. I was so happy once this movie was over, that I did not have to watch one more second of it. If you like comedy and good movies, you're gonna be sorely disappointed by this stinker!

Off Limits (1953)

Off LimitsWally Hogan: "Connie, it may not show but I'm yellow."

Connie Curtis: "It shows."

You'd think Bob Hope would've learned his lesson, having already gotten snookered in CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT. Here he gets bullied into enlisting in the U.S. Army again. Alternately (and more drably) titled as MILITARY POLICEMEN, OFF LIMITS is one of old Ski Nose's lesser known films. But it's got some good laughs, a song or two, and the sole teaming up of Bob Hope and Mickey Rooney on the big screen. On one hand, Mickey Rooney is no Bing Crosby. But, on the other hand, Bob Hope is no Judy Garland.

1953's OFF LIMITS is a minor hybrid boxing / military comedy; it finds Bob Hope at his most relaxed and Rooney back to his wholesome next-door-neighbor kid routine, kind of like as if Andy Hardy had enlisted. Bob Hope plays Wally Hogan, a womanizing boxing trainer who follows his champion prize fighter into the U.S. Army. But Wally is left holding the bag when his boxer is discharged on psychological waivers. Assigned to the Army's military police, Wally sort of by accident takes under his wing an enlisted private, Herbert Tuttle (Rooney). When you learn that Tuttle is also a lightweight amateur boxer looking for a trainer, well, it's not hard to connect the dots.

In this onscreen pairing, Mickey Rooney doesn't give as good as he gets, and partly this is ascribed to the two leads' differing approach. Rooney tends to roll with a more wholesome comedic style. Hope plays up his patented wiseacre screen image: conniving, smirky and launching a fast and furious barrage of one-liners, and his is the presence that looms larger, in more ways than one. Fact is, Hope's character probably wouldn't have given the time of day to an aw-shucks guy like Herbert Tuttle if it weren't for Tuttle's lovely aunt Connie Curtis (Marilyn Maxwell).

It's hard to take Hope and Rooney seriously as law-enforcing servicemen as they tool around town in their lumpy physiques, even though, in their song duet, they boast that a military policeman is "the only man in the world who can tell the U.S. Army where to go." But it's not really their credibility as MPs that counts. What matters are the gags they come up with, and are they funny enough? And, yeah, there's some funny stuff here, and director George Marshall keeps things moving. It's inevitable that Mickey Rooney ends up in the ring fighting Hope's former champion. But before that, we're treated to a song or two, Hope's hoofing on the piano and his wolf tactics on Marilyn Maxwell. That rivalry between the MPs and the Navy's Shore Patrol is dusted off. We chart Hope and Rooney's antics as, after a miserable start, they try to legitimize Rooney as a pugilist to make the Army proud.

Highlights for me, off the top of my head, are the brief shot of the bouncing jeep tossing Hope around like a rag doll, Rooney's crazed session on the heavy bag during the train ride, and the brawl in the club initiated by Marilyn Maxwell, and when stopped, initiated by her again. Legendary boxer Jack Dempsey cameos as a referee. Bing Crosby cameos as static. Mickey Rooney was in his early 30s when he took on this role, and he does look a bit too old to pass for a fresh-faced kid. But he certainly looks more believable with his boxing than does Bob Hope. Not that Rooney was the second coming of Sugar Ray Robinson, mind you.

I'm rating this film 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a nice minor comedy, but, ultimately, OFF LIMITS doesn't rank up there with Hope's most memorable movies. It's still worth a look. And at least Phyllis Diller isn't in it.

Bob Hope plays Wally, trainer for a boxing champ. When the champ is called in for his enlistment into the Army, Wally follows him to protect his interest in the champ. The problem is the Army rejects the champ because he failed the psych exam. Wally's real trouble begins when the Army accepts him and the champ goes off with his handlers, who are actually mobsters.

Enter Mickey Rooney (Herbie Tuttle), a wannabe prizefighter who wants Wally to train him while they are in the Army together. Trouble is Wally wants out of the Army so that he can resume his fast-living lifestyle as a boxing trainer, until he meets Herbert's aunt Connie (Marilyn Maxwell). Connie does not think much of Wally and she does not like boxing.

So to not give away the rest of the plot I will leave here.

Great comedic movie! Well worth watching over and over. It would be a better price value if Amazon would lower the price about $5-$10.

I enjoy Hope's sense of humor. This may not be one of his best but it's close. The story is simple, Hope gets himself in trouble but prevails in the end. If you like uncomplicated humor you'll like this.

This is a Bob Hope movie that features a bit part by Charles Bronson. THat's why I bought the movie. This movie had a rather grainy appearance when I watched it and I actually found a better copy somewhere else. So pay attention to the film company that produced the tape. Some do a better job than others. I do believe that this film is out of print and unless you record the movie from TCM or other similar classic movie channel, you'll have to settle for VHS.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Dazed and ConfusedI love this movie. It's one of my favorite teen comedies. It helped jump start the careers of the film's soon-to-be stars, such as: Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Matthew McConaughey, Rory Cochrane, Jason London, and Milla Jovovich, to name a few. By the end of my first viewing, I was hooked. I became obsessed with the movie, and have seen it so many times that I've lost count, and it's still fresh and hilarious with every viewing (which is rare for a film)! It has become one of my favorite movies of all time, as well.

It doesn't necessarily have a plot, it's basically about the last day of school at a high school in a small town in Texas in 1976. The soon-to-be seniors are initiating the soon-to-be freshmen, A few friends are trying to get Aerosmith tickets, and everyone is trying to party or get stoned, drunk, or laid. Oh yeah. Dazed and Confused is definitely a cult classic, and a movie I could watch easily over a million times. Even though it's about the END of the school year, it's still fun to watch whenever. Oh, and Slater is my favorite character by far. The soundtrack is AWESOME as well, featuring songs by: Aerosmith, Foghat, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, War, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, KISS, Steve Miller Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

This is, hands down, one of the greatest teen movies ever made. People who grew up in the 70's claim this movie captures the time perfectly (just read some of the reviews here!), and this movie is definitely a must see. It'll make every young viewer wish they were there partying and having a good time, and every adult remember the good times they had during their teenage years. So, if you're looking for an entertaining flick to watch or want a flick that you AND your buddies will enjoy, check out "Dazed and Confused".

And for those who are angry that another DVD release of this film is out, you should just give your old D&C DVDs away and grab this one. In fact, Universal are the ones who SCREWED us, the fans, with their lackluster efforts for BOTH of the DVDs they've released (the barebones edition and the Flashback edition). Sure they REMASTERED the film for the Flashback edition, but there could've been so much more on THAT edition. Linklater was supposively going to record a commentary for the Flashback edition, but he didn't meet Universal's deadline, so they decided to release the DVD without the Making Dazed 10th anniversary documentary AND Linklater's commentary, hence, he was disappointed with the Flashback edition DVD, and Criterion gave Linklater enough freedom to put all of the bonus features he wanted on a "Dazed" DVD. They even allowed him and cinematographer Lee Daniel to supervise the high definition transfer of the film that will be used on the Criterion DVD. However, the HD transfer will be down converted to DVD resolution for the DVD release. It's impossible for the standard DVD format to reach the resolution of High Definition, although DVDs (especially now) can look very good.

Special features include the following:

* All new high-definition digital transfer, supervised by Richard Linklater and cinematographer Lee Daniel

* Audio commentary by Linklater

* "Making Dazed," a 50-minute documentary by filmmaker Kahane Corn

* Booklet featuring new essays by film critic Kent Jones, music critic Jim DeRogatis, and author Chuck Klosterman, plus character profiles, and memories of the film from cast and crew

* More than two hours of rare on-set interviews and behind-the-scenes footage featuring cast and crew

* Footage from the 10-year anniversary celebration

* Audition footage

* Deleted Scenes

* Original trailer

* Collectible film poster

Fans of this movie have had to suffer two bare bones editions before finally being richly rewarded with this new special edition from the fine folks at the Criterion Collection.

The first disc features an audio commentary by writer/director Richard Linklater who is clearly still bitter about how the studio screwed him over and mentions it frequently. He talks at length about which parts of the film are autobiographical in his usual, easygoing, genial way, delivering yet another top notch track filled with great anecdotes, smart observations and cautionary tales about the dangers of working with a Hollywood studio.

Also included are 17 deleted scenes, including footage of Pink and his friends stealing the statues that we see later on in the film painted as the band members from Kiss.

There is also a theatrical trailer.

The second disc kicks off with an impressive, 50 minute retrospective documentary entitled "Making Dazed" that combines behind-the-scenes footage from 1992 with the ten-year cast and crew reunion with more recent interviews as well. This is a fascinating look at the challenges that Linklater faced on his first studio movie.

"Auditions" features footage of 12 cast members reading for the film. It is pretty easy to see why they were cast as they slip into character quite naturally especially someone like Rory Cochrane who eerily becomes Slater or Nicky Katt who effortlessly embodies his redneck bully.

"Beer Bust at the Moon Tower" features cast members being interviewed in character during the first week of rehearsal in an effort to get them familiar with their roles. Also included are cast interviews that look like they were done early on in production or during filming. Highlights include an amusing and candid clip of Wiggins and Christine Harnos before their kissing scene in the movie. There is also quite a bit of behind-the-scenes footage that was seen only briefly in "Making Dazed."

Finally, there is an impressive 72-page booklet with essays and interviews. And to top it all off a fold out movie poster is included as well.

"Dazed and Confused" represents one of the better entries in the film genre fans affectionately refer to as the stoner picture. After viewing this movie, I started thinking about this much maligned cinematic rubric. How many films, I wondered, fall within this category? Well, there are the Cheech and Chong movies that emerged in the 1970s, a series of films that really deserve their own special niche. What else? "The Stoned Age" came out one year after "Dazed and Confused" arrived on the scene. There are probably many more that I could not recall, but the mother of all stoner films has to be the amazing "Over the Edge," a movie notable for showcasing Matt Dillon in his first film roll, but also because of its gritty '70s feel and its wonderful fusion of youthful alienation with suburban sprawl. "Over the Edge," sadly unavailable on DVD as of this date, should serve as the standard by which viewers should measure all other stoner films. In that respect, "Dazed and Confused," while suffering a few problems, does a nice job of keeping the tradition alive.

Set in a small Texas town in the 1970s, "Dazed and Confused" follows the various misadventures of a group of high school students on the last day of school, covering a period of mere hours from the end of the school day to the obligatory beer bash held that evening. The cast of characters here is huge, ranging from a small band of junior high students about to become freshman to high school juniors about to become seniors. There's Randall "Pink" Floyd (Jason London), the high school football star who is having some doubts about signing a team pledge to refrain from drugs and alcohol during his senior year. Several of his buddies, including Fred O'Bannion (Ben Affleck) and the team coach, give him grief about his hesitancy to give in to this blatant attempt at control. In the meantime, the gang of jocks and their female counterparts take great joy in engaging in the time-honored ritual of hazing the incoming freshman class. This activity involves chasing the hapless kiddies around town in automobiles in order to administer a rather vicious beating with a stout wooden paddle. One of these new freshmen, Mitch Kramer (Wiley Wiggins) attempts to avoid the inevitable until some seniors catch him after one of his baseball games. Floating on the periphery of these scenes is a trio of eggheads (played by Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, and Marissa Ribisi) and an aging stoner, David Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey), who cannot let go of his high school years.

The scenes in "Dazed and Confused" unfold in a chaotic manner, perhaps in an effort to mirror the randomness of American youth during the 1970s. A planned party at the house of a kid whose parents are going on vacation comes to naught when a delivery truck attempts to deliver a keg as the shocked adults look on. With this party effectively put on ice, the search is on for a new place to toss back a few cold ones. Most of the kids spend a lot of time driving around town, always on the lookout for some action. After receiving his beating, Mitch Kramer discovers a newfound friendship with Randall Floyd, who invites the diminutive frosh to accompany him on an excursion to the local hangout. Meanwhile, the three brainiacs cruise around town throwing out the most hilarious observations about their future and the state of the country (my favorite line equates Gerald Ford's football injuries with the state of the economy). The kegger contains the things those who went to these atrocities in high school would expect: someone gets in a fight, new relationships form and dissolve, and the stoner archetype goes off on a rant about drugs. The movie ends with no concrete answers about where these kids will go or what the future holds for them.

The movie is notable not for its party hard theme, although that certainly plays a big role here, but for its introspective mood. Director Richard Linklater punches up the film with plenty of humor, such as Affleck's over the top role as the school jerk, but he also shows many of these characters worrying and wondering about the future and what it holds for them. Some of these scenes will break your heart. For example, David Wooderson tells his high school buddies about how the real world is a drag because of its rules and how he just does what he wants no matter what the cost. Everyone knew this guy, and also saw him fail in life. Randall Floyd muses about his high school career, stating that "if these are the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself." The last scene of the film, with that open road stretching into the distance--and into the uncertain future, for that matter--really sums up the what this movie is about.

I think the viewer who will understand this movie the best will be the person who went to high school and has been out of that place for a period of years. That way you can appreciate the humorousness of the various characters while understanding the implications of their actions. The people who were not caught up in high school because they understood that four years is only a small part of the grand sweep of life were the ones who generally succeeded after leaving the hallowed halls. "Dazed and Confused" makes you realize this fact. Although the film is a little too fractured, resulting in several undeveloped characters, it really is an honest look at a painful time in our lives. I highly recommend it, but prepare yourself for nostalgia pangs and a heavy dose of even more painful '70's atmosphere along the way.

The 4 stars are for the movie. While this DVD is terrible in terms of extras I must confess I did buy it because it was cheap, has a great glittery cover, is anamorphic (the last one wasn't) and has a Dolby/DTS 5.1 soundtrack instead of the cruddy 2.0 sound on the last one.

The movie is great but the DVD ain't up to scratch. Linklater has said he is working on HIS OWN special edition with Criterion, which will include loads of cool stuff (much like Criterion have recently done with Linklater's Slacker). Universal denied Linklater this right with their 'Flashback' release so sit tight and wait for the definitive version.

If available cheap I am allowing you to buy to tide you over. Any REAL fan of the film wouldn't buy this version for an everlasting keep.

Universal

Deleted Scenes (SD; 14:27) offers a few bridging scenes, including some dealing with the infamous "pledge" the Coach wants everyone to sign. The video quality of these scenes is pretty spotty at times.

The Blunt Truth (SD; 4:21) is a parody of the old Educational Films documentaries many of us were forced to watch growing up in school, this one of course about the horrors of marijuana use.

Retro Public Service Announcements (SD; 2:03) are two PSA's which play like parodies but are actual vintage pieces, one about venereal disease (replete with bouncy theme song, and no I'm not kidding) and the other the famous littering ad featuring the crying Native American.

U Control has only one fairly lame toggle switch giving information on the tunes that fill the soundtrack.

I am getting the Criterion due to better extra features than the Universal extra features, I hope it will help deciding on your purchase!

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Blu-ray+DVD+UltraViolet Combo Pack) (2013)

The Incredible Burt WonderstoneI didn't research this movie, and I just watched it because of the all-star cast. When I was watching it, it felt kind of like a TV movie, and now I know why. The director, Don Scardino, is mostly famous for directing TV series like 30 Rock, Law & Order, and Cosby, and it is kind of apparent in the movie. Nevertheless, this movie is still watchable and at times funny, and you get to see some guest star magicians like David Copperfield. However, if it was not because of Jim Carrey and Alan Arkin, I would give it 3 stars or less, but these guys really saved the movie. I also hope Olivia Wilde--which I know her mostly for her House, M.D.'s "13" role--to be able to get away from hottie roles before it is too late. I know she is young, and she should start somewhere, but people get bored of just faces rather quickly.

Since it was crushed at the box office and by critics we saw this at a bargain house because it left multiplexes so quickly, on a huge screen, and had a ball. It's a very goofy, at times rude and crude, silly film, but with a surprising heart at its core, particularly when it involves Alan Arkin's character. I loved the way his character is used in the finale, and it's one of the most memorable moments for me this year at the movies. Add to that I was laughing so hard at the ending credits' depiction of what happens to the magician duo's big illusion set piece as time goes on that my friend turned to me and said "It's funny, but it's not THAT funny" because I was lost in laughing so hard I was practically losing my breath. As I've noticed many times in life, comedy is personal, and this one happened to be fascinating and entertaining to me on several levels. I love variety acts, and magicians in particular. I have a soft spot for sweet depictions of the elderly being treated with respect and valued as human beings as they fade away in assisted living homes and nursing homes. I had never seen Olivia Wilde before and thought her wonderful in this. Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Alan Arkin and James Gandolfini (RIP) have a ball in this and it shows--and I caught the wave with them, laughing through most of the film. This film managed to engage me from beginning to end, in both comic and touching ways, and I appreciated that. One of my favorite films of the year.

I almost didn't rent this due to all the bad reviews. Glad I did. If you liked dumb & dumber or the mask then you should like this too.

In an age of movies trying to have twists, hard to understand plots, and 3D I'm glad to say this movie is a great throw back.

It is a lot of physical satire and over the top humor. Lots of old tried & true pant pulls, funny voices, weird faces, and over exaggerated characters. The big time casino owner who doesn't know how old his kid is whose last name is "munny".

This is not a serious movie at all. There is as much of a "life lesson" undertone as the prevuously mentioned movies.

This is a movie ive actually rewatched. I hope this review helps.

Love and Other Disasters (2006)

Love and Other DisastersLove and Other Disasters is a film that very few people even know about. I happened to catch it, maybe 4 years ago as part of the Toronto International Film Fesival, when it was one of the movies showing that year. I saw it with two friends and we all enjoyed it very much! It's light...it's funny...it's cute...a great date movie...and has something for all adults, gay and straight alike (as it has a slight gay element) who like a good romantic comedy. After we saw it.... we never heard another thing about it. It never apparently found a distributor, and never was shown in theaters, to my knowledge. About three years later...it appeared on DVD. I have owned a copy since it came out on DVD and we had one of our "Movie nights" at our home with 8 or 9 friends over, and everyone enjoyed it a lot!

What amazes me in the movie business is all of the total garbage movies that get made and shown in theaters every week..... bad, awful, poorly made and poorly acted films that should never even be produced.... and then there are movies like "Love and Other Disaster" that are well-made, with good acting, and they never see the light of day.

It was such a shame when young and vivacious Brittany Murphy died in December 2009 at age 32, depriving the film world of her sunny countenance. Along with the biopic of rapper Eminem, 8 Mile -8 Mile (Widescreen Edition) -this was my favorite Brittany Murphy film.

A few words of disclosure are necessary about this film. "Love and Other Disasters" is a romantic comedy set in London. There is not one original idea in the script and just about every movie cliche to be found in romantic comedies is in this movie to wit:

-Murphy is a fashion designer with a mixed up love life.

-She befriends a gay photographer (who is actually not gay) that loves her.

-There are several other gay male characters in the film with mixed up love lives.

-In fact, all the characters in the film have a mixed up love life.

-All the actors are employed in the arts -once writes a screeplay called "Love and Other Disasters."

-The film appears to be heading to tragedy but has a wonderful, happy ending.

-The movie ends by having the action in the film made into a movie.

Having made these disclosures, I will say I adore this movie. This is such a warm film, so full of good spirits and love, that it transcends all these cliches to be not only good entertainment but a memorable film experience. The chemistry between Jacks (Murphy) and Paolo (Santiago Cabrera) is natural, unforced and credible. Almost all the actors are likeable, you root for them, and you want their love to succeed. And it does.

I can't think of a romantic comedy I've seen in recent years that I enjoy as much as this 2006 production. It's better than "Four Weddings And A Funeral" Four Weddings and a Funeral to which I think it compares very well. This is a sexy, delightful, easy on the eye and mind film that breezes through its 100 minutes and leaves you satisfied. If you're in the mood for mindless entertainment with a big warmth factor, this movie is for you.

Whatever your taste in good movies, you will like at least some parts, if not all, of this movie. Even if you find it hard to embrace this movie, you will find it even harder to dislike it.

At the risk of being controversial, I will rate this movie above multi-threaded ensemble movies like "Love Actually", "Crash", "Valentine's Day" and "New York, I Love You". The surprise is in a singular actress carrying the entire movie, supported by a cast of relatively unknown but competent actors.

As I am writing this review, James Taylor is coming on "live" at the Oscar presentation (this is Oscar night, 7th March in the USA) with Brittany Murphy being remembered on screeen, and her image reprised at the end of Taylor's solo "In My Life". We will never know if she would earn an Oscar one day, but from her performance in this movie, it is not possible to rule out her future potential. I have watched "Ramen Girl", "Uptown Girls" and the Futurama with Brittany's voice, and I went on a binge of Brittany Murphy's movies like "Little Black Book" after I got the news that no more movies would be made by this great actress. This movie was among the prominent ones recommended by Amazon when keying in the actress' name. The movie surprises at many levels.

From earlier reviews I gathered that the plot was going to less straightforward than "Ramen Girl" or "Uptown Girls". Without going into the story line, I like this movie because:

1. The acting was serious, focused and well directed. I cannot think of another actress who could have been better cast in the main role. The British accents all round were from good character thespians.

2. The cinematography was good. There were refreshing camera angles of contemporary London. The Houses of Parliament framed by the London Eye (across the river) was one such unexpected view.

3. The colours were bright. Like on picture post-cards. The indoor shots were unusually bright and colourful. No dim "Memoirs of a Geisha" artwork requiring Night Vision Goggles here. Brittany Murphy's fully nude body in a kitchen scene(strategically covered by a copy of "The Naked Chef") was boldly illuminated. Refreshing to see the details of English interior furnishing instead of the usual American home interiors.

4. For an adult movie, there was relatively little swearing. Then there is a sensible plot. It is fun, but does not sit well as a chick-flick. Nobody picks up a movie like this to feel depressed at the end. Best watched together with close friend(s): beer/alcohol optional, not a necessity. For morbid, pick up "Deadline" or "Dead Girl".

Brittany Murphy does a good "damsel in distress" with pleading doe-like eyes, as in "Ramen Girl". This appears be a recurring pattern in her movies. Well, if you are good at something, keep doing it Denzel Washington does a good "Don't lie to me", Tom Hanks replayed "stupid" in "You've Got Mail" and Julia Roberts does a good petulant temper tantrum in "Pretty Woman", "Pelican Brief", "Erin Brockovich" and so on. I thought that Brittany's waif-like begging was similarly getting to be one of her acting trade-marks.

I am glad to have experienced this movie.

An offbeat comedy treat that will entertain some viewers and annoy others. There are some enjoyable humorous scenes and some touching romantic moments but this movie is not for everyone.

Brittany Murphy's performance is pretty good, but Matthew Rhys seems to shine more brightly in this talented but quirky ensemble cast. The chemistry between Brittany and Santiago Cabrera, while leading to a predictable outcome, is endearing and at times downright funny.

Give this one a chance and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Love and Other Disasters is bursting with eye-candy, ear-candy, and heart-candy. The cinematography is gorgeous, the music is wonderfully charming and the story is cute. Fans of well-written/acted/produced films take note: this is one such gem.

The comedy works as well as the romance, and the characters poke fun at movie stereotypes as well as at themselves (the wacky smoker gal is hilarious) and the relationships are brightly played out in the 90 minute run-time. From start to finish I couldn't find anything wrong with this one!

There are 3 central characters, each trying to find love, each with lessons to learn. The gay roomate's story is especially touching.

In the film the characters watch "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and one states its her favorite film. That older film may be a classic, but I enjoyed this one much more.

5/5 stars! Funny, romantic film.

Blu-ray: 1080p video is great, colorful. DTS HD sound is fantastic. No special features, no subtitles.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (The Criterion Collection) (1998)

Fear and Loathing in Las VegasI find it sad that much of the country bases it's movie selections on the opinions of hacks like Leonard Maltin. I can see why this wasn't a mainstream success due to it's waaaaaay out in left field mentality, but because of all the negativity this great film remains unseen by many. As people come around to the acting genius of both Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro (and they will), they will inevitably want to see their earlier works and then, finally, they will see what all the hype wasn't about.

Terry Gilliam absolutely NAILED Hunter's book. The visuals are incredible and alarming. The angles, strange and enticing. I heard that they filmed this movie without a script, just the book in hand. After reading the book, I believe trying to write a script for it could have severly dampened the impact.

Now for the drug use... If you are the type of person who realized that Fight Club wasn't really about the fighting, then you will also realize that Fear & Loathing isn't really about the drug use. According to the big dog movie critics only a stoner will appreciate this movie, which leads me to believe that only idiots become professional movie reviewers.

If you appreciate ground-breaking cinema, truly innovative directing, first-rate acting and are looking for something different... the ramblings of a gonzo journalist could be just the thing.

This DVD finally gives one of Terry Gilliam's lesser-loved (but brilliant!) films the red carpet treatment. The commentary from Gilliam is crazed and passionate; Depp and Del Toro really show off their wit, charm, and intelligence along with producer Laila Nabulsi's back-stage insight, and the last commentary is a rather odd and screwball one from Thompson himself. I won't tell you a thing about the last commentary. You've got to buy this and check it out on your own. (Here's a hint: 'Screeee-ahhhh! Raaaaaaaagh!' *other assorted sounds*)

The second disc is crammed with some great goodies as well Depp reads letters written to/from Thompson. There's a great BBC documentary showing HST and Ralph Steadman undertaking a trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Another gem is a snippet from an audio-book recording of Fear & Loathing with Jim Jarmusch as Raoul Duke! All definitely worth it.

Fear and Loathing isn't just a drug movie (as all the extras on the DVD will reiterate over and over again) it's a truthful, imaginative, twisted, and subversive take on the death of the most idealistic decade and generation. We get to see it all through the eyes of two renegade professionals, one a journalist and the other a lawyer, both fighting the good fight against scum and villainy.

We can't stop here! THIS IS BAT COUNTRY.

Hunter Thompson practiced total immersion journalism. He called this form reporting gonzo journalism.

Hunter Thompson drove to Las Vegas to report on a motorcycle race and ended up writing a story about himself writing a story about a motorcycle race. If he would have written a conventional report on motorcycle racing it would have been interesting to motorcycle enthusiasts for a few days. Since he wrote a gonzo story he had a very wide canvas and he used it well to create a classic.

Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro do justice to the outrageous characters created by Hunter S Thompson. The reader might be turned off by the obstreperous behavior, extreme self indulgence and offensive inconsiderate language. If you can look past this offensive conduct and you will see that Hunter S Thompson gave us an insight into the American character of the 1970's.

It was upsetting to see the only review of this title was not a review at all but a complaint against amazon so I had to put in my two cents. This movie has some of the best performances from Jonny Depp and Benicio Del Toro and Terry Gilliam directs one of his finest films ever. Too bad this one was missed by audiences in 1998 when it quickly came and went from theatres after the first week. If you like Hunter S. Thompson and movies like The Big Lebowski, you'll want to make sure to add this item to your movie collection. The HD transfer alone is worth purchasing this version, but make sure to check out the Criterion DVD which contains interviews from Hunter S. Thompson as well as a full movie commentary that's as entertaining as the movie itself.

If, when you rent this film, you are expecting a Cheech and Chong film, think twice. People frequently compare the two, but Fear and Loathing is not only infinitely better, it is not the screwball comedy everyone seems to think it is.

Johnny Depp plays Raoul Duke, alter ego to gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who wrote the book this film is based on. He is sent on an assignment by Rolling Stone to cover a motorcycle race in Las Vegas. Coming along for the ride is Dr. Gonzo (aka Oscar Zeta Acosta), Duke's repulsive attorney, played by Benicio del Toro. The two rent a very expensive convertible and bring along with them a case full of illegal drugs.

The film is essentially the journey of two drug-fueled madmen through one of the most unfriendly cities in the country, but it's also a study on what life was like in 1971. In the end, as funny as it may be, it's really a docudrama. Gilliam directs the film in his classic "nightmarish" style, creating a truly hellish vision of America. But the biggest surprise of all is how true the screenplay is to the novel. Sure, like any adaptation, some good stuff is taken out, but if you compare what's written down, there isn't that much of a difference.

Most enjoyable, however, are the performances. Johnny Depp is hilarious as Duke and Del Toro, despite how disgusting his character is, is nothing short of a scene stealer. The film is also ripe with cameos, the most memorable are the ones delivered by Harry Dean Stanton, Tobey Maguire, Gary Busey, and of course, Flea of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

I recommend this to any Gilliam/Thompson fans, though in order to enjoy it, you need to watch it in a generally filthy atmosphere, and for some of you, you may need to see it more than once to really appreciate this. Overall, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a very good film filled with moments that stick with you for a long time.

Route 30, Too! Blu-ray (2012)

Route 30, Too! Blu-rayI really enjoyed the first episode (Route 30) and was looking forward to this sequel. However, the acting was disappointing and the story line fell short of being entertaining. I'm debating whether to get the third episode when it's released.

I loved Route 30 so much, when I heard about the sequel I couldn't wait to see it. I gotta be honest I was a little let down by it. I liked the episodic approach of the first movie, Too! gets away from that format and is more a continuation of the "What I believe" episode from the original (IMO the weakest of the three episodes in Route 30). While I love the actors and the job they do the story is a bit of a let down, and to be honest by the end I was quite tired of hearing "Top Poppie" (watch the movie, you'll know what I mean). The movie seemed to me to want to be more goofy than humorous/funny this go round.

I will gladly continue to support John Putch, I love movies like the Route 30 series and look forward to his third installment. Also, I went to college not all that far from the area this was filmed and I enjoy seeing the area being brought back to life on the screen (even if it is just my 60" plasma screen).

Lastly, one thing I did NOT like is that the blu-ray disk came in a cardboard sleeve instead of plastic case. I know with low budget Indy movies like this costs are everything, but I am a collector and like my movies in the plastic protective cases.

My husband loves to find strange, funny quirky films I usually sit there and read but this was FUNNY recognized most of the actors in the film as a matter of fact I think one of the leads is the girl from that TV show "Two Broke Girls" (or something like that) we never saw the first film but now we want to get that . . .
