Ceremony (2011)

CeremonyCEREMONY is one of the brighter starts to rise out of Hollywood this year. Though it was made in 2010 and released on Demand TV before its ultimate release on theaters, it is hopefully going to gather the audience it so richly deserves. It is a young work: the writer/director is Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler, a bright young talent who essentially makes his debut with little sparkler. Not only has he come up with a fresh idea for a story but he has also matched that story with a script that is at all times warmly entertaining and at many points a sensitive, philosophical examination of relationships today. And he has cast the film with some of the finest young actors on screen at present.

Sam Davis (Michael Angarano, a brilliant young actor in his early 20s, so memorable in the deeply touching 'One Last Thing') writes children's books and lives in the child like fantasies of kids. He has a friend Marshall Schmidt (Reece Thompson, another early 20s bright young talent) who happens to show up as the only member of an audience to hear Sam read his latest new children's book. The two boys rekindle their friendship, stagnant for the past year while Marshall recovered from an altercation and hid in his parents home while Sam had a momentary encounter with a beautiful 30s something woman Zoe (Uma Thurman). The two lads decide to take a little trip to ostensibly to get Marshall out of his parent's home to see the world, but in actuality Sam has heard that Zoe is marrying some wealthy guy, Whit Coutell (Lee Pace, another brilliant actor remembered for his shattering performance in 'Soldier's Girl'), at Whit's lavish seaside home.

Sam and Marshall mend long absent feelings of closeness and taking some daring steps they drive to the seaside estate, obtain an invitation to Zoe's party (her wedding to Whit Actually) from Zoe's drunken brother Teddy (Jake M. Johnson). Sam confronts Zoe, stating his love and his desire to marry her, but Zoe needs more than a young kid to satisfy her and sees the opportunities of marrying the moneyed Whit. In a series of incidents both hilarious at times and deeply tender at others all characters discover new concepts of relationships. How the film ends is left for the viewer to discover.

Michael Angarano is pitch perfect as Sam, a young man whose ideals are tested and who must learn the adult role. His skills are so polished at this young stage in his career that he is bound to become a major star. Reece Thompson is not far behind, and Uma Thurman gives one of her most well rounded performances. Lee Pace makes the most of his role, sparkling as the reigning optimist of the story. But in the end most of the credit for the success of this little gem is due to the talent of Max Winkler who writes as well as he directs: he is a formidable force. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 11

This was actually a very believable and fun film, and it finally gave Lee Pace a chance to show his acting range before being possibly typecast with the upcoming Twilight and Hobbit roles.

The story follows a twenty-something played neurotically well by Angarano (who showed great maturity in Gentlemen Broncos [Blu-ray]) who cannot get over falling for a forty-something played by Uma Thurman. He finds a way to try and crash her remote upstate New York wedding and pre-party while using his friend as a cushion and unbeknownst helper. The story has some comedic, yet realistic moments highlighted by the best performance (and comic relief role) in the film with Jake Johnson playing the perpetually drunk brother of the bride.

The Blu quality is standard, with there being some nice views of the island they filmed at and around. The clarity is not superb or benchmark, nor is the DTS and the yellow lens bled out the brightness, like Winkler was trying to make it look retro (which when you let the menu play customers thought it looked like a 70s film). The weakness of this product though are the Blu supplements, which in this volume of bad quality makes it hard for me to rate the product any higher than four:

* Deleted scenes, 2 minutes. Glad they were cut as they would have made for some tedious additions.

* Outtakes, 2:35 minutes. Unfunny and could have been left off the disc.

* Extended scene, 2:36 minutes. The only supplement I liked it was from the dinner table scene and involved more Jake Johnson comedy (I remember him most as the roommate in No Strings Attached (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)), mistake to cut it.

* Making of, 21:47 minutes. A very dry interview and clip laden piece with the mains and director dissecting their roles and love for each other, skipper.

* Max Winkler Makes Ceremony, 8:18 minutes. A strange mix of tabletop interviews and behind the scenes showcasing his thinking out loud process. I suppose any huge fans of his will want to see this.

* Behind the scenes footage, 7:17 minutes. Big mistake to include this as it was either meant to show how bored people were in between takes, or was providing a yearbook clip of the moments wanting to be forgotten during production, skipper.

* A Year in a Tent, 3:50 minutes. The full length clip/short film of Lee Pace's character in Africa. LoDef and slightly tedious, but worth the watch if you liked the clips left in the film.

* HDNet promo, 4:25 minutes. Did not even look HD and grabbed quips from the other supplements here.

English language with subs in same and Spanish. I did not see any real benchmark Blu clarity on sound or picture (though still worthy to see) and the supplements were hopefully a lesson in how-to and what not to include for this first-time feature director. I liked the outcome (not your typical ending) and it is quirky enough to give it a comedy tag. Four for the film and zero for the rest.

I watched this entire movie. I say that because pretty much from the first five minutes, I was questioning the wisdom of continuing all the way up until the end. While it was approaching decent as endings go, it really wasn't worth the painful chore of sitting through it. I can't believe it's flashing up the same reviews as much better movies, though the fact that it has only 11 reviewers speaks volumes.

The characters were two-dimensional, the story was drawn out to the point of being drawn thin, and the movie as a whole is A COMPLETE BORE-FEST. Ultimately, I just didn't care about any of the characters-they were wet-toilet-paper thin, and boredom seemed to be their only motivations for doing ultimately pointless things. Sure, there were attempts at exploring deeper themes and their resolutions, but they were primitive and trite; nothing here is worth the amount of time and film that this movie wastes.

Pass on this clunker and watch "Hi Fidelity" instead-it's a much better version of the same kind of story: a self-centered central character on an awkwardly-painful-to-watch tirade who eventually finds himself and turns out to be a decent guy. And it has other characters who are actually interesting and shallow in all the right places.

I loved Ceremony and was shocked it didn't get a wider release in theaters. Angarano is brilliant and Jake Johnson gives one of my favorite performances in a long time. If you're looking for a very unique, fresh new movie filled with young talent check this out.

I could not get past about 20 minutes into the movie. The main character does not talk like any guy I've ever met saying things like "drinkies, snackies, and you silly goose" to another guy? really? He annoyed the heck out of me, so I couldn't have cared less about why he was doing what he was doing.

American Pie 2 (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (2001)

American Pie 2Don't you hate sequels that are just clones of the original movies with ten times the action and one one hundredth the plot? Well, then you'll be happy to hear that American Pie 2 isn't one of those movies. The plot, which doesn't play a significant part in either, is different: the four friends, back from their first year of college, have decided to rent a lake house on Lake Michigan and throw the biggest and best party that the town has ever seen. Also, Jim (Jason Biggs) is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) the hot Czech girl that he almost scored with the previous year, and he is taking lessons on how to please girls from Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), his prom date. During these sequences, we, the audience, begin to realize that Jim and Michelle are meant to be, and part of the fun is watching how oblivious they are to it. But the best part is, the entire cast is back, although, there is a shift in importance of characters. The four main guys don't change much, but Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) does get a little weirder. Stifler (Seann William Scott) becomes a bigger character in this one, though. He still isn't part of the group, but he is in more scenes and he's in on the deal this time. The girls are a whole different story. In the first movie, they were given significant screentime and they appeared in scenes by themselves. Now, the only girl who you can say has "significant" screentime is Michelle, the girl (of the five main ones) who had the smallest role in the first one. Also, there is only one big scene with only girls, and it is with Vicky and Jessica (Tara Reid and Natasha Lyonne). Michelle is by herself for a few moments at the end, but then Jim arrives to whisk her away. All in all, this movie is hilarious, just as good, if not better than, the first. As I said, not too much story, but (1) there is more plot in this movie than in most other teen movies combined, and (2) that isn't what fans are looking for in an American Pie movie. Enjoy, and prepare for Shermination.

Man, there are few movie sequels that are as good (or better) than the original movie, but AP 2 is one of them!

I laughed a lot, the general feeling is that the cast is really enjoying themselves and is tuned to the task ahead. Very good indeed.

heard they are preparing a third one (Called AMERICAN WEDDING, I guess). I hope the third part of the "trilogy" be as godd as the frst two movies.

Also, this was a message to the Wayan Brothers, who [messed] up totally the second SCARY MOVIE. It proved that they could have written a better sequel.

The first American Pie started the trend, but American Pie 2 has even more laughs. And it has retained and amplified one important aspect of the original, a somewhat cornball sentimentality that offers a nice counterbalance to the gross sight gags and pervasive atmosphere of salaciousness.

Jason Biggs continues to throw himself into the most embarrassing of situations with admirable gusto, and the movie hinges on his ability to play Jim's most humiliating shenanigans with an odd but appealing, dogged dignity...even when wearing only his drawers. His comic timing is even better than last time, and the movie's best moments come of his straight-faced delivery. And in this sequel you can see how Alyson Hannigan managed to walk off with the most famous line in the original: Given much more weight in American Pie 2, Hannigan is a delight, playing Michelle's offbeat geekiness but hidden warmth to perfection. And her deadpan delivery (the "trumpet" line is bound to become another classic) is beautiful as always. Shannon Elizabeth is surprisingly lacklustre, and Tara Reid is still stuck with the most boring character of the bunch, but otherwise the rest of the supporting cast (Seann William Scott is especially good, reprising uber-jock Stifler) is great, and the sight and verbal gags come faster and tighter than in the original, with the benefit of familiar characters. The famous central gag (won't give it away) had me belly-laughing for a solid minute, something I haven't done since the first time I saw Clerks.

No, it's not cerebral, nor is it an unprecedented classic. But for a good rowdy night of teen comedy, American Pie 2 hits the spot.

American Pie was such a smash hit in 1999, the sequel of 2001 is just as good. The five mains guys: Finch, Oz, Stiffler, Kevin and Jim return as college men.

The story starts out with Jim on his last day of his college freshman year. His nerdy father is coming to pick him up and as he walks in Jim's dorm, he's getting laid with a blonde chick. So Jim goes home, Nadia calls him and says she's coming to see him at the end of the summer.

Now, Jim must prepare himself for Nadia because she wants to sleep with him. Now the five guys go out and rent a beach house for the summer to party and meet girls. He doesn't know how good he is in bed so he goes to find the band geek that he got lucky with after prom last year. She tells him he [isn't good]. So she decides to help him out.

Meanwhile, the guys are painters working on a house where two chicks live that Stiffler thinks are lesbians. So see what the guys do to find out. A lot of funny stuff happens here. Now at the end of the summer, the guys have a major blowout and Nadia is here and Jim is ready for her. But now after all the help the band geek gave him, he fell in love with her.

Will he score with Nadia or go for the band geek? Remember Sherman "The Sherminator"? See who he actually gets lucky with. This is the great sequel to first Anerican Pie. It is a must watch.

I'm not a big fan of sequels. It's usually a frantic attempt of hollywood to squeeze more big bucks out of a successful first movie, and they usually fail miserably, especially where the story is concerned. American Pie 2 is no exception in regards to the story. It has a pretty flimsy plot, and seems to drag some of the gags on a little too long. However, AP2's gags are even funnier than the original movie! Which, to me, makes AP2 even more enjoyable than the original! After all, when I watch movies such as these, I don't really expect any great stories in them. I only look forward to the laughs, and AP2 delivers superbly!

However, the biggest problem I had with this movie is with a few of the characters. To be precise, the character of Heather, portrayed by Mena Suvari. In the original, she was a main character in the story, and played it brilliantly. In AP2, she's reduced to barely a supporting character, and most of her lines are spoken through phone conversations with "Oz". And what did the producers do to her appearance? She was extremely cute in the original, but in this movie her appearance is less than appealing, and seems to get worse as the movie progresses. I know I'm being a bit picky here, but I had to give a reason why I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars, and this was the main reason.

However, it certainly doesn't take away from the laughs in the movie. If you liked the first movie, you'll love this one. Jason Biggs is the perfect actor to play a guy in which bad and embarrassing things happen to. Eugene Levy as his father is just as funny in this movie as well.

There will be an American Pie 3 (American Wedding), due for release in August 2003. I get a sinking feeling that they should've quit while they were ahead, as half the cast will not be in the 3rd movie. Without all the regular characters, any future sequels can't possibly equal the first 2 movies. But, I could be wrong after all, I wasn't expecting a lot from AP2.

Recommended to all American Pie fans.

Arthur Newman (Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack) (2012)

Arthur NewmanImagine my surprise when out of the blue and without any pre-release buzz or ads this movie showed on a single screen for all of Greater Cincinnati this weekend. I figured that this will not stick around very long and hence I went to see it right away.

"Arthur Newman" (2013 release; 100 min.) brings the story of a man (played by Colin Firth) who is in the dumps: he just got fired from his job, his ex-wife does not care for him, and his 13 yr. old son hates the mere sight of him. As the movie opens, we see Colin Firth acquiring a new identity, actually someone who passed away a few years ago named Arthur Newman. He then fakes his own death and takes off, as a "new man". Arthur plans on driving from Florida to Terre Haute, IN, where a job as a golf instructor awaits. But on his first night on the road, he makes the acquaintance of a young woman (played by Emily Blunt), who herself is running away from her own troubles, and using her twin sister's identity ("Mike") along the way. Mike decides to join Arthur on the trip to Indiana. To tell you much more of the plot would ruin your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Several comments: first, this is a road movie for the most part, as we follow the two main characters from motel to hotel, and from town to town, on their way to Indiana. Second, the main characters are engulfed in melancholy as on the one hand they are running away from something, yet at the same time are pining for love and someone who understands their problems. Both performances from Colin Firth and Emily Blunt are ace from start to finish. Blunt has been on an incredible run recently (just last year alone I saw her in Your Sister's Sister, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Looper and the Five Year Engagement, and she shone in just about all of them), and she continues that hot streak in this movie.

This movie gathered positive buzz last Fall when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I had been waiting eagerly to see it. The screening I saw this at here in Cincinnati was not particularly well attended, and so I doubt this will stick around long in the theaters. That said, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, and if you are in the mood for something where things don't blow up every 5 minutes, I would readily recommend "Arthur Newman".

Be careful what you wish for! Sometimes the dream is far better than the reality, but it is the dream that drives our eponymous hero to plan and execute some drastic action. This R-rated dramedy is more drama than comedy; furthermore, if you have any trouble hearing dialogue, you might want to consider closed captions, either in a theater, or wait for the DVD. You don't want to miss the finer points in this plot.

We watch:

* Colin Firth ("A Single Man" and "The King's Speech") speaking American (!), is Arthur Newman, a frustrated wanna-be golf pro who, after a down-hill slide, has decided to reinvent himself. "New man," get it? He cleverly fakes his own death and hits the road.

* Emily Blunt ("Your Sister's Sister") also speaking American, is Mike, a young woman with nothing to lose. She encounters our hero on the road and they proceed to go adventuring...

* Anne Heche ("Cedar Rapids") is Mena, the girl he left behind. She knows he's boring, but she loves him anyway.

* Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") is Grant, our hero's son. It turns out that he is the most compelling reason for Arthur Newman to re-think his decision.

As our couple journeys on, they break into people's houses and take on the personalities (and clothes!) of the occupants. They are far more comfortable being someone else than being themselves. The tagline is: "If you don't have a life, get someone else's." They find this great...until it isn't.

This is no light-hearted romp, but we are in the hands of pros. Both Firth and Blunt are wonderful actors, so there is no quibble about the quality of their work. I would like... Maybe... Oh, I don't know WHAT I would like... Maybe the DVD from Amazon will help me decide.

"Arthur Newman," (2012) is a new independently-made American road picture/comedy/romantic drama starring two British actors with comedy chops, Colin Firth and Emily Blunt. It was directed by Dante Ariola from a screen play by Becky Johnston, (Seven Years In Tibet [HD]. And I'm going to quote its plot summary, written by its screenwriter Johnston, as posted at The Internet Movie Database:

Wallace Avery hates his job. His ex-wife and son hate him, and he's blown his one shot at living his dream. Not wanting to face all this, he stages his own death and buys himself a new identity as Arthur Newman. However, Arthur's road trip towards a new life is interrupted by the arrival of the beautiful but fragile Mike, who is also trying to leave her past behind. Drawn to one another, these two damaged souls begin to connect as they break into empty homes and take on the identities of the absent owners: elderly newlyweds, a high-roller and his Russian lady, among others. Through this process, Arthur and Mike discover that what they love most about each other are the identities they left at home, and their real journey, that of healing, begins.

The acting is competent to the job. The well-born Colin Firth, once such tasty eye candy, now looking very middle-aged, plays Arthur. (See The King's Speech for which he won the Best Actor Oscar, Bridget Jones's Diary, Love Actually, Pride and Prejudice (Restored Edition). The equally well-born Emily Blunt, a Golden Globe winner for The Devil Wears Prada, plays Mike. Anne Heche, (Six Days, Seven Nights, Donnie Brasco), an actor with a more eventful private life than most of Hollywood, plays Arthur's girlfriend Mina Crawley.

But remarkably little happens in this road picture; most scenes are reminiscent of actor's studio exercises. The rather distasteful scenes of the couple breaking into people's houses and play-acting as the occupants while they make love have a desperate vibe, as in, `We gotta do sumphin. We need more screen time." (The film runs only 101 minutes). And it flies in the face of common sense for a man who has tasted some success in golfing under his real name Wallace Avery, to think he can capitalize on that success under the A/K/A of `a new man.'

The film was largely made in North Carolina, so it gives us some lovely scenery with which most viewers will not be familiar. Some of it was filmed quite close to my Carolina Beach residence; the beach scenes at Fort Fisher. Coles Motel? Well, that's very near our cute little beachy keen library branch. So that's a plus for us--rather few -local residents and visitors. But, sorry, I can't recommend the film.

Kung Fu Dunk

Kung Fu DunkI love Kung Fu movies and there are not enough good ones out there. I know people love Jackie Chan, he's fun to watch, but all of his fight scenes look so choreographed. The kid is this movie is AWESOME! The fight scene in the bar is amazing! He is very fast and extremely fluid and when the scene was over I jumped out of my seat and cheered. Yes, this movie is kind of silly, but that adds to the charm and overall entertainment this movie offers. Movies are not supposed to be realistic. If a movie can take your mind on a mini vacation away from reality for 90 minutes or more it has done its job, and this movie does that.

My wife shopped for this Movie everywhere, and finally we found it on Amazone! Great place to shop, and trust worthy as well! Excellent movie, and thanks for getting it to us on time.

Wholesome, family-friendly fun. You may need to struggle through some subtitles, but this is way better than any of that Air Bud nonsense.

Our story begins with great cinematography (only early in the movie), an orphaned infant and a note. The child is raised by a kung fu master and trained with all of the clichéd wisdom behind the yins, yangs and qi ("chi") of the universe and one's self. After the untimely death of his master, Fang Shijie (Jay Chou) grows up as a kind-hearted yet semi-rebellious kung fu student.

Fang gets involved with some of the wrong people and gets expelled from his kung fu school. But his skillful aim is quickly discovered by friendly hustler who directs his hands to basketball. It turns out that Fang's skill in kung fu translates well, making him a 100% free thrower even from half court...that is, when there's no pressure or opposition. His greatest opposition is from the team captain, who has a drinking problem that is presented in a rather family-friendly way.

Fang needs to learn the basic skills of the game and teamwork to be able to utilize his world class arm. Through the support of his teammates and hard work he develops into a fine player.

Strong elements of comedy and classic kung fu theater action-isms mesh well with modern, stylistic camerawork. The fighting and stunts are good (not great), and are not the focus of this movie after the first act. This movie is about basketball and teamwork.

The greatest thing about this movie is that Fang's skill is never met with arrogance. He is always humble. He wants to be an appreciated member of the team in addition to showing what he can do. He also helps his team captain "defeat" his drinking problem.

The only bad thing about this family flick is part of the finale during the final game. At this point hokey-wholesome turns uber-ridiculous when Fang's kung fu school masters come to his aid with their weird, Harry Potter-esque personalities. This scene also made everything about Fang instead of him being part of the team. Thankfully, after 5-10 minutes of this, it's back to teamwork along with an unfortunately slow but happy ending.

I absolutely loved this movie. It had all the comedy, romance, and plain goodness I look for in a movie. It didn't bore me at all. I would definitely watch this movie over and over again. The cover and synopsis really made me misjudge the movie but it is greater than it seems. Definitely watch this movie. Too good to miss!!!!

Get Shorty (1995)

Get ShortyA loan shark from Florida, who loves movies and winds up in Hollywood on a collection job, decides to take a shot at the movie business while he's there, in "Get Shorty," directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Dark humor and richly textured characters drive this story of Chili Palmer (John Travolta), the shylock from Miami Beach who aspires to a life beyond keeping a book for thugs, in this faithful adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. When circumstances take him to Las Vegas to look for one Leo Devoe (David Paymer), a dry-cleaner in debt up to his eyeballs who blew town after an airline scam, Chili goes on to Hollywood to do a favor for the casino operator who tipped him off as to Leo's whereabouts. The "favor" is contacting film director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who has payment overdue on a note issued to him by the casino. Zimm has made a name for himself (at least in his own mind) by directing horror movies; but he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. Ultimately, Chili gets involved with Zimm and actress Karen Flores (Rene Russo), who has starred in some of Zimm's horror flicks, as well as with two time Academy Award nominee Martin Weir (Danny DeVito), the "shorty" of the title. Chili is finally in his element, but his Miami Beach days are not yet behind him; there's still some settling up to do according to one Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina), owner of the book kept by Chili in Florida. Travolta not only goes the distance here, but creates a definitive character in Chili; even as Sean Connery is James Bond, and Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes, Travolta "is" Chili Palmer. With nuance and charisma, he does this guy from the inside out. He has the look and the mannerisms; he walks the walk and talks the talk. And nobody in the history of the cinema has used a cigarette as a prop better than he does in this movie. It's a commanding, Oscar-worthy performance, every bit as good (possibly even better) than the role of Vincent he created in "Pulp Fiction." His presence simply dominates the film, and he's up against some stiff competition, because this movie is filled with great characters. Not only Hackman, who does a terrific job as Zimm, but Russo, who sizzles, and DeVito, who adds some real flair as the "Movie Star," and Farina, whose toughness and lack of wit make him a memorable character. Also exceptional are Delroy Lindo, as Bo Catlett, a thug and wanna-be movie producer, James Gandolfini, as "Bear," a stuntman who works with Catlett, and Jon Gries as Ronnie, a "Hollywood" style tough guy who also works with Catlett. Sonnenfeld did a great job of bringing this world of "Get Shorty" to life. The story is interesting and delivered with outstanding dialogue and plenty of action, all of which Sonnenfeld keeps moving at a perfect pace and with impeccable timing. This is one thoroughly enjoyable, funny movie that absolutely begs for a sequel. In recommending it, I have to borrow one of Chili Palmer's best lines: "Look at me." Because that says it all. This is one movie you don't want to miss.

It takes a loan shark leading the way to make Hollywood honest. "Get Shorty" returns in a new 2 disc "Collector's Edition" DVD just in time for the sequel "Too Cool" which will be premiering in theaters in March. Translating Elmore Leonard's novels to the screen can be a tricky business luckily both screenwriter Scott Frank and director Barry Sonnenfeld are both up to the task with an inventive dark comedic film. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) heads west to collect a debt from down-and-out B-movie producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman). When Harry can't pay, Chili opts to help him make a movie about, well, Chili Palmer. The catch is that Chili and Harry need a star to make their movie viable. Chili quickly finds that the film business shares a lot in common with the world of organized crime. Chili romances B-Movie queen Karen Flores (Rene Russo) an exof Harry's and persuades film star Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) to star in the film but not before running into a Cadillac of very funny mishaps along the way. Featuring a great performances from Dennis Farina as the clueless Ray `Bones' Barboni, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, DeVito and a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini, "Get Shorty" positively sparkles with wit and energy.

Sporting a new high definition transfer "Get Shorty" looks simply marvelous. With a sharp looking transfer showing a minimum of digital artifacts and no analog flaws, "Get Shorty" deserves the deluxe treatment. The image has amazing depth and an image sharper than Chili's aim. The colors practically leap out from the screen brighter than Harry Zimm's blindingly white teeth from the moment the pink and blue titles pop up on the screen until the moment we hear "cut" at the end. With blacks richer and darker than Chili's stolen coat, MGM has done a superb job of translating this modern classic to DVD. The crystal clear sound comes across with more presence than B-Movie queen Karen Flores' screams.

Extras are exceptionally good in this "Special Edition". It's like having seconds of a terrific desert; while no one really needs it, it's great to have just the same. We get a number of notable extras as part of this rich meal. The second disc has three featurettes on different aspects of the film, the deleted "Graveyard Scene", outtakes, the "Get Shorty" party reel, a documentary from Bravo Channel on the making of the movie and a sneak peak at "Be Cool". "Get Shorty: Look at Me" opens the book on how Elmore Leonard came up with the plot for "Get Shorty" and developed the idea. DeVito, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, Sonnenfeld and other key cast and crew participate in this featurette on the production of the film. Full of clips from the movie to illustrate the points made throughout the featurette, it's a great summation of the greatness of this film. It's a 30 minute love fest reminding fans why they love this movie so much. The 20 minute "Get Shorty: Wise Guys and Dolls" focuses on the fun, complex characters of the movie. "The Graveyard Scene" featurette allows Sonnenfeld to comment on the single deleted scene of the movie included the hilarious, well, graveyard scene. Featuring a funny cameo with Ben Stiller, Sonnenfeld clearly regretted cutting the scene but Sonnenfeld couldn't find a place for sequence where it fit. The behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews last longer than the actual scene itself. "Going Again" features footage from outtakes and a discussion from Sonnenfeld about the technique of using long takes, pulling out the best bits and putting it together to make magic. The sneak peak for "Be Cool" promises that the sequel to "Get Shorty" promises to be as funny as the first film. Set in the music business, it may not be more than a promo piece for the film but it gives viewers enough of a taste to rope `em in.

Bravo's "Page to Screen" documentary featuring Peter Gallagher features plenty of interviews with critics, other writers and focuses as much on how Elmore Leonard comes up with the material in his books, writes them and, once again, takes us behind-the-scenes of the production of the movie. The real treat is hearing from the real Chili Palmer discussing the "reel" Chili Palmer and Leonard's character. The "Party Reel" mainly consists of bits and piece of cut footage and behind-the-scenes stuff nothing earth shattering or all that funny. In addition to the "Get Shorty" theatrical trailer and we get two promos one for "Fargo" and one for "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". My only complaint is the MGM "promo" opener that they put on ALL of their DVDs. It's annoying and, unfortunately, there's no way to pass it by. It's a pretty minor issue but the fact that it's on all of their DVDs makes it a real pain.

A dry, witty commentary by Barry Sonnenfeld highlights this disc. The only drawback is the lack of participation of Travolta, Hackman, Russo and DeVito. I realize they have busy schedules but it would have been a real highlight and perfect addition to this DVD.

A hip, funny comedy that continues to deliver in spades, "Get Shorty" looks terrific, sounds great and has some terrific special features. This is an example of a re-release that's worth upgrading. Definitely worth owing on DVD and purchasing a second time if you love the movie. This IS the version to own.

"Get Shorty " in my opinion is one of the most hilarious send ups of the Hollywood movie industry ever put to film.Director, Barry Sonnenfeld and writer, Elmore Leonard have put their talents together to create a satirical film, which 'takes no prisoners' in its look at the underhanded ways, that folks wheel and deal to get movies made. The film centers on a charismatic mobster (John Travolta), who while on a trip to L.A., decides to switch careers. He wants to make movies! This is not as far fetched as it seems. Apparently being a movie producer isn't that far of a jump from being a loan shark or racketeer! Along the way Chilly meets up with with a schlock movie producer, a scream queen, a L.A. hood and his henchman, another mobster from Miami and finally the 'Shorty' (a self-involved, superstar actor)of the film's title. All of them underestimate Chilly and think he is just a dumb hood, who can be conned out of some major, illegal money waiting in a locker at the L.A. airport. But Chilly seems to know all the right moves and plays everyone at their own game.Writer, Elmore Leonard wrote this fast paced, witty story after experiencing a real life, frustrating job of trying to write a script for vertically challenged actor, Dustin Hoffman... Revenge must be sweet, because it inspired a great piece of comic writing. The cast of actors in this movie is wonderful. Normally, I'm not the biggest John Travolta fan, but his take on mobster, Chilly Palmer is electrifying. Travolta plays the character with a swagger, confindence, and a smile that is sheer perfection! Gene Hackman is also hilarious as the sleaziest of sleazy Hollywood producers. This guy would sell out his own mother if it ment getting a piece of the gross!.Finally, Danny DeVito just makes this movie with his send up of every spoiled rotten, self-indulgent Hollywood actor that could ever come to mind. Kudos should also go for great, comic supporting roles from James Gandolfini and Dennis Farina. For an evening of some very funny Hollywood satire, I recommend you to get..."Get Shorty"!

Director Barry Sonnenfeld's Get Shorty, based on the book of the same name by Elmore Leonard, is a witty comedy that does all from poking fun at the modern Hollywood movie system to paying tribute to the classic gangster movie and its roots in film noir. Get Shorty follows the life of Chili Palmer, a gangster who lives in Miami Beach, Florida, who is sent on assignment to collect money from a dry cleaner's wife after he has died in a plane crash with money that belongs to Chili's bosses. After learning the dry cleaner is not actually dead, Chili follows his trail to Las Vegas where he learns that the dry cleaner is now in Los Angeles, and also agrees to help collect money from a movie producer that owes the casino money. These events move along at such a quick pace that they barely fill the first half hour of the movie. The remainder of the film is spent with Chili's interactions with Harry Zimm, the movie producer, and his attempts to work with Zimm on a movie and learn more about the movie business in general. Amusingly enough, the movie Chili proposes to Zimm is the same story he is trying to figure out, namely where the dry cleaner went with the money. This self-conscious attitude of the movie, in the same manner of Robert Altman's The Player, shows us an amusing satire of Hollywood. Through the course of the movie, parallels are drawn that depict the Hollywood work ethic as being similar to the type of mob work Chili is involved with. These amusing comparisons play themselves throughout the film, with classically stereotyped roles by an outstanding cast that range from the slimy director/producer to the Colombian druglord. In fact, it is the characters and the dialogue between these characters that make the movie outstanding. There is Chili Palmer (John Travolta), arguably one of the last true gangsters in the old tradition, whose speech and actions are undeniably cool and cutting. As a contrast to Chili, there is his boss, Ray Bones (Dennis Farina), who is a curt, abrasive character that is always looking for a way to one-up whoever he is dealing with. He is the type of person that wields more power than he actually possesses, creating several memorable scenes between his laughable character and Chili's perpetual coolness. Then there is the slimy director, Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), a second rate director of B horror movies, whose interactions with Chili show us a less professional view of Hollywood. There is also the pompous, egocentric actor Martin Weir (Danny Devito), who makes us laugh at the lifestyle of the Hollywood star. All of the characters in Get Shorty show us an amusing side of Hollywood that is simultaneously paying homage to and poking fun at movies. Much of the film is shot in the style of film noir, stressing the gangster attitude that is conveyed throughout. But this convention is even stretched and toyed with in the movie. Chili's character is shot mostly in this style and his clothing is predominantly black, but this is parodied with Ray Bones, who wears light pink although he is himself a gangster. The sunny pastels of Florida and California contrast with this style as well, making us realize this isn't the typical gangster film. That being said, Get Shorty is a clever take on the classic gangster film with an outstanding cast and memorable witty dialogue.

This is one of the cleverest comedies out there. John Travolta plays a bookie (Chili Palmer) in Miami Beach, FL. He is one of these respected hard nose, no BS type of people that just demands respect wherever he goes. But for a change of pace and a change of heart, not to mention money that is owned to him, he flies out to California. He is searching for a man who took a very large some of money, but in the mean time is caught up in the Hollywood movie making industry. He meets up and makes friends with Gene Hackman, a B movie director always looking for the next big break. Rene Russo plays a B movie washed up actress who is helping Travolta get into the movie industry. Mean while, old friends and enemies follow Travolta to the sunshine state to find out what he is up to and possibly move in on the action. This movie also has Danny DeVito, Dennis Farina, cameo by Penny Marshall, Delroy Lindo, James Gandolfini, and more twists and turns that you can imagine. If you are looking for a really fun comedy with lots of stars then this is the movie to get!

Magic Mike (Movie Only + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) (2012)

Magic MikeThis movie is AWFUL. Seriously, just bad. I saw it in the theater AND I pre-ordered the DVD/BluRay/Ultraviolet combo. So why would I want to own a movie I already knew was bad? Can you say Channing Tatum bumping and grinding on the dance floor? Channing Tatum is at his luscious best in this film as far as his dancing and body, but it's like he totally forgot how to act at all (not that he was Oscar material before this anyway). The dancing in this movie is excellent and SO.HOT. and Matthew McConaughey is awesome when he's used for comic relief (when it gets serious even the great McConaughey is pretty bad). The plot and even most of the acting in this movie is just downright pitiful.

Would I own the movie? YEP, I DO. Would I watch the movie more than once? Yep, I have. Would I say it's cinematic magic worthy of an Oscar? NO WAY. Do I recommend this movie to pretty much all women who might kind of like the look of Channing Tatum? Absolutely. Do I recommend this movie if you are looking for a decent plot and good acting? No, no, I don't, please stay far away from this movie if that is what you are looking for!

The dancing and serious babe factor of this movie gets 10 stars, everything else gets -7...makes this one an even 3 stars for me.

I first saw this movie trailer when I saw Haywire. I did not really know who Channing Tatum was(dumb me), let alone he was in Haywire. I thought a male stripper movie. I have seen my share of male strippers and if it was going to be like watching the Chippendales, I thought how boring. Well it came out and it was going strong at the theater in July so what the hell, I went and saw it. All I can say is WOW it was raining men and and hot bods and man candy. Definitely not boring. Channing Tatum can definitely move and the dance in the red thong is Oh My God. We women finally get something decent to look at, after all the years of enduring movies where chicks get naked and the guys are drooling. So the guys get to suck it up. Seeing Channing Tatum's naked rear-end and just about everything else, makes your mouth drop open. He is drop dead gorgeous and sexy as hell and the rest are not bad on the eyes either. Joe Mangianello from True Blood is holy crap hot too. It was a pretty decent story too, not just stripping. I love the strip to KISS's Dr. Love. That was a topper for me. I highly recommend this movie to every red-blooded female out there. When Channing Tatum goes dressed as a cop to strip for the college girls it makes you want to do bad things to get arrested by him. I don't know why anybody should be surprised that this movie has done well, any woman with working eyes has seen it and probably more than once. It is still in the theaters around my home town as this is written. If it was just a dumb stripper movie, in my opinion, it would have been gone by July 1st, not spend 3 months in the theater. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

I received my DVD version of "Magic Mike" today from Amazon.com. It does not contain the additional footage (dance sequences by Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer.) I was told today by someone that only the Blue Ray combo pac version has this. THIS IS NOT CLEAR IN ANY OF THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS PUT OUT BY AMAZON.COM. Shame on you Amazon, for deliberately misleading the public. Since I saw the film, I would not have purchased this DVD, but wanted to see the dance footage that Soderberg did not include in the film. I don't own a BLU RAY DVD player, by the way and can't afford one. I'm certainly disappointed that the Distribution Company distributed this product in this way.

Channing Tatum stars in this drama following his character Mike and The Kid, a guy Mike befriends played by Alex Pettyfer. Mike decides to mentor The Kid and it shows how the lifestyle quickly takes over Kid while Mike is trying to leave the lifestyle. Steven Soderbergh directed from a script by Reid Carolin, whose screenplay was inspired by Tatum's work as a stripper before he made it in Hollywood. Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Cody Horn, and Olivia Munn co-star.

This movie defintely does not live up to the hype!! Very disappointed, there was no plot and a lot of the storylines didn't make sense or fit with the movie. What was the point of the relationship between Mike and Joanna? The drug storyline? There is a LOT of eye candy in this movie and it almost makes up for how bad it really is! Alex Pettyfer's character, The Kid really acted like a kid, he was sulking, pouting, or making bad decisions throughout the movie!

The only good thing about this movie was Channing Tatum, he is a really talented dancer who can act, he just needs the right material. The scene where he danced to the song Pony was HOT!!!! Wait until this one comes out on cable!!

Mark October 23rd on your calendars as that is the day "Magic Mike" (the box office sensation during the summer of 2012) comes to DVD and Blu Ray.

"Magic Mike" stars hunky Channing Tatum (in probably his best role to date) as a male stripper who decides after years of stripping for women as a sideline job that he has had enough.

When Mike (Tatum) befriends a young 19 year old named Adam at the beginning of the film Mike gets Adam into the stripping business only to discover that Adam gets involved with drugs which leads to many problems for the two. Mike then decides he wants to lead a "normal" life, have a relationship with a woman and settle down.

The movie is loosely based on Channing's own real-life as a 19 year old stripper in Florida.

Gay men and females will LOVE the film as not only does it show off Channing's back side (and I am not talking about his back), but the dance numbers, music and story are very strong and believable.

Other studs in the movie include Matt Bomer from television's "White Collar", Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey.

The movie was an enormous box office hit becoming the runaway hit at theatres during the summer of 2012 making over $155,000,000 at the U.S. box office alone on a $7,000,000 budget!!!

The special bonus features will include extended dance sequences, a featurette that contains Channing Tatum being interviewed on what it was like to get his fellow actors into the mold as male strippers and much more!

In July, 2012 Channing announced that the studio and he (as one of the producers) are indeed working on a sequel as the film was an enormous successs.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle / Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Double Feature) (201

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle / Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo BayThe only thing that could've made it better would be a 3pk bundle with A Very Harold & Kumar Xmas. If you're a true stoner or just a Roldy & Kumar fan buy this...buy it right now! Do it. (Insert water bong bubbling sound)

This single one sided DVD features both Harold(John Cho)and Kumar(Kal Penn)films together, "...at the White Castle"(released July/04)and "...Escape from Guantanamo Bay"(released April/08).They are a little above average films in the college-frat-type humour category. Both are staunchly un-politically correct and poke fun at a number of stereotypical situations.

The first film introduces us to the pair who live together;Harold has a dead end job at an accounting firm and Kumar, who cake walked through doctors college, puts off, again and again, following in his fathers footsteps and prefers the good times. One night they get stoned(again)and have a giant craving for some White Castle food. The films' flimsy plot is what most of the movie entails;that is the guys efforts to find a White Castle eatery in which to satisfy their cravings. They go from hang gliding to bumping into Neil Patrick Harris(Doogie Howser)to getting stoned and riding a cheetah(you have top see it to believe it!)and so many more scenarios;some funnier than others. In the end and after a huge amount of grief they finally get their men,er burgers.

The next film finds the two starting where the first film left off.Harold pined throughout the first movie for his sexy apartment neighbour that he had never the courage to ask out.She flew off to Amsterdam and Harold, with Kumar's chiding, decide to fly there in this film to meet up with her unannounced. On the flight Kumar smuggles on some weed and while in the washroom with a home made bong,an elderly lady sees him and thinks its a bomb and yells out "terrorist".In short order both are taken down and shipped to the holding center in Guantanamo Bay,Cuba. While there some real terrorists make an escape attempt which gives the guys their opportunity also. They boat back to the States with some Cuban refugees and land Florida. From here they seek out an old college bud who loans them his car and they head to Texas. It is in Texas where Kumar's old girlfriend, and the one who originally made a stoner out of him,is getting married. Her husband to be got Harold his job so he feels quite respectful of him but Kumar thinks he's less than dirt and wants to bust up the marriage and get his girl back.In the end that is exactly what happens and Kumar and Harold finally seemed bound for a happy ending in life.

Both film feature a nice cameo role by Neil Patrick Harris who plays an over-sexed,drugged up,weird moral-less kind of character. Also both films feature sequences where they run into some strange backwoods couple who help them out along their twisted journey which gives out with some nice humour. The chemistry between these two actors is tremendous which spills out through the camera to us the audience, which in turn boosts ones liking of what transpires on screen;as slim as these plots are.The first film I must say was the flimsiest of the two with little more than a mission to eat as its' main theme, whereas the second added a bit more meat to the bones. Both however are just excuses to throw in numerous sexual/frat like humourous situations. While at times it can get a little been there, done that, the films throw enough of their own original feel in it to make things work.

Technically speaking the films have been transferred nicely and look clear and crisp. They are in their original a/r of 1:78:1,but there are no desserts here people, just the meat and potatoes.

I recommend these two films as they put their own spin on the whole frat humour dynamic.Helping to achieve this are the two characters themselves Kumar and Harold who are very likable and with which we can easily empathize with;which is 90% of the battle in any film.
