Rushmore (The Criterion Collection) (1998)

RushmoreI am a little surprised that so many other people failed to see the merits of this movie. First, this was not a typical predictable Hollywood movie with a predictable ending. Second, it was not a re-hash of some old story line with the same old actors. It is a very well written comedic coming of age movie. Few movies take the time or effort to develop complex, flawed and genuine characters, but director Wes Anderson apparently understands the value of doing so. The emotionally stagnating business tycoon Herman Blume is played brilliantly by Bill Murray the disappointment he feels with his banal life and idiotic children is wrenchingly palpable. But Rushmore Academy student and quirky prodigy Max Fischer enters Herman Blume's dull life, renewing his enthusiam. The movie is both thought provoking and hilarious. Particularly enjoyable are Max's adaptations of "Serpico" and "Platoon" for the high-school drama club. Hands down this was the best comedy produced in the 90's. With the decade that produced MTV sex and bathroom joke frat boy movies, this film offers an intelligent script, cast of characters, and an excellent soundtrack.

What surprises me about Wes Andersen is that he is so in command of his silver screen he defies just about every convention of film making and still manages to come up with a riveting diversion of a movie. You know, that rare brand that makes you laugh but you're not exactly sure what you are laughing about. A movie with the mordant tone of Donnie Darko or The Royal Tennenbaums.

And Rushmore I'd contend is the most extraordinary feather in his illustrious cap to date. It is difficult to classify. Romance features as a pervasive undercurrent, full of mercurial dialogue and quirky moments, but it's not merely a romantic-comedy. It's not even your average angst-filled coming-of-age story. It's an oddity with a flowy screenplay that begs to be discovered individually, for oneself.

The acting all round is top notch. Schwatzman, our young protagonist, is very intriguing in his potrayal of an academically challenged overachiever. Murray delivers a rock solid sad-sack performance as usual, his long face speaking volumes.

The brand of subtle humour may not spring out to everyone but is hilarious when pondered over. For instance,

"Are you a neurosurgeon?"

"No, I'm a barber. But many people make that mistake."

It's anything but an ordinary movie, it does not follow the typical mindset of opening-body-conclusion and its funky vibe may not appeal to everyone. But if you have an appetite for the unusual, it's a very, very beautiful caper and all its weirdness makes perfect sense within its context.

Can't recommend it highly enough for the discerning eye.

I began watching this movie after a few months of trawling my way through the endless chasm of "teen" movies. This included such films as the rather dull Cruel Intentions and the frankly dire American Pie. I admit I am usually hard to please, so at the end of my tether this would need to be superb to return my faith in the Amercian movie industry.

I was not disappointed. This was an absolute gem of a movie perfect in execution, consistently witty, often moving, and always thoroughly enjoyable. I rarely watch a film again immediately after finishing it. This film, I watched three times over the two days I rented it.

The acting was spot on. The love-struck,geeky, selfish yet strangley likeable hero, Max, was played to perfection by Schwartzman, and Bill Murray gave a wonderfully underplayed performance as the lonely, sullen, somewhat lost businessman who befreinds Max. Williams turns in a great performance as the love-interest, and though still a slightly stereotyped Englishwoman, in Rushmore Williams makes it somehow more charming than annoying. The soundtrack is also perfectly matched to the movie. I always believe a good soundtrack adds depth to a movie hightens your emotions, and Lennon, Stevens and co. do just that.

When this film finished you knew it was a classic. From start to finish it is perfectly executed, avoiding cheesy moments, and constantly enthralling. Perhaps most strangely, it is not necessarily a new plot idea, its just been done here so well, that it deserves a place among the finest movies of the last few years. Classic.

The Criterion edition of "Rushmore" is a phenomenal package that fans of the movie should not be without. But first, the movie itself is a real treat. Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), 10th grade student of Rushmore academy, is involved in playwriting and numerous extra-cirricular activities. The only problem is he faces expulsion due to his lack luster grades. Towards the beginning of the film he comes to admire Mr. Blume, a self made millionaire in a bad marriage played wonderfully by Bill Murray. The two of them become good friends, each displaying a mutual respect for one another, until they both fall for the same woman, a widowed first grade teacher played by Olivia Williams. If anything, this movie shows the hardships of growing up as a teenager and coming to terms with feelings so overwhelming (in this case unrequited love) that you can't deal with them. Funny, poignant, and intelligent, it's an excellent coming of age story highlighted by the incredible performances of all the players. The Criterion DVD is packed with a trailer, a Charlie Rose show segment with both Bill Murray and director/co-writer Wes Anderson, an audio commentary with Wes Anderson, co-writer Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman, "Making of..." documentary, audition footage, and more. Excellent movie, excellent special features. Need I say more?

For years I loved movies, couldn't get enough of them. Then all of a sudden I stopped going to them, stopped watching them except for the occasional daliance. This movie got me excited about movies again. It's a movie in a class by itself, there is no genre or enough words to describe it. It amazes me how many of the reviewers on here hated this movie. The ones who hated it, really HATED it. What is wrong with people today? This is the audience that made me dislike movies, the masses that require cookie cutter plots, pointless action, and thoughtless humor in order to be satisfied. It isn't often a complete gem of a movie comes along and grabs me but this one did. Bill Murray turns in his best performance ever. I'm sure the people going into this movie expecting Mr. Crazy-Funny-Groundhog-Day Bill Murray were sadly disappointed by a Bill Murray who can actually convey the gammut of emotions in a single movie. I have extraordinary respect for Mr. Murray, more so now than I did before. And the kid who plays Max really surprised me. I can't remember what his name is and I don't want to look it up but I know he's related to Talia Shire somehow. He's going to be one to watch. As long as movies like this keep coming out once in a while (for another gem, check out "Election") I won't let the simpleton American movie grinches who seem to populate the key demographics on movie producers' exit poll ratings flow charts ruin my good time.

Kamikaze Girls

Kamikaze GirlsThe only way to legally see this movie in widescreen. Beautiful Blu Ray picture. Extras disc is Region 2, I think, you'll need a R0 player to watch it, but there's nothing on it worth seeing. If you need to see the extras they are on the standard DVD you can rent.

(this review is from my DVD review of the movie, I felt the first 2 reviewers here are reviewing it more on the merits of what region a bonus disc is rather than the movie itself, perhaps you may be a first time viewer of this movie?)

A story between two seemingly unlike people on the surface, but more simlilar then either know underneath.

Some people may think the premise has been done before, but truth be told, everything has been done before. In my opinion it hasn't been done quite as well until now. Underneath all the quirkiness and silly moments, you catch a glimpse of what SOME teenage girls are looking for as they grow up...and that is simply someone they can really call a friend.

At first, you would think one girl is weak while another is strong, but they are more appropriately described as apprehensive. The frilly Momoko hides behind her fantasy Rococo/Lolita facade and the vulgar Ichiko her tomboy/grease monkey grimace. But what both girls hide and sometimes try to run away from is finding true friendship in an otherwise empty and uncaring world.

This really is a beautiful and smart movie, it just so happens to be absolutely hilarious. Witness Momoko's distaste for mass produced fashion from Jusco, and the fictitious tale a once mousy Ichigo created to run away from.

Buy it, watch it once for the experience...watch it again and again for it's little nuances, and see if you can pick up on the extra layers.

Being a big fan of the DVD release ( Kamikaze Girls ), I was excited to see this on Blu-Ray!

Unfortunately, the release is flawed for anyone outside of the UK (or with a region-free/PAL player).

First, the good news: Video quality is very good (the DVD used a non-anamorphic transfer (so on a widescreen TV, black bars on all 4 sides) with "permanent subtitles" part of the video and pretty poor video. The Blu-Ray improves these in every way -video is sharp for the most part (some scenes seem a little soft, but a very big improvement over the DVD. Definitely doesn't appear to be an "Upscale/Upconvert"). I will note while it is Anamorphic widescreen, there are STILL black bars on all 4 sides, just much smaller (about 1 inch on each side (left/right/top/bottom), on a 32" TV) I don't know why this is.

Subtitles are removable, audio is Japanese only (5.1).

Unfortunately, part of the problem comes with the 2nd disc (extras) the extras include music videos, trailers, a short film, interviews with director & cast, and a 40-minute making-of clip (all on the 2nd disc) while Disc 1 (Blu-Ray) is region free, Disc 2 is PAL-only and will not play on all/most players (a PS3, for example). These were NOT all on the US DVD, so this is a disappointment. There are no extras on the Blu-Ray itself.

Additionally, the "Sideways Mode" is missing (it was on the US DVD). The US DVD also included a booklet (Kamikaze Girls: Novala Takemoto preview) and a nice insert for the chapter listing.. none of which are on this set.

If you only care about the movie, this is still a great upgrade from the US DVD, just don't expect to be able to access the extras.

The Back-Up Plan (2010)

The Back-Up PlanAs a fan of romantic comedies, Jennifer Lopez, and Alex O'Loughlin, I loved this movie. Yes, it followed the typical plot structure and conventions of romantic comedies, but, so what? (Why aren't action movies, and other movies aimed at men, criticized for being even more formulaic than rom-coms? Only so-called "chick-flicks" are judged this harshly for following the structure of their genre.) I wasn't expecting a masterpiece that would sweep the awards shows. I was looking for some fun, heartwarming entertainment, and this movie delivers. Jennifer Lopez is wonderful at physical comedy, and we saw another side of Alex O'Loughlin. Having only seen him in intense, brooding roles, I was surprised at how well he delivered in a comedy. As a bonus, we also got to enjoy Tom Bosley in his final role, a bittersweet moment for his fans.

Even though critics weren't kind in their reviews of this film, I loved it particularly the acting, which was authentic and superb. Alex O'Loughlin is a terrific leading man, and after seeing this film I was motivated to watch his "Moonlight" Series on DVD and start watching him on Hawaii 5-0. The only downside for me were the scenes in the support group, particularly the birthing scene. When I watch the film on DVD I skip through all scenes containing the support group. It's over-the-top stupid and offensive in my opinion and makes the difficulty of child birth seem like a joke. But the dog playing "Nuts" and the sweet romantic scenes make this film worth watching.

Very good fun. While Jennifer Lopez is the "star" of the movie, don't sell Alex O'Loughlin short. He REALLY makes this movie great! His reactions to the situation(s) is what truly makes this a great comedy. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.

I have very mixed reactions to writing a review for this movie. I did enjoy it despite its flaws. Would I have watched/bought it without Alex O'Loughlin in it? Definitely not. It had some funny moments and some really awful ones (that birthing scene could have been funny, but it was a bit much over-reacting or over-acting)?? Alex made a great, gorgeous leading man he does THE best love scenes with those bedroom eyes OMG. He also showed his flair for comedy and was a great foil for J-Lo's neurotic character oozing charm and patience. His scenes with the Dad of three kids playing in the park were really hilarious. J-Lo's leading men in these romantic comedies (like Ralph Fiennes in Maid in Manhattan) are always beautiful, charming and delightful actors all of whom make her look good. This is a wonderful, feel-good movie to watch repeatedly every now and then mostly to have the absolute indulgence of watching Alex on the big screen. I hope he gets more big-screen movie work in the very near future.

Immediate chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin.

Zoe a single New Yorker decided that at her age with no husband in sight she would have a baby. What she didn't count on was meeting the handsome and sexy, Stan.....Mr. Right. On top of their whirl win romance they found out Zoe was expecting twins.

Like every romance ups and down and so many sweet moments.

In one scene, Zoe and Stan are at a friends home while she was giving birth in a pool and I almost split from laughing so hard.

Zoe coming to terms with the past and wanting Stan in her life was fun, yet emotional at times. A great cast of characters in this film and a dog with "no legs" on a cart, you'll fall in love with!

Carnage (2011)

CarnageThis was a great and fun/funny film. A drama where two kids parents meet at ones apartment to decide "how to handle" the situation where one of the boys hit another boy with a stick, knocking out teeth. Who's fault was it? Who should apologize to whom? Should the parents get involved? Should they also take responsibility for their kids aggression and the others timidness? We learn the issue of aggression and short comings might be more so with the parents, than with the kids. And that poor hamster? A film by Roman Polanski, more so a short dinner theater type play brought to film. The shortest film I've seen in a theater. 1 hr 15 min. But great stars, fun plot. Things go from simple casual attempt(s) between two sets of parents with coming to an agreement concerning responsibility for their kids actions, to the parents engaged in something close to total WWIII. With a little apple cobbler tossed in (and up) along with way, plus way too many social cocktails in the mix. And a busy cell phone adding to the never ending comedy-drama.

With stars this wonderful, this film is a must see hit. And again... that poor hamster.

There are great court room dramas that keep you engaged. This is not a court room drama, but equal to such as a social drama between agreeing/disagreeing, then agreeing then back to disagreeing sets of parents.

With everyone carrying, then unloading, a lot of psychological baggage.

And YOU are the fly on the wall.

Great! Very fun! Interesting! Too short. I wanted more, a lot more. But what Roman Polanski gives us is totally worth experiencing.

Great directing mixed with great actors/acting really does make the difference.

NOTE: And just who was that peeking out the next door apartment at all the ruckus going on in the hall way? Could it have been by chance a VERY FAMOUS DIRECTOR's face????

And no... it wasn't Alfred Hitchcock. lol

What a good film. What good acting. Great stars. Great director. Great directing. But I'd totally skip the cobbler...

So what happens in NYC when parents of two boys decide to have a private meeting in order to resolve a conflict between their children? Meet two couples, who are equally concerned about well being of their 11 year old sons. Two boys got into a fight and the fight got physical. Before long, one boy is grounded and another one nearly looses his tooth. Surely, these young people need to be punished and thought a lesson; so their parents decide to meet and assess what to do next.

The entire movie is entirely set in a NYC apartment of one of the couples. It starts as civil and cordial meeting between two pairs of concerned parents and turns into, well carnage. In nearly two hours, we see these four people fighting it out with each other in words. It starts as one pair of parents against the other, but then lines become blurry as aliences between them start to shift. Every now and then, pairs would re-group, but then things would fall into a chaos again. It is witty, contemporary story about modern life, alienation between people, parents and their children; greed, glutony, assessment of our priorities and purpose in middle life. Great cast of actors, wonderful verbal duels. I truly enjoyed this movie. I always loved Roman Polanski's movies and this one adds to the wonderful collection of his already prized work.

Buy Carnage (2011) Now

"Carnage" opens like the play it is adapted from and is directed by Roman Polanski. Penelope Longstreet (Jodie Foster) along with husband Michael (John C. Reilly) invite the Cowans to their apartment; Nancy (Kate Winslet) and her work-consumed husband, Christoph Waltz.

The Longstreets feel it necessary to discuss the reason why their "victim" son was struck, and badly hurt, by the "maniac brutalizer" Cowan's son. Michael would simply appreciate an apology from their child, although Penelope seems to have her own agenda and intends to push it.

Penelope and Nancy have a tremendous amount of tension between them which is palpable from the onset. Michael appears personable, overly generous and friendly ... at first. Mr. Cowan is on the cell phone constantly as a pharmaceutical lawyer and much more absent in the genesis of the conversation.

The 'go-around' all plays out in the living room as you can sense the air suck right out of the room. It becomes almost claustrophobic, in feel, as the couples begin wildly talking, accusing, and definitely getting far off-the-topic of their sons.

In this obvious stress inducing situation, especially for Nancy and then Penelope, anxiety builds and the topics get verbally and emotionally out of control. The discussion of the children's situation is quickly set aside, as marital issues insidiously invade the 'conversation'. More like spouting-offs!

The husbands slowly get involved, by first defending their wives, arguing with each other and then challenging each other. The 'Scotch' comes on the scene, as they decide it would be a great time to take a vintage bottle out for a ride. Nancy demands a drink of her own, while defending Penelope, and challenges a reluctant Michael to pour his wife some also.

Alliances are formed and broken then reattached almost as fast as the mercurial, rapid-fire dialogue. The words are shot between them as bullets from a gun and land as caustically. The husbands start to turn on their wives while getting pretty frustrated; "you think too much...women think too much" and "yes, I feel like being completely despicable".

The talking and commenting becomes amazingly ludicrous in the verbal smack-down. All four actors are on top of their game in this; tightly wound, inflammatory, taut and hilarious 'study', as one topic is flying into another then back again.

At the very end of the film, before the credits roll, there is one of the best scenes for tying-up all the loose ends and a good shot in the arm of laughter for myself. It does put seemingly huge things in perspective in a very scant amount of time.

I though this was one of those slasher movies until I saw the names of the stars. This is actually very similar to the classic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Two-Disc Special Edition). All of the action takes place during one afternoon after a schoolyard fight between two boys leads to a meeting between both sets of parents to settle the tiff. Very different socially, the two couples at first perform the usual polite dance of parents everywhere, trying to remain polite and civil. A bottle of single-malt scotch, and some expensive cigars, lead to a loosening of social norms and shifting alliances among the group. I found this to be among the most intelligent films that I have seen in quite some time, especially since it is not an "art film" and is readily accessible to a mass audience. This is like attending a well done one act play right in your living room.

...despite his, er, private behavior, but gah! What awful people. Yes, it was funny in a very, very unpleasant way, but I think I watched it with an expression of horrified disgust pasted to my face. Don't we all know people like this? Completely tense, unable to stop the diarrhea of boring small talk about cobbler recipes and toilet parts while their restrained hostility growls audibly below the polite chatter? I felt like taking a hot bath after watching this. Yes, and becoming a hermit in a cave somewhere so I'd never have to see a human being again.

I will never, ever watch this movie again; it was like fingernails on a blackboard to me. And yet it was a great movie. I saw no flaw in the acting or direction. There was an ugly fascination in seeing how four people could all be arrogant bourgeois thugs, yet so different. Four different shades of awful.

I loved the hilarious irony of the scene in the park as the credits roll. You could almost miss it, but it beautifully sums up the ludicrousness of the situation that has just played out between the four adults.

Knock on Wood (1954)

Knock on WoodDanny Kaye is at his zaniest and best in the 1954 comedy Knock on Wood. Knock on Wood stars Danny Kaye and Mai Zetterling. Other actors in the film include Torin Thatcher, David Burns, and Leon Askin. The film was written and directed by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, with wonderful songs by Danny Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine.

Jerry Morgan (Kaye) is a ventriloquist who is having trouble with his love life: just when his relationship with his girlfriend gets around to marriage, his dummy turns jealous and spoils everything. Jerry's manager is so distraught; that he threatens to quit unless Jerry sees a psychiatrist, Enter Ilse Nordstrom, played by Zetterling, who tries to help Kaye find the source of his problem. The chemistry between Kaye and Zetterling throughout the movie is wonderful. The two of them eventually fall in love.

At the same time, Jerry becomes unwittingly mixed up with international spies, danger and intrigue, while he runs from the police. In his escape, Kaye does a funny impersonation of a British car salesman, trying to demonstrate a new convertible loaded with lots of bells and whistles. Later on, he finds himself trapped on stage in the middle of the performance of an exotic ballet. This is Danny Kaye at his best!

Danny Kaye has always been a family favorite, and this movie is a gem. Storyline has been well covered, so I won't go there. We have had it in VHS recorded from AMC years ago (back when they were American Movie Classics) and it has seen plenty of use. We are thrilled to have it in DVD format, but wish it had been a studio release with better treatment. As mentioned in another review, it is in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and there are no extras here, not even closed captioning.

In spite of all that, I am glad that it was released at all as a regular DVD (not DVD-R, as so many classics are these days). Some have mentioned their concern that it may be a bad transfer, as they saw in "Inspector General". I had a bad copy of that once (remember that it was in the public domain and people could get away with releasing it in any form of garbage) and this is a much better quality than that was, though not as sharp and crisp as if it had been digitally remastered.

If Paramount wasn't prepared to do anything with it, then I am grateful Olive Films at least made it available to us. I'd rather have this classic than not, even if it isn't as good as it possibly could be. The movie gets 5 stars, the DVD gets 4, so if I could average the package I would give it 4 1/2 stars.

Released before "The Court Jester", "Knock on Wood" ranks along with that aforementioned film as one of Danny Kaye's best movies. A classic which hasn't seen the light of day in ages, it is happily coming to DVD. As a ventriloquist caught up in intrigue with stunning Mai Zetterling (what a name!), fans can watch wide-eyed Danny try out funny dialects, double-talking dialogue and weasel in & out of danger as only Kaye could do it.

Those who've already seen all the classic comedy bits but have had to wait to see them again, rejoice; those who are being introduced to the film for the first time, you're in for a real treat!

I saw the movie as a young man, and have watched for a video these many years. Mai Zetterling was the prototype of the perfect woman who never chose me. I'm delighted to have the film back and like it as much as I did when Mai was a possibility, but I'm adding a mild cavil in light of the Bob Hope spy comedies of the same period with which it bears comparison, granting that the Hopes tend to be black & white and comedy-weighted against the Kayes' Technicolor and songs. (I ordered "Knock on Wood" in a package with "My Favorite Spy.")

While Bob sings on occasion, and in character, it doesn't impede the flow of the action, whereas when Danny does so in this and other of his films (notably "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"; "The Court Jester" is an exception since the songs are appropriately placed) things come to a halt for several minutes and we're reminded that we're watching a performance by Danny Kaye before the story resumes. The "ballet" sequence also seemed needlessly prolonged; Hope's work rarely lags.

The late Virginia Mayo suggested in a memoir that, for a young actress, Hope was a greater pleasure to work with than Kaye, which may have been because of the absolute control Sylvia Fine appears to have exercised over her husband's career. Whatever the case may be, I'm confident you'll enjoy "Knock on Wood" as much as I did and will again.

I saw this movie when it was released in what seems a long time ago now. The song that Danny sang in the Tap Dancing scene stayed in my memory and the scene with him under the table had me hysterical when I first saw it. I bought the DVD as sort of nostalgia but my wife and I still had a good laugh when we watched it together. I always thought of it as one of Danny's classics.

Taint, The (Blu-ray + DVD Combo) (2010)

Taint, TheI actually purchased THE TAINT before the film was signed over to Troma, snagged it for $5 and I would have easily paid twice that after seeing it. When this release was announced on Troma, I immediately put in my pre-order. I had to order the Blu-ray for this hilarious little indie production. Sure, I own 3 copies of this film now...it's just that fun.

THE TAINT is gory, offensive and laugh-out-loud funny. If your idea of entertainment is crude jokes, rubber genitals, exploding heads (see rubber genitals), more exploding heads, an amazing '80's style work-out montage, a wild face-ripping and an insane concept matched only by BLACK DYNAMITE's. Everything about this film is fun, from the gorgeous artwork to the impressive original synth score. This is what GOOD indie genre cinema is all about.

The Taint is an independent film from Richmond Virginia made by Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson and some of their friends and other actors. It's a hilarious horror comedy about a penis enlarger medicine that gets released into the water system. And if a male drinks the water he turns into a misogynistic maniac trying to murder as many women as he can. One man Phil O Genny Hasn't yet drank the water and is the only one who has a chance of surviving the terrible condition of becoming a raging misogynistic person. This is an amazing cult feature with allot of funny scenes and allot of great gore and I'm glad Troma bought it . It is one of my favorite movies of all time and it's a great horror movie.

In recent years, the trend of grindhouse revivalism has spread like wildfire throughout the fringes of the film industry. It seems like, since the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez anthology film "Grindhouse" brought the term, and the style, back into view, contemporary takes on the cheesy, over-the-top spectacle of the midnite-movie fare of the 1970s and 80s have begun popping up with an increased frequency. This new crop of grindhouse features differs from the old guard--low-budget limitations have been augmented by a deliberate tongue-in-cheek attitude, a knowing irony that deconstructs the style as it lovingly pays homage. Sometimes, this knowing irony falls flat, becoming too self-aware and too self-referential to be funny--but in the best cases, it only improves the film in question, adding a deep dimension of comedy to the surface, creating greater capacity for laughs and spectacle than even the heights of the style's original peak period.

The Taint, directed by Dan Nelson and Drew Bolduc and distributed by Troma Entertainment, is a great representation of when this type of film is done right. With a plot that lends itself to untold hilarious possibilities (it envisions a society in which men have turned into twisted, misogynistic barbarians by way of a taint in the water supply,) some very clever writing, deliberately over-the-top scenarios, and aesthetic sensibilities that update the exploitation-shockers of old without appearing trite or handed-down, The Taint is an incredibly solid seventy minutes of tight, campy fun. It has humor that's as dirty as it is clever, imagery that's as shocking as it is hysterical, practical effects that amaze with their ingenuity, and an atmosphere that stays fresh and original even while putting its influences on display. With appropriately-tasteless male nudity, and plenty of blood and guts on display, it's certainly not for the faint-of-heart, but for lovers of modern grindhouse reinventions along the lines of Hanger, Hobo With a Shotgun or Father's Day, it's definitely a treat to watch.

As is typical with Troma releases, the package is well put-together beyond just the feature itself. The package, which comes with both DVD and Blu-Ray copies of the film, is adorned with beautiful cover art, and makes a great shelf-piece for collectors. There are also plenty of special features to enjoy after the film is over, including some great deleted scenes, commentary tracks from the directors and the cast, behind-the-scenes photos, and several trailers. Everything is crisp and pleasing to look at, and while the sound in the main feature is occasionally inconsistent, it's better than one might expect for a low-budget film. Troma has spared no effort in putting this package together, and it absolutely shows. It may not appeal to most viewers out there, but if you're looking for some tasteless schlock that's surprisingly intelligent and extremely funny, The Taint comes highly recommended.

Read Best Reviews of Taint, The (Blu-ray + DVD Combo) (2010) Here

"The Taint" is 70 minutes of pure unbridled, gory, reprehensible trash that also happens to be quite clever and a lot smarter than you might expect. When I first heard about this low budget independant Richmond Virginia lensed film and checked out some positive review around the internet, one particular quote from the Fangoria.com review stated "The Taint is exactly what happens when smart filmmakers intentionally make a stupid movie." The basic plot involves an experimental penis enlargement drug that turns men into oversexed misogynistic maniacs is unleashed into the public water supply and all manners of depravity cut loose.

Considering how miniscule the bidget was, it's actually made well from a craft standpoint with the over the top gore being quite hilarious and impressive in many spaces. As I mention at the ouset of this review, the run time is just barely over 70 minutes with end credits so the movie doesn't overstay its welcome at all. It's very obvious why Troma picked the film up for distribution due to the copius amounts of male nudity, gore, bodily fluids flying about and extremely warped and politically incorrect sense of humor that permeates every moment of the film. Women may find this movie to be unwatchable but should recognize it as well done satire that isn't meant to be taking at face value at all.

It's exploitation filmmaking at a highly enjoyable level that should prove to be a huge hit among brave cinephiles that like their trash cinema to be a complete assault on good taste and decency while also exhibiting a level of talent and craft that makes me very interested in what the filmmakers plan on doing next.

The blu-ray DVD combo pack from Troma presents the movie in excellent 1.78 anamorphic widescreen that is very clean and detailed particularly on the blu-ray edition. The audio is regular 2 channel lossy stereo but everything sounds fine. Extras include two commentary tracks, some deleted scenes, a behind the scenes slide show and the usual Troma trailers too.

De Dana Dan (Comedy Hindi Film / Bollywood Movie / Indian Cinema) (2009)

De Dana Dant has some of the funniest scenes in a movie this year. Akshay needed more scenes in the 2nd half, but he did quite well. Suniel was okay. Paresh was funny and loud. Kat had no scope, same with Sameer. Neha acted well. Johnny was amazing, this movie belongs to him.

What I liked about the movie:

Akshay, Johnny, Paresh, Neha, climax, songs

What I didn't like about the movie:

Weak story, Akshay needed more scenes

Would you recommend this movie to your friend: Yes

User Movie Rating: 3/5

This movie has funny moments and really good songs, but the story line was very confusing to follow. There is so much going on and lots of people involved and it took me a couple times of watching in order to understand what was happening.

De Dana Dan is an unpretentious movie of the slap stick variety and desperately wants to entertain its audience but despite having Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, the trio who were so funny in Hera Pheri fails. De Dana Dan is about a kidnapping of a dog. Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty decide to kidnap a dog which belongs to Akshay's boss and demand a ransom. The ransom is to be delivered at a hotel where a host of other characters have embarked for a wedding. As it would, identities are confused and chaos ensues. This identity chaos was hilarious in Hungaama and Hera Pheri but just does not work in this film. There are too many characters and they don't have any chemistry because the writing is poor. I love pedestrian and corny comedies but hated this one. One star for this mess. 2.8.11

I wish I could have given this movie less than half a star, but unfortunately this is not an option. Please skip this movie if you hate to see water wasted, shamelessly wasted by a group of actors who will do anything for money. This is one mess of a film; it's a mixture of bad dialogue, misplaced loyalties, confusion between families, mistaken identities, and the worst usage of water I have ever seen. It is made equally shameless when these very same actors stand in front of audiences and talk about Global Warming and other issues pertinent to India, especially the issue of water. What a bunch of pathetic hypocrites! It pains me to see the talents of actors like Rajpal Yadev and Paresh Rawel wasted in this horrendous display of acting. Now, I will admit there are moments in the film that are funny. But it goes without saying that 99% of the actors in this film can't act and are not worth watching. Did I mention that it is also very long and monotonous?
