Juno (Special Edition + Digital Copy) (2007)

JunoTeenage pregnancy is frequently a starting point for myriad philosophical arguments: some see it as a major problem, some see it as an argument for the need of early teaching of contraceptive technique and sex education, some see it as a reason for championing abortion, and some see it as a piece of life that confronts families in both positive and negative ways. JUNO is a beautifully written (Diablo Cody) and directed (Jason Reitman) version of unplanned pregnancy offered by a splendid ensemble cast: it is a movie that could modify the sociologic outlook of many people in a very strong fashion.

Juno (Ellen Page) is sixteen and talks her best friend Bleek (Michael Cera) into having sex: the result is a surprise pregnancy that Juno shares with her girlfriend Leah (Olivia Thirley) and the store clerk Rollo (Rainn Wilson) even before informing Bleek, a likable kid who seems fairly flat about the situation. After discarding abortion as a viable solution, Juno informs her father (JK Simmons) and stepmother (Allison Janney) of her status, and tells them she is going to complete the pregnancy and give the baby to some loving and needy barren couple. Her parents are at first flustered by the news, but quickly become supportive in a way that tells us many things about the durability of successful families. With Leah's help, Juno answers an ad for 'wanted: baby' in PennySaver and visits the Lorings (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) who desperately want a child and embrace Juno's gesture of adoption with eager excitement. The remainder of the film follows Juno as her abdomen increases in girth, finding new respect for her parents and for Bleek, and inadvertently walking in the troubled waters of the Loring's marital discord. Without giving the story away, the ending is so tender and free of cliché that it allows us, the audience, to appreciate all the vigor and sensitivity and humor and warmth of Juno an example of developing maturity that is a fresh breeze compared to the usual teenage movies.

Ellen Page does indeed deliver a pitch perfect performance, but her co-stars are equally fine: Simmons and Janney break away from their usual type cast roles brilliantly, and the other members of the cast (the entire cast) flesh out this well written story with great skill. The mixture of animated graphics and the imaginative musical score enhance the flavor of the tale. JUNO offers an unbiased look at the topic of teenage pregnancy and wins on every level. Grady Harp, April 08

Juno was Little Miss Sunshine of 2007 the little independent film that could. Once the studio realized that it had a successful crowd-pleaser on its hands, the film was promoted from the art-house circuit to the multiplexes. Actress Ellen Page and first-time screenwriter Diablo Cody became the film's breakout stars garnering the lion's share of critical raves and awards with Page getting an Independent Spirit Award and Cody an Academy Award. Now that all of the dust has settled, Juno can be reassessed to see if it really has the staying power and substance to cut through all of the hype and stand-up to the inevitable backlash.

There is an audio commentary by director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody. The first thing that you notice when listening to Cody talking is how well Ellen Page mimicked her way of speaking. Reitman tends to dominate the track and, not surprisingly, talks about filmmaking aspects like the casting of minor roles, the attention to details for the sets, how he shot certain scenes, and so on. This is pretty decent track filled with lots of anecdotal stories and production details.

Also included are 11 deleted scenes with optional commentary by Reitman and Cody. We meet Juno's crazy next-door neighbour. There's also a different introduction to Juno's family. We see Mark and Vanessa's first attempt to adopt. There's also an amusing bit where Juno has a solo gig and sings a song about getting pregnant. These are all good scenes and Reitman explains why there were cut.

There is the obligatory "Gag Reel," a hilarious collection of blown lines and goofs with Bateman making Page break character time and time again.

The "Gag Take" is an odd scene where Rainn Wilson and Reitman get into it with a mock heated argument.

"Cast and Crew Jam" features the cast and crew members rockin' out to a song in this mock music video.

There are "Screen Tests" for Ellen Page and Michael Cera. In the scene they do together you already see them in character and displaying excellent chemistry. There is also a test with Page and Olivia Thirlby and one with Page and J.K. Simmons as well.

"Way Beyond `Our' Maturity Level" takes a look at the characters of Bleeker, Juno and her best friend Leah with interviews with the actors that inhabit them. Diablo Cody talks about how they are based on people in her life.

"Diablo Cody is Totally Boss" is a profile of this novice screenwriter who got her start writing a blog and got noticed by a film producer. Reitman recalls his initial impressions of the script and the cast gush about its "unique voice."

"Jason Reitman for Shizz" takes a look at the director. The producers gush about how he was the right fit for the material. He talks about establishing the right tone and how he shared the same vision for the film as Cody.

"Honest to Blog!: Creating Juno" features Cody and Reitman talking about how the film came together. She credits her stylized dialogue to spending lots of time on the Internet. Cody also talks about how she came up with the idea for the story. They talk about specific scenes and her knack for depicting an unconventional family.

Juno a teen who becomes pregnant by her friend and decides to give up the baby for adoption to a lovely couple or does she change her mind. I reccomend all teens to see this, not to get the idea to just go out and have sex to so call (get a baby) but let the teen see what Juno has to go through on her own being pregnant without the baby's father having anything to do with her or the child. It happens all the time in the world we live in. Being puzzled about how it was going to end....Well I wont give the ending away you just need to view it for yourself. This movie is a serious subject, but has humor by Juno. I was happy to have purchased this myself. Ellen Page (Juno) a rising actress. Through friendship and pregnancy, there is a bond of LOVE forever.

Obviously by now everyone has heard the hype surrounding this movie. Unfortunately, the hype has assisted my lukewarm rating of this movie. A scant three minutes into the movie and one has to wonder how Diablo Cody won an Oscar for writing such fake dialogue.

The lead character, Juno, is in a pharmacy purchasing a pregnancy test. Her interaction with the clerk was the stuff you can only find in a movie. No one talks like they do. The clerk and Juno both spoke like they were from another planet. Unfortunately, we're subjected to little more than this type of dialogue for the first two thirds of the movie. It was as though Diablo Cody watched Quentin Tarantino movies and then decided to try her hand at writing sarcastic, quick-witted banter. She has a very long way to go. One-liners don't make for conversation.

I feel that most of the hype about the writing was due to the fact that it was different. Not that it was really good, but because it is different than typical Hollywood fare. Different doesn't equal good here. Nothing is more ridiculous than when, upon being told by Juno that she is pregnant, her father comments that he didn't think the boy who knocked her up "had it in him". The ho-hum manner that everyone takes to the situation is very unrealistic and distracts from the story. No one seems to take the matter seriously. Not her father, not the boy's family, not the boy, and not Juno herself.

So how did I end up giving this movie three stars rather than one? Well, the story found its way in the last half hour. I found Little Miss Sunshine to be like this as well. Most of the movie was rather dull, but the ending was so good that it made up for the rest. Juno has a similar quality. We finally see resemblence of humanity when Juno finds out the perfect couple she chose to adopt her baby aren't the perfect couple she thought they were. We finally see some realistic interaction between father and daughter. We see a woman who cannot have her own children distressed over the uncertainty of the adoption process. You can feel her uneasiness. After Juno gives birth, her boyfriend visits her in the hospital and there is a real tender scene between them. Alas we see Juno as a vulnerable child having to deal with the weight of having a baby and giving it up. I found the final scene to be rather charming as Juno and her boyfriend sit and play guitars and sing a tune together. It's still unrealistic, but nevertheless it was a nice finish.

There are better movies about intelligent, self-aware, teenage girls who struggle as misfits to find their calling. One that comes to mind that is better written and superbly executed is Ghost World. It stars Thora Birtch, Scarlett Johansson, and Steve Buscemi. The movie isn't for everyone, but if you're interested in a Juno-type movie, Ghost World is far superior. Ghost World

Big Momma's House (2000)

Big Momma's HouseThe biggest problem with Big Momma's house is that you can often see just how funny it should be, but the cast and crew are not able to sustain the occasional hilarious parts with any consistency.

It doesn't seem to help that Big Momma's House wants to be more than a comedy. Writers Darryl Quarles and Don Rhymer shoot for a combination of a crime comedy ala Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and a romantic comedy. But the core comedy is absurdist, while the mostly serious crime stuff is so underwritten that it would be better absent, and the somewhat serious rom-com stuff is so generic and predictable that it has all the surprise of attending Mass.

To me, the comedy being absurdist is a plus, but it doesn't mesh well with other modes. It's ridiculous, of course, that Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) is trying to pass himself off as "Big Momma" Hattie Mae Pierce (Ella Mitchell). That's a large part of what makes it funny. However, director Raja Gosnell's decision to play the rest of the cast as mostly deadpan is a strange one. It leads the viewer to take the film in a more realist mode, but if you're doing that, you keep asking yourself why anyone else would believe that Turner is actually Big Momma. Gosnell should have gone for another approach during the Turner as Big Momma scenes. It's not that they're never funny, but too often the deadpan interaction breaks the humor.

However, the deadpan attitude works wonders when Mitchell is Big Momma. Mitchell is a fantastic here as a comic actress and especially Paul Giamatti as John is hilarious interacting with her. Once those too-brief scenes ended, I was wishing they wouldn't have, and when they reappeared again at the end, it made me more fully realize how much better they were. A whole film could have and should have been written around Mitchell as Big Momma with Giamatti and Lawrence interacting with her and beautiful co-star Nia Long via some other story.

Even with these problems, Big Momma is an enjoyable film. My wife enjoyed it even more than I did, we're looking forward to watching Big Momma's House 2, and we'll certainly watch this again in the future. But it's a case of moments of brilliance poking through so that you see just how much better it could have been.

Blue Streak was a suprise hit to me last fall, Big Momma's House suprised me this summer. I laughed my astrodynamics off watching Martin Lawrence dress up as BIG MOMMA (A 60 year old 400 pound lady) Not only was this a super funny movie, but a great story and excellent chemistry between Nia Long and Martin. Paul Giamatti, playing Lawrences FBI partner, is just as funny as Martin when given the chance. A few scenes stick out in mind like when BIG MOMMA (lawrence) take self defense class and when BIG MOMMA dunks over two other guys heads. Non-stop laughing in this one, go check it out--you're sure to like it. --Star Wars on DVD- Come on Lucas!

Again, Martin Lawrence proves himself a Poor Man's Eddie Murphy with this Witless Effort. A Lame Script, Bad Direction and Actors who constantly look like they've just woken up, give this film a very "Couldn't be Bothered" feeling.

Take a Pinch of "Mrs Doubtfire", a Dash of "Stakeout" and filter out the Action and Comedy. That'll give a Pretty Good Estimation of the Entertainment in store for the Unlucky Viewer.

The One Saving Grace (and the reason for 2 stars instead of 1) is Anthony Anderson, who plays a Wannabe Cop who helps Lawrence out. He makes every piece of Poorly Written Dialogue he has seem like it was written by Neil Simon.

Only Die Hard Lawrence fans need apply, anyone not fitting that description should Spend their hard earned money elsewhere.

I'm not usually a fan of movies in this genre, but Big Momma's House is not as bad a diversion as some might have you believe. If you've ever witnessed someone doing or saying something so stupid, low and crass that you had to laugh in spite of yourself, then this movie fits the bill. One of the strongest draws of this movie is its unusually strong cast of talented actors, who make the most out of what they are given. Like most comedies in this vein, you have to suspend your disbelief much of the time: the plot of this situational comedy is highly improbable, but sometimes quite funny. Martin Lawrence won't make you forget Eddie Murphy's star turn in the First "Nutty Professor" remake, but he does have some surprisingly amusing moments impersonating "Big Momma" while in pursuit of a criminal who is on the lam. Nia Long, his love interest, is as cool and ravishing as ever. Ella Mitchell gamely plays the real Big Momma and, best of all, Anthony Anderson is uproariously funny as a bumbling security guard who moonlights giving self-defense classes to elderly women in the neighborhood community center. As most reviewers here have indicated, "Big Momma's House" is definitely not worth agonizing about. It's the film equivalent of pleasantly disposable junk food. It could have been much worse.

Rapture-Palooza (2013)

Rapture-PaloozaOkay, I can tell from different comical reviews of other films and works that someone is gonna get mad about the plot or the inappropriate jokes. I am here to say if you are looking to get enlightened or find some sort deep meaning behind this film; go back now.

Anyway, I thought this movie was hilarious! I like it when comedic movies own up to their "R" rating. (I'm weird. I know.) It was funny, but also visually stunning and I thought that was great. Also, I have to give props to the music department for the music choice. It most definitely didn't hurt that it had a few comedic actors in the film as well. I think every actor/actress as well as the team for this film did a great job. I would put more of a review here, but I don't like telling people about spoilers, sorry.

This story centers around Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) who has caught the eye of the portly foul-mouthed Anti-Christ (Craig Robinson) who prefers to be called "The Beast." Her complaining mother has returned from heaven, having been kicked out of the rapture.

The idea was clever, especially how man learns to calmly deal with the various plagues thrown his way. I enjoyed the Maddow joke as well as the "fowl-mouthed" crows. The humor was spotty. The jokes were rather lame and juvenile. The writers came up with a half decent plot but couldn't execute on dialouge, which made the actors look bad. It has the stupidity and language of a teen sex comedy that misses the mark.

Might make it as a low brow rental.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity. Sex talk.

Not quite as good as I was expecting. It had some funny moments (the crows and the locusts were humorous), but overall, it was all over the place. Craig Robinson was trying, but Kendrick and Daley were just sleep walking through it.

I actually really liked this movie. I usually hate dumb humor, but for some reason this movie made me laugh more than once. It's pretty crude, but funny!

Want Rapture-Palooza (2013) Discount?

Craig Robinson stars in two movies about the end of the world. One of those movies is funny, over-the-top and entertaining and the other not so much. Guess which film this is?

It's the end of the world as we know it and the faithful have been taken to Heaven while the rest of the world has to suffer through periodic meteroites and the anti-Christ (Robinson). When the anti-Christ falls for Lindsay (Anna Kendrick) he gives her an ultimatium; marry him or watch her entire family be killed. It falls to the secular Lindsey and her boyfriend (John Francis Daley) to reluctantly save the world by getting rid of the anti-Christ.

Written by Chris Matheson (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure [Blu-ray]), "Rapture-Palooza" has a terrific premise and great performers in a variety of supporting roles but never catches fire. The humor is lame and juvenile failing to deliver on the terrific premise. It doesn't help that director Paul Middleditch can't stage comedy effectively. The actors are game and most of the appeal of the film is due to their performances.

If you're curious, I'd suggest a rental otherwise avoid.

Live at the Royal Albert Hall

Live at the Royal Albert HallI'm a huge Minchin fan. I've watched and/or listened to everything he's published. I own all the albums and videos, and this is my favorite of all of them.

There's tons of fresh material not to be found in his other released works, or even at his typical touring set, at least through 2010 and 2011 shows. It's slick, well-produced, and near technically flawless. And of course seeing Tim with one of the world's finest symphony orchestras is outstanding fun.

I am not sure about the Blu Ray region. I have an American PS3 (Region A), and it plays for me without any problem.

I bought this Blue Ray for my father who loves Tim Minchin, seriously I once saw him sit at his computer for 5 hours watching Tim Minchin on Youtube. This is a UK only release so I was worried it might not play on his BluRay player, but oddly enough it worked fine without any issues at all.

Battle Girls Time Paradox: Complete Collection (2013)

Battle Girls Time Paradox: Complete CollectionHideyoshi is a lazy middle school girl. One day she is taken away to a parallel universe inhabited only by women. She meets a warrior named Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga is after the pieces of a legendary set of armor. It is said that whoever obtains the armor will conquer the world. Hideyoshi gets involved with Nobunaga and tags along with her on the quest to unite the country.

This anime was a big disappointment for me. The first thing that bothered me was the main character. She is dumb, annoying, and whiny. Brittney Karbowski voices her, and she's very hard to listen to. Normally, Brittney Karbowski does a good job most of the time, but her character in this is whiny, shrill, and barley tolerable. She's a far cry from Icaros in Heaven's Lost Property or Ayu from Kanon.

The story is pretty mush a waste. Nothing really happens in this series. There are a few decent fights, but most of this anime is just fluff. The battle at the end, that was supposed to be the climax, is a major let down. Most of the voice actors, the animation, and the soundtrack are all pretty good. That's all it has going for it. Good production quality. It's a shame that Sentai sees fit to dub half baked shows like this and produce excellent shows without dubbing them. If you're looking for fan service and yuri, this anime has it. If you want good characters and a interesting story, look somewhere else. I can't recommend this anime to anyone. It simply a waste of time.

R.I.P.D. (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2013)

R.I.P.D."Un-dead police officers?" Really? C'mon! This PG-13 action-fest once again had me scanning my mental Thesaurus... Absurd? Ludicrous? Preposterous? Ridiculous? Outrageous? Goofy? Hilarious? I think you get the picture. If you've seen the ads you know a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers in the Rest In Peace Department.

This goofy comedy, written by Phil Hay/Matt Manfridi ("Clash of the Titans") and directed by Robert Schwentke ("Red") is a sure-fire winner, full of action, comedy and Computer Generated Imaging. I freely admit that there were times things got too, too silly and my interest faltered, but then the story rallied again.

We watch:

* Jeff Bridges ("Hearts of the West") is Roy, wearing a Buffalo Bill beard and mumbling like he has a lower lip full of chewing tobacco; he's an old-time lawman on the third sixty-year extension of his assignment.

* Marisa Miller (Victoria's Secret model) in her slinky gold dress, is Roy's avatar when he walks among us.

* Ryan Reynolds ("Chaos Theory") is Nick, slain by his trusted partner and stunned by this new turn of events. He quickly adjusts to the idea that he can't be killed any more, at least THAT is a relief!

* James Hong ("Safe") is Nick's avatar.

* Mary Louise Parker ("Red") is Proctor, the R.I.P.D. orientation officer in her short black uniform and white knee-length go-go boots...she made me think of Diana Rigg.

* Kevin Bacon ("Frost/Nixon") is Officer Hayes, ready and willing to comfort his partner's widow.

The CGI technicians had a blast and the audience saw blowie uppie stuff galore! Our poor heroes are really up against big-time trouble: Global Warming, the Black Plague and bad cell-phone reception. At least Amazon will tell us when the DVD is available.

I'll say right up front I've never seen a Men in Black movie (Will Smith leaves me VERY cold as an actor) so I don't know nor do I care if this film is similar (how many 'Hangover' type films have come out in the last few years, several of which are as good or better than the original?) but this film was quite enjoyable. Jeff Bridges is a hoot! Mary Louise Parker and he work so well together that I wish the movie had actually centered around them. Not to say that Ryan Reynolds isn't good here but there a reason he hasn't become the big star that many folks thought he would after The Proposal. He just doesn't bring enough depth to a role. I liked the humor and the silly plot didn't bother me a bit. Kevin Bacon role seems a bit slight but Bacon is a very good actor who's had many underwritten roles and he knows how to overcome them. I wish James Hong and Marisa Miller's roles had been a bit expanded but the notion behind their roles is a pretty good one. This isn't a great film but it's a pretty good way to spend an hour and a half. I hope Bridges and Parker team up again soon in another movie. Recommended.

This movie will not win any Oscars, I would guess, but it's a heck of a lot of fun.

Jeff Bridges was great, and It's nice to see a female star who is played as just smart, attractive and solidly in control rather than a brainless bimbo.

Ryan Reynolds does a solid job too. Great special effects.

I'd say a cross between Dead Like me and Men In Black.

Don't listen to the critics, this film was a blast to watch.

This movie is only pretty good because it is pretty predictable and isn't totally appropriate for kids. I did like it though because it has a ton of action and suspense. This movie is also 3-D which makes it even cooler because of all the action scenes.

This movie is about a guy named Nick (Ryan Rey6nolds) who has a good wife and works for the police department. He also has a good partner (he thinks) until his partner wants the gold that Nick has so he kills him. Nick then works for the Rest in Peace Department and he is paired with a new partner named Roy (Jeff Bridges) who is a cowboy. Nick and Roy have to save the world from a guy named Hayes (Kevin Bacon) who is going to build something to bring the dead back to life!

The main characters in this movie are Nick, Roy, Hayes and Julia. My favorite character is Roy because he is really cool, good at fighting and hilarious! He is so funny and is just a really weird guy. He does some things you wouldn't think he might do and it makes everyone laugh.

My favorite part in the movie is when a big fat guy gets shot in the butt with a grappling hook by Roy. He was flinging him all around and trying to kill the bad person that's technically already dead. I just thought it was really funny.

I would recommend this movie for ages 10 and up because there is a lot of violence in this movie and it's rated PG-13. It also has some stereotypes that might not be the best message for kids. All in all it was pretty funny as long as you realize that is what it is meant to be a comedy. Reviewed by Anthony A, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic. For more film reviews, go to kidsfirst.org

Good Morning, Vietnam (25th Anniversary Edition) (1987)

Good Morning, VietnamMany have tried to dismiss this film as nothing more than a comedic vehicle for Robin Williams. The concept of making light of the horrors of war, particularily Vietnam since it's still so recent in the minds of many turns alot of viewers off to the important potential lessons to be learned in this wonderfully insightful movie.

Based on the true life accounts of Air Force officer and D.J. Adrian Cronauer we get a birds' eye view into the strict and ridiculous bureaucracy that can at times reign over military policy and in effect hamper the morale and efforts of the American military.

Cronauer provided a much needed spontaneity to the air waves of Vietnam radio and brought however briefly to the American soldiers the contemporary music they wanted to hear. There is alot to laugh at in this film, what else could you expect with the likes of Robin Williams in the lead role. However there is much more going on than what first meets the eye. The concepts of acceptance, friendship, trust and love soon become entangled into the comedic elements which lead to the sad and poignant realization that cultural differences can't always be overcome by good intentions. A bittersweet truth so poignantly conveyed by the beautiful Trinh when rebuffing the romantic advances of Cronauer with the statement, "Vietnam ladies not friends."

This film will definitely make you laugh. It will also make you cry and even more importantly make you think. In the final analysis that's what it's all about. There are many wonderful performances in this movie complimenting Robin Williams amazing tour-de-force. My two favorites are Tung Than Tran as 'Phan' and Chintara Sukapatana as 'Trinh.'

Highly Recommended!!

This review refers to "Good Morning Vietnam"(VHS/Touchstone)

The V.P., a V.I.P., the P.C., on the Q.T, the V.C, MIA and K.P.

Who else can take all these initials, string them into one sentence and have us in hysterics. Only Robin Williams. The one liners are fast and non stop. He's absolutely perfect as he portrays the real life Adrian Cronauer, an armed forces DJ who shakes things up a bit in Saigon 1965.

Cronauer is a hip DJ, who tries to the chagrin of his lieutanant, to bring a little fun into the lives of the weary soldiers in Viet Nam. He livens up the base and surrounding Saigon with funny characters, absurd news stories(the real ones are edited), and some Rock and Roll, as the Vietnam War occurs around them. The Lt. is more of a Lawrence Welk/Jim Nabors kind of a guy and is appalled at this DJ's style. But nothing can stop this wild and crazy guy from his mission. The script is rollicking good fun, and of course all that great music from the 60's is on tap. But there are poignant moments and a serious nature to this film as well. The war still goes on, and for the people of Saigon it is tragic. As Cronauer finds out when he befriends the townspeople.

Williams' immense talent explodes in this film. He is both funny and compassionate. But he is not alone in making this film the classic it has become. It is directed by the brillant Barry Levinson(Rain Man/The Natural),who always knows how to pull us into a story and keep us there. The supporting cast is marvelous and play right to Williams. It includes the wonderful character

actor Noble Willingham, Bruno Kirby,Forest Whitaker, Robert Wuhl and I must also make mention of Tung Thanh Tran, who plays Tuan/aka Phan Duc To.

A story of Vietnam like no other. It's one I can pull out and watch anytime without tiring of it. The VHS is a good quality. It has nice picture and hi-fi Stereo sound. It has closed captioned for hearing impaired as well. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it again, and remember why you liked it so much the first time around. For those that have not seen it, you

are in for a real treat.

Thanks and enjoy...Laurie

Robin Williams is exceptional (as usual) as the controversial radio disc-jockey Adrian Cronauer who is sent to Vietnam during the war to lift the military morale with his special brand of on-air banter. Cronauer's improvised, lightning-speed monologues keep getting him into strife with his superiors, yet are adored by the soldiers who avidly listen to him. While stationed in the war-torn country, Cronauer meets and gets to know some of the locals intimately, and learns about the catastrophes and disasters that lie beneath the airwaves through which his flippantly humourous broadcasts are transmitted.

Cronauer's radio persona is an accurate mirror of Williams himself, yet he also portrays well the man who becomes more human and vulnerable as a result of his exposure to the situation in his new environment.

GMV is both side-splittingly hilarious, touching and at times devastating, as we witness the horrors of war contrasted against the light-hearted satirical entertainment of Cronauer's on-air speeches. There has also never been a more ironic use of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" than here, played as a background to a heartbreaking montage of tragic images.

The soundtrack is also excellent, blending some appropriately upbeat period tunes with snippets of Williams funniest monologues.

Most poeople will have seen this film on video and tv and enjoyed it, some of you old folks may have even seen it at the cinema. I think that this is a great film and it belongs in my favourite collection.

A lot of reviews here talk about the film so I wont. I just bought the DVD and watched it, although I have the video as well.

The picture quality was bad, fuzzy and grainy in many places, and I mean the picture, not the mpeg compression.

It was possible in quite a few places to see the mpeg rings. The sound was average, not brilliant but not poor.

There are no real extra features to talk about.

So given that this movie has a great following in many countries I would have expected the DVD conversion crew to have done a much better job.

With no extras and not been a really long film there is no reason to allow compression rings to be visible, where they are visible the conversion people just have to lower the compression rate for that part, and us the viewers would never know.

It appears that all they did was to copy the old movie onto a DVD without any effort, knowing that many people will buy the DVD. I think that the video copy I have matches the DVD for picture quality, not for sound of course.

If you have Good Morning Vietnam on video treasure it and save yourself £15 ($20). Maybe in the future a 'special' anniversary edition will be released that the producers will have invested both time and money in to give us a DVD worth buying, of course they could just release it again as is for all us muggs to be ripped off again.

National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus (2011)

National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest MaximusThe movie is primarily a spoof of "Troy" but tosses in some other film bits for good measure. Will Sasso stars as the blue collar Awesomest Maximus, legendary general of Troy. His wife, Hottessa (Kristanna Loken) is the princess. Her brother is named Orlando instead of Paris (Gary Lundy) who is gay. He absconds with Ellen of Troy (Sophia Monk) in order to make the King of Greece jealous. Ian Ziering plays Testiclees in the manner of Brad Pitt. His incestuous mother looks like Angelina Jolie from "Alexander." I think you get the idea of the satire.

When the movie is not spoofing other movies, the humor is overly sexual. When you divide National Lampoon films into classics and not so classics, this falls below the line. If you enjoyed the film "Your Highness" you might try this one too.

F-bomb, sex, nudity (background strippers mostly, no stars)

I was high when I saw this on TV a few days ago. I'm not sure if I overanalyzed the movie because I was high, but it seemed like every single scene took the dialogue way past the point of relevance. Each character would go off into a rant about something that otherwise might seem stupid, but I thorougly enjoyed the movie being in the state of mind that I was in. Kind of like "House Of Payne", it's stupid unless you're under the influence of something. I loved MadTV, so it was nice to see Will Sasso. This is much better than the 3 Stooges movie he was just in if you're wondering.

I recommend watching it, but don't expect much.

This movie puts forth the same humor that originally made national lampoon so great in the beginning. I can't even look at the Dvd case without giggling.

That Thing You Do! (1996)

That Thing You Do!Last week, I saw "That Thing You Do!" on one of the cable movie channels. I had not seen it for a while and had a couple of hours staring me down, so I sat back and watched it. The film itself is a nice piece of work by Mr. Hanks. He did himself proud. And that song! What a catchy, get-under-your-skin-in-your-brain pop tune!

Then, two days later, I was in Best Buy (humming That Thing You Do, by the way) and this new edition DVD appears before me unexpectedly, on sale. Without thinking, I bought it, took it home and I have watched it three times since (the theatrical release, once and the extended version, twice) and I will watch many times more.

This new release of That Thing You Do! underscores why "The Director's Cut" genre in DVD releases has become so invaluable to film aficionados like myself.

The theatrical version is priceless (still), but the "Director's Cut" is incredible and a major revelation. So many gaps in the plot have been filled in (gaps that I wasn't even aware of, so well put-together was the original version). This newer version has made the film a mini-masterpiece.

As in the original, the cast is excellent, the plot is believable and charming, the performances are funny, vibrant, true-to-life, and in this version, quite poignant.

Charlize Theron's character, Tina, and her relationship with Guy, in particular, suddenly become crucial elements to the early plot development (she is a minor character in the original version). Her character is fleshed-out, and she has one HYSTERICAL scene (in the dentist's chair) that caught me so off-guard with its humour, that I nearly choked to death with laughter!!

Even Tom Hanks character as the group's manager, Mr. White, becomes more developed and there is an interesting scene and dialogue when the group is in Los Angeles at "the same hotel Lucy and Ricky stayed at" between Guy (who is gently drunk), Mr. White and a guy named Lloyd.

Even The Bass Player (the Wonder's bass player who is never given a name), played by the adorable Ethan Embry, has a scene or two not in the original film that adds to the sweetness of his character (as well as some sly sexiness).

Liv Tyler's role as Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye, becomes even more developed and she is such a marvelous actress in this film. She really is the heart and soul of the movie, and the newer version only adds to her wonderful mystique in this film.

And of course, Steve Zahn as Lenny, is still as funny as ever and is the one band member who has no fear to "push the envelope" and ride the roller-coaster of success to wherever it takes them.

I recommend this new version of "That Thing You Do!" whole-heartedly. Whether it is the original or the extended-cut, it is a lively, spirited, upbeat and thoroughly delightful viewing experience.

And, I am STILL humming "That Thing You Do!"

This is a delightful movie, probably unlike any you've ever seen. All the characters are so well balanced and adorable, and their story is so well told that it makes you feel it's a true story about real people. It's refreshing, sweet, entertaining and charming.

A group of friends puts together a music band and they record a song. The song gets on the radio and quickly climbs the music charts, making them an overnight success. Their unexpected and speedily growing fame puts their relationships, as well as individual integrity and self-respect, to the test. Troubles arise, and with them the characters show their true natures, good and bad, making their musical career as a rock group as brief and ephemeral as lightning.

But despite the obstacles the characters face, a few good things derive from them, new relationships are formed, old ones are strengthened, and all the characters make the choices that allow them to successfully follow their dreams after having lived through a life-changing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The score of the film is great and the songs are true to the style and the music of the sixties, which is the period in which the movie takes place. The clothing and sets are accurate and the characters are wonderfully adapted to the fads of the time. The writing, plot and dialogues are superbly well done (by Tom Hanks) and makes each and every character come alive, even those with just a few minutes of screen time. The cast is exquisitely chosen, including Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler and Tom Hanks, and their performances are natural and enjoyable.

This movie is a delight to watch time and again; each time you'll discover new details from the richly layered, yet realistic and simple personality of each character. A must-buy for anyone who likes a movie that tells a high-quality story through the eyes of interesting and refreshing characters.

My impression in watching this movie for the first time a few years ago is how Tom Hanks went to great lenghts to make you feel that this DID happen. (or could have happened).

The catchy tune of the same title plays like a classic. Along with the movie, check out the soundtrack and liner notes. (written by none other than Mr. A.M. White of Playtone records!) Interesting tidbits of information again form a very solid back story to this charming and funny movie.

Things like musicians last names come from Hanks' other favorite subject.. The space program. Starting with Wonders' members Lenny Haise & James Mattingly (they share last names with famous astronauts.. Fred Haise was part of the doomed Apollo 13 mission)

The theme song to "Mr. Downtown", a show about the exploits of one police sergeant named "Shakes" Lovell (probably named after Apollo 13 commander James Lovell) and the song "Voyage Around the Moon", a Ventures-ish surf rocker performed by the Saturn 5's, for a mulit-stage rocket used in the space program.

Hanks' gives impressive direction to a great cast. (Steve Zahn who plays Lenny just cracks me up every time) Every one did not only act very well in this movie, but made you really believe they could play. Tom Everett Scott who plays Guy Patterson, can play some mean drums!

This is a movie about friendship, individualism and honor.. set in simpler times... a must see!

Apparently the very-talented Tom Hanks is even more talented that we previously knew. Hanks has shown for some time that he is the closest modern actor to the late, great Jimmy Stewart in the superb naturalness of his acting in every movie genre from comedies to drama. But with this film he shows himself also to be a talented writer and director as well. The movie chronicles the rise and dissolution of a 1960's rock band which writes and records a single top-ten hit. Personally I've always wondered why so many early rock groups were one-hit-wonders. If a band is good enough to make one hit record, why isn't it capable of making several -or at least a few -more? The answer presented in this movie is that the one-hit Wonders self detruct due to a combination of ego conflicts, the pressures of success, and just the vagaries of circumstance. This movie could have been a mildly entertaining quasi-documentary. Instead, as written and directed by Hanks and played by the talented young cast he assembled -the most outstanding of whom is Tom Everett Scott and Liv Tyler (who recently played the beautiful elf Arwen in The Lord of the Rings) -this is a fun film from beginning to end. Frankly, I'm not much of a rock fan, but I loved this film. If you haven't seen it yet, please give yourself a treat and get this DVD.

That this is a charming, fun, all-ages film is obvious simply by listening to the title song, for which the film is named. It is 1964 and 4 pals have joined together to form a band. Thee band members are instantly recognisable as "types," but the performances are so genuine and heartfelt that we forgive two-dimensionality. The lead singer (the brooding genius) has written a catchy tune that allows the band to win a battle of the bands, which in turn lands them a gig at a diner, which in turn.... Well, you get the idea. The song eventually ends up at #7 on the Billboard chart. That is the beginning of the end for the Wonders, as they start to disintegrate as a band the guitar player (the goofball) is content to enjoy the ride, the bass player (the straightlaced one) runs off to the Marine Corps, while the Brooder knows that the only way to develop is to get in the studio and cut an album of all original songs.

Holding the band together are the two central characters Liv Tyler as the Brooder's girlfriend (and unofficial 5th member) and the drummer Guy. Guy grew up destined to stay in his home town, inheriting the family business (selling appliances). He sits in the basement at night with his beat-up drum kit and plays along with jazz records. At one point, he asks a bellhop where he can find some "good" jazz, and when he passes a skill-testing question ("Who played cornet on so-and-so's album in 1956?" Of course, Guy knows the answer), he is directed to a bar and ends up meeting one of his idols, a jazz pianist who is also in audience that night.

The great thing about the film is that it is straightforward and earnest. There are no artificial obstacles set in the band's way Guy's father lets him go on tour without a second thought because he knows his son will never be happy as an appliance salesman. When the band starts its inevitable meltdown, it's because of the personalities of the band members being true to their personalities, not because some greedy executive is taking advantage of them, or some other external reason. We can therefore relax, knowing the plot isn't going to artificially jerk us around. We can laugh along at the antics on the screen and we're happy at the end, even knowing intellectually that we haven't grown as human beings in the process. The film is not perfect the title song is overplayed like a catchy advertising jingle and you get a little sick of it. But because the rest of the film is so fun, we can forgive such small problems.

Comparisons with American Graffiti are inevitable. Although they have different subjects, they both try to invoke the fun of a simpler time in the United States, that of the prosperous and morally simplistic 60's, before free love, anti-Vietnam protests, and race riots. That Thing You Do! is sort of like American Graffiti lite, and it even includes a "what happened to the main characters" synopsis at the end. It's a measure of the heart of the two films that the Bass Player becomes a marine and survives his tours of duty in Vietnam, whereas Terry in American Graffiti is killed in his tour.

Unfortunately, I've deducted a star for the poor level of extras on the DVD. There are a couple music videos (besically full-length versions of the songs), a making of short (which is a shameless extended-trailer promotional bit), and that's about it. Tom Hanks is an interesting guy, and this is his directorial debut why isn't there a director's commentary?
