Jack Goes Boating (2009)

Jack Goes BoatingJack Goes Boating marks the directorial debut of one of America's most accomplished and one of my personal favorite actors, the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman. The man has been a spark in such films as Spike Lee's touching 25th Hour and the Charlie Kaufman-helmed surrealist mind-bender Synecdoche, Ny. His direction here is understated, his film shambling but not entirely bleak. Jack Goes Boating is a drifting picture, but it is a winner because of its heart. It could have, given the subject matter, a relentlessly dour experience. Instead, Hoffman incorporates both the happy and the sad in mostly equal measures. A small film, but a success.

The film centers on a neurotic, rasti-loving New York limo driver with a penchant for pot and a nearly overwhelming sense of day-to-day isolation. He latches onto a couple whose marital fabric is stretching from past indiscretions, through whom he is introduced to an equally neurotic young woman named Connie who seems to have a good if oft-trampled heart.

In some ways, Jack Goes Boating feels a lot like a Cheever or a Raymond Carver short story. There is not a lot of action, the story centering mainly on character interactions. It is plodding but never dull. There are many surprises, actually, such as a weird subway scene and a dinner party climax for the ages. Despite what its detractors will no doubt claim, the film strikes a resonant tone. It seems "real", for lack of a better word. Hoffman's performance is understated but always reliable and Amy Ryan is excellent as the damaged Connie. The two leads are ultimately a conjoined foil for the other couple whose marital pains provide the film's moral center, as well as dramatic tension.

Indie enthusiasts take note, the soundtrack is also quite interesting. Though the song choices are generic, the bands represented are some of my favorites, Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes among them. Ultimately, this is a soft film with a lot of memorable scenes, snappy dialogue and while it may meander, that is its charm. Very poignant.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Every year, there are a fair share of idiosyncratic character pieces that pop up in the indie film scene that are loaded down with critical hyperbole proclaiming them as comedic masterworks. And nine out of ten times, these films (marketed as comedies) leave mainstream audiences perplexed. "Jack Goes Boating" is a prime example of just such a film--albeit one with a pretty impressive pedigree. Directed by and starring the great Philip Seymour Hoffman with the terrific Amy Ryan providing support, let me make one thing clear before I go any further--I am EXACTLY the audience for this film. In fact, when it was in town theatrically, I was going to go but it only lasted one week in our local movie houses. So I knew what this film was, had my expectations firmly in check, and was eager to jump right in! Well, truth be told, Hoffman's work left me a little cold with its remote awkwardness.

I appreciate films that can mine comic inspiration from the world's disconnectedness. "Jack Goes Boating" assembles the requisite damaged oddballs and brings them together to achieve maximum quirkiness. I'd describe the plot, but it is really rather superfluous. In summary, Hoffman and Ryan play an unlikely pair brought together by their married, but increasingly troubled, friends (John Ortiz and Daphne Ruben-Vega). That's about it. Will the pair be able to overcome their own problems to unite as a post modern example of healthy couple-hood? Or will you care? That might be a far more astute question. On some level, the viewer must be able to connect with the characters--preferably to like them, but absolutely essentially to understand them. Here, the characters stand as constructs--bits of weirdness with no real world explanation to their social deficiencies. If you knew the central characters in your real life, you would run in the opposite direction so as not to be sucked into their unexplained and self-imposed misery.

I didn't hate the movie, per se, I was just completely removed from it. Anyone, however, judging the marketing campaign and picking this up as a robust comedy might feel a bit betrayed. I knew what to expect. Still, Ryan is glass menagerie brittle while Hoffman is monosyllabic awkwardness. Neither character is developed much beyond superficial qualities that would brand them social pariahs. Ortiz stands as the only member of the cast that possessed an iota of joy or genuine warmth--and the film progressively makes him less and less palatable. At the end, I didn't care about anyone in the film and in a program billed as "heartfelt"--this is a major stumbling block. There were moments I quite liked, but as a whole, the picture never gelled to be anything other than odd. KGHarris, 5/11.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This film was exactly what I thought it would be, and more.

Philip Seymour Hoffman directs and stars in this quiet, quirky film about a man named Jack. Jack and Connie are set up on a blind date by their married friends, Clyde and Lucy. Clyde and Lucy seem very together and ambitious, while Jack and Connie are basically loner losers.

But from this humble, awkward first date emerges a real relationship and passion for life. Throughout the film we see very little of Jack and Connie, or Lucy and Clyde, together, but we really get to know them as individuals and couples.

The perfection Clyde and Lucy exude quickly diminishes to show the tarnished dysfunction they actually inhabit together. The denial and lack of love is painful to watch, while Jack's hopefulness and devotion are truly touching. The lesson this film taught me made it worth watching (the last line is so beautiful).

Some pretty scary and violent (more verbal than physical) moments show the depth of the actors in this film. This is definitely an offbeat film, so it may not be for you.

And the soundtrack is amazing!!

Very quirky and dark, but with enough sentimental moments to endear you, Jack Goes Boating is a good film.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program In his directorial debut, Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman also stars as the shy and simple Jack. Bob Glaudini adapted his acclaimed off-broadway play for this movie, where Hoffman reprised his role on stage.

Set in New York City, Jack drives a limo for his uncle. Jack's sole friends, Clyde and Lucy, have their own problems and ambiguities. They set up Jack on a blind date with Connie (Amy Ryan) that ignites a narrative comprised of a series of drab superfluous occurrences. The underlying theme seems to be misery and monotony. Jack and Connie are two uncommitted single individuals with their own personal and social issues, and are unconsciously yet successfully withdrawing into the urban background of anonymity. Together and in each other they discover the desire to begin a burgeoning relationship. Ironically, the friends who brought them together are battling the crisis of a failing and unsettled marriage.

So, Jack goes boating because... well, I suppose I shouldn't spoil it here. Let's just say he wants to rise above his fears and deficiencies. He overcomes his fear of water, as well as his lack of skills in the kitchen, in the very basic interest of self-improvement. Oh, and he also wants to impress his newfound love interest.

Love and friendship, lies and betrayal, achievement and collapse. "Jack Goes Boating" is casually situated in a slice of working-class New York City life. The writing and acting is brutally genuine. Hoffman demonstrates his versatile talents behind the camera and in front of it. Quixotic and exquisite, the movie is an informal tale of love that comes and goes like a snowflake in winter. Depending on your taste, you will either hate it or appreciate it.

Highly recommended.

Philip Seymour Hoffman directs and plays the lead character in a screen adaptation of Bob Glaudini's play "Jack Goes Boating." There are a lot of things to like about this film, including the "ordinary guy" aspect of the character Jack. He's somebody who's struggling with many of the same things the rest of us are, such as relationship issues and getting a better job, but he works hard to maintain a "positive vibe." The story is about two couples, all four people portrayed very well by the actors who played them, especially John Ortiz as Clyde. But it's a lot of the smaller things that made me like "Jack Goes Boating," including the effective use of music, both songs and score; plus such storytelling touches as the way Jack tries to visualize the things he is learning. The central scene in the movie, the dinner party, was a bit hard to watch. Still, I acknowledge its importance and saw how it ties into the rest of the story, how it is both the outcome of what came before it and affects what comes after it.

The extras on the disc are fairly minimal, with two short featurettes and two even shorter deleted scenes.

Arthur Newman (Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack) (2012)

Arthur NewmanImagine my surprise when out of the blue and without any pre-release buzz or ads this movie showed on a single screen for all of Greater Cincinnati this weekend. I figured that this will not stick around very long and hence I went to see it right away.

"Arthur Newman" (2013 release; 100 min.) brings the story of a man (played by Colin Firth) who is in the dumps: he just got fired from his job, his ex-wife does not care for him, and his 13 yr. old son hates the mere sight of him. As the movie opens, we see Colin Firth acquiring a new identity, actually someone who passed away a few years ago named Arthur Newman. He then fakes his own death and takes off, as a "new man". Arthur plans on driving from Florida to Terre Haute, IN, where a job as a golf instructor awaits. But on his first night on the road, he makes the acquaintance of a young woman (played by Emily Blunt), who herself is running away from her own troubles, and using her twin sister's identity ("Mike") along the way. Mike decides to join Arthur on the trip to Indiana. To tell you much more of the plot would ruin your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Several comments: first, this is a road movie for the most part, as we follow the two main characters from motel to hotel, and from town to town, on their way to Indiana. Second, the main characters are engulfed in melancholy as on the one hand they are running away from something, yet at the same time are pining for love and someone who understands their problems. Both performances from Colin Firth and Emily Blunt are ace from start to finish. Blunt has been on an incredible run recently (just last year alone I saw her in Your Sister's Sister, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Looper and the Five Year Engagement, and she shone in just about all of them), and she continues that hot streak in this movie.

This movie gathered positive buzz last Fall when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I had been waiting eagerly to see it. The screening I saw this at here in Cincinnati was not particularly well attended, and so I doubt this will stick around long in the theaters. That said, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, and if you are in the mood for something where things don't blow up every 5 minutes, I would readily recommend "Arthur Newman".

Be careful what you wish for! Sometimes the dream is far better than the reality, but it is the dream that drives our eponymous hero to plan and execute some drastic action. This R-rated dramedy is more drama than comedy; furthermore, if you have any trouble hearing dialogue, you might want to consider closed captions, either in a theater, or wait for the DVD. You don't want to miss the finer points in this plot.

We watch:

* Colin Firth ("A Single Man" and "The King's Speech") speaking American (!), is Arthur Newman, a frustrated wanna-be golf pro who, after a down-hill slide, has decided to reinvent himself. "New man," get it? He cleverly fakes his own death and hits the road.

* Emily Blunt ("Your Sister's Sister") also speaking American, is Mike, a young woman with nothing to lose. She encounters our hero on the road and they proceed to go adventuring...

* Anne Heche ("Cedar Rapids") is Mena, the girl he left behind. She knows he's boring, but she loves him anyway.

* Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") is Grant, our hero's son. It turns out that he is the most compelling reason for Arthur Newman to re-think his decision.

As our couple journeys on, they break into people's houses and take on the personalities (and clothes!) of the occupants. They are far more comfortable being someone else than being themselves. The tagline is: "If you don't have a life, get someone else's." They find this great...until it isn't.

This is no light-hearted romp, but we are in the hands of pros. Both Firth and Blunt are wonderful actors, so there is no quibble about the quality of their work. I would like... Maybe... Oh, I don't know WHAT I would like... Maybe the DVD from Amazon will help me decide.

"Arthur Newman," (2012) is a new independently-made American road picture/comedy/romantic drama starring two British actors with comedy chops, Colin Firth and Emily Blunt. It was directed by Dante Ariola from a screen play by Becky Johnston, (Seven Years In Tibet [HD]. And I'm going to quote its plot summary, written by its screenwriter Johnston, as posted at The Internet Movie Database:

Wallace Avery hates his job. His ex-wife and son hate him, and he's blown his one shot at living his dream. Not wanting to face all this, he stages his own death and buys himself a new identity as Arthur Newman. However, Arthur's road trip towards a new life is interrupted by the arrival of the beautiful but fragile Mike, who is also trying to leave her past behind. Drawn to one another, these two damaged souls begin to connect as they break into empty homes and take on the identities of the absent owners: elderly newlyweds, a high-roller and his Russian lady, among others. Through this process, Arthur and Mike discover that what they love most about each other are the identities they left at home, and their real journey, that of healing, begins.

The acting is competent to the job. The well-born Colin Firth, once such tasty eye candy, now looking very middle-aged, plays Arthur. (See The King's Speech for which he won the Best Actor Oscar, Bridget Jones's Diary, Love Actually, Pride and Prejudice (Restored Edition). The equally well-born Emily Blunt, a Golden Globe winner for The Devil Wears Prada, plays Mike. Anne Heche, (Six Days, Seven Nights, Donnie Brasco), an actor with a more eventful private life than most of Hollywood, plays Arthur's girlfriend Mina Crawley.

But remarkably little happens in this road picture; most scenes are reminiscent of actor's studio exercises. The rather distasteful scenes of the couple breaking into people's houses and play-acting as the occupants while they make love have a desperate vibe, as in, `We gotta do sumphin. We need more screen time." (The film runs only 101 minutes). And it flies in the face of common sense for a man who has tasted some success in golfing under his real name Wallace Avery, to think he can capitalize on that success under the A/K/A of `a new man.'

The film was largely made in North Carolina, so it gives us some lovely scenery with which most viewers will not be familiar. Some of it was filmed quite close to my Carolina Beach residence; the beach scenes at Fort Fisher. Coles Motel? Well, that's very near our cute little beachy keen library branch. So that's a plus for us--rather few -local residents and visitors. But, sorry, I can't recommend the film.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman: The Movie (2005)

Diary of a Mad Black Woman: The MovieI went to see this movie the first weekend that it came out, and I wasn't disappointed at all; I saw the original play, and wasn't greatly impressed with it, but seeing the movie, I enjoyed it very well. Kimberly Elise and Shemar Moore gave great performances; Of course, Tyler Perry playing three roles simultaneously was just as good and I applaud him; Cicely Tyson, of course, gave a gem of a performance helping her daughter become more stronger even though she herself has been wronged; I have heard the good and the bad about this movie; I have heard that Madea is just another stereotypical role model that we need to get away from; But let's be honest, how many of us can attest to a Madea in our family? or at least pieces of such a woman? This was one movie that sex and profanity wasn't splashed forward and yet, the critics bashed it; Yet, I found it a good movie, and can all of us who supported Mr Perry opening weekend be wrong? I don't think so; Look forward to the DVD.

I applaud the earlier reviewer, Ramsess Gray from Fayetteville, NC. Thank you for standing up to all the other so-called critics who trashed this movie. I thought this was an excellent movie from beginning to end. In his big-screen debut, Tyler Perry delivered big-time, no questions asked. Darren Grant, Mr. Perry, Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore and the rest of the cast were second-to-none in my opinion. I loved each of the characters Mr. Perry played himself, especially gun-toting Grandma. She was funny & very entertaining throughout. As far as best picture and/or any awards are concerned, I think Mr. Perry should have as good a chance as anyone to win an award in some category(ies). Also, in my opinion, Kimberly Elise should win something for her role. And for that matter so should Darren Grant & Shemar Moore. But that's only my opinion. The movie was very entertaining and it had all the qualities you could ask for in a movie. It made you laugh. It made you cry. It made you happy. It made you sad & it made you proud, all in about 2 hours time. I'm sure this movie is not and will not be for everyone. We all have different tastes. All I can really say is "watch the movie for what it is", and that's entertainment at it's best.

i saw the movie version first & so was pleasantly surprised to discover that the two versions were handled SO differently -so much so that they are BOTH worth seeing & (in my opinion) owning. there are some different characters in each & some of the situations are handled differently, but the overall story remains the same &, of course, madea is HYSTERICAL no matter where she goes! :D i also enjoyed the father character in the play version a lot better than the movie version's joe (joe was a little too real-life disgusting for me -i was having flashbacks to someone i know in real life! =:O) & i LOVED the strong-in-the-Lord singing mom, ESPECIALLY when she sings that song about rebuking the devil -you GO girl! i also enjoyed the fact that there seemed to be a little more Jesus in the play version -the movie version seemed to have more of that "sanitized" hollywood feel? i.e. cleansed of explicit references to God, Jesus & the Bible -which i don't blame mr. perry for & i praise God that he's getting his plays made into movies & reaching a wider audience with the Message \o/ -you GO dude!

I saw the movie before I got this play. If you have seen the movie you need to see this as well. Other than the songs being too long, it was great. Please don't go in with the mind set of it being like the movie because it is not. Some of the characters are different. So of course the outcome is different. Daddy Charles was a good character choice addition to the play. You will laugh. This play if definitely funny. And it gives you something to think about.

Tenchi Muyo!: War on Geminar, Part 1 (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2009)

Tenchi Muyo!: War on Geminar, Part 1I've always been a big fan of the Tenchi Muyo cosmos (can't really say world or universe cause that still wouldn't encompass all the different story lines).

I can say without a doubt this very high on my list to purchase. I've watched the fansubs multiple times. The storyline is engaging, the characters are deep and well modeled. The episodes are a satisfying 40 minutes long.

I my only problem is that 130$ (10$ per episode) for both boxes seems to be rather steep. At 70$ I would snatch the series up, but for now, I'll wait and bide my time till the prices drop.

The Thing that this series has linked with tenchi muyo is the name and one or two character references from the other series otherwise its pretty much a stand alone series. I also believe that the animation in this series is the best out of all of the Tenchi series. I wish they wouldn't have split the series up like they did but you can't ask for everything.

I'll be the first to say this is a great series. However, Funimation's translation contained a number of issues I found extremely frustrating. There weren't too many real errors, but some of the translation choices were annoying or worse. For instance, Funimation sometimes seems to want to overemphasize genre in their translation, made obvious here with their obsessive insertion of "mecha" wherever they think they can get away with it. "Holy Armor" suddenly becomes "Sacred Mechanoid", and "Holy Knight" turns into "Sacred Mechamaster", and largely unrelated devices like Wahan's robot are given almost identical names. The ultimate result to me was to make a lot of things sound silly.

What was far worse was the series description. Where in the world did these people get the idea of the conflicts being "intergalactic"? This'd be the first intergalactic battle I've seen that takes place entirely on one planet, involving people who don't appear to have ever even heard of space flight, with one single boy from another dimension(or something) stranded there whose civilization has barely managed to reach their moon. I've often felt that Funimation's descriptions and advertisements went a little overboard emphasizing specific aspects they thought would sell (in particular focusing entirely on fanservice regardless of the story that goes along with it), showing no interest in anything past the obvious, but this's the first time they seemed to create a description that makes up a completely different story altogether.

Kenshi Masaki is the half brother of Tenchi Masaki. Somehow he was summoned to another planet called Geminar. He doen't know why or how he got there though. Fortunately, this planet is mostly inhabited by hot chicks that are all crazy about Kenshi. Kenshi enters a school for young mecha pilots. Part 1 of this series mainly covers his daily life and develops his relationship with the girls at the school. There is, however, trouble brewing on Geminar. A mysterious group has plans that threaten the people of Geminar, and somehow, Kenshi fits into their plan.

I expected a little more action from this series, because of the title, "War On Geminar". I think that the war actually starts in part 2. There are some major differences with this series and the original Tenchi Muyo series that this spins off of. The characters are the main difference. They are all good though. This set has 7-50 minute episodes. So it is actually a long as a 26-episode series if you include part 2. The situations are more suggestive than the original series, but there isn't any nudity. I think it should be rated PG-13, but whatever. The animation, voice acting and soundtrack are all top notch; as you probably expected from the Tenchi franchise. Although different from what I expected, this series did entertain me. I hope it picks up a bit in part 2, and I wish that it was a little cheaper. Other than those 2 little details, I think this is a good buy. If you like the older Tenchi series, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

I first saw this series at an anime convention a few years back and was excited to see it picked up for official release on Blu-Ray/DVD in North America. I do have a few complaints. The biggest being that the audio mix seemed a bit off. The dialog and music tracks seemed a bit loud, while the sound effects seemed muted. I felt like I was watching the commentary of the episode with all of the action taking place in another room. I tried both the Blu-Ray version and the DVD on different players and audio receivers with the same results. The English soundtrack was a little better. I could hear most of the low range heavy explosions, but the midrange sound effects like gunfire and sword on sword clashing were still not very loud.

I mostly watched it in Japanese, but while comparing the soundtracks, I did notice that some of the English voice actors seemed to ad-lib or babble a bit, like they needed to fill up every bit of screen time with dialog. And some of the terms seemed overly translated like "Sacred Mechamaster" instead of Seikishi. Despite these things, I still enjoyed watching this anime again, and look forward to the second volume, where story plot picks up and the action gets more intense.

Bus Stop (1956)

Bus StopThis review refers to the 20th Century Fox(Diamond Collection)DVD edition of "Bus Stop"

Bo can hog tie a calf, and ride a bronco better and faster than anyone around. But he is naive in the ways of the world. When he takes his first bus trip to the city to dazzle em at a rodeo, he's in for the ride of his life. His mentor Virge, tells him it's time he found a gal of his own. Bo likes this idea, but he doesn't want any ol' gal, it's got to be an angel. He'll know her when he sees her! And what's more he'll simply rope her and haul her back with him. Well, things get complicated for this simple guy, when he spots his angel. She is Cherie. A "Chanteuse" with plans of her own. Cherie has direction in her life. The direction being from "River Gulch" to "Hollywood", where she will have "options". She is trying desperatly to shed her "hillbilly" image. A Montana cattle ranch was not part of the plan. Once these two meet though, Cherie has no choice in the matter(or does she?), and is literally swept off her feet by Bo.She finds herself on a bus ride that may change her life. Can the naive rancher and and the saloon singer with a past find love? Find out in this very touching story.

Marilyn Monroe will capture your heart(once again) as Cherie. She shines in this role of a more dramatic nature. She treats us to "That Old Black Magic", and although, Cherie's talent as a songstress is not going to win her any awards, it doesn't matter. Like Bo, we are just dazzled by what we see!

Don Murray is introduced as Bo. He's absolutely wonderful as the innocent cowboy. Directed by Joshua Logan, it also stars such greats as Arthur O'connell, Eileen Heckart, Betty Field, and look for a very young Hope Lange. The are some charming musical numbers as well.

This film from 1956,has been restored and looks fabulous. It is presented in anamorphic widescreen(1.85:1) with wonderful color and a beautifully clear picture. The sound may be listented to in 4.0 Surround or stereo, and is terriffic as well. It may be viewed in French(mono) and has Spanish and English subtitles. There's a theatrical trailer, some stills, and a great demonstration of how the restoration compares with previous transfers. If you can't get enough of Marilyn, you may want to consider buying this in the "Diamond Collection" set. Besides this one, it includes, "How To Marry A Millionaire", Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", "There's No Business Like Show Business","The Seven Year Itch" and a great documentary about Marilyn's last months "The Final Days". All of these DVDs are excellent as well.

"Bus Stop" is dramatic, funny and poignant. It will leave you with a smile on your face for some time afterwards.

Spend some time with Marilyn....and enjoy...Laurie

Many critics now say that it's a crime that Marilyn Monroe was never nominated for an Academy Award. Her not being nominated for her performance in "Bus Stop" is proof.

Today, we often see actors starring in movies that require them to speak with a certain accent, and their accents come-and-go during the movie. You wont find that here. Marilyn's hillbilly accent remains throughout the film, and it's a very realistic one. Initially, Marilyn's costume was an expensive getup created by the studio, but she herself went to a second-hand shop and found an outfit that she believed her character would actually wear. And, she agreed that she should wear the white, chalky make-up that she does in the film, as her character is one who sleeps during the day (never sees sunlight) and works at night.

Marilyn displays a wide range of emotions in this film--happiness, sexiness, sadness, excitement, and downright anger--and we feel every one of them. I dont think any other actress could have done a better job in the role.

The entire cast is excellent as well. The role of "Grace" is a scene-stealer!

We've got to admit that this kind of material belongs to the theater. However the casting of DON MURRAY in a real far out character and MARILYN MONROE as a dancer works surprizingly well. The saloon scene with MARILYN singing the 1942 MERCER classic THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC is fun.The fighting match in the snow is a real audience rouser.Perhaps one can say that the character that MURRAY plays seems rather unappealing and rather unbelievable. To resume the story simply, it's a youngman from the country who becomes a man when he discovers sex the first time he sees CHERIE.

Marilyn is undoubtedly at her best in this great motion picture. One correction to other comments BUS STOP is full 2.35:1 Cinemascope, not 1.85:1. Be assured that those prone closeups are seen in their full glory and Marilyn's performance of "That Old Black Magic" is SUPPOSED to be bad. It remains gloriously awful and one of THE great movie scenes.

Want Bus Stop (1956) Discount?

The story is corny, but that's what makes it so funny. Marilyn over plays the character as a lot of little things happen around her that aren't really part of the story, but would be typical in a similar situation; like for example when Marilyn is trying to change clothes in the bus full of sleeping passenger. She contends with the little boy who is set to watch by placing her hand on the top of his head and turning it to the side. At the time the bus driver almost runs off the road and turns the bus over trying to get a peek too. Marilyn is just too perfect at being Marilyn!

I Married a Witch (Criterion Collection)

I Married a WitchI've been waiting for at least 10 years for this hilarious film to be released on dvd for region 1. I owned the vhs, and it was a film I'd watch with family and friends every Halloween season....until dvds replaced vhs tapes. It's been a long wait. At one point, I even purchased a bootleg with Korean subtitles that was too awful to enjoy. I'm thrilled that it's getting the Criterion treatment that it deserves.

Veronica Lake is stunning as a witch who puts a curse on the descendants of the judge who convicted her of witchcraft in Puritan New England. Cecil Kellaway is charming. Fredric March plays the descendants from the 17th century until the present day (1942), doomed to suffer miserable marriages. Great sets, great costumes, great hair, great story by the writer of Topper. Lake must have been quite a diva. She and Fredric March loathed one another. March said working with her was the worst experience of his life, and he worked with Miriam Hopkins! Joel McCrea turned it down because he refused to work with her after Sullivan's Travels.

Speaking of divas, Susan Hayward is in it too!

this is a wonderful movie which has stood the test of time. this is the film which gave rise to Bewitched. Absolutely charming. My children loved it and i still enjoy watching it. Though Veronica Lake was reportedly impossible to work with, that doesn't come through in the film. All the acting is excellent. It's delightful, not at all slow paced (despite its age). i'm so glad that it's FINALLY available on DVD!

Veronica Lake in my opinion, was one of Hollywood's most neglected stars. She was vibrant, sexy, beautiful, charming and just plain lovely. She made only a few films, compared to other actresses of her time. I am not really sure why there is so little of her work?

I have only seen 2 of her films, but she is just wonderful, clever and funny. Her films stand the test of time and she is always beautifully dressed..Adrian or was it Howard Greer or perhaps it was Edith Head??? Perhaps all 3 of these famous designers were used to make Veronica's costumes...not sure??

In any case, I love her films and her acting. I think she was/is just wonderful. I Married a Witch is cute, funny and just a marvelous film to watch over and over. Frederick March is just too adorable for words, his performance in this film is often disregarded because Veronica was sooo lovely, but he is a cutey too and very high Hollywood.

Thank you, Veronica!
