Holy Rollers (2010)

The story, in and of itself, is undeniably fascinating--it documents a ring of Ecstasy smugglers in the late nineties who transported their wares internationally using the least likely suspects. Justin Bartha colorfully portrays the neighborhood bad boy who eschews the conventional expectations of the Hasidic community. Eisenberg is his neighbor and friend who becomes a bit disillusioned as his life does not seem to be going precisely as planned. When Bartha proposes an opportunity for Eisenberg to score some cash for traveling to Amsterdam, he is reluctant. But after an initial foray into this new venture, he begins to embrace it more and more. The corruption of innocence and the seduction of power are primary themes in this tale of lawlessness. But how far is he willing to go? And is there any way out?
A taut and succinct screenplay maintains the film's momentum as Eisenberg rises in importance. The movie does a great job documenting the real danger of the enterprise and undeniable allure it holds for our young protagonist. Wrestling the classic demons of evil versus good, Eisenberg relates the moral and ethical dilemma with precision. But Bartha also steals just about every scene he's in! Clearly on a path to destruction, he nevertheless maintains a charisma and likability that keeps the film grounded. The film doesn't provide an easy out and everyone must face the consequences of their choices. "Holy Rollers" is quite entertaining and an easy recommendation, but beware of the hyperbole of one critic that is printed on the DVD. Comparing this to "Scarface" or "The Godfather" will set unreasonable expectations. It shares some of the same basic themes, but this small and understated film is much more specific in its tone and modest in its goals! KGHarris, 3/11.

I cried several times during the movie. I really loved the contrast between all the characters. The story telling was incredibly touching, it was delivered in a very realistic way. Incredible acting by all, loved Thandie in this, and I thought this was Tyler's best acting gig ever.i love this film because it shows the realistic shortcomings of affluent western culture. Perry's role represents what this society has regarded as success-education,money and prominence. gabrielle union's character represenrs what has happened to so many american women (ala lndsy lhn etc.} life to them is self indulgence, money ,materialism and one big party with no desire for children and the dedicated joys of motherhood.rashad's character sees tyler as a success and favored son due to shallow values only.thandie newton's character is reality-in that many try very hard in life and never get the breaks to ease lifes stresses. perry has one excellent trait -that of compassion and empathy.as he views thandies depressed life he also sees a person with values and appreciation of kindness and a protective and loving mother.my favorite scene in the film is when she asks deeds how much is a gallon of milk. this brings him to reality and makes him re-evaluate life.his character is what makes him a success not him money, education or prominence. ireally enjoyed whites character because he represents the failures in parenting, a basically good son ,never nutured by a mom who showed favoritism to the achieving prominent son over the son who needed emotional support and constantly succumbed to her abusive criticism. as a caucasion male i tend to prefer black film-makers over whites because white cinema shows life how they want it to be in most film while black directors tend to show the reality of life. see this film.Interesting story line, well acted, a very touching and thoughtful movie. What appeared to be a fairy tale life was not, but all of that changed with one GOOD DEED!We The Party (2012)

The film also has some party rappers, an up skirt cell phone cam, a school project that interfaces with poor people, and a token 20 year old near thug (Y.G. who pays C.C.) in class. Snoop Dog listed in the credits has a minor role.
Peebles has no problem quoting Malcolm X (just called Malcolm in the film to fool us white folk) and gives a grand lecture on consumerism, aimed at both Hendrix and the audience. The acting and story line were just fine, it just seems to be underdeveloped. Maybe I have just outgrown these films.
PARENTAL GUIDE: F-Bomb, off screen sex, no nudity. 2 1/2 starsGreat movie never a dull moment definitely one for the collection . We the party served as a look in to life nowadays and its right on.The movie was good not only for myself but for my grandchildren as well.
