Janeane Garofalo: If You Will - Live in Seattle (2010)

Janeane Garofalo: If You Will - Live in SeattleJaneane Garofalo. Love her or hate her, I admit that I used to listen to her on the defunct Air America via her radio show "The Marjority Report" and have always felt that her comedy was intelligent, self-deprecating and one of those people you want to hang out with because she was like a female version of Larry David. A bit narcissistic and she has this unique perspective towards society and pop culture that I find witty and different from other female comedians.

Although, Janeane Garofalo is known for her television and movie work, may it be from "24', "The West Wing", "Felicity", "The Larry Sanders Show" or "Reality Bites", she was once a stand-up comedian who would go up on stage with her notebook and go into random observations and direct quotes in her act.

It's been several years now but Garofalo made her return on stage via her special "If You Will" shot in Seattle's Moore Theatre and aired on EPIX in June 2010 and now, the special will be released on Blu-ray and DVD.

VIDEO:

"Janeane Garofalo If You Will: Live in Seattle" is presented in 1080 High Definition (1:78:1). The picture quality is solid and there is a good lighting on Janeane, skin tones are natural, blacks are nice and deep. No dizzying editing cuts, we see Garofalo straight on but you don't see a lot of audience reactions to her jokes. Camera angles are stationary towards Janeane via close up, full body or right behind her onto the audience.

AUDIO:

As for the audio, the audio for "Janeane Garofalo If You Will: Live in Seattle" is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Dialogue is clear and understandable, audience reactions and ambiance can be heard through the surround channels. Overall, the lossless audio is well-done.

SPECIAL FEATURES

"Janeane Garofalo If You Will: Live in Seattle" comes with the following special features presented in 1080p High Definition (widescreen 1:78:1) and audio via uncompressed PCM Stereo:

* Pets(6:00) Janeane talks about losing a dog and her love for dogs but this time, having to take care of a female toddler and comparing her to a dog.

* Representative Richard Martin (R) (5:13) A Republican politician wants to be interviewed by Janeane and question her on her liberal beliefs.

JUDGMENT CALL:

For those who are familiar with Garofalo's work on Air America, many wonder if this will be a liberal tongue lashing on stage. And if anything, Janeane keeps things cool and doesn't engage in any politics, party groups or anything that is too racy.

If anything, watching "If You Will", this is a mature Garofalo. A grown up version of what we have seen from her in the 1990's but this time, seeing how her career has changed over the years but also how life has affected her in different ways. She takes on a various topics which include her maturity, misconceptions of her being a lesbian, hear health, her Spanx body shaper, her alcoholism and more. Including an interesting perspective that she has towards Natalie Portman (and Charlize Theron). If anything, Garofalo is quite fun to watch because she is esoteric. She is intelligent, well-versed but she doesn't come off as an egotistical snob.

Garofalo comes onto the stage with her notepad, tatoos on her arms and just goes through a flow of whatever is on her mind and it's a different style of comedy than one typically sees on stage. Of the many stand-up comedy DVD's that I review each year, it's always a pleasure to watch not only a female comedian but also an intelligent one that doesn't pride herself in sexual or moronic comedy.

In one bit, Garofalo criticizes men on their lack of cutting their toenails and dry heels and her delivery is quick and as much as she dishes out, she brings back in and becomes self-deprecating. In one segment she talks about going to Starbucks and the barista telling her, "No offense, but you look like Janeane Garofalo" and another where her manager tells her she needs to have web presence and how she doesn't even tweet.

Her comedy is not for everyone but it's definitely comedy for those who want intelligent comedy for 65-minutes long and no, there is no polemicizing on one's political views. She keeps it to topics surrounding pop culture and life and topics that people can relate too.

The Blu-ray release of "If You Will: Live in Seattle" is a good blu-ray release with solid PQ and good use of the surrounds via the lossless audio. I wished there was a bit more special features but for the most part, these two short comedy segments are fun to watch and for the most part, "If You Will" is a good Garofalo comedy Blu-ray release.

Overall, "Janeane Garofalo If You Will: Live in Seattle" was a fun special and definitely an enjoyable comedy Blu-ray release!

Jeanane at her best. I find I can almost quote something daily from this routine. I never tire of watching.

This is a surprisingly good show. As somebody who was never a fan of Janeane's, I think she nailed just about everything here. Highly recommended, funny as hell.

I don't submit reviews for artist's performances. I don't consider myself qualified. To call what I'm typing right now a "review" is, therefore, just wrong. I just needed to share how much I enjoyed this DVD. I wanted to just submit a "star" rating alone, but that wasn't possible. Angry red letters appeared below the empty box demanding I "please write my review." I loved it. You might as well. End "review."

I have never seen anyone who has a more organized scatter brain than this girl. I love to watch her stand-ups. I recently saw one of her old ones on HBO Comedy channel and they edited the end of it out. So, I decided to come to Amazon to see if I could find it in it's original form and found this instead. I enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone. We need more of her stuff,(i.e. more stand-ups in other locations).

Play it to the Bone (2009)

Play it to the Bone`Play It To The Bone' is really two movies. One is a movie about boxing and the other is a comedic character study of the boxers. As a boxing film, it succeeds nicely. As a comedy it has its moments. As a character study, it hits the canvas hard.

The storyline was sort of `Rocky' times two. Two washed up middleweight boxers Vince and Cesar (Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas), who are also best friends, get a last minute chance to fight in Las Vegas on the undercard of a Mike Tyson heavyweight bout when the two scheduled fighters are unable to fight. They are promised that the winner will get a chance to fight for the championship, but they have to be in Las Vegas tonight. The trouble is, they have to fight each other.

So they climb into a car with Cesar's girlfriend (and Vince's ex-girlfriend) Grace (Lolita Davidovich) and drive from L.A. to Las Vegas. Most of the rest of the movie is about the drive followed by the fight.

Director Ron Shelton has had quite a few sports oriented success stories to his credit (Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump and Tin Cup). The best part of the film was the boxing. The boxing was well choreographed and both actors were athletic and fought like real boxers. Shelton was also excellent at creating the feel of a boxing match. Anyone who has ever watched an HBO bout will recognize ring announcers Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and George Foreman. Mike Tyson made a cameo as well as numerous celebrity boxing fans (Kevin Costner, Rod Stewart, Wesley Snipes and a host of others). The makeup for the cuts and puffiness was also very realistic.

Unfortunately, the rest of the film was not as good as the fight. Shelton spends a good deal of time developing the characters, but it is all for naught because they have no substance. They are two hapless jocks, obvious mental lightweights, who spend most of the trip to Las Vegas fighting over Grace, cutting up and strutting around like peacocks. Shelton takes great pains to try to make us love these characters equally by making them equally pathetic. But that doesn't work because it leaves the audience without anyone to pull for in the fight. The ending is utterly predictable and the film whimpers off into the sunset with no more than a stagger.

Banderas and Harrelson both gave journeyman performances. They had good chemistry and some decent comedy between them, but there was nothing special here. The best performance by far was by Davidovich who transcended her normal sex kitten role and took command of the entire film with a character that was a manipulative vixen. She was smart, tough and sexy, and dominated every scene. Once again, she shows that she is talented as well as attractive, which makes me wonder why she has never gotten roles that are more substantial.

This is a tough one to rate because it does some things very well and other things poorly. I gave it a 6/10. It had some good comedic moments, but not enough of them. It had some excellent boxing scenes, but a disappointing outcome. In addition, the character study simply failed due to vacant characters. If you like boxing, Harrelson, Banderas or especially Davidovich, you will enjoy this film. Otherwise, enter at your own risk.

This film has been knocked down more times than Dominguez and Boudreau in the climatic final fight scene. Sure the story was a bit uneven, but I still liked this quirky buddy/road trip movie for its unexpected and offbeat take that includes a seamier side of professional boxing. Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson are likeable stars and I thought they played off each other very well. While Harrelson is known to shift effortlessly from dramatic to comedic roles and back again, this was the first time I saw a lighter, more humorous side of Banderas and I thought he acquitted himself very well. Talented and sexy Lolita Davidovich as their street smart and savvy love interest was as much a welcomed casting choice as Lucy Liu's was a total waste of time other than being the object of Harrelson's vivid backseat description of her femininity prior to a hilarious if impromptu and primitive tryst. A host of cameo appearances fill out the rest of the card. Don't bring high expectations to the match and you won't be unduly disappointed, and you just may be mildly entertained for 2 hours.

At the beginning of this movie I was wide-awake but about 45 mins into the movie I could feel myself falling asleep. This movie doesn't really do anything for me until the last 50 mins. But before that all it is is a boring road trip that last forever and isn't funny. I loved the boxing scenes b/c they were brutal and it reminded me of Rocky and Raging Bull. I kinda predicted the outcome of the match halfway into the fight but it was still fun watching them beat each other up. If you love Banderas and Harrelson then you might like this movie more than I do, but if u don't, don't see it. Last words, I wouldn't buy it.

The fight scenes in this moive were very good but the lack of action and the boring drive to the fight made this film not as good as it could have been. Boxing fans will recognize lots of big named extras at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where the big fight scene takes palce. I enjoyed the soundtrack very much too.

This movie was a good rental but nothing you would want to watch a second time or own.

Cesar (Antonio Banderas) and Vince (Woody Harrelson) are great friends and not-so-great boxers who get a chance to salvage their careers in a highly publicized Las Vegas extravaganza. But there's a catch: The two guys have to fight each other. Brimming with vividly drawn characters and delightfully idiosyncratic dialogue, this latest effort by writer-director Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham," "Tin Cup") is a profanely funny shaggy-dog story with a surprisingly affecting emotional undercurrent. The under-rated Lolita Davidovich shines as Grace, the smart and sexy woman loved by both boxers.

Keep Your Right Up (1987)

Keep Your Right UpLike so much of Godard, the photographic quality is wonderful and it has been so difficult to see good home video copies of his movies past "Weekend" (and even before). This blu-ray is a great improvement over the dingy Facets version and brings the imagery and the feelings behind it alive.

4 stars for the film, I've got the Facets edition and the subtitles on that are difficult to read at times, I would gladly snatch this Olive Films edition up if I knew that that problem wouldn't be an issue. Judging by other Olive releases I have it probably won't have a subtitle option, but beggars can't be choosers I guess. Thanks Olive Films for releasing JLG, may there be more in the future, for example British Sounds, King Lear, and Wind from the East to name a few.

American: The Bill Hicks Story (2011)

American: The Bill Hicks StoryIn the booklet included with the new Blu-ray "American: The Bill Hicks Story", Mary Hicks, Bill Hicks' mother, is quoted as saying "When he got sick, Bill wanted me to help him file all of his photographs, and he showed me Hendrix and Dylan documentaries. I said, 'Bill, why are you showing me all of this?' and he said 'In case someone comes mom, and they want to make one about me.'" After watching this documentary on the late and brilliant comedian one has to wonder if the film makers would have been better off consulting Mrs. Hicks on the basics of telling compelling stories. As fascinating a subject as Hicks unquestionably is, this documentary proves to be an extremely disappointing dusting over of Hicks' career combined with an irritating level of gloss and flashy editing techniques which show a lack of respect for the subject in favor of displaying art school editing prowess.

The problem in reviewing a documentary such as "American" is many fans of Bill Hicks already know the back story of his life and career. There have been very good documentaries and books focused on this subject that do a fine job of divulging personal stories and anecdotes, and there are many bootleg videos and even commercially available dvd's that show Hicks in action on stage. "American" chooses to pick from these readily available sources to show the viewer the kind of comedian and voice he was. There are a few more rare performances shown, and those clips are definitely the highlight in this film, but for the most part one can't help but feel that old news is being rehashed constantly.

All of the interviews in "American" are with Hicks' family, friends, and fellow local comedians at the time, and while they are all very eager to tell stories about Bill, it's hard not to notice the complete and total lack of attention that is paid to some of the bigger names that respected Hicks. People like David Letterman, Jay Leno, and the New Yorker's John Lahr are ignored in this documentary, and if anyone had a significant impact on Hicks' career it would be these three. This total lack of recognition of the bigger names surrounding Hicks' story make the interviews with his family and friends that much more vacant. Not to say that his family and friends are not interesting, because they are, but when there is so much more history and voices being ignored it makes it hard to counteract other points of view that may not be so biased.

What leaves the biggest distaste in the mouth about "American" is the crow-barring of the editing and graphical style. The film makers obviously had a gimmick up their sleeves with how they wanted to show this story, and it takes so much away from the subject that by the end of the film you're left wondering if they film was about Bill Hicks or this new and wacky editing tool. All of Hicks' family photos are interspersed with cartoony and slick visuals that flat out annoy. During the entirety of the film the viewer will desperately wait for a moment that is just raw video footage instead of Hicks being portrayed as a cartoon figure reciting his comedy. More than that, though, you really have a palpable feeling that more time was spent in the editing and animating room than focusing on Hicks and his legacy. There is a ton to be said about Hicks by many different voices, and when you gloss over this fact with flashy animations all substance goes out the window. It's hard to imagine Hicks would be happy if this documentary ended up being the only film based on his life.

Bill Hicks is a precious subject. There is a reason why more and more people each year flock to his mind and words. He was an incredibly sensitive, hilarious, thought-provoking, and engaged person. This documentary does little to reflect that, sadly. It's hard to give a two-star review to a subject that is so brilliant, but any time more attention is brought to Hicks can only be a good thing. There are many other ways to discover Hicks and what he had to say, and this documentary should not be one that you consider. Start with his albums. "Dangerous" first, then "Relentless", followed by "Arizona Bay", and finally "Rant In E Minor". These albums are the only introduction you will ever need. As far as other documentaries about Hicks go, the Comedy Central produced "It's Just A Ride" is far more competent and telling than "American". It features interviews with both his friends and family as well as the more famous names that were there as Hicks rose to fame. I will also point out that the blu-ray edition features hours of extra content including interviews and performances which make this purchase a little more justifiable.

Understanding Hicks is sitting down and giving him your full and undivided attention. Part of the problem with "American" is that Hicks is reduced to soundbites and one-liners that were never Hicks' forte. When Hicks came on stage he told stories, weaving them together with other stories, coming back to them, referencing earlier jokes, and accosting his audience with declarations of love and concern. You cannot wrap up the Bill Hicks experience in a soundbite. Experiencing Hicks live meant that you had to ingest, absorb, and ruminate. Otherwise you just wouldn't get it. The quality of "American" is on par of a passing fan without much interest in the comedian; someone who may chuckle a bit at his stories but hold no interest in Hicks beyond a surface level curiosity, and ultimately not understand the bigger picture. While I can accept this probably isn't the case with the film makers here, they certainly don't convince to the contrary. Bill Hicks' message deserves much more than that.

Writing from Austin, Texas (Bill Hick's home base), I must say I am saddened and outraged that this release has not been made available here in the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is no surprise that this is a UK import they appreciated him more over there then they ever did here. Jolly good! I doubt this will ever get a stateside NTSC release. If you have a way to play PAL DVDs, then this is manna from heaven for any Bill Hicks fan. Kudos to the film makers for this awesome tribute to Mr. William Melvin Hicks! The graphics are unique and the film is a true testament to the impact Bill Hicks has had and continues to have as his words ring truer everyday.

If you consider yourself a fan of the late Bill Hicks then this is a must see documentary. Very well put together as you get a chronological order of the events that took place on his rise to stardom. Included some early life and behind the scene details of Hicks' trials and tribulations. I thought the beginning of the film was a little slow but things quickly picked up as Hick's career started to bloom. Production did a good job including many of Bill's early and late footage of his shows. Fan or not, I think no one will be disappointed watching this film. Its unfortunate that we do not have enough people like Bill Hicks to invoke thought as well as put a comical light on issues that may normally bring about negative feelings. R.I.P.

I saw it tonight on its second US release after NYC and before LA, in a small bar in Denton, Texas, surrounded by about 50 Bill Hicks fans, and if you get a chance to see it like that, do so. Next best, invite a few fans over to watch it, and rent it as Video on Demand.

It is an outstanding documentary, and it deserves to win all sorts of awards. And for true fans who think they have all the CDs and videos, you'll find enough new material to satisfy you as well.

Where are you now, Bill, when we need you so much? You're in this movie, and maybe you can still inspire people to stand up and be counted.

I am a very big fan of Bill Hicks, and I think that the man was a visionary years ahead of his time. This documentary however seemed to shed less insight into his past than it did give the opinions of his friends. I know that having read the book, seen the Sane Man and other Bill Hicks DVD and that there probably isn't a heck of a lot more to learn so my expectations may have been too high. I'd say that this is worth renting but I'd stray awy from purchasing it unless you are a mega-fan buying it to fulfill a completionist urge.

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life 30th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life 30th Anniversary EditionAlthough this is probably the most inconsistent film that Monty Python made, it's still fantastic. It ends up being a series of sketches loosely tied together around the meaning of life. Some are the absolute highlights of the Monty Python canon (e.g. the sex education scene and the disgusting Mr. Creosote), while others are much less successful. This was essentially the last material made by the Python troupe.

This HD-DVD release contains the exact same features as the recent 2-disc DVD special edition. The extra features are superb with a hilarious and insightful commentary by director Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who aren't afraid to admit its faults. The trouble with this release is that the film is now over 20 years old and was shot with a relatively low budget so it doesn't look that good to start with. So by getting the HD-DVD you're just seeing the graininess and clunky special effects more clearly. If you already have the DVD there's really no need to get this, but if you're looking to buy it for the first time and you have an HD-DVD player then it's a no-brainer...

...and yes, the meaning of life is revealed in this movie!

Up to their old tricks again, the Pythons finally brought their sketch comedy to the big screen. Putting together a series of unconnected skits with a common theme, they actually pulled it off, though most said it could never be done. As with all of their work, this movie contains several lines that fans will repeat over and over. "Every sperm is sacred!" Most of the skits went down as some of their greatest work, from Cleese teaching Sex in a private school by demonstrating it with his wife in front of the class, to the grossest scene ever performed in cinema, "Mr. Creosote." Absolutely a must-see for anyone with even the faintest of senses of humor.

This DVD presentation is also very solid, including a Making Of feature that lets the personalities of the individuals show through, including Cleese's disdain for doing this film. Some of the extras can be ignored, but I still found myself sitting down for over two hours to check them all out, and I was not disappointed.

The Movie Itself is in my own personal opinion the best of the films by the British comedy troupe Monty Python which included (the late) Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. The group made a total of four motion pictures aside from their widely popular television sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus. This was the last of those films and was released in 1983. The whole plot to this movie as you guessed even if you're not a Python fan is obviously about The Meaning of Life. And it's pieced down into 8 stages with a little bit of fun thrown in before, during and after. The film has a lot of musical numbers that are absolutely hilarious and extremely catchy to boot (refer to my audio quality review for song titles).

If you're a fan of British sketch comedy or even Canadian sketch like The Kids in the Hall you're going to love this if you've never seen it before. This is sketch comedy at it's finest in the form of a film. The film was directed by Terry Jones who was a member of the comedy troupe and obviously acted quiet a bit in this as well as bossed everyone around. It's obvious that some people will clearly argue the best Python film would be "The Quest for the Holy Grail" or "Life of Brian." They are all great films by me and I look forward to the three others eventually making their way to High Definition disc release. This is encouraging to see one being released you have to admit either way.

Video Quality on this release is presented in 1080p VC-1 encoded on a 30gb disc. First off, yes this is an improvement over the DVD version(s) of this film available in the past but at the same time it's not really the best video transfer to High Def. Don't get me wrong, I mean yes this film is from 1983 for starters and has it's obvious original film grain to it and that's cool in it's own way. The thing I'm really trying to say is that don't expect it to look amazing. Just instead expect it to look better than before. There are some artifacts and pixilatation problems in rare occasions but nothing really to complain about that much.

Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. This is only a small improvement over Dolby Digital 5.1 on the latest DVD release of this film. As Python Eric Idle says in one of the bonus materials "the film is a disguised musical" so the songs of this film are really important to the sound mix. I mean after all who can forget such classics as "Isn't it awfully nice to have a penis?", "Every Sperm is Sacred", "Galaxy Song", "Christmas in Heaven" and of course the opening track "It's the Meaning of Life."

Bonus Materials are primarily all in 16:9 (Widescreen) standard definition and ported over from the latest DVD release of the film. There's loads of material here, first off an introduction from Eric Idle before the film, audio Commentary by both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. There's also another audio commentary track called "Soundtrack for the Lonely" which is sure to keep you company if "Terry and Terry" don't.

"Snipped Bits" (18 minutes) is basically deleted scenes with occasional commentary introductions or comment from Terry Jones. There's some laughs here but you see why some scenes were obviously deleted. "The Meaning of Making The Meaning of Life" (49 minutes) is your obvious "making of" documentary featuring interviews with the entire Monty Python... cast (even clips of the late Graham Chapman). Eric Idle says "... the film is a disguised musical." in this and we also learn that John Cleese isn't too fond of this film. He argues "Life of Brian" is the better of the Python films. Some would argue "Holy Grail" is but that's to be debated elsewhere, not in my review of bonus materials. "Education Tips" (6 minutes) is a series of skits done by John Cleese, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. I like Cleese's last character "Dr. Ken Enron Chaney." He cracks me up with just his name alone but there's some really hilarious stuff here overall. Including Michael Palin as the world's worst voice over narrator. It's ironic because he actually does voice over narration now on a nature television show.

"Un Film De John Cleese" (1 minute) is absolutely hilarious. It's nothing more than his edit of the film with only him in it. "Written, produced, directed, conceived, edited and probably projected by John Cleese." To only be a minute long it's definitely worth the minute for a good laugh. "Remastering A Masterpiece" is a spoof restoration documentary narrated by Michael Palin. It offers some goofy interviews with Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam as they try to restore the film by washing it. Gilliam and Jones both seem to have no luck as Jones resorts to a local British laundromat washing machine. Eventually Terry Gilliam gives up and says "I hate this film!" I guess this explains the video quality rating I gave this HD DVD doesn't it? Just kidding. There's a bit more material to be found but they really don't prove to be worth watching to even the most die-hard fan like myself. This is about where it stops for the bonus materials worth watching on this release. Nothing too bad but it is nothing more than the bonus materials from the DVD release ported over.

The members of Monty Python apparently decided to pull out all the stops when they made their final motion picture. Even more bawdy, naughty, reckless, and wickedly deprived, MONTY PYTHON'S THE MEANING OF LIFE pulls no punches and takes no prisoners as it explores, unravels, and tramples upon the stages of life, from birth to death. This film is Python with ADD, rumbling and bumbling from one sketch to the next. And it's darn funny.

For me, the film hit a homerun with its opening short feature, "The Crimson Permanent Assurance Company," followed shortly by a grand musical number--a hilarious spoof on Catholicism--entitled, "Every Sperm Is Sacred." By now, the viewer is tweaked, alert, enthralled, giddy, and laughing. Most of the ensuing sketches are firecrackers of irreverent humor and relentless satire. Alas, the movie ended rather anticlimatically, and the film's overall unevenness prohibited this reviewer from giving it five stars.

If you like Monty Python, you'll enjoy this film. If you're unfamiliar with Python, yet willing to get smacked between the eyes with X-treme comedy, give THE MEANING OF LIFE a try. (Not on a full stomach; the "Mr. Creosote" sketch might have you reaching for some Alka-Setzer.) Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam give new meaning to the meaning of life!

It would take much more than 1000 words to comment on this movie. So I thought I'd concetrate on the restaurant sketch which many reviewers didn't seem to understand of whom some wrote favorable reviews and some unfavorable.

The restaurant room represents planet Earth. That monstrous guy represents man ( homo sapiens ) while the rest of the people represent the other living things on our planet. The vomit signifies enviromental pollution.Although we try to contain that ( the man asks for a bucket so he can puke inside ) we're not very succesful. One of the results of that is that species which have lived on this planet for millions of years dissappear ( the people who live the restaurant room ).Finally the waiter who tries to convince the customer to eat this extra mint at the end ( which leads to his explosion ) signifies the role of advertising which constantly tries to convince us to buy things we don't really need. This the rough outline of the main ideas.

However the purpose of the artists is not to express in symbolic terms things we already know but rather to have us look at ourselves in a different light. We tend to admire our species a lot but what Monty Pythons suggest is that not only we're not admirable but rather monstrous and disgusting like Mr. Creosote. That's because we live in disharmony with our enviroment unlike the rest of the living things. Not only that but we also have a destorted view of the world. We tend to view things like vomit or excrement as disgusting. But these don't really pollute the environment.Actually excrement is quite important for something called the nitrogen cycle in nature. On the other hand we feel totally at ease with say plastic although this really harms the environment and takes a very long time to dissolve.

Real satire ( which is much more than making fun of things ) is supposed to make you think and this is what this sketch does.It is offensive but that's how it should be.It tries to grab us by the shoulders , metaphorically speaking of course , shake us and shout at us:"Do you see what you have become ?".I must say that although when I first saw it I was holding my sides now I don't think it's so funny anymore.

Let me finish on a slight personal tone.In the beginning of the second part of "The miracle of birth" Yorkshire is described as part of the third world.I have been in living in Leeds ( West Yorkshire ) for over 1+1/2 years now and I can attest to the fact that most streets do indeed look like they belong to a third world country !

Unfaithful (2002)

UnfaithfulThis sensual and somber drama about infidelity stars Diane Lane and Richard Gere as a married couple headed for tragedy. Connie (Lane) and Edward (Gere) are successful suburbanites with a seemingly happy marriage, until Connie meets an attractive younger man and begins an affair. Edward wonders what's going on, hires a private detective, and gets the answer he suspected all along.

Lane is memorable as the guilt-ridden wife who is obsessed with her lover. She is lovely, mature, and honest in her portrayal and deserved her nomination for Best Actress. Gere is almost a supporting actor here, but he is wonderful playing an average guy. Olivier Martinez plays Lane's paramour. His character was fairly one-dimensional and could have been developed further, but he was very good in the role.

The first time I saw the movie, I thought it was relatively dull because of its relentlessly low-key presentation and leisurely pace. On the second viewing, however, I found it a real winner. There are long periods without dialogue, where the camera focuses on facial nuances. The silence gives one a chance to appreciate the fine acting. The photography is excellent, from wide shots of dirty urban streets to warm glimpses of home. The musical score was lovely, lilting and romantic. "Unfaithful" is erotic and tender, with some surprises and an excellent ending.

There is a certain beauty contained within this film that makes it beyond a film about infidelity and its consequences. Diane Lane didn't get my attention until the recent "The Glass House." As a new fan, I had to see 'Unfaithful'...her performance is nothing short of remarkable.

The story revolves around a 'happily married', middle-aged couple living in the suburbs of NY with one small son. Their life is the picture of the 'American dream', until one day, Mrs. Sumner (Diane Lane) goes into the city on business and cosmically collides with the much younger Paul Martel (Martinez). When he invites her in to clean up her skinned knee a most deadly affair begins.

What makes this movie different from all the other films with themes such as betrayal, etc, is that we see the struggle and transformation Diane's character makes. Several times we see Diane reflect on her various 'visits' to Martinez and all at once her face displays pleasure, pain, and paranoia. She brings likability to a character we should hate. Richard Gere is one of my favorite actors and I deeply respect him for taking a 'backseat' role in this film. His character torments himself wondering why his wife would possibly want to cheat on him, as he thought he was providing a perfect life.

Added suspense and thrills come about when Gere starts to suspect and eventually finds out about the affair. We then see the direct effect affairs have on families. The murder mystery was thrown in more for entertainment value but the true artistic aspect remains in the adultress' mind.

We've seen affairs start from heartbreak, drunkeness, seduction...any reason other than this film's...boredom. From boredom and seduction we get obsession, we see Diane become addicted to her breakaway from daily life. For those of you who love Richard Gere as much as I do, you really have to bite your lip watching him getting cheated on! However, there is great remorse as Connie (Diane) really does love her husband, but someone dies before the affair is ended. This movie truly remains with its viewers. I recommend picking up the haunting tracks 'Moby Rushing' and 'E.S. Posthumus Nara' to reexperience the emotions captured through watching 'Unfathful.' This is a definete must see!

Adrian Lyne is not known as the king of subtlety, as in his "Fatal Attraction" or "Flashdance." He showed remarkable restraint in "Lolita"; giving the film a beautiful and reverent patina of intelligence and honor especially in Jeremy Iron's portrayal of Humbert. Why the major distributors did not take on the mantle of "Lolita" will forever remain a mystery.

In Lyne's newest film, "Unfaithful," he finally comes into his own with a film that is not only provocative but also one that resonates with clear headed thought and remarkably subtle performances.

"Unfaithful" is the story of Connie and Richard Sumner (Diane Lane and Richard Gere), happily married for eleven years with one son living in White Plains, New york. One day, Connie is in NYC for business in the middle of a hurricane-like windstorm when she literally runs into Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez). After Connie scuffs her knees in a fall, Paul invites her into his apartment in Soho for some tea and thus begins a torrid, ultra-sexual love affair. Everything up to this point is Lyne-like with Lane and Martinez never looking more beautiful and sensual in their entire careers amid scenes of photographically perfect lovemaking.

But Lyne throws a wrench into his usual mix of infidelity amd marital indiscretion by adding a murder and thriller plot that adds dimension and breadth to the film. Is it any wonder that this cast was interested in doing this film? Especially Richard Gere who is extremely picky about the projects he undertakes.

Even though Diane Lane has been making movies since she was twelve, she does wonders with her character here. Her Connie is in love with her husband and her life but simply cannot resist the charms of her "amour fou" Paul. There are no big decisions to be made here, Connie is bowled over by Paul and does almost nothing to resist his charms...he is French, handsome and young after all.

The reprecussions of Connie's affair are played out with Hitchcockian suspense yet without Hitchcock's 50's sensibilities and Calvinist modes of retribution. The ending is left remarkably open to interpretation.

Even though Diane Lane has been making movies for 30 years, she has never had a better part than that of Connie and she makes the most of every one of her scenes. She is a revelation in her reticent yet all-consuming realtionship with Paul and with her intelligent and sympathetic dealings with her family. We truly care for her and her situation: she transforms what could have been a negative part into something positive and life-affirming. Both Gere and Martinez are also first rate and empathetic: we care for both even though they are far from perfect human beings.

Adrian Lyne has had a rocky career with several lows ("Lolita") and few highs ("Fatal Attraction"). "Unfaithful" shows us all what a fine, accomplished, subtle film maker he is and what a diligent and persuasive director of actors he can be.

The three main actors, Diane Lane, Richard Gere and Olivier Martinez, do an absolutely wonderful job with this movie.

This is not a female version of Fatal Attraction as some have suggested. At least I did not feel it was so.

BASIC STORY:

Diane Lane is the happily married mid-forties woman who accidentally meets a young incredibly attractive man in his 20s who, is obviously attracted and interested in her. Her husband Richard Gere is a cuddly lovable, happily married and successful man. What really blows you away, is why would she stray? Oh yeah, this young man is drop dead gorgeous, sexy and is patiently interested in her.. Deadly combination.

This young man, is like light to the moth of Diane Lane's character and she keeps coming back despite the potential harm to her family. Since she is doing such a shoddy job of hiding her involvement, in her intensity to see this young man, Richard Gere's character begins to suspect something.

INTERESTING COUNTERPOINT:

At one point in the movie, Diane Lane's character is seen by some friends in the young man's neighborhood and she is forced to have lunch with them to allay suspicions. Olivier Martinez's character comes to the restaurant to have a dailliance in the back with Diane Lane's character, while she is supposedly in the ladies room. However, these ladies in conversation make it quite clear when they see Olivier Martinez that they feel he is wildly attractive. One even goes as far to say, she would go to bed with him in a second. The other, is wilting while recalling a former affair that she has had and its devastation. Diane Lane's character is forced to see both sides of the coin.

ACTING AND ACTION ARE INTENSE:

There are some pretty steamy scenes in this movie. Diane Lane does an excellent job also of showing both her mixed feelings and reckless abandon. You see her maniacly pursuing this forbidden relationship, once it is is started. Richard Gere is great as the devoted husband. He is playful and lovable, but not stupid. He does everything he can to understand what is going on, until he has proof in his hands. Olivier Martinez, is one very attractive and compeling young man. I'm sure we will see him even more in Hollywood (in English speaking films) now that he has done this movie. He is wonderful as the young lover.

I won't go further than this, but the movie takes some twists you don't expect and some you do. Wonderful job. Very entertaining.

I think this movie will make some people think. It could start some very interesting conversations.

This is the movie that everyone should view before deciding whether to engage in an adulterous affair. Connie Summer (Diane Lane) is a woman with far too much time on her hands. Her husband Edward (Richard Gere) easily earns enough money to support the family in an upper middle class lifestyle. Connie only has one

boy and no serious avocations to focus upon. She is an attractive and bored woman approaching middle age. In other words, Connie is a walking time bomb waiting to go off. Connie literally runs into the much younger Paul during a windy afternoon in Manhattan. One thing leads to another, and eventually Connie ends up in Paul's bed. The odds are highly against this become a lasting relationship, but Connie enjoys the lustful encounters and isn't particularly interested in thinking about the distant future. The pleasure sectors of her brain now dominate the analytical. Practical questions can wait to be answered on another day.

Edward wasn't born yesterday and quickly realizes that something is amiss. We follow the unfolding events knowing full well something tragic is about to occur. The dialogue is near perfect, and the acting superb. Diane Lane is brilliant and this may be the best work that Gere has done in a number of years. Director Adrian Lyne's approach is thoroughly secular. These characters display no religious inclinations. Nonetheless, the awfulness of adultery comes across loud and clear. This is an act of betrayal that almost certainly will severely damage, if not completely destroy a marital relationship. Do you really wish to take that risk? After seeing Unfaithful, you will likely say it's not worth it. I can't quite give this film five stars, but four and a half seem appropriate.

Taint, The (Blu-ray + DVD Combo) (2010)

Taint, TheI actually purchased THE TAINT before the film was signed over to Troma, snagged it for $5 and I would have easily paid twice that after seeing it. When this release was announced on Troma, I immediately put in my pre-order. I had to order the Blu-ray for this hilarious little indie production. Sure, I own 3 copies of this film now...it's just that fun.

THE TAINT is gory, offensive and laugh-out-loud funny. If your idea of entertainment is crude jokes, rubber genitals, exploding heads (see rubber genitals), more exploding heads, an amazing '80's style work-out montage, a wild face-ripping and an insane concept matched only by BLACK DYNAMITE's. Everything about this film is fun, from the gorgeous artwork to the impressive original synth score. This is what GOOD indie genre cinema is all about.

The Taint is an independent film from Richmond Virginia made by Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson and some of their friends and other actors. It's a hilarious horror comedy about a penis enlarger medicine that gets released into the water system. And if a male drinks the water he turns into a misogynistic maniac trying to murder as many women as he can. One man Phil O Genny Hasn't yet drank the water and is the only one who has a chance of surviving the terrible condition of becoming a raging misogynistic person. This is an amazing cult feature with allot of funny scenes and allot of great gore and I'm glad Troma bought it . It is one of my favorite movies of all time and it's a great horror movie.

In recent years, the trend of grindhouse revivalism has spread like wildfire throughout the fringes of the film industry. It seems like, since the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez anthology film "Grindhouse" brought the term, and the style, back into view, contemporary takes on the cheesy, over-the-top spectacle of the midnite-movie fare of the 1970s and 80s have begun popping up with an increased frequency. This new crop of grindhouse features differs from the old guard--low-budget limitations have been augmented by a deliberate tongue-in-cheek attitude, a knowing irony that deconstructs the style as it lovingly pays homage. Sometimes, this knowing irony falls flat, becoming too self-aware and too self-referential to be funny--but in the best cases, it only improves the film in question, adding a deep dimension of comedy to the surface, creating greater capacity for laughs and spectacle than even the heights of the style's original peak period.

The Taint, directed by Dan Nelson and Drew Bolduc and distributed by Troma Entertainment, is a great representation of when this type of film is done right. With a plot that lends itself to untold hilarious possibilities (it envisions a society in which men have turned into twisted, misogynistic barbarians by way of a taint in the water supply,) some very clever writing, deliberately over-the-top scenarios, and aesthetic sensibilities that update the exploitation-shockers of old without appearing trite or handed-down, The Taint is an incredibly solid seventy minutes of tight, campy fun. It has humor that's as dirty as it is clever, imagery that's as shocking as it is hysterical, practical effects that amaze with their ingenuity, and an atmosphere that stays fresh and original even while putting its influences on display. With appropriately-tasteless male nudity, and plenty of blood and guts on display, it's certainly not for the faint-of-heart, but for lovers of modern grindhouse reinventions along the lines of Hanger, Hobo With a Shotgun or Father's Day, it's definitely a treat to watch.

As is typical with Troma releases, the package is well put-together beyond just the feature itself. The package, which comes with both DVD and Blu-Ray copies of the film, is adorned with beautiful cover art, and makes a great shelf-piece for collectors. There are also plenty of special features to enjoy after the film is over, including some great deleted scenes, commentary tracks from the directors and the cast, behind-the-scenes photos, and several trailers. Everything is crisp and pleasing to look at, and while the sound in the main feature is occasionally inconsistent, it's better than one might expect for a low-budget film. Troma has spared no effort in putting this package together, and it absolutely shows. It may not appeal to most viewers out there, but if you're looking for some tasteless schlock that's surprisingly intelligent and extremely funny, The Taint comes highly recommended.

"The Taint" is 70 minutes of pure unbridled, gory, reprehensible trash that also happens to be quite clever and a lot smarter than you might expect. When I first heard about this low budget independant Richmond Virginia lensed film and checked out some positive review around the internet, one particular quote from the Fangoria.com review stated "The Taint is exactly what happens when smart filmmakers intentionally make a stupid movie." The basic plot involves an experimental penis enlargement drug that turns men into oversexed misogynistic maniacs is unleashed into the public water supply and all manners of depravity cut loose.

Considering how miniscule the bidget was, it's actually made well from a craft standpoint with the over the top gore being quite hilarious and impressive in many spaces. As I mention at the ouset of this review, the run time is just barely over 70 minutes with end credits so the movie doesn't overstay its welcome at all. It's very obvious why Troma picked the film up for distribution due to the copius amounts of male nudity, gore, bodily fluids flying about and extremely warped and politically incorrect sense of humor that permeates every moment of the film. Women may find this movie to be unwatchable but should recognize it as well done satire that isn't meant to be taking at face value at all.

It's exploitation filmmaking at a highly enjoyable level that should prove to be a huge hit among brave cinephiles that like their trash cinema to be a complete assault on good taste and decency while also exhibiting a level of talent and craft that makes me very interested in what the filmmakers plan on doing next.

The blu-ray DVD combo pack from Troma presents the movie in excellent 1.78 anamorphic widescreen that is very clean and detailed particularly on the blu-ray edition. The audio is regular 2 channel lossy stereo but everything sounds fine. Extras include two commentary tracks, some deleted scenes, a behind the scenes slide show and the usual Troma trailers too.

Highly recommended!

Harold & KumarMy husband loves the Harold and Kumar movies, so when I saw that there was a Blu-ray edition out with a collectible metal case, I was thrilled! He had them on DVD and is slowly swapping his movies from DVD to Blu-ray. I bought this for him for Christmas and it he loved it! My only problem is that the metal case was slightly dented... but that probably happened during shipping.

Safety Geeks: SVI 3D (Blu-ray 3D) (2011)

Safety Geeks: SVI 3DI liked Safety Geeks. It is an independent looking thing but frankly it's unique and being a fan of Adult Swim and Monty Python humor I thought I'd give it a try.

Pleasant surprise it's good and it something to actually watch on my 3D TV

Good laughs and cast

Very funny with a little something for everyone. I really did laugh out loud. Well written with solid comedic performances.

I loved it!

SVI 3D is about comic adventures of a semi-elite force of safety experts; the P.O.S.H. (Professional Occupational Safety Hazard) team. Obsessed with making the world and some bits of Canada safer, the team investigates inane accidents to find out what went wrong and who is to blame. Ironically, their involvement causes far more damage than they prevent, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction in their wake. Fans of Monty Python humor and Adult Swim programs will thoroughly enjoy this deftly acted, cleverly animated, 3D comedy. Stereoscopy News

Safety Geeks: SVI from the creators and stars of Invention with Brian Forbes, David Beeler (Reginald Syngen-Smithe) & Tom Konkle (Budwin W. Yaker). Also starring Brittney Powell (Dr. Randi Minky), Benton Jennings (Manservant Hopkins) and Mary Cseh (Sparky Van Der Graaf). The first episode introduces the main characters, as well as starts the story arc that continues through the following episodes. The comedic style of this web series is well written and brilliantly acted out. This series is also a most ingenious one, with its use of special effects. Jeff Elwell

Bottom Line: Raunchy, wacky and filled up to the brim with one-liners, Safety Geeks SVI is an object lesson in High Camp and a real must-watch for anyone who likes their comedy with a great, big dollop of outrageousness. Steve Spaulding

The creators have described the show as "a nice mix of surreal Adult Swim humor with a Monty Python take on CSI, Missing, Without a Trace, NCIS etc.." While I hesitate to compare anyone to Monty Python, because they are legends, that description is well stated. The show is very funny, full of one-liners, and often flying off the rails into the completely absurd. If you're an Adult Swim or Monty Python person, it should be right in your wheelhouse.

SVI follows the exploits of the P.O.S.H. (Professional Occupational Safety Hazard) team, which is made up of Reginald Syngen-Smythe (David Beeler), Budwin Yacker (Tom Konkle), Dr. Randy Minki (Brittney Powell), Sparky Van Der Graff (Mary Cseh), and Dr. Randy's amazing boobs (seriously, they get so many closeups, they deserve their own credit, their own IMDb page, and a spot as the wallpaper on my phone). EDIT: And Hopkins (Benton Jennings)! How did I forget Hopkins? He is, after all, the brains of the operation. P.O.S.H. investigates accidents and safety violations. Fortunately for us, if not the people they are investigating, along the way they cause more problems than they solve.

The first season is now complete, and follows one case of a tragic forklift accident at a warehouse store. The actions of the team range from odd, to stupid, all with huge helpings of cheese. And I mean that in the best possible way. It's all great fun to watch.

That cheesiness also extends to the look of the show. Clearly a lot of time and effort has gone into the effects used, and they take on a quality that I would call fantastically bad. That's not bad in the sense of not being good. It's bad in the sense that many of the effects are so cheesy that they are almost as absurd as the story we're watching. To that end, they fit perfectly, and just add to the experience. Brett Love

Placevine said Safety Geeks is yet another winsome, winning comedy series from the talented twosome of David Beeler and Tom Konkle, this one an ensemble effort chronicling the exasperating exploits of the P.O.S.H. (Professional Occupational Safety Hazard) team, in both 2 and 3D! The fact that they're basically a bunch of well-meaning but hopelessly incompetent misfits is the basis for their bumbling series of moronic mishaps, which all prove quite counterproductive to their professional mission statement. The troupe's over-the-circus-top antics, which include ribald riffs and goofy gore in the spirit of Monty Python, either rub your funny the bone the right or the wrong way, but there's no denying their seemingly endless supply of inspired inventiveness.

The P.O.S.H. (Professional Occupational Safety Hazard) Team as they investigate a forklift accident that took place at a "Giant Provisions," a Costco or Sam's Club type warehouse store. For safety professionals they sure cause a lot of destruction ranging from death by private plane landing (on you) to electrocution by crime scene tape. But (spoiler alert) they do solve the "case" but at what cost? I'm sure Budwin Yaker would know the penny. Speaking of...

The P.O.S.H on site Team is made up of eccentric British billionaire, Reginald Syngen-Smithe (David Beeler), the inscrutable number cruncher Budwin W. Yaker (Tom Konkle) and ex-stripper turned psychologist Randi Minky (Brittney Powell), who not only adds laughs but is the show's sex appeal. She looks like Sophia Bush's sexier older sister. Then there is the requisite support team at headquarters, crippled techie, Sparky Van Der Graaf (Mary Cseh) and Reginald's butler, the aptly named Manservant Hopkins (Benton Jennings). All the actors do a really good job. Their performances are quirky and consistent. So much delicious awkwardness.

The whole show was shot on Green Screen, which really created a unique environment. It lent its self to humor you normally only see in animated shows these days. The special effects varied from realistic to silly, which I preferred in the instances of blood spurting. I was really impressed with the whole aesthetic.

For me, most laughs came from non-sequiturs and witty one-liners, of which there are many. I occasionally cringed at the crudeness and there were some jokes that just fell flat. But I know that if I took a time machine back to 1998 and spied on myself at 16 watching this show, she would be laughing at completely different moments. There is a variety of humor in SAFETY GEEKS: SVI, something for everyone. And it definitely exemplifies Dave & Tom's credo: "silly comedy for smart people."

Verdict: In the spirit of the show, it gave me a comedic erection. One that lasted over 8 hours. So, someone tell Sparky to clear the grid and let the emergency vehicles through, please. If you didn't get the reference, you haven't watched the show. Have you seriously not watched this show yet?

From underneath the brilliant toupees of Dave & Tom comes a show that pokes relentless fun at a society increasingly over-obsessed with safety.

Thus, Safety Geeks: SVI is a parody on many levels. There are large parts of OSHA, bits of Thunderbirds, elements of Geek Squad and a massive helping of CSI. In a nutshell: a team outside all jurisdictions swoops in to investigate accidents -the twist being that they cause more damage and harm than the accident itself.

Much of the humor derives not so much from safety and lack thereof but from the wacky characters played by seasoned actors all around. The focus is mainly on the five lead characters and their particular personaes, but there is (unsurprisingly) a big spotlight on the Dr. Randi Minky character and her incongruous stripper-past, played bodyliciously by Brittney Powell (a chest... uhm... face that may be familiar to Xena and Friends viewers). Her acting is solid to say the least, but jokes in reference to her former employment and (in her own words) `heaving bosoms' are frequent and stoop a little low for comedy's sake, and few are the episode where Brittney doesn't get to bust a stripper move or point at the camera... and not with her fingers either. Naturally the hits come clicking in whenever you bring innuendos into the storyline.

Still, all the raunchiness aside (and there is some, so a few episodes may not be entirely SFW, although that depends on your work) Safety Geeks has its comedic merits.

David Beeler and Tom Konkle, two veritable Renaissance Men who besides writing, producing, editing, etc, also play their respective characters Reginald Syngen-Smythe and Budwin Yacker with plenty of mojo. David uses a whacked-out version of his `Invention` character Brian Forbes to become Reginald, the English plonka and founder of the team, while Tom is a dead-pan Oliver Hardy to David's Stan Laurel. Rounding out the crew are Reginald's seemingly out-of-place Butler Hopkins (Benton Jennings) and the deliciously too-hot-to-be-a-computer-nerd Sparky Van Der Graaf (Mary Cseh, and FYI: Brittney ain't got nuthin' on her, y'all!).

The various support-characters deserve a big shout-out as well. So far there is not a single character who stumbles over his lines or seems to distantly read a cue-card. Everyone involved give their most hilarious and they obviously had a lot of fun on the set.

Very much noteworthy is also the execution of the show. Shot entirely on green-screen, Safety Geeks is professional enough to avoid the infamous echo-effect in their sound recording, so common in most home-grown green-screen studios. The digital sets are very well done and it is a pleasure to see that it is possible to create on a small budget a massive Flying Wing and have it swoop in and blow up a bunch of cars in the process, without it looking distractingly fake.

Safety Geeks is effectively a Theater of the Absurd, much like the other shows by the same creative writing team of Invention with Brian Forbes and Archaeology of Comedy. Albeit not everyone's cup of tea, it has mainstream appeal with its one-lines, non-sequiturs and black humor.

And for everyone else, there are heaving bosoms. -Alec Corday Reviewer

The Brothers Grimm (2005)

The Brothers GrimmI've heard a few people say they were disappointed after seing this film; they had expected better. I think a lot of people have the wrong expectations when it comes to The Brothers Grimm: in the theatre I see lots of people of whom I can tell from moment one they will be disappointed.

Mothers with young children who actually think this movie has anything to do with the traditional fairy tales; this movie is NOT for children! If I were 7 I'd wet my bed for days after seing The Brothers Grimm. Young boys and girls on dates, all expecting an easy digestive romcom with an obvious storyline and no depth (I don't know how they got there but they did). That is NOT the case. If you want Finding Nemo, go see Finding Nemo. If you want American Pie, go see American Pie. But don't complain about The Brothers Grimm, because it is an absolute masterpiece!

The storyline is entertaining (one of the few movies that doesn't make you go "when's the intermission already? I need to pee!"), the director paints an amazing picture with his brilliant set, the characters are adorable and the actors do an amazing job. There wasn't a moment I saw them acting instead of being. One thing that really caught my attention was the role of Angelika (by Lena Heady) which reminded me in every single way of Keira Knightley's version of Guinevere in King Arthur in a good way though.

Overall, I think this movie is a serious tribute to the fantasy genre, and I think that people who can appreciate that will love this. Don't look for logic, don't look for unexpected plots like in The Village and The Others, don't expect American Pie jokes and FOR GOD'S SAKE don't take your little children with you to this movie.

This is a brilliant movie that can hold it's own and if you ask me it deserves lots and lots of attention and awards.

YOU WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE IF YOU LIKE... Sleepy Hollow (with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci), King Arthur (with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley), Pirates of the Caribbean (with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom).

I recently heard someone say they were disappointed with Gilliam's "update" of the Famous Brothers and their Fables. Whoever said that doesn't understand Gilliam's modus operandi. He is a genius at creating brand new worlds(Time Bandits and Brazil) and Bringing old Folktales and fantasy stories back to their roots while still making them entertaining(Baron Munchausen).

The same is true of the Brothers Grimm. He offers a unique spin on Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and quite distinctly the Gingerbead Man, but at the same time retains the essence of the original stories. Fariy Tales are DARK! They were meant to frighten Children into BEHAVING!

I also appreciated the emphasis on Character. With the Exception of Peter Stormare's hammy torturer, the Cast is Excellent. Matt Damon is always good, but Heath Ledger Steals the film with his portrayal of Jacob Grimm. And of course Jonathan Pryce is always enjoyable.

My biggest complaint though is a rather nasty scene involving a kitten. Gilliam can at times have an extremely nasty sense of humor and this was particularly unpleasant.

Gilliam's films are not for all tastes I confess. But I thouroughly enjoyed this film. I'll never look at the gingerbread man the same way again.

The Brothers Grimm is a suspenseful light-hearted ghost story in the cinematic tradition of such movies as Pirates of the Caribbean, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Sleepy Hollow. The brothers, played by Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, couldn't be more enchanting in their roles in this fairy tale movie. Jacob, played by spectacle toting Heath Ledger, is the lovable underdog, an impractical poet who wears his gold heart on his sleeve. Wilhelm of course, couldn't be more different as the devilishly dashing woman-chasing lead and older brother.

The film is set in French occupied Germany and is quite amusing for history buffs. There, Jacob and Wilhelm have a run in with the French army. They've roamed from town to town making up fairy tales, but not only in the story sense! Jacob largely follows Wilhelm around documenting the folk tales of the various villages they weave their `magic' around. When they are captured, the scenes involving the French general (Jonathan Pryce) are classically macabre in every senseI don't want to spoil any surprises so you'll have to see the movie to find out why. Caravaldi, a captain in that army, played by Peter Stormare, becomes a permanant pest and an unexpected side-kick. The character is completely absurd with an Italian accent, hilarious yet creepy.

With Caravaldi, the brothers find themselves embroiled in a real mystery when all the girls in the village disappear. The townsfolk are strange but the boys eventually warm up to the female lead, Angelika (Lena Headey) who leads them through the forest and tells them of the folk tales of her youth. There's a little bit of that fairy tale magic mixed in with some European folklore which makes the movie interesting from an anthropological perspective... it makes you wonder what our folktales say of our history. The movie makes us imagine that these fairy or folk tales were real events, documented faithfully by the trusting Jacob. And there in the forest the brothers discover the truth behind the girls' disappearance, the connection with Angelika's missing father, and a wolf that has terrorized the forest.

The Brothers Grimm is spooky and maybe a little scary/disturbing for young children but don't see the movie expecting a thrillerafter all the movie is based on Grimm's fairytales. It's a lot of fun trying to guess which fairy tale is being alluded to in the various scenes as the Brothers seek to rid village of their haunting. And it is interesting how the movie weaves each story into another. There are great questions as to what is real and what is not... is it supernatural, a trick, magic?

Renowned director/screenwriter, Terry Gilliam, brought the tale, featuring the two legendary authors, Jacob (Heath Ledger) and Wilhelm (Matt Damon) Grimm, to the screen in 2005's "The Brothers Grimm".

The movie starts by introducing us to the brothers as young children in the late 1700s when it's discovered that Jacob, (played by Jeremy Robson in this scene) has sold the family's cow for a handful of magic beans. Several years later the two brothers have grown into men who travel from town to town throughout Germany getting rid of unsavory creatures who seem to be plaguing the towns. However, it's soon realized that the pair, along with a couple of friends, are con artists who have constructed everything from the evil characters (in one case a witch) to the elaborate "rescue" of the town.

Napoleon's General, Delatombe, (Jonathan Pryce) is not pleased. When he threatens to execute the two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm have no choice but to travel to Marbaden and solve the mystery behind the disappearance of several of the village's children. With Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), one of Delatombe's henchmen, to keep an eye on them, the brothers meet Angelika (Lena Headley), who agrees to escort them into the nearby forest. The group soon finds the tower that legend says is home to the Mirror Queen (Monica Bellucci) and who has great powers over the forest. But is the legend true? What other secrets does the forest hold and how do they connect to the disappearance of the children?

Terry Gilliam has directed and/or co-wrote a number of films including "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998), "Brazil" (1985), "Time Bandits" (1981) and several of the Monty Python features. "The Brothers Grimm" was one of those films that I had high hopes for and really wanted to like it a lot. However, the movie, while good in some parts, seems to be lacking in others.

There were two things I especially liked about "The Brothers Grimm". The film was visually appealing. The way it was shot was reminiscent of "Sleepy Hollow". I also liked the way that familiar stories from the Grimm brothers were incorporated into the movie; for example "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Little Red Riding Hood" and a little bit of "Hansel and Gretel".

The idea of the two Grimm brothers as con artists traveling from town to town, swindling people out of their money by exorcising fake creatures, until they come across the real thing was great. Unfortunately, the movie seems to stray from this and eventually gets scattered in several directions with the brothers in situations with Delatombe, Cavaldi and the Mirror Queen as well as a side story about Angelika and her family. Don't be surprised if you find yourself exhausted from trying to keep up with everything that's going on! (You wouldn't believe how hard it was coming up with the movie summary above!)

I did like Heath Ledger's and Matt Damon's take on the two brothers. But I felt that the characters could have been developed more. We really don't get to know a lot about them. Perhaps a little more insight into their backgrounds would have made the characters more compelling. Also the possible romance with Angelika just didn't go anywhere.

While I have liked Jonathan Pryce's and Peter Stormare's previous works (Pryce was Governor Swann in "Pirates of the Caribbean" (2003) and Stormare appeared in "Chocolat" (2000) and "Armageddon" (1998)), I felt their characters were somewhat shallow, bordering on annoying. A lot of screen time also isn't given to the evil Mirror Queen who is supposed to be the Grimm's main opponent. Maybe without the Delatombe and Cavaldi side story, more time could have been spent on developing the character of the Mirror Queen, letting everyone know just how much of a menace she was.

"The Brothers Grimm" isn't the worst movie to come out of Hollywood. But, unfortunately, it failed to grasp the opportunity to become a great one.

For the person who wrote animal cruelty. There is such things as fake cats, cg graphics and robotics. They are not that stupid to do that to a real cat, so don't push your peta beliefs on everyone else. If you want to boycott it because you don't agree with it then fine, but don't force everyone else to.

Yes I did think that it was a little misguided in the ad. People assumed it would be alright to take kids to due to it being about fairy tales.... However I noticed a lot of reviews made bad comments saying that isn't how the fairytales went, it was awful blah, blah, blah. If you EVER do your investigating you will realize that the original storys were just has horrific as how they were offered in the movie. Little red riding hood did get eaten, hanzel and gretle did get killed by the witch and all the other storys were like that. There is books where the storys doesn't go as plan. If you investigate you will realize the storys were changed later so they would not scare children. If people cannot accept this then they shouldn't worry about seeing the movie ever again.

Now back to the movie, yes it was graphic with the cat scene as well as afew others, I suggest this as a renter for those who really disagree with the whole concept of the dark side of the storys or those who agree with the negative comments. As for those who enjoy action, horror, dark movies, then by all means this is a buyer.

Video wise I give this movie one thumb up and I'll explain why. Graphically it was pretty good and and the effects or lack there of was alright but could have found better ways to do some scenes. Audio was average but I think that was because the theater speakers sucked. Acting was average.
