Goon (2012)

GoonI am a semi-recent hockey fan, female, from California, and also a big movie fanatic in general, and I found this movie to be entertaining, funny, fun, not too gory or anything... The main character was consistently charming and endearing in a sincere way... The pace was good. As a "puckhead," I know what details are a lil bit exaggerated, but as a movie fanatic, the narrative was engaging, fast-paced, not too formulaic, adventurous, and simply sweet in all regards!!! I wish there were more movies like this out there! GO DOUGIE!!!!

This film one-ups the relentless verbal crudity, testosterone-fueled raunchiness, and bone-crunching violence of the legendary ice hockey movie "Slap Shot," combining it with the dry wit and doltish characters you may know from SCTV's "Great White North" sketches. Based on a memoir by hockey pro Doug Smith, it mixes in broad jokes about beer, women, Russians, and Québécois to make something quintessentially Canadian, yet it's also accessible to those of us who did not grow up with Molson running through our veins and visions of the Stanley Cup haunting our dreams.

"Goon" features an excellent cast of Canadians led by the winning Seann William Scott, perhaps best known for his role as Steve Stifler in the "American Pie" films. Scott plays bouncer Doug Glatt, a sweet-natured, dim-witted man-child who just happens to be very good at beating the crap out of people. After a fracas at a hockey game leads a local team to hire him, his thuggish efficiency on the ice gets him promoted to a minor-league club, the Halifax Highlanders. Coach Ronnie Hortense (Kim Coates) assigns him the task of protecting the team's high-scorer, Xavier Laflamme (Marc-Andre Grondin), a former prodigy now less interested in hockey than he is in cocaine and strippers.

Eugene Levy (also in "American Pie") is Doug's father, a doctor ashamed of his son's job as a hockey enforcer; Jay Baruchel (one of the screenwriters) is Doug's friend Pat, a rabid fan who hosts an amateurish cable program devoted to the sport; Alison Pill (Baruchel's real-life fiancée) is Doug's crush Eva, a "puck bunny" with a thing for hockey players; and Liev Shreiber (the only major star in the film) is renowned enforcer Ross "The Boss" Rhea, who becomes Doug's nemesis in the arena.

Since it's a comedy, "Goon" gives us a happy-if-cockeyed ending in which Doug gets the girl and his underdog team wins redemption in the final showdown. But that's not really the point: this is an over-the-top love letter to the rough-and-tumble culture of hockey and of Canada itself, as well as an excuse for boys being boys, with all of the aggressive idiocy, drunken profanity, and bloody brutality that involves. Entertaining stuff. I recommend it.

Warning This film has very over the top dirty language. If that's not your thing don't post a review about this movie. On to the movie: I watched the movie with my wife who is not a huge sports fan at all. Neither does she like blood much. This movie had pretty much everything a man loves about a movie Action, Sports, Fights, Overcoming bull crap in your life. Then it throws in just enough of a romance to keep anyone else with a pulse interested in the rest of the movie. It's not too long, it's gets to the point and it pulls you in from the start if you're a hockey fan.

Just remember it's rated R.

Who doesn't love a good underdog story? Add in the fact that this is based on a REAL person (man i love that guy)... and especially when he's hot and he gets the girl in the end... and along the way he beats the holy crap out of everyone who deserves it... the fight scenes were AWESOME and the story was memorable...the characters are absolutely irresistable. It makes me want a hockey guy of my own. In the meantime I'm going to rent this again and watch it a couple more times! He was totally blessed by the fist of God. :-)

What is cool is this is based on a true story of a guy who used to box and who is now currently a police officer (seek out the documentary short about this guy). Also do not miss the end credits to see the real Doug fight it out!! :)

Had to watch this a 2nd time as I was laughing too hard and missed some of the jokes. Great movie! Can't remember the last time I wanted to see a movie twice but will buy for sure when it is released on Blu Ray (mabye latter this year?)

A Bag of Hammers (2011)

A Bag of HammersI love this quirky, smart, dramatic, touching indie film. The acting is superb by actors Jake Sandvig, Jason Ritter, and Rebecca Hall. It has a bit of everything you could want in a film, I just wish it was in theaters for a longer period of time :)

This movie was a complete surprise. I found it randomly on a streaming site that starts with "N."

This is a story about two slackers/small time criminals who find themselves caring for a 12 year-old boy. The story shifts from comedy to fatherhood, and how families form as needed. There is still a lot of humor in the story, until it reaches a certain point where it's breaking your heart.

The film pays off. Highly recommended.

So many films today want to portray young men, and fathers in particular as losers trying to escape parenting. This is a story about people who fight for it.

A Bag of Hammers starring Jason Ritter and Jake Sandvig is one of those movies that starts off as a comedy and then halfway through, shifts to a serious, thoughtful film. A Bag of Hammers is the story of two slackers who suddenly become a father figure to a seriously neglected boy named Kelsey. Rebeca Hall and Amanda Seyfried also star. I really loved this movie, I felt like the ending was so moving and you could really feel the love for this troubled boy. I highly recommend it, enjoy!

Billy Madison (1995)

Billy MadisonI've read every review of this movie quite thoroughly and I've noticed a common thread in each and every "bad" review given. All of Billy Madison's detractors say that the movie is stupid and childish. I suggest that these people stick to their "The English Patient", and leave this wonderful film alone. The movie's 'stupidity' as critics call it, is actually the essence of it's true genius. Billy Madison is ridiculous, illogical, and downright bizarre, but it is these elements that make this movie the most entertaining film I have ever seen. Sure, there are great, epic, emotional dramas that have the power to move you to tears, and these are exceptional films. Films can also be fun however, and Billy Madison is the most fun you will ever have from simply watching a movie. Doesn't this also make a film great? Why do critics always dismiss films such as these as "immature"? Billy Madison won't make you cry, but Gone With the Wind sure isn't gonna make you laugh either. Both emotions are important, and a film that makes you laugh uncontrollably (which I guarantee this film will) is just as effective as one that makes you weep, or feel warm and fuzzy inside. As far as Sandler's acting chops are concerned, he certainly wouldn't be considered a 'thespian', but his natural appeal is so exceptionally strong that it can carry a movie he is just that likeable. The man speaks pure gibberish and I laugh my fool head off, this is a talent that no other actor can match. I don't recommend that you see Billy Madison, I insist that you buy it, right now, from Amazon.com. The American Film Institute declared Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" as the greatest film of all time? Just one question: where is the imaginary penguin, Mr. Welles? Where is the imaginary penguin? Peace, I'm outta here!

This is still my favorite of all of Adam Sandler's filmefforts. WHY, you ask? Because of it's LACK of a script. This moviedoesn't even try to create substance, character or plot! All it is, is Adam Sandler acting so lovably loopy that you can't help but crack a smile or let out a large guffaw. Sandler's other films (that I DIDN'T like) like "The Waterboy" and "Big Daddy" tried to be sort of serious in some parts and tried to be witty when in fact it wasn't.

"Billy Madison" is all about STUPIDITY. Heck, it's about a 28 year old guy going through grade school! Whatta ya expect, ya know! There are classically hysterical moments:

"O'Doyle rules! " "Shampoo is better! I help clean the hair! Conditioner is better! I make the hair silky and smooth! Oh, really fool! Really! . . .Stop looking at me swan." "No, I will not make out with you! "

And of course, who could forget Steve Buscemi putting on lipstick? Or the late great Chris Farley making out with a penguin. Or those stupid graduation parties! It's so stupid but sooooo funny for some reason. Watch this comedy today. END

This movie is like -soo riotously funny. No bearing on relity, but you'll laugh your splitting sides off! See Adam Sandler before he became so well known. His comic genius was already showing big time. As an heir with whacky friends, he has to repeat all grades of school in just a few weeks to convince his dad that he's worthy of his inheritance. And he has a riotous good time in the process. He meets a teacher, Veronica Vaughan, played by Bridgette Wilson. This is her only lead role I know of -she's such an underrated actress who should have gone big places. See this underrated gem of a comedy!

Is there a point to this story? No. Do you care? No. This is, in my humble opinion, Adam Sandler's best movie.

Adam(Billy Madison) plays a drunk, lazy, party going imbecile. His father is the proud owner of a big hotel chain. Billy wants nothing more than to take over this chain of hotels from his father. In order to do so he must graduate grades 1-12 in two weeks. He falls for his third grade teacher Veronica Vaughn. He actually has one of his third grade classmates call up his teacher to see if she likes anyone. That in itself is funny as I'm sure all of us guys and gals have had one of our friends call up someone we had a crush on to see if they liked us when we were younger. Billy, however is 28 years old.

Anyway, Billy Madison isn't for everybody. If you want a rich plot or great acting this is definitely not for you. This movie is for any Adam Sandler fan. It's that stupid, stupid humor that can make anyone crack a smile. If you want a movie to make you laugh see Billy Madison.

Billy Madison is the most hilariously inane character that Adam Sandler has portrayed, and while I don't consider this one of Sandler's best movies, it is easily one of his funniest. A lot of the comedy seems to have come directly from the set of Saturday Night Live; it was funny there, and it is funny here. Even a few SNL buddies, namely Norm MacDonald and the late Chris Farley, turn up to revel in the infectiously entertaining silliness. Sandler plays Billy Madison (of course), the son of a filthy rich hotel magnate. He spends all of his time lazing around the pool, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, and pawing over nudie mags; his only hobby seems to be lighting bags of poo on fire on the front porch of people he doesn't particularly like. Even after his infantile behavior at a big business meeting, he is shocked to hear his father say he is giving the company to a particularly annoying executive rather than turning it over to him. He swears he will do anything, even go back to school and actually earn the diploma his father bought for him, to make his father change his mind. Monday morning finds him camped out in a first grade classroom, where he actually fits in pretty well. Every two weeks, he is tested and bumped up another grade. Billy really enjoys his time in third grade because he makes some good friends among the children and laps the elixir of knowledge from the fountain of the gorgeous Veronica Vaughn (Bridgette Wilson). As time goes by, Eric starts sweating and sets Billy up for a fall. Only the disciplinarian love of Veronica and the support of his new childhood friends can pick Billy up and get him back in the game.

I think Sandler is a comic genius, and few comedians could make such a silly, silly movie a real success. I mean, Billy does things like chase imaginary giant penguins around the house; that kind of thing just doesn't fly with any other actors. I should point out that there is actually a strong human element to this story as it progresses, though. Once all the alcohol is out of his bloodstream, Billy is a nice, good-hearted fellow, and the reliving of his old school days makes a profound impact on his character. I'm still not exactly sure what Veronica sees in him, but true success pretty much requires a good-looking woman to be there to kiss you at the end. Perhaps I should just say a final word to the parents of teenaged boys: while this movie does provide a strategy guaranteed to make any young man study his heart out, it is probably not something you will want to sanction in your own family life.

When in Rome (2010)

When in RomeI love the people who trash romantic comedies that deliver exactly what you expect a romantic comedy to deliver. "When in Rome" is nothing more and nothing less than a cookie cutter chick flick about romance, finding love, a happy ending, with some jokes thrown in to make you laugh. I enjoyed the movie and for the fee of renting it on demand, felt it was well worth the 91 minutes of run time, not including previews of course. Please people, who doesn't think that Kristen Bell is cute and even my girlfriend perks up a little when Josh Duhamel comes on screen.

Kristen Bell plays a working woman who finds her job much more rewarding than any relationship she can find. It doesn't mean she isn't sad nothing has worked out with the men in her life. It just means that she can feel rewarded standing on her own two feet. Hello, am I connecting with the female population yet? She is a lead curator at the Guggenheim museum and just when she concedes to living a life of solitaire, her sister decides to get married and things go a little haywire. So off to Rome she flies for a weekend of family hell.

While in the romantic city she picks a few coins out of a fountain and unknowingly captures the hearts of some lucky dudes who had previously dropped them in the mysterious fountain. While the magic is working its way towards insanity she meets Josh Duhamel who happens to actually like her. The two of them make a great pair. As corny as the scene is with breaking the vase and short circuiting the electricity, it actually made me laugh. Without giving too much away, the commercials do that all too well already, I will say that several scenes had me laughing pretty loud at times. It really was a funny movie, even if it was a little trite and predictable.

In my book Dax Shepard was absolutely hilarious with his washboard stomach. He spent most of the movie with his shirt off as he looked at himself almost as much as he sat admiring Kristen Bell. How this guy is not cast in more movies is beyond me, but we can continue to enjoy his work next season in Parenthood.

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie. If you go in expecting a nice romantic comedy with several funny scenes you will leave happy. It isn't anything ground breaking and there is no thought involved. It is simply 91 minutes of mindless entertainment where everything works out in the end. What more can you ask from a movie of this nature. In my book it delivered, so have a few laughs and move on to the next one. Hollywood has been making these since the moving picture was invented, and it will continue as long as people buy the tickets to see them. I for one think it was adequately worth the price.

So, I realize that I am writing this right when it shows up in theaters, but I decided to go ahead and rate the movie based on the actual movie (not the DVD), because alot of times I will go on here to see what other people are saying about the movie, before I go see it. So, I decided to do that for this movie. :)

Overall, I enjoyed When in Rome. It's a great chick-flick.

When in Rome tells the story of Beth (Kristen Bell) who, while visiting Rome for her younger sister's wedding, realizes that she may never actually settle down because no man has ever ranked above her job. So, in a drunken craze, she visits the Fountain of Love and removes several coins from the fountain's water. This brings five guys (Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Danny Devito, and most importantly Josh Duhamel) into her life...all of whom have fallen madly in love with her. She has to figure out a way to break this spell, while also trying to figure out whether or not some of those feelings may be for real.

As I said, overall it was an enjoyable movie. It is one of those movies that you have to accept that it's not supposed to happen in real life. I mean, it's all about magic and falling in love with the right people. It does have funny enough parts to keep a guy entertained, but it is definitely a chick flick that I recommend. It made me want to visit Italy and find this so-called Fountain of Love. :)

Leads Kristen Bell & Josh Duhamel have fantastic chemistry in this very light romantic comedy; however, the supporting cast is even more impressive: Anjelica Huston, Danny DeVito, Don Johnson, Peggy Lipton, Dax Shephard, as well as the duo from Napoleon Dynamite Jon Heder & Efren Ramirez (Vote Pedro!). Here's the plot: Beth (Kristen Bell) puts her career at the Guggenheim first since her love life has continually left her burned. Things begin to change when she meets the best man, Nick (Duhamel) at her sister's wedding in Rome. Unknowingly, by taking 5 coins from the Fountain of Love during a drunken romp, she causes 5 men to fall madly in love with her. All 5 follow her back to America and stalk her...until she is able to return the coins to them to break the spell. Although she loves Nick, she discovers that his love might have been caused by one of the coins; should she return the coin to him or live without fear that he will leave her? The plot is very predictable, so not a lot of surprises, but the comedy from her suitors as they attempt to impress her provides most of the hijinks here. Heder as an amateur Criss Angel magician is definitely the funniest of the bunch.

Overall, the film is enjoyable even if predictable; a little uneven, it goes from insightful comedy & drama into downright stupidity all in the same scene. In the hands of a more experienced director, this one really could have been much better and with the talented cast, it's a real crime that the opportunity for perfection was missed. I would recommend this movie mainly to the teen/early 20's group who seems to have really enjoyed it the most.

SPECS:

91 minutes * Video: Widescreen 1080p, 2:35:1, Enhanced for 16x9 TVs. Audio: Dolby TrueHD (48kh2/24-bit) & 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound (Bluray); English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound & Spanish & French Dolby Digital 2.0 (DVD). Languages: English, Spanish, and French. Subtitles: Spanish & French.

I actually enjoyed the extras almost as much (if not more) than the movie.

DVD Bonus Features:

-Kerplunk! Bloopers from Rome (3 minutes): You really get a sense that the cast worked well together and was having fun during the entire shoot in this medley of expected flubs from the making of this film.

-Deleted Scenes (7 minutes on Blu-ray): Usually I feel the deleted scenes were correctly removed from a film; however, in this case, there are some that would have added some extra humor, including a very funny bit with Dax Shepard in front of an Abercrombie & Fitch store.

-Music Videos: "Starstrukk" by 3OH3! with Katy Perry RT and "Stupid Love Letter" by Friday Night Boys RT.

Additional Extras on Bluray:

-Alternate Opening & Ending (7 minutes) (these were wisely not used!)

-Crazy Casanovas: Mischief From The Set (12 minutes): We meet our hilarious cast and crew that brought this film to life

-Extended Scenes (3 minutes): Pain with the Suitors. Deleted sequence showing the final exhibit at the Guggenheim with the suitors providing a few funny moments, some which would have been great in the finished film (especially an electric chair sequence with Jon Heder).

-Additional Deleted Scenes (7 minutes of deleted scenes total on the Blu-ray): The deleted scenes on the Blu-ray are Getting Married, Playing Cat & Mouse (cute Danny DeVito bit), Setting the Record Straight, Throwing Out The Mummy, It's The Naked Lady, The Saddest Thing, Look Both Ways, Suitors Make A Scene.

Sneak Previews: Alice in Wonderland, ESPN World Cup 2010, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Lost: The Complete Sixth And Final Season, and On Blu-Ray Disc

There is some adult humor and some mild (I mean mild!) sexual situations that would make this film not a great fit for the wee ones. Other than the paintings, there is no nudity in this film.

I'm going to quit watching romantic comedies for a while; they have been totally abused and over done; this movie is no exception. Cute and good looking people are not necessarily funny, and getting some famous stars to act in a stupid plot doesn't make it a good plot as you can see in this movie. A cute girl takes coins out of the love fountain in Rome, while attending her sister's wedding and suddenly many men start falling for her (I still can't figure why her sister looks like she's 12. Is that even legal?) . Anyway, she believes that all of the guys are falling for her because of the coins she picked up, including a guy that she really likes. The moral of the story is that the girl doesn't want to have some body's love against their will, I think she needs to figure out that this is what alcohol is for, but she reaches a different conclusion! You might want to see for yourself, if you have an hour or so to kill!

The Prince & Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon (2008)

The Prince & Me 3: A Royal HoneymoonI purchased this item for a friend who was a massive fan of the first 2 DVDs in this series. Unfortunately, neither of us liked the third installment. I really hope they don't make anymore because it seems they got worse as they went along. The first movie was fantastic and the second was a 'typical sequel' which didn't quite live up to the first's reputation but was still enjoyable. Now, the third movie is almost a complete flop. The scenery is great, so that's one good thing. The acting is believable so that's good too. But the switch in actors throughout the movies brings a noticable change in acting styles. I guess the biggest problem is that I'm comparing this to the first one with Julia Stiles which I really enjoyed. Maybe this movie would appeal to some as a 'stand alone' movie without being compared to the previous ones? If you erase the movie's history, you may well find this a delightful movie!

i enjoyed prince and me 3 but was expecting the same actor to play the prince. he does look like the same one but the action was not quite the same. the story line was workable.

This third installment of 'The Prince and Me" trilogy is truly mind-numbing. The first was corny and improbable but had a certain escapist charm owing to the lead actors, Julia Stiles and Luke Mably. Number two was a hoot; so stupid it left one gasping for air. Number three has arrived and is giving its immediate predecessor a run for it's money. The main characters have now both been replaced, which is merciful for the reputations of the original cast members; the performances of the new 'royal couple' should give hope to amateur thespians everywhere but those two should seriously contemplate working at the local mall. Having said that though we bought it for a laugh and we aren't disappointed!

THIS IS NUMBER THREE IN THE SERIES AND EACH ONE IS WORSE THAN THE PREVIOUS.

Want The Prince & Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon (2008) Discount?

The Prince and Me 3 was actually somewhat better than the second one in the series. The major positive difference was that the actor playing the King appeared to actually want to be there. In The Prince and Me 2 it was fairly obvious that Luke Mably did NOT want to be in the film.

The major negative difference was the terrible, awful, worst I have ever seen actor they found to play the Scott character. I can't think of another actor (and here I use the word actor loosely) that came near the swfulness of this guy. Where did they find this guy? He had no sense of the flow of the movie. He most reminded me of someone whose idea of acting was to stand in front of a camera and say his lines.

Without the actor playing Scott this movie would have stood a chance. Not even close to the original Prince and Me with Julia Stiles but still much better than the second one. Kam Heskin was much better in this one and the director paid attention to details unlike number 2.

I still can't recommend it unless you are simply into the series. Fingers crossed and number 4 will be a bit better still.

Joe Somebody (2001)

Joe SomebodyJoe Somebody is a pretty good family movie. movie is about an average Joe played by Tim Allen who gets zero respect from his peers and work buddies. after 10 years with the same company, he wasn't given the promotion he wanted, and after getting beaten up and embarassed in front of his daughter and co-workers, he decides to take a stand, and get back what he lost in the parking lot.

i LOVE Belushi's character, Chuck Scarett. he's a former actor who had one good movie, and then his career tanked. he now teaches karate, and as he says, 90 percent of his business comes from people who got their butts kicked. i love the interaction between the Allen and Belushi character.

overall, solid and very enjoyable movie about your average Joe who wants to be somebody.

also includes some special features with a HILARIOUS deleted scene from Belushi's character.

good movie. good father's day present.

Tim Allen may not always pick the best films to star in (`Big Trouble', `Galaxy Quest', `Jungle 2 Jungle') but there is no denying that what he brings to the table helps bolster those films into a league they wouldn't inhabit on their own. In fact, typing the name of any Tim Allen film comes with a sharp mix of cringe and smile, since while none of his films are typically `good' films, they are all a lot of fun to watch. `Joe Somebody' is no exception. It is generic and predictable and sits nice and easy on the `family friendly' line, but it's respectably all of those things. It understands its audience and so it serves up what that audience requires, but it does so with the extra `something'; that something being Tim Allen. Allen plays the `everyman' with ease (a role he could take on in his sleep) and so he elevates the standard material by making it warm and inviting and `lived in'. Tim Allen may not be one of the best actors out there, but he's one of the most likable and so his participation in any film helps make it palatable. `Joe Somebody' will pull you and in and keep you engaged and will leave you with a smile.

The cast seems to be enjoying themselves and that carries over on to the viewer. I don't think Tim Allen has ever been more likable and the romantic chemistry between him and quirky cutie Julie Bowen is believable.

Jim Belushi is very amusing as a "has been" action hero star turned boozer Karate instructor, so the next time you wake up in one of those "I don't want to do anything moods" It might be time to watch "Joe Somebody" It just might have the inspirational fluff you need! lol! JOE SOMEBODY has a pretty clear message: being "somebody" is mainly being yourself, and star Tim Allen does a good job in bringing this message home. He plays Joe, a nice corporate visual aid consultant, who gets slapped around by a bully employee in front of his impressionistic daughter. He decides to take lessons from a has been karate movie star, and challenges the bully to a rematch. It's all cutesy stuff, but it benefits from Allen's on target performance and a nice supporting cast including Julie Bowen, Hayden Patteniere, Patrick Warburton and Jim Belushi as the karate instructor. It's ending is not predictable and that is refreshing in movies of this type. Fans of Allen will love it; you'll like it too.

Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)

Bachna Ae HaseenoRanbir Kapoor proves himself worthy of the Kapoor name in this charming film. Told as a series of three vignettes, Ranbir Kapoor's charactor (Raj) learns about life and grown-up relationships. The three actresses who play his girlfriends all do a fantastic job with Bipasha Basu as the real stand-out and the music is also top notch.

While "Bachna ae Haseeno" is by no means a deep meaningful film, it is a fun and well made one. I highly recommend it.

"Beware, O Beautiful Ones," the title tells us--beware, indeed, because Ranbir Kapoor is already scorching his way to the top in this, his second film, and setting hearts on fire along the way. Kapoor--the grandson of the granddaddy of Indian film, actor Raj Kapoor, and the cousin of actress Kareena Kapoor--has the talent to match his pedigree and it shows even in this predictable, albeit entertaining movie about a commitment-phobe who gets a comeuppance.

But the real star of the show is Bipasha Basu, in a role she was born to play--that of a driven superstar who might be hurt by heartache, but can't be stopped by anything. Although she doesn't share screen time with the other two female leads--Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba--they pale in comparison to her. She even comes close to overshadowing the very engaging Kapoor, with whom she's extremely mismatched--it stretches believability that a bombshell like her would even be interested in a boy-man like him, however adorable he might be, or that he'd do anything less than worship her. Instead, he dumps her. Right.

We meet Kapoor's character, Raj, as a teenager, when he breaks the heart of Mahi (Lamba), a sweet girl with whom he shares a kiss and promises of forever while vacationing in Switzerland. She catches him bragging to his friends--and thoroughly exaggerating--about their time alone together and he leaves her, crushed, at the airport. Six years later, he's a software developer in Mumbai living with his girlfriend Radhika (Basu), an aspiring model. Once again, Raj is cavalier about the relationship, and when his company wants to transfer him to Australia, he sees it as an easy way out of his domestic arrangement. But Radhika doesn't make it easy--she assumes they're going to get married and move there together. Instead of breaking up with her, he skips out on the wedding. Five years later, he's loving bachelorhood--and all the blonds--in Australia, until he meets Gayatri (Padukone), a knockout MBA student who works as a cab driver to pay the bills. Her hard-to-get act works, and he's smitten. But this time, it's his turn to get hurt. Wounded and wiser, he realizes how much pain he caused in the past and he sets out to find Mahi and Radhika and apologize to them. His guilt is worsened when he discovers what's become of them--Mahi is in a perfunctory marriage and Radhika is a cold and cruel world-famous model. Of course, neither is eager to give him the forgiveness he badly craves and he must work to earn it.

All in all, it's a cute story about an improbably lucky and likable rogue with a lot of growing up to do.

The cover picture put me off a little. Combined with the description it looked like a jerk with a superficial life. Now that may have ended up being so if this was Holywood but Indian movies have a way of going ddeper and looking at what people are learning about life and ethics.

So the plot ended up being very satisfying. He really gets a chance to learn about his effects on other and how they respond to his dumping them from their diffferent personalities and ways of coping.

While the way he does it is fantasy the effect is of someone really examining their responsibily and growing. Iliked the feel of that.

The location shots are really beautiful and the acting good.

I personally found the hero a bit bland and bewildered at times but he ends up being quite likeable.

The standout thing about this movie for me too is the music. There are quite a few catchy tunes that were with me well after. You rarely get so many on the one soundtrack that I ended up buying the soundtrack.

Well worth the journey particualarly if you like catchy modern Indian music.

... else heat from Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone would melt it because Minissha Lambda, Kunal Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor do nothing to cool it off.

While not every thing that happens in this film is a big surprise, the story is fresh and mostly unpredictable after an odd beginning. Your might avoid review spoilers because the story is fun to see unfold. Minissha is innocent and lovely, Bipasha is exotic and sexy and Deepika is sweet and beautiful.

Ranbir Kapoor is extremely versatile, hitting full stride in this film. Kunal Kapoor is featured more in Laaga Chanuri Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle two very good films that I think are underrated because people are thinking too much.

The dancing in BAH ranges from technically difficult and energetic (Punjab sequence with Kunal, Minissha and Ranbir) through hot and sexy (Bipasha, Lucky Boy) to scenic and flowing (Deepika and Ranbir) with some must see scenery and camera work. There is also, a cute street dance featuring Ranbir (Small Town Girl). Title song (Bachena Ae Haseeno) features all three women and Ranbir with as traveling "blue screen" surprise.

The icing on the cake is Shreya Goshal, one of the excellent background singers. Need I say more?

Sister Act: 20th Anniversary Edition - Two-Movie Collection (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (1992)

Sister Act: 20th Anniversary Edition - Two-Movie CollectionIt seems as though lately, nearly all movie studios are jumping onto a new trend in DVD releases double, triple, even quadruple features which consist of taking ever-so-slightly related catalogue DVD releases and packaging them together. These are executed in several ways, ranging from simply packaging existing DVDs together, in the case of Buena Vista Home Entertainment's releases, or putting existing DVDs onto flippers, in the case of some of Warner Bros.' releases. Some sets put all the DVDs into one case, while others use a box with slim DVD cases inside. No matter how they're executed, these sets can usually be found for fifteen dollars or less in stores such as Wal Mart.

On one hand, I kinda like this trend. It's a great value for your dollar, and who isn't looking for THAT these days? On the other hand, I feel like if they're going to do this, they could update some of these DVDs.

Take this Sister Act 2-Movie Collection DVD. I picked this up because I LOVE these movies. Love love love. And for less than fifteen dollars, it's a great value. However, I'd have liked to see Touchstone Home Entertainment make this set with new DVD editions.

Both DVDs feature non-anamorphic widescreen transfers likely taken from laserdisc masters. Both are fairly good and clean, but brand new anamorphic digital transfers would have been much better. Both DVDs feature a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround English track and a French language track and the film's original theatrical trailer. The first film's DVD also includes a making-of featurette and two music videos.

What Touchstone could have done was make a new 2-Disc set with new Special Edition DVDs of both films. They could have included new anamorphic digital transfers, new making-of featurettes for both films where cast and crew members could look back on the films and their success, new audio commentaries from cast and crew, music-only audio tracks, and other such bonus materials which would have made this an amazing set.

Despite these flaws, I can't really NOT recommend this DVD set to fans of the Sister Act films. If you only enjoy one or the other, you're better off getting the one film you enjoy on DVD by itself. However, if you're a fan of both films, like I am, this is the best value, and will save you some shelf space to boot.

I have no idea how long since I first watched this movie. Even though I generally lean towards drama and true crime rather than comedy, I fell in love with Sister Act and Whoopi Goldberg. Like her character, Deloris, I also enjoyed music from the 60s and enjoyed the opening act. When she was talked into hiding out at the convent, the action slowed down a little, though certain parts were funny, such as when she, and Sisters Mary Patrick and Mary Robert entered a bar. However, the action took off when she became head of the choir and introduced a bit of deep shoulder action to the nuns. Out of respect for those who still have not seen this movie, I won't say more about the contents. The DVD, which I bought in a set with the sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, it played beautifully with no pausing as sometimes happens. It was very easy to remove the disk from its holder and replace after viewing the disk. I enjoyed the brief look at how the movie was made in the special features, but unfortunately forget what it consisted of. I did feel it was worth watching before watching the movie. Whether you buy just Sister Act, or as a set with the sequel, it should tickle your funny bone.

These are great movies (I particularly like Sister Act 2 with Lauryn Hill) and I was thrilled to find they were released on DVD as a set!

For those not familiar with the movie, Whoopi plays Delores Van Cartier, a Las Vegas/Reno showgirl (can't remember which town) who witnesses a murder. The cop in charge of the investigation (Bill Nunn) puts her in protective custody (not sure of the term, sorry) at a convent. Delores's lifestyle clashes with the convent life, but she adapts somewhat, but she's a rebel against their strict rules. She is put in the choir, which is awful, and is elected the new choir director and the rest of part 1 revolves around that and her differences with the convent's reverend mother. Part 2, Whoopi is a Las Vegas headliner and is asked by the reverend mother to return, this time to St. Francis Academy in San Francisco as a music teacher. Lauryn Hill plays a conflicted student who wants to sing, but her mother really looks down on it and pulls her out of the choir. Part 2 is great for hearing Lauryn sing before she really hit it big a few years later with the Fugees.

I love the music in both of them, part 2 because of Lauryn Hill and Ron Johnson who worked a lot on the songs (he also played a student). I liked the music in part 1 where they took a lot of Motown classic and turned them into Christian songs, like "My Guy" to "My God".

Sister Act & Sister Act 2 make their impressive Blu Ray debut in this three disc set. The picture and audio quality on Sister Act is wonderful, boasting a very clean and detailed transfer and room filling sound. The picture quality does not disappoint, the ONLY thing I noticed was a bit of crushing in the scene after Whoopi witnesses the killing of her boyfriends limo driver and goes on the run being chased by her boyfriends right hand men. Some really nice extras are also included.

Sister Act 2 on the other hand boasts a good tranfer with equally good audio as it's predecessor, but the picture quality is not as good as Sister Act. Generally the picture is not as sharp and there is more crushing present than there is on the original film, but overall the quality is solidly GOOD. This is the best both films have ever looked, and in full 1080, probably the best they will ever look.

The only reason I gave this set 4 stars and not five is because the three discs consist of ONE Blu Ray with both films on it and TWO DVDs. I would have much preferred two Blu Rays and one double feature DVD. But all in all, if you are a fan of these films, an upgrade to Blu Ray (especially when you get both on Blu and on DVD) is a no-brainer!

My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

My Best Friend's WeddingAlternative Review Title: "It's a sculpture of the David"

At the time of its release, this was one of the freshest, funniest screwball comedies in a long time. Having watched it on video a few years later, I find it unfortunate that some of the luster has worn off. Perhaps seeing it in a theater with a good crowd was the difference; perhaps it's actually noticing how much larger the cellphones in 1997 were than the ones today. (And what about in five more years . . . ?)

This is not to say that it's not a good movie. It is, and the director and writer are to be commended for so many different, wonderful touches (the shadowed boat scene and smoking bellhop scene come to mind). Julia Roberts, beautiful and vibrant as always, shines as a New York food critic summoned on short notice by her best (male) friend, a former lover and possible soulmate (Dermot Mulrooney), to provide moral support at his wedding in Chicago. The plot revolves around Roberts' often backfiring efforts to break up the wedding and claim the groom for herself, usurping his rich, blonde, "perfect" fiancee Kimmie (Cameron Diaz), who may be more than she seems. Rupert Everett virtually steals the show as Roberts' gay friend George, who alternates between mildly assisting in the scheme and functioning as her counselor and conscience. A variety of characters, from the normal to the bizarre, round out the wedding party. (Note: the Amazon.com Essential Review is incorrect when it names Roberts' character as a Chicago food critic. It's clearly stated at one point that she's from NY, and she has to fly to the wedding. I mean, Chicago's big, but still . . .)

A solid 3-1/2 to 4 star effort. Recommended for fans of Roberts and those looking for a film that incorporates both comedy and romance without quite being a romantic comedy--in other words, an energetic, bittersweet blend with a beautiful anti-heroine whose actions and motivations provoke sympathy and concern in equal measure. With music, dancing, singing, a chase in a bread truck and an ice sculpture of Michelangelo's David, this one just about has it all. A trustworthy rental or bargain purchase.

I have always been a fan of Julia Roberts and the movies she stars in her smile is infectious, it lights up the screen. In 1997, she made a comeback with a starring role in the romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding. The film went on to become one of the most successful girly movies of the whole decade, and after watching it earlier tonight on TV, it's not hard to see why. It still holds up seven years later. The comedy is fresh, funky and slick. The plot is nothing original, but it holds up brilliantly because of the film's four main stars. You have Julia Roberts, of course, who is no doubt a future Hollywood legend. Then there's Cameron Diaz in one of her best film roles not quite topping her sexual cameo in The Mask three years earlier, but still bringing much humour to her role. Rupert Everett and Dermot Mulroney are the two main male actors and also do their roles justice.

Julia Roberts plays Julianne Potter, a fast-talking confident Chicago food critic who used to date Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney) in their college days. They since broke up after nine years and moved apart. They made a pact, however, that if by the age of 28 they both were not married, then they would marry each other. When Julianne receives a call from Michael three weeks before that pact deadline, she assumes he is ringing to get back with her. However, Michael is calling to introduce Julianne to his seemingly wonderful, irritatingly perfect fiancee Kimberly Wallace (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding which is taking place in just three days. That leaves Julianne three short days to break up the marriage and win back the man she has only just realised she loved all along. She will either win or lose that's the conclusion. Ronald Bass' perfectly-constructed screenplay keeps the viewer on the edge, forever guessing if she will win her battle. Julianne's gay friend George Downes (Rupert Everett) agrees to help her, but only to a certain extent, and he is a hilarious asset to the comedic intentions put forth by the writers of the film.

The film's plot seems at times far-fetched, and it is, but this is a light-hearted, romantic comedy with many clichés built in for good measure! The comedy is spot-on there aren't many laugh out loud moments, but more of a continual giggle-fest that will have you smiling for most of the film. Julia Roberts is a certain crowd-puller. People from all over the world will flock to see her movies, and this one was exception. Cameron Diaz was half the superstar in this film that she is today, and her glowing smile and charasmatic confidence shines through in her ditzy role. Rupert Everett reminds me of Hugh Grant in this film, which can be no bad thing!

The film has many memobrable scenes, including Kimberely's hilarious karoke nightclub performance of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself." The restaurant hilarity of the group's performance of Dianne Warwick's "I Say A Little Prayer" is also perfectly executed, with only professional directors pulling it off amateurs could have easily messed it up big time. The big city bread truck chase is hilarious, and the film has many touching moments. Julianne's constantly foiled attempts to sabotage the impending wedding are brilliant too: most notably the e-mail/falling off the chair scene. This film is pure comedic brilliance. It could have easily fallen flat on its face, but it didn't because of the right balance between fresh actors and excellent dialogue.

MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING is a fun romantic comedy that stars Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Evert and Dermot Mulroney. The story involves Juliette (Julia Roberts), a food critic who realizes she loves her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney). Juliette finds out that Michael is getting married and decides to go to stop the wedding from happening, and to try to win him back. From the get go, Juliette is scheming to put a wedge between Michael and his fiancé Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Her plans are often foiled and ultimately in the end, in a poignant moment, her friend George (Rupert Everett) asks her if she is chasing Michael and he is chasing Kimmy, who is chasing her? There are some real fun moments in the movie, like when Juliette pretends she is engaged to her gay friend in order to make Michael jealous. They end up singing "Say A Little Prayer" at breakfast. The movie is enriched by a great cast who have chemistry. Julia Roberts convincingly plays Juliette, who should be the enemy, but you end up rooting for her even through her hatched plans. Overall a fun romantic comedy fans of the genre should love.

I absolutely love this video. Not only does it offer Julia Roberts the opportunity to play the sort of off-the-wall romantic heroine she's best at (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride), it also provides us with perspective on two things: being careful what we ask for, and what constitutes real friendship. I contend that her real best friend all the way through this film is Everett. If you watch closely, every scene he's in with her contains the sort of sincere caring and genuine love we all wish we could have from friends...and lovers, for that matter. Not only does he steal every scene he's in with his great comic timing, he manages to imbue his character with great dimensionality and tenderness. Very appealing! I found myself wishing I had a friend like him: one who would say "There may not be marriage; there may not be sex; but, by God, there will be dancing!"

First off, this film should have just went ahead and been a full on, singing at the drop of a hat, high kicking musical. I mean, it wanted to be a musical, it kept hinting that it was going to turn into a musical. And it has a very, very, very 1950s charm to it from the references to Rock Hudson and Doris Day flicks to its funny, albiet a little sexist premise.

After multiple viewings of this film, I realize that I only watch it for two reasons, the songs and Rupert Evert, hence my longing for it to be a musical. I'm not a big Julia Roberts fan and the notion of her being a food critic is laughable ... she's borderline aneorexic.

I also couldn't figure out for the life of me why this guy both Julia and Cameron are fighting over in the movie is such a great catch. Once Julia shows up he treats Cameron like she's transparent. He expects his future wife to drop out of school and move miles and miles away for him, live a life of poverty and what he gives up in return is diddly squat. He never acknowledges the fact that an old flame/best friend that looks and acts like Julia Roberts may be difficult for Cameron to deal with but invites the woman to the wedding anyway. And Cameron plays the ultimate doormat. As soon as her fiance says boo, she's babbling and crying and doing anything to patch things up ... like give up her entire life. But she playing a naieve and 20-year-old. Her character will come to her senses when she divorces him two years later.

Needless to say, if we're just going on the sheer psychology of the thing, this marriage is doomed from jump. In the real world he'd end up cheating on her with Julia anyway and Cameron would grow to hate and loathe her husband because she gave up so much to get so little in return.

Perhaps I've watched this movie one too many times, but it's notion that women should just give up everything, and I mean everything, in the name of love while a man just gives up having sex with other women is rather dated. Everyone just keeps trying to pass it off that loverboy is just old fashioned but he's really just a huge prick. Personally, I think I would have enjoyed this farce more if they'd made him less a schmuck, her less a doormat and make Julia actually have to think of something more devious that phoney emails to break up an engagement. She didn't have to do much to make them fight after all, which they would do rather quickly with little provocation.

But I know that from my review you're wondering why I gave it four stars and once again, the music and Rupert Evert. If there had been more music or more Rupert I wouldn't have noticed the sexism until the 100th viewing, rather than the second. I was sad everytime the songs or Rupert had to go away and I was just left with the aneorexic and the Neadertal.

Parenthood (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (1989)

ParenthoodSteve Martin is top billed in this film and he is excellent but the rest of the cast is just as good. This movie is actually divided into four separate parts-four different branch off's of the same family (the father, his kids and their families)-that allows this fine ensemble to portray all the ups and downs of family life. It is a film that teaches without preaching and it's lesson is clearly understood: in life, you can't have the peaks without the valleys. And because of it every character comes to stark realizations about themselves and their relationships with other people. All the characters, that is, except the one played by Tom Hulce. But even that character is correctly written; it just simply isn't the right time for him to realize. The interactions between the father (Jason Robards) and his two sons (Hulce and Martin) tell us much about all three characters' past, present and future. Unfortunately there isn't any interaction between the father and the two daughters, played by Martha Plimpton and Dianne Wiest, but with so many characters to deal with and so many ties to bind, there simply wasn't time. But the time the writers have is well spent indeed. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel have taken a very basic idea and expanded on it in a realistic and original way. It's no wonder that all the characters are tied together so perfectly in the end.Ron Howard has taken that script and directed these tremendous performers to superlative work. Very seldom have any of them been better. Martin shines in an everyman IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE portrayal of the father of three and the second oldest child of the four earlier mentioned. Not since ROXANNE had he given a performance of such range and depth. Dianne Wiest as his older sister won another Oscar nomination and is just as good as she was in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS. Martha Plimpton as the next oldest child is fine as a mother torn between her high-tech-education-supporter-husband (Moranis, his best work since LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) and her young childhood deprived daughter. Tom Hulce is the youngest of Jason Robards' four kids and has the toughest role to play. He wasn't given the one-liners the others have. His character isn't likeable. His father obviously favors him at first, which is hard for the rest of the family as well as the audience to understand. But he portrays the character as it should be played-a wanderer with unstoppable dreams who is also to be pitied. Robards' portrayal of the father is one of his best and should have garnered him another Oscar nomination. Through Robards' father character we see how his kids turned out the way they did. And we see him growing and learning as he finds you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Joaquin Phoenix, here billed as Leaf (River's kid brother as Wiest's youngest) and Helen Shaw as Grandma, the matriarch of the family are also excellent. Keanu Reeves (Wiest's son-in-law) and Mary Steenburgen (Martin's wife) round out the cast beautifully. Randy Newman's score is perfect and the song "I Love to See You Smile" is very infectious.Pulling everything together for a production is not an easy thing. When you couple that with the fact that in this movie, comedy and drama are blended together seemlessly, Howard and his cast and crew have created a true treasure. Being a perfect parent is not easy. Being a perfect person is impossible. If you are anything less, see this movie.

"Parenthood" boasts of one of the best casts ever assembled. The writing is sharp and witty, the editing perfect, and the acting superb. My favorites are the always amazing Dianne Wiest, who's comedic timing is flawless, a young and lovable Keanu Reeves, and Helen Shaw, who plays "Grandma". This is a comedy that endures because it has a great big heart.

Personal experience with the changes that children brought to their lives inspired director Ron Howard and writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Madel to write this comic take on the challenges of family. Steve Martin plays Gil Buckman, a good-humored husband and father whose dissatisfaction with his own childhood makes him try all the harder to ensure the happiness and success of his own children, as his extended family struggles with their own offspring. Gil, his sisters' families and the elder Buckman's, his parents, try to find the "right" thing to do for their children while dealing with the demands of spouses, life's ill-timed inconveniences, their own aspirations, and each other.

"Parenthood" is a laugh-out-loud look at the perils and rewards of family. Everyone will recognize someone they know in the imperfect children, crazy relatives, and inevitable dysfunctional family member. The film's charm is its familiarity. And it's nice to see characters that don't react to every disappointment by trying to control everyone involved. The cast is wonderful. Gil, the earnest, lovable, and slightly neurotic father, is the perfect role for Steve Martin. In notable supporting roles, Jason Robards is suitably cantankerous as the family patriarch, and Keanu Reeves is affable as a flakey boyfriend. "Parenthood" is funny, realistic, and a great stress-reliever for anyone who has had it up to the gills with family.

The DVD: Bonus features include "Production Notes", which is an essay about the inspiration and creation of the film, and "Cast and Filmmakers", which provides written bios of the director and principal cast. Subtitles are available in Spanish, captioning in English. And dubbing is available in French.

I just watched "Parenthood" again for the umpteenth time, and it still carries an emotional wallop.

The film revolves around several generations of the Buchman family, and though they might, in some other films be considered 'dysfunctional,' in this movie their pitfalls are simply offered as a slice of real life.

The family patriarch is Frank Buchman (Jason Robards). Among his four children are Gil (Steve Martin), a modestly-successful though rather tightly-wound businessman with three children of his own... one of whom is a fragile eight-year-old boy who frequently breaks into hysterics --whether because he dropped a fly-ball and lost a baseball game for the team, or was simply terrified when the house blew a fuse.

Buchman's other son is a complete loser and manipulator named Larry (Tom Hulce), who shows up for a family dinner after (we learn) an absence of some three-plus years. Larry carries some serious baggage, including, but not limited to a gang of mobsters who are quite interested in being paid back for a rather substantial gambling debt.

Buchman's two daughters include Helen (Diane Wiest), whose own daughter played by Martha Plimpton is a high-school girl dating a house painter-cum-drag racer (Keanu Reeves), and whose 12-year-old son Gary (Leaf -now, JoaquinPhoenix) has withdrawn into himself and his padlocked room. Buchman's other daughter Susan is married to Nathan (Rick Moranis), a PhD of some sort who turns every waking moment and event into an educational opportunity for their four-year-old daughter --a girl who consequently has no capacity to relate to other four-year-olds, but who evidently has memorized the periodic table of elements, and understands words like "pragmatic."

One of the most priceless characters is "Grandma" (apparently, though never actually stated to be Jason Robards' mother). A sweet, and perceptive woman, nothing fazes her... including a scene where a hidden cache of porno flics is discovered. As she's led out of the room by her daughter, we hear her comment: "One of those young men reminded me of your grandfather!"

Grandma's monologue on rollercoasters and merry-go-rounds (and how they are an analogue for life), is one of the best moments in film... not just in THIS film, but one of the best moments in film, period. I have seen the movie easily over a dozen times, and it still slays me every time she starts to speak.

Parenthood is not to be missed.

How good is the Movie? I liked it so much I bought the DVD. The characters and situations are realistic and you can really empathize with their shortcomings and problems. You'll fall over laughing at the "Electric Ear Cleaner" scene...

Unfortunately Universal managed to ruin the DVD release of the movie. I've gotten so used to DVDs being letterboxed that I didn't even check only to find that the DVD has ONLY the pan and scan version. Any release of a movie that starts off by throwing away a third of the image is doomed in my opinion. So now I'm stuck with a great movie ruined by some thoughtless movie executive.

If they ever bother to release a widescreen version I'd sell this defective pan and scan piece of trash and buy the GOOD version. If you like the pan and scan format then you can ignore me and enjoy the movie :)
