Letters to Juliet (2010)

Letters to JulietI took a dear elder aged friend to this movie on a bad day in his life, hoping to distract him momentarily from events he couldn't do anything about. Instead, the movie re-invigorated both of us, and brought us repeatedly to tears. Say what you want about "feel good" movies, there are times when they are just what the doctor ordered!

Vanessa Redgrave is the heart of this film. The delicately fearless way she sets out to find her young lover, the grace with which she moves through the ups and downs of a process that could end in heartbreak, the care with which she brushes the young Sophie's hair...she is simply and purely lovely. Women d'un certain age should enjoy the possibilities she presents for aging beautifully.

I also suspect this movie was made after the death of Redgrave's daughter, Natasha Richardson, and so the scenes in which she calls Sophie "my darling" and loves her so freely are especially moving. Hollywood, listen up! Cast more Vanessa Redgraves, Judy Denschs and Helen Mirrens as stars in movies about life after 60, and you'll fill the theaters.

I went to this picture with my mom because I enjoy romantic films and adore Italian landscape. I was pleasantly surprised. The cast was absolutely charming, and I didn't come away with that "why did they have to put that in there" feeling. A true "feel good" movie. So many films go along nicely then suddenly BAM! an unexpected horribly sad plot twist. This gets worse than old at times. I'm a big Austen fan, and although she wrote with unexpected plot twists she always ends with a happy, if predictable, ending. And how do "her" film adaptations do?! Awesome! Let's hope hollywood learns something here. I hated to see the film end, and could have turned right around and watched it again. Way to Go! Some great young stars shine in this film. Hope to see them around again.

This is the true story: In 19th century, people of Verona indicated a house as the residence of Juliet from William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Later, in 1937, it became a tradition to go to Juliet's grave in Verona and leave Juliet a letter about one's love problems. In 1990s the amount of letters reached astronomical proportions and a group of volunteers, who call themselves "Club di Giulietta," took it upon themselves to answer each and every letter that's left for Juliet.

Enter Hollywood: A young woman named Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) on her pre-Honeymoon discovers a letter left unanswered since 1957 and decides to answer it. This sets in motion the entire movie and, lo and behold, the audience is following the film's characters through Italy's countryside in the search for one true love.

"Letters to Juliet" is a cute romantic comedy that has some pretty scenery and captures of Verona, Italy. The movie is rather unrealistic but in a nice, harmless way that makes the most critical of us smile. Although the film never transcends beyond the fairy-tale, it's a sugar-sweet movie that leaves a pleasant feeling.

Amanda Seyfried struggles with the responsibility of carrying on a film as a leading lady and Gael García Bernal is miscast as the fiance that never has time for Sophie. It's up to the film's elders to make the story compelling and Vanessa Redgrave shines as the woman who wrote Juliet a letter and is moved to search for her long-lost true love after fifty years.

I went to watch this film last night, mainly to see Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero acting together again, having seen them in Camelot a long while ago.

I am an old romantic, hence Camelot being my favourite film of all time, but I have to say Letters to Juliet will now come a close second.

It was a pleasure to watch, The story line was a bit cute, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I found some of the scenes quite moving. I know wether I am enjoying a film as I smile all the time and thats exactly what I did.

The scenery was wonderfull, and will encourage many visitors to beautifull Verona and the wonderfull Italy.

Pleasant, romantic, sceneic, funny, what more could you ask for. Curl up with a box of chocolates.

I do not cry very often in movies, But in this one, OMG! I've almost drowned in my own tears...

Predictible? Entirely. Cliches? Another big YES!But the movie is never cheesy or corky and that's the reason it conquered me completly.

The film is simply beautiful( Franco and Redgrave meeting, the wedding cerimony and Vanessa reading Amanda's letter to her during the wedding reception soaked my kleenex). Vanessa and Nero are a very sincere tribute to true love and her performance is delicate and sensitive.

The two young guys are less charming but Amanda is adorable and sweet.

I highly recommend. What a beautiful love story! There's not such like this sort nowadays..

Make The Yuletide Gay Blu-ray (2009)

Make The Yuletide Gay Blu-rayThis is is not a review of the movie but of the Blu Ray disc.

I own over 200 Blu Ray discs and this is the single worst I have ever seen. The DVD is better image quality than this disc. I didn't know it was possible to take such a high quality format to such a low performance level.

The movie has been grotesquely over corrected with noise reduction and edge enhancements. Portions of it look almost like a comic book due to lack of detail in darker areas. Didn't anybody actually watch this before approving its release? I would return it except that it is not the sellers fault that the studio released such poor quality.

The sound quality is excellent.

I really like this movie; I think it is one of Mr. Williams best. I was really looking forward to the Blu Ray but will now stick to the DVD for any future viewings.

We watch this every Christmas and love it each time. Great fun story. Mom and Dad are hysterical! Check it out.

Pirate Radio (2009)

Pirate RadioI am heartbroken! When I originally watched Pirate Radio I didn't realize it was the UK version. It was fantastic, the story, the music everything I couldn't wait till it came out on dvd. Then when it finally came out I couldn't find it anywhere to buy it. Not even Walmart was carrying it in their stores which I thought was strange. Finally I came to Amazon and bought mine. Wow what a butchered piece of crap. I don't know why the 2 dvd's are so different. Yeah the dvd's do contain the deleted scenes, most of which were included in the UK version but it's not the same. If you are going to buy Pirate Radio do yourself a huge favor and find a way to get the UK version. Watch out for the coding for your dvd player as UK dvd's don't play in USA dvd players, but from what I understand you can get the blue ray and get the UK version that way.

What a way to butcher a movie that was so great!!!! Someone seriously needs smacked for this one!

This film has just come out in the UK. For once, we (in the UK) got this film released here first. Its usually the other way round! Absolutely loved this film from beginning to end. It captures the essence of that era perfectly, and it is a film I could watch again and again. The whole cast's acting was superb throughout. My biggest surprise came from Rhys Ifans who portrayed the sex god DJ Gavin fantastically. What a sexy voice for the radio shame I can't mention one DJ on air at the moment who sounds the same...!

Unfortunately, I myself, was born in 1979, so wasn't around in that decade. However I took my mum to see this film as she was 21yrs old in 1966. She remembers listening to the pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, and remembers all the political controversy surrounding it. She thought it was a great film too.

If you appreciate the best music of all time, proper rock n roll from the 60's/70's, then you will love this film. It's a real feel good movie that you will appreciate if you ever wished you had lived through that era, or you were lucky enough to experience it first hand.

Pirate Radio sports a stellar cast including

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Tom Sturridge, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Emma Thompson (all too brief appearance)and Kenneth Branagh. When rock and roll exploded in the UK, the government and radio stations banned play over the airways. Rogue radio stations broadcast from ships offshore. Pirate Radio captures the exuberance and the bigger than life radio personalities that emerged with the new culture. Rated R for profanity and sexual situations, this film is full of laughs and any weaknesses are compensated for with an awesome soundtrack. Great way to spend an evening.

IF you want to know what it was like to listen to your radio in the mid 60's in Europe, buy this movie!

My family moved to Brussels in early 1964 when I was a teen. At that time, in early 1964 all I had to listen to was Radio Luxemburg. That station only played the first minute of any rock song, I have no idea why. In the summer of 1964 Radio Caroline started up, a pirate radio station. There were two of them, one in the North Sea and one south of England. I listened to radio caroline south all the time. They not only played a whole song, they actually played songs from everywhere, the west to east coast of America and British songs. This movie portrays the station as kinda crude in their language. Truthfully....YES! I will never forget New Year's Eve 1964 at 11pm, lying in my bed listening to them and hearing things I NEVER heard on American radio. I was lying there in pain trying not to laugh too loud for my parents to hear me as I heard their jokes. There were two DJ's on that night until midnight, both drunk!

The person who started Radio Caroline was an American and he named them for Caroline Kennedy. The radio control room you see in the movie is an exact replica of the control room on Radio Caroline.

Though this movie is fiction, the truth is that there was a wedding performed on Radio Caroline North and Radio Caroline South did sink in a force 10 gale, much to the glee of the British government.

This movie shows the audience exactly what it was like in Europe in the mid 60's with the freedom of pirate radios, like nothing America ever had, or the world will ever have again!

Want Pirate Radio (2009) Discount?

I saw the movie before they cut so many scenes out and after and I have to say it was a better movie before they deleted so many scenes. The bachelor party...the banter when the DJ's were climbing...so many deleted scenes! I think so many people feel the movie was disjointed because it was ruined after it was changed so much. A shame I think.

Criterion has done it again...I want to personally thank Criterion for taking the time and effort to remastering and releasing the films of Pierre Etaix to the public. Like his mentor Jacques Tati, Etaix is a comic genius whose humor is rooted in the classic comedians of the silent era (Buster Keaton, Chaplin, Harold Lloyd). Also like these comedians, Etaix uses humor to comment upon modern society (or what was considered modern at the time he was working). My personal favorite film out of this collection is Le Grand Amour, which takes the cinema trope of the troubled marriage, and brings it to a brilliantly surreal level. This is, without a doubt, the blu-ray release of the year!

A previous reviewer heaped praise on Criterion for "remastering and releasing" Etaix's films to the public. I don't disagree with that sentiment, though it should be limited to releasing the films to the US public. Criterion isn't in the job of remastering, and this was done for the Etaix films by Etaix himself in 2010, with financial support from the Groupama Gan Foundation, and Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage. We have these versions here, with new subtitles and various features.

Again, this isn't to slight Criterion. If it wasn't for them, it's difficult to think of another publisher that would purchase the US rights to these films. Praise all around, then.

I saw The Suitor 50 years ago, and was delighted with the beauty of the film, a series of carefully crafted images that told a simple story with a quiet surface but great underlying emotion. Etaix managed an uneasy balancing act of telling a comedic story without making his protagonist a clown.

Now, with the re-release of all his films, I find that Etaix was literally a clown at one time, and brought that background to film. So far, I've watched The Suitor, Yoyo (in which Etaix' background is a major aspect of the plot a rich kid who runs off to join the circus) and two highly inventive short films. All are beautifully filmed on low budgets, but the Blu-Ray restoration helps show the highly polished works that they are.

I would recommend these films to anyone who enjoys Jacques Tati (Etaix's mentor) or Bill Forsyth movies. They are in that quiet spirit, but evoke hearty laughter.

Scary Movie 5 (Unrated) (Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet) (2012)

Scary Movie 5 Scary Movie is back after 5 years and I saw it as early as I could in theaters. I didn't think it was the best of the series but still was a good spoof on some of the latest horror films. I agree about the other review how it had a different tone and had more dark humor in it. It mainly focuses on Paranormal Activity but also quite a bit on Black Swan, Mama and Rise Of the Planet Of The Apes. I can't believe how many people dislike the Scary Movie franchise, I even find it a bit underrated. It's not a masterpiece but just great dumb, hilarious spoofs. The pg-13 rating should've been R due to a high amount of sexual content (no actual nudity though) and language. Scary Movie V was mostly enjoyable throughout and delivers many great laughs.

I'm a huge fan of the scary movie series of films, and while I can say I enjoyed this one and LOLed at most times, I can also assure this one doesn't feel like an actual "scary movie". The acting was good, but without Anna Faris or Regina Hall, I just don't feel the same. Much better than the second one to say at least.

Director Malcolm D. Lee (The Soul Men, The Best Man) took a formula story of parody with characters originally created by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Aaron Seltzer and others and a final script by Pat Proft (Real Genius, Police Squad) and David Zucker (Airplane, The Naked Gun) and had some fun making fun of films like `The Help', The Cabin In The Woods', Paranormal Activity, Black Swan and `Rise of the Planet of the apes'.

As the fifth in the line, the comedy is simple and the jokes are always not as obvious, but in `Scary Movie 5' its Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan who have a really funny opening scene of making of a `sex tape' of themselves. Without saying too much, it literally goes over the top and both Charlie and Lindsay obviously have no problem making fun of themselves as well. It is probably the best bit in the film.

Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Suite Life) and Simon Rex (Scary Movie 1,2,3 & 4) play a mother and father who obvious have a house with issues. The movie centers around the two of them realizing and then dealing with the `ghostlike' problem the house is having. People like Snoop Dogg, Mike Tyson, Mac Miller, Big Ang and Sharee Whitefield all make cameo appearance of themselves. All are exaggerated, but definitely making fun of themselves.

Overall it's a video movie for me because the previous films were a little funnier to me and had more gags. I did really enjoy the opening with Charlie and Lindsay and applaud both of them for doing it because it clearly shows that they can laugh at themselves and we along with them. Not for the whole family, but if you're a fan of the series you might enjoy it!

"I think there's something going on in this house. Something about this mama." After Charlie Sheen dies his kids are left to themselves in a cabin in the woods. When they are found they are returned to his brother and his new wife. The new parents discover that the kids are not normal and strange things begin to happen around the house. There really isn't too much I can say about this movie. I will say that it was much better then I expected, but I also expected it to be very awful. I thought the first movie in the series was funny. I didn't like the second one (because of the tin arm guy). The third one was OK and I really don't remember the fourth one but I know I saw it. I was even more leery about this one because Anna Faris isn't in it. I will admit that I laughed out loud a few times throughout but like most spoof movies it starts out funny then by the end you are just waiting for it to be over. I did expect much worse though. Overall, better then I expected and it did make me laugh. I give it a B-.

The Last Days of Disco (The Criterion Collection) (1998)

The Last Days of DiscoDirected by the amazing Whit Stillman ("Barcelona"; "Metropolitan"), "The Last Days of Disco" examines the life of several young, upward, professionals (or "yuppies" for short) during the early 1980's, when the disco craze was dying and the Decade of Decadence was beginning.

Alice (Chloƫ Sevigny of "Boys Don't Cry") and Charlotte (Kate Beckisndale of "Brokedown Palace") are two young publishing assistants who live as roommates in the city. Living on a love/hate relationship with one another, both girls decide to socialize with New York's club elite at the most popular club in the city.

There, they meet up with the likes of advertising execs and employees, odd club characters such as the Tiger Lady (played by Drew Barrymore's real-life mother, Jaid Barrymore) and others who give the film a unique flavor when it comes to recreating the disco era of the late 1970's/early 1980's.

While I really can't give away the details that moves the film to its' conclusion, all I can say that this film blows away the only other disco-era film that was released around the same time, "Studio 54." While the latter tried to recreate the final days of New York City's most infamous nightspot, it failed to capture the energy that disco era was well-known for. Unlike "Studio 54," instead of revolving around the life of one character, "Last Days" focuses on the lives of several young professionals, which gives it more flavor and attraction.

Personally, Whit Stillman simply is one of the best American directors out there. His films all involve wit, energy, love, and the elements that plague young adults now and then. In one I consider to be one of the best-written scripts in recent years, Stillman pours plenty of wit and insight on what it is to be young and successful in a large city.

Another great thing about this film is its' excellent disco-era soundtrack. Covering such classics such as "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross and "Everybody Dance" by Chic, I almost felt that I was transported to the club in the film. If you loved this film, I highly recommend picking up a copy of the soundtrack.

If you love Disco and/or films about life in New York City, I highly recommend this film. It is one of the best films of 1998, and after watching it I can't wait for Whit Stillman's next project.

If you can't stand to watch another exploding helicopter, "Disco" and the other two Whit Stillman movies are a good antidote. The characters actually say interesting things.

You may want to watch "Metropolitan" before watching "The Last Days of Disco" to understand the world the characters come from. You may be a little misled by watching "Metropolitan" first, though. It's a simple, gentle story while "Barcelona" and "Disco" are sexier and set in more exotic locales.

Some reviewers didn't like these movies because the characters speak articulately in fully-formed, grammatically-correct sentences. I can see where they might mistake it for bad writing or acting. The bio commentary on the "Disco" DVD talks about the film crew being impressed by the Sevigny and Beckinsale's ability to recreate New England prep school speech an indication that preppies really talk that way. I'm from California where we're all inarticulate, so I wouldn't know. Ultimately, I don't care people don't break out singing in real life, either, but you wouldn't want to do away with musicals. Notice that the non-preppy characters in these movies talk like "normal" people.

Buy The Last Days of Disco (The Criterion Collection) (1998) Now

Whit Stillman's 1998 film "The Last Days of Disco" remains one of his best pictures a refreshing, intelligent, and often subtly hilarious look at shallow yuppies living, clubbing, and loving at the tail end of the Disco era (i.e. "the very early 1980s"). The demure Chloe Sevigny and the bitchy Kate Beckinsale play a vastly different pair of publishing assistants who decide to room in a New York railroad apartment while they hit the highlife at night with a colorful group of supporting characters -not the least of which include advertising man Mackenzie Astin (who needs the disco to attract clients), club bouncer Chris Eigeman (a Stillman regular), and assistant district attorney Matt Keeslar (who perhaps has both the hots for Sevigny, and ulterior motives for visiting the disco himself).

The performances are uniformly on target, each character believably echoing the frivolous nature of the music, but also the genuine feeling for the time and place they do share. Stillman provides seemingly every character with a vital scene or line of dialogue, and comes down hard on their essentially materialistic ideals while never condemning them or turning the picture into a broadly comic spoof. Sevigny's character, in particular, is a credible portrait of a young girl lost in the big city, emotionally if nothing else, and Beckinsale creates one of the most effectively obnoxious (but believable!) women you're ever likely to see on the big screen, years before the actress dedicated most of her time to becoming a plastic action figure.

They all speak Stillman's prose, which is funny, insightful and hip, making "The Last Days of Disco" engaging and fun, filled with an enjoyable soundtrack, while the director handles each turn -dramatic and (predominantly) comic -with an unabashed love for the era. It may not have a gigantic, thought-provoking point, but then again, neither did the early '80s.

Criterion's Blu-Ray of "The Last Days of Disco" is basically a HD reprise of their 2009 DVD edition, with the added surplus of an excellent 1080p AVC encoded transfer and DTS MA soundtrack. Extras include a commentary from Stillman, Sevigny and Eigeman; four deleted scenes; the trailer, a behind-the-scenes featurette, stills gallery, and an audio recording of Stillman reading a chapter from his book "The Last Days of Disco, with Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards."

The Last Days of Disco is a fantastic movie, but only if you are prepared to really listen to the dialogue.

The thing that I like most about Whit Stillman's movies is his characters dissatisfied and confused with their lives as they may be. My favourite actor in all of Stillman's movies is Chris Eigeman, who always plays a cynical character, who is offensive to all, but who I still find likeable. In The Last Days of Disco, Eigeman is Des, a cocaine snorting, womanising underboss in popular nightclub.

Look out for the hilarious Lady and the Tramp scene in the movie, as well as the scene where Des snorts some hot coffee because it may contain the same effects as cocaine. This is a movie that gets heavy on dialogue, but is worth it. Even though the characters are pompous, they are extremely well developed and acted.

The Last Days of Disco is a fantastic movie, and for me brought alive the disco era in a way that movies such as Studio 54 did not come near. But only for people who like to really watch movies, not just have them on in the background.

"The Last Days of Disco" recalls a specific time the very early 1980's. The video opens with a shot of two young women walking down the street. The shot is framed in such a way that you only see the bottom half of their legs. It's a shot that immediately recalls the disco-era classic, "Saturday Night Fever" with it's similar opening clearly Whit Stillman (who wrote and directed) knows what he's doing.

The film is a sort of coming-of-age story of two book publishing assistants Alice (well played by Chloe Sevigny who can be seen in the current "Boys Don't Cry") and Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale). Looking to expand their social circle, they frequent a hard-to-get-into nightclub (not mentioned but obviously patterned after New York's famed Studio 54). The more experienced Charlotte ("Maybe in physical terms I'm cuter than you but you should be much more popular than I am") gives Alice lots of advice like how she should always try and throw the word "sexy" into her conversation or how Harvard guys can be amazing creeps. She talks of the "tremendous importance of group social life" and claims to oppose "all this ferocious pairing off". She's a bit of a phony, however, which we (like Alice) come to find out. But Stillman rises above making crass judgements about her, he doesn't make fun of her he essentially likes her, as he does all the characters. This includes Des, whose act is to pretend he's recently discovered he's gay in order to gain sympathy from women, before cruelly dumping them.

Deftly observed, "The Last Days of Disco" is one of the best videos I saw in 1998. It's an extremely talky, almost plotless, CHARACTER-driven story. The talk, however, is often very witty. Take, for example, the debate that films like "Lady and the Tramp" program women to adore jerks. Or the idea that the environmental movement started in the 50's after we all saw "Bambi". This is a terrific film that shines a light on a confusing time a time many were scarcely prepared for.

Student Bodies and Jekyll & Hyde Together Again (2011)

Student Bodies and Jekyll & Hyde Together AgainIf you grew up with either or both of these hilarious 80's classics, you will want to own this double blu-ray. Yes, it's two discs... one for each film. This is the absolute best these movies have ever looked. There is some grain, but they are presented in widescreen with the proper aspect ratio for this blu-ray presentation. The clarity is almost too good because you see little flaws you may not have noticed way back when in a theater near you... or on late night cable back in the day. If you love either of these campy but well made comedies (very much a product of their time but still TOTALLY AWESOME!!)don't hesitate to pick up this double bill. I love both of these movies as Student Bodies is the greatest parody of 80's slasher films that ever was or will ever be and Mark Blankfield (from TV's FRIDAY'S back in the 80's) was an absolute genius and it's a shame he didn't do more. Jekyll and Hyde... Together Again is a showcase for Mark and the lovely Bess Armstrong as well.

Jekyll and Hyde: Together Again I have gone through a bunch of movies I loved as a teen and decided to view this one again, as it was one of my favorites. Most of the older movies I watched again were not really worth my time, but this one was just as funny, if not more funny. This is not a movie that can be taken even remotely serious. It is funny in a stupid way and stupid in a funny way. If you just want to laugh at complete idiocy, you will love this movie.

Student Bodies Never watched it and don't really care. I gave this 5 stars simply because Jekyll and Hyde was so worth the cost by itself.

When I received the product I could hear a disk rattling in the case before I opened it. The Jekyll and Hyde diskwas loose but didn't appear scratched so I tried playing it but it didn't work in by bluray dvd player. I then tried it in my computer and my computer recognized it as a movie but said "disk corrupted" and didn't play it. I asked for a return online and Amazons service was great. I returned the old one and got a replacement shipped out. When the replacement arrived the same disk was loose in the case and again it didn't look scratched. I tried to play it but got the same error. I think the problem is in the way the movie is burned for both disks to be messed up.

Jekyll and Hyde is undoubtedly one of the funniest movies of its time that was grossly overlooked. Now it's a cult classic and deservedly so. If you don't laugh at this one, you're brain dead.

Mac & Devin Go to High School (2012)

Mac & Devin Go to High SchoolEvery generation needs its great stoner comedies! Who better than vocal supporters of the smoke, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, to usher in a cool and contemporary new vision of high times at high school? Seemed like a great idea and I was actually rooting for "Mac and Devin Go To High School" to be a mind altering good time. Aside from a few amusing ideas, though, this Snoop Dogg production harshed my mellow. Painfully unfunny and utterly plotless, this barely even qualifies as a movie. Form start to finish, it runs just over an hour which includes two full musical numbers and a series of unrelated man-on-the-street interviews to serve as filler. Without these elements, it would be more like forty minutes. Even that might be acceptable if the movie offered any entertainment value. Not even half-baked does this qualify as fun. Its humor is almost non-existent, its performances are lifeless, and its graphics are amateurish (seriously, the special effects are done on someone's home computer so don't expect any big fun psychedelic interludes). Heck, it works more as an educational film about chronic than anything else. Even the worst stoner comedies embrace their over-the-top silliness, I just can't believe how dull this is!

The movie starts out great. A talking blunt named Slow Burn (voiced by Mystikal) introduces the film and is both amusing and creative. Forget about the "real" actors, I'd have preferred the entire story to revolve around Slow Burn! He pops up once or twice more and is the only character that I thought was interesting. Snoop Dogg plays a high school student who's in his fifteenth year as a senior (his actual age would probably put that at closer to 20 or 25). He's the resident bad boy and dealer, a rebel that everyone loves and all women want to be with. Wiz Khalifa, on the other hand, plays an uptight scholar looking to make a success of his life. Of course, being educated, working hard, or being ambitious are all attributes worthy of scorn as the screenplay continually tells us. Snoop takes Khalifa under his wing and the pair spend the rest of the movie smoking. That's about all the plot you get aside from a throw-away side story where Snoop must graduate to get with a hot substitute teacher. Serious drama! I mean what woman in her right mind wouldn't think he was a catch?

Again, I wasn't expecting "Mac and Devin Go To High School" to be some big epic. I just wanted it to be funny. The soundtrack, which came out seven months ago, has the hit "Young, Wild, and Free" which gets a big production number at the graduation ceremony. But trust me, the music doesn't save you from the utter boredom of the rest of the movie. Mike Epps is wasted in a small role and Andy Milonakis (who I generally like) is quite annoying. But as loud and over-the-top as Milonakis is, at least he's trying to breathe some life into the film! Stoned or stone cold sober, this was a big disappointment that felt completely homemade. Should have been stupid fun, but its not even smart enough to reach for that. KGHarris, 6/12.

One of the worst stoner flicks Ive ever seen. If you're looking for some Cheech and Chong, Half Baked, Jay and Silent Bob etc etc THIS AINT IT! The 2 stars is for Snoop, and the cameos. Least it was cheap through Amazon, even being that its a Blu Ray. Still a total waste of cash.

Im not a pot smoker, but thought it be fun, it was really bad but if I was high who knows maybe I'd love it. Unless your a pot smoker and even if you are I'd say pass. It's not as fun as you think it would be.

The film opens up with a talking joint informing you that the only way to watch this film is to be stoned. It is designed to be cheesy and campy with names like "N. Hale High School" and "Ralph Skinnfloot". It has an immaturity appeal to it. The plot is immaterial and the film would have been better as a "Groovetube" type film than trying to follow a plot about an old pot dealer in HIGH school.

The humor was re-hashed (pardon my drug pun) jokes and dialouge that would indeed sound better stoned. The movie suggests that you smoke pot continuously. Even seasoned pot smokers know better than that. The cartoon aspect of the film was good as was the talking joint with the bloodshot eyes. If they had incorporated the joint into the film, rather than someone talking as an aside, I think that would have been more entertaining to a stoned audience.

Parental Guide: Over abundance of F-bombs and N-words. Sex and Nudity. Sex talk.

Bought the movie and got it sent to my ship... When I received it my fellow sailors took it and watched it before I did... A bunch of them would walk up to me and tell me I need to watch the movie it's funny as $&@! So finally I got time to actually sit down and watch it and I was amazed at how funny the movie actually ended up to be. Wish it took place in the 412 tho....

Wrong (+ Digital Copy) (2012)

WrongI didn't like Rubber much, but the movie had some really good moments, so I decided to give the director's new movie a try. It turned out to be far more suited for me I couldn't stop laughing during this one, and kept smirking to myself with remembered scenes for a few days afterwards. All of the enjoyment of this movie comes from layered absurdity notable because of the artfulness of the situations (it definitely isn't American slapstick). Speaking of artfulness, the movie has a very pleasant bout of cinematography and soundtrack, making it a very well rounded comedy. I'll be sticking it back in my player more than a few times.

Dupieux has quite a one-of-a-kind style. Wrong and Rubber really stand out from the crowd. I wonder if he'll be sort of be like the "Wes Anderson" of comedic films.

It was absurd. Perhaps I was simply unable to perceive anything else. Perhaps it was absurd for absurdity's sake. Personally, if I could go back in time, I'd tell myself to save my money or rent something else.

If you're not familiar with Quentin Dupieux, you can start slowly. Watch a few of the music videos he made for his own music (Mr Oizo) as well as for others. Assuming that you had a good laugh and/or that your head started to shake on the beat, you may be ready for what's next.

It's always hazardous to compare a director to another but we'll have to agree that Quentin Dupieux is ideologically closer to Spike Jonze (being John Malkovitch) and Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine.../science of dreams) than he is to Michael Bay.

It's surreal, it's really well done, with good actors, great and efficient cinematography and a smart use of music ( that he's co-signing). It's sweet by times, really funny overral, and not like anything you've seen so far.

It's a director's work in a sense that Dupieux is behind the wheel with a total creative control (clap clap clap) and it's not for everybody and oh do we love that !

Each new movie is a milestone. "Wrong" is probably his most elaborated movie so far. I can't wait for the next one.

Dolph Springer (Jack Plotnick) wakes up one morning to realize that his beloved dog Paul has gone missing, but that's the least of Dolph's problems. His life only begins to get weirder and practically spirals down the drain as he crosses paths with his gardener Victor (Eric Judor), a pizza delivery girl named Emma (Alexis Dziena) who becomes obsessed with Dolph, a strange detective named Ronnie (Steve Little), the mysterious Master Chang (William Fichtner), and Dolph's jogger-in-denial next door neighbor Mike (Regan Burns). Meanwhile Dolph just wants to find his dog.

Quentin Dupieux made the eccentrically absurd yet glorious film "Rubber" and birthed at least one lifetime fan because of it. It was because of that film that the anticipation for "Wrong" was so high. At its core "Wrong" is a more grounded film than "Rubber." Compare a telepathic car tire that makes people's heads explode to a guy looking for his dog and "Wrong" seems like a more traditional experience on the surface, but "Wrong" is actually way more out there than Dupieux's previous effort.

The film begins with a group of firefighters lounging around a fire truck as a van slowly simmers in flames. One of the firefighters starts texting while another drops trow and begins reading a newspaper. The score starts off as this tribute to 8-bit video game soundtracks, but slowly evolves into something more synth heavy that sounds like it's straight out of the 80s. Dolph's clock rolls over to 7:60 every morning and that blank letter he receives with nothing but a stamp on it is never addressed (best accidental pun ever). After realizing Paul is gone, he spends the morning talking to Emma about how absurd it is that the logo of a pizza place would be a rabbit riding a motorcycle when the rabbit is fast enough as it is on its own.

Dolph encounters a police officer who's incredibly indecisive and seems to dislike everything for reasons he won't disclose. Dolph works in an office building where it's always raining inside and his gardener reveals that the palm tree in Dolph's yard turned into a pine tree overnight. A painter likes to paint people's parked vehicles different colors while they're away and Detective Ronnie strings together an elaborate conglomeration of impressive vulgarity. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the insane events that transpire in "Wrong." It's the type of film where you can reveal everything and the viewer still won't know what they're in for.

Every character acts really strange in "Wrong." The cop (Mark Burnham) and Emma in particular aren't very good actors. Emma's voice is nerve grating and it doesn't really become an issue until she encounters Dolph in person while the cop just seems a bit stiff in his line delivery. Dolph is perhaps the most normal of the bunch, but the unusual behavior by everyone around him doesn't really seem to affect him as he's constantly asking questions that only encourage them. William Fichtner seems to be purposely talking with a bad accent and the Master Chang character relies on incessant rambling.

"Wrong" is like the most insane statement against animal abuse ever. It's never boring and no one will be able to predict where it's headed, but it's overflowing with nonsense and it's sure to be misunderstood by a fair portion of those that encounter it. "Wrong" and "Rubber" do have the concept of telepathy in common, but "Wrong" is otherwise a completely different animal for Dupieux to add to his resume. With all of its robe mocking, its pet kidnapping service, its squeaky turkey dog toys, and most of all its turd memories, "Wrong" is one of the most unique films you'll ever sit through.

Gray's Anatomy (The Criterion Collection) (1997)

Gray's AnatomyIncredible writer and monologuist Spalding Gray takes us on an incredible journey, around the world and through his soul. Though based on his his attempts to avoid dangerous eye surgery, the story is really about meeting fascinating characters and Gray's own fascinating neuroses. If the idea of a monologue sounds boring to you -basically Gray sitting and telling you a story -I especially challenge you to try this out.

While dry, Gray's humor keeps you laughing out loud. You'll find it mesmerizing, and at the end of your own journey through the film, changed for the better. Highly recommended.

Spalding Gray's death has left us poorer than when we started. How evident this is after viewing this edgy, moving, often riotous monologue directed by Stephen Soderbergh.

A macular "pucker" leaves Gray virtually blind in one eye. Born into Christian Science, Gray leaves the church when his CS practitioner demands he renounce allopathic medicine to receive help. Gray's breathless journeys through alternative healing remind us that we all face mortality at any cost, and that no religious or philosopical system will spare us the inevitability of suffering or dying.

What I loved most about this film were Gray's frequent outbursts of humor -framed in frustration, delivered in sentences which resonate like poetry in the mind, this guy rages -quite literally -against the dying of the light. And I would add that this is a film best viewed late at night.

While Soderbergh's direction is occasionally heavy-handed and selfconscious, it is still creative and ambitious and will never disqualify this film from classic status.

The movie doesn't benefit from the opening montage of "eye horror stories" delivered by subjects who almost lost their sight, and who occasionally make an unwelcome visit into Gray's monologue. Happily, Gray gets 'round them.

The man had a brilliant, brilliant mind and a great heart. Watch this, and the only thing you risk is awareness of his absence, and it is a sad feeling.

I just loved this movie, or should I say: I loved this mirror.

This is a wonderful example of the 'gift of gab' that is, the art of telling a story. Spalding Gray has a story to tell mind you, the plot is not nearly as interesting as, say, a Jedi Knight fighting a battle in a galaxy far, far away. It is not so much what he has to say, but how he says it. If one of your favorite childhood memories includes sitting around a campfire listening to someone spinning a yarn about a headless ghost, then you might enjoy this more adult version of a scary story. Substitute the encounter with a headless horseman with an even more frightening trip to see a doctor to diagnose an incurable medical condition and you may start to understand this movie. It was fascinating listening to his tangential logic, flashbacks, and digressions of a gifted story teller. It is also somewhat of an insight into the mind Spalding Gray, whose favorite story was the life experience he gained by walking around Washington Square Park several times, breathing in all of life's drama.

once you get it, you will never forget it: to wit, how unique and singular it is to be a great storyteller. we discover this by the way this show opens. a slew of people from everyday life tell their stories of how an eye condition altered their lives. i found myself nodding off as i sat through this, admiring the infrared film but finding the rest of it yawn inducing. then i was electrified by spalding gray's coming onscreen. by solely using his monolog skills, he holds me spellbound while he relates his eye injury story. it is a story i will never forget because its telling sears it into my memory.

it was sad to realize anew what a huge talent we lost with his suicide in 2004. ironically, with life later imitating art, spalding gray was in a serious car collision after he filmed this. he could not handle the pain, the constant physical therapy, the constant use of crutchess, etc., this in part led to his suicide. in this film we watch his hysteria over the prospect of a low risk eye surgery for the not painful condition of macular puckering in the eye. he was a complete mess over this eye problem alone but in a very woody allen like neurotic way.
