There's Something About Mary (1998)

There's Something About MaryI really can't understand how this one didn't get five stars from everyone here. I mean I know that tastes differ, but I think people may have been expected something this one couldn't possibly deliver. As a comedy, it is absolutely phenomenal. I really have to say that it's the only movie of the nineties that can match up with Stripes or Animal House. It's utterly amazing.

There's Something about Mary is a mélange of every kind of comedy. There's slapstick, physical situation, and intellectual social satire. This movie made Ben Stiller and rightly so. I recall seeing it in the theatre and not being able to breathe at times due to the convulsions erupting from my abdomen. No time was this more true than when Stiller walks into the gay rest stop and gets busted, but there are a million scenarios that could be cited. All the actors were sensational. Matt Dillon's character is exquisite in his cheesiness and he really excels in his role especially when he's playing football with the "retards" and showing off his sensitive side by pummeling them on the gridiron. Chris Elliot is exceptional in his role and any film that features Jonathan Richman that much is special and rare. I could not recommend this one any more.

You will laugh from begining to end with this movie. The humor is very crude at times, but not raunchy. I found myself saying,"oh my" and at the same time laughing out loud.

The storyline is unpredictable and extremely enjoyable.

It is a comedy and love story all in one, intertwined superbly.

I wouldn't recommend watching this with your mom and dad. I am 37 and would have crawled under the carpet if my mom and dad were in the room watching this movie during the scenes "before the big date."

I hate it when they don't create a Blu Ray with a proper master copy! Why the hell would they bother using a lower quality copy to create this??!?! It's just plain lazy. Don't bother buying, as it is obviously about the same picture quality as the DVD you already own!

WAKE UP MOVIE STUDIOS!! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HIGH DEF, FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER, WHY WOULD WE BOTHER BUYING IT IF THE PICTURE IS THE SAME AS DVD!!!

The Farrelly brothers, who gave us Dumb And Dumber, Kingpin, and Me Myself And Irene, direct There's Something About Mary, a movie that stars Ben Stiller (Meet The Parents), Cameron Diaz (The Mask, Gangs Of New York), Matt Dillon (The Outsiders, Crash), Chris Elliot (Groundhog Day, Scary Movie 2), and many others.

Mary is a story about a Rhode Island loser named Ted, played by Stiller, who can't keep his high school dreamgirl Mary, played by the charming Diaz, out of his mind 13 years after their prom date went terribly wrong way before it happened. He hires an obnoxious guy named Patrick, played by Dillon, to spy on her and tell him what she's been up to. Well, Patrick falls for Mary, and decides to move out to Florida where she resides to get to know her, and he does. Ted discovers that Patrick isn't giving him the truth about Mary and goes out to find her himself. It turns out that Mary has many admirers who try to win her heart (or shoes!) besides the lonely Ted. So the movie becomes a race on who can get her first and forever.

It's a silly tale but under the Farrellys direction, it's a surefire laugh-fest all the way through. Expect to see lots of sick humor like a guy giving a dog CPR, or bodily fluids used as toiletries. Also, the characters in Mary are funny by nature. The funniest character of them all is Warren, Mary's handicapped and heavy set brother, who punches people who touch his ears and loves to give piggy back rides.

This was an interesting movie. It kept me laughing so hard that the next morning my stomach muscles felt as if I had done about a 1000 crunches. You will truly enjoy this one, but if you are soft of heart, weak of stomach or easily offended this may not be the movie for you.

Bad Boy Bubby (1993)

Bad Boy BubbyI recently discovered this Australian film while looking through IMDB and was intrigued by the premise of a grown man kept housebound by his mother for the entire 35 years of his life. Considered quite disturbing and controversial at the time (1993) for its portrayal of animal abuse, incest, and blasphemy, it pushes the bounds of good taste and decency even now 17 years later, with an steady and unrelenting stream of bizarre encounters, visual obscenities, and vulgar utterances. It is a long movie, clocking in at almost 2 hours, and can be slow at times. After watching it, I'm not quite sure what to make of my experience except to say I feel disoriented and exhausted. Billed as a black comedy/drama and shot by 31 different cinematographers, director Rolf de Heer describes it as one big experiment. All I can say is, to misquote a line from the film, Christ, this is a weird movie.

I can best describe "Bad Boy Bubby" as what would happen if Forrest Gump were directed by Marilyn Manson (or the other Manson). As described above, Bubby (think Billy Bob Thornton of Sling Blade mated with Hugo Weaving) is a developmentally challenged male who has been kept inside a small rundown tenement by his mother his entire life. Verbally and physically abused, she puts the fear of corporal punishment and God in him so he stays quite and docile. At night, she has sexual relations with him. Told that the outside world is filled with poison gas, she dons a gas mask before leaving and tells him to be still until she returns lest she beats him brainless. We see him mimic the actions and verbal abuse of his mother on a stray cat he finds. He later clingwraps and unknowingly suffocates the animal because his mom told him cats don't breathe as an excuse for why the cat came from outside and didn't die from the supposed poisonous air. Unexpectedly, his father returns after 35 years and proceeds to have sexual relations with Bubby's mom. Already having developed a fascination with large breasts, it is reinforced by the Pop's lecherous behavior and fondness for his wife's "great big whoppers".

After Pop walks in on Bubby fondling his mom's breasts, Pop goes into a rage and kicks Bubby out. From here, he is forced into the real world and embarks on one twisted encounter after another. Some of it is painful to watch because they do tend to be slow and aimless, like Bubby's life. If this is a comedy, I didn't laugh at his misfortunes at interacting with the world, not out of any sense of 21st Century political sensitivity, but mainly because they weren't funny. I did laugh at one scene of Bubby when he gets put in jail and sodomized by "the Animal". This is maybe the only movie you'll see sodomy set to the music of bagpipes. Bobby takes it in stride, so to speak, as he accepts the abuse that is such a routine in his life. An expression of serenity crosses his face. The rest of the story has Bubby having more weird experiences, but eventually, he finds his place in the world. He discovers his humanity, and even discovers love. I found the story arc a bit unbelievable, especially towards the end, but I won't spoil the surprise.

All in all, I can't say that this was a thoroughly pleasurable experience. It really felt like an exercise in avant-garde filmmaking or an assignment from a film class. There are several scenes of nudity, copious amounts of cussing, and unapologetic blasphemy. I can't say that I gained any insight into cinema, the human condition, or other intellectual merits of this film, and for that I'm giving it a 3/5. Definitely rent it first.

I will start this off with a warning. I watch messed up movies and this one is really messed up. If you can not handle a movie that is going to make you feel bad about yourself for watching it, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE

NON SPOILER SUMMARY:

Bad Boy Bubby is about a man that has been sheltered from society his whole life and finally at 35 he gets to discover the world for the first time in the 90's. This movie is not gorey but it does contain disturbing scenes, a significant amount of nudity (male and female) and fake animal abuse. this movie is very well made and will have you feeling strongly for the main character and feeling his pain through the movie. this movie's plot is hard to see coming and by then end you are rooting for bubby.

SOME SPOILERS; IF YOU NEED MORE INFO:

It starts out showing Bubby getting sexually and physically abused by his mother. Bubby is a 35 year old shut in that has been kept from the rest of the world and only knows his mother and his cat. Bubby has the emotional maturity of a 5 year old and does not fully know how to intereact with people. The begining of this movie is hard to watch because of the abuse Bubby recieves.

Bubby escapes from his mother and is introduced to the real world. he discovers music and pizza for the first time and it is very interesting to watch him interact with other people. We follow Bubby as he makes friends and falls in love, the ending is a pretty good shocker and it will leave you with a big WTF by then end.

NOT A SPOILER:

Get this movie and watch it. the main actor does an amazing job and if you enjoyed the movie you need to watch the extras too. this movie will have you thinking and creep you out pretty well.

I won't attempt to describe the movie right now other that to say that it is truly one of my favorite movies.......ever. Not really relevant here, but I am so lucky that my lovely fiancee likes this movie as much as I do. When she comes from Sweden to visit she wants to see it again.

March of the Wooden Soldiers (3D Blu-Ray)

March of the Wooden SoldiersThere are two versions offered for sale at Amazon. The Koch Vision Entertainment version, despite the description in the technical details, is NOT COLORIZED. The Goodtimes Home Video version version IS colorized. Which you prefer is entirely up to you, but don't order the Koch Vision version if you want the movie in color. The Koch Vision version has an extended silent film extra of the first time Laurel and Hardy appeared together (NOT as a team, however). The extra is interesting, but (by today's standards anyhow) a little slow. The Goodtimes Entertainment (Colorized) version, although a few cents cheaper than the other version, is, in my opinion, a much "cleaner" print. Even with the color level turned down so it appears as the original B&W, the Goodtimes version is sharper and more distinct. March of the Wooden Soldiers, holds up pretty well.

The Laurel and Hardy classic, March of the Wooden Soldiers (originally released as Babes in Toyland), was the fantastic result of combining two tremendous talents with a childlike, fantasy world and adult situations (Laurel and Hardy, Toyland and an evil landlord's mortgage conspiracy, respectively). Such rich source material makes for a film of unsurpassed quality: featuring rich and imaginative environments, costumes, sights and sounds. Every fairytale has its day, from Little Bo Peep to the Three Little Pigs to Mother Goose, and even Santa. We all know that the winter months are a time to remember to greatest holiday classics from years past, and March of the Wooden Soldiers is unsurpassed in its genre.

The holidays are associated with bright and festive colors--bright reds, greens, blues and golds--that set a warm and cheery mood, and the movies that we choose to enjoy during this season are no different. Fortunately, this edition of March of the Wooden Soldiers has been colorized, bringing newfound vibrancy to the events on screen and helping to integrate this classic tale with the traditional warmth of the holiday season. Rather than a visually dull grayscale that reminds one of the dour winter weather, toy soldiers shimmer in brilliant red onscreen, and our two comedian leads are further humanized by their newfound flesh tones and colorful Christmas garb.

As colorization efforts go, March of the Wooden Soldiers is a superlative effort, looking as though it was originally produced in the first generation of Technicolor, rather than decades earlier. The producers in charge of this re-mastering effort clearly thought that we would find an "aged color" appearance more acceptable than attempting to make it look completely modern, and this approach works very well. I'm sure you'll agree if you see a preview.

It's worth noting that this disc also includes the black and white version of the movie, perhaps as a peace offering to those of you who might object to the alteration of a classic film. I would go so far, then, as to call this the definitive purchase of March of the Wooden Soldiers, not just because you'll have a choice between color and black and white, but because the first step in colorizing any movie is to "clean up" the pre-existing black and white material as much as possible, and it certainly shows in comparison with other versions available.

In addition to both versions of the movie, this disc's special features really push it over the top. As a media buff, the included classic trailers are a wonderful prelude to the main feature--I like to imagine that I'm getting the same experience as the audiences who first viewed Laurel and Hardy some seventy years ago. And, in keeping with this package's holiday theme, the animated Rudolph the Reindeer movie is thoughtfully included, ensuring that you and your family get the most value out of a single disc.

For any family or fan of holiday cinema, this package is definitely a must-buy.

Wow is all I can say! Laurel and Hardy's March of the Wooden Soldiers (aka Babes in Toyland) has never looked better. Legend Films and Genius Products found rare 35mm film elements and did a high definition digital restoration to create the finest looking black-and-white version of this L&H holiday classic ever seen. And to beat that, they created a stunning new COLOR version on the same DVD with a new Colorization technology. It really looks like it was shot in color. This disc is then jammed full of great bonus features to take any nostalgic viewer down Christmas memory lane. This DVD is FAR superior to the Goodtimes version (I viewed them side by side) and well worth the extra couple of dollars. I highly recommend this new definitive version of March of the Wooden Soldiers (with the Red box) both for yourself or for a gift.

The "review" from Robert Badgley of March Of The Wooden Soldiers is certainly not the truth and clearly appears to be written by someone with a strange agenda. I suggest he get his facts straight before writing such a misleading, false and defamatory review. Amazon reviews are intended to inform, not mislead and misinform.

I was personally responsible for producing the prior color release from Goldwyn and I am also responsible for producing the current color and black and white release from Legend Films.

This was truly a lost Laurel and Hardy film. Film prints of this movie have gone from distributor to distributor and are well worn. However, both Goldwyn and a renowned distributor and collector provided 35mm material to produce a complete print that is widely recognized to be the highest quality. In my previous colorization company, American Film Technologies, I transferred that 35mm print to analog one-inch video tape. While extremely inferior by today's standards, one-inch video tape was the industry standard in video resolution at the time.

Now, for the FIRST TIME the Goldwyn film of March Of The Wooden Soldiers has been transferred Digitally in High Definition. The black and white High Definition tape, was completely restored using the Legend Films proprietary restoration technology. Then with the latest colorization process the film was colorized in High Definition resolution. This is the same Legend Films process used by Martin Scorsese to produce color special effects for The Aviator. The resulting color frames were then used to create a new High Definition colorized version. So you have on the Legend Films DVD, both the fully restored black and white version and a separate, fully restored color version.

By every measure, I believe the Legend Films DVD release is the highest quality black and white and color version of March Of The Wooden Soldiers that exists anywhere today.

This Laurel and Hardy treasure remains the definitive holiday movie. "March of the Wooden Soldiers" (the original "Babes in Toyland") is a timeless musical-comedy with Stan and Ollie in top form abetted by stylish sets and visual effects. Most "colorized" films are an artistic desecration; however, this particular video is rendered in low-key pastels that resemble early Technicolor. The results are better than expected. Laurel and Hardy fans should be doubly pleased because this uncut version contains a delightful "storybook" sequence which hasn't been shown since the film's initial release in 1934. There have been several remakes of "Babes in Toyland," but none can match the original's effortless charm.

Men in Black (1997)

Men in BlackWow! This limited edition isn't limited in features. Disc one has the wide and full screen versions, visual commentry with Barry Sonnenfeld and Tommy Lee Jones and a technical audio commentry with Sonnenfeld, Rick Baker & the ILM team; this feature is exclusive to the limited edition version. Throw in the standards like the sound setups: English 5.1, english 2-channel (Dolby Surround) and french (Dolby Surround) and subtitles that include english, french, spanish, cantonese and mandarin, and that wraps up disc one! Disc Two is loaded! I can't list them all or I will use up all my space, so I will list the major ones. There is a 3 scene editing workshop which allows you to become the filmmaker, so to speak. You get to edit 3 chosen scenes that were filmed in a lot of different angles and then watch the final cut. Sonnenfeld will also descibe his own editing process. Next, there is a Edgar bug fight scene deconstruction using different angles. Then you have "concept to creation" creatures feature and art and production photo gallery. There are extended & deleted scenes, storyboard comparisons, a documentary, a music video, DVD & web links, trailers, talent files and more! Whew! I said there was a lot, and as you can see, I wasn't exaggerating. Throw in a booklet and letter from Sonnenfeld and small poster which may be signed by the artists and you have a DVD with enough features to keep you entertained and busy. Quickly, the transfer was beautiful and, of course, the movie is great. This movie was one of my favorite Will Smith roles. Aside from the comedy woven into the script, the special effects were great! This is a must have for any fan of the movie or comic book! Enjoy!

Men in Black was one of my favourite Hollywood blockbusters of the '90s. One of only a handful successful comic-book translations in history, the film retained the irreverence and zany creativity of the best comics while adding the visual grandeur, attention to detail, and narrative focus of the best features.

Rewatching this movie now, it's lost none of its charm. The meticulous Bo Welch production design is superb, director Barry Sonnenfeld's sense of pacing and comic timing impeccable, the Danny Elfman score absolutely perfect for its subject, and the cast is uniformly excellent. Nobody else could have played the role of Agent Jay with such pizazz as Will Smith; Tommy Lee Jones delivers hands-down his best comic performance ever, Linda Fiorentino is delightfully weird as coroner Dr. Laurel Weaver, Rip Torn nearly steals the show as perennially grumpy, inscrutable agency head Zed, and Vincent D'Onofrio is fun to watch as Farmer Edgar/Edgar Bug.

The bonus materials are also great. The "editing workshop", which allows you to play with alternate footage and put together a new version of one of two scenes, is my personal favourite (although I actually agree with Sonnenfeld's poker-faced quip that, "[The audience] will find out that everything I did was perfect). "The evolution of MiB" gives a hint of the major changes that happen on (to) a big movie as it's being made, and the MIIB (Men in Black 2) teasers definitely suggest that MIIB is a must-see for summer 2002.

Based on the comic book of the same name, these guys keep the aliens living among us under wraps. A lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and a new way of looking at a multitude of aliens , good and evil, small and large.

Will Smith makes the movie entertaining and the special effects quality and originality will keep you from blinking. Fun gadgets will also intrigue the sci-fi afficianado. This full-featured DVD is well-worth the money, especially with the multi-angle shots. I've already seen this on tape a number of times and I'm anxious to get this limited edtion DVD edtion.

There is some language, but not much beyond what you'd see on prime-time TV nowadays. Very enjoyable and entertaining.

It's a fun movie, even if it isn't a cinematic masterpiece. Just a joy to watch, it's well paced, funny and slick. It has undercover agencies, aliens, and Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones,a nd lots (I mean lots) of jokes and a touch of action and mayhem. Gotta love this classic summer fun flick!

The Blu Ray edition is stunning; while some of the special effects didn't age as well as I'd have liked, picture quality and sound quality were both phenomenal, noticeably better than DVD. Colors were crisp, there was minimal grain and noise. Watching this on my 50" plasma was a total blast. This was hi def done right and a great showcase for the capability of blu ray. I haven't really explored the extras much, but they seem pretty normal--commentaries and the like. Fox should take lessons from this and fix some of their abysmal transfers (Predator, I'm looking at you!).

Boogie Woogie (2009)

Boogie WoogieThis is a dark, dark look at the world of artists and those who deal in art. Calling this a black comedy is a gross understatement. Essentially everyone in this armpit of existence is in it for themselves. All are jockeying for position to get more, more, more for themselves. And they'll screw or screw over whomever they have to to get what they want.

There are a couple of stories running throughout this film. On one end you have Stellan Skaarsgard (an art collector) and Danny Huston (his art broker) trying to screw each other by outbidding each other to buy a piece of art (The Boogie Woogie of the title) which the owner, Chrostopher Lee, doesn't even want to sell. Meanwhile, Skaarsgard's assistant, Heather Graham, wants his backing to open her own gallery and start with a show by a maybe up and and coming video artist. To do so she will screw said artist's current promoter and screw Skaarsgard out of his cut. And Skaarsgard's wife, Gillian Anderson, will fool around with another up and comer and then want a divorce which will lead to more people screwing other people. You get the picture.

This is an acerbic view of how this part of society works. Everyone's disregard for the feelings of the people around them is unbelievable. There is a scene where Skaarsgard presents a "gift" to his new assistant. How, in anyone's world, this would be considered an appropriate gift is way beyond me.

The director, Duncan Ward, does a great job of giving you the look and feel for that part of London. The beauty, the hipness, the wealth and the attitude. All the acting is good and the writing is, for the most part, outstanding. Some might consider it "too", and they're probably right which is why I didn't give this the big FIVE stars. But all in all this is a great ride. It moves at a quick pace and doesn't linger on anything too long. I can recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in this part of existence.

This movie snuck up on me....I knew the loveyly Heather Grahmn was in it but that was it. Let me say that it was very funny and Heather looked amazing....She always brings something new to the table in each of her movies.

All I can say is that you won't be bored and that you may be surprise by how much you like it....

No spolilers here.....just my opninon....

I know critics and fair share of movie fans didn't like this movie. I don't think it was bad in my opinion. I find if you are a person who loves your art cinema, you will excuse most of the inconsistent plotting and find a lot the subject matter related to the art world and its artists quite relateable. The acting is enjoyable and made the plot work despite its choppiness. All in all, I believe the movie worked thanks to actors involved and the art gallery finale had alot of a life imitating art that saved the flim.

Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007)

Mr. Bean's HolidayThe movie:

Some chuckle moments, but not Bean at his finest. Picture quality is a lot better than the DVD counterpart, but sadly one of the funniest parts has been omitted from this UK release. For some reason the laptop scene at the beginning is cut, which is a shame because this is a classic Bean moment and I can think of several scenes I would have rather chopped before this. I suspect the over officious BBFC has a part to play here.

The Disc:

Presentation is as bare bones as it gets with the same extras as the DVD. The laptop scene can be once again be viewed in wonderful standard definition as part of the deleted scenes segment albeit minus the fight on the platform.

This is a region free disc and so I recommend looking at the Amazon.UK website as it's considerably cheaper.

This movie is far better than the first Mr. Bean movie. The plot is funnier and the characters, even Mr. Bean, are more sympathetic. And Willem Dafoe's appearance as an egotistical movie star is priceless.

Brother's Justice (Bluray/DVD Combo) (2010)

Brother's JusticeJudge Daniel Kelly, DVD Verdict-I'm not sure why Dax Shepard decided to make Brother's Justice, the bit-part comic's fake documentary about his trying to become a martial arts action star. Maybe he just wanted an I'm Still Here to call his own, although no viewer will be arguing about this project's authenticity after the final credits roll. Shepard has designed Brother's Justice to play purely for laughs, gently riffing on bruised Hollywood egos, absurd pet projects, and the ignorance that regularly accompanies fame. All of these themes were admittedly used better in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, but that's not to say Brother's Justice doesn't have enough laughs to deem it rental worthy.

Brother's Justice just about holds together for its brief 80 minute runtime, providing a short but very digestible dosage of ridiculous comedy. Shepard doesn't make many fresh points during the course of the movie (he paints himself as deluded, self-important, and homophobic throughout); instead beating on the same satirical doors that have already served dozens of other lampoons. However, there's a true commitment to silliness here that can't be faulted, Shepard unafraid to make himself or anyone else look like a fool in pursuit of laughs. There are at least three very funny sequences in Brother's Justice, Shepard's knack for sly improvisations helping to sate audience desire for giggles during the drier patches. Ultimately I foundBrother's Justice to be a moderately entertaining and totally tolerable experience. It's uneven and unoriginal, but it's got chutzpah to burn.

Aesthetically the movie adopts a low-fi vibe (in an attempt to concoct the illusion of reality), only breaking from handheld camera work during occasional trailers (Tropic Thunder again?) for other stories Shepard is trying to make. Bar the very last of these (entitled "Jeung Guns") none really work, they're overproduced and generally unfunny. I expect these were added late in production to beef up the final product, but there was really no need, they add little to the sense of fun permeating from the picture.

-Full review at dvdverdict.com

Dax Shepard is hilarious and there are some great moments with Ashton Kutcher, Tom Arnold, Bradley Cooper, David Koechner, Seth Green (in the deleted scenes) and other funny familiar faces.
