30 Nights of Paranormal Activity With the DevilI knew that mocking the scary movies can be fun, but this doesn't even come close. Total waste of time and money.

Wow, who knew a parody film could be this unfunny? Usually you can get a couple of good laughs... not here. This movie makes the Wayan's brothers look like comedic genius's. I can't believe I watched the whole thing, but I'm here to warn you stay away. It's no gem awaiting discovery THERE IS A REASON YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS "FILM"

Craig Moss may be the single most untalented writer and director that ever lived, as evidenced by 30 NIGHTS OF PARANORMAL ACTIVITY WITH THE DEVIL INSIDE THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, the latest in low-brow Horror spoofs that is a disgrace to the art of filmmaking. Moss takes on everything from the "found-footage" genre to Storage Wars and other lame pop culture references, posing only the most basic and expected humor to an increasingly irritated audience. When the idiotic attempts at parody fail, Moss falls back on what he knows best: crude sex and fart jokes. Moss selfishly allows the awful cast to make complete fools of themselves on screen, ensuring their availability for his next project (should anyone allow him to work again). 30 NIGHTS OF PARANORMAL ACTIVITY WITH THE DEVIL INSIDE THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO should serve as an embarrassment to all parties involved in its creation, but especially to French Stewart, Peter Gilroy, and Tyler Phillips, who are most likely to face public ridicule for their performances. Without needing to see another film, 30 NIGHTS OF PARANORMAL ACTIVITY WITH THE DEVIL INSIDE THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO should be voted "Worst in 2013."

This is another multiple movie spoof. The main movie that is spoofed is "Paranormal Activity 3", considering the role of the pool crawler. If I claimed I got every spoof and pop culture reference, I would be a liar. The movie starts out with found footage of a man who killed the cast of "The Artist" in 1989. Clearly this is a spoof of the multiple anachronisms that have popped up in the Paranormal series. Fans of Adele and "The Black Swan" be forewarned as they are not treated kindly.

The humor is course and crude for too much of the film. It ruined what good scenes and satire the writers came up with. Early in the film they have multiple camera men shooting from different angles etc. Later in a scene we see the director. Again spoofs of the absurdity of these films. In addition to movies being spoofed, TV shows are spoofed as well as pop games and Internet porn.

Being hip to pop culture is a must to enjoy this film. If you enjoyed this feature, you might want to catch "A Haunted House."

Kevin Hart: I'm a Grown Little Man

Kevin Hart: I'm a Grown Little ManI first saw Kevin Hart on Comedy Central and I was laughing so hard that I was crying. It is absolutely funny from beginning to end. But since Comedy Central left out a lot of his jokes I just had to find his stand up on DVD. Kevin Hart's stand up is funny I got two copies, one for me and one for my best friend and her husband. I think his stand up is funnier than Kat Williams Pimpin' Pimpin'!

This stand up was hilarious from beginning to end. My abs were killing me by the end of the show. This is a definite must have.

I've never seen his stand up, well except a 30 min stand up he did, which was funny as hell. So I was going through my T.V. Guide and seen that this was coming on Comedy Central, I Tivo'd it and finally got around to watching it. Damn, Kevin Hart is hella funny. This is one of the best stand-ups I've seen, I really hope he does some more like this because it had me laughing the whole damn time. And to think I almost didn't check him out, what a mistake that would have been. Between him and Bill Burr they got the best stand up's I've seen from 08-09 so far with Katt Williams coming in 3rd. Definetly check this one out, you won't be sorry!!!!!!

Life (1999)

LifeYes, this movie has plenty of funny moments, but there is a very real and sometimes rather touching story that takes precedence over everything that happens. You can't get through the most serious of situations without the palliative of laughter now and again, and Life actually does tell a serious story. Eddie Murphy proves once again that he is a great actor, and Martin Lawrence was surprisingly good as the more serious of two men sentenced to life in prison for a murder they didn't commit. One night in 1932, fate brought Rayford Gibson (Murphy), a smooth-talking hustler with big dreams, and Claude Banks (Lawrence) a respectable fellow about to start a good job, together in a New York nightclub. For entirely different reasons, both guys have to face the displeasure of the club owner's wrath; and so it is that Gibson and Banks end up going on a bootlegging run to Mississippi. One dead man later, and both men are sentenced to life in prison for murder. Since Banks blames Gibson for getting him into all this mess, there relationship varies in quality as the years go by, but gradually a real friendship develops between them. They try to escape several times but end up spending basically their whole lives in prison. Along the way, we meet with several sub-plots involving some of their fellow inmates, but the movie never strays far from the lives of Gibson and Banks. The passage of time is marked by clips of historical events, and some excellent makeup works makes both men look old and worn out as they advance into their senior years.

This is not a prison story of hopelessness, however. While no pardon ever comes their way, justice has a way of willing out eventually, and the final ten minutes of the film are just terrific. Since the story does take place in Mississippi in 1932 and beyond, race plays a major part in the film, but it does not define the movie by any means. There are a number of funny scenes, especially those involving pie and cornbread, and Eddie Murphy will definitely make you laugh Martin Lawrence sort of plays the heavy here to Murphy's periodic antics. Some familiar faces pop up in the movie: Rick James plays the New York club owner, Bernie Mac has a relatively minor role, and Heavy D plays a small but important part. Wyclef Jean contributes an original score for the film. The whole cast is excellent, and a very good script keeps the film on pace and lively.

This isn't Stir Crazy; there are plenty of laughs, but I wouldn't call this a comedy Life the movie is funny in the way life itself can sometimes be laughter can get us through the hard times, but it doesn't hide the fact that the hard times are there. This movie really deserves more attention than it has received; with its serious underlying quality, it ranks among Eddie Murphy's most impressive films.

Definitely a wonderful movie, Life, brings to the screen the story of two New Yorkers, during Prohibition and the Great Depression, as they make their way to a small rural town in Mississippi, in order to stock up on some moonshine, which in turn is to be delivered to a NYC speakeasy.

The setting is the early 30's, specifically 1932, and it is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about how trust, friendship, endurance, and inner strength, can lead out of situations, which might seem bleak or desperate at first glance.

On the negative side, the only setback was the scene with the baby. They could have found another way to show the strong sense of solidarity that had developed.

Needless to say, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least!

The film combines drama and humor, making it one of the best of its kind, and one that can be watched over and over again.

Life is sure to provide for an evening's entertainment.

Both Murphy and Lawrence are quite fine in this warm and funny drama about a lifelong friendship behind the bars of a Southern prison camp during the depression. The make-up as they slowly age was deservedly Oscar-nommed. Both prove here they are fine actors as well as fine comedians. This is not an extraordinary work but it is quite competent and entertaining. Worth a watch.

This movie is perhaps Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence's Sistine Chapel. That is a bold statement but this movie is so funny and such a good, well made movie. There are endless funny moments in this movie. I might be being biased because I love timeline movies a lot (ex. FORREST GUMP). This movie will also make you cry from sadness and laughter. I laughed out loud many times and (ALMOST) cried from emotion.

The movie has an all-star cast as well which can sometimes be disastrous (ex.NOTHING BUT TROUBLE). It hits every angle possible and could not have been done any better for what it was. And that is one great, funny movie that is one of my all-time favorites.

This movie is one of the best films I've ever seen. It has its funny, even hilarious moments but it's not a comedy, by a longshot. It's one of the best, most heartwrenching dramas, and was all the more pleasant for being completely unexpected.

The plot concerns two men, who were framed for a crime they didn't commit, and their lives in jail after they are sent to prison for life. It does a wonderful job of subtly showing the racial tensions and interplays in the time period and also showing the changes that come about later on in the time and how it affects their lives in the prison.

Get this movie. You won't be disappointed.

Love and Other Disasters (2006)

Love and Other DisastersLove and Other Disasters is a film that very few people even know about. I happened to catch it, maybe 4 years ago as part of the Toronto International Film Fesival, when it was one of the movies showing that year. I saw it with two friends and we all enjoyed it very much! It's light...it's funny...it's cute...a great date movie...and has something for all adults, gay and straight alike (as it has a slight gay element) who like a good romantic comedy. After we saw it.... we never heard another thing about it. It never apparently found a distributor, and never was shown in theaters, to my knowledge. About three years later...it appeared on DVD. I have owned a copy since it came out on DVD and we had one of our "Movie nights" at our home with 8 or 9 friends over, and everyone enjoyed it a lot!

What amazes me in the movie business is all of the total garbage movies that get made and shown in theaters every week..... bad, awful, poorly made and poorly acted films that should never even be produced.... and then there are movies like "Love and Other Disaster" that are well-made, with good acting, and they never see the light of day.

It was such a shame when young and vivacious Brittany Murphy died in December 2009 at age 32, depriving the film world of her sunny countenance. Along with the biopic of rapper Eminem, 8 Mile -8 Mile (Widescreen Edition) -this was my favorite Brittany Murphy film.

A few words of disclosure are necessary about this film. "Love and Other Disasters" is a romantic comedy set in London. There is not one original idea in the script and just about every movie cliche to be found in romantic comedies is in this movie to wit:

-Murphy is a fashion designer with a mixed up love life.

-She befriends a gay photographer (who is actually not gay) that loves her.

-There are several other gay male characters in the film with mixed up love lives.

-In fact, all the characters in the film have a mixed up love life.

-All the actors are employed in the arts -once writes a screeplay called "Love and Other Disasters."

-The film appears to be heading to tragedy but has a wonderful, happy ending.

-The movie ends by having the action in the film made into a movie.

Having made these disclosures, I will say I adore this movie. This is such a warm film, so full of good spirits and love, that it transcends all these cliches to be not only good entertainment but a memorable film experience. The chemistry between Jacks (Murphy) and Paolo (Santiago Cabrera) is natural, unforced and credible. Almost all the actors are likeable, you root for them, and you want their love to succeed. And it does.

I can't think of a romantic comedy I've seen in recent years that I enjoy as much as this 2006 production. It's better than "Four Weddings And A Funeral" Four Weddings and a Funeral to which I think it compares very well. This is a sexy, delightful, easy on the eye and mind film that breezes through its 100 minutes and leaves you satisfied. If you're in the mood for mindless entertainment with a big warmth factor, this movie is for you.

Whatever your taste in good movies, you will like at least some parts, if not all, of this movie. Even if you find it hard to embrace this movie, you will find it even harder to dislike it.

At the risk of being controversial, I will rate this movie above multi-threaded ensemble movies like "Love Actually", "Crash", "Valentine's Day" and "New York, I Love You". The surprise is in a singular actress carrying the entire movie, supported by a cast of relatively unknown but competent actors.

As I am writing this review, James Taylor is coming on "live" at the Oscar presentation (this is Oscar night, 7th March in the USA) with Brittany Murphy being remembered on screeen, and her image reprised at the end of Taylor's solo "In My Life". We will never know if she would earn an Oscar one day, but from her performance in this movie, it is not possible to rule out her future potential. I have watched "Ramen Girl", "Uptown Girls" and the Futurama with Brittany's voice, and I went on a binge of Brittany Murphy's movies like "Little Black Book" after I got the news that no more movies would be made by this great actress. This movie was among the prominent ones recommended by Amazon when keying in the actress' name. The movie surprises at many levels.

From earlier reviews I gathered that the plot was going to less straightforward than "Ramen Girl" or "Uptown Girls". Without going into the story line, I like this movie because:

1. The acting was serious, focused and well directed. I cannot think of another actress who could have been better cast in the main role. The British accents all round were from good character thespians.

2. The cinematography was good. There were refreshing camera angles of contemporary London. The Houses of Parliament framed by the London Eye (across the river) was one such unexpected view.

3. The colours were bright. Like on picture post-cards. The indoor shots were unusually bright and colourful. No dim "Memoirs of a Geisha" artwork requiring Night Vision Goggles here. Brittany Murphy's fully nude body in a kitchen scene(strategically covered by a copy of "The Naked Chef") was boldly illuminated. Refreshing to see the details of English interior furnishing instead of the usual American home interiors.

4. For an adult movie, there was relatively little swearing. Then there is a sensible plot. It is fun, but does not sit well as a chick-flick. Nobody picks up a movie like this to feel depressed at the end. Best watched together with close friend(s): beer/alcohol optional, not a necessity. For morbid, pick up "Deadline" or "Dead Girl".

Brittany Murphy does a good "damsel in distress" with pleading doe-like eyes, as in "Ramen Girl". This appears be a recurring pattern in her movies. Well, if you are good at something, keep doing it Denzel Washington does a good "Don't lie to me", Tom Hanks replayed "stupid" in "You've Got Mail" and Julia Roberts does a good petulant temper tantrum in "Pretty Woman", "Pelican Brief", "Erin Brockovich" and so on. I thought that Brittany's waif-like begging was similarly getting to be one of her acting trade-marks.

I am glad to have experienced this movie.

An offbeat comedy treat that will entertain some viewers and annoy others. There are some enjoyable humorous scenes and some touching romantic moments but this movie is not for everyone.

Brittany Murphy's performance is pretty good, but Matthew Rhys seems to shine more brightly in this talented but quirky ensemble cast. The chemistry between Brittany and Santiago Cabrera, while leading to a predictable outcome, is endearing and at times downright funny.

Give this one a chance and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Love and Other Disasters is bursting with eye-candy, ear-candy, and heart-candy. The cinematography is gorgeous, the music is wonderfully charming and the story is cute. Fans of well-written/acted/produced films take note: this is one such gem.

The comedy works as well as the romance, and the characters poke fun at movie stereotypes as well as at themselves (the wacky smoker gal is hilarious) and the relationships are brightly played out in the 90 minute run-time. From start to finish I couldn't find anything wrong with this one!

There are 3 central characters, each trying to find love, each with lessons to learn. The gay roomate's story is especially touching.

In the film the characters watch "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and one states its her favorite film. That older film may be a classic, but I enjoyed this one much more.

5/5 stars! Funny, romantic film.

Stripes (Extended Cut) (1981)

StripesNope! It's NOT just the same movie simply put:

You haven't actually seen Bill Murray's 'STRIPES' until you obtain this 2005 re-release DVD!

The bonus scenes featured DOES INDEED answer various inquiries we once had re this comedy:

e.g. why are those 2 guys ALONE sitting against the EM-50 in Italy before they take it for a spin?....and when in Germany Russell flat-out refuses to rescue the captured troops with the other three in the EM-50, what made him change his mind? (to mention a few)..

Another one of the deleted scenes is the (talked-about) 7-minute "South America" segment

where we DO see another side of Harold Ramis while Murray is truly hilarious!

A BETTER print with superior STEREO 5.1 dolby sound now vs the previous mono DVD, including a great feature in two parts -"Stars & Stripes" that will leave you dazzled in understanding this entire film: how it was made, rare image stills, and how the actors (a good number of them)

felt in doing the film along with Murray himself, being interviewed from of all places TOKYO!

This new DVD gives you 2 movie options:

1.) the EXTENDED version featuring the deleted scenes-

(with added option of audio commentary from the director and head writer)

2.) the ORIGINAL theatrical version-

*BOTH WS*

There's also the option of seeing all SIX bonus scenes one after the other -

The EXTENDED version does a fine editing job inserting the deleted scenes at the right places,

even indicating (via small permanent text) where these bonus scenes START and END -

-an extremely smooth flow minus any pauses or audio dropouts...

However on this strange ORIGINAL version, there ARE crude pauses/slight audio drops only at the marks where the deleted scenes were MEANT to be placed (or were previously removed),

it's as if they didn't (wouldn't or couldn't) simply EMPLOY the main original print for this DVD -

-unsmooth/choppy at these marks, esp when the guys drive to Germany and meet the girls -

e.g. Murray hugs P.J. Soles with the line: "I Brought The Magic Suitcase"..

That very scene literally disappears thus disappoints on this ORG version -

One Major Blunder:

A bonus scene w/P.J. Soles (there's MORE of her) & Murray in a hotel bedroom from Germany

is in fact the EXACT same bedroom set in a PREVIOUS short scene where she pulls Bill out of the trunk at General Barnacy's house; When you compare the two you'll believe they intended this to be START of the 'Barnacy Bedroom' segment..

But overall (the pauses & blunder notwithstanding), they did a great job

in christening this DVD as: "The ULTIMATE Stripes"

definately worth forking over (at best) a Hamilton and an Abe for...

The mark of a great comedy is that it remains funny after numerous viewings. "Stripes" (the 1981 release that helped make Bill Murray a star) passes this litmus test with flying colors. Now at last there is a DVD release, replete with extras, worthy of this enduring comedy.

Ivan Reitman directed Murray, Harold Ramis (who has subsequently directed many comedies of his own) and a great supporting cast led by John Candy as new recruits in the U.S. Army.

The wonderful veteran actor Warren Oates, who died shortly after the film's release, is their tough-as-nails drill sergeant. The by-play between Murray and Oates (opposites don't always attract) is priceless.

Suffice it to say that hilarity ensues, with the improbable unit putting on a virtuoso performance at their graduation ceremony ("That's the fact Jack!) sans their injured sergeant. This leads to them being charged with the security of a new super weaponized mobile home (it's called an, "urban assault vehicle") in Europe. Improbable? Absolutely. Hilarious? Most definitely.

Murray and Ramis also each has a lovely MP to accompany him on the duo's escapades as the ribaldry doesn't stop until the closing credits.

You can watch the "Stripes" with deleted scenes included or without.

The obvious highlight of the DVD extras is an hour long documentary on the movie with all principles interviewed (at his insistence, Murray's interview is done in black light). It is one of the better retrospectives of its kind.

And "Stripes" is one of the best comedies of this or any other time.

Absolutely one of the funniest movies ever made. It would definitely have to be highly ranked, if only for the fact that it is possibly the most quoted movie of all time. Who among us has never said "Lighten up, Francis" or "You can't leave, all the plant are gonna die! ". Bill Murray is at his best, and Harold Ramis is the perfect straight man for him. Add in a supporting cast that includes John Candy, Judge Rheinhold, John Laroquette and Sean Young, and you have something pretty special. Also, gains points for the fact that it doesn't start to fade out at the end, like many comedies do when the decide to get "message-y". It just keeps up the energy and humor right up to (and including) the credits. To this day, the only movie I have ever enjoyed so much that I went right back to see it the very next night.

Read Best Reviews of Stripes (Extended Cut) (1981) Here

Stripes was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I'm happy to say that I still find it just as funny today. This extended cut adds several deleted scenes, some good, some not-so-good. My personal favorite is one where Harold Ramis' character reaches the breaking point and he and Murray go AWOL, hitching a ride on a cargo plane and parachuting into South America. This scene gives Harold Ramis a chance to shine, and is very funny, but during the commentary track it is mentioned that it was cut from the film (despite being a favorite of the studio execs) because it didn't seem to fit in the film from a pacing aspect (it is suggested it would've gone well over the end credits, but this was before such a thing was common).

Speaking of the commentary track, it isn't mentioned on the packaging, but it's there, and includes director Ivan Reitman and writer/producer Dan Goldberg. And apparently, the extended cut wasn't Reitman's idea -some of the deleted scenes he prefers to not have in the film. The DVD also includes a nice 2-part documentary which includes interviews with the cast.

A great film!

I'm a bit perplexed by the reviews criticizing this movie because of its unrealistic depiction of the Army. Do these same people complain that "Animal House" doesn't accurately display college life or that "Vacation" isn't what a family trip across the country is really like? (Hey, I live in St. Louis and could easily take exception to the outright offensive inaccuracies in "Vacation", but I still love the movie!) This is a comedy, folks. It's not "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers", and it never claims or tries to be. It uses exaggeration and absurdities to make us laugh. It isn't striving for realism, although to its credit, I have heard plenty of people say that this is the best movie they've ever seen at giving you the feel for what its like going into the service, and that their own drill instructor was identical to Sgt Hulka.

The first half of this movie is just about the funniest comedy ever made. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis are the perfect slobs with shiftless lives who try to maintain what's left of their dignity by enlisting in the Army. Their chemistry is wonderful and they truly are believable as out-of-shape but likable losers. Virtually every line and every character is memorable (Psycho, Ox, Cruiser, that lady in the cab, John Laroquette, and of course Russell and Winger), and this has to be the most quotable movie in history. No, John Candy would not have spoken to a superior officer that way when he gets off the bus (or at least not have gotten away with it), but that's what's so funny about it! And speaking of Sgt. Hulka, Warren Oates should have been given an Oscar nomination for this role. He's the high point of the movie for me, and his intense, over the top performance reminds me of Robert Shaw in "Jaws"some actors are so good that they can chew scenery and get away with it. So for the first half of the movie, there's not an unfunny moment. Maybe basic training isn't like this, but the scenes are so well-done that a generation of adolescent guys has grown up thinking that it is and have no doubt gone into the military with this movie in the back of their minds.

The second half of the movie sort of devolves into a bearable but not great action movie, with its contrived plot about the stolen military RV and the rescue mission across the Czech border. Still, the same characters are present and continue to sustain the movie until the end. Great music, tooI don't think this has ever been issued as a soundtrack but it contains one of the most memorable themes ever written for a movie.

The DVD itself is passableno extras, somewhat grainy video, unspectacular sound. But we surived watching it over and over again on basic cable with plenty of edits and subpar picture quality, so I can't complain too much. I suppose someday it will be given a "Special Edition" with a commentary and a retrospective from the stars, but the movie stands on its own without anything fancy.

Paris, je t'aime (2006)

Paris, je t'aimeParis is a city of light, lovers, art and beauty. And "Paris, Je T'aime" explores all the sides of the city in in eighteen brief fiolms, all set in various arrondissements of Paris, and directed by some brilliantly underrated directors. And they seem to be about love -often it's a person, but each one is also an ode to Paris itself.

A somewhat lonely Denver mailwoman (Margo Martindale) makes her first trip to Paris, and recounts how "I fell in love with Paris, and Paris fell in love with me." A mime spreads colour and mischief on his way to love. Two strangers fall in love in a bar. A medic learns that a dying man is in love with her, and seeking her out inadvertantly led to his death at the hands of a racist gang.

A young boy leaves his misogynistic pals behind, to seek love with a young Muslim girl. A pair of British people visit the tomb of Oscar Wilde in Pere-Lachaise, an American actress falls for her drug dealer, and a young nanny's dismal living conditions are a stark contrast to that of the people she works for. All these -and more -are intertwined gently in the finale.

But two stand out especially. Tom Tykwer's includes a young blind man (Melchior Beslon) receiving a call from his American actress girlfriend (Natalie Portman). She tells him, "Our spring was wonderful but summer is over now and we missed out on autumn... our love fell asleep, and the snow took it by surprise." In his sorrow, he thinks back to how they met, and how their relationship continued... and gets a surprise.

And Vincenzo Natali turns in a bloody, gothic love story. A young American tourist (Elijah Wood) is walking alone at night, when he steps in a pool of blood. He follows the blood to where a beautiful vampire (Olga Kurylenko) is slurping someone to death -only to have a sudden attraction bloom up between them. When he has a fall, what will happen?

"Paris Je T'aime" has it all -comedy, tragedy, romance, racial tension, religion, vampires, sunlit vacations, glamour and cliches. Okay, there's the occasional dud -"Tuileries," about an American tourist by the Coen Bros., is just lame. But since all the directors are given only about five minutes, most of them are tiny, polished gems without any extraneous material.

Natali's is colourless (except for blood) and eerie, Gurinder Chadha's is shyly sweet and sunny, Richard LaGravenese's is adorable, Craven's is syrupy, and Tykwer's is a delicate web of camera tricks and blurred glimpses. Sylvain Chomet even charms us with mimes zooming through the streets. And each brings another dimension of Paris to life, from lush green parks to bars to the Eiffel Tower itself.

And the acting is just as great -the great Juliette Binoche, Seydou Boro, Catalina Moreno, Marianne Faithfull, Fanny Ardant, Gérard Depardieu, and the adorable Melchior Beslon. Martindale deserves special praise for her sweetly realistic portrayal of an American tourist, and Portman is brilliantly vibrant as a girl who yells a lot. And Elijah Wood turns out a brilliant performance in total silence, managing to convey fear, mischief, eroticism and love.

"Paris Je T'aime" is a collection of little gems, with the occasional dull pebble thrown in -brilliant directors, emotionally charged stories, and great acting. Enchanté!

Directed by a slew of the very best directors (Alfonso Cuaron, The Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Alexander Payne to name a few), "Paris Je t'aime" is a mixed bag of short vignettes about the who's, the why's and the wherefore's of love set in the City of Love: Paris.

As is usually the case in this type of enterprise, the directors with the best scripts and the best technique and vision come off the best. The amazing thing is that producers Emmanuel Benbihy and Claudie Ossard have double-handedly breathed new life in what was thought of as a pretty much dead, at least in its commercial art form entity

...the short film, by assembling 18 films made by 21 directors.

In one of the best and most effective and affecting, "Bastille," a man (Sergio Castellito) on the verge of leaving his wife (Miranda Richardson) for his mistress learns that the wife is terminally ill and decides to stay with her. The main character's wall-to-wall stream-of-consciousness takes us through the whole story in voice-over: "by acting like I was in love, I fell in love with my wife again."

In "14ème Arrondissement," directed by Alexander Payne, a middle-aged American mail carrier from Denver, who diligently studied French as she prepared for the trip of a lifetime to Paris, walks around the city sharing her impressions in voice-over. She talks about her lonely life, the beautiful scenery, her happiness at being in Paris but her sadness at having to experience it alone. But, sitting in a Paris park one day she experiences a sudden epiphany: a life affirming and life changing epiphany that she will without a doubt take home with her to Denver.

Acting-wise, along with those mentioned above, Ben Gazzara, Gena Rowlands, Gaspard Ulliel, Juliette Binoche, Steve Buscemi, and Fanny Ardant...organic, deeply committed actors all make the very best of their short but sweet appearances.

Like its literary twin, the short story, the short film has very little time to make an impression and impact and though there are a couple of miss-steps presented here, "Paris Je T'aime" is as a whole a very beautiful, very cohesive, effective and blissfully thoughtful film.

Enchanté!

This is THE WORST Blu-Ray transfer I have seen yet, merely because there are only Subtitles for The Hard Of Hearing, which destroy the film.

The most glaring offense is the mime scene, which has subtitles!

Simply beautiful movie simply ruined.

Those with large-screen HDTVs have something of a dilemma here. The Blu-ray version is sharper and more beautiful to look at than the DVD, but it is marred by excessively large and intrusive subtitling for the hearing-impaired. Subtitling is a necessary evil for those of us who do not have a fluent understanding of French, but those of us with hearing do not need to have every sound effect explicated, nor English subtitles for those bits of this film that are spoken in English. Although the subtitling is larger than it needs to be, I would still recommend the Blu-ray version for those who are not bothered by what amounts to closed-captioning rather than standard subtitling. You're also in luck if you can read Spanish, for which standard subtitles are available.

My aggravation with the Blu-ray subtitling led me to do some research, including the reviews here at Amazon; and I found contradictory and ambiguous remarks regarding the subtitling available on the DVD, which is entirely understandable because the DVD itself is confusing in this regard. To resolve the matter, I rented a copy of the DVD; and the following are my findings, which I hope will clear this up for customers:

If you simply play the movie on DVD without going through subtitle setup, you will see normal English subtitles; however, if you go through setup, you will see only a choice between Spanish and English SDH (or "Off"); and if you choose English SDH, you are stuck with the extraneous and distracting information on screen. The main reason that I am writing this footnote of a review is to say that, in spite of the labeling on the package, and in spite of the explicit choices on the Setup Menu, there are--on the DVD only--*four* subtitle options; to access them you simply have to use the subtitle button on your remote control while the disc is playing. There you will find that you can choose "English," "Spanish," "English," or "Off." That's right: there are two labeled "English" without differentiation, except for one being numbered (on my player, anyway) #1, and the other #3. On my player #1 was English SDH; and #3 was standard English subtitles.

Please understand that I have nothing against providing English for the Hearing Impaired, and the DVD shows that this can be done without rattling the rest of us; I do not know what the constraints were on the Blu-ray that prevented this sensible approach, nor why First Look Pictures chose to hide the standard-English option on the DVD.

One of the things that was unclear to me in going through the reviews was whether or not one needed to buy the special 2-disc edition in order to get the standard English subtitles. Based upon the fact that my rental disc does not say Disc 1 on it, I assume that it is not from the 2-disc set; furthermore, some of the reviews here and elsewhere have indicated that Disc 1 of the 2-disc set is identical to the single-disc edition. I cannot speak for the Steelbook edition, but I would be surprised if the standard-English-subtitle feature had been removed, which I assume would have been extra effort for Steelbook. Thus, I believe that only the Blu-ray edition suffers from this particular flaw, leaving prospective buyers with the choice of a clearer but more cluttered image on Blu-ray, or a fuzzier but less distracting image on the DVD.

Oh, yes, the movie: I found this collection of short films charming, often whimsical, and sometimes wise; and the Paris scenery ain't bad, either. If I were reviewing the DVD, I would give it four stars, but have docked the Blu-ray a star for its clumsy production.

Cedar Rapids (2011)

Cedar RapidsCedar Rapids is a sweet, but never sappy, comedy from director Miguel Arteta, who specializes in small films, usually comedies, which are almost anti-Hollywood in the way they allow humor to come naturally from well-developed characters rather than contrived jokes. Like his previous efforts, The Good Girl and the underrated 2009 film Youth in Revolt, Arteta casts well-known actors against type and allows them to develop their characters while showing off previously unexplored sides of their acting range. Even with actors that are well-known to mainstream audiences, Cedar Rapids flew under the radar, quietly slipping in and out of theatres in early 2011 while mediocrity continued its reign at the box office.

Ed Helms plays Tim Lippe, an insurance agent for Brown Star Insurance in Brown Valley, Wisconsin. Tim is a simple and naïve, but good-hearted man, completely out of touch with the modern world. He is "pre-engaged" to his seventh-grade teacher Macy Vanderhei (Sigourney Weaver) and is oblivious to the world outside of Brown Valley. After a co-worker dies under mysterious circumstances, Tim's boss, Bill Krogstad (Stephen Root), sends him to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to represent the agency and claim the prestigious Two Diamonds Award. Upon his arrival, Tim befriends fellow insurance agents Ronald Wilkes (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and the hard-partying Dean Ziegler (John C. Reilly), while finding himself smitten with Joan (Anne Heche). Yielding both hilarious and heartfelt results, Tim is introduced to situations he never imagined he'd find in Brown Valley, Wisconsin.

Other familiar faces include Kurtwood Smith (as the ultra-religious president of the convention) and Rob Corddry (in a short, but amusing cameo). Probably the most light-hearted film Arteta has directed, some will still label it a "dark comedy" due to its willingness to disregard political correctness and develop characters truthfully. I've often thought of Arteta as "Alexander Payne-lite" as his distinct, off-beat style seems cut from the same stylistic cloth as the films of Alexander Payne. This similarity was never more apparent to me while watching Cedar Rapids and I was surprised to learn, when the credits rolled, that Payne and his frequent writing partner, Jim Taylor, are actually two of the film's producers. Arteta's direction and style lend a lot to the quality of the film, but that's not to diminish the influence of Phil Johnston's script, which made the 2009 Hollywood Blacklist of the best unproduced screenplays. The script is a marvel in the way it features strong, funny, and deeply human characters with only a so-so story to push them forward. There's nothing particularly bad about the script, it's just a fairly straight-forward story that reaches a fairly standard conclusion. This small criticism aside, it's still more touching and clever than any comedy I've seen this year.

One must give credit to the terrific cast for frequently elevating the quality of the material. Helms doesn't get the chance to expand his range very much with Tim, but he does offer another side of the introverted, passive, and awkward character he's made his name playing before. Whitlock Jr. almost steals the show with his performance as Ronald, possibly being the only actor (or person even) who can elicit a laugh from saying "The HBO series `The Wire.'" Heche does a nice turn with her role, as does Weaver, who brings more class and humor to her small role than most actresses would have. There is a lot of talent in front of the camera, but Reilly's performance alone is enough for me to recommend the film. Loud, rude and hilariously funny, Reilly brings enough comedic energy, heart, and colorful use of the English language to make a separate film.

Cedar Rapids is an intelligent, low-key film that quietly sneaks up on you and charms with an equal amount of heart and wit. It's much more satisfying and genuinely funny than a large percentage of Hollywood comedies being pushed into local cinemas each week and it boasts a terrific cast doing some fantastic, dynamic work. It fits more heart and humor into its 87-minute running time than most big comedies do with more than twice that.

GRADE: B+

I've been an Ed Helms fan for awhile and have wanted to see this for some time. I can say it does not disappoint. What a strong cast too with John C. Reilly and Anne Heche. Along with others that really bring it all together. I wouldn't call it a full out whacky silly movie. It's got this "indy" feel to it with just a great balance of comedy and things many can relate to. If you like those badly written mainstream comedies then this may not be for you but for those that like some "indy" in your movie then you can't go wrong.

It's offbeat and may not be for everyone but this is a well written movie with a great cast. I laughed all the way through and also thought it had a warmth that could have been missing from a comedy like this.

This movie is just... under-rated. I don't think it caused much buzz at the box office not necessarily a bad thing. I guess these off-kilter comedies that rely on 'sophisticated irony' (yeah, bet you never thought you'd see THOSE two words together) tend to be overlooked in favour of simplistic slapstick.

But hey, why am I bothering? Isn't it really worth a 1 star? I mean at first it feels like a b-grade comedy with desperate jokes that fall flat on their face, and kinda one-dimensional characters who either are stiff nerds or who just belch, fart and swear? Well, so it seems.

But with closer inspection, Cedar Rapids delivers the goods... and then some. Tim Lippe is one of this most hilarious send-ups of a social mal-adjust you'll ever see, and his on-screen chemistry with Dean Ziegler (John C Reilly) produces fireworks.

Yet, in a subtle, almost invisible way the film is actually quite moving. The characters are far deeper than they at first appear, and this film is a deep analysis of human understanding of right and wrong, with an uproariously funny main plot.

You're left with a brilliant movie that gets better with each watch, worth picking up.

This is a great movie that saw limited release, a little over 450 theaters.

You can read the summary of the film on other reviews or here in the Amazon description. I caught it on one of its last weekends at our local art theater. I was wonderfully surprised.

"Cedar Rapids" is full of solid acting performances, great laughs and has to go down as one of the more quotable movies of all time. There are those here who have given their 1-star reviews and that's fine. But it's disappointing to know that they weren't entertained by a movie that is this entertaining.

There seems to be a new breed of gentle, almost "indy" feel films these days: "Cedar Rapids" "Everything Must Go" "Whip It" "Win Win" "Juno." Most importantly, these films are about characters, and Tim Lippe, our hero in "Cedar Rapids", is a character you will care about.

Get the movie. You won't be disappointed.
