Trilogy of Life (The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights) (The Criterion Collection) (1

Trilogy of LifeIf you are planning to order these BDs, chances are you need no introduction to Pasolini's Trilogy of Life.(*1)

I first watched these films during my college years, and was immediately drawn to Pasolini's very unconventional film-making techniques.(*2) Thus, when these were up for sale last November from the redoubtable Criterion Collection, I preordered the blu-ray set. The "Criterion magic" does not disappoint, but.... If memory serves, there are more than 3 or 4 instances when vertical red straight lines appear prominently in the Canterbury Tales.(*3) So here is the puzzle: Why are they (still) there after the careful restoration?

I love Criterion Collection. Even though their products are more expensive, they are almost always worth the additional cost. In particular, these are great improvements from BFI's Region B (UK) blu-ray releases in terms of clarity, contrast, color scheme and especially naturality of the skin tone. So they are really currently the best transfer for these films. However, these vertical red lines are distracting, for me at least. I imagine one reason they are there (after the restoration) is that the current digital restoration technology is not advanced enough to remove these lines without compromising the entire frames. However, that theory doesn't seem convincing as Criterion Collection has in the past fixed tears and scratches more serious than these lines. An email inquiry to Criterion Collection did not produce a satisfactory answer. "The lines are in the source material" was all I was told.

If anyone has an answer, I'd be curious to know. In particular, if you happen to be or know one of the Criterion Collection's technicians in charge of the restoration, help us solve the puzzle!

Still very highly recommended, for the films and for the (otherwise excellent) transfer.(*4)

(*1) In case of doubt, please consult either Wikipedia or Criterion Collection's website.

(*2) For example, the editing is not at all smooth or tidy (but quite effective). Nudities and sex are treated in a "casual" and "naturalistic" way, devoid of the usual sentimental eroticism.

(*3) They are played on an Oppo BD player connected via a HDMI cable to an 50-inch HD TV. So I think the playback equipment is adequate.

(*4) Pasolini edited Canterbury Tales and Arabian Nights more than once and the "final" cuts are shorter than the "original" cuts presented in Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals. The Criterion Collection films are the final cuts, which Pasolini preferred. (These are also explained in the documentaries in the box.)

An excellent new print of Pasolini's 'Decameron', crystalline compared to the version available previously, but purchasers should know that the 40-minute documentary about the episode of Alibech and Rustico, eliminated by Pasolini from the final version of the film, does not contain any actual footage of the episode.

In a sentence: A cinematographic experience.

Pasolini takes you to beyond your imagination. Love the architecture and the spaces he creates. He approaches cinema as painting.

I have been looking for these films for a long time. I've only seen a poor quality VHS of THE DECAMERON that I found in my local public library. Criterion Collection has done a great job compiling this collection together! The quality is top-notich and the booklet that comes with it is very informative. Thanks!

I was so glad to get this series on Blu-ray. I could not believe that it was all three in a set together. We have these on VHS somewhere and we have not had a VCR in over a decade.

If you know about these movies, then you should buy them in Bluray format. Incredible find. If you do not know about the content of the films, I would look them up on IMDB first as they may not appeal to certain individuals.

Piranha 3DD (3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (2012)

Piranha 3DDThe recent remake of Piranha was nearly pitch-perfect. Gleefully hapless characters (portrayed with excellent B-movie abandon by the likes of Elisabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd, and even Richard Dreyfus) trotted through the cliche-riddled story and provided both laughs and inventive, over-the-top gore. It wasn't out to win any awards, but what it WAS out to do -amuse and disturb -it did quite well. So, of course, they had to make a sequel.

Unfortunately, they neglected to include half of the original formula. Truly excessive T&A? Check. Obvious character archetypes doing/saying obvious things? Check. Humor, either hokey, offensive, or smart? Check. Scares and grind-em-up deaths?

Not so much.

The problem here lies right in the set-up: an unapologetically awful man (played by David Koechner) opens a water park (with an adults only section) and contrives to fill it for free from a nearby lake. Three guesses how that plays out.

Yes. The piranhas infest the water park, and therein lies the problem. I don't know if you've ever been to a water park, but every one I've ever visited appeared to have been planned and designed by a blind man with permanent vertigo. This is usually in keeping with the looping, curving, twisting paths of the various water slides and lazy rivers, and it means it's not that hard to get turned around if the park is big. The point being: filming in one must be hell.

There is never any real sense of place to the film, and the park is never given a wide enough shot to really show the scale of the disaster. At the same time, the very fact that people are inches away from simply hopping out of the water reduces both the scale, spectacle, and believability of any of the chaos. There's a ten or fifteen minute scene of people thrashing about in water that is two feet wide and three feet deep. Gone is even any attempt at terror or (failing that) anything close to the stomach-churning destruction found in the first film.

The movie tries to make up for this in other ways. There are a couple of piranha attacks outside of the park, one of which is so over-the-top ludicrous that it is almost annoying. I won't give away any details, but I will say that it's one step away from characters shooting live piranhas out of shotguns like some kind of Itchy and Scratchy cartoon. But that's probably the point. While the first film was an aggressive and ham-fisted satire of Swarm Horror, this movie seeks only to be a cartoon of it. It's not really the same thing, and so this film -if you'll pardon the pun -very much lacks the bite that made the first one such a success.

As a live action cartoon, though, it's not bad. David Hasselhoff does a great job of making fun of himself AND the film. ("Stupid ginger boy," he complains when he hears the screams of a kid who's getting eaten. "Why did you get back in the water?") He's one of the better parts of the film, although he is also overused. Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, and Christopher Lloyd, on the other hand, are woefully underused. They brighten up their brief blips in the film, but all of them feel like they were added to the script at the last minute. There are some puns and gags that work, and some that don't.

It feels half done, is the point, and this is even evident in the run time. IMDB will tell you it's 83 minutes long, but that's counting the very slow credits crawl at the end. Perhaps knowing the deficit in their film, the makers put outtakes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel over half of these end credits. It's kind of like a nice, advanced special features addition, and I enjoyed it for what it was, but I also saw it for what it was meant to be: a quick, easy distraction from the fact that the film was more entertaining behind the scenes than in front of it.

Fun for what it is, but not as fun as it wants to be or should live up to. You might enjoy yourself if you have low expectations, or you might just have more fun watching Skinemax and putting some fish in a blender.

This movie cracked me up! If you've seen and enjoyed the first one, then you know exactly what you're getting with 3DD! It's a throw back to all the old exploitation films. Is it going to win an Oscar? Nope! Is there plenty of attractive, naked women, laughs and lots of blood? You bet! And isn't that why you're watching this movie in the first place?

You will have to know before you watch this movie that this movie is far from being serious. I actually watched this movie because the first one made me laugh more then cringe. I was amused but overall not as good as the first. If you are into just naked women with big you know whats you will get entertained. Thats why I was, but to expect an actual cool storyline then you will be let down.

Try as I might, I couldn't find a 3DD showing of this film, but did find it locally in just plain old 3D (which by the way, stinks). The movie is a sequel to the fun Piranha 3D from 2010 which I thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't Oscar worthy but it was acted well, had some scary moments, plenty of over-the-toplessness and was pretty funny. Not to be confused with filet mignon, it was still a darn good cheeseburger.

3DD opens with grad student Maddy (Danielle Panabaker, "The Crazies") arguing with her now widowed step-father (David Koechner, who seemingly tries to play his role dramatically) about the future of their inherited water park. Mandy, a 49% owner wants it to continue to be family friendly. Chet (Koechner) has the great idea to make it an adult strip club located within the water park. Chet wins the battle.

The film is set in the progressive state of Arizona so we are easily convinced that it was no problem getting approval for families with young kids to come in the same gates as horny voyeurs. Not to worry however as there is a fence that apparently separates the family friendly environment from full frontal nudity and pole dancing. The 48" rule applies. That's how tall you must be to see over the fence and the pre-adolescent boys take advantage. Those boys also have an advantage over the audience however as director John Gulager only lingers a couple nano-seconds when it comes to bare skin before moving on to the next shot. Hey, the movie's only 82 minutes. Gotta hurry.

But, this is a movie about deadly fish right? This particular water park would seem to be isolated from the now abandon lake nearby where all the piranha did their dirty work. Thanks to good old Chet who had sunk a deep water well near the park (where's that regulation Arizona?), the still viable fish eggs have their chance to hatch...and of course they do (thanks to Gary Busey). The well gives the quick growing meat eaters direct entry to the fresh water pools.

Piranha 3DD also teaches us a lesson about anatomy. I didn't know that a small fish could enter a woman's naughty parts (in this case, nubile virgin Katrina Bowden), then grow a bit with nothing more than the woman having a stomach ache. But wait. Shelby the virgin (Bowden) decides that it must be time for her to abandon her "V" status with her boyfriend. He of course is game but gets a climax he wasn't expecting! I know this all sounds fun but it actually is very boring and uneven. 3DD is missing all those things its predecessor had going for it.

I dont think people understand that movies such as this are made to be bad and cheezy which is what makes it so good. I MEAN THEY BROUGHT THE HOFF INTO IT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! AT A WATERPARK! TO BE A LIFE GAURD! I know a lot of people are being so critical because they want to be a critic or whatever. But just know what the people who created the movie were shooting for as an overall product before criticizing. It is a great movie for what they were looking to accomplish. With all that being said, if your looking for a movie that is serious with great acting and an awesome plot and likely to win an academy award, this movie is not for you. If you are someone looking for a good laugh, like movies intentionally made to be cheezy, its a goldmine. All the "Critics" are just too opinionated.

Fantasy 3-Pack (Nim's Island / The Princess Bride / Big) (2009)

Fantasy 3-PackI never thought I'd see these movies put together in one bundle. Hmmm.

The Princess Bride is undoubtedly a classic. It's full of humor, adventure, catchy lines, and lovable characters. A must see for all ages.

Big has been a favorite of mine for years. Tom Hanks does a great job acting in this movie(he's supposed to be a boy who is granted his wish and has grown up over night). Big is a lot of fun and sweet.

Nim's Island is different. I enjoyed this movie, but it's not an absolute favorite by any means. It's a decent kids movie and has a bunch of excitement thrown in throughout. The style of the movie and plot kind of threw me off (while at the same time most of it was predictable) and the imaginary character and other events had me rolling my eyes sometimes, but it's worth watching a couple times... maybe.

An absolute classic, thrown in with an old favorite, plus a kid's adventurous tale.

I don't know who came up with this odd combo, but I think it's worth buying.

I picked this up due to the price. It was cheaper to buy the set than "Big" and "The Princess Bride" individually. I just consider "Nim's Island" as a bonus. I picked this set up when it was 34.99 around the holidays.

They give you two movies you love/like and one you know you'd NEVER buy. It's their marketing plan. Of course everyone loves the favorite's Big and The Princess Bride but who's ever heard of Nim's Island? EXACTLY! They want you to get all 3 thinking it's a deal when it's really a scam.

Jawbreaker (1999)

JawbreakerOccasionally some brilliant movie makers slip in without fanfare what should become a classic in a genre critics love to hate. Critics probably didn't even have to watch this to decide to trash it, but if so they missed a real gem! Rose McGowan is a most tauntingly intirguing villain in a role she was born to play. And Rebecca Gayheart really shines as a major supporting character. Too bad she's so entrenched in TV acting and hence movies are mostly robbed of a wonderful talent. Were it not for the Academy's bias against this kind of movie, those two could have been shoo-ins for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Get yourself a video of this, avoid an excessively creepy night, don't eat to much, hold on to your chair and prepare to be thrilled!

This movie rocks!! So entertaining! best quote:

Most might look at this film and see it as a total bomb, but I see it as sinfully delightful in it's badness! It has a style and attitude all it's own within the overbearing genre aimed at teenage/20-somethings.

Quick Synopsis: The coolest girls in school, ruled by Courtney (the Queen Bee) decide to play a harmless prank on one of their girlfriends, Liz, for her birthday. Sadly, the prank turned tragic when it resulted in Liz's death -an occurence that was accidentally witnessed by the nerdiest girl in school, Fern Mayo. Now Courtney and company must strike a deal with Fern (they give her a makeover and help her become beautiful and popular...like them) in order to keep her quiet.

This film has a dark comedy quality to it, much like the movie Heathers (THX Version) did. The characters have an odd and quirky manner of speaking, and it makes the dialogue somewhat broken and fascinating at the same time. Rose McGowan shines as the 'Satan-in-heels' Courtney Shayne. The wardrobe and filming sequences are captivating (as usual with teen flicks, there are plenty of slow motion hot chicks strutting down the school hallways). The music fits perfectly with each scene, and compliments the edgy attitude of the movie.

Still...one can't help but notice that this movie is certainly not Oscar material. It's appeal is to a very general, young (I'd say about 15-25 age range) female audience. Men might be entertained briefly by it's gorgeous leading ladies in revealing clothing (honesly though, what high schoolers actually dress that way?), but their interest might quickly fade as the thin plot and bizarre story starts to unfold.

I have to say that I love this movie. It's fun and twisted at the same time, and even though it's never going to rank high on many "must see" movie lists, it will always have a place on mine.

Bottom line, watch it and enjoy it for the somewhat unique film it is...even if you end up thinking it was kind of bad.

Jawbreaker is a film about teen angst, popularity, deception and manipulation. It is utterly horrifying in that it portrays the desperation of the popular to stay popular and the need of the outcasts to enter their fashionable ranks. But is their delicious perfection all that it seems? How far are they willing to go to stay on top? And what happens when one of those so-called outcasts has to be grudgingly groomed to become one of them -because she knows that they are covering up the (accidental) murder of a friend?

Jawbreaker is a joyride of a bitchy, biting comedy that will strike a note with everyone who ever attended high school -no matter what group you found yourself in!

Don't miss Jawbreaker! I'ts an absolute delight!

I watched this at my friend's house and it was hilarious. Not only were the girls extremely hot, but the story was hilarious.

Courtney in particular was cool. My brother says I'd be her if I was a girl. But, since I'm not, I'll settle with marrying her. I feel bad for Julie though. Her life took a bad turn, but so does Courtney's at the end. I like the ending of the movie, it was good.

Even Marcy turns away from Courtney in the end. Too bad for Courtney. When she's talking to Vylette at one point on the phone, she says "Courtney Shane is priority number 1". That was hilarious.

No clue who that band is at the prom, but their music is cool.

All in all, good movie. Don't watch if you're offended by sex, cussing, smoking, drinking, or teenage infatuation, though. For everyone else, GET IT!

Project X (1987)

Project XOne day my mother came home with a film she showed her kids in school that day. I was either 4 or 5 years old. The film was "Project X", a heart warming, no so far fetched idea, melodrama starring Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt not to mention the extremely cute and hairy chimps.

The film is about an air force pilot who is transfred to an "Experimental Pilot Preformance Project" conducted by a strict doctor. From there he meets Virgil, an extremely smart and loving chimp who ended up there by mistake. He falls for the chimp like anyone else would and tries to save him with the help of the researcher who taught and cared for Virgil in the begining.

I found this film by mistake and quickly bought it. It's only special feature is the theatrical trailer and TV Spots but the film itself is well worth the ten bucks. The film has some very emotional scenes and some harrowing. Some of the scenes were honestly hard to watch. Being an animal lover one can only imagine how bad these kinds of experiments got. However, like all family films, this one has a great and happy ending.

This is simply a great movie that kids will love as well as adults. I'm 21 and I just love it!

I saw this movie when it first came out and have always wanted it. I could not believe I found it here at Amazon at such a great low price. This movie is so funny and yet so sad. It is the best movie I have ever seen. You have to see it. It is so sad to know that this kind of testing was actually performed on chimps by the US Airforce. This movie really makes you think. It gives you a sense of respect and love for these animals. (I was rooting for the chimps all the way.)

Buy Project X (1987) Now

PROJECT X is really a movie fairy tale for adults. It is billed as a comedy, and there are truly some humorous moments, but the basic thrust of the film is to transport the audience to a world of a deep and dark forest populated and run by evil witches and warlocks. The dark forest is a United States Air Force research test center and the resident warlock is a heartless and slimy researcher whose only stated purpose is to expose chimpanzees to lethal doses of radiation. Enter Matthew Broderick as a young and innocent air force recruit whose job is to bond with these chimps and basically and unwittingly get them ready for their lethal exposures. Broderick is young and boyishly goodlooking, but he is not the star. The one who steals more than a few scenes is Virgil the chimp. Virgil learns to trust Broderick, who in turn learns that the horrors of the dark forest are masked by the antiseptic environment that kills chimps in the name of science.

Director Jonathan Kaplan clearly tries hard to infuse PROJECT X with more than just the comic interaction between a chimp that is as at least as bright as his handler. Kaplan sets up the relation between Broderick and Virgil as a dramatic focus that zeros in on the rationale that the air force doctor slimily insists is the case: namely that if and when American pilots are exposed to killing radiation during a bombing run--perhaps to Russia--then how well will they be able to continue their mission? To Kaplan's credit, he has Broderick point out that unlike their simian counterparts in a flight simulator, a human pilot will certainly know if he has been exposed, and it is this knowledge that renders the entire PROJECT X experiment rationale as unneeded at best and evil at worst. Broderick is forced to juggle duty versus conscience, never an easy task at any time. By the film's midpoint Helen Hunt enters as a simian sign language teacher who, years earlier, had taught Virgil to communicate in contextually meaningful ways, thus intensifying Broderick's dilemma about the potential destruction of a sentient being that is not only cute but smart. It is this smartness that director Kaplan uses to ease the film into the slapstick world of farce. Not only is Virgil bright enough to help Broderick defuse a melt down in a lab experiment gone haywire, but he is also savvy enough to take an airplane up and pilot it in an escape.

PROJECT X is that odd but pleasant comedy/fantasy that brings the audience into the dark world of science to force the hero and the audience to wonder where duty ends and conscience begins. PROJECT X implies that a useful starting point is to define just what it means to be human--or in Virgil's case--near human.

I am giving the movie 4 stars because It is one of the movies I remember from my childhood that really left an impact on my views about animals and humanity. As a child, soaking in every little bit of this movie really made me feel a lot more attached to animals and more intuitive to the fact that every creature on this earth has feelings and emotions, regardless of if they can't express them like humans do.

Project X is one of the few movies that I also can't get myself to watch again to this day. It always makes me cry. I just get so overwhelmed with emotions over the chimps and the testing. It's all so sad.

James Horner is my musical epitome of a soundtrack God! I will admit though that you can identify his scores immediately because they are all very similar, but they ALWAYS evoke such strong, powerfully moving feelings during the films and it really works here with Project X.

This is a movie that has a nice, happy ending..but there is sadness to get to it, and it makes me all mushy and emotional just thinking of it!

Just had to put some thoughts about this movie up out of boredom!

Great childhood memories film. Reminds me of being a kid in the 80's.

This movie is a poignant reminder to me of how cruel and how kind the human race can be to other animals. I know it is mostly a fictional story, but I still root for the escape of the chimps, even for grumpy Goliath. Jimmy was being manipulated, same as the subjects of the "experiment" and he comes to realize he has to stand up for himself. He won't just be the wise-cracking card player anymore.

Tommy Boy / Black Sheep (Two-Pack)

Tommy Boy / Black SheepTommy Boy and Black Sheep were two of the best movies of Chris Farley, and now they are sold together for a great price! One side of the DVD is Tommy Boy and the other is Black Sheep, so you have to be careful to not touch the DVD. It has many deleted scenes and outtakes that are hilarious. Good for the Chris Farley fan or anyone who liked either one of these movies.

If you like Chris Farley and his physical brand of humor, these two are for you. We have falling down mountains, getting stuck in airplane doors, getting stuck in trunks lids, being crushed by refrigerators and slamming fingers in a car hood. . . how much better does it get than that! And that's just a few of the "gags". I'm a fairly educated guy and I certainly like cerebral humor but you just cannot watch Farley when he is "on" and not laugh.

I know there are better duo's but to me David Spade and Chris Farley are my favorite next to Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Tommy boy is such a classic of a movie. It has a great feel through the whole movie and it WILL keep you laughing. Black Sheep is a bit wackier then Tommy Boy and lacks that good feeling, however, the guys still deliver and its hilarious. I was hoping for remastered but it seems both of these were just up-scales of the original. But if you enjoy these movies you should get them on blu ray its always nice to watch something you enjoy in a better quality i suppose. It has great special features for Tommy Boy.
