Anger Management (2003)

Anger ManagementLighten up, fellow reviewers! ANGER MANAGEMENT is lighthearted comedy--not neurosurgery. I had zero expectations going into this movie, but as soon as the hilarious plane scene unfolded I found myself watching with an ear-to-ear grin on my mug.

I've seen Adam Sandler in numerous movies (and hated most of them), but as humble, wishy-washy Dave Buznik, Sandler is at his low-key best. Buznik is the last person to have an anger management problem, but following a fateful series of miscues (and hysterically funny miscues at that) he is ordered by a judge to attend an anger management course. And this is not just any old course: This is a course led by the unorthodox and dysfunctional Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson's inherent creepiness is perfect for this role). Nicholson and Sandler play off one another in grand fashion; the goofy therapist pushing the mild-mannered Buznik to the edge--and beyond--is mucho fun to watch!

An added delight to this campy comedy is the plethora of camoes, including John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson (also hysterically funny), Rudy Giuliani, and New York Yankee greats (and ex-greats) Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens. ANGER MANAGEMENT is pure fun, complete with milquetoast ending and wacky Nicholson facial expressions. Enjoy!

--D. Mikels, Author, THE RECKONING

With that frazzled hair, that just-swallowed-the-canary grin, and that sly, mischievous, devil-may-care gleam in his eye, Jack Nicholson does the controlled-mania shtick better than anyone working in movies today. But even his presence isn't enough to prevent "Anger Management" from emerging as a decidedly unfunny comedy, one that ends up wasting the talents of Adam Sandler, Marisa Tomei, John Turturro, Woody Harrelson and Luis Guzman as well.

The David Dorfman screenplay is yet another of those "high concept" package deals replete with contrived plots and big-name movie stars in the leads that look irresistible to all those corporate green-lighters at the studio, but which fall to pieces the moment they come to fruition on the big screen. Sandler plays a mild-mannered, put-upon schnook who is unfairly and inexplicably convicted of assaulting a stewardess on an airplane. Much to Sandler's chagrin, the court consigns him to the care of Nicholson, a well-known anger management specialist who is more certifiably psychotic than the patients he is ostensibly helping. The strained, manufactured plot is little more than an excuse to give Nicholson a chance to chew the scenery and Sandler to act bemused, befuddled and benumbed. Unfortunately, that's pretty much how the audience feels after 106 minutes of nonstop crudity, predictability and over-the-top ranting. Director Peter Segal tries desperately to make the whole enterprise come across as madcap, witty and anarchic, but with virtually every single joke and set-up fizzling and sputtering out, the film ends up feeling merely chaotic and desperate.

The filmmakers have peppered their movie with any number of cameo appearances by some famous real life New Yorkers, but their performances are so thoroughly inept and wretched that "Anger Management" begins to feel more like amateur night at the Roxy than a multimillion-dollar Hollywood production. This is most acutely felt in the painfully awkward and embarrassingly mawkish climactic moments played out, stereotypically, before a packed house at Yankee Stadium (didn't we see this scene a few years back in "Never Been Kissed"?). Moreover, the "surprise" ending requires that we suspend disbelief more than is advisable even for a film of this nature, which could never expect us to believe for a fleeting moment anything that is going on here.

In what is a bizarre fluke of fate, I suppose, "Anger Management" turns out to be the second film in recent months to feature characters massacring and mangling the Bernstein and Sondheim song "I Feel Pretty" from "West Side Story." What I said about this phenomenon in my review of "Analyze That" holds true here as well: that filmmakers with a dubious movie on their hands should avoid reminding us of a much better film while we are being asked to suffer through theirs. It only makes the experience that much more painful.

Possible Spoilers Ahead:

I have to admit that I am not a big Adam Sandler fan. However, I saw the trailers and I was intrigued by the thought of Sandler playing a regular guy to an over-the-top Jack Nicholson. About halfway through the movie, I had trouble following the storyline. I think this was due to Sandler playing his mild mannered Dave Buznik character too calm in the beginning. While I understand the concept of a guy who internalizes his anger (which is why he was a candidate for Anger Management classes), even guys who internalize their anger show some frustration when there are problems. I thought Buznik's overly calm reactions seemed unrealistic during the entire flight attendant hostility `over the headset' episode. I suppose Sandler was trying to go for no reactions at first and building up, over the course of the movie, to more obvious displays of anger (like the fight with his grade school nemesis turned Buddhist monk), but he started out so overly calm at the beginning, it was hard for me to understand whether he was acting or not. While the West Side Story 'I Feel Pretty' bit had some amusing possibilities, the Buznik character started well (frazzled at being forced to stop on the bridge and sing for his bizarre therapist), but the singing soon became too much like Sandler doing his singing bits for SNL, and not Buznik trying to placate his therapist so he could get to work. This may explain why some of the other reviewers gave this movie a thumbs down. I did find the second half more entertaining, mainly because I thought the Buznik character seemed to be reacting in a more realistic fashion to hostility directed at him. I didn't mind the final scene at Yankee Stadium, but I didn't think the cameos from the baseball players were required. While it was nice to see Rudy Giullani, that part could have also gone to someone playing just a regular guy in the stands rooting for the guy to propose to the girl at these sporting events (I didn't think all of the cameos were required or added anymore laughs to the film).

Overall, this movie has some entertainment value (good as a rental), better for the die-hard Adam Sandler fans.

Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler star as the creepy anger-management therapist and the mild-mannered participant in his class by court order, respectively.

An interesting premise and supremely talented leads lead one to think that this might be a great, biting comedy. Instead, it simply degenerates into a standard, predictable romantic comedy with bland jokes, including the inhumanly severe wedgies.

The last third of the film is so unbelievably overwraught and unconvincing that it's woeful. If you can't tell what's coming, boy I think you ought to see more than one movie a year. The final act is a totally by the numbers, autopilot affair. Crowd-pleasing? Sure. It's amazing how audiences will flock to a movie that pushes the same buttons in the same order. I'm sorry, when a movie follows this formula so rigidly, I feel offended

A frustrating mess of wasted talent and wasted potential that could have been saved with a decent number of legitimate laughs if not with a screenplay that had exhibited the wit and originality of the Hollywood pitch.

The story is just ok until the plot twist is revealed which is the most contrived and unbelievable. It is almost as if the final plot surprise was written after the movie was screened.

The con-game surprise ending really wipes out an already poor excuse for comedy.

Father Hood & Life With Mikey - Blu-ray Double Feature (1993)

Father Hood & Life With Mikey - Blu-ray Double FeatureThis two-fer blu-ray from Mill Creek is two family flims.

Father Hood starring the late Patrick Swayze (Road House,Ghost) is PG-13, so I might not be suitable for younger viewers.

Halle Berry (Monsters Ball) , and Michael Ironside (Scanners) co-star.

Life With Mikey starring Michael J Fox (Back To The Future Trilogy/Spin City) is PG.

singer Cyndi Lauper, Nathan Lane (The Birdcage), and David Huddleston (Blazing Saddles/The Big Lebowski) co-star

Me and my nephews enjoyed both of the films.

The PQ and AQ on both of these look great IMO, both are in anamorphic widescreen.

There are no special features on the discs, just the films, but still this disc is a great bargain for the price!

Great job Mill Creek!

Got the movies for the memories of seeing them when I was younger.

Both were not bad. Patrick Swayze did a great job.

Love Is All You Need (2013)

Love Is All You NeedChick Flick Alert! "Den skaldede frisør" (English captions) is a Danish film about a hairdresser who has been fighting breast cancer. After a partial mastectomy and chemo, she gets the all-clear, but comes home only to discover her husband having a fling with a co-worker. Problem is, next week they are flying from Denmark to Italy for their daughter's wedding. Of course Dean Martin's "That's Amore" underscores the opening credits.

Writer Suzanne Bier ("After the Wedding" terrific by the way!) directed this award-winning romance that features:

* Trine Dyrholm ("The Royal Affair") is Ida, the bald hairdresser (nice wig though) who has to confront one serious upset after another. She's the mother of the bride.

* Pierce Brosnan ("The Ghost Writer") is Philip, a highly successful international trader of fresh fruits and vegetables. It's his Italian villa where the wedding party convenes. He's the widowed father of the groom.

* Sebastian Jessen ("Almost Perfect") is Patrick, the groom...but he's starting to wonder....

* Molly Blixt Egelind ("Rebounce") is Astrid, the bride. The groom's wondering is making her start to wonder...

* Paprika Steen ("Keep the Lights On") is Benedikte, the worst sister-in-law EVER!

Things get off to a bad start when the mother of the bride backs her car into the father of the groom's car at the airport in Copenhagen. Then they are on the same flight but HER luggage gets lost. Finally, her wandering husband brings along his new sweetheart to Italy because she missed her flight back to Denmark. (She introduces herself as his "fiancée.")

I'll bet you have it all figured out, don't you? Well, you don't. I love it when things become unpredictable, and they do! Expect no sweaty bodies, gunshots, vehicular mayhem or blowie uppie stuff. In fact the biggest villain is that philandering husband.

BTW, Brosnan just gets more appealing as the years go by. He's far better now than when he was 'Bond'ing with the world. Yum! Amazon will notify me when the DVD is available.

and it's a 3/12 star charmer. Won't repeat details, thanks to the Jay B Lane review. Just want to add that the scenery (Sorrento, Italy) is gorgeous! Saw it on a cold, gloomy day in June, and it was a day brightener. The mix of Danish and English languages seemed very natural to me. The actors stirred the pot of emotions nicely, and oh, that sister-in-law! The movie had lots of little "moments," and the kinds of relationship messes that humans tend to create for themselves. Glad I went to Sorrento with Pierce and the gang.

I saw this movie at a screening and was able to speak with Pierce and Trine. It is a delightful story with one of the bravest performances I have ever witnessed from Trine Dyrholm. Yes, it's quiet and simple but it's ever so honest and beautiful. I have deep affection for both Denmark and Italy so this was a love letter for me, personally.

FYI: Trine shaved her head for this so the scenes of her hair regrowth would be real. There is an even braver choice she made in this film. Trine is truly wonderful and I will be looking for any work that she does in the future. The rest of the cast was spot on and that adds up to brilliant direction by Susanne Bier.

I am so thrilled to have found the DVD for sale.

How odd that this film is only available with Italian subtitles this summer-- even in Denmark (Susanne Bier's film)?? We have seen it at festivals with English subtitles and it was released months ago in Canada and Europe--why will it not be available until fall except with Italian subtitles????

Want Love Is All You Need (2013) Discount?

This Italian-issued DVD is useless for English-speaking viewers. Much of the film is in Danish and Italian, and there are no English subtitles for these sequences. The only subtitles there are in Italian, and they are forced (unremovable), so the entire film is visually marred. A very unpleasant, disappointing experience--why don't sellers inform us up front about these shortcomings?

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2010)

The Disappearance of Haruhi SuzumiyaThe disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is based on the light novel by Nagaru Tanigawa. *note, I have seen it, and will try not release spoilers on this post* This is a continuation of the Haruhi series. Clocking in at almost 3 hours long, it is one of the longest anime movies Ive seen. This takes place around the middle of December where Haruhi is planning a Christmas party for the SOS Brigade.

About a day later (end of the prologue) Kyon wakes up and finds out that everyone except him, has forgotten Haruhi even existed. It is a world where Haruhi never existed. He has no idea what caused it, or what he's suppose to do to fix everything. Yuki, who in this is a scared timid girl, who smiles when happy, and even cries. A certain character makes a return appearance. A person other than Haruhi also goes missing. And everyone thinks Kyon is crazy when he lashes out about Haruhi.

It is truly an excellent film, and was HIGHLY rated among anime communities. Note that to understand alot of this movie you have to have seen seasons one and two, lest you be lost in the multiple references to earlier episodes. Personally I bought the movie with English subs, and watch it multiple times. I cant wait for this release (disregard this statement after its release).

This movie keeps your attention throughout the whole thing, and when you think its over, your only half-way through, with a very satisfying end. This movie delivers exactly what Haruhiists have been hoping for since its announcement.

I realize that there are many other Amazon reviews for "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya," so I'll be brief:

THE FILM:

I enjoyed watching this high-end production of one of the most interesting story arcs in the "Haruhi Suzumiya" light novel series. The movie is slow-moving at first, but it really picks up half-way through. The animation, story adaptation, music, and character development are top-notch, and Kyoto Animation obviously put a lot of effort into the making of this film. It seems that this was their "love letter" to the fans of the Haruhi Suzumiya series (and, perhaps it can be seen as an "apology note" for making many people frustrated over the infamous "Endless Eight" episodes). However, if you're a newcomer to the series, it would be best to watch the TV series beforehand (or read the manga or light novels, if you prefer). Unfortunately, this film isn't very accessible to newcomers, and it's almost required that you recall and understand certain events from the series in order to fully enjoy the story. If you're new to the series or if you're a fan who needs a little refresher on the plot, the most important episodes to look over are "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (Parts 1 through 6) and "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody." Although a bit slow paced and lacking accessibility to new fans, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. {Film Rating: 4.5 out of 5}

Bandai's DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack Release:

As for Bandai's release, the voice-acting for the English dub is excellent, and once again, Crispin Freeman's performance as the brooding protagonist, Kyon, steals the spotlight. The picture quality of the Blu-Ray looks great on a big High-Definition Television. There's a fair amount of extras included on an extra DVD disc, although I wish they also included the extras together on the Blu-Ray disc. The packaging feels a bit "bare-boned"---for one of Bandai's most highly anticipated releases of the year, I wish they put a bit more effort into making the packaging feel a bit more special and attractive. Overall, this is another high-quality release by Bandai, but I wish they put more effort into the packaging to showcase this special movie. {Bandai's Release Rating: 4 out of 5}

BOTTOM LINE:

If you're a fan of the series, save up your pennies and buy this. If you're a newcomer who's interested in getting into the series, go and watch the TV series first. You'll certainly not be disappointed about this purchase.

Kyon wakes up one day to find his whole world has changed. None of his friends recognize him, not even the unflappable NAGATO Yuki. What's more, Haruhi is no where to be found. So starts a clever twisting, turning story in the Haruhi Suzumiya universe. And it is one of the best. If you are a fan of the original television series, this show is an absolute must. But even if you aren't, or have never seen anything Haruhi related, this film can stand alone and is a joy to watch. The art is crisp, the story-telling is compelling, the drama with all the twists and loopholes is engrossing, and you get the chance to see Yuki with a more rounded personality! Sadly, to say much more about the story would give too much away. Suffice to say, Nagaru Tanigawa somehow keeps his overlapping stories straight, no matter how many times Kyon time travels.

Among the stories that Nagaru Tanigawa has penned in the Haruhi series, this is among the very best. On top of that, the production quality of the film is top-shelf. If you own a Haruhi anime, this should be it. If you are an anime collector, this should be in your collection. I would say more, but I am usually critical and this time have nothing to be critical about.

Anyone who has seen the first 2 seasons of this anime needs to experience this movie if you have not seen them, please do or read below. Clocking in at over 2 hrs 43 min, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a faithful representation of the novel, but in my opinion, conveys the message more effectively than the source material. It is a masterpiece that had me endure almost every human emotion at one time or another.

For anyone who is not familiar with this, the Haruhi Suzumiya saga (Suzumiya Haruhi in Japanese) is an anime adapted from a series of light novels by Nagaru Tanigawa. (PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL TRY TO KEEP THIS AS SPOILER FREE AS POSSIBLE, BUT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE MOVIE, YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE PREMISE OF SEASON 1 AND 2 VERY LIGHT TO NO SPOILERS WILL BE REVEALED ABOUT THE MOVIE.)

It is the story of a sarcastic young man named Kyon who tells us early on that he has put away childish heroes and myths and is ready to experience the real world. On his first day of school he meets a beautiful yet interestingly bored young girl named Haruhi. Yet, unlike a "normal" female student who is interested in dating, sports, or joining school activities, she announces to her class that her only goal is in meeting "aliens, time travelers or espers (psychics)." Pretty weird to say the least!

However, the plot quickly jolts when Kyon unwittingly inspires the melancholic Haruhi to create her own club which she dubs the SOS Brigade (Spreading excitement all Over the world with Suzumiya haruhi brigade or S-O-S for short). The now spirited, eccentric, and almost intimidating Haruhi forcibly drafts Kyon and 3 other students into her club and sets out on a mission to find these supernatural beings and help other students who have dealt with mysterious happenings.

Of course, this would not be a unique anime without using sexy bunny costumes to advertise the club, blackmailing the computer club to set up the brigade's computer network, and students trying to kill Kyon to see how Haruhi's attitude will change...What???...just stay with me for a moment. Also, everyone has to keep Haruhi happy all the time because she has the power to destroy the universe if she gets angry or bored...YES THAT'S RIGHT! Ms. Suzumiya, unbeknownst to her, has supernatural powers that can recreate the entire universe or even destroy or change reality itself!

Another catch...the 3 other SOS club members soon reveal to Kyon that they are in fact the beings Haruhi has been searching for a time traveler, alien and esper who were sent by their respective organizations to keep an eye on Haruhi while preventing the end of the world. To top it off, Kyon is not allowed to tell Haruhi and has to pretend that life is peaches-and-cream, while he experiences giant crickets and lasers shooting out of people's eyes...just to name a few bizarre happenings. And of course, who is behind it all...you guessed it...Haruhi! So how does our cynical and want-to-be normal Kyon feel about this...NOT TOO HAPPY!

Many adventures take place in the first 2 seasons, which is why I heavily recommend watching them before this movie which is in fact the 4th novel in the series. In addition, there are character development and plot elements that rightfully set the viewer up for what happens.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya takes place during Christmastime and the SOS Brigade (really Haruhi) plans to throw a Christmas Eve party in the club room. Kyon, still furious over Haruhi's hi jinx and the fact that he cannot experience a normal life continues to pout over his ridiculous reality...that is until he wakes up one morning and finds out that everything he knows changes. Students and classrooms are missing, sickness is plaguing the school, SOS brigade members have no idea who Kyon is and most importantly...Haruhi Suzumiya disappears!...and no one even remembers who she is!

In a hybrid of "It's a Wonderful Life" meets "Back to the Future," Kyon is given a rare perspective of how things can be without the supernatural chaos that has plagued him for the last few months. Be prepared to undergo numerous emotions as we see Kyon diagnose this new world without Haruhi Suzumiya and even contemplate if this is a reality he secretly desires to remain in. Of course, he still does not know how Haruhi could do such a thing...or is something else pulling the strings of the universe...? Kyon, who has wanted no part of any of this, is now in the driver's seat and is forced to make decisions that will change his life and the world's forever.

This Blu-ray is the Hong Kong version Region A and is compatible with US players, including the PS3. It is well made with the box art being the graphic shown on this page. The disk includes pop-up menus you would expect from a Blu-ray interface and fans of the series will immediately recognize the main menu song "Bouken Desho Desho?" (the opening for Season 1). I will mention that there is an animation of images from the film that could be a little spoiler happy, but nonetheless is still beautiful to see and did not ruin anything for me. The special features are only the trailers, but the real special feature is watching this in High Definition.

The English subtitles are in a crisp white (no yellow -italics garbage) and the animated visuals are gorgeous. There are a few spots where the color seems a bit washed in certain bright scenes but this might appear differently for people's televisions. In addition, it is true that people can watch this movie on the web, but there is no comparison to watching it in 1080p in your living room.

The movie is currently being dubbed in English and should be coming to our shores later this year (which I too will pick-up). However, if you cannot wait, pick up this Japanese language/English Subs edition.

In conclusion, in my opinion, this is the best anime movie that I have ever seen. What Season 1 and 2 did in comedy and suspense, Disappearance bridges into seriousness and contemplation. The soundtrack, produced by Satoru Kosaki, sounds simple yet magnificent especially the track "Ready." Although the movie is lengthy, it always captures my attention in all the right places and I am left wanting more. You will laugh, you will cry...you will reflect even after the movie finishes. For those who have seen both Season 1 and 2, you will love and feel for characters even more. For all, I hope you will walk away with an assessment of your own life...and as Kyon has to do, realize just how important your decisions are to yourself and to the world around you.

The Private Eyes (2010)

The Private EyesBuy this flick. You probably saw it on cable 20 years ago, or maybe some goof at the office told you about it. Here's why it's worth owning.

Somewhere along the way Hollywood decided films like 'The Private Eyes' weren't suitable for production. Not being a student of film or pop culture, I'm not really sure why. It probably cost next-to-nothing to make, is thoroughly enjoyable, and is suited for virtually any audience -one could watch this with grandma or their drinking buddies.

Regardless, the world has changed, so thankfully we have little gems like this to remind us of how things ought to be. So while my buddies can rave about crap like the 'Matrix Returns,' I'll settle down and watch Conway and Knotts bungle their way through 90 minutes of side-splitting joy. Call me corny, but gags like the time pistol, which goes off every hour, or the never-ending supply of homing pigeons (gone awry) are priceless.

Sure, guys like Chris Tucker are funny, but I just can't see them pulling off any bit that doesn't involve dope, profanity, and/or both. That's not a knock on today's comedy, but anyone who's a fan of the art will get a kick out of 'the Private Eyes.'

First the DVD review: This DVD was/is put out by "Hens Tooth" video. (Hens Tooth?) Features the original theatrical trailer, which in itself is a gem; a wonderful stills gallery featuring behind the scenes making of the movie...priceless! And an awesome commentary by Tim Conway and the Director Lang Elliot who offer tons of little know facts and insight to this classic! This DVD is crisp and clear and so is the sound! The only thing this DVD lacks are the deleted and alternate scenes and alternate angles they showed on TV back in 1984. (see below for details) But, I'm happy to take what they give!

I know this is going to sound odd, but this is my favorite comedy of all time! No question! I have always been a big fan of Tim Conway and Don Knotts! (Who isn't?) Both men are absolute geniuses and have been underused since this movie came out back in 1981. This movie left a huge impression on me when I was a kid! I have always wanted a house just like the one in this movie! Who wouldn't want a 252 room estate! You could almost sleep in a different room for a full year! I was equally impressed when I found out the house in this movie is a real house! It's the Biltmore House and gardens. The real house is in Asheville North Carolina. Although the Biltmore House doesn't have 252 rooms (darn!) it is an absolutely gorgeouse manor! I highly recommend you check out their website! They will even send you a free brochure which pulls out into a mini poster! I have one on my wall right now! Very cool!

Anyways, back to the review...This is one movie that can be shared with the whole family! When this movie came out I was 10 years old and was so impressed by the look of it, the hysterical comedy, the cast, and the mystery storyline! You had to be there, but everytime and I mean EVERYTIME I saw this movie the theater was packed and sold out! Movies back then would run for 3-6 months at a time! (this is before even video and vcr's) I would clip every article or advertisement for this movie and I still have them today in a scrapbook! Yes, I am a fan!

Tim and Don play two ameturish private detectives who are called in to investigate the murder of Lord and Lady Morley, the owners of the estate. Don plays the straight guy to a T! Tim plays a wacky, paranoidish, inventor/detective. One of Tims inventions is called a time gun, which goes off every hour! He is also afraid of a legendary creature called the "Wookalar"! A half pig half human creature that will "suck your brains right out your nose!" Very funny stuff! You have to see it for yourself! The two detectives run into a myriad of funny characters along the way in the Manors staff and housekeeprs/caretakers! Just when they think they know who the killer is..that suspect ends up dead! Hilarious!

Now, here is something to note: I was extactic when this movie first aired on TV back in 1984 and happily taped it! Lucky for anyone else who taped it (and still has the tape like me!) because they showed scenes and alternate takes/angles that are NOT IN THIS DVD! They show a scene with Trisha Noble and Tim Conway eating dinner at a loooong dinner table that is just hilarious! Tim dresses up as Don's character, in hopes of "fooling" the killer, as a decoy. Trishas character just beats the crud out of Tim as she gets upset when people try to "trick" her! Hilarious!

The next scene they showed was an extra scene of Tim trying to send off a Homing pigeon, with an update of their investigation to Scotland Yard. Tim has a whole crate of homing pigeons and every time he trys to send a message something happens to the bird! So, in the deleted scene Tim paints a pigeon black, so no one can see it at night thus nothing should happen to it, and when he throws it out the window of his room...the pigeon goes but the wings stay in his hands! Cruel? Yes, by todays standards, but still funny!

Next, there is an alternate scene when the maid is preparing tea for Tim and Don and the killer slips poison in their cups. And there are a couple of alternate angle shots throughout the TV version.

This is an absolute classic comedy! Buy it before it goes out of print!

I loved this film as a kid, and if you want something to watch with the family you don't have to go any further. Great family entertainment. BUT this DVD sucks. It's a bad pan & scan, mediocre video, okay audio, and no extras. It's very expensive for such a shoddy DVD. I'd skip it for now because the rights should revert and a new version out in a year or so.

If you loved Tim Conway on The Carol Burnett Show and if Barney Fife always made you smile, then this movie is a must-see. The Private Eyes is a campy, contrived, and wonderfully silly movie. But you'll laugh as these old-school comedians bumble their way through a spooky old mansion in search of a killer, a la the board game Clue. You'll find all the expected players and a plot that has a comfortable--and predictable--familiarity. It's the interplay between the Conway and Knotts that makes this movie a winner.

If you don't take yourself or your laughs too seriously (and if you don't mind watching comedians who get their laughs at THEIR OWN expense without the profanity and vulgarity that so often passes for comedy), you'll love this. Tim Conway has some of his finest moments as the dim-witted yet good-intentioned Dr. Tart.

I have loved this movie since I first saw it on HBO as a young teen. It was an elusive find on VHS, so I'm thrilled to find it now on DVD.

That's one of Tim Conway's lines, which starts a bunch of gross notions that will make you giggle, big time. His silly sense of humor is all over this movie (he cowrote it).

All I can say is, when you bring Tim Conway and Don Knotts together, you are sure to have fun.

They are two of the funniest people ever.

This was one of those flicks that, back in the 80's, came on tv on a Saturday afternoon and you'd watch it and laugh. My favorite running gags are the pigeons and the "alarm gun".

This movie is right up my alley, along with stuff from Monty Python, Mel Brooks, Danny Kaye, Martin Short, Carol Burnett, Steve Martin, and also Woody Allen's early films.

And the fact that it's a broad homage to whodunits is gravy. It's a great companion to Murder By Death, and Clue.

10 (2011)

10In 10, Dudley Moore gives a five star performance on two fronts as both a comic and music genius. Film fans may be unaware that Moore scored several films and performed as a concert pianist in his career in addition to his acting talents.

Moore plays a fortyish songwriter who has developed the mother of all mid-life crisis's. Julie Andrews (who looks fantastic here BTW) shines as his impatient love interest and Bo Derek is lovely as Dudley's fantasy girl. Brian Dennehy and Dee Wallace-Stone are very good in supporting roles.

The DVD transfer is good especially for a film that has a little age. The sound is mono only which is disappointing but understandable. This is one of Blake Edwards best films and a must see for fans of romantic comedy. It is sad and sobering to realize that both Moore's and Andrew's gifts have been diminished by illness. Grab this DVD and take time to remember how really talented they both are.

Dudley Moore plays a fellow by the name of George Webber. Webber is a wealthy, accomplished & respected musician who has a great many friends and admirers. There is one problem. He is in his 40s and begins to experience his mid-life crisis. He is restless & bored with life. Although settling in to middle age, he finds that he is still attracted to women in their 20s (a "problem" that I myself experience).

By chance, he spies a beautiful young woman (played by Bo Derek) who is on her way to her wedding. She is the most gorgeous creature he has ever seen and he immediately becomes obsessed with her. This obsession leads to a great many mis-adventures that lead the viewer through the balance of the film.

While it is not apparent on the surface, I would characterize 10 as a dark comedy. It is somewhat morose to think about getting older and no longer being young & vibrant. The creative ways in which the film differentiates Moore's character from the young lover of Bo Derek's persona are almost creepy.

Aside from the tragic loss of youth, the film is also a commentary on the issue of people's personalities not matching their exterior appearance. While she is beautiful, Bo Derek's character is found to be quit wanting on the personality side of the ledger. She is shallow and superficial. Insofar as being a worthwhile person, she can hardly compete with George's girlfriend (portrayed by Julie Andrews).

Of all of Blake Edward's films, this one is probably in the top 5. It is insightful into what troubles we human beings as we grapple with your mortality and the decline of our bodies. On the upside, there is also some gratuitous nudity, although they could have shown a LOT more of Bo Derek. If Amazon had a 10 star rating, I would give this one a 9!

This is a magnificent comedy about a male in a mid-life crisis who sees a beautiful women and becomes infatuated. Bo Derek made a career of this movie. No acting skills at all but her desirous beauty alone makes her perfect for the role. And Dudley Moore? This is movie also made his career. In a supporting role, Brian Dennehy starts his career with a great role as a bartender. Also, my kudos to Blake Edwards.

Probably most under-appriciated is the magnificent score, particularly the songs of his lust and yearning for Bo Derek. But it's never as real in real life and Moore finds this out. Anyone married for 5 years who hasn't seen this movie should curl up for an afternoon with this on the tube. It's a classic of marriage, love, and life in Los Angeles.

Blake Edward's film "10" is probably among one of the funniest movies to come out of the 1970's.It is both a celebration and condemnation of the sexual antics (post pill/pre-aids)of our society during the "Me Decade".In the story, Dudley Moore (in one of his best roles)plays George Webber, a Burt Bachrach style composer, who seems to have everything including wealth, fame, talent and a wonderful girlfriend (marvelously played by Julie Andrews). Unfortunately George has just celebrated his 42nd birthday and is having a huge mid-life crisis. He does this by fixating on a just married beauty(played by the ravishing Bo Derek)who is the "10" of the film's title.George, hilariously chases her down to a Mexican vacation resort, where he learns the lesson, that one must be careful, what one wishes for.The "10" might be a beautiful girl, but she is ultimately an empty person, who lives for nothing more then self-gratification. This is a really funny movie farce that seems to give us a little of everything. The scenes of physical slapstick probably can only be rivaled by Blake's own "Pink Panther" movies. The dialogue is witty and delivered with the best of comic timing. But what ultimately makes this movie is the performances by Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews. Both actors play their characters with both heart and emotion. These two have such a wonderful chemistry together (even when they are fighting) that you wonder how Moore's character can even have such an idiotic mid-life crisis. Finally, I must mention the movie's funniest scene and it's use use of Ravel's 'Bolero'. In the scene, Moore tries to seduce the beautiful Derek, who infuriatingly insists, that he keep re-starting the "mood music". Never has a piece of classical music been put to such comic effect. It led to the real life '70s fad of using 'Bolero'as "make-out music". This is a really a funny movie that will provide you with a great night of comic entertainment.

One of the best all-time real life comedies. They don't make em like this anymore. Bo Derek is amazing, Dudley Moore is brilliant. This is one of the five best movies I've ever seen. If you like rock-em sock-em far fetched explosion's and car chases, move on. This is a realistic, well written, well acted, real life story of a middle aged man going through mid-life crisis. It's not a male bashing or female demeaning movie. It's a good realistic story about some really interesting people going through what most people go through at some point in time. The movie came out around 1980 but you don't get the sense that your watching an old movie when your watching it. It's timeless. One of those movies you will watch more than a couple of times over the years.

Ocean's 11 (50th Anniversary) (2010)

Ocean's 11Simply put, this film has not looked better since it played in a theater.

Warner Brothers did a fantastic job with the transfer and it looks even better than the version that's played HBO and Cinemax off and on over the past few years.

If you're a fan of this film, you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to purchase this disc, even if it means you need to purchase a Blu-ray player as well!

Note the commentary is the same one from the DVD editions, but is still entertaining, and there are a few new extras on this disc.

I'll be forever grateful that WB decided to issue this catalog title on BD.

Sinatra and his best friends at their best. A good plot and the transfer to Blu ray is terrific. Nevertheless the sound is 1.0 and not AC3 or DTS in my copy. I think that today technology makes miracles with the sound. Anyway Sinatra is good in any format

The original Ocean's Eleven has been sneered at in recent years, mainly by people who like the remake. In fact the original is an interesting and entertaining movie that is still well worth watching, particulaly by fans of the main stars.

The central story is about a group of ex 82nd Airborne servicemen attempting to rob five big Las Vegas casinos and how their ingenious plan goes astray. The narrative is augmented by historically fascinating shots of Las Vegas as it was circa 1960. Especially interesting for fans of a bygone era in show business are the bill boards announcing which stars are appearing at which casino. That delightful and mostly forgotten Canadian singer Gisele Mackenzie is prominently proclaimed.

The Blu-ray presentation of the movie is superb and cannot be praised too highly. Watching this BRD via a projector on a ten foot wide screen was as good as seeing the movie in a cinema. I recommend this Blu-ray disc to anyone who enjoys the movie, particularly if they have a projector.

Frank Sinatra's involvement with OCEAN'S ELEVEN began when a Las Vegas gas station attendant handed Sinatra his screenplay. Frank's enthusiasm for the story carried over to his buddies and "Ocean's 11" became the first of several Rat Pack movies. A solid cast, several cameos, a tight script and breezy ad-lib performances by its principals make this crime heist tale great fun. Seeing Frank, Dean and Sammy in their prime and hearing Davis's vocal on the movie's theme adds to the enjoyment.

SYNOPSIS--

Eleven buddies (led by Danny Ocean, aka Sinatra) plan and pull off a theft at five Las Vegas casinos simultaneously. They get away with their haul, but are later confronted by an ex-gangster who's figured out what occurred and is demanding half the take.

Shirley MacLaine's impromptu appearance as a tipsy gal is a highlight; George Raft (who was a personal friend of Vegas pioneer Bugsy Siegel) portrays a casino owner and Red Skelton appears as himself. Richard Boone is the voice of an unseen minister; TV quiz show announcer George Fenneman can be heard in a phone conversation with an interrogating sheriff. Watch for one-time cowboy star Hoot Gibson in his last screen appearance, as a roadblock deputy.

.

The Rat Pack's next adventure was SERGEANTS 3, a 1962 remake of "Gunga Din." Frank and Dean also show up at the end of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's last road picture, THE ROAD TO HONG KONG (1961).

Harold & Kumar (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle / Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay / A V

Harold & KumarMy husband loves the Harold and Kumar movies, so when I saw that there was a Blu-ray edition out with a collectible metal case, I was thrilled! He had them on DVD and is slowly swapping his movies from DVD to Blu-ray. I bought this for him for Christmas and it he loved it! My only problem is that the metal case was slightly dented... but that probably happened during shipping.

Hysterical to say the least. The 2 stoners are back for more adventure. I met Kal Penn a long time ago but he was so cool it's not even funny. So I guess you could say I have a connection with the Harold and Kumar series. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Plus the hot girls in it didn't hurt LOL
