Look Who's Talking

Look Who's Talking"Look Who's Talking" is probably my favorite film with Kirstie Alley, my favorite film with John Travolta (though "Grease" comes close) and my favorite film with Bruce Willis (though I'm not exactly a fan of his). It's funny, it's romantic, it's got some innovative special effects, a couple of car chases, and John Travolta even gets to fly a plane (which he must have really enjoyed at the time!).

Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, an accountant who has an office affair with one of her clients (George Segal), and ends up getting pregnant. It wasn't planned, and she's a little ashamed of the source, but Mollie soon warms to the idea of having a baby. After a traumatic day late in the preganacy, Mollie goes into labor in the middle of the bustling streets of New York, and takes a cab driven by the easy going James (John Travolta). Though it's not really what he wants to do (he wants to be a pilot) he's very good at driving a cab, and gets Mollie there very quickly. She has the baby, Mikey, and he's something of a thinker (voice/thoughts spoken by Bruce Willis), wondering to himself what this strange world around him is, and who these strange people around him are. He starts to grow up as time goes on, and Mollie decides to look for a father. She made a mistake, and she owes it to Mikey to find him a Dad. She dates here, she dates there, but could the right Dad be staring her in the face this whole time?

Everyone plays their part well, and the plot flows really nicely, bit of action, bit of a thoughtful moment, bit of a laugh. It's a romatic comedy of sorts, and it's a funny look at early motherhood, it's interesting seeing both happening at the same time. It's one of those films I can watch again and again, and have done over the years. The soundtrack is great too, a mixture of some older pop hits and contemporary 1980s tunes (including "Dumb Things" by Australian musician Paul Kelly during the taxi labor scene, a song I really like).

Overall, it's a sweet and funny little film, a definitely worth a look for fans of anyone in it. Recommended.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING actually did very well when it came out. I think these amazon people take things too seriously or don't have kids, or have such stressful lives they can't enjoy any kind of humor these movies have. I even enjoyed it when it came out and i was still in elementary school. My mom enjoyed it, and she loved babies and everything that had to do with babies and kids. Parents would enjoy this movie, not all but most. I'm not even one of those "kid lovers" I like kids, but not obsessed or anything like many kid lovers are. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING is a simple comedy with many funny parts like when kirstie alley's voice turned into a devil voice as she went into labor, because of the pain. To me, and my mom that part was hilarious and many women could relate to that because giving birth is no picnic, especially when it's your first baby. I've never given birth, but i've heard the stories. Anyways, i also read many amazon people's reviews about how horrible look who's talking too was, i'm thinkin' what is wrong with people nowadays? That was a cute movie too, the baby girl was as cute as a button, and the acting wasn't bad. I dont understand that. And at the end when mikey took his baby sisters's hand and they walked, and you could see her wobbling, and that cute baby walk which is so cute words can't describe, and the song i got you babe added to the moment. What's not to love, that was an adorable ending all i could say was AWWWWWW!!! people need to lighten up, especially if you wanna be good parents. Try to enjoy life, and not take things so seriously. These movies were basically about that. All those little funny and heartwarming moments when your kid is born and starts to grow and learn. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW i must agree with the others because it was horrible. It doesn't make sense frankly, the first two films were about talking babies, why go to dogs? I like dogs and everything buy WHY? It's almost embarassing to watch. Kind of absurd and yes the acting was horrific, and cheeesy script, and everything in the film was flat out stupid. What next talking furniture and appliances lol. But the first two are still great films, and john travolta is one of my favorite actors, and elias koteas who was in number two was funny, like he was in some kind of wonderful.

Buy Look Who's Talking Now

I've loved this movie since I was young, and didn't get half the jokes. A lot of the jokes are aimed at the adult audience, rather than teaching kids how they came into the world it wasn't by a stork!

With all the recent bad press about Kirstie Alley's weight gain, it's good to watch her, when she was still reasonably slim. And she looks great in this film. Especially when she does the little dance, while feeding Mikey, and John Travolta walks in.

Although John Travolta will never be as good as he was in Grease, this is one of those movies, where he provides the laughs, and genuinely looks quite nice especially when he has the bruise, after Mikey's real dad hits him with a phone! (You just wanna kiss him all better!) His love of beer and fast food is beginning to show in this, as he has a little stomach, which then becomes a big stomach for Pulp Fiction!

I'm never quite sure as Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey. When I was younger, I probably didn't see a lot of Bruce Willis in movies, and still to this day, I don't really recognise his voice. He's trying too hard to have a high voice, and sure, on certain words, he lets slip, and you can hear its him. But it just doesn't sound like him.

This is a terrific film, to watch as a youngster, and as an adult, and be able to appreciate the sexual chemistry between John & Kirstie. It's funny, and although, the sequels aren't as good, when are they? I just have to get the second one on DVD now!

Slap Shot (1977)

Slap ShotSlap Shot is a great hockey comedy. It's a hilarious, vulgar, completely wild joyride through the trials of a failing 70's steelmill-town based, utterly amateur hockey team. Failing, that is, until their players resort to pure violence in an attempt to keep their franchise alive.

Paul Newman plays the womanizing player/coach who, after a series of embarassing losses (including one to a visitng team's center who's flat drunk) needs to work with a 3 brother gang of misfits, who all look alike and have an incredibly aggressive style of playing.

Chaos insues when Newman's character decides to finally play these "goons" with his other teammates, and he watches as the fan base increases when they proceed to physically demolish without any love for the game the opposing teammates in an series of hysterical scenes that combine the best in hockey photography with hilariously explicit dialouge and violence. The shot of the goon's nonchalanty skating past the visitor's box and smacking each of them in the head with their sticks is classic.

This action scenes in this movie is everything you wished your NFL highlight tapes to be. The DVD itself is excellent quality, including the true film soundtrack (copyright limitation prevented some of the songs from appearing on the VHS and cable versions).

Extra bonus features are pretty nonexistent just some scene selections and generic Actor Profiles that were prelevant in the first generation of DVDs created a couple years ago but the quality and entertainment value of the movie more than makes up for these shortcomings.

Ask hardcore hockey fans (the kind that are familiar with the Montreal Maroons or that understand that present-day hockey is virtually figure-skating compared to the seventies) what their favorite sports movie is, or ask hockey pros what their favorite sports movie is; probably more than half the time, you'll hear "Slap Shot". Some "serious" sports films suffer from self-importance or a lack of realism; try watching a good war documentary for actual life-and-death situations. Thankfully, "Slap Shot" doesn't take itself terribly seriously yet still manages to paint an accurate, believable picture.

Sure, the humor is rude and crude, but necessary to paint a somewhat accurate picture of `70's minor league hockey (surely these guys weren't discussing Plato or speaking in blue-blood accents). It may be offensive to uninitiated people (e.g. people who don't watch hockey or team sports in general), but the humor is oft-hilarious for hockey fans.

Paul Newman plays crafty, alternately obnoxious and charming player-coach Reg Dunlop, leader of the mediocre minor league Charlestown Chiefs (though in reality the movie was filmed in Johnstown, PA). Fearful that the team is going to fold (now that the big mill in town is closing), Reg concocts a scheme in which he'll find a way to make the team better and profitable in the hopes that the yet-unknown owner will opt to sell the team rather than disband it.

What eventually generates interest and success in the team is their change to a rough-and-tumble style of play, mercilessly beating on opponents (a la the typical style of play for many `70's teams), largely thanks to the infusion of the three Hanson brothers (who in real life actually were minor-league bruisers), who also provide much of the humor in the film. Michael Ontkean plays Ned Braden, the Ivy Leaguer who is a skilled scorer and naturally is unhappy with the fight-first direction of the team. His dysfunctional relationship with his young alcoholic wife serves as a subplot and also reminds Reg of his own unhappy marriage, largely due to his hockey life.

The film is full of fantastically funny moments: Reg's disbelief upon seeing the Hanson's for the first time ("They brought their f**kin' toys with `em!"), the players being forced to do a fashion show that goes awry when one of the players strips, the great Strother Martin as the cheapskate conniving general manager, the French-Canadian goaltender having hallucinations after being pummeled with shots, the Hansons starting a fight before the national anthem even starts, etc.

This is definitely one of the best sports films ever made (both in terms of comedy, and strangely, realism); don't expect anything highbrow, though, "THIS IS HOCKEY!" as the Chiefs rug-adorned announcer yells as the Chiefs are mercilessly pummeling their opponents.

I have just received (and watched) the DVD version of "Slap Shot", and I thank the powers that be for restoring the original sound track to the movie. The generic music that was released on VHS took the heart out of the movie. With the restoration, and the excellent digital quality of the movie, my favorite film is complete. Now, a full 5 stars only because I can't give it 10.

Think about all the movies that were made during the 1970's whose storylines actually occurred during that same time. It'll probably take you a long time to come up with a relatively short list. Next, think of how many of those movies still get shown (albeit in an edited format) in regular rotation on network, local, or cable TV. There really aren't many of them, are there? "Jaws", "Saturday Night Fever", and the James Bond movies that Ted Turner runs during his semi-annual "Bond Marathons"...and that's pretty much it. Except, of course, for the timeless gem that IS "Slap Shot". This movie really has everything...violence (presented in a format that most people outside of Canada and the Northeastern US weren't used to seeing at the time), profanity (even Wayne Gretzky admitted in his autobiography that he tends to "turn the air a little blue" during games), drunkenness (by players and fans both on and off the ice), Canadian accents ("Two points, eh!"), bad hair ("WHY DO YOU WEAR THAT RUG?"), REALLY BAAAD clothes (they had to have raided the set of the last "Superfly" movie for some of those duds), bad cars (Reggie's Pontiac LeMans...who ever came up with the notion that vinyl tops were EVER cool?), a '70's soundtrack (thankfully and blissfuly restored to the DVD) that would do Quentin Tarantino proud, and of course SEX (yes, that's Ralphie's mom from "A Christmas Story" in bed with Paul Newman, topless, discussing her lesbian affairs. That's enough to curdle the blood and land a kid in therapy for years). At the time this movie was made, violence in hockey at all levels had reached epidemic proportions. At the top levels, superstar Bobby Hull staged a personal one-game strike in the WHA against the level of violence that was being permitted, and the Philadelphia Flyers had made it to three straight NHL Stanley Cup Finals (winning twice) while playing the most physically abusive style of hockey in memory (has anyone besides me noticed how closely Tim McCracken's Syracuse team uniforms at the end of the movie resemble the Flyers' outfits at that time?)...and of course in the lower league levels of the pro game there was far less scrutiny and things were only magnified as players anxious to do anything for a big-league call-up would in fact do things very similar to those captured in this movie. Yeah, okay, but what's all that really mean? Nothing of consequence. This is an entertaining movie, pure and simple. Hockey season isn't really hockey season until you get together with some friends, wrap your mitts 'round a few brews and watch this movie as it starts to get cold outside. For those of us living outside the NHL's (very limited) influence from the time the Atlanta Flames (look for their logo in the movie on an advertisement poster) left up until the NHL started to expand again in the early 1990's, this WAS pro hockey. The 1980 Miracle On Ice Olympic team was something diferent...somehow other-worldly in comparison...but the two are mutually exclusive outside of NHL markets as being the lasting impression of a fantastic sport. On a personal note, in 1994 the Atlanta Knights (now sadly defunct) were winning the International Hockey League's (ALSO sadly defunct) Turner Cup Championship in their home arena, The Omni (yes, this is gone, too). Richard Adler, Knights VP, had hired this guy "Claude the Happy Trumpeter" (from Quebec, I think) to wear a Knights jersey, blow his horn, and lead cheers during the Playoffs. Early in the 2nd period of the clinching game, he announces himself with a fanfare, runs down the aisle to the plexiglass, throws himself up against it...and crashes through to the ice below, knocking himself out. The game was delayed about twenty minutes as they collected him off the ice and replaced the panel he'd shattered (he was okay...he came back near the end of the game wearing a neckbrace; it was hilarious). All I could think of, other than trying to keep from spilling my beer and pissing myself with laughter, was that the whole thing was just so utterly "Slap Shot"-esque...and that somewhere Up There, Strother Martin had to be smiling.

it truly is considered one of the greatest sports movies of all time. LOL!!!

Slap Shot is about the Charleston Chiefs of the American Federal Hockey League, a minor league Hockey system. The Chiefs are in financial debt and rumors are that the team is about to be sold, attendence is bad, and the mill is about to close for good.

so Paul Newman, coach/player comes up with the perfect way to draw people and interest in the team, put on a show. He starts by saying things about one of the goalies wife, and this leads to the first awsome brawl of the game.

with the addition of the Hanson brothers, the movie gets awsome. the hanson brothers play so brutal, you'd be glad they were on your team. they hit, hook, spear, slash, and beat the crap out of opposing teams, which starts to lead to a fan following and a booster club.

Newman turns one of the soft spoken players into Killer, a blood mess like one of the fellas called him. he puts a bounty on the opposing coach, and starts a rumor that the team is about to be bought out by a florida retirement group.

they make it all the way to the title game, and then that's where i really don't understand it. they get into a huge fight, and the one guy that won't fight cause he wants to play it straight, starts to skate around undressing, leading to the opposing team hitting the ref getting disqualified. i don't really understand that whole part, but other than that, the movie is awsome.

it really captures the realness that these minor league hockey teams go through, like helping out with fashion shows.

Slap Shot is a great movie, i hope they another hockey movie in the near future as great as slap shot.

(Untitled) (2009)

(Untitled)The crisp satire "(Untitled)" is a smart and savage skewering of the art world where taste is dictated by hype and collectable value as opposed to passion or merit. If you've ever been to a perplexing gallery show, one that challenges the conventions of recognizable art, you're likely to delight in the absolutely ridiculously (but sadly believable) exhibits within the film. Combined with some equally obnoxious performance art, this is as spot-on in its mockery as you're likely to see! Appropriately populated with an elitism and an air of intellectual superiority, "(Untitled)" absolutely benefits from its incisive screenplay, talented cast, and a specific viewpoint targeting the criticisms inherent in the contemporary art scene. If you are fascinated by this world, knowledgeable about the state of modern art, or participate as a viewer or collector--this film is an easy recommendation. It has an insider's appeal that is undeniable. However, even if you know little about the topic, the film still boasts an outrageousness you may appreciate.

The film is headlined by an inspired Marley Shelton. I have been familiar with Shelton's work, but she has never been particularly vivid for me. Here, though, she shines with much sexiness and great comedic timing as a ritzy gallerist torn between two brothers. She represents one brother as a commercial venture, selling his paintings to institutional settings. His work, all variations of the same abstract theme, is not avant garde enough for a place in her gallery--but it sure does pay the bills! She is intrigued by his aloof sibling, Adam Goldberg, a rather unpleasant sound artist. Goldberg's work generally produces a riotous cacophony of noise which Shelton finds appealing. They are kindred souls as both have an emotional disconnectedness as well as a skewed vision of what constitutes art. This romance, such as it is, is a uniting of narcissists.

The film features a couple of very funny supporting roles--Zak Orth as a trendy collector with more money than sense and Vinnie Jones as an artist dealing in dead animals. "(Untitled)" starts out really strong--as I identified with its absurdity, I absolutely fell in love with the film. It may, however, go on a beat too long. The story suffers slightly in comparison to the set-up. As none of the characters are particularly likable, their personal lives and entanglements were far less interesting to me than the satiric elements in the film. But Shelton, in particular, keeps us on track and the end of her story is far more involving than anything the brothers have cooked up. A solid comedy, with elements of greatness, "(Untitled)" may not be perfect--but it's a very adept and pointed look that challenges the notion of what represents art. KGHarris, 2/11.

Beautifully photographed, well cast, intelligent script, intriguing music that staged the gallery perfectly for this smart comedy. We were engaged from the opening scene to end credits. Great commentary on interpreting "unique" in a world of awkward unicorns.

This may turn out to be my favorite film of the year! It is a hilarious send-up of the pretensions of the contemporary Art and Classical Music scenes. Knowledgeable viewers will have a field day identifying the delightful parodies of the work of several famous visual artists and composers, while everyone else will embrace this indulgent and warm-hearted portrait of a group of people whose only sin is that of taking themselves a bit too seriously. The splendid (and occasionally quite deliberately ridiculous!) music is provided by the fine American composer David Lang, who is best known for his work with the successful Bang On a Can ensemble. Lang was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in music for his choral piece The Little Match Girl Passion. I think you will all like this little movie. I laughed myself silly.

A great film that keenly displays the contemporary art world and its Technicolor, snub, uptight, and arrogant inhabitants. The film works as a comedy with its goofy and outrages characters and scenarios though thoughtfully displays a wide range of stronger emotions without being predictable and corny like most comedy films that try to these days. There is also a lot of girth to the story and can be looked at as an artist's portrait(if the viewer is willing to risk being the pun of the many jokes included in the film about the aesthetics of such things). If you have ever had a discussion of what is art and what isn't, if you ever found yourself confused by the minimalism or dadaism of an art piece, if you ever yelled at the fat fingers that twiddle at art and the artists these days, if you ever visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, this film is a must see.

I am not much a fan of comedies because I feel like people try to hard. But I am a fan of comedies with dysfunctional, weird characters or odd occurrences. This is a movie of people that are truly unhinged, odd , artistic in a amusing /entertaining in a interesting way. If you are not a intelligent person and don't catch on to dry humor ? Please do not waste your time on this you will be confused and bored. I love this movie I laughed until I couldn't laugh anymore this was so hilarious to me ! All of these people had terrible taste and bad judgment and they took there art and themselves way to seriously. If you like Punch drunk love, Or Very Bad things or Hard Candy ? This movie may be for you and in a genre you would like very much. The film is oddly entertaining with quirky characters and the cinematography is very well done.

Pyaar Impossible (2009)

Pyaar ImpossibleI've always regarded Uday Chopra as a second hand leading man, but I may have to rethink things because of this movie, and maybe Uday's being so likable in this one is due partly to his having done the writing and producing along with the acting. But there's a lot of wish fulfillment in PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE! if you ever were a nerd or if you've ever yearned for that special someone who never even glanced at you one time. Slackers like me, we dig movies like this. Even vanity projects like this.

Pity the poor unassuming nerd. Uday Chopra plays bespectacled college loser Abhay Sharma and he's deeply smitten with the beautiful Alisha (Priyanka Chopra, no relations, thank god). But the social status quo the way it is, Abhay never stood a chance. Didn't even matter that he saved her life one evening. She just never noticed him. And then she left college.

It's seven years later now, and Abhay still pines for Alisha, but he's moved on, sort of. A computer whiz, Abhay has over the past seven years been working on a revolutionary software and he's at last perfected it. But, in the midst of pitching his product to a prospective investor, his software is stolen. A distraught Abhay tracks the thief down to Singapore, where out of the blue, on the street, he sees... well, you can guess...

PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE! ("Love Impossible") is a romantic comedy that shouldn't really work, but does. The story is contrived, the situations are formulaic, I saw every plot twist coming, and it didn't matter. I still liked this movie a lot. With not much being original nowadays, it all falls on execution and the appeal of the actors. And this film benefits from slick direction and a very likable cast. Priyanka Chopra, who was amazing in WHAT'S YOUR RAASHEE?, has become a fine comedienne and she turns in another marvelous performance, seamlessly segueing from college party girl to responsible single working mother. The precocious and very adorable little girl, Advika Yadav, makes her debut and she is a born scene-stealer. And Uday Chopra comes across as so damn nice and sweet. His Abhay Sharma quietly dreams his big romantic dreams, way out of his league, and it's really hard to hate on him. It'd be like kicking a puppy. I wish, though, that Uday had pulled out more from his repertoire of expressions than just that one persistent goofily smiling, half-dazed look.

I liked the musical numbers "Alisha," "10 on 10," "Pyaar Impossible," "Ek Thi Ladki (bada bada boom)," and "You & Me" pretty much all the tracks are breezy and hummable. There are some really good laughs in this one, the best being the utterly sidesplitting "Thai tradition" scene and those moments when Abhay demonstrates his questionable nanny/housekeeping skills. You've got Abhay assuming a double life and then a triple life, and he's got his work cut out for him as he tries to keep this and that identity secret from various people. There's the corporate theft sub-plot and a dash of caper intrigue as Abhay tries to get back what's his. Mostly, though, it's about the unrequited love story and the comedy. Fine with me. It's nice to find out that, once all is said and done, pyaar is not impossible after all...

This is a great film on several levels.

First, unlike many recent American films one gains the distinct impression that the screenwriters knew where the story was going before they started writing. As a result the film was a consistent coherent whole that made sense and was connected throughout. While the plot was predictable in had enough extra charm and humor to make it a non-issue. Some of the "Hindified" contractions in the subtitles added to the charm.

Second, partly as as result of the first characteristic, it was very warm and entertaining without sweating bodies rolling around in random beds to distract the viewer from the fact the writers of too many modern films are totally artless. Parents won't have to hit the pause or stop button if the kids should happen to walk into the room.

The of course there are those of us who can identify with Abhay's position and plight as a rather nerdy guy, who despite acceptable or better intellect, compassion, ability and capacity to love, are possessed of "odd facial features" as an other reviewer so coldly puts it. As such a one, blessed to have amazingly won the love of a fantastic beautiful woman, I can joyfully confess that such things can happen in the real world.

A great, wholesome film!

This 2010 Bollywood treat is my favorite foreign film. "Pyaar" means "love" and love does seem impossible for a computer geek (Uday Chopra) who has eyes only for the popular girl ( the lovely Priyanka Chopra) who doesn't even know he exists. Years later, through fate and a case of mistaken identity, the geek becomes the male nanny for his secret crush's little girl. This movie offers a buffet of movie genres; romance, comedy and drama. It's also a musical with such fun, catchy tunes as "Ten On Ten" and "Oopsy Doodle." I highly recommend it.

I first saw this movie on Netflix. I was so impressed that I bought it on Blue Ray.

This is probably the best Romantic Musical Comedy that I have ever seen.

For the most part the film is in Hindi but there is a lot of english dialog in it.

All five music videos are fantastic. Any of them would become a top 10 hit if it had exposure. I find myself singing them in the car.

Blue Ray video and soundtrack quality is excellent.

What can I say?

This film is a sleeper.

I love this film.

I relate to this movie so much, it's kinda sad actually. But Abhay Sharma (Uday Chopra) was the biggest pushover I've ever seen. I was frustrated at times when Abhay was acting like a complete geekazoid and not growing a pair to confront the one he loves, or the one whole stole his million-dollar idea. But excluding this, every part of this movie was perfect, and very enjoyable. The "Thai Tradition" part was kinda wacky and I didn't like it as much as some might, but it was very entertaining. Priyanka Chopra is a goddess as Alisha, and there is nothing else really I can say about her. Her young daughter, played by Advika Yadav, was annoying at times, but was very good in her part and even becomes very like-able towards the end.

I love this movie because I can really relate to it, and it's your standard beauty and the geek movie. Topped with Priyanka Chopra, you cannot go wrong. Watch it already!

Griff the Invisible (2010)

Griff the InvisibleBy day Griff has the usual office job where he is bullied by his workmates and is only ever visited by his brother who tries to make Griff conform to society. By night Griff takes on the alternate persona as the town's superhero protecting the city streets. Griff is invisible to the world until he meets his brother's new girlfriend, Melody who turns Griff's life upside down with her eccentricities that only match his own.

Griff the Invisible is a very touching story that blends the lines between reality and illusion that is definitely worth at least one watch and I would highly recommend it. The story isn't too similar but if you like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind this movie is definitely worth a chance.

Lov superhero movies, Netflix had this and stopped weirdly half way through and just needed to watch in its entirety. Good fun quirky film

Set It OffFour Black women struggling with trying to keep afloat and fighting off the biting sharks of poverty: One a single mother, another a single woman raising her only sibling: a brother, another who was wrongfully terminated from her position as a bank teller after a robbery-gone-bad, and another just fed up with her position working for Luther, the foul-mouthed owner of his own janitorial company. For each of their own individual reason, they all band together and decide to pull their own bank heist. Disguised in wigs and clear masks, they coolly and calmly walk into banks and demand money. To make matters more complicated, Stoney {Pinkett} meets and begins to fall for a branch manager played by Blair Underwood. While working for Luther, the discover he runs out with their money, and now they have to "hit" the bank one more time. With the police hot on their trail, the ill-conceived robberies fly out of control. This movie is filled with emotion, honesty, and a tragic ending. Guest appearances by Dr Dre as Black Sam and Dub-C as one of the bank robbers. This movie is a real crowd pleaser!!!

F. Gary Gray is one of the most talented directors today (not black directors, but director, period!) A film major, I look forward to the day I meet him.

I can't watch this movie when I am down, because it will make me think life just ain't worth living. It has a very very depressing ending. But overall, the narrative was excellent. Each one of the girls had a motive, whether it was directly indicated or not. Black intellects trash this movie because they see it as trapping African Americans in the Boyz N the Hood genre (which was also an excellent film). But they fail to see there are so many stories within the inner cities of African Americans. It is not just about robbing banks, gangs, or drugs, it is out survival, loyalty and frienship. Which I think mainstream America really does not understand and why I think so many black women go to jail for protecting their men involved in illegal activities.

Not to veer off the subject, but set it off is about loyalty and true friendship, (just like waiting to exhale, just a different neighborhood) with a fresh twist. Hats off to F. Gary Gray!

The issue with the story is that greed is bad. It's also a story about love, a universal subject. There are two different types of love here: heterosexual and homosexual, which is great because people should be true to themselves not just so they'll sleep well at nights, but so that they'll attract people who'll love them the way they are. I love that Blair Underwood and Jada Pinket-Smith have great chemistry. It's so beautiful to watch. I love that they talk about trying different delicacies, which is great because diversity is a great thing. I also love that they talk about their accomplishments because we should all have positive goals. Queen Latifah's character and her partner were great together. I took out a star because a major theme of the film is about robbing banks, which is a very bad idea. It's also a film about stereotyping people, which is a bad thing to do. So in a nutshell, diversity is amazing, different types of love are amazing, stereotyping people is wrong and don't rob banks.

A great movie with a great cast, this movie shows what can happen when you push a black woman to her last straw. From the beginning to the end this movie shows how easily one can be profiled as a criminal just by the company she keeps. Like how one of the characters were surrounded and killed by the SWAT team just because he had the same hair cut as one of the bank robbers. And he was a soon-to-be college student. There is a lot of emotions shown in this movie when the it takes you into each characters personal life and thier reasons for robbing the bank. Don't get me wrong there are no reasons for committing a crime like a bank robbery but their stories are compelling. The ending is sad, even though there was a bright side to the ending. It kind've teaches you a lesson about friendship and material things.

The acting was fantastic, you almost felt like the characters were real individuals(of course that is the point of acting). Queen, Jada, Kimberly, and Vivic really make this movie come to life. I would watch this movie all day everyday, just because it's so great.

The is the best movie I have ever seen dealing with the following themes: Friendship, Loyalty and Trust. Even though the movie is about crime, these themes dominate the plot. The girls' commitment to each other and loyalty to their cause is very impressive. Also the director of the movie deals with these themes in a easy, playful and humourous manner, even though the girls' couse is a risky and dangerous one. This keeps the audience interested. There is no dull moment or lousy scene in this movie.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

Safety Not GuaranteedSafety Not Guaranteed is a quirky love story that sucks you in the second it starts.

The story is about a team of 3 journalists (Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, and Karan Soni) who decide to write a story about a man who is seeking someone to travel with him back in time. He doesn't say where he's going or why, but the ad he writes is interesting enough for the story. Besides a wonderful subplot, thats basically the story. Its funny, cute, and above all else brutally honest. Our three journalists are all in someways emotionally damaged or emotionally distant, and watching these characters grow is a wonderful and move beyond their troubles is pure joy. Mark Duplass as Kenneth, the one who wrote the ad, is fantastic. He does such a good job with the character that about halfway through the movie, you begin to question if he really does know how to travel back in time or not. Aubrey Plaza as the one who gets close to him also does a great job, a character worth rooting for and one that by the end may have you holding back a few tears. Karan Soni plays the lovable geek while Jake Johnson has a subplot involving a past lover that is as heart wrenching as it is funny.

This movie is so beautifully simple that I can't recommend it enough. The performances are great, the music is wonderful, and the story is all being told in front of a beautiful backdrop (mostly filmed in or around Seattle).

5 stars.

This is a great gem of a movie that has all the tell tale markings of a sleeper hit. I have to say this film made me realize how jaded I've grown toward independent films. Having seen the trailer, I expected to be entertained and enjoy the film, but I was sure that I was beyond its warm and fuzzy sentiments I never expected to fall so hard for this movie.

It was absolutely lovely to watch a film that both my teenage son and I could enjoy that has great characters, plot, dialogue and direction. Not to mention heart, warmth, and a refreshing lack of violence and nudity. The film walks a fine line, yet never falls into the realm of the sappy, cliché, or bland family film. This is the kind of film that shows you how delightful it is to be surprised and charmed by everyday reality.

Highly Recommended!

Safety may not be guaranteed when you travel through time, but I can safely guarantee that this is an excellent movie. I ,on a whim, just decided to buy Safety Not Guaranteed through Amazon Instant Video. The performances are just great in this movie especially Mark Duplass (The League) as Kenneth and Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation) as Darius. Mark Duplass really shows what he can do as an actor in this movie as he plays a completely different character than Pete from the League. Kenneth is introverted and highly intelligent, but also is a bit crazy in an endearing way. There is also some good side story stuff featuring Jake Johnson (New Girl) and Karan Soni (Worst.Prom.Ever.) where Karan's character Arnau convinces Johnson's Jeff to give a girl a chance even if she looks different than she did twenty years ago. This movie is just so well acted, directed (Colin Trevorrow), and written (Derek Connolly) . There is a lot of deeper thoughts and feelings especially regarding the reasons for going back in time and the relationship that forms between Darius and Kenneth. There are also some great heartfelt moments and just as many fun moments. The ending is also not what you'd expect, and it was awesome. I absolutely loved this movie, and it's the best indie movie I've seen a while. GO BUY THIS NOW!

An ad appears in the paper:

"Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed."

Jeff (Jake Johnson from "New Girl"), an assistant editor for a magazine convinces his editor to let him and his two interns Arnau and Darius (Aubrey Plaza from "Parks and Recreation") try and find the person who placed the ad as there might be something there about which an article can be written. She agrees.

It turns out he has an ulterior motive, his old girl friend lives there and he wants to see if you can go home again. One of many subplots, this adds depth but is not the main focus of the film. They find the author of the ad, but he spots the assistant editor as a ringer right away. They then send in the incredibly withdrawn intern Darius and in an unconventional way, they bond.

Although the question of whether or not he can build a time machine is answered, I'm not going to reveal that here. That's OK; you see, It Doesn't Matter. This is not a movie about time travel. It's about what happens to all these people in the process of finding out.

I can't say enough good about this film. Well acted, well directed, good story, the whole thing. I can say that almost everyone will be thoroughly delighted. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes bittersweet, sometimes joyful, sometimes philosophical, always charmingly offbeat, this movie is a unique treasure.

I also can't say enough about what a pleasant surprise this movie is. It grossed less than $4 million so far, it's not the "Dark Knight" after all, so there is a whole world out there that hasn't yet experienced this gem. Become one of them. This is HIGHLY recommended.

A recommendation: Get the DVD vs. the Blu-Ray. This is a small indie film, and neither the video nor the audio are going to benefit that much from Blu-Ray. So, as long as they do a decent DVD transfer (and if they don't it's unlikely they'd be able to afford to do so on the Blu-Ray), I wouldn't endorse the 25% surcharge for Blu, especially given how well players upscale DVDs.

The last we heard of the Duplass Brothers (Jay and Mark), they brought us "Jeff, WHo Lives at Home". Now comes this, which is co-produced by the Duplass brothers and others, and which stars Mark Duplass.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" (86 min.) is based on a real ad which appeared in a magazine, looking for a time travel mate, "please bring your own weapons, safety not guaranteed". From that writer Derek Connolly made up this story. In its very essence, a journalist and 2 interns from Seattle Magazine go out to Ocean View, WA, to find out who placed the ad (which turns out to be Kenneth, played by Mark Duplass), and why. One of the interns, Darius (played by Aubrey Plaza) poses as the time traveler-wanna be. Apart from this main story line, there are several parallel lines, one involving the magazine reporter looking up a HS girlfriend, now 20 years later. Duplass plays Kenneth straight up and you cannot tell whether the guy really believes that he can time travel, or whether he's just putting us on. That is one of the movie's biggest strenghts as it keeps the interest in the plot. That said, I was a bit let down by the ending, which came with a number of things unexplained, or worse, simply not believable.

This is a quirky little movie that is mostly entertaining. The acting performances are great, in particular from Mark Duplass and Aubrey Plaza. Kudos also for the excellent soundtrack from Ryan Miller. Make sure to stick around to the very end, as "Big Machine", a song that Duplass briefly plays solo in the movie, plays in full band mode as the end credits roll, and it's a fantastic tune (performed by/credited to Ryan Miller and Mark Duplass). This movie is MILES away from your standard Hollywood fare, but if you are in the mood for a good indie movie, I'd readily recommend "Safety Not Guaranteed".
