Look Who's Talking

Look Who's Talking"Look Who's Talking" is probably my favorite film with Kirstie Alley, my favorite film with John Travolta (though "Grease" comes close) and my favorite film with Bruce Willis (though I'm not exactly a fan of his). It's funny, it's romantic, it's got some innovative special effects, a couple of car chases, and John Travolta even gets to fly a plane (which he must have really enjoyed at the time!).

Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, an accountant who has an office affair with one of her clients (George Segal), and ends up getting pregnant. It wasn't planned, and she's a little ashamed of the source, but Mollie soon warms to the idea of having a baby. After a traumatic day late in the preganacy, Mollie goes into labor in the middle of the bustling streets of New York, and takes a cab driven by the easy going James (John Travolta). Though it's not really what he wants to do (he wants to be a pilot) he's very good at driving a cab, and gets Mollie there very quickly. She has the baby, Mikey, and he's something of a thinker (voice/thoughts spoken by Bruce Willis), wondering to himself what this strange world around him is, and who these strange people around him are. He starts to grow up as time goes on, and Mollie decides to look for a father. She made a mistake, and she owes it to Mikey to find him a Dad. She dates here, she dates there, but could the right Dad be staring her in the face this whole time?

Everyone plays their part well, and the plot flows really nicely, bit of action, bit of a thoughtful moment, bit of a laugh. It's a romatic comedy of sorts, and it's a funny look at early motherhood, it's interesting seeing both happening at the same time. It's one of those films I can watch again and again, and have done over the years. The soundtrack is great too, a mixture of some older pop hits and contemporary 1980s tunes (including "Dumb Things" by Australian musician Paul Kelly during the taxi labor scene, a song I really like).

Overall, it's a sweet and funny little film, a definitely worth a look for fans of anyone in it. Recommended.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING actually did very well when it came out. I think these amazon people take things too seriously or don't have kids, or have such stressful lives they can't enjoy any kind of humor these movies have. I even enjoyed it when it came out and i was still in elementary school. My mom enjoyed it, and she loved babies and everything that had to do with babies and kids. Parents would enjoy this movie, not all but most. I'm not even one of those "kid lovers" I like kids, but not obsessed or anything like many kid lovers are. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING is a simple comedy with many funny parts like when kirstie alley's voice turned into a devil voice as she went into labor, because of the pain. To me, and my mom that part was hilarious and many women could relate to that because giving birth is no picnic, especially when it's your first baby. I've never given birth, but i've heard the stories. Anyways, i also read many amazon people's reviews about how horrible look who's talking too was, i'm thinkin' what is wrong with people nowadays? That was a cute movie too, the baby girl was as cute as a button, and the acting wasn't bad. I dont understand that. And at the end when mikey took his baby sisters's hand and they walked, and you could see her wobbling, and that cute baby walk which is so cute words can't describe, and the song i got you babe added to the moment. What's not to love, that was an adorable ending all i could say was AWWWWWW!!! people need to lighten up, especially if you wanna be good parents. Try to enjoy life, and not take things so seriously. These movies were basically about that. All those little funny and heartwarming moments when your kid is born and starts to grow and learn. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW i must agree with the others because it was horrible. It doesn't make sense frankly, the first two films were about talking babies, why go to dogs? I like dogs and everything buy WHY? It's almost embarassing to watch. Kind of absurd and yes the acting was horrific, and cheeesy script, and everything in the film was flat out stupid. What next talking furniture and appliances lol. But the first two are still great films, and john travolta is one of my favorite actors, and elias koteas who was in number two was funny, like he was in some kind of wonderful.

I've loved this movie since I was young, and didn't get half the jokes. A lot of the jokes are aimed at the adult audience, rather than teaching kids how they came into the world it wasn't by a stork!

With all the recent bad press about Kirstie Alley's weight gain, it's good to watch her, when she was still reasonably slim. And she looks great in this film. Especially when she does the little dance, while feeding Mikey, and John Travolta walks in.

Although John Travolta will never be as good as he was in Grease, this is one of those movies, where he provides the laughs, and genuinely looks quite nice especially when he has the bruise, after Mikey's real dad hits him with a phone! (You just wanna kiss him all better!) His love of beer and fast food is beginning to show in this, as he has a little stomach, which then becomes a big stomach for Pulp Fiction!

I'm never quite sure as Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey. When I was younger, I probably didn't see a lot of Bruce Willis in movies, and still to this day, I don't really recognise his voice. He's trying too hard to have a high voice, and sure, on certain words, he lets slip, and you can hear its him. But it just doesn't sound like him.

This is a terrific film, to watch as a youngster, and as an adult, and be able to appreciate the sexual chemistry between John & Kirstie. It's funny, and although, the sequels aren't as good, when are they? I just have to get the second one on DVD now!

Strange Wilderness (2008)

Strange Wilderness***1/2

"Strange Wilderness" is a good-natured, frequently hilarious takeoff on all those nature documentaries that play on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, and whose pedigree stretches all the way back to the granddaddy of them all, "Mutual of Omaha`s Wild Kingdom." Peter and Fred are the producers of a wildlife series entitled "Strange Wilderness" that has been foundering in the ratings ever since Peter's father, a Steve Irwin-type naturist and the original host of the show, passed away, leaving his less-than-stellar son to carry on his legacy. The sheer scientific illiteracy of much of the commentary that Peter provides for his footage probably hasn't helped matters much in this regard. Now faced with the prospect of series cancellation, Peter and his crew of incompetent dweebs head off to the wilds of South America to file an exclusive report on the famed Bigfoot who has recently been spotted there.

Though adolescent in the extreme, "Strange Wilderness" turns out to be a zany, endearingly random and unflaggingly energetic little comedy whose likable cast is obviously dialed into what the moviemakers are trying to do here. Steve Zahn, Allen Covert, Covert, Ernest Borgnine, Jeff Garlin, Kevin Heffernan, Justin Long and Harry Hamlin seem to be having the time of their lives here and their enjoyment rubs off on us as well.

Is it dumb? Of course it is. Is it lowbrow, inane and hopelessly juvenile? You betcha'. But unlike so many other films that fall into those categories, "Strange Wilderness" has a shrewd mind for parody and a liveliness of spirit that actually make the movie funny. Credit scenarist Peter Gaulke and co-author/director Fred Wolf (who first developed this concept as sketches on "Saturday Night Live") for some excellent joke-writing and pacing and for their willingness to pull out all the stops in their effort to get the laugh. In fact, the crew's ill-fated encounter with Bigfoot is alone worth the price of admission.

This is the all time funniest movie I have ever seen, hands down, bar none, the funniest. I have never laughed so hard or so much during a movie. I don't own many DVDs of movies. I own this one. If you live in a place where it's legal to do so, medicate yourself and your friends and watch this... you don't have to medicate, but it is a stoner movie, so it just adds that little bit of spice to it.... that's not why it's funny though. It is ridiculously funny because of the dialog and situations, the characters... the whole thing is just A++.

If you are a tight a$$ boring old coot, this movie isn't for you... if you like Adam Sandler movies, WATCH THIS!!! Five Frikkin Stars!!

Very possibly the funniest movie ever made, hilarious laugh out loud moments throughout right until the very end. My only advice: definitely smoke a bone prior to watching. Kick it up a notch.

Cat Run (2011)

Cat RunI did not think this movie would be as good as it was. The characters were very good actors and believable for the most. I will say to stay away from this movie if you are offended by nudity as there is full frontal nudity within the first 10 minutes.

Very much a "R" rated movie Very entertaining, Good story, Very very funny. I have watched it several times now.

This movie has a Gotcha vibe but much darker.

If you like movies that are part dark comedy and part action you will like this. It has a feel that it could really happen considering how some politics are done.

The actors are great, casting was spot on.

The extras were a little lacking but overall a must see.

Whew! OK, it begins with a plethora of gratuitous nudity, and the characters have to be introduced with profiles, I guess so we can keep track. A whole lot of gratuitous violence and killing follows. Then, it has its comedic moments, and the whole picture starts making sense after about an hour. If one is patient enough, there's a really great movie here. Good guys are bad, bad guys are good. Remember, this movie requires patience--unless one's in it for the nudity and violence.

Very funny movie mish mash of multiple genres into one fun ride! Janet McTeer's performance is unforgettable. Tony Curran plays a great villain; Paz Vega... well... she's a killer. Scott & Alphonso make a very funny duo.

Weekend at Bernie's

Weekend at Bernie'sI gave this film 5 stars because it is one of those rare movies that made me laugh out loud! This is a very dark comedy about 2 idiots who find their boss dead and convince hundreds of gullible people that he is actually alive. They walk him around a resort, go boating with his remains, have parties. They even convince the hitman who killed Bernie that he's still alive! So, you guessed it, the hitman tries and tries again to "kill" Bernie. The physical humor is absolutely the best. It's a unique concept. I guarantee that you will laugh until you hurt. It's totally 80's with a great theme song sung by Jermaine Stewart. Highly recommended.

The cast is perfect and the sets, music, and all that went into this movie seem to meld to make a very funny movie. Andrew McCarthy as Larry Wilson and Jonathan Silverman as Richard Parker are a good match for co-workers at an insurance company. Larry the brown nosing party man and Richard the hard working nerd. When Richard discovers a two million dollar mistake in claims their boss Bernie invites them over for the weekend to discuss it. What happens after that is sick, demented, and funny. Any fan of "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" and "The Whole Nine Yards" should enjoy it. This is one of those rare movies were seeing a dead person being lugged around, beat up, dropped, bareface ski, washed around in the tide, shot, strangled, and more is just plain outrageously funny.

Buy Weekend at Bernie's Now

This is a great film to make you laugh. Just old fashioned humor, I laughed from start to finish. The corps [bernie] is great and the two guys on holiday for the weekend have unfortunatley fallen into a difficult situation and try hard to get out of it, with many histerical idea's. Certainly a film to cheer you up on a cold dark evening, my sides ached after watching it.

Fantastic film that i first saw when i was little and i like it still. Amazing black humour, nice and relaxing comedy. After 20 years is still funny: funny actors, funny scenario and just 5 stars.

Terry Kiser is a blast to watch as "deadbeat" boss Bernie, whose former employees -Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy -find themselves dragging him with them for an entire weekend. Don Galfa also is a treat as the hitman who makes the unusual weekend possible.

The biggest problem here is that, in order to truly enjoy the movie, you have to buy into the premise that virtually everybody on the island is completely braindead: McCarthy, who has fun beating the dead man in cards; Silverman, who can't get past constantly lying to his love interest; Bernie's mistress, who still thinks he's alive AFTER a night of passion; and an island full of people, who somehow miss the odor of a rotting corpse in their midst.

Yes, this is a fun movie to watch. Just don't engage your brain or you'll miss out on the party.

Better Off Dead (1985)

Better Off DeadIt's finally here, and although it doesn't cost $2.00, it's better than nothing (if you caught that reference, you're a fan and will buy it now).

I won't go into plot and such you already know about the movie's merits (or can find them online easily). This review will concern the region 1 (USA) DVD release that came out 7/16/02 at long last! retail around $20-25 USD.

One note: I had trouble finding this on release day the local "big box" boys all told me they had "a copy on order or something"... I guess they didn't anticipate a big demand for this wildy funny 1985 cult comedy.

DVD Special Features: Widescreen enhanced for 16:9, English Subtitle Option, Dolby Digital & "English Stereo" (whatever that means). No foreign language tracks, outtakes or even a trailer. No stills of the cast or bios.... nada. Zip. Zero.

Initial Impressions: This DVD is truly a bare-bones production from start to finish. I actually thought the audio track was absent at first, due to the lack of any sound at all until the movie proper starts. And of course you can't skip over the annoying studio splash or the stern warning not to copy it. At least there's no ads or previews in front like some.

Menu Options: The menu page is a static photo with three options Play, Setup and Scene Selection. Setup lets you pick from "Subtitle: English or None". That's it. No other setup options... it looks like you could change Audio Indicator to other foreign languages, but that option does not highlight. Maybe they forgot to add foreign language tracks or the coder forgot to link up to the function.

Video: I played this on two different TV/DVD setups one highend and one old/low end. The Widescreen refused to work on my lowend set, but worked fine on the new DVD player. However, both sets showed the film to be overly bright and rather soft, especially in outdoor scenes. Even inside, there were no good strong blacks to be seen. The print itself seemed rather clean, with no spots or distortions immediately visible. Overall, it looked like a moderate home-transfer job of a videotape via a DVD burner... barely better than my vhs. Such a shame.

Audio: Nothing special, just good old Dolby. Not that surround would do much with this movie, but still.. blah.

Extras: none. I suspect if they could have had "less than none" they would have. Truly a poor showing for this classic comedy.

Summary: Although "gotta have it" fans like myself are happy to have a DVD at last, this shoddy transfer and lack of features makes me a bit ticked at whomever decided to jam it to us fans and charge "normal" dvd prices. It would have been much more accurately priced as a budget dvd in the 12.99 range after all this time... surely the production costs have been paid for many times over.

Other: The VHS (20th Cent.Fox) edition indicates 98 minutes, the DVD says 97 minutes... reason not apparent. Also, the keepcase coverart is truly dreadfulwhomever created this case cover needs some more photoshop lessons pronto!

5 stars for the original movie, 3 stars for this lackluster DVD edition.

As the years go by, I find myself growing more and more convinced that the '80s were the last true golden age for that often-maligned genre, the teen sex comedy. Whereas now Hollywood shells out a small fortune to finance a Britney Spears soundtrack for films starring young men who make Frankie Avalon look complex (and featuring actresses who seem to have copied Annette Funnicello's bust but none of her own admitedly simple charm), the '80s were usually made with low budgets, up-and-coming young actors who at least seemed to be having fun, scripts that were too joyfully crude to ever be considered truly offensive, and directors who seem to have vanished at the decade's in. My own personal favorite amongst these directors was "Savage" Steve Holland (Is that a perfect '80s name or what?) who defined the entire decade with just two films -One Crazy Summer and especially Better Off Dead. Both of these films display Holland's crazed, gloriously strange wit, his penchant for casting Curtis Armstrong as a high school students (despite the fact that Armstrong appeared to be in his 30s at the time), his fondness for the random nonsensical cartoon, and especially his early foresight to make John Cusack his favored star.

In Better Off Dead, Cusack plays a likeable but nerdy high school schlub. Of course, all teen films claim to be about likeable schlubs but Cusack was one of the few actors who was actually believable as being both likeable and socially unpopular. He's dumped by his girlfriend, decides to beat her new boyfriend in a ski competition, attempts suicide a few times -in a bit that everyone seems to hold as their personal favorite -has to deal with a homicidal paper boy who wants his two dollars. Its a crazed plot and Holland doesn't waste much time trying to make it all coherent. Instead, he uses the plot as an excuse to pile on more and more strange sight gags and bizarre characters. In short, rather than pretending his story is some sort of grand artistic statement (like the current crop of youth films), Holland creates his own demented world -a world where high school students are sent into almost religious ecstacy when their math teacer assigns them 200 pages of homework (their sincerely joyful reaction is my own personal favorite of the film's many out-there moments) and even a cartoon comes to life and asks permission to date Cusack's ex. Its a world where one of my favorite, unjustly unknown actresses of that era -the sweetly pretty Diana Franklin -shows up as a French exchange student who offers Cusack a chance at true romance if only he can survive a "fencing" match with an even more nerdy suitor. Its a world where a Japanese exchange student does a perfect imitation of Howard Cosell. In short, its a world that could only have been created in the freedom-loving days of the 1980s and John Cusack becomes the perfect everyman to lead us through that world. There are so many hilarious lines in Better off Dead and it seems everyone has their own personal favorite ("Its a shame people be throwing out a perfectly good white boy like that" comes up a lot though Armstrong shouting "Can you imagine the street value of this" as he snorts up a line of white snow is my own choice). What is truly amazing is that for a film that was dismissed when it originally opened, Better off Dead seems to have become the personal "cult" film of just about everyone who went to high school during the 1980s.

Cusack is one of the best actors working today but, for many of his long-time fans, his recent work has been a bit disappointing. Since renouncing the whole teen film thing, some of Cusack's performances have -on occasion -seemed to be a case of an actor taking himself too seriously. Even if the films did little for his career, Cusack seemed to, at least, be having fun in films like Better off Dead -a quality that sometimes appears to missing from his "mature" work. Of course, everyone in Better Off Dead seems to be having fun. Its a fun, genuinely goon natured film and this is why -despite being dismissed by snobs over the years -it retains such a strong following. Whenever I see a commercial for yet another film featuring Freddie Prinze, Jr. doing his "soulful" thing while the Backstreet Boys parade in the background, I think of Better Off Dead and its missing director. Come back, Savage Steve and -whatever you have to do -bring John Cusack with you. We all deserve to have a little fun again.

I don't know what people were expecting to see or hear with Better Off Dead on blu-ray. High definition does not translate to a miraculous transformation. It simply allows you to experience more closely what the source elements have to offer. In the case of Better Off Dead, it had a very low budget and was made very quickly. The filmmakers weren't concerned with how great the shots could be artistically, since it's a screwball comedy for teenagers. The low quality 80's film stock that was used wasn't great with detail, depth, or color, and was quite unstable. The film's soundtrack, which was originally in mono, was created with basic sound effects and design, because that's all the budget allowed for. The film will never look amazing no matter how much restoration is done to it and it'll never sound amazing unless an entirely new sound mix with new sound effects is created. It is a product of its low budget source limitations and unless you accept that fact, you will be greatly disappointed.

On the positive side, the print is clean and full of natural film grain. It's the best I've ever seen it look. The sound is exactly as it has always been, thin, lifeless and limited in range, though dialogue is always intelligible. The downside of this release is there are no special features. No retrospective, or appreciation, or commentary. I'm not surprised considering how limited the fan base is for the film.

This is the best presentation of Better Off Dead to date and I'm sure it could never be much better than it is on blu-ray. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

First off I have seen this movie quiet a few times, and it is a great flick, but when they made the DVD I had to have it. Well I am sorely disappointed in the quality of the sound. It doesn't have either Dolby Digital or DTS. I have movies that have both, ad sound great. This sounds like a muffled person.

First off, you have to see this movie. Although it would get awards for being extremely cheezy... it's quite humorous. If you want a movie review, read the excellent posts by Jeffrey Ellis or Joshua Lai.

Second, my low rating is based on the actual DVD. I waited, and waited, and waited for this movie to come out on DVD. Considering DVDs have been around more than 5 years already, I'm truly amazed that companies still put out VHS quality works in DVD format. I could have sworn I was watching a videotape (on my HD monitor with progressive scan player). Unless you are a Better Off Dead nut like myself, wait until the studio releases a Collector's edition or Special editor before spending your money on this DVD.
