Camp Nowhere

Camp NowhereI have been reading the reviews, most of which are obviously written by teenagers or preteens.

My husband, also 30something, tuned into this on cable the other night. and we both sat and watched the whole thing. It's "Lord of the flies" set in modern day, but much more fun to watch.

Christopher Lloyd, best known as "Reverend Jim" on t.v. show Taxi, and "Doc Brown" in the Back to the Future movies is the only known star that shows up in most of the movie. He plays the authority figure throughout the film when the parents' aren't.

It's a "let's see how much we can get away with while the parents aren't looking" movie. and I have to admit, it was pretty cool..Both my husband and i were thinking: That is cool..I wish I could've done that. It's a fantasy for younger teens. Basically, some rich kids pool all their summer camp money together and create their own fantasy camp and their parents think that they are all at the camps they were originally supposed to go to for the summer: fat camp, computer camp, drama camp.. instead, it's just 'HAVE FUN ALL SUMMER camp..OR Camp Nowhere at some run down land that Lloyds' character finds.

The teens all come together and help Lloyd from going to jail.

It's a cute little film that certainly isn't one of the most classic of the teen genre, but certainly is entertaining enough.

A lot of silliness goes on, and eventually chaos!!! the parents want parents day..of course, they have to get caught eventually, right?

check it out...

This movie is great. It is very hilarious and well worth your time. It is almost a five-star movie in my opinion, but I can't give it more than four because some of the scenes are just plain corny and/or ridiculous. And yes, as one reviewer mentioned, the parents are represented wrongly, in that they never suspected anything, which does not seem real.

On the other hand, that same reviewer mentioned that he did not finish watching this movie because of cursing. I seriously do not know what he is talking about. I only remember very occaisional and rather mild swearing.

All in all, this is a great movie that is definitely worth watching more than once. I definitely recommend at least renting it, if not buying it.

I recently rented Camp Nowhere. Best movie I have seen in my life. It is SO funny. It is all about this group of four teens {two girls, two boys} whos parents are making them go to summer camps in which they do not want to go. They find Dennis Van Wilker {Christopher Lloyd} and they scam thir parents into this camp. Along with many other kids, all summer this "camp" which is really just a big party, goes great. In August, all the parents want a Parents Day, so they pull of "the GREATEST scam of all time" At the end, the truth is revealed, nothing bad happens. The whole movie, Mudd and Gabby have a little crush going on and wont admit it to each other but at the end Mudd and Gabby have a nice wet kiss.

CAMP NOWHERE has been one of my favorite flicks for a long time. I just saw this flick again for a second time on TV today. Although I'm 17 years old, I still find this movie very enjoyable. It's about this geeky kid named Mudd (Jonathan Jackson) and three other kids (including Andrew Keegan), who come up with a plan to make their summer vacation the most fun vacation they've ever had by creating their own camp called Camp Nowhere, with the help of an ex-drama teacher named Dennis (Christopher Lloyd). The camp was just supposed to be for the four of them, but then a bunch of other kids find out about the camp and they end up going to the camp, too! It's a wild and crazy summer for the kids with no rules or responsible adults. The kids get to do whatever they want, while their parents think they are away at computer camp, weight-loss camp, military camp, or drama camp! And of course, they've got megabucks to spend on whatever they want from the money their parents paid for the camps. But then their parents come for parents' day and they have to prove to them that they are really at the camps their parents thought they were!

This movie is very hilarious and fun to watch with your friends. You can watch it over and over again without ever getting tired of it. With an allstar cast including Jonathan Jackson, Andrew Keegan, and Christopher Lloyd and a great script, how could you go wrong? If you haven't seen CAMP NOWHERE, I definitely recommend that you do. You must buy this movie 'cause it's da bomb! And Jonathan Jackson is really cute in this movie, too!:-)

This movie was the reason I joined up with Amazon, thus, as everyone can guess, it can't be bad. Right? Right!

Let's start with the movie: it's very amusing. While there are only very few truly funny scenes (most notably the car wash scene with Cristopher Lloyd), the whole movie is lighhearted and easy going, with nice characters with whom you can identify. And altough there are a bunch of them the most important are 5: Mud, Gaby, Trish and Zach the 4 main kids who originate the camp idea and the adult they blackmail into helping them, Dennis. All have their quirks, all come to terms with them. And some come together in the process, which you, as the viewer, will if not love, then atleast like a lot. All in all I can say this is one decent family movie, which both the kids and the adults ought to like.

In other words highly recommended!

Lets go to the next part the packaging. While the extra features are few (Spanish audiotrack + chapter menu) the enhanced 16:9 transfer is excellent. You'll probably enjoy it even on a computer, as the final resolution is big enough for even 19" monitors. The sound... well, this is the only detail I can complain about the package carries a "Dolby Digital Surround Sound" notice, which ain't true both audiotracks, while in Dolby's format, are only stereo. But as this ain't really a movie where you can do much with surround sound then this shouldn't be a reason why to skip this release. Besides the number of channels audio is fine.

So, to take it all together: very nice movie with very good picture and more than decent audio. And while there are practically no extras it's no reason why your family shouldn't own a copy of this DVD.

Soul Men (2008)

Soul Men"Soul Men," a 2008 release, is a musical comedy road picture, with a template of sadness behind it. It stars more frequent action hero, Samuel L. Jackson, and the late Bernie Mac. It was written by Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone, and directed by Malcolm Lee, noted American filmmaker Spike Lee's kid brother. Jackson plays Louis Hinds; Mac, Floyd Henderson. Together, they were once "The Real Deal," popular soul singers, and released a single record album. But it's been decades since they were together. Then the death of the supposedly legendary Marcus Hooks (John Legend), once their lead singer, gives them a very good reason to reunite: there's to be a memorial concert at New York's famous Apollo Theater, at which they've been invited to sing. It might just jump start their fallow singing careers.

So, quick as you can say Jackie Robinson, it becomes a road picture, as the quarreling ex-colleagues jump into a Cadillac in California, with four days to reach New York. There is lots of grumbling and fighting, and, be warned if it bothers you, a great deal of obscene language: with m-----f----in almost every scene. Along the road, they will bump up against Rosalee, played by Jennifer Coolidge, in a distasteful sexist interlude that I could have done without. Also Cleo (Sharon Leal, Dreamgirls ), who is supposedly the daughter of one of the leads; they're initially not sure which; Lester (Affion Crockett), Cleo's none too bright, abusive boyfriend; Danny Epstein (Sean Hayes), their new manager, and Philip, (Adam Herschman), Epstein's gofer. Towards the end of the picture we meet the late great funk/soul musician Isaac Hayes, playing himself.

Hayes is very visibly ill and weak he is used to do little more than walk across the screen. And I wish the producers had spent more money on the actors playing Philip (Herschman) and Cleo (Leal): they appear in many scenes, and granted, Leal is certainly pretty enough and sings very well; but they don't bring much to the screen.

However, the charismatic leads do bring a lot to their parts. Their comic timing is spot-on; Jackson's a good straight man, yet he can both pitch and catch: go know. The singing is fine, and the movie boasts a nice sound track of 1970's funk/soul hits. All in all, it's an enjoyable film. And, while it is the last film appearance of Mac and Hayes, I can recommend it as worth seeing for more than curiosity. Nevertheless, at film's post script, as the final credits roll, the interviews with Mac and Hayes are likely to bring tears to your eyes: they did to mine.

What can I say but simply Hilarious! These two guys put together was just perfect! There was never a dull moment with them! I've always loved Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac (Bernie is missed greatly!) this movie never made alot of attention but it should have cause this is one of the best comedy movies I've seen in a long time!

This movie is so funny that it had me and my family crying

from laughter, holding onto our sides and rocking

back & forth in our chairs!

This is a fitting tribute to the comic genius of the

late great Bernie Mac, who had such chrisma and that good ol'

down home humor like a crazy uncle who always comes to the

family reunions and lights it up!

He's in great form here and it seems to me, a bit reflective,

as if he knew that this would be his last statement to the world!

If you watch the special features, you'll see what I mean.

Samuel Jackson plays the grizzled world-weary sidekick with finesse!

He and Mac shared a great chemistry and comraderie and boy, it shows!

The supporting cast all pulled their weight too and delivered

funny moments as well. Also, this movie was the swan song for

one of the latter 20th Century's great musical minds...

The Black Moses...Issac Hayes!!

In the late 60's thru early 70's, he was a musical & cultural

force to be reckoned with!--Later he proved himself to be

a good actor, and of course the younger generations knew him

as the voice of "Chef" from the now iconic "Southpark".

It's uncanny that both he and Bernie Mac passed away right

after this movie was finished, on the exact same weekend!

Well, if ever there was a time capsule for these two..here it is!

Hayes' music is featured throughout as well.

This is definitely one to add to your collection.

RIP BERNIE MAC (1957-2008) and Issac Hayes (1942-2008)

I was kind of skeptical about seeing this movie because usually when an actor or comic passes on their last movie is questionable but Soul Men is one of the few exceptions.

The story chronicles Lewis Hinds(Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson(Bernie Mac)two members of the group "Real Deal". Floyd pays a visit to Lewis after the death of a soul singer legend Marcus Hooks(played by John Legend) to perform at an event at the Apollo because they believe they can get paid. Lewis is still bitter with Floyd about an incident involving his former wife. They reluctantly team up and go performing state to state before they reach the Apollo.

I wont say that I always laughed but there are plenty of times where I laughed especially with the interaction between Bernie Mac's character and Samuel Jackson's character. Cleo's bumbling, abusive boyfriend Lester(Affion Crockett) had some funny moments too. Both Floyd and Lewis's misadventures are humorous also. There are times when i laughed and times where I smiled. Lewis's interaction with Cleo(played by the attractive Sharon Leal who somewhat resembles Kerry Washington) was sweet. The songs Lewis and Floyd sung were cool and they seem to have a ball performing them and not phoning in their performances(like some entertainers tend to do). Its a shame that Bernie Mac passed before the release of this film. He would have been proud of the final product because the movie was pretty good.

REST IN PEACE BERNIE MAC, ISAAC HAYES and RUDY RAY MOORE!!!

Want Soul Men (2008) Discount?

I'm a huge fan of Bernie Mac and this has got to be his best work ever! This movie is what you would call a real laugh out loud till your sides ache comedy!

Bernice Mac and Samuel L. Jackson are both ex-soul singers who only put out one record back in the seventies and went their separate ways there after. Due to the death of their previous lead singer they are asked to perform at his funeral and are therefore asked to reunite, even though they are not on the best of terms.

Even though I really enjoyed this movie greatly, I must warn everyone there is a considerable amount of adult scenes in the movie and a prolific use of abusive language (m*****f***er) in almost every scene... I think they would have even worked that word into the title if they could!

The movie does a great 70's soundtrack which I really enjoyed especially the one when they first hit the road!

A great comedy, there is not denying that at all, but it could have done with less obscenity!

V.I. Warshawski (1991)

V.I. WarshawskiThis review is short and sweet and has to to do with the quality of the blu-ray treatment or lack there-of. Sadly most reviews seen at the Amazon forum are about the movie's story and rarely about the disc quality itself. Countless takes on the story with everyone having their own opinion. But lets face it, its truly in the eye of the beholder and not left to others to decide how good a movie is.

Now about the quality of this Blu-ray disc. be warned it's atrocious thus the 1 star rating. Not for the movie since I just loved Kathleen Turner in this title. In my humble opnion she was at her sexiest and at her peak in looks. Its not a great movie but totally acceptable because of Kathleen's presence. The classic film goddess comes to mind. Any way I had the first standard dvd offered and decided to upgrade for a better picture to Blu-ray. Well it appears sharper but odd that the same white specs and garbage that littered the DVD version is very much apparent here,.. and even in the same places as that earlier version. I do know a little about compression and know that it is possible to re-process the same mpeg2 files used for the first DVD release to a larger different compression scheme such as the 1080p format. The quality would not improve but you can do it. Not saying they did that but it sure appears that way from the print used here. Its identical and since it is highly unlikely for these white specs to repeat themselves exactly where they appeared before on the first issue of the standard DVD. Very sad they didn't use a much better print this time around or just use a print period intead of re-processing the earlier files. Again just my observation here on this Blu-ray treatment of this title. In my opinion not worth upgrading to, since the overall appearance of this movie will just leave you highly disappointed in how some of these companies view the buying public.

V.I. Warshawski is a dated picture. It come from a time when being coarse and raw was "new." But in this case it works because the raw and coarse woman is interesting. A private eye more interested in a case than in the bucks it can bring her. A woman who lives life on her own terms. A woman who accepts her femininity without letting it limit her. Kathleen Turner is perfect for this role.

The story is nothing new, but does have its own spin. More important are the characters, the way they are revealed, and the growth they display over the course of the story.

V.I. Warshawski is one of several movies that have been released in low-priced Blu Rays where the only "feature" is the feature. Small films that otherwise might be missed. Good entertainment for the money. As such V.I. Warshawski, in the eyes of this film lover, works just fine.

Buy V.I. Warshawski (1991) Now

This likeable, harmless Kathleen Turner vehicle is one of those films that most "name" critics have viciously attacked for no logical reasons (critics seem to be as frequently susceptible amongst themselves to "herd mentality" as the rest of us po' ignorant movin' pitcher watchin' folk). Turner's "V.I. Warshawski" is a very credible "tough broad" character, treading the fine line between sexiness and surliness with skill and style. Granted, the predictable, standard-issue plot of this detective thriller is a minus, but the appealing cast and Turner's charisma carry the day. If you are a fan of the Warshawski books (or J.A. Jance and Sue Grafton's female detective stories)you'll find the mood and atmosphere of the film quite true to the genre. If your name is Leonard Maltin, take a pill and just relax.

I love this movie and when I saw it on Blu-ray for 4.99 I figured what the heck I'd upgrade from my DVD to the Blu-ray version. I never knew you could downgrade with a Blu-ray. My DVD offers more than this does including better sound and closed captioning. I had not read the reviews before ordering; I wish I had done so otherwise I would not have gotten this. In this day and age I would think that closed captioning would be standard.

The movie itself is great. No, it would never win an Oscar but it is great mindless fun that can be enjoyed at any time. The actors are great in it and I always enjoy Charles Durning who is perfect as the police detective.

What To Expect When You're Expecting (2012)

What To Expect When You're ExpectingThis is hilarious! After having one kid and with another on the way I can say that this movie is right on the money. They were somehow able to capture the funny and sometimes disgusting aspects of pregnancy without cheapening the miracle of having a baby. They show Cameron Diaz as the celebrity pregnancy, Jennifer Lopez vying for adoption, Brooklyn Decker as the trophy wife having twins, Anna Kendrick "Rosie" as the one night stand, and Elizabeth Banks with the super-planned pregnancy. When I first saw the trailer for the movie I laughed until I cried, and now having seen the movie, I am not disappointed. P.S. It's a husband friendly movie mine sure enjoyed it.

This is an okay movie and has a few laughs but nothing to write home about. If you're bored with nothing else to watch then go for it but, otherwise, I wouldn't waste my money renting it.

"I just wanted the glow. The one that they promise you on the cover of those magazines. Well, I'm calling it pregnancy sucks. Making a human being is really hard. I have no control over my body or my emotions." This is a movie based off the famous book and deals with five different couples and how they handle pregnancy ranging from problems trying to adopt to having a sickeningly easy time giving birth. This is yet another movie dealing with many different couples and relationship problems but this is one of the better ones. I have said before that I am not really a fan of this type of genre but I really enjoyed this movie and laughed throughout. It may be because I have a kid and went through the whole pregnancy thing with my wife but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. I am also really shocked at my favorite movies of the last few weeks. I have really enjoyed "Think Like A Man" and "Five-Year Engagement" and once again I think this "chick-flick" is the best movie of the week. I am not sure what that says about me but there are some really funny parts in this and if you are a woman do not be afraid about bringing this home to your man, he may throw a fit at first but the comedy (and Cameron Diaz's opening dance scene) will keep him watching and he will also enjoy it. I know I did...the dance was amazing though. Overall, a surprisingly funny movie that really won me over and I thought that was great. I (again surprisingly) give this an A.

There were a few funny moments, but they certainly do not warrant the purchase of this movie. If you are even considering watching it, wait until it comes to Prime.

Men in Black 3 (Three Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (2012)

Men in Black 3I get out to the theater to see a movie about once per year; I'm now a slave to the Blu Ray home entertainment era. However, I did something this Memorial Day weekend that I haven't done in over 20 years: I went to the theater twice in 2 days (with my kids) to see The Avengers and Men in Black III. And neither of the movies let me down; both were excellent.

While The Avengers is getting high marks from the critics, I am very surprised by the so-so reviews that MiB III is getting. I'm glad that I went to the theater, because the abundance of "just average" reviews might have even deterred me from putting MiB III in my rental queue. I'm here to say don't be deterred.

MiB III was almost as good as the original MiB (and the original MiB was classic), and MiB III was better than MiB II...wayyyy better. The best part for young audiences that may not have seen the predecessors from 15 years and 10 years ago respectively, is that MiB III stands alone as a great movie....There's no need to have had to have seen either of the first two in order to fully enjoy MiB III. Although it does help mainly to see how effectively awesome Josh Brolin is at capturing the essence of Agent K that we all know as Tommy Lee Jones; and I suppose that it also helps to establish the dynamic of the bond between Agent K and Agent J (Will Smith).

So MiB III is a fun blast from the past...or should I say blast into the past. In 1969 Agent K maims, arrests and has bad guy Boris the Animal thrown into an intergalactic maximum security prison...on the moon. But 43 years apparently gave Boris a long enough time to figure out how to escape. But escaping is not all that's on Boris' mind; he jumps back in time to 1969 to change history and murder Agent K. So when he succeeds it's up to Agent J (Will Smith) to jump back a little further in time to stop Boris.

As I mentioned earlier, Josh Brolin really makes you believe that you're seeing a young Tommy Lee Jones, or should I say young Agent K. The personality differences and dialogue between Brolin and Smith are amusing to watch, and some of Smith's scenes with and without Brolin are out-and-out hilarious.

Comedy Writer Etan Cohen (not to be confused with popular Writer/Director Ethan Coen) teams up with MiB veteran Director Barry Sonnenfeld to deliver a movie that's funny, witty and fun for the whole family. At a run time of just over 90 minutes I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

So do indeed get out to see Men in Black III; at minimum get it into your viewing queue. For me, it will be preordered, viewed again on Blu Ray, and sit in my collection next to MiB I & II.

After the apocalypse of Independence Day and the epics of Star Wars and Star Trek, the sci-fi field was ripe for a spoof. Men in Black was the DEFINITIVE spoof of the sci-fi genre when it came out, an entertaining balance of light-hearted drama, action, and wacky comedy. The sequel...wasn't quite on the same level of film-making, lacking a smart script, and showing just what happens when Sonnenfeld gets carried away with drenching his stars in colored goo. And now act three rolls out and we have...

"I promised the secrets of the universe, nothing more."

After the insanity of the previous two Men in Black movies, everything moves in a different direction this time around...fourth dimensionally. When I heard that this movie would be all about time travel, and when I heard that the script was generated in a huge rush so that they could get the movie out on time, I expected the worst. I was VERY pleasantly surprised this time around. The basic plot revolves around an evil alien who sets out for vengeance on K using time travel to erase him, so that he simultaneously kills his nemesis and sets in motion the destruction of Earth in the present. A simple premise, but the execution of said premise SHINES.

"Here, take this, and all you have to do is jump."

From the get-go this movie has fun with all the old and new sci-fi tropes. J has to time jump by literally jumping off a building (Girl Who Leapt Through Time anyone?) in a great super-cartoony CGI sequence that I'm SURE would have been awesome to see in 3D. When he actually gets to 1969 there's everything from a GIANT neutralizer that doesn't quite look safe, to new gadgets that result in some awesome action sequences (unicycle speeders and rocket packs). And naturally all the typical 1960's stereotypes are toyed and joked with, but in most cases this is very well done, while at the same time giving us subtle clues into the nature of K and his relationships through a new perspective.

"I am getting too old for this. I can only imagine how YOU feel."

It cannot be overstated how PERFECT Josh Brolin is as young K. He manages to be super-serious in that Jack Webb style while simultaneous displaying the same chemistry with Will Smith's agent K. He delivers his lines with perfect comic timing, and gives his character a lot of heart. Will Smith might be sleep-walking through the role, but he's got some GREAT lines this time around, and it's obvious he's having a great time with the role. The rest of the cast likewise does a great job with their roles, and keeps things light-hearted and fun (with only a few dead gags here and there).

"Do you know what is the most destructive power in the universe?" "Sugar?"

This movie is big, bright, and beautiful. It was clearly designed to be viewed in IMAX 3D and it shows. Everything is just so vivid and well-framed, and crystal clear. It really makes a nice change from the very darkly lit and darkly framed films that have been popular the past few years. And as my wife commented to me right after the movie finished, most movies are SUPPOSED to be fun, light, and leave you feeling good when you exit the theater. They are supposed to ENTERTAIN you (at least that's the lesson I got from Sullivan's Travels, your mileage may vary). There's room for every kind of movie, but this kind does what movies were meant to do in the first place. MIBIII is FUN, and it has a lot of heart. The end of the movie really and truly surprised me. The climax of the time travel plot results in a plot revelation that was not only NOT stupid, but actually was heart-warming (giving you a HUGE character development twist on K that I never saw coming). That's just plain good film making. Not to mention awesome little surprises that are purely the result of good writing (an accidental time jump turning the tables on a one-sided fight) and excellent direction.

"You got some city miles on you."

Some people might start watching this movie feeling like I did, that the franchise was really looking like it was running out of gas. I was thrilled to find that MIBIII is now my favorite film the series. It's a great comedy with wonderful comic timing, a great adventure with lots of great action sequences, and its got more character, charm, and heart than anything else in the series yet. I will definitely buy it when it comes out on Blu-Ray and would recommend any fans of the series do the same.

I admit that the first 10 15 minutes didn't feel right. But even though it started slow the story and the laughs continued to build. After the first 30 minutes I felt safe that I made a wise choice to buy this movie instead of renting it.

I liked the first MIB. I absolutely hated MIB2..hated MIB2. I was alittle scared about this one but after watching it once I liked it enough to watch it a second time. The more I watched it the more I liked it. I now think it is definitely the best of the three and it is easily a good buy.

If you are still not sure about this movie then rent it first. If you are reading this review then you at least have some interest in this movie. If so then risk a dollar or two to rent it from amazon or redbox....and make sure you watch at least the first 40 minutes. I don't want to give anything away but since the cover shows a younger "k" (Josh Brolin) then you need to watch until you see him in the movie. I don't think I am giving away any spoiler. It really gets good from this point on ... the chemistry between Will Smith and Josh Brolin is excellent.

It is easy to give this 5 stars and super easy to recommend as a rental to those that are cautious and a buy to those who liked the original and was hoping for something close.

MIB 3 is as funny as it is fun. The natural chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones is spectacular. Jones (K) is so laconic, that he is the perfect foil for Smith (J), talkative, observant, hilarious. I don't know how Tommy Lee Jones kept a deadpan face during scenes; there must have been a lot of out-takes. Also, full marks to "the young agent K", an astounding performance. MIB 3 focuses on the relationship between the two agents, with a hair-raising back story, and the payoff is sublime.

Unless somebody spoils the ending, you won't see the finale twist coming.

The Ugly Truth"The Ugly Truth" represents something I never thought I'd see: A romantic comedy that both women and men will appreciate. Granted, it probably won't be for the same reasons. Women will like it because underneath it all, it's a fairly typical romantic comedy, the story of Girl Hates Boy, Boy Hates Girl, Boy and Girl Fall in Love Anyway. Men will like it because one of the main characters expresses much of what they think and feel on a daily basis. Everyone will like it because the story is engaging and the characters are not mere cardboard caricatures. You can actually invest in them, and you're able to care about what's going on. What could easily have been a routine date night movie is instead a surprisingly good movie that need not wait until date night. It's also genuinely funny--a bit raunchy, yes, but funny just the same.

Much of the film's success is due to the wonderful onscreen chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. They continuously make us laugh, yet the comedy is not so broad that you can't believe them in their roles. They make a point of interacting with one another, not as comic relief but as real people. Heigl plays Abby Richter, the romantically challenged, neurotic, controlling producer of a failing Sacramento morning talk show. Butler plays Mike Chadaway, the chauvinistic host of a public access relationship program called "The Ugly Truth." He's unapologetically tell-it-like-it-is in matters of men and women. There's no such thing, he claims, as a sensitive, nurturing man who wants to connect at an emotional level. Men just want sex, plain and simple. And they only want it with attractive women.

Abby, who thinks Mike's rhetoric is appalling, is horrified when she learns that he has been hired to her station in an effort to boost ratings. They clash at every turn ... until he learns that she's interested in dating her next door neighbor--an orthopedic surgeon named Colin (Eric Winter) who just happens to be incredibly handsome. Sensing she's doing everything wrong to initiate a relationship, Mike offers to help Abby by having her test his relationships theories on Colin. She reluctantly agrees, and sure enough, Mike's methods work wonders. She dresses more provocatively. She learns to stop being critical and avoid discussing her personal problems. She learns to be the embodiment of both the saint and the sinner, or as Mike puts it, "The librarian and the stripper."

And that's when things start to get more complex. Abby is succeeding with Colin, but only at the expense of not being herself. On the other hand, could anyone love her as herself? She is, after all, known for bringing background checks and printed topics of conversation to blind dates. As for Mike, he has very definite reasons for believing that loving relationships are a sham. They're gradually revealed not only through carefully structured scenes, but also through Butler, who shows he can find the right balance between smug and sensitive. We see that Mike is the closest thing his young nephew has for a father, and even though he playfully gives the boy relationship advice, he's also quick to remind him that kids should never, ever watch his show.

Heigl also manages a balancing act with her performance, specifically between strength and vulnerability. Abby overachieves at work to compensate for a lack of a love life, which initially seems funny but steadily grows desperate. For reasons she doesn't care to admit to, she's falling in love with Mike, and he too is falling in love with her. But what about Colin? Is he with Abby only because of the façade Mike told her to put up? There's a scene between her and Colin late in the film that directly addresses this issue, and to my delight, it's handled in a way that avoids just about everything that would happen in the average romantic comedy. There are no shouting matches. There are no flying fists. There are no confrontations. There's only a quiet moment of realization that the truth is indeed ugly.

Scenes like these are wonderfully juxtaposed with moments of well written comedy. There are some very amusing moments between Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins as unhappily married news anchors who share the same desk and time slot. The film's single funniest scene takes place in a restaurant and involves Abby, an extremely stimulating pair of underwear, and a control device that ends up in the wrong hands.

I can say with complete honesty (and some embarrassment) that I wasn't expecting such a strong film. I certainly wasn't expecting a strong film belonging to this particular genre. What floors me is that two of the three writers of this film are Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. There are the same two that brought us "The House Bunny," one of the worst films of 2008. They certainly got it right this time around. "The Ugly Truth" is one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a long time, a delightful and absorbing tale about the fronts people display. It's funny without lowering itself to the level of cheap gags, and this is in spite of the film's well-deserved R rating. Heigl and Butler convincingly pull off a romance, no small feat given the contrived nature of these kinds of films. At last, a date movie both the man and the woman can enjoy.

this is a very raunchy right to the point film which is extremely hilarious as long as you have a very open mind and are not at all prudish. gerry and katherine play off each other with great ease and are very comfortable in this very funny sex comedy about how men really think about sex and relationships according to mike, gerrys character, against kathys character, who is a very uptight conventional chick. the film is all about their inevitable clashes against their varied opinions on this topic and how they survive working together on a early morning chat show. i thoroughly recommend this film for an extremely comedic time for both men and women. it is not your usual chick flick and most people will be able to connect with this film and its morales, even though they might not want to admit it.

I really enjoyed this film. Saw it first as a rental and enjoyed it so much I had to buy it. Critics are being very unkind to it and it is ending up on many lists of the worst movies of the year. This really dumfounds me. Out of all the movies out there and all the trash that exists this movie is being picked out as a target. Don't listen to any of them. This sweet, fun comedy is a twist on your standard romantic comedy and is a laugh riot. When I started watching it I thought it was a little crass but I quickly got over that. I was thrilled. A comedy that didn't follow the traditional formula. I found the plot inventive and pretty realistic. Yes, our main character played by Katherine Heigl is beautiful, single and looking for love. But she is looking for Mr. Right and not seeing men for who they really are. She is obsessive, compulsive and definitely speaks her mind. Then we have Gerard Butler who plays a crude man's man with a local cable show who gets a spot on the morning show she produces. He thinks women are looking for fantasies, phony and don't get men at all. And guess what, he speaks his mind as well. The chemistry between Heigl and Butler is hot and steamy from the beginning. Even their true dislike of each other burns up the screen. The way their friendship develops is very believable as he helps her get a man and this film is definitely a twist as he teaches her how to change her ways and why. The sexes are reversed here and I found myself agreeing with a lot of it and laughing hysterically at most of it. The ending was a great pay off and as I said whatever flaws this film has, the chemistry with Heigl and Butler makes up for any of them.

Is this film an intellectual look at relationships that is going to change life as we know it? Is it a film that will change how films and comedies are done for the rest of time? Of course not. This is a highly enjoyable romantic comedy that is inventive over the generic norm and definitely worth your time. And the blu ray version is exsquisite. Colors are vibrant and the clarity is amazing. I love it when the enhancement of blu ray makes even a comedy film levels above its dvd counterpart. So I say look beyond the negative vibe this film is getting. It is very undeserved. Give yourself a treat, especially couples, and get this film.

Great comedy movie. Intended for mature audiences with the sexual nature of its humor. Katherine Heigl plays her dual role as a snobby career driven woman to the temptress.

Stan Helsing (2009)

Stan HelsingStan Helsing is a very funny horror comedy spoof, and I don't really understand why a majority of reviewers obviously don't care for it. Yes, it's stupid but that goes without saying; and, yes, the ending is extremely stupid, but that doesn't take away from all of the good bits leading up to it. I'll take Stan Helsing over any of the brain-dead Scare Movie sequels any day of the week. Stan "It's Stan, not Van" Helsing (Steve Howey) is one of the most likeable underachieving slackers you're likely to run across, his buddy Teddy (Kenan Thompson) is hilarious, and his ex-girlfriend Nadine (Diora Baird) is just plain hot.

It's Halloween, and video store clerk Stan has to drop off some videos at his boss's mother's house before he, Nadine, Teddy, and Teddy's girl Mia (Desi Lydic) an exotic dancer turned masseuse can go to the big Halloween party. Along the way, they encounter one crazy, oftentimes dangerous, and consistently comical obstacle after another. Eventually, they find themselves trapped in Stormy Night Estates, where Stan discovers that he is expected to save the town from the menace of six monsters: Lucky (Chucky), Mason (Jason), Fweddy (Freddy Krueger), Pleatherface (Leatherface), Needlehead (Pinhead), and Michael Criers (Michael Meyers). It turns out that there's some Van Helsing in him, after all.

Interestingly enough, Ken Kirzinger (who played Jason Voorhees in Jason vs. Freddy) plays the part of Mason. You also have Leslie Nielsen playing the part of a waitress, which certainly doesn't take anything away from the comedy of the story. A number of movies are, of course, mocked along the way, and I think the whole concept works quite well. I laughed out loud several times over the course of this movie. I know a lot of people are putting Stan Helsing on their lists of the worst movies ever made, but I hope those who haven't seen it yet will give it a chance. I think it's hilarious.

I believe that this movie was actually entertaining. I took it for what it was and you notice that just by off the cover art of the movie. it was fun and its great to watch with friends if your just looking for some laughs without having a story that has twist and turns to confuse you. i recommend this movie and believe that its worth every penny. Its cheesy and filled with hilarious punch lines that you could joke around with your friends later.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The only things going for this self-proclaimed horror film parody are decent production values and attractive actresses. The movie itself, which is not really a parody of anything but just a limp comedy, is dumb and often dull. The attempts at humor are usually mean-spirited, too, and usually made at the expense of the female characters (who the producers apparently want us to look at but not respect).

Look, to carry over the vulgar parlance of the movie, I'm usually an easy lay with this sort of dumb comedy: I don't need or expect Shakespeare. Just keep things minimally engaging, throw a few chuckles my way, and I'll likely give it three stars and recommend it for some modest home entertainment. Nothing wrong with something silly and fun, after all. But "Stan Helsing" is just boring (the supreme sin of a creative work, in my book) and eye-rollingly stupid. I'm guessing that comedy icon Leslie Nielsen is thankful he was only subjected to a fairly small role in this production.

I'm sorry to say all this, as the actors and folks behind the camera seem like perfectly nice people in the 10-minute "making of" bonus feature (though the script makes me wonder about writer/director Bo Zenda), but I have to call it like I see it. In the end, if you're looking for a fun little horror comedy to get you in the mood for Halloween, let me quote one of Mr. Nielsen's much better comedies and say, "Nothing to see here, move along, nothing to see here..."

Good funny Halloween movie, cleverly blends all of the classic horror movie icons such as Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Leatherface and Pinhead and makes fun of them in a humorous way. Great entertaining movie

Meet The Spartans - Pit Of Death Edition (2008)

Meet The Spartans - Pit Of Death EditionI'll have to admit, watching this movie the first time, there were some quick laughs, and it caught my attention. Sometimes, I feel the jokes were drawn out way too long, and that's a shame. If I were a 14 or 15 year old, I'd probably give this all 5 stars. This definitely isn't a movie in which you can watch over and over again. When you're bored, or strung out from the job, or the weekly grind is just too much and you want to let loose for a brief moment, go ahead. Otherwise, this movie is dime a dozen, in the ranks of The Comebacks, Epic Movie, etc etc etc.

Not only does this movie suck completely, it doesn't abide by the rules of how to make a good spoof at all. There was ONE scene where I laughed, and that was the "Ugly Betty" scene. Epic Movie was very poorly made, yet it had a few laugh-out-loud moments. Did I enjoy Date Movie at all? No. Neither did I enjoy this.

These are the rules of making a good spoof:

1. Be timely. A joke about Ellen in Mr. Wrong??????????

2. If trying to be offensive, be funny too. An accident-prone protagonist in Superhero Movie was funny, assaulting a Spartan kid with many heavyweight objects is not.

3. Widen your humor sources when cracking the odd joke. Go everywhere, don't stay on the same topic just with different words.

4. Be subtle when making a spoof. Not everything has to be uncalled for.

5. Don't go outside the genre you're spoofing. American Idol? Shrek? Casino Royale? Really??????

And lastly...

6. DON'T EXPLAIN EVERY SINGLE SOURCE MATERIAL AND RIFF. If you have to explain everything (Scary Movie 4 was brilliant because it only did this once), chances are it's not funny.

MTS doesn't do any of this, it just does the exact opposite. There's no plot (or so to speak), it's too unfunny to be a comedy, too spoofy to be a spoof, and overall, too unsubtle to be a comedy in the first place.

Unbearable.

All that needs to be said. Complete trash. I'm not sure at what point, pop-culture references became funny just by themselves. I guy dressed up like Sanjaya from American Idol pops out of nowhere and they kick him into a pit. Then the 3 person American Idol panel. Britney Spears and K-fed.

There's no setup. There's no nothing. If this is what has come of hollywood spoof comedies... I'm done... and now that we've seen a long string of these comedic failures pour out into the theatres and people actually pay for them... legitimizing them... we'll probably see more. It's a sad day in Hollywood.

Thousands of scripts are written every year that should be funded and produced before trash like this. When a supposed comedy does nothing but make this viewer angry... it's awful.

Everyone should be offended that cheap, brainless, here's a pop-culture reference and here's another type movies are being produced like MEET THE SPARTANS. We deserve better from people who are making millions hand over fist and can only come up with DATE MOVIE, EPIC MOVIE, LITTLE MAN, WHITE CHICKS and MEET THE SPARTANS.

In my 40 something years on this earth, and being a big fan and viewer of hundreds of comedies over the years, I honestly have to say this movie really, really sucks the big one!!! I did not even once come close to grinning at any point of this waste of film. I could not believe the level of crappiness this movie sunk to. The makers of this film, the actors, and whomever played a part in this movies production should be embarassed of themselves. Not even the slightest bit creative or funny in any way! I am just sorry I wasted time watching this piece of crap!

When parody movies (Epic Movie, Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie) started coming out, it was funny. Sure, these movies were cheesy, but way more enjoyable than this dreck.

This movie is littered with too many pop culture references. Rather than putting in real jokes and genuinely creative/funny situations, they chose to focus on making fun of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kobe, Britney Spears, Americsn Idol, and so on and so forth. Over ans over and over, especially with Paris Hilton. There were also a lot of product placements (ex. Subway sandwiches)

I unde4rstand this is a parody film and is not meant to be historically accurate. Which is just fine with me. But the pop references and product placement, along with some really stupid/gross/tasteless bits (like what the penguin did in Leonidas' mouth, or what the dog did to Leonidas in the James Bond scene) make for a movie that, instead of delivering good laughs, falls flat on its face due to being bogged down with all of these references instead of classic or real comedy bits and jokes. Many of the 'jokes' in this movie were also really milked and pushed too far, such as the scene where Leonidas pushes people into the pit. It was funny at first, but then he kept pushing more and more and MORE people into the pit and it just stopped being funny.

Just about the only thing I liked about this movie was Kevin Sorbo's appearance.
