Scary Movie 3 (Unrated Version) (2003)

Scary Movie 3I wondered when I watched the trailer for Scary Movie 3 why I was laughing so hard. Sure I enjoyed the first two films, but they seemed... amateurish. Yeah, I know the entire series is nothing but crass, low-brow humor, but that trailer was SO funny. I found myself on the Internet Movie Database () trying to figure it out. Much to my surprise, I found David Zucker (one of the three masterminds behind Airplane!) directing and writing AND Kevin Smith producing and writing the film. Zounds!

I don't know why or how the Wayans brothers aren't involved, but frankly it's for the better. The movie is absolutely hilarious. Oh sure, there are jokes so obvious they are like seeing a jumbo jet landing in your front yard, but there are also enough surprises that catch you off guard to more than make up for that.

The "plot" purees The Ring, Signs and Eight Mile into a mismatch of parody and slap-stick well enough that you wish the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams would get back together and come up with one more. This is mostly for two scenes that sustain laughs so long they actually hurt. Don't get me wrong. This nothing more than stupid, sophomoric humor, but when in the hands of talented comedic film makers, it becomes a film that demands repeated viewings much like Airplane! and Top Secret. In other words, a laugh riot.

Here's another Scary Movie sequel, but this time neither Wayans brother returns.

Scary Movie 3 is a hilarious movie starring returning castmembers Anna Faris (Lost In Translation) and Regina Hall, along with an incredible supporting cast including Charlie Sheen (Hot Shots), Leslie Neilsen (Airplane!), Anthony Anderson (Me Myself And Irene), and many others.

The film spoofs many recently popular horror films like The Ring, The Others, and Signs, while at the same time taking on other films like 8 Mile and The Truman Show.

Watch out for cameo appearances by Macy Gray, Ja Rule, American Idol's Simon Cowell, Queen Latifah, Eddie Griffin, Jeremy Piven as the whacky news broadcaster Ross Giggins, and a Michael Jackson look-alike.

While it was a little tamed from the first two and the lack of the Wayans' involvement in a film, Scary Movie 3 is stil a pretty good movie, maybe the best installment in the series. I don't think there's any movie that could mix horror and comedy into one successful film. This movie will have you entertained for hours and hours end. If you do not have this movie in your collection, I would recommend picking this up, ASAP!!!!

On the Double (1961)

On the DoubleAfter the success of his dramatic turn in "The Five Pennies", Danny Kaye returned to comedy at the tail end of his film career. Fortunately, "On The Double" is probably his last great film, a jaunty WWII intrigue-filled farce about a timid American soldier (Kaye) tapped by the military to serve as a decoy for a famous British Colonel (who's targeted for death by the Nazis) after it's discovered he's a dead ringer for the man. From there, poor Kaye fumbles through his role as the stakes get higher, involving himself in the Colonel's personal entanglements with his lovely but underappreciated wife (Dana Wynter) and amorous chauffeur (Diana Dors). As with Kaye's best films, this one relies on his special gifts for dialect, wordplay & rubber-faced timing. Just watch Kaye as he does his stuff in such hilarious comedy pieces as a military innoculation ceremony; a "dignified" ballroom complete with lost contact lenses, a wild Scottish dance, and food fight; and a climactic gag marathon of switching disguises to escape Germany.

Deftly helmed by notable director Mel Shavelson, its songs are supplied by Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine, and rounded out by a fine supporting cast (Wilfred Hyde-White and Jesse "Lonely Maytag Repairman" White). As with "Knock On Wood", Olive Films did a fine job of presenting this rare Kaye vehicle; the print is in good condition, and the colors vibrant.

Thanks for finally bringing this long-unseen movie to DVD!

On The Double, Wonderman and Court Jester are my 3 top favorites for Danny Kaye's hilarious comedy. I had a VHS taped version of On The Double from the television that was about 20 years old (low quality and full of commercials and cutoff about halfway) so I am very pleased to get the DVD version. The only things that would make the DVD release better is special features but I'm not complaining. Danny Kaye at his best! Look into his other films such as Five Pennies and White Christmas. Great, clean entertainment for the whole family.

On The Double

Danny Kaye had a long and varied career as an actor, singer, and dancer with stops on the Broadway stage (Lady In The Dark, Let's Face It), radio and television circuit, and Hollywood film (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Court Jester). At one point, he had his own TV show, The Danny Kaye show, airing on CBS from 1963 to 1967 that won both Emmy and Peabody awards. He could perform songs with tongue twisting lyrics, many of which were written by his wife; his movie roles often contained plots featuring body doubles and cases of mistaken identity that induce gut busting laughter. The film under review, On The Double, is one of these.

Kaye plays an enlisted military man with such a gift for impersonation, he's entered into a secret program to impersonate General Laurence McKenzie Smith, who we're told is busy planning the D-Day invasion. Part of Kaye's comedy is his ability to deliver long lines in one breath: "How many times have I told you I'm on a sorb free fat free high protein low calorie low cholesterol diet, now what's so difficult about that?" Other times, in a pantomime routine he becomes, by turn, a German spy, a fighter pilot, a high society matriarch, and a Marlene Dietrich impersonator.

With his ranting, blathering, blustering, and knee jerk idiocy on display in this film, many people with time on their hands are likely to re-discover how good Danny Kaye was at providing slapdash entertainment. As Cary Grant once said: "Dying is easy, comedy is hard."

So glad to be able to add this fun Danny Kaye to our film collection! Wonder where the rest of his classics are such as "Up In Arms", The Kid From Brooklyn", etc.... Please, please release them on dvd. We enjoyed "On the Double" very much as we had never seen it before it was a fun adventure. Subtitles/ captions would be, at the very least, a great addition to these newly released dvds for the price. Otherwise we enjoyed it very much.

Rather silly premise of just 2 American soldiers posted to a British unit. (The British soldiers were clearly American.) Danny Kaye's character was over-the -top. Still, there were some funny moments, like the impossibly quick costume changes as Kaye's character tried to escape from the German soldiers, none of whom seemed able to catch or shoot him. This type of slapstick comedy would have looked better in the 1920s.

Taxi (2004)

TaxiJimmy Fallon is a cop who is such a bad driver he loses his license. Queen Latifah is a cab driver with a souped up Taxi who is a great driver. When Fallon comandeers Latifah's cab to stop a bank robbery, vehicular mayhem and fun break out! Add to the mix the fact the bank robbers are Brazillian Super Models and you have a surreal good time for all!

Ignore the critics who have cut this movie to shreds. Its pure escapist fun that rates four stars. Enjoy!

I must confess, this is the first of Queen Latifah's movies I've watched. I dunno why, but I was convinced I didn't care for her as an actor. I was wrong.

Latifah plays Belle, an adrenalin addicted cab driver who's anxious to begin her career as a NYC cabbie in her souped up Ford Crown Victoria, yet despite her female macho outer shell, she's really a romantic softie at heart. Her character, despite being larger then life (come on... how many overweight black females actually ride as a bike courier in NYC?) is also not the typical paper-thin, one dimensional empty shell that so many comedy roles are. And her role perfectly complements the male lead.

Jimmy Fallon plays police detective Washburn, and he does such a fantastic job of playing a pathetic little dweeb of a cop that more then once I wanted Latifah to pound his skinny little a@@. The comedy kicks in when Washburn, who drives worse then a 90 year old grandma, looses his license and gets a demotion. He manages to hook up with Belle and her crown vic, and together the two unwilling partners must team up to stop a band of bank robbers.

Okay, so there's nothing deep or profound about the movie, but, Latifah and Fallon are talented comedians and together they make for a lot of laughs and a fun ninety minutes.

Enjoy!

This was a one of those movies that seems to go off track here and there. Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah fans will see the best and the worst of both stars. What you won't see is any consistency in this film.

Taxi is a movie that seems to change directors from day-to-day filming; there are scenes that have all the excitement and star quality of a "Lethal Weapon", and there are scenes that have all the drabness of a daytime soap opera.

Jimmy Fallon plays a cop who is not a very good driver and has an ex-girlfriend (so he says) for a boss. Their banter is not the least bit entertaining, even though I believe it is supposed to be.

Queen Latifah plays a bike courieor who finally gets her cabbie license. QL is an excellent actress, and at times I almost felt like she was doing everything in her power to carry this film. I think she is so appealing to the masses because she seems like such a "down-to-earth" person. She has a real charm on the screen.

Fallon's character has some truly funny moments: The huge pile-up of cars when he tries do commandeer a citizen's vehicle and his alcoholic mother are amusing, but these good spots are rare.

The whole movie seemed to need a rewrite. I didn't hate this movie, but I definitely didn't think it was all it could have been. Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon are so talented that it takes an amazing script to utilize their talents. I would advise them both to be more picky with their scripts.

So all and all...If there is nothing else to buy or rent, try this movie. I wouldn't make it my first choice.

See ya next review.

I wasn't sure about Taxi. I hate to admit I have been very disappointed at most of the comedy genre this summer. Taxi however was a refreshing change a new take on the buddy genre with Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon I was quickly involved in the laughs. The two of them play so well off of each other and the jokes were just silly enough to keep me laughing out loud. It was refreshing and Ann Margaret is hilarious as Jimmy's drunk mother.

So this is well worth a check out whether at the matinee or once it hits the cheaper seats. It was a very funny ride.

The Decoy Bride (2011)

The Decoy BrideI am a David Tennant fan and now a Kelly MacDonald fan. This is a lovely romantic comedy that focuses on characters caught in a delightful dilemma. This is the type of role that Tennant does with such ease giving depth to his character making it easy to see how two women would fall in love with him. Kelly MacDonald is down to earth and human like the rest of us. Making it even better is the fact that David's fiance is someone you also like in fact there isn't a character to dislike so no stress! Buy it, pop some popcorn, relax and enjoy I've watched it twice already I bought it region 2 from Amazon UK when it was released in England.

Admittedly, the only reason I got this film was to see David Tennant outside of the DOCTOR WHO realm. My expectations were low and so imagine my utter surprise when I found myself completely drawn in by this wonderful little comedy! The plot is pretty simple, but this film is so much more enjoyable because the writing is great and the actors are far more fun to watch than the standard American romantic comedy leads. Because the dialogue is delivered by actors who inhabit their character as opposed to actresses trying to pose as thespians, this film has a lot of heart going for it. And even though it's somewhat predictable, you cannot help but be entertained. No need to give you any plot points, but if you're a David Tennant fan, then you'll enjoy the film. If you like comedies that are not bombastic in their approach, then you'll be smitten. If you like excellent dialogue and quarky characters, then you might just fall in love with the film. Not the greatest story ever todl, but DECOY BRIDE is a far better film than anything featuring Katherine Hiegel and Jennifer Anniston. These actresses could learn a thing or two about sutbtleness, which is why this film works so well. Can't help it....I'm under the DECOY BRIDE's spell and am most likely going to buy this film on Blu Ray as it's a great film when you need cheering up and want a smile on your face!

I've just watched this movie one and three-fourths times in a row (all D.T. scenes), and then I went back and watched my favorite scenes again, twice. I jumped on the opportunity to see this movie in the US since I'm a die-hard David Tennant fan, and where do we get this much screen time with him lately? This was even better than I expected, and I'd recommend it as a good romp to anyone, fan of David Tennant or no. Best ten bucks ever spent! Enjoy!

I am admitted David Tennant fangirl, but having said that, the movie was cute and adorable all on it's own. A bit formulaic in parts, but it's a rom-com chick flick. David was great and Kelly was brilliant. I fell in love with both of them. Definitely worth the 10 dollars to watch!!

I am also a David Tennant fan from the US, and was so excited to see The Decoy Bride available here on Amazon. It was a really cute movie that was a bit quirky at times, laugh at loud funny (at least I did), and enjoyable to watch. David was (as usual) fantastic and Kelly MacDonald was lovely to watch as well. The island was a gorgeous backdrop for the story too. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys chick flickish movies, and/or is a David Tennant fan:)
