Two Can Play That Game (2001)

Two Can Play That GameTwo Can Play At That Game is a very interesting movie. Whoever says this movie isn't funny hasn't been in a relationship before. Point Blank. Through each characters strategic tactics I see myself. I say holdup hold up ...I ve done that before. Anthony Anderson basically makes this movie though. This man is too funny. He emphasizes the important words in the sentence to get his point across and his voice makes it hilarious. This is his best acting performance. Vivica Fox gives women a few unnecessary pointers ( from a man's perspective at least ) but she does keep it real. Morris Chestnut does excellent as well. The movie is fast paced as Vivica Fox and Anderson each play their cards at the situation they are given. They play it like a chess game and the `rules' are funny at times. The girlfriends (Tamala Jones, Wendy Racquel Robinson and MoNique )really act like real friends and they have good chemistry together. The movie wasn't too long and didn't bore me to death as most love stories do.

When I first saw it I couldn't really understand why Morris Chestnut was moping around. `I'm not gonna call, I already called twice, can't be desperate" lol. I was like man if you don't quit b!tchin...But then I remembered that Vivica Fox is finer than a mutha. I'm surprised he didn't cry. Shante takes him through a grueling three day process where she hardly even speaks to him and breaks up with him. The only useless day was day six. There was no purpose for it. The funniest part is at the end when she expects him to be at her house waiting on her with flowers. I could have told her beyotch please that aint gonna happen. And then when he didn't show it was just hilarious. I was like "ahhh that shhh didn't work" and then five seconds later she's like "I know what ya thinking...the shhh didn't work" By then I was on the flo rolling. It was so funny.

The good thing about this movie is that actors really seemed like they enjoyed playing the roles. The movie is fast, fun, lighthearted, and entertaining. A nice classic chill out movie. The narrating didn't bother me at all. I recommend seeing this film.

This is perhaps the best romantic comedy I've ever seen. Vivica's character catches her man out on the dance floor when he said he'd be working late. He explains but she's determined to keep him in line by punishing him. It's hilariously funny and very romantic. A must see!

I was reluctant to go plop down money to see this movie, having heard that is was exactly like the numerous African American movies that have hit theaters over the past several years. After all too much of a good thing can be a turn off. However, after deciding that it was easier to just go see it instead of continuing to wonder about it, I took in a Sunday matinee.

For the duration of the film, I was grinning, shaking my head, and sometimes ever laughing out loud. Vivica Fox has never been a favorite of mine but I have to give it to her: she played the role of Chante extremely well. The supporting cast (the main reason I finally went to see it) were outstanding as well.

Doug McHenry has made a career out of producing and directing witty, entertaining films. Great job once again.

The acting in this movie was great. Vivica A. Fox plays Shante, a woman who catches her boyfriend Keith (Morris Chestnut) cheating with her rival Conny (Gabrielle Union). This movie is funny and the stars do great jobs, especcially Union. If you liked "How To Be A Player", "The Brothers", "The Wood", and movies like that you will love this.

Miss Vivica Played the part in this movie. She was professional and very to the point. Everyone who played in this movie did a very good job. This is real live rather you believe it or not . This is how a lot of people play games but she did it with class. Mark Brown selected a good cast for this movie. I recommend it highly .

The Player (2010)

The Player"Players only love you when they're playing." --Stevie Nicks

Griffin Mill, whose name has a kind of ersatz Hollywood feel to it (cf., D. W. Griffith/Cecil B. De Mille), is not a player with hearts so much as a player with dreams. He is a young and powerful film exec who hears thousands of movie pitches a year, but can only buy twelve. So he must do a lot of dissembling, not to mention outright lying, along with saying "We'll get back to you," etc. This is what he especially must say to writers. And sometimes they hold a grudge. In this case one of the rejected writers begins to stalk Griffin Mill and send him threatening postcards. And so the plot begins.

Tim Robbins, in a creative tour de force, plays Griffin Mill with such a delightful, ironic charm that we cannot help but identify with him even as he violates several layers of human trust. The script by Michael Tolkin smoothly combines the best elements of a thriller with a kind of Terry Southern satirical intent that keeps us totally engrossed throughout. The direction by Robert Altman is full of inside Hollywood jokes and remembrances, including cameos by dozens of Hollywood stars, some of whom get to say nasty things about producers. The scenes are well-planned and then infused with witty asides. The tampon scene at police headquarters with Whoopi Goldberg is an hilarious case in point, while the sequence of scenes from Greta Scacchi's character's house to the manslaughter scene outside the Pasadena Rialto, is wonderfully conceived and nicely cut. Also memorable is the all black and white dress dinner scene in which Cher is the only person in red, a kind of mean or silly joke, depending on your perspective. During the same scene Mill gives a little speech in which he avers that "movies are art," a statement that amounts to sardonic irony since, as a greedy producer, he cares nothing at all about art, but only about box office success. His words also form a kind of dramatic irony when one realizes that this movie itself really is a work of art. As Altman observes in a trailing clip, the movie "becomes itself." The Machiavellian ending illustrates this with an almost miraculous dovetailing. This is the kind of script that turns most screen writers Kermit-green with envy.

Incidentally, Joe Gillis, the Hollywood writer played by William Holden in Sunset Boulevard--personifying all unsuccessful screen writers--actually does call during the movie, but Mill doesn't recognize the name and has to be told he is being put on, further revealing the narrow confines of his character.

In short, this is a wonderfully clever, diabolically cynical satire of Hollywood and the movie industry. This is one of those movies that, if you care anything at all about film, you must see. Period. It is especially delicious if you hate Hollywood. It is also one of the best movies ever made about Hollywood, to be ranked up there with A Star is Born (1937) (Janet Gaynor, Fredric March); Sunset Boulevard (1950); A Star is Born (1954) (Judy Garland, James Mason); and Postcards from the Edge (1990).

I must add that in the annals of film, this has to go down as one of the best Hollywood movies not to win a single Academy Award, although it was nominated for three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. I suspect the Academy felt that the satire hit a little too close to home for comfort.

--Dennis Littrell, author of "Cut to the Chaise Lounge or I Can't Believe I Swallowed the Remote!"

Can movies about the movie business actually be exciting and worth watching? "The Player" most certainly is an exciting and worth-while film that has many layers within it. At first glance, this appears only as an odd thriller that's both bizarre and unbelievable--but upon further investigation, you'll find out that this is something that is so much more than your ordinary thriller.

Griffin Mill is a studio executive that listens to movie pitches on a daily basis. Some pitches are great while others aren't as fantastic. One of the writers that Griffin never called back seems to have held a grudge against him, as he sends him threatening post-cards telling the exec that his days are numbered. Not knowing what else to do, Griffin decides to confront the suspected writer only to end up being involved in a murder. As he tries to cover his tracks and play it cool, it is clear that Griffin has been thrown into an uncontrollable scenario that could only be found in the movies.

I admit that the first time I saw this film, I didn't really know how to react to it. I didn't know if I liked it, but I knew that I didn't hate it. And, I confess that by the end of the movie, I was scratching my head in confusion. It was the second viewing where I really found out what the movie was all about and came to love it. The movie is not your typical thriller. It actually is more of a satire that targets the movie industry and movies in general. And, it's done in such a way that you really don't catch onto that with the first viewing, as you're caught up in the story and are convinced that you're watching nothing more than a thriller. This movie has a number of layers to it--even layers that I probably haven't caught onto yet. You know a film has unquestionable power when you are tricked into believing that it is something else the first time and then come to realize that it is something completely different the next time around.

The film is brilliantly directed by Robert Altman. There's no way in heck that the movie would be the success it is had it been under a different director. He knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it. The acting from Tim Robbins and company is really a sight to see. It's also a treat to see so many cameos by different famous actors that we all know and love.

The DVD has a few goodies to offer for those who enjoy DVD extras. The picture is decent looking--nothing extraordinary, but decent. It says on the back cover that it was remastered in "High Definition," but I think improvements could've been made in certain areas. Extras on the DVD include commentary from the director and writer, a Robert Altman featurette, deleted scenes, the original trailer and more. A pretty nice package that doesn't disappoint with exception towards picture quality in some areas.

"The Player" is a superbly executed film that doesn't jump out right away to let you know what it is really all about. On the first viewing, the movie appears to be nothing more than an off-the-wall thriller, but on a second viewing you will come to find that it is something more. It's not a movie that will be loved by everybody, but for those who love odd films with hidden structures and meanings will absolutely love it. If you have an open-mind and want to take a chance by seeing something that isn't so ordinary, "The Player" awaits for you. -Michael Crane

"The Player" is one of those fascinating comedic thrillers with one defined dramatic plot, and various subplots dealing with the movie industry. Player is not a fast paced thriller, but rather an intelligent and laid back story surrounded by Hollywood and the business of film making. Tim Robbins plays Griffin Mill, a studio executive whose main job is to decide which scripts make it to the big screen. When he starts receiving threatening postcards, he suspects they come from a writer whose script was turned down. Hence, he tries to identify the writer in order to pay him off and stop the blackmail. Apparently he found the writer , apparently not. Murder. Whoopi Goldberg's performance as detective Avery, investigating the murder, is simply wonderful and provides humor with her spicy language. For the rest of the plot, you must see the movie. Directed by Robert Altman (Gosford Park), Player's cast include Greta Scacchi, Peter Gallagher, Fred Ward, Lyle Lovett and numerous cameo appearances by familiar faces such as Lily Tomlin, Bruce Willis, Robert Wagner, Susan Sarandon, Julia Roberts, Nick Nolte, Andie McDowell, John Cusack, to name a few. Besides the main plot, this is certainly a good perspective of how decisions are made in Hollywood, and the dynamics and politics of movie making . Player views the "film noir" and independent film making alternatives, and flirts with the concepts of dissociation of the big studios with the artistic ("Ars Gratia Artis") philosophies of the old days, those being replaced with the "money-making-happy-ending" driving forces of modern day Hollywood. This is a great film about film execs in Hollywood. A good mystery with biting humor and insight into the power/control world of movie-making. Tim Robbins is excellent in the lead role and Robert Altman's directing is superior. The story is great, especially if you've been an actor, director, producer or anyone in dealing with stage or film making. This is a must have for Altman fans and for movie collectors.

I saw THE PLAYER the first time in a packed theater in Santa Monica. The audience, which no doubt contained many people from the entertainment community, laughed knowingly throughout. I couldn't help thinking, though, that the biggest joke was on them. For if THE PLAYER depicts a corrupt environment, it's the people in that world that make it that way.

As usual, Altman gets all the details right: the receptionist being coached in the proper way to answer the phone; the asinine rationalizations of non-talents hawking fifth-rate ideas; or the constant shifts in fashion represented by my favorite joke, the running gag about the bottled waters. Also as usual, any deeper insight is lacking. Altman focuses on greed and power hunger, and daringly implies they may be the cause of Hollywood's problems. It's not much of a recommendation for a satire that it "reveals" something everyone knows going into the theater. (If the film showed the people around Robbins cognizant and accepting of his guilt, for example, or if it showed audiences reacting favorably to the mish-mash he ends up producing, it would have more punch.)

It's been said that every film about Hollywood tells basically the same story, and there's a reason for it. Stories, as works of art, have an inherent form. They are logical, and inevitably impose that logic on the events they recount. Hollywood is essentially illogical; it cannot be captured by story-telling, because no narrative can express its inherent flight from reason. Exaggerations like allowing an executive to get away with murder are momentarily diverting metaphors, funny twists which nonetheless pale before the daily insanity of a town running on bluff, incompetence, deceit and stupidity. Besides, if any Hollywood filmmaker came close to showing its real depravity, he'd never work again. Breaking Tinseltown's code of silence is its one unforgiveable sin.

THE PLAYER is certainly a reasonable addition to the films-about-Hollywood genre, and fits well on Altman's resume. It's moderately entertaining, and harmless enough as long as you recognize that its depiction of Hollywood is about as accurate as GONE WITH THE WIND's depiction of the Civil War. It flatters audiences into thinking that they're thinking, when in fact they are reacting precisely as planned. In short, pure Hollywood.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Some Like It HotTo correct the technical info above, this DVD (both the special edition and movie-only edition) DOES HAVE an English monophonic soundtrack that was originally used in the film. Also included is a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but one wonders if a dialog-heavy film like this should really need a surround soundtrack. Dialogs in both the mono and the 5.1 tracks sound perfectly clear and understable. The surround sound only comes into use during the occasional music and gunfight sequences. I do applaud the inclusion of the original mono track, which quite a few recent DVDs of older movies do not provide in the hope of enticing new DVD owners with 5.1 audio.

The video transfer looks great -images are sharp, levels of black look realistic (you can clearly see and feel the velvety texture of a black robe Monroe wears), signs of wear and tear are virtually non-existent. The picture aspect ratio is 1.66:1, which is not the 1:85:1 ratio used for the original US theatrical release and for all previous US letterboxed laserdisc releases. The 1.66:1 ratio adds a little picture to the top, but doesn't really affect the composition. The video is also non-anamorphic, so the resolution is not as high on a widescreen TV as it would be with an anamorphic DVD. There is also no English optional subtitles, but there are yellow optional French and Spanish ones.

I would have gladly paid a higher price if they had included better supplementary material on the Special Edition DVD, such as the audio commentary and home movies that were put on the Criterion laserdisc made in the early 90s. The extras on the Special Edition DVD include a lively but superficial 30-minute new interview with Tony Curtis reminiscing about the film, a rather uninteresting 12-minute interview with the actresses who played the girl band members, a segment called "Virtual Hall of Memories" that is essentially a still gallery, and trailers of 7 Wilder films including SOME LIKE IT HOT; all the trailers are in poor video condition. The most interesting extra is a reproduction of a pressbook for the film, but the pictures are blurry and the smaller text is illegible. I am disappointed that we never get to hear from Jack Lemmon or Billy Wilder, both still alive, on this DVD. These extras are not impressive, so one may consider buying the movie-only edition for a cheaper price.

Billy Wilder's most popular comedy finally receives the deluxe treatment it deserves. MGM previously released this classic comedy in a nonanamorphic widescreen version a couple of years back. While that edition looked pretty decent this anamorphic transfer puts any previous editions (including my much favored laserdisc edition) to shame. Wilder's comedy operates as a spoof of gangster films and a comedy about gender roles. Jerry (the late Jack Lemmon) and Joe (Tony Curtis) are two musicians on the lam when they witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. With Spats Columobo (George Raft) and his men looking for the duo they go undercover as musicians cross dressing and joining an all female band headed for a gig in Florida. Becoming a woman allows Joe/Josephine to spent time with Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) the latest woman that catches Joe's fancy. Jerry/Daphne on the other hand finds himself romanced by a rich man (Joe E. Brown) who won't take the hint as Jerry tries to blow off his advances.

And you thought the 50's were tame. One of Wilder's richest 50's comedies "Some Like It Hot" continues to be very funny inverting our expectations constantly and playing with the roles that Jerry and Joe take on with their new identities. Joe's eyes open the most as before he was a pretty ruthless womanizer. Becoming a woman puts him in the crosshairs of every male insight and he's on the receiving end of all the smirks, comments and passes that he would have used with Sugar before his change. Wilder mixes social commentary so deftly with comedy (like Hitchcock's work with suspense and social commentary) that at his best--and he's at his best here--it reminds us how entertaining a movie can be without being heavy handed. It's also filled with some marvelous in jokes (for example Colombo played by George Raft observes a thug flipping a coin and comments, "Where did you pick up that cheap trick?" Raft of course did the exact thing in one of his signature roles in "Scarface" from 1932).

A great movie looks even better in this sharp looking transfer. The black and white imagery of the film looks gorgeous. Originally Marilyn Monroe lobbied to have the film shot in color which Billy Wilder felt wouldn't work for this comedy (he persuaded her to agree to shoot in black and white when he showed her make up tests for Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in color where their make up as women made them look slightly green) while the film certainly would have looked great in color the sumptuous cinematography by Charles Lang ("The Magnificent Seven", "Wait Until Dark") looks extremely good in this wonderful looking transfer. Detail is quite good and blacks are solid with a nice array of different textures evident in the transfer. Audio is presented in the original mono and sounds fine.

For those that are into such things the special features here are a huge improvement over the previous edition. We get a commentary track compiled from comments by the late Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and I.A.L. Diamond's son (working with the comedy writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel--honestly I could have thought of better writers to pair with Diamond's son). While the insights aren't exactly a revelation it is an enjoyable commentary track.

We also get two terrific documentaries on the making of the film. The first features a mixture of new and older interviews from the cast and crew. The second documentary "The Legacy of `Some Like it Hot'" is packed with trivia about the making of the film, Wilder & Monroe's relationship on the set and the difficult time Wilder had making the film with his leading lady including footage shot in the 80's of Wilder and Diamond.

Finally we get "Memories from the Sweet Sues" featurette with members of the women who played in the band, an interview with Tony Curtis entitled "Nostalgic Look Back" where Curtis reveals that actor/voice artist Paul Frees did much of his voice as Josephine because he had difficulty reaching the high voice. We also get the imaginatively titled but unimpressive "Virtual Hall of Memories 3-D Tour" The original pressbook appears on the DVD as well and we get reproductions of various lobby cards. Finally we get previews and the original theatrical trailer.

Far more impressive than the lackluster previous DVD releases "Some Like It Hot" looks solid in this re-release although the film could look a bit more vibrant. The featurettes are, for the most part, very good and the compiled commentary track adds loads of trivia (some of which is duplicated in the featurettes) about the making of the film. I do wish that a film historian such as UCLA professor Howard Suber had been involved in some way to help provide context for the movie but that's just personal preference. A fine release that could have been great with a wee bit more effort on the part of Sony/MGM.

In 1929 during the St. Valentines Day massacre, two traveling musicians, witness one of the hits initiated by the mob. The only way the duo can think of to avoid being discovered is to join an all female band playing in Florida as women. Joe is looking forward to the gig, so that he can spend more time with Sugar while Jerry is horrified to find himself fighting off the advances of a rich suitor. Joe the consummate womanizer finally gets to see what it is like to be on the other side of the coin to see what he has been dishing out for years.

Many see this as a ground breaking movie especially for the 1950's with the theme of cross dressing and gender roles, but I just enjoyed Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon giving some of the best comedic performances of their careers, and Marilyn Monroe shining her brightest. It is laugh out loud funny, and a movie you will watch over and over again.

SOME LIKE IT HOT is a classic for many reasons. The film may seem a little dated to some viewers but what keeps it forever great and irresistible are the superb performances by Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. Filming it in black and white helped greatly to believe the two men being accepted as women. And it also helped make Marilyn stand out even more with her effervescent and transcendent beauty. But when looking at a blu ray version of a film that has seen much life on dvd a buyer must know if double dipping is really worth it. Especially where SOME LIKE IT HOT came out with a superb dvd transfer years ago.

To put it simply, the film honestly looks and sounds great on blu ray and is a vast improvement over even its best dvd transfer. There is much clarity improvement in the video and the crispness in detail is vivid. Facial closeups are particular standouts. The black and white ratio is perfect and the film has not been overly enhanced or tried to be cleaned up as blu rays often are. The intended grainess is still there which adds character to the film. But seeing Tony and Jack in their female getup with the picture so clear is amazing and nothing can surpass how Marilyn comes across in this blu ray version. When she first walks by the train and the steam comes out you know what picture perfection you are in for. And every time her face appears, be it out of a train sleeping bunk or just entering a scene you can see every feature and fine detail of her face in all its glory. The picture takes on its own life when she is singing I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU. Just the spotlight highlighting her face whenever she sings is your proof of the blu ray improvement. The sensual gift and aura that was Marilyn Monroe takes full advantage of the blu ray.

And the audio is a huge improvement. The audio now is in a DTS Master 5.1 and the sound will come out all your speakers gloriously. And again the highlights are Marilyn's songs. Sadly the extras here are exactly the same as on the last dvd release. Luckily the retail price of this film is not high. Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and particularly Marilyn give career highlight performances and it is amazing to believe the difficulties they had filming due to Marilyn's insecurities. With this film you get a fun farce with endearing performances that stand the test of time. And the blu ray is a must if you are a fan of the film or anyone in it. Highly recommended.

With its pseudo-homoerotic undercurrents, I sometimes wonder how this film got past the 50's-era censors. No matter. Writer-director Billy Wilder, and leads Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe dazzle with their comic genius.

You can watch this movie over and over and it always seems fresh. Perhaps it's the realization that Monroe and her alter ego Sugar Kane are far more intelligent than they first appear. Seeing gold-digger-with-a-cause Sugar and faux oil magnate Joe (Curtis) manipulating each other is a hoot. Or perhaps it's Jerry's (Lemmon) gender crisis when he realizes that being a woman, even in a man's world, does have some perks to go along with the headaches.

In any case, the fun lies in seeing three tangles of lies and deceit growing ever bigger and out of control, like a comic Gordian knot, only to be cut at the last second with what's perhaps the funniest yet most anti-climactic punchline in film history. Between the sight gags, the slapstick, and the witty banter, you can't help but feel good watching this movie. There's really nothing bad to say about it; even the draggy parts are far more entertaining than what passes for comedy in most movies.

Role Models (2008)

Role ModelsRole Models is not a particularly deep or innovative comedy, in fact it's plotline will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched a movie, period. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't provide lots of laughs and much needed escapism for it's 90 plus minutes.

Paul Rudd And Sean William Scott star as two slackers who find themselves sentenced to 30 days of community service following a work related blow up by Rudd's characther that comes on the heels of being dumped by his longtime girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks). The two are ordered to do their hours of community service at a Big Brothers and Sisters type of organization where each of them are paired up with a "troubled" kid.

Can you guess where this is going? The two men will learn to look past their own self indulgence and care for the kids. A valuable lesson is learned by all. This plot really doesn't matter. What does matter are the performances. Rudd and Scott are hilarious as the overgrown man-children and they share an effortless chemistry. Rudd especially is in top form, spewing sarcasm and self loathing with every line and garnering laughs from his facial expressions alone. Rudd is clearly in his element here.

When Rudd turns into an unselfish nice guy at the end, it's a bit of a stretch for the audience to accept that he made such a quick transition. Rudd's performance may be hilarious, but his character is not that well developed for his transformation to be believable. But hey, this ain't art. It's a largely entertaining buddy comedy with lots of smart and raunchy humor that should be viewed as exactly that.

Like its two lead characters, ROLE MODELS is a movie that doesn't seem to be expecting too much of itself as it lures us into familiar man-child territory.

Seann William Scott and (co-writer) Paul Rudd are Wheeler and Danny, two low-achieving coworkers paid to travel to schools with an act that preaches against drugs while pushing powerful energy-drinks as the safe alternative. The difference between them? Wheeler loves his work and thinks of Danny as his friend. Danny hates his job, the fact that he should have done more with his life and can't commit to being more than a colleague to Wheeler. Danny's mean, sarcastic and rude to coffee shop baristas. Clearly he doesn't deserve a girlfriend like Beth (Elizabeth Banks), who rejects his spontaneous marriage proposal and dumps him instead. Danny's dejection leads to a tangle with the law and soon he and Wheeler are sent to perform 150 hours of community service at the local mentoring program, Sturdy Wings.

This is where the movie grows some wings of its own and really takes off. The flight path may be familiar, and there are no surprises when it comes to a predictably happy landing. But the journey becomes a lot of fun when Wheeler and Danny become "Bigs" to two very different "Littles," Ronnie (Bobb'e J. Thompson) and Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

It's clear that on paper at least, our two ROLE MODELS lack all the traditional skills required to teach anything to the kids. Fast-talking, foul-mouthed Ronnie is the product of broken home in need of a father figure, not a "booby" obsessed party lover like Wheeler. The costume-sewing fantasy game participant Augie shouldn't expect much sympathy from the snide Danny. Bad mentoring leads to chaos, confusion and near-tragedy. But somehow, everyone develops the sturdiness of wing to make it to the end having taught something to someone else--and discovered something essential about themselves.

Supporting characters add to the fun throughout, especially Jane Lynch as the ex-coke-addict who founded the Sturdy Wings program and the various costumed characters who take the game of "Laire" very seriously indeed.

ROLE MODELS is a movie that won't teach you much. But it will definitely make you laugh.

Right off the bat I have to say that Vesta and I almost hit the reject button on the DVD player. This movie started out stupid and dumb and we were pretty sure it had nowhere to go. Time to get up and watch something on Hulu.

"You wanna do it?" She said.

"No, I got the cat." Scruffy, our mangy tom was sitting in my lap and I was comfortable in my recliner.

"Somebody has to get up and get that bloody movie out of that player." She was comfortable in her recliner too. That's the problem with these things, get a glass of wine in your hand, recline and you just don't wanna get up.

So we let the movie play a bit longer and son of a gun if I didn't start laughing on occasion. Vesta too. Then more laughter, then I was into this silly story and it was silly, but somehow, I don't know how, we wound up being entertained and that's what movies are supposed to be about. They're supposed to take you out of you're life for an hour or two and this one did.

Maybe this movie was made for younger people. Vesta thought it was made for guys who like to get together with a few beers and laughs. But whoever the intended audience, we wanna sign up with `em, because though this movie started out stupid and dumb, it wound up being campy and fun. Yes, it was lewd and crude, but heck, it was sort of a romantic comedy too. Sort of a coming of age story as well. All in all, I gotta say, this is an unexpectedly good movie.

I saw this movie once, laughed a little and was well on my way. Then i rented it again when a few buddies were over and laughed like crazy. There are little pieces in the movie, where it was slow, paul rudd and SWS did a good job in this film. If your in the 18-25yr range this is a must have!!!

I've seen "Role Models" numerous times in its edited form on FX. I enjoyed it immensely so I purchased the Unrated version. Its still a funny movie with a glaring exception-the foul mouthed adolescent who is Seann William Scott's charge. I'm far from a prude and like inspired crude humor as well as the next guy. I have nothing against movies trying to push the envelope. That said, I found nothing funny about an eight or nine year old spouting profanity some of it of an extremely scatalogical nature. The adults in the film don't seem offended but respond to the kid in kind. This to me smacks of exploitation and I don't think its as cute as the makers of the film seem to think it is. Where's trying to maintain a child's innocence for as long as possible? When I was a kid I heard profanity. I learned not to repeat it in front of my parents after getting my mouth washed out with soap which I'm still tasting some forty years later. This is for the most part a very funny movie that didn't need to appeal to the lowest common denominator to succeed.

Nine Months (2011)

Nine MonthsSamuel and Rebecca have it all. During their near-perfect, five-year relationship, they've seen their careers thrive; experienced countless nights of passion in their wonderful San Francisco home; and had the freedom to take off on romantic weekends at whim. And then one day they receive a little surprise... one that will catapult their life of Perfect Order into one of Utter Chaos: Rebecca is pregnant, and Samuel's life will never be the same. His frenetic new existence begins with an unlikely friendship with a couple of well-meaning, but overbearing parents, Marty and Gail. This is one of the funniest movies. This movie will make you laugh and cry. I highly reccomend this movie.

An outstanding romantic comedy, Nine Months, brings to the screen exactly what the title implies: the story of a pregnancy with all the ups and downs that it entails!

It is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, and inner strength.

Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore, Robin Williams, Tom Arnold and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears. The film is simple enough, but does a great job of describing people's every day lives and the problems they face. It just goes to show that simplicity is often far better than complexity, when trying to present issues of a human nature.

In short, Nine Months is a movie definitely worth watching!

I've watched this movie many times since I've been ill, and I know it kept me from going nuts. I laughed out loud from one minute into the movie when Tom starts giving mouth to mouth to Samuel until the very end. My son had to come and check on me to see if I was OK since I was ill. There was never a dull moment. It's exactly how a lot of single guys would act when told there about to become a dad. Especially when their life is just perfect! I adore Hugh Grant, and I thougt the entire cast was terrific and superbly cast. The SUV scenes were truly great and well directed, as were all the others. Hugh brought tears to my eyes at the end of the movie when he picked up the baby and danced to "These Are The Days". Hugh you would make a great dad, and you certainly knew how to hold this baby, maybe YOU need to see the movie again. In my opinion it's right up there with "FWAAF" and "About a Boy" great movies.

This review refers to the DVD edition(20th Cent Fox) of "Nine Months"......

Looking for a good time but don't want to leave your couch. Here's the answer for you.."Nine Months". Directed by Chris Columbus(Harry Potter/Home Alone) starring Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore,Robin Williams, Tom Arnold, Joan Cusak and Jeff Goldblum. These are names that really know how to entertain and will have you laughing out loud the entire length of the film. "Nine Months" is a hysterical look at the fears, joys and anticipation of becoming a parent and the waiting period that goes along with it.

Samuel and Rebecca have a relationship to be envied. Samuel is a successful child psychiatrist, the beautiful Rebecca is a graceful dance instructor, they have a cool apartment and car and five years of UNwedded bliss...don't fix it if it ain't broken...right? Well they are in for a big change in their lives. When Rebecca utters those wonderful words..."Samuel...I'm pregnant", the very cool and level headed Samuel practically kills them when he runs the car off the road. And so the fun begins. He discovers he has some growing up to do and it's easier said then done.

Included in the fun are their new "friends", Marty and Gail Dwyer a very pushy but well meaning couple played by Tom Arnold and Joan Cusak. They are old pros at the pregnancy game, as they are working on their fourth. Arnold's one liners are non stop and delivered with his usual brand of boisterous humor, and you never knew how funny delivering a baby could be until you have seen Cusak's brilliantly comical turn in the labor room. Jeff Goldblum, is Samuel's single friend, his link to his youth, and turns in a great performance. Then, of course there's the obstetrician. Who else can make having a baby such a riotious romp other than Robin Williams. He's just absolutely zany as the Russian Dr. Kosevitch, about to attempt his first delivery, human delivery that is!

So prepare to laugh out loud as Samuel and Marty go fist to cuffs with "Arnie the Dinosaur", Dr. Kosevich butchers the English language, it's Murphy's Law on the way to the hospital, and Rebecca and Gail make impending motherhood a delight for all.

You can't go wrong with the film or with the DVD. It's a beautiful picture in anamorphic widescreen(Aspect Ratio 2.35:1), and the audio in Dolby Dig 5.1(or Surround) is outstanding. The soundtrack including "The Time of Your Life"(Steve Van Zandt) and scoring by Hans Zimmer is perfect for this film. There are subtitles in English and Spanish and may be viewed in French. There are trailers but no other special features included. It's a quality transfer with at an exceptionally good price.

It's it's a great ride, and one you will want to go on again...have fun...Laurie

Sarah Michelle Gellar Collection (Suburban Girl/ The Air I Breathe) (2007)

Sarah Michelle Gellar CollectionI bought the Sarah Michelle Gellar Collection for my daughter. She LOVES it. But then she LOVES anything with Sarah Michelle Gellar in it. The movies are cute and good teenage fare as teenage movies go. I like the nonviolence better, the romantic comedy was sweet. It provided a totally different side of Sarah Michelle Gellar than I've ever seen. I have to admit, beyond Buffy and I Saw What You Did Last Summer I'm not exactly a Gellarphile. If you have a teen who's a fan, this collection will have you on the A list for at least a little while!

I have become a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar's because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I was curious about other movies and work she has done over the years. I bought the Sarah Michelle Gellar Collection because it contained a drama as well as a comedy and I figured this would give me a pretty good idea of her range as an actress. One of the movies is called "Suburban Girl" which I guess could called a romantic comedy of sorts. The movie is good and a little offbeat which I liked and I loved the character she played in it. Sarah really makes her believable and likable and you find yourself hoping it all works out in the end which of course it does. The other movie is called "The Air that I Breathe" which is a drama. This movie was definitely a little different, it has an excellent cast including Sarah and is well written if strange. It's a series of short tales involving the same characters in different scenarios. One review I saw compared it to "Crash" which seems pretty accurate. While watching it I found myself wondering what the stories had in common, the segment which features Sarah's character is kind of depressing in places but highlights her ability to do dramatic roles. The end of the movie ties everything together very neatly and closes the circle. This is an excellent movie and I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is very underrated as an actress. I highly recommend this movie collection to anyone who is already a Buffy fan.

Bulletproof (1996)

BulletproofI really liked this movie for a couple different reasons. First of all both Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler are two of my favorite comedy actors. Both these guys seem to draw off each other very well and make a great team. I also liked the story and the little twists and turns it takes close to the end. There are also a few scenes that are the funniest stuff I've ever seen Sandler do. If you're in to crime, action, and most of all comedy movies then I definately say buy this movie

In Hollywood, several comedy stars who make action flicks usually get laughed atand they usually get laughed at pretty bad. Sure, it would be interesting to see someone like Jim Carrey or Robin Williams do an action movie, but that will probably never happen, and once comedy star Bruce Willis proved that he could pull off an action movie("Die Hard")while Eddie Murphy has a talent for both action and comedy as well. So, if you take a look at Adam Sandler and his movies, and if you thought that you would never see Adam Sandler do an action movie, then you are wrong-because Sandler's 1996 film with Daman Wayans, "Bulletproof" does have some comedy in it, but there is a lot of action in it as well.

The movie starts off with Sandler portaying Archie Moses, a small time car thief and a drug dealer in Los Angeles. His best friend is Rock Keats (Wayans)who is also a car thief. Moses and Keats have been friends for a year. Meanwhile, Moses is working on a drug operation with a drug lord named Frank Colton (James Caan)and talks to Colton (his boss)about bringing Keats in on their operation. Colton is worried that Keats is a cop, but Moses assures Colton that Keats is not a cop, and then Keats is in on the operation. The only problem is that Keats is a cop, his real name is Jack Carter, and he is working undercover with the LAPD to bust Moses and Colton at a sting operation the LAPD has set up.

Then, the day finally comes. When Moses finds out that Keats is a cop, he feels angry. He feels betrayed. And then he shoots Keats (accidently). Moses and Colton then become fugitives, Keats ends up in a Los Angeles hospital, and six months later, he gets out. This is when Moses is arrested in Arizona, and because Colton wants Moses dead for a bringing a cop into his organization (as well as Keats)Moses is ready to turn Colton in so Colton will be arrested and Moses won't have to worry for his life. But Moses will only bring Colton in on one condition: Keats must bring him in. So Keats flys out to Arizona so he can bring Moses back to California to testify against Colton. However, Colton is aware of everything that has happened, and as a result, Moses and Colton spend their time trying to get back to California while they are at each other's throats, and several funny events are happening.

"Bulletproof" is an enjoyable, underrated action/comedy flick. It was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who has directed thrillers such as "Juice" and "Surviving The Game" and has even worked with Spike Lee as a cinematagrapher on some of his films. Dickerson is a good director, and "Bulletproof" gives him the chance to show his directing talent. Adam Sandler, Daman Wayans, and James Caan do a good job with their acting in this movie, while they keep the chemistry flowing between their characters. "Bulletproof" is action, comedy, and chemistry all together at their best, and if you are a fan of Adam Sandler, Daman Wayans, James Caan, or movies with both action and comedy, then you should check out this movie.

Adam Sandler does it again, with another fun movie! This one is action-packed, and a great buddy movie. Damon Wayans is excellent in this film as well, and the two together make for a fun memorable show.

The ending will leave you with a few loose ends, but you won't miss much... with an ending as funny as the rest of this film.

Step Brothers (2-Disc Unrated Edition) (2008)

Step BrothersI don't understand how people didn't like this movie.... I take that back. I expect that people didn't like this movie because they expected something smarter. For the record, don't expect this to be an intelligent comedy. It's not. At the same time, I think it's absolutely hilarious. I'm a firm believer in setting our own expectations. If you expected Twister to be some amazing, epic film, then you were probably disappointed. If you expected it to be a movie about a tornado, you were most likely entertained. The same applies to this film. Don't go in expecting an artistic masterpiece. It's crude, rudimentary comedy, and it's nice to be spoon-fed ridiculously "insipid" humor from time to time. I. Loved. This. Film. It's ridiculous, just don't expect too much.

This movie is a real sleeper. The first time I watched it I thought it was funny, but after watching a few more times I think it is great. These two portray the base element of every man. The "forever 13" humor that almost all men love, even if they don't like to admit it. Mary Steenburgen is also hilarious. Some people who are too uptight to laugh at juvenile humor will trash this movie, but it is funny. The casting throughout was perfect.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / UltraViolet Digital Copy) (2

A Very Harold & Kumar ChristmasThis movie was a lot better than I was expecting. It's dirty, raunchy, hilarious and will put you right in the Christmas mood. You don't need to re-watch the first two movies to understand this new one. They spoof the claymation genre as a tribute to the classic Christmas specials we grew up with. They give a dirty twist to that infamous scene from 'A Christmas Story'

Harold and Kumar aren't hanging out anymore and have new best friends with new lives. When Kumar receives a package meant for Harold, he takes it to him, and that's when the chaos begins. Throughout Christmas Eve night, they must find the perfect Christmas tree, deal with the Russian Mafia, befriend a robotic waffle-maker, and ride with Santa Claus in his sleigh. If you love dirty raunchy movies and Christmas movies, this is the perfect blend for you. I highly recommend A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS!!!

This is a movie designed for 3D as things fly into the camera. The story line picks up 2 years later. Kumar (Kal Penn), the med student, isn't a doctor because he can't pass the drug test. Harold (John Cho) is rich and successful. He has a beautiful Latino wife (Paula Garcés) who has a lot of baggage, mainly Danny Trejo is her dad. Trejo's mom was killed by Asians. Harold and Kumar both have a new sidekick. We have a competition of sidekicks. Through a mishap involving a huge joint, Danny Trejo's 12 foot home grown Christmas tree gets burned down and now the foursome are on a quest for a new 12 foot tree in the heart of the city on Christmas eve. They carry with them an infant who seems to like illegal drugs.

On their quest they encounter Adrian (Amir Blumenfeld) the daughter of a crime boss desperate to lose her virginity; an evil clay-mation Frosty the Snowman; the Russian Mafia (who play Mafia Wars on-line); a Waffle-bot; the real Santa; and of course the resurrected Neil Patrick Harris.

The humor, while low-brow and crude works in this film because it adds some originality to it.

F-bomb, sex, heavy drug use, nudity [Cassie Keller,Chernise Yvette, Paula Garcés (butt)] 5 star low brow comedy

I bought this because I was hungry for another 3D movie and it looked funny. It didn't disappoint! I haven't seen the first 2 Harold & Kumar movies, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this one. I laughed my butt off, and the 3D effects were plentiful. I'm always bummed when a 3D movie only offers added depth but no pop-out effects. This flick has both. If you're looking to add another 3D movie to your collection, I think you'll be happy with this one (unless you don't like like raunchy, politically incorrect humor and nudity in your movies).
