Jumpin Jack Flash (1986)

Jumpin Jack FlashLoved this movie when I first saw it in the theater, have had a soft spot for it since. When I saw it was coming to blu, I got excited and immediately pre-ordered it. Received it in the mail today and...wow...am I disappointed. I see no real difference in the video from the DVD (some, but not much)...the sound is a little better...but what is the WORST thing is that this is not just a "bare bones" blu ray...there isn't even a MENU. The movie starts right up...nothing when you hit the "menu" button or anything. There is NOTHING but the movie. This is the 2nd Anchor Bay blu ray that I have purchased with this happening (not even a freaking MENU...the other was "The Entity")...what is going on with this? How much can it cost to provide a menu with chapter stops or something...ANYTHING? This will be the last Anchor Bay blu ray purchase for me.

2 stars because I DO still like the movie, but dang...the blu ray release of "Jumpin Jack Flash" is the crap crap crap.

This movie as far as I am concerned is a classic and captures Whoopi Goldberg at her comedic best. Her timing and responses as a bank teller thrown into the spy world of cloak and dagger is both hysterical and makes for a good adventure. In addition, this film also portrays the first aspects of instant messaging and online communications. Lastly, if I am not mistaken, I believe this is Penny Marshall's directional debut in motion pictures. Therefore why only a three star rating?

This DVD produced by Anchor Bay is rather disappointing. There is absolutely nil in the form of special features, no trailer/preview for this feature (any other films), no documentaries and no commentary, which honestly wouldn't bother me if the DVD itself had a menu screen. When you put the disk in the DVD player a screen pops up and states if subtitles are desired to hit the "subtitle" button on your remote control. When the movie begins it does have a rather clear widescreen presentation, but coming from a company like Anchor Bay this is rather second-rate.

I can recall becoming very excited when some of my favorite obscure films would be released by Anchor Bay. Mainly because Anchor Bay usually pulls out the stops on their DVD releases, extra features, trailers, radio spots, interviews, etc. This 2013 DVD release is abysmal. Nevertheless, I am happy to have this great movie on DVD and will be keeping it in my collection. However, Anchor Bay really needs be ashamed of themselves about this release. For the first time ever, I am going to be thinking twice about buying future Anchor Bay releases.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2006)

Kiss Kiss Bang BangHarry's a burglar in New York who, to escape arrest, winds up auditioning for a part in a Joel Silver like film that's destined for Colin Farrell. He's whisked away to the phony world of LA, where every girl named "Jill" spells it "Jylle." At a fabulous cocktail party he meets Harlan Dexter, once a B-movie actor and now a very rich enterpreneur whose daughter has only recently returned from a long sojourn to Paris. Harry also meets his high school sweetheart, a girl who never gave him a toss back then, but now she's seeing him with new eyes. The two of them share an appreciation for the pulp novels of the 1950s and 1960s featuring a Mike Hammer type PI called "Jonny Gossamer."

KISS KISS BANG BANG is a lot of fun. Walking into the theater you don't expect such a rambunctious, talky, endlessly yakking movie. You have to be on your toes, narratologically speaking, the entire time, and don't try leaing your seat to use the restroom, you'll have missed probably the entire point of the movie. Does even Shane Black know the story he's written, and why the three women who meet their maker got so confused that neither the police, the detectives, nor the gang that killed them seem to be able to piece them apart, like the old shell game.

The movie is stunning to look at besides. The credits are impeccable; we've seen numerous movie credits designed to resemble the old time look of the Bond films, but this one, in rusty shades of orange and black, is stylish and exciting. In general the designers of the movie deserve awards. The use of the hotel Standard is brilliant

Downey Jr and Kilmer are both pretty entertaining, but the excitement here is the performance of Michelle Monaghan as Harmony Faith Lane (a name that, oddly enough, strings together the names of two of Buffy's betes noires).

As Harmony Miss Monaghan, a Denise Richards lookalike, shows a talent that can stand right up next to the fast talking dames of the thirties like Rosalind Russell or Carole Lombard, and plus she has a genuine American beauty tht makes it believable she could come from somewhere central, like Indiana. You root for her to succeed, even when she shows the more disagreeable sides to her personality.

I can imagine some people disliking the movie and its constant air of being in love with itself, and yet when the dust is cleared we are always searching for an American cinema with wit and flair, and here it is in this giant, heaping portion, and you would be a fool to turn away such bounty on account of its presumption. I hope it does well enough to merit numerous sequels, as THE THIN MAN did. It's on that level if you ask my opinion.

PS, what happened to Shannyn Sossamon? Seems like just yesterday she was Hollywood's it girl, enjoying leading lady parts in such films as A KNIGHT'S TALE or THE RULES OF ATTRACTION. Here she plays, get this, "Pink Hair Girl"? Are they trying to punish her for being beautiful and talented, or what?

Robert Downey Jr. has not been as quick-witted and riotously funny since he played in Chaplin. He and Val Kilmer turn out to be a comedy team as good as those in Mel Brooks' early movies. There are scenes that cause uproarious laughter in the theater. Like when Downey sticks his severed finger into the ice bucket and the dog eats it. Or when Kilmer's cell phone plays "I will survive" when it rings. Michelle Monaghan plays Downey's old childhood friend, Harmony. They meet again in L.A. and team up with Kilmer to solve a murder. The trio charm the audience and keeps the laughter at a high volume. And finally, Downey's asides to the audience in his role as Narator are hilarious. From stopping the film to explain something, to changing the typical noir ending by bringing back all the dead characters plus Elvis and Abe Lincoln. It was two hours of razor-sharp dialogue and brilliant comedy. Don't miss this one.

"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is so full of energy and forward propulsion that it often trips over its own frenzied notions and plot machinations. This is screenwriter ("Lethal Weapon") Shane Black's first film as director and he is very keen on making the most of this opportunity: the 3rd wall is smashed and cleared away, the story is told both in flash backs and in flash forwards and Robert Downey Jr. as Harry Lockhart narrates in deadpan fashion that manages to be extremely witty and droll on the one hand and banal and silly at others.

"KKBB" opens with an explosion of activity in which Harry a petty thief, while in the process of a robbery and running from the police, accidentally bursts into a room in which actors are being auditioned for a movie dealing with private eyes. He is thrust into service as an auditionee and is asked to screen test...moving closer to actually nabbing the movie role. And so it goes: one incredible and often hilarious plot twist after another.

Downey, always a charming performer and who may be a bit too old for this part, in that he is supposed to be the same age as the smart, funny and adorable Michelle Monaghan who plays his childhood friend, Harmony Faith Lane...a great name, by-the-way. But be that as it may, the interplay between Monaghan and Downey as well as that with Val Kilmer as Gay Perry, a gay P.I. (I kid you not) is priceless: all are operating on the very highest level of their performing careers.

Not every thing works in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" but at least Black, by way of his throw in everything but the kitchen-sink style of directing, exhibits the cojones to play with the conventions of the detective story/thriller movie and make it work...most of the time: you must often risk the ridiculous in order to achieve the sublime is a lesson that Black has seemed to have learned very well.

Once you realize this movie isn't a porno, it's actually pretty good. Yeah, I was disappointed at first, but instead of hunting down the red light district I actually decided to stay. Besides, porn is accessible 24/7, but a movie this funny only comes around once in a while.

The plot revolves around Harry Lockhart played by Robert Downey Jr., a petty thief turned aspiring actor who soon finds himself in the midst of an old fashioned film noir plot. Val Kilmer plays Gay Perry, a private detective who is hired to show Harry the ropes for his potential new role. When someone from Harry's past shows...actually, the plot is really just a MacGuffin for the two actors to spout off clever lines at one another, and the movie itself seems keenly aware of this. In fact, Robert Downey's character narrates the film complete with fourth wall shattering comments (such as referencing the audiences in Times Square). His narration could have come off as annoying, but thanks to the strong script and funny delivery it works perfectly.

The entire film is really just an excuse for these two actors to play off of each other, and they do a fantastic job. Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. can be two of the most frustrating actors. Sometimes they can seem so self-conscious that it's painful, and other times they can turn in a role that singlehandedly makes the movie (Val Kilmer in Tombstone for example). Here they're at the top of their game. They play off of each other perfectly. If you like smart sardonic humour, then you'll like this movie.

It's so difficult these days to find a good comedy that this movie felt refreshing. It feels like it has been over a decade since I've actually laughed out loud in a movie theatre. Most comedies are run by the Will Ferrell rule of comedy: if you yell it's automatically funnier. It's nice to know that someone out there thinks that a clever script can be funny too. (This is not a complete knock to Will Ferrell--he can be funny in the right role).

The qualities of this film don't stop at the humor. There's also some great send-up of film noir. For a noir fan like myself, this was merely icing on the cake. Not only does the film pay tribute to old fashion noir, but takes an opportunity to subvert it whenever it gets the chance. Film noir cliches are raised so they can be turned on their head.

Hopefully this film will get the audience it deserves when it comes out on DVD. It's easily one of the years funniest movies, and it's not even a straight up comedy.

I don't know, how do you not love a movie that includes lines like this one, about women in Los Angeles:

"I swear to God, it's like somebody took America by the East Coast, and shook it, and all the normal girls managed to hang on."

And that's what Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is like: Relentlessly clever dialogue, witty screenplay, extremely self-aware without crossing the line into being eye-glazing about it.

Essentially an update of a second-tier LA-based noir film, the film moves so quickly and is so funny that many audiences may not catch that they're watching a film that could have once starred Alan Ladd or Humphrey Bogart. There's the beaten-to-a-pulp detective in over his head, the rich movers and shakers who can crush him at will, the dream girl who's alternately sexually available and loathes him, dead bodies that get moved around, seemingly on their own and lots more standard bits.

Toss in Robert Downey, Jr. doing his best work in years, Val Kilmer, funny again for the first time in decades and the new-to-me-but-ought-to-be-a-star Michelle Monaghan, and you've got a solid, solid cast capable of making the clever script pop. Heck, there's even some footage from a truly awful 1980s Corbin Bernsen action movie, which isn't something you see every day.

It's hard to figure how this got overlooked in theaters, but no fans of buddy movies (the film is written and directed by the creator of the first -and vastly superior to the sequels -Lethal Weapon movie), Downey or Kilmer should miss this.

Sensationally great fun.

Grumpy Old Men (2009)

Grumpy Old MenThis review refers to the Warner Bros VHS of "Grumpy Old Men"..

One "Putz", one "Moron", and an eternal Sex Kitten, melt the Minnesota snows as well as your heart in this too fun flick that reunites the late great comedy team of, Jack Lemmon(the"Putz") and Walter Matthau(the "Moron").

They are neighbors John Gustafson and Max Goldman who have been taking swipes and snipes at each other for over 50 years. The gags and gaglines will have you rolling with laughter, as the curmudgeons' feud heats up snowed-in Minnesota, when the beautiful, free-spirited widowed Ariel(Ann Margret) moves in across the street. They'll do whatever it takes to outdo the other for her affections, but when near tragedy strikes, there is no question of their affection for each other.

Joining in the fun is Burgess Meredith, as the hysterically lecherous father of Lemmon(cover the kids ears when he's in the scene), Darryl Hannah and Kevin Pollack, their kids, who may also realize the feelings they've had for each other since the third grade, the wonderful Ozzie Davis, and the always brillant Buck Henry. It was directed by Donald Petrie, with music by Alan Silvestri.

The laughs don't end here though..as there is an equally funny sequel "Grumpier Old Men", with much of the same cast and the addition of the legendary and gorgeous Sophia Loren.

The VHS has a nice clear picture and is recorded in hi-fi. There's a great soundtrack including a wonderful rendition of "We're Having A Heat Wave" by Ella Fitzgerald. It is in a standard format. I did not see it avaiable with the choice of the theatrical release form, which would have been nice with all that snowy scenery(My only reason for four stars). This a memorable Lemmon/Matthau film and you'll love it in any format though.

We'll always have their wonderful films to make us laugh..have fun with this one....Laurie....P.S. Don't miss the laugh out loud outakes during the credits, stay till the very end!

Being a thirty-something woman, I thought, how could I possibly find a movie about two grumpy old men funny? Turns out, VERY EASILY! If I could give this movie TEN STARS, I would! This has to be my all-time, favorite comedy. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are at it again; creating that perfect "odd-couple" chemistry. This time, the story is set in snowy Minnesota, with Lemmon and Matthau, (two old-time rivals), competing for the attentions of the refreshingly eccentric, yet extremely attractive widow, who has just moved into their neighborhood. The writing in this film is excellent; the actor's comedic timing is pure genius, and the zingers never seem to stop! This movie is a classic! Don't be a putz buy it today!

Just picked it up today and couldn't wait to view...

The bad news first..

no bonus features...just a trailer. The good news? It is FINALLY in widescreen!! Now...the picture quality is what I was really wondering about. Its tough to judge because I don't know the source material but I think this is as good as they could do and frankly given the age of the actors , too sharp much of the time! I should say that its mostly available light looking and mostly drab and overcast so I think its pretty good as blu-rays go. I paid a bit over $10 and I'm delighted...sure I'd have been happy for some PR interviews the actors did as bonus items but for a crisp and finally Widescreen version of this movie I'm happy. Oh..I didn't bother to review the movie its been done enough....with Lemmon, Matthau, Meredith, Davis and Buck Henry ,not to mention nice support from Hannah and Pollak...at least a minor classic.

In 1993 Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau played their best roles in this movie together. This movie, "Grumpy Old Men" is a MASTERPIECE! It's funny, joyfull, and heartwarming. These two were the perfect match for an EXCELLENT movie like this. The plot of the movie is great. The setting of cold and snowy Wabasha, MN was a the perfect setting.

The movie starts out on a snowy morning with two rivaling neighbors John Gustufson (Lemmon) and Max Goldman (Matthau). These two have been at each other's throats since they were kids. They always insult each other like calling each other a putz, a moron, or even a schmuck and other rude names. Whatever the two do they compete against each other to be better. One of those things they compete against is they both ice fish everyday and Max always ends up with more fish than John. So one day after they finish fishing, Max has half a dozen fish and John only has two. So Max of course picks on him and John throws one of his dead fishes into Max's car which causes a terrible stench.

That night John is watching the lottery and Max has the same T.V. remote so while John's watching the numbers Max over in the next window switches the channel. Then John switches it back then Max does it again and again. Finally John finds out it's Max and Max's son Jake (Pollak) opens the window to make him apologize and when Max goes to the window, John sprays his garden hose at him. Will these two ever stop fighting?

Then the rivalry takes another step up when a beautiful new neighbor Ariel (Ann-Margret) moves in and catches the attention of Max and John. Ariel is a lovely, warm-hearted, spirited woman who Max and John start fighting over. Max takes her ice fishing where she catches a 3-foot fish that she actually THROWS BACK before Max can take a picture of it. Then John and Ariel have dinner together and then go snowmobiling together and eventually sleep together. MAX IS FURIOUS!!!

Now Max and John are out fishing and Max is thinking of how to seek revenge. So John is in his shanty when it starts moving. He looks out the window and Max is moving it with his car heading straight for THIN ICE. John jumps out and his shanty is sunk. Of course Max is in his car chanting, "Yeah!" The two finally have a brawl and John is convinced that Max deserves Ariel more than he does because John can't support her because his house is about to be taken away from the IRS.

Will John get her or will Max? This movie is a great comedy everyone can enjoy. It's very touching and loving and is full of laughs. Your comedy collection is not complete without "Grumpy Old Men." This is a 5-Star MASTERPIECE!

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau rank among the greatest on-screen duos of all time, and this movie is a great example of their brilliant chemistry. They're both very capable dramatic actors, and each has an Academy Award as proof, but their signature trademark will always be their comedic ability.

In this movie, Lemmon and Matthau play the roles of John and Max, respectively. John and Max have been next-door neighbors their whole lives, and though they have an extremely hostile love/hate relationship, they remain each other's best friend. Their hostility stems from decades before when John wound up marrying the girl they both loved. Both are now widowers who live alone in their separate houses, and a woman named Ariel (Ann-Margret) moves into the house across the street. Both men are immediately smitten by Ariel, and it leads to a rehashing of the same hostile feelings they once held for each other in their youth.

While the plot may seem like heavy material, it really isn't. The story is presented in a extremely touching yet light-hearted way. Both John and Max are extremely loveable, and the audience is made to feel sorry for them because both are lonely in their old age. The only flaw in this movie is in the plausability of Ariel actually having romantic feelings for either of these two men. She's a relatively young woman and energetic woman, and the fact that she has these two old men fighting for her attention doesn't seem quite believable.

Regardless, this is an excellent movie that I definitely recommend.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2010)

Scott Pilgrim vs. The WorldFirst things first, it was Not a cut and paste of the books.

It was as funny, as innovative, as lovable, as heartfelt, and as humble as the books.

My favorite part of the books though, was that they were just really fun. I felt a smile on my face while I read it.

The movie version doesn't lose that.

Some characters are far gayer (weird, I expected to see a red line under that word), and some characters are far less.

Some lost face time and others gained, but I can't think of a single Book-to-Movie edit that was a bad call. (considering they had to cut about 75% of all character development/back stories)

It feels inappropriate to use the same old words and phrases to praise a movie that was slathered with completely new things I've never seen in a movie or script. I owe Edgar Wright and Brian Lee O'Malley an attempt though...

-Any one scene from this movie could be viral on YouTube on its own.

-My 'Love the Movie' to 'Hate the Wait til DVD' Ratio is equal at ' : '

-If there'd been a 15 ft tall facebook "Like" button at the end of the movie, I would've thrown my full weight against it.

-There were parts were I wanted to ignore the movie just to have something new to watch when I see it again in a few days.

-I'm dude-pregnant with the movie's baby.

This movie easily makes my Top 10.

If you haven't read the books, you'll only understand about 98% of the plot and 96% of the jokes.

I'll save a spolier-laden critique of the movie for at least a week or two after the movie.

What's important now is that you understand how hard this movie does all the undefinable things it does.

Rating: Awesome

(How many reviews will have that in them? Over/Under: 249.5)

[review taken from ]

I'd never heard of this movie or the book that it was apparently based on, but watched it last night. This movies is a weirdly appealing mishmash of twenty-something angst, a comic book plot, videogame fight sequences and hard-driving punk rock. It's also one of the funniest movies I've ever seen with a huge number of laugh out loud sequences and dialog, example:

Scott, picking up a guitar: "I wrote a song about you."

(plays a tender, haunting song mostly repeating the name Ramona)

Ramona, after song ends: "That was nice, let me know when you've finished it."

Shot of Scott looking perplexed.

Ramona: "Back then I was bi-curious."

Female Evil-ex: "Now I'm BI-FURIOUS!"

I'm not going to get into the plot of the movie, which is mostly irrelevant anyway. This film is just an escapist roller coaster. Forget about anything making sense and enjoy the ride. It's a blast.

NOTE: This is just reviewing the theatrical release, not the DVD or Blu-ray.

It was with very little fanfare that I went to see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on opening night. The ads were never really appealing to me and I felt like Michael Cera was being typecast so I figured this movie would be a flop. Still, there was enough positive buzz that I agreed to come along when a friend wanted to go and I'm floored at how opposite of a reaction I had to this film. Not only is it probably the biggest surprises of my life as far as movies go (not plot-wise, just in my feelings about it), but it's hands down one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in a movie theater.

The plot of Scott Pilgrim is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the trailers: Michael Cera is Scott Pilgrim, who has fallen in love with a very alluring girl who, as it so happens, has 7 evil exes who have banded together to ensure that no one dates her if they can't. You really have to go into the movie accepting that this is the plot because it's not anything deeper than that, and that's a big part of what I love about it. This is one of the few movies I've seen in a long while that understands exactly what it needs to do and really nails it. It focuses on a few things and blows them out of the park. So even though the romance story is never fully fleshed out, it's the first movie I've seen that has felt like a comic book and a video game have come to life, slept together, and produced a child on the big screen.

I don't know how true it is to the comic book, but that's irrelevant because it stands on its own as something really smart if you can appreciate the references and things it tries to parody. You don't have to be a gamer or a comic book fan to enjoy the film, you're just guaranteed to love it if you are either. I never thought I'd see a movie that got so many things right about video games everything from nonsensical fights to collecting coins where it doesn't make sense to a ton of subtle things that are just elegantly done. It's either subtle or obviously over-the-top, it never beats a joke to death. I laughed a lot from even before the movie formally started but I also saw very few promotional materials.

Aside from those facets, the music is perfect for the movie. I almost felt like it had as much music as a musical without the baggage that would entail. The cast really contributing to pulling off the music though. I believed in them in their roles, as crazy as the world they lived in ended up being. I believed their passion for their music, and that was a cool feeling. The way they weaved music into the storyline was truly clever.

I can't leave out how much heart this movie had either. I don't mean gushy have-a-good-cry heart, I just mean that it actually makes you feel good to be a nerd if you're a nerd. It makes you want to go out and jam out on your guitar or play Street Fighter or something I just felt pumped and enamored with how much the director seemed to love music and video games and comics.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is a movie everyone will love. I can't imagine anyone hating it because it just makes you feel so good walking out of it, but I can see parts of it being harder to appreciate without being in your 20s or early 30s. It is somewhat of a niche movie, but I wouldn't be ashamed to show it to anyone (assuming they're at least a teenager). I will say that the writing is weak at times. Even though I did identify somewhat with the romance, it was still at times handled a little strangely. I can see people taking issue with the characters, but I actually liked how non-traditional they were. They weren't people you could totally peg down, but in a good way. One minor gripe I had was that the ending was possibly a little more drawn out than it needed to be, but I didn't really mind that much.

This movie is easily an A+ to me, and I urge you to please go and see it. It's only done like $10 million and I think it'll make it up over the course of its run in theaters and on home video, but I feel bad that the makers may not feel the love from the box office that I felt for this movie. I feel silly having had such a strong positive reaction to a romantic comedy action movie that appeals to the 12-year-old inside of me, but I can't lie: I enjoyed this film and can't wait to get it on Blu-ray.

Scott Pilgrim, Canadian slacker, has broken hearts before and had his own heart broken one too many times, but now he seems to have reached a new low. He's 22, between jobs and playing bass in a not-so-great band, and he's dating a high schooler. Sure, her name is Knives Chow, which everyone has to admit is kind of a cool name, and she's got mad skills in the arcade but they haven't even kissed, and they probably shouldn't, and everyone around him knows this is not really moving on, and it's not fair to the young woman whose heart he is sure to break. Sure enough, he does decide to move on the moment he sets eyes on the colorful and enigmatic girl of his dreams (who also happens to be around his age): but she's got some serious baggage. In order to date her, he has to defeat, in arcade game style mortal combat, her seven evil exes (all played with panache by a number of cameo stars).

It's like a colorfully stylized musical, except instead of breaking into song when conflicts arise or emotions boil, they break out impossible kungfu moves, complete with colorful Batman-tv-era "kerplunks" and "pows" written onto the screen. I read a New York Times review from an unimpressed game critic who seemed to want it to mean something, or to better reflect the reality of contemporary video games. Maybe it doesn't do those things, but I don't think it needs to. My wife and I saw it and walked out enchanted and amused. (My only complaint is that I thought Scott Pilgrim and Knives Chow were in fact a far better match than he and the bright-haired Ramona Flowers. I just never saw the sparks between Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead so that in this unrealistic fantasy that was the one thing that really felt fake.) Hollywood will always be telling love stories and I hope that every once in a while they get around to making them as inventive and funny as Edgar Wright managed to make this one.
