Grown Ups (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2010)

Grown UpsI loved this movie. The casting was great. All the characters were lovable and it reminded me of how I grew up as a kid. I thought it was definitely entertaining for people of all ages but especially those of us that grew up in a time where there were no computers, no cell phones, and we had to come up with our own games to entertain us. (without getting killed)It's an enjoyable, entertaining movie with a happy ending and it promotes spending time together as a family and the importance of good friends. What more could you ask for?? I highly recommend this movie. I saw it twice and I can't wait to see it again.

***1/2

When it comes to mainstream Hollywood comedies, we've all too often found that the quality of a cast is in inverse proportion to the quality of the film (i.e., "He's Just Not That Into You"). That being the case, I had expected "Grown Ups" which features the likes of Adam Sandler, Salma Hayek, Kevin James, Maria Bello, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, David Spade and Steve Buscemi in starring roles to be a real cinematic turkey. Imagine my shock, then, when the movie turned out to be, for the most part at least (and we'll get to the qualifiers in a moment), a surprisingly genial, laid-back and likable movie that generates a decent number of laughs without breaking too much of a sweat.

That is a particularly noteworthy achievement given that Sandler, not exactly known for either subtlety or restraint, is not only the star of the film but co-author of the screenplay as well (along with Fred Wolf). But somehow Sandler and company (the movie was directed by Dennis Dugan) have avoided the material-given temptation of going overly-broad with the humor, choosing instead to effectively downplay things most of the way.

Sandler plays Lenny Feder, a hotshot Hollywood agent with a fashion designer wife (Hayek) and two children, who spends a weekend in the country with a group of his basketball-playing chums and their families when the boys' beloved coach from thirty years ago passes away. The guys were all part of a championship team in 1978, and they've come together to honor the man who led them through the winning season, as well as to catch up with what each of them has been doing in the interim.

"Grown Ups" is far from a perfect comedy. For every sharply humorous insight it offers about the responsibility that comes with maturity, there's a crass joke or gross-out sight-gag to counterbalance it. It's almost as if the writers just couldn't help themselves, as if it were a part of their authorial DNA.

That being said, there's much to like about this movie, particularly the performances and the sweetness it conveys when it's NOT being juvenile and crass.

I desperately wanted to enjoy Kevin James in Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I still believe it was only his lack of a strong supporting cast that kept it from being truly funny and was also what made it woefully thin on laughs. This is thankfully not the case with Grown Ups. Here Kevin James is well supported by an excellent comedy team and it works very well. My wife reluctantly went with me to see Grown Ups saying that she didn't like "slapstick comedies". Well, she laughed much more than I have heard laugh her in a very long time and she came away saying that she really enjoyed the film. The film has done very well at the box office despite many negative reviews (as did Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and it does seem to be much more popular with filmgoers than film critics. I personally think it is a much better and much funnier film than Couples Retreat. It is hard to think of Kevin James as any character other than his The King of Queens "Doug Heffernan" and David Spade really just seems to be basically playing a character much like his Rules of Engagement one, Russell in Grown Ups. An added bonus for me in Grown Ups is the presence of the very lovely Maria Bello as the wife of Kevin James. I like the film very much and I had a great time. I will definitely get it on DVD and I hope there will be a lot of bonuses, especially some deleted scenes and maybe even a gag reel.

I recently had the pleasure of watching "Grown Ups" on a long bus ride and found it captivating. With "Grown Ups 2" about to premier in theaters, I wanted to get "ahead of the curve" and drafted some script-notes for "Grown Ups 3". Mr. Bezos, please forward to Adam Sandler or his brothers in the movie.

GROWN UPS 3

-----------

Getting ready for retirement and with newly born grand-kids, five friends return to their old summer cabin for a weekend of relaxing and reminiscing.

* Right off the bat, Salma Hayek, no longer attractive enough to play Adam Sandler's fiery latina wife, is replaced by Salena Gomez. Gomez maintains the same accent and persona as Hayak, and the only acknowledgement of the switch is in any restaurant scenes where Gomez only orders off of the kid's menu.

* On their way to the cabin, the gang bumps into a pack of local teenage bad-boys at a gas station that taunts them for being old and overweight and employed. Sandler, thinking that experience will triumph over youth, boldly challenges the pack to a sporting event of some sort and the guys half-heartedly support him. The audience collectively wonders "How will the guys make it out of this one?".

* In an exposition scene, Chris Rock's mother-in-law (Mama Ronzoni) suffers a fatal heart-attack while sitting in the porch swing or something. No one notices and the gang continues to confuse the smell of human decay for her usual flatulence, adding a whole new dimension of humor to the ensuing cavalcade of fart gags (eg: when Chris Rock exclaims that "It smells like someone died out here", etc). In a post-credit gag the Rock family returns home only to remember that they left Mama Ronzoni on the porch.

* The gang practices for their upcoming basketball tournament, running passing and shooting drills, though it is clear that they are in very poor shape. At some point, the basketball is replaced with a basketball made out of actual dog poop (!) but the guys don't notice and continue to run drills and each of them gets splattered with dog poop that goes all over their faces and in their mouths even and it's totally gross but it's all shown in slow motion and also Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" is playing the whole time.

* In a call-back to the running "Grown Ups" gag where Kevin James had difficulty urinating, James tells the gang that he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent a double orchiectomy. He painfully retells the harrowing details of his failed chemotherapy treatments and post-operation bouts with depression over the loss of his manhood; weeping over the eventual realization that his wife (still played by Maria Bello) has never looked at him the same way. In an extended gag, the gang assaults James' in the groin with various oversized props, marveling at his complete lack of pain.

* The guys decide to take their kids to a water park but then one of the local teenage bad-boys (from before) makes it so all the water on the slides is turned into dog poop water and they all have to slide down on the poop slide in slow motion. In a call-back to the training scene Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" plays again.

* As the gang prepares a traditional family dinner, a scene full of broad physical comedy involving sausages and apple strudel culminates in the revelation that David Spade has always been a crypto-Nazi and leader of his local chapter of the Aryan Nations. After a meaningful conversation about diversity Spade learns his lesson and all is forgiven.

* One of the grand-kids leaves a roller-skate on the stairs and Chris Rock takes a big fall down the stairs and into the kitchen, burning his crotch on a hot frying pan. He tries to cool himself with some of the leftover frozen sausages but Gomez spots him through the window and does the "Oh!" face and the audience laughs and laughs.

* Unaware that Mama Ronzoni is dead, Rob Schneider confesses to her that his wife and two beautiful daughters are not on an African safari as he had claimed but have actually been locked up in his basement for the past decade out of fear that they will be "defiled by the craven modern world". Schneider thanks Mama for being such a patient listener and ominously concludes that he now knows "how to protect [his] family, once and for all". He also advises Mama to "please cut down on the beans", though we the viewer know the true source of that smell.

* Sandler and the gang finally play their game of flag-football against the local teenage bad-boys and win by that Kevin James scores in his painless cancerous crotch. Sandler closes the movie with a speech on the values of friendship and family.

Without Men (2011)

Without MenSome movies beg indulgence form the audience. This movie should beg forgiveness from the people who financed it. Based on a novel by James Canon and adapted for the screen and directed by Gabriela Tagliavini, the story (what little there is of it) concerns the women of a remote Latin American town who are forced to pick up the pieces and remake their world when all the town's men are forcibly recruited by communist guerrillas. They are devastated that they have to do `men's work' such as cleaning the town and governing the village. The local priest (Oscar Nuñez) prays to God and is instructed that he must populate the village with new men by sleeping with all the women of childbearing age. Unable to perform his duties, he is ostracized. One woman (Eva Longoria) becomes mayor and the women gradually make the town a women's place yes, even to the point of deciding that physical relationships between women are just fine and clothing is optional. A side bar story that simply doesn't fit is the presence of a reporter (Christian Slater) who is sent by his boss (Camryn Manheim) to get a front page article about the little town of only women. Et cetera.....

The lines these poor actors are giving are so poor that they are embarrassing, but the level of acting in general is on the junior high school level. Slater has so little to do that it seems as though he was hired simply to sell tickets in the theaters. This is a `must miss' little bit of deflated fluff. Grady Harp, April 12

I'm always up for an independent movie. Never quite know what you're gonna get.

This one was a pleasant surprise. It's a cute comedy about what happens when all the men in small village are shanghaied off to war and the women have to take charge. They find that they're capable of all kinds of new things, including finding love. It's light, slightly over the top and never takes itself too seriously. There's some genuine lol moments and lots of others that'll give you a chuckle. (If the priest doing his "duty" doesn't start you laughing, you're wound too tight!)

If you're in the mood for something light, sweet and funny, give this one a try.

This was a bad movie with few redeeming qualities. Would not rent and am sorry for the purchase. The story started out with potential and of course they added a man to the mix, making it limited in scope and lacking in execution.

Funny Farm (1988) / Spies Like Us (1985) (Double Feature) (2010)

Funny Farm / Spies Like UsUpdate on 11/12/11: There is a comment posted to this review that explains that this Disc is actually the correct version of the movie. Please read it if this issue concerns you.

'Spies Like Us' is a great movie. I bought this version thinking that it would have a wider view than my already purchased dvd which I could only find in full frame. I just compared it to my dvd. For this blu ray, all they did was chop some off from the top and bottom to give it the widescreen look. I thought people might to like to know.

While not classic comedies, "Funny Farm" and "Spies Like Us" have their funny moments. Both are very enjoyable Chevy Chase movies with his usual relaxed style, a combination of straight man and funny guy. He's teamed with equally funny Dan Aykroyd in the John Landis directed "Spies" which is sprinkled with some very funny cameos. The very good news about this new BD release is that both movies are presented in widescreen for the first time on home video.

These movies were originally filmed in and correctly framed for 4:3. A 16:9 pan & scan crop was shown in the theaters and is what you get in this bluray release. For me the 16:9 looks overly chopped and not polished at times. Movies the were originally filmed in a wide screen format normally have better framing. Also this release still only has stereo audio. Both the DVD 4:3 and the bluray 16:9 will get the job done but I prefer the un-cropped version.

Taken together, I almost have to give this a 3 "Funny Farm" is funny in its own way, but it will never measure up to "Spies Like Us," the movie that is caught between "us" and "them." My parents laugh out loud at "Funny Farm," and I can laugh at it, but they will never laugh so hard as I do at "Spies Like Us." It's so awesome. It's what 80s spy comedies were meant to be. If my parents don't get that, then that's because they grew up in the generation right between the two movies. I like them both, but "Spies Like Us" will always hold a special place in my heart. "Doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor..."

Well, I haven't watched Funny Farm yet, I purchased this BD for Spies like US...a comedy classic as far as I'm concerned. :) So, in a way I feel like it deserves a BD of it's own, so that was kind of a bummer.. It was nice getting an extra ~i guess~ but feel like SLU would be nice with even a simple "making of" or behind the scenes featurette instead of just throwing in an extra movie that somehow makde it feel like it's status was lowered.

Anyway, SLU....great characters, great funny lines and a lot of subtle humor throughout. It's just a original story with great twists, great locations and some beautiful women.

As far as quality goes, it's a big jump over the DVD i had. So if you have a DVD of SLU and and wondering if it's worth purchasing the BD... it's a no brainer...wider (original) format, better image quality..all you'd expect with HD.

~HOWEVER~ once again (like packing this great film with Funny Farm) i feel they didn't do SLU justice because it could have used some color grading and correction) i seems like they just pushed the "auto correct" button. For example, the scene right after they cheated on the test and they're in the office being reprimanded/promoted...visually that was pretty dark with "squashed"...the blacks were too heavy with too much contrast. Outdoor scenes seem to be OK however. I remember the DVD being overall a bit lighter with less heavy handed contrast.

Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait for the 4K version to come out :) by that time (very soon i hope :) ) SLU will have received it's true status of cult comedy classic and they will decide to make a featurette and spent some time on adjusting the colors/contrast. Fingers crossed~!

Volver (2006)

VolverA truly beautiful film! I was mesmerized throughout by the great writing, directing, cinematography, and above all the outstanding performances of all the wonderful actresses. One of the legendary grand dames of Spanish cinema Carmen Maura (the Judy Dench of Spain) gives a brilliant performance in a supporting role as Irene, the tortured matriarch trying to reconcile with her long, lost daughters. Penelope Cruz gives a performance that in almost any other year would have reaped her not only the Academy Award for Best Actress, but every other award known to man-kind as well (however, having seen the movie "The Queen" it was no doubt Helen Mirren's year). I have never seen Ms. Cruz even come close to being as great as she is in this fine film. She is not only breathtakingly beautiful as our main heroine Raimunda (ala Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani) but she seems to glide across the screen with such balletic grace and effortlessness that you can't take your eyes off of her for a second. The scenes between her and Maura in particular are simply sublime beyond words. The other three main actresses also give outstanding performances in supporting roles Yohana Cobo (Paula, Raimunda's teenage daughter), Blanca Portillo (Agustina), and in particular Lola Duenas (Sole, Raimunda's loyal and lonely younger sister).

This is not a 'chick flick'. This is not one of those boring, esoteric, foreign films that you need to be of European descent to truly understand and appreciate. Pedro Almodar truly weaves together an absolutely wonderful story with a great message as well. These women exude such strength and inner beauty that it is almost impossible to not empathize with each one of them. I was pleasantly suprised when I walked out of the movie theatre and I am planning on purchasing this DVD soon. Also, anyone who has been to Spain and fell in love with the people and culture (as I did) will truly love this film! It is such an enchanting, charming land full of benevolent and passionate souls.

It is definitely a five star movie in my opinion and one of the finest films of it's kind that I have seen in years.

There is a great scene in Pedro Almodovar's latest, "Volver" that encapsulates all that this wonderful, resonant movie is about: Raimunda (a sexy, earthy Penelope Cruz who has never been better on screen) sings a gypsy/flamenco style song, having not sang in public for many years but in possession of a gorgeous singing voice, while her mother Irene (the legendary Carmen Maura), thought to be dead , discretely listens from afar. Almodovar's camera cuts between mother and daughter, both totally committed emotionally to the scene, both recalling their former lives together, estranged for years but still possessing that particular brand of love that exists only between a Mother and her daughter, both longing for lives without trials and tribulations and fear, lives without problems, without cares. "Volver" (which means to return, to come back) is nothing if not about returning to the innocence of youth: to a time when Love abounded and came without a price and without consequences. But "Volver" is also about second chances, re-tooling you life albeit, Almodovar-style which always involves some manner of the strange, the violent sometimes and the weird. This line towards re-tooling/re-imagining your life is not a straight one by any means but a zigzagged one going from "a" to "g" more often than from "a" to "b."

In "Volver" we have the extraordinary character of Raimunda played to the hilt by Penelope Cruz who has always been better in her native Spanish than she's ever been in her English films. Raimunda is strong, decisive, hard-working, married to a lout, a devoted mother and sister of Soledad (Lola Duenas) with whom she shares a strong bond now that their parents are dead.

"Volver" is a film almost totally without men except Paco, Raimunda's husband and Paula's (Raimunda's daughter)father who leaves the film early on and as such it reminds me of the Neo-Realist film classics of the WW2 era, "Open City" and the Sophia Loren starring "Two Women." But in this world without men that is "Volver" nothing seems amiss because the world that Almodovar has created is rich with well defined woman's roles: compassionately written and more importantly profoundly and deeply executed by the ensemble of actors that Almodovar has assembled: Cruz, Maura, Duenas and Blanca Portillo as Angelina.

Once again with "Volver," Almodovar has returned to the world of women alone and it is a film primarily about but definitely not only for women: their power over us, their weaknesses, their hopes, their desires. But "Volver" also shows us that mysterious inner core that all women possess which gives them an edge, a wisdom that men don't have. Call it maturity, call it a security, call it a special strength. You can even call it "feminine intuition." But, call it what you like, it's there, only women have it and lucky man, Pedro Almodovar is on a first name basis with it.

I've never been a big fan of Penlope Cruz but this film, I think, has changed that! I have been, however, a fan of Pedro Almodovar for 20 years and he gives us another strong tale centered around a group of women that involves murder, incest, ghosts and much more!

Thankfully, we see the wonderful Carmen Maura reunited with her director of "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". She really shows her talent as an actress as the mother of Raimunda (Cruz) and Sole (Lola Duenas).

The story is set around to Raimunda and Sole, two sisters who lost their parents in a fire about four years earlier. Raimunda is married to a crude drunk and Sole is a lonely young woman separated from her husband. After a tragic event occurs for Raimunda and her daughter, Paula (Yohana Cobo), Raimunda is forced to keep a secret to protect her daughter and herself. The one thing that bonds all the women is the secrets they keep. Irene (Maura), their mother, has a secret that could give the terminally ill Agustina (Blanca Portillo), who is a childhood friend of the sisters, an answer to the whereabouts of her absent mother.

The actresses in this film do AMAZING work. The story centers around Penelope Cruz who deserves the Oscar nomination she received. Carmen Maura, as usual, does a great job and another stand out is Blanca Portillo as the long suffering and loyal friend to the sisters.

If I have one criticism about the film, it just seem to end so abruptly. Other than that, Almodovar gives us another film about women that is well worth the price of your ticket as well as an addition to your dvd library. Highly recommended.

Penelope Cruz gives a standout performance as Raimunda in this strange tale of a village where most of the men are lovingly tended to in cemetery plots. The story takes many twists and turns, but principally this is a tale about Raimunda's indefatigable spirit and protection of her daughter. Almodovar captures the rhythm and feeling of small town life in Spain as Raimunda enlists the services of her neighbors to revive a restaurant, which becomes the hub of activities while the owner is away. In so doing, Raimunda hopes to disguise the sinister events that have taken place. Raimunda's sister, Sole, harbors a blithe spirit of sorts, whose return provides the premise for the movie and eventually answers many questions that are put forward. Augustina completes this provincial triptych as a hippie of sorts, who is forced to come to terms with her life when she finds out she has cancer. The characters feed off each other in typical Almodovarian fashion, but it is a conventional movie by his quixotic standards, and one of his most satisfying efforts, as it is sure to appeal across a broad spectrum of viewers, especially given Penelope Cruz' excellent performance.

Pedro Almodóvar, the king of Spanish cinema is back with Volver, a film with a lot of humor, but also the finest drama.

The story, written by Almodóvar himself, is original and has great twists and surprises for you to enjoy.

The story in short without any spoilers:

Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) is a young mother and together with her sister Sole (played by Lola Dueñas) who has an illegal barbershop, they always clean their mother and father's grave, who have passed away long ago. They both have their own problems, and Raimunda experienceses a big one together with her daughter Paula (played by Yohana Cobo),which I'm not gonna tell, you'll see.

But then, suddenly, the mother (played by Carmen Maura) returns from her grave as a spirit, because she has some unfinished business to complete before she can rest in peace. So with their mother walking around, some big problems here, and some little problems there, Volver is a delighted comedy and drama at the same time that will entertain you endlessly!

Penélope Cruz is absolutely fantastic in this film. The problem with her acting in Hollywood is that she can never really show that she can really act because of the language that doesn't come out as fluently as Spanish (Not that she is terrible when she acts in English, she is a wonderfull actress, but still, you don't feel like it is her 100% because of the language barriar). Now, in her own language, Penélope shows she can really act and steals the show. She really gave me goosbumps in some of her scenes because she can act emotionally very realisticly which absolutely grabbed me. Expect acting from the highest level!

The rest of the cast is also fantastic and they all act great. It is an absolute star cast where nobody is out of place or not good: maqnificent job!

Even though the film is completely spoken in Spanish, you'll have no problem getting into this film. When the first scene appeared on the screen, I was so into it, that I was not even noticing that I was still reading the subtitles. And thats the power of the Spanish cinema. Volver shows how great Spanish movies can be. It is a fantastic film that will make you laugh, cry and entertain you till the very end.

I don't know how it will go with you, but after seeying this film in the cinema, I can offically say that I am sold to the Spanish cinema: Mucho Gracias!

So I will probally Volver (return) to the cinema for more Spanish delight in the future!

Enjoy and Let yourself be grabbed by the story, the emotion, the comedy and the acting: entertainment from the highest sort. So go and see this, cause it will be in your mind for some time!
