The Rum Diary (2011)

The Rum DiaryThis movie is good. I've read the book several times, and yes, there were changes made, but I still loved it. When transferring book to film, changes are always made. It's the awful truth, I know. People want to compare this film to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Guess what? It's not. AND, it's not supposed to be. I'm a Thompson fan, through and through. I've read his work for years. I think the characters were spot on. This movie isn't for people who just want to see Johnny Depp on screen, or those who want another film in the likes of Vegas. Ribisi was AMAZING to watch in this movie. I really loved it, can't wait to get my copy and add it to my collection.

Johnny Depp plays reporter Paul Kemp in Hunter S. Thompson's the Rum Diary. The movie borderlines on insanity as Kemp becomes drunk and drunker in a 1960s Puerto Rico. While not as manic as the other Hunter S Thompson films the Rum Diary has it's own narrative rhythm. Paul meets his eccentric coworkers, gets drunk, has crazy adventures, gets drunker etc. Johnny Depp's acting is good, one gets to see an interesting portrait of a writer trying to find his voice while he is trying to get plastered. There are undercurrents of Hunter S. Thompson present in Depp's portrayal of Kemp which starts bubbling to the surface near the end. there are funny antics going throughout the movie just not nearly as sporadic as the other two. all in all the movie is good and if you are a Johnny Depp fan Or a Hunter S. Thompson fan check this movie out and see if it can entertain you.

To appreciate the quality of this rambling little film that is actually based on an episode in the life of Hunter S. Thompson the following biographical information is helpful: `Hunter Stockton Thompson (1937 2005) was an American journalist and author who wrote The Rum Diary (published in1998), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971), Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 (1973), The Curse of Lono (1983), and Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (1966). He is credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories. He is known also for his lifelong use of alcohol, LSD, mescaline, and cocaine (among other substances); his love of firearms; his inveterate hatred of Richard Nixon; and his iconoclastic contempt for authoritarianism. In 1960 Thompson moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to take a job with the sporting magazine El Sportivo, which folded soon after his arrival. Thompson applied for a job with the Puerto Rico English-language daily The San Juan Star, but its managing editor, future novelist William J. Kennedy, turned him down. Nonetheless, the two became friends and after the demise of El Sportivo, Thompson worked as a stringer for the New York Herald Tribune and a few stateside papers on Caribbean issues with Kennedy working as his editor. While suffering a bout of health problems, he committed suicide in 2005 at the age of 67.'

In the film version of Thompson's autobiographical book, Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean under toupeed editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). He is accompanied by the staff photographer Sala (Michael Rispoli), the drunken staff writer Moberg (Giovanni Ribisi) in his discovery of the many wonders of Puerto Rico, not the least of which is a group of entrepreneurs lead by Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) who happens to be living with the stunning Chenault (Amber Heard) who Paul is attracted to and a series of disreputable business men bent on `touristifyng' a neighboring island. Paul is a drunk and finds innumerable distractions and challenges as he tries to worm his way through the playing field of lost souls.

The story is Hunter S. Thompson all the way and Bruce Robinson has adapted Thompson's book in much the same way the novelist communicates: Robinson also directs. Depp, as usual, manages to make the strange lead character not only interesting but also ingratiating. The supporting cast is solid. The film gets off track many times, but as pure entertainment it is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours watching Depp create another memorable character based on life! Grady Harp, February 12

The "Rum Diary" takes us to 1960 Puerto Rico, as we fly in to the tune of "Volare" aboard a small engine plane with Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). He's the "fresh meat" for the local paper, a journalist and self-proclaimed "failed author", although throughout this movie you will find him dedicated to his post in his own fashion.

The first day of his new job, he is still quite drunk from the rum-soaked night previously and the editor-in-chief Lotterman (Richard Jenkins) is already questioning his morals and capability. Of course, we are seeing Johnny Depp portray a character that is intoxicated the major part of this movie and I think is hilarious handling it.

Kemp is introduced to Rob Sala (Michael Rispoli), the 'staff recorder' and later to Moburg (Giovanni Ribisi) the 'religious correspondent'. These titles are certainly a laugh in themselves as they are not even close to what these guys are up to. They go in and out of the paper's office, argue with Lotterman and go off in whatever misguided direction that they came from. Watch Ribisi's character in this, as I think he steals the show in several places.

The plot is quite simple and I'm guessing a little more so than some people may be expecting from the movie. Kemp was brought into a sinking ship of a paper to appease the locals and try to keep it afloat. This is a kind of slack-off position for Kemp to have to handle, one he does with gusto.

The 'problem' comes when Kemp and his buddies begin to care about the paper and the people of San Juan, then start to believe in their rights as readers of it. Aaron Eckhart does a great job as the arrogant cad he is here. Amber Heard does a good job as his girlfriend, and Kemp's object of desire also.

Depp's mannerisms, facial expressions and sarcastic humor are all spot on. I definitely can see why he was personally behind the project. One does not have to be a Hunter S. Thompson fan to enjoy this movie whatsoever. It is not like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" as it may appear several people are comparing this to. Same author, different situation (semi-autobiographical account)--although one hallucinogenic type scene does take place between Kemp and his close buddy, Sala.

Moburg floats in and out of the head state he is in to end up really enjoying Kemp, and gains a respect for himself too. Eventually these three are sharing an apartment for awhile. The deluded conversations are priceless.

I enjoyed this movie very much by just taking it for what it is, a Johnny Depp comedy/drama. The other actors in this movie add a lot of regional color and flavor while Depp's two cohorts (Rispoli and Ribisi) add an overdose of alcoholic comedy. Some of the situations that these three get into are over the top and make you think, 'Is this really based on a true story?' Yep.

In 2011, 13 years after first portraying a Hunter S. Thompson doppelganger in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Johnny Depp took on two roles that referenced the controversial writer: one by way of an animated chameleon that took its cues from Fear and Loathing's Raoul Duke, and the other by way of an adaptation of Thompson's semi-autobiographical debut novel, The Rum Diary. While the former was considered a success, the latter, unfortunately, split critics in much the same way that Fear and Loathing did. The Rum Diary follows journalist Paul Kemp as he travels to Puerto Rico to write for a local paper. While there, Paul is tasked with writing a favorable story about an American entrepreneur intent on exploiting the island for commercial gain, and Paul must contemplate the murky moral nature of the piece. I felt that Depp was as committed to the role as ever, and that the film was colorful and amiable enough, but I was also a bit put off by the rambling source material, which made for an unfocused narrative. Fans of both Thompson and Depp may enjoy the flick, but there are no guarantees here.

The Cannonball Run (2011)

The Cannonball RunCannonball Run is a guilty pleasure. No one would ever say it's a good movie, but it's a like train wreck, you find yourself staring. Burt Reynolds tries to live his glory days of Smokey and The Bandit, bringing along the same Director, Hal Needham as well as a slew of falling stars to prop him up. Its as if all of them knew their careers were sliding and it was one last ditch effort to make a great noise. Don't get me wrong, many of these people are talented. Lets explain the premise first. The 'Run' is an auto street (or highway) race, based closely on a real race that was run throughout the 70s that went from New York to California. It was highly illegal, and probably a lot a fun. There is even an appearance by one of the original drivers, Brock Yates, who is now an editor for Car & Driver Magazine and makes an amusing appearance as the MC, explaining how the race goes. Reynolds is JJ McClure, a former race car driver and mechanic who is the standing champ in the race. Eager to keep his title, he is desperate to win again. In this race though, that doesn't just mean going fast, anyone can go fast, but sooner or later, you will get stopped. JJ and his strange friend, Victor (Dom Delouse) adopt a personality of two paramedics driving a patient cross country. Apparently this worked in the actual race one year. The supporting cast of competition includes Jamie Farr as an overzealous Sheik in a hopped up Rolls Royce, Roger Moore playing a comic version of his James Bond character driving his popular silver Austin Martin, Mel Tillus and Terry Bradshaw playing a couple of southern boys cruising in a stolen race car and my personal favorite, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. playing womanizing, gambling hard drinking priests driving a red Ferrari (they aren't really priests). All this adds up to a movie where every scene you see a star. Dean and Sammy steal the show in almost every scene they're in, they are class acts adding something unattainable in most pictures of this caliber. The racing antics are not quite as funny as the beginning scenes where all the characters are introduced, but it is entertaining. The best part of the movie comes at the end though where the bloopers are shown during the closing credits. It's worth the price of the DVD alone. Don't expect a great movie out of Cannonball Run, all you can really expect is a good time, but isn't that what it's all about?

A zany cross country race based on an

actual event called "The Cannonball

Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash." The brainchild of writer Brock

Yates, who competed in the first Cannonball in 1971. The object is to

drive as fast and as safely as possible from Connecticut to Redondo Beach, California.

In every Cannonball, no driver or person has ever been injured.

The worst case, a team or two put behind

bars for no more than an hour.

"The Cannonball Run" is based on real

characters and adventures. It was penned

by Yates, who makes an appearance in the early stages of the movie as the "organizer."

Burt Reynolds headlines an all star lineup as "J.J. McClure" a wealthy

entrepreneur who, along with his

'executive assistant' Victor Prinze,

played with great verve by comedian

Dom DeLuise. Victor has some issues.

In times of 'mortal danger' his personality changes from mild mannered

mechanic, into an alter-ego called

"Captain Chaos" who wreaks havoc on

some less than respectable hombres we encounter along the way.

Farrah Fawcett is teamed with J.J. and Victor when she's kidnapped in their ambulance.

Jack Elam as "Doctor Nikolas Van Helsing" provides lots of laughs

and few chills when needed.

Veteran performers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. join the ensemble as

a pair of priests in a souped-up Ferrari.

Roger Moore makes a departure from his

'James Bond' character playing "Seymor Goldfarb." An individual who believes he's

Roger Moore. It's a great spoof and Moore plays it with perfection.

Mel Tillis and former quarterback

Terry Bradshaw show up as just a

couple of good ol' boys ala "Dukes

of Hazzard" style, toting cases of beer but sans the "General Lee."

Tara Buckman and Adrienne Barbeau are seen throughout the film in their

custom black Lamborghini Countach,

breaking speed limits and the hearts

of some unsuspecting law enforcement

officers along the route.

Jamie Farr from "MASH" is cast in the role of a Sheik obsessed with winning the Cannonball

in a hot-rod Rolls Royce.

The Cannonball Run was directed by

Hal Needham who brought us "Smokey and

the Bandit" and "Hooper." Hal and Brock

were partners in a Cannonball held in the late 70S. Needham sets a flat out,

pedal to the metal pace for "Cannonball" and it doesn't let

up till the finish line.

After twenty years, this film still makes you laugh. Rent it tonight :)

I watched this because I adore Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, but only after putting off watching it for so long--I was afraid it would be really stupid and not be worthy of being Dean's next to last movie. I had no reason to fear :) . It is absolutely hilarious! The second one is a million times better (more Dean & Sammy and a huge plus with Frank), but this one's great. It's just crazy and silly and a ton of fun.

Okay, so I first saw this film at the age of 10, and we all know that a 10 year old is easier to please than an adult. However, I still love this film now (15 years later!), and not just for the fast cars and all-star cast. Of course the plot is almost non-existent but who cares? It's refreshing to see a film which doesn't take itself too seriously (a point that Dr Popinofsky seems to have missed in his review). It's called fun, Doc. F-U-N. If we're not allowed a bit of pointless fun from time to time what's the point of even getting out of bed in the morning?

I accept it's probably not to everybody's taste but it still makes me giggle!

I must admit that my expectations were not too high on purchasing this Blu-ray, but I'm glad I was wrong. The movie itself needs no real explanation, tons of stars (a little too much Burt Reynolds for my taste, though), fighting (Jackie Chan's first Hollywood movie) and fast cars add up to some great entertainment. Picture quality is very good considering the price and the disc even manages to squeeze in a commentary. The highlight has to be the out-takes displayed during the credits, so funny!

If you want a movie that doesn't require too many brain cells, this is the one for you. Just plain fun

The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) (2010)

The Other GuysThis is one of the funniest movies to come out in a very long time. Here's why:

1. The movie was filled with belly laughing funny bits that were surprising and not the typical cliche kind of stuff. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.

2. There was also a lot of subtle humor, also making this movie very entertaining.

3. Will Ferrell was absolutely hilarious. That's to be expected. What was so surprising was Mark Wahlberg. He was different from his normal hard as nails tough guy roles, and he played off of Ferrell just perfectly. He was so hilarious.

4. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were perfect in their roles. They weren't on for long, but they were part of some very funny bits. Michael Keaton also contributed some fun to the movie. Eva Mendes was perfectly cast. All in all, a superb cast that made for an uproariously funny comedy.

While there were periods that moved a bit slowly, that shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this movie. The laughs more than made up for any slower times. Also, those slower periods set up some of the funniest bits later on, and they set up the story.

It was really relaxing to laugh so hard. I felt like I had a mini-vacation. I'd absolutely recommend this movie.

I have not laughed this hard since "The Hangover". This has to be the best comedy I have seen this summer, hands down. I only wish I could think of a TLC lyric to bring it all home. Does anyone remember "Waterfalls"? From the wooden gun to the non-stop one liners, I was rolling in the floor. Will Ferrell has not been this good since "Old School" and Mark Wahlberg was ever bit his comedic equal in this fantastic film. From Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson all the way to Michael Keaton, everyone was amazing. Whoever did the casting for this movie took a second seat to only one person, the writers. The script was drop dead hilarious.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg play two down and out cops? Mr. Ferrell seems to be stuck in his rut by his own choice and since I don't want to give anything away, let's just say that Mark Wahlberg made a colossal mistake to have found his way down to the lower levels of hell. Luckily the two of them are partners. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are the heroes of New York City but do to some unforeseen circumstances, they quickly relinquish their title. Wanting to seize the opportunity of the new opening for a hero, our two bumbling cops attempt to solve a very big case.

Apparently some guy has been constructing some buildings without getting a scaffolding permit. Are you kidding me? The two losers meander down to arrest him and fall into a very large case of fraud and an attempted robbery, of a very large nature. I am trying very hard not to give away any of the punch lines in this film but admittedly it is difficult to write this review without doing so, since I was laughing the entire movie. From driving the Prius into a bucket full of cocaine, all the way to being disgusted about the four homeless guys using it as a sex toy, I was laughing continually.

Have I said yet it was too damn funny, and this is coming from the guy who only a few months ago said Will Ferrell was washed up. Talk about eating your words. Even Eva Mendes was fabulous as the homely housewife of Will Ferrell that Mark Wahlberg couldn't seem to stop ogling.

With some movies you see all the laughs crammed into the two minute commercial and when you see the full length feature there is nothing left. With this movie the commercial is only the tip of the iceberg. The explosion scene was funny but trust me, if you liked the commercials, you will flat out love the movie. Everyone in the theater was holding their stomachs from beginning to end.

This is a must see movie. It was absolutely incredible.

Watched this recently and now looking to buy it. I read the reviews that gave this movie negative feedback but honestly, I couldn't read them as most of them had incoherent, unfinished sentences. Some apparently don't believe in using proper spelling, grammar or logic. I then came to the conclusion that they all had something in common: They fall into the "I'm easily amused and require dumbed down fast pace comedy to make me happy...ooh a squirrel...is that Miley Cyrus doing a duet with Justin Bieber on the radio?" category. I know, I know I guess maybe using an acronym would be better but then who would get it?

Anyways, it's at least a rental for those curious and sorry for my rant. I just thought the movie was funny. C'mon guys! "I'm a peacock, ya' gotta let me fly!!!"

"The Other Guys" is the latest collaboration of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who created other recent comedy classics such as Talledega Nights and Anchorman. This movie has a great combination of insider police humor and current hot button issues in New York City, namely white collar crime. It crosses a few genres, equal parts buddy cop movie, with a comedic take on action flicks, as well as investigations of corporate corruption. It is in the same vein as Kevin Smith's "Copout" which was also released in 2010 and follows the exploits of eccentric cops battling crime in New York.

McKay directed and cowrote this movie, which really has some solid and intricate writing, which is counterbalanced by the antics of Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's characters, Terry Hoight and Allan Gamble. The opening scene is an obvious ribbing of cliche driven cop action flicks, played to perfection by the team of Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock, whose fate shows a touch of reality and provides a counterpoint to the duo of Ferrell and Wahlberg, whose identity is created as being known only for their mediocrity and incompetence, hence they are "the other guys." Ferrell is an accountant desk cop, who is goaded into discharging his weapon in a "desk pop" in order to fit in with his coworkers. Even though he seems like the "office geek," his development throughout the movie shows a hilariously dark past and an instant magnestism with women, which baffles Wahlberg's character, dubbed the "Yankee Clipper," an action hungry self proclaimed "peacock", who is in the doghouse for accidentaly shooting a baseball player while on a ballpark security detail. They are relagated to being the butt of every joke from their fellow officers, yet when they stumble upon the malfeasance of a multi national coroporation, the odd couple take on the treachery of Wall Street's dark side. Given that this movie was filmed in 2009, just a year after the stock market crash and during the bailout controversy, McKay proves to be as socially conscious as he is hilarious.

There is quite a cast in this movie, aside from the great preformance of Ferrell and Wahlberg. Eva Mendes plays Ferrell's wife, who dumbfounds Wahlberg as to how Ferrell could marry a woman of her stature. Michael Keaton is the duo's captain, who trys to be lenient despite their bumbling, as he works a demeaning side job at Bed, Bath and Beyond to finance his son's NYU education, where he allegedly "explores his bi-sexuality and DJing skills." Rob Riggle, of Daily show fame (as well as the tazer cop in "The Hangover") teams up with Daymon Wayans to replace the recently fallen Jackson and Rock as the top dogs, who become the new self promoting glory hounds of the NYC media. Steve Coogan plays Ershon, the bunko businessman who's scams range from Nigeria to Chechnya, with a penchant for bribing with pairs of tickets to the Jersey Boys and Mama Mia and Ray Stevenson rounds out the cast as the neo-conservative security expert who plays the foil to the heroic other guys. The undercover informant at the end also hints at a new case "the other guys" have a lead on; a sequel is likely in the offing.

I saw this on a plane this week and practically splurted out coffee on the woman next to me when Samuel L. delivered the line: "If I wanna hear you talk, I'll shove my arm up your a** and work your mouth like a puppet!" Pure poetry. Here are some more gems: "We found your stolen Prius, it was voting for Ralph Nader." / "Your farts aren't manly. They sound like a baby blowing out birthday candles."

The Other Guys is a no-holds-barred send up of the 1980 buddy cop action flick. The over-the-top car chases with Samuel L and The Rock pull together many of the the truly ludicrous stunts that seemed to pass as reasonable in those movies. It's all topped with delicious one-liners ("You have the right to remain silent... but I want to hear you scream!") that would make Shane Black proud.

The writer/director also has an axe to grind on the whole financial industry bailout and there's an excellent Powerpoint-style series of stats that accompany the credits. The bad guys here aren't regular thieves but C-level white-collar types committing financial fraud. It shows how far we've come since the days of Lethal Weapon and 24 Hours.

Will Ferrell is Will Ferrell but the comedic star here is Mark Wahlberg. After being mercilessly ripped by Adam Samberg on SNL, his line delivery actually suits comedy perfectly. The whole thing is like a 90-minute comedy sketch more than a movie and there are enough funny lines and visual gigs to hide the plot. It's been a pretty thin year for comedy, so this is definitely one not to miss.

Employee of the Month (2006)

Employee of the MonthThis was an enjoyable film. My big problem is that it is a standard formula film that I have seen a dozen times over. They really added nothing new to the equation. You have a likeable slacker who lives with his grandmother and works a nowhere job for a Sam's Club type company. You have a mean nemisis who is the head cashier. Enter a new employee, a drop dead gorgeous girl and the slacker takes it on himself to win her over by being a good employee and become employee of the month. He then has to battle the mean nemisis with a bunch of gags with his group of strange friends. Then at the end, he has a misunderstanding with the girl when some of his lies and deeds come out. But in the end he redeems himself and all is good. Cook is good in the role. I would have like to see him ad lib some more and make the movie more his own. Simpson is okay, her big contribution to the movie is various low cut tops. Dax I thought was great with his Pedro like boxer. A fair budget and decent acting save this one. I would rent it first rather than making a blind buy.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I must. I enjoyed watching `Employee of the Month' starring Dane Cook and the infamous Jessica Simpson in this light-hearted comedy/romance about finding love and selling in bulk. I didn't intend to watch this film because I thought it was going to be yet another vehicle for Miss Simpson to giggle and jiggle her way to the top of the Hollywood food chain. However I was eventually swayed at my daughters insistance and agreed to a viewing.

It definitely was not what I expected. Dane Cook was quite enjoyable in the part of Zack, box boy at the local Super-Club mega store and Jessica Simpson played it straight and somewhat subdued in her role as Amy, the stores new cashier.

Obviously there's nothing deep or profound here, just good, clean fun that the whole family can enjoy. Watch and see who's the greatest cashier of them all!

Buy Employee of the Month (2006) Now

So now add EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH to the ongoing list of slacker movies. No, it's no CLERKS or OFFICE SPACE, but, nevertheless, I found it quite charming and certainly convivial enough to give it three stars. The acting efforts of stand-up comic Dane Cook and Groundlings alum and Cook's movie nemesis Dax Shepard propel the movie and give it its comedic gusto. The rest of the cast, including some so-called professional funnymen, vary from congenially effective to tepid.

Most of us can relate, at some point or another, to people suffering the woes and aggravations of wasting away in a dead end job. We've all felt that overriding sense of boredom and career unfulfillment. Imagine toiling away at a Costco-like superstore as the lowest of the low, the much lamented position of Box Boy. Dane Cook plays Zack Bradley, a likable, laid back box boy at the Super Club ("where buying in bulk is our God-given right") who was quite content to let the glory go to cocky, super go-getter Vince Downey (Dax Shepard), the "fastest cashier in the Southwest Region." That is, until he falls for new cashier girl Amy Renfrew (Jessica Simpson). Her personal file indicates Amy will only date employees of the month. So Zack decides to be that employee of the month but then has to contend with chief rival Vince, who has held that position for 17 months running. And if Vince gets it for the 18th time, he'll break the Super Club record and will win the grand prize of a brand newish 2005 Chevy Malibu. Will Zack be able to summon some reserve of ambition and achieve this oh-so-lofty goal? Will Dax Shepard steal the movie away from Dane Cook? Will Jessica Simpson ever get past acting on a vapid level?

Every now and then, I feel like veering away from Oscar caliber type movies and getting down and dirty, cinema-wise (and, no, I don't mean those kinds of movies). I'm probably gonna go check out THE DEPARTED in the following weeks, but, tonight, I was in the mood for some crude, unPC shtick. I mean, what do you expect from this B-level cast and from Dane Cook? Rated PG Bill Cosby stylings? C'mon, now. This is pretty much the low-brow stuff that I thought the movie was gonna have, and I'm pretty content after having seen it. It contained enough chuckle-and-laugh-out-loud-worthy moments and enough shots of the nicely-endowed, scantily-clad Jessica Simpson that I didn't feel I wasted my money. Folks wandering into the theatre in search of Shakespearean styles of thespianism are in the wrong freakin' place. EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH is fully a frat movie, its core audience predominantly composed of juveniles and juveniles-at-heart. It does strive to be sweet at times and even attempts to drive home a message late in the flick (which I actually think proved to be more of a detriment to the film).

There are some things that the movie missed out on. Casting, for example. Amy Smart would've been perfect for this role (although, she's perfect in any role) and would've done so much more with Amy Renfrew than Jessica Simpson did here. The word is still out on whether Simpson can act, but there's no doubting that she looks fine. Come to think of it, Ryan Reynolds probably would've also improved on the Zach Bradley role. And I've never been an Andy Dick fan. Guy is too out there and, worst of all, is NOT funny. The film also suffers from not taking enough chances (you could sense Dane Cook biting his tongue in many of the scenes), and the ending was definitely too smaltzy. The humor is also not mined enough in Andy Dick's blind-as-a-bat character, who toils away in the eye-care department. Same goes for the character of Gary Ross, the domineering dwarf.

But, fear not, this comedy flick does offer some nice touches. I liked the idea of a secret hangout located on top of one of the towering, warehouse-like piles of store stock supplies, the concept of the store manager (named Glen Gary) being afraid of his big brother (named, Glen Ross, who turns out to be an imperious dwarf), and Efren Ramirez as Vince's sycophant lackey. Dane Cook, while not Ryan Reynolds, still is very serviceable in the lead role and you almost buy into his 180 degree redemption from a deadbeat to a responsible citizen. And Jessica Simpson does look VERY hot. And, with respect to the other actors, Dax Shepard is truly the one to watch in this film. The combination of arrogance and insecurity he instills within his role makes Vince Downey the most well-rounded character in the movie.

So, kudos to Dax Shepard, Dane Cook, Harland Williams, Efren Ramirez, and fine! kudos also to Jessica Simpson. Slackers of the World, unite. Go down some suds, scarf a steak sandwich, and get yourself to the nearest cinema and revel in the low-rent but funny experience that is EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH.

I don't know if you'd want to add this to your permanent comedy shelf, but it is a fairly funny movie. I found some memorable characters and could certainly laugh at the way a few of the employees took their 'low level' jobs so seriously, as if training for the Olympics. There were also some very revealing truths to the working class that helped raise the amusement level. Worth watching at least once.

Adventures in Babysitting (25th Anniversary Edition) (1987)

Adventures in BabysittingBeginning your movie with the right song can get you off to a good start and "Adventures in Babysitting" gives us that golden oldie "And Then He Kissed Me" as Chris Parker prepares for her big date with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, this clown promptly proceeds to dump our heroine, which only proves he is a fool because Chris is played by Elisabeth Shue. Those of us who remember "Call to Glory" already knew that Shue was a babe and so does Brad Anderson (Keith Coogan), the kid who is too old for the babysitter on whom he has a mondo crush. Into the mix we add Sara Anderson (Maia Brewton), the adorable kid sister who has a thing for the Mighty Thor from Marvel Comics (she must have got the cool Thor helmet from Stan Lee, Jack Kirby or somebody in the ol' Bullpen), Daryl Coopersmith (Anthony Rapp), Brad's best friend who has yet to learn when to shut up, and Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller), Chris' best friend who is stuck in downtown Chicago at a bus depot without her glasses, having decided that running away from home was a bad idea. Unfortunately for our heroine, deciding to simply go down and pick up Brenda proves to be a bad idea. With the three kids in tow, Chris takes off for the big city. When the station wagon gets a flat tire that is only the first in a massive chain of misfortunes that befall our plucky lass. There will be a tow truck man with a claw, street thugs with knives on the El, gangster in a chop shop, a college frat party, a close encounter with the parental units at a party high at top a skyscraper, and a delightful session of singing "The Babysitter Blues."

In its own way, "Adventures in Baby Sitting is in the mold of the Indiana Jones films, where the cast of characters are stuck on a roller coaster of exciting encounters. Our harried heroine puts up with all of this in order to save her friend and get the kids home before their parents find out they have spent the night narrowly escaping death instead of being safe at home watching the tube. Even though there is a running gag that Chris looks exactly like the Playmate of the Month, this is a movie aimed for kids in the age range of her charges. There is enough of a cartoonish element to the bad guys to take the edge off of the dangers involved and of course we know from the first note of the movie that everything will turn out okay in the end and Chris is going to top off the evening by getting kissed by someone who might actually deserve her. Shue's natural performance holds the film together and although she has gone on to decidedly more dramatic roles in her more recent films, she evinces a natural flair for comedy in this one. However, be warned: once your kidlets have seen this 1987 Disney film they are going to be grossly disappointed in whoever you pay to watch them the next time you go out for a night of fun. Final note: Be sure to watch the entire credits at the end.

Another classic 80's comedy, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (aka "A Night on the Town") comes to DVD to delight old fans and new.

When highschool senior Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) decides to spend Saturday night babysitting the Anderson kids Sara (Maia Brewton) and Brad (Keith Coogan) as well as Brad's best friend Daryl (Anthony Rapp), no one, not least Chris, will be prepared for the wild ride ahead, when Chris' best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) phones and begs to be rescued from the Chicago bus depot after an aborted attempt to run away. Chris bundles the kids in the car and heads for downtown Chicago, but after getting stranded thanks to a flat tyre, the gang end up in a mess of trouble!

This is such a fun film. Elisabeth Shue glows as Chris and offers one of her funniest comedy performances. Whilst she is best-remembered by most film critics for her role in "Leaving Las Vegas", to 80's kids like me, she'll forever be fondly regarded as Chris in AIB.

Anthony Rapp, Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton are hilarious in their roles, and Penelope Ann Miller is a scream in the film's clever subplot of Brenda's adventures in the bus depot. The film also features early turns from Vincent d'Onofrio, Bradley Whitford and George Newbern.

The DVD is presented in non-anamorphic widescreen, with no extras whatsoever, but fans will just be happy to finally have this 80's gem on DVD. A bargain price too.

This is one of those rare gems!

Everyone, I believe, can relate to the craziness that goes on here.... it is just taken to the extreme in this movie.

Elizabeth Shue is fantastic as the babysitter. One of the most memorable lines is when she proclaims... "I'm the babysitter!".

Not to be missed. Enjoyable for everyone. Must see classic and timeless comedy.

It's hard to understand, but this Blu-ray disk is worse than the DVD. The video is extremely grainy. I compared it to the DVD, which I own, and the DVD is better. I'm sending it back, hoping that I received a bad copy. If not, I'm surprised that Disney (Touchstone) would release such a inferior product. Even the audio was not up to Blu-ray quality. On my surround sound 5.1 system, the video only played in stereo. In addition, there are no "extras" at all. I was hoping for some comments by the excellent actors, or Chris Columbus, the director of the first Harry Potter films. Nothing.

This movie is so entertaining, it should be in every video/DVD collection. It's a simple story about a babysitter forced to take her charges with her into the city as she hurries to help out a friend. This plausible premise quickly escalates until the babysitter and kids find themselves in situations that James Bond might find daunting. The acting, the music and the appealing plot make the story enjoyable for everybody from kids to parents. I popped the disk into the machine with no great expectations, and could not stop watching until it finished. Other films may use crotch-biting dogs and semen in the hair to substitute shock for hilarity. But Adventures in Babysitting delivers real laughs while taking you on a wild ride through the wicked bowels of the city.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (+ BD Live) (2008)

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)I was all prepared to trivialize this movie for what I expected to be another hipster teen comedy taking advantage of the success of Juno and Superbad, especially given that Michael Cera is the co-star of all three films. However, this 2008 movie is really a quirky, sharply played variation on Martin Scorsese's 1985 After Hours, this time focusing on two misfit teens, kindred spirits when it comes to their taste in music, who find themselves traipsing through New York's indie rock scene for one hilariously sleepless night. Their chemistry is predestined by their names, a tribute to the scintillating married couple played by William Powell and Myrna Loy in The Thin Man series of golden-era Hollywood classics. Their nocturnal misadventures are driven by Nora's search for her hard-partying best friend Caroline, who escaped in a fit of paranoia out of a van, while gay-band bassist Nick is nursing a broken heart over Tris, the shallow, man-baiting ex-girlfriend who continues to play him.

If the movie simply limited itself to the odyssey, it would have been satisfying enough for its intended audience, but what director Peter Sollett and screenwriter Lorene Scarfaria have done to transcend the genre is make the lead characters' mutual passion for music the focal emotional point of their growing attraction for one another. Nick keeps sending Tris idiosyncratic mix CDs (like "Road to Closure, Vol. 12"), which she tosses into the trash only to provide Nora an opportunity to retrieve them and listen to reflections of his broken heart. Neither is able to articulate their feelings otherwise, as shown by their comically bumbling conversations, so the music plays a vital part of their burgeoning relationship. I still don't find Cera terribly versatile, but he has been resourceful in using his now-familiar screen persona of a dweebish sad-sack in suitably well-turned material.

Familiar as Catherine Keener's edgy but ultimately caring daughter in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Kat Dennings comes into her own as Norah, capturing the insecurity of a character who leaves herself wide open to the pain inflicted by those around her. There are scene-stealing turns by Ari Graynor as the constantly drunken Caroline, Alexis Dziena as self-appointed goddess Tris, and Rafi Gavron and Aaron Yoo as Nick's club-friendly gay bandmates. There are a couple of Saturday Night Live cast cameos thrown in "newscaster" Seth Meyers as the horned-up passenger mistaking Nick's yellow Yugo as a cab (with Scarfaria as his girlfriend) and Andy Samberg as a bum lurking on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral. The alt-rock music is appropriately underground to fit the story. There really isn't that much more to the movie since the fate of these characters is clear from the outset.

It's simply that the film has good energy fueled by the constant barrage of music and smart dialogue to fill the love story that emerges from their long night's journey into morning. There are a surprising number of extras with the 2009 DVD starting with two separate commentaries, the first with Sollett, Cera, Dennings and Graynor discussing the production details, and the second with Sollett and the source novel's writers, Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, in which they discuss more of the story and screen adaptation. There are deleted scenes and outtakes, some quite funny but understandably excised, and an amusingly off-kilter Nick & Norah puppet show by Dennings. Rounding out the extras are storyboards, photo galleries, Graynor's video diary, a music video, and a funny faux-interview with Cera and Dennings.

I am over 50 and even though this movie is probably aimed at teenagers

i found it really enjoyable, this was due to really clever writing and

a excellent cast that seemed to work well together.

I had allready borrowed this movie from my brother and decided after

watching it to buy a copy for myself from the U.S. (i`m in australia)

that`s how much i enjoyed this movie.

The picture and audio is very good as you would expect with blu-ray

and this movie had some fantastic music.

When you think about it, nothing much really happens in this movie. NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST takes place in the course of one day and night, with the crux of the story occuring in the wee hours of the morning. So there's a bit of an energetic After Hours vibe in this movie, but catered towards the sensibilities of hip teenagers who prowl the New York streets way past their bedtime. But then it also has echoes of Adventures in Babysitting, with Ari Graynor's awfully wasted Caroline subbing in for Penelope Ann Miller's nervous Brenda. Going into this one, and me being a huge fan of one of the most fabulous romantic couples in cinema, Nick and Nora Charles (of the Thin Man series), I was already favorably predisposed towards this quirky teenage romantic comedy.

Norah has never met Nick. But she knows about this guy who makes the best break-up mix CDs, most of which were pieced together for his ex-girlfriend Tris (his latest opus being titled "Road to Closure Vol. 12"). But Tris just pokes fun at the poor sap and then promptly discards these mixes, with Norah then un-discarding them and putting them in her I-pod. Because Norah absolutely digs these mixes. So, no, Norah has never met Nick, but she's probably halfway in love with the guy anyway.

Now Nick may not look like he's all that (in fact, he looks kinda dorky), yet he plays in a rock band, plays the guitar although he doesn't quite know how to work the drum machine. And dude drives a broken-down yellow Yugo which people often mistake for a taxi. But being in a band has to count for a couple of cool points, right? The plot MacGuffin is that the legendary rock band Fluffy is scheduled to put on a secret show somewhere in NYC, the rub being, of course, that the time and location are kept a mystery, leaving Fluffy's fans scouring the city for clues in the form of little white rabbits. Nick and Norah happen to be such fans, and, during this evening, they meet by chance and then are thrown together by circumstances (circumstances being the misplacing of Norah's unholily inebriated BFF and a half-hearted quest to find Fluffy). And, somehow, someway, it turns out that Nick and Norah just may be perfect for each other.

Segue alert. The special features in this dvd are pretty righteous: two cool audio commentaries one with Director Peter Sollett, Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, and Ari Graynor (fun!); the other with Peter Sollett, authors Rachel Cohn & David Levithan, and screenwriter Lorene Scafaria; 4 minutes of outtakes; 9 deleted/alternate scenes; an awesome "Nick & Norah Puppet Show" by Kat Dennings (she pretty much recaps the film but also throws in a savage bear); Ari Graynor's excellent video diary; storyboard animations; a fake interview with Michael Cera & Kat Dennings; Peter Sollett's photo album; and Bishop Allen's music video "Middle Management." All worth checking out.

I really like this movie. See this one especially if you like movies in which two people just mostly hang out and come to find that they're awesomely sympatico. Michael Cera (Juno (Single-Disc Edition)) and Kat Dennings are terrific together, showing off an easy, natural chemistry. The low-key Michael Cera, with his not-quite-male-model looks, is likeable because he's so relatable to nerds like me, but he's also got his act together, not to mention that Cera has that wonderfully dry delivery. Kat Dennings is amazing in this film, with her vibrancy and spunk and wistful vulnerability and just her girl-next-door realness. How can you not pull for her, especially when you find out that her ex-boyfriend was mostly using her to get in good with her influential music producer dad? And don't discount the supporting actors. It's cool that Nick's gay homies aren't portrayed stereotypically, but more as regular dudes and who really are looking out for Nick. And credit to Ari Graynor for being a good sport in some pretty humiliating haplessly drunk scenes (that scene of Caroline sifting thru a soiled toilet for her bubble gum is funny, but in a really gross kinda way).

Do they ever find the legendary rock band Fluffy? It doesn't really matter, because this movie isn't really about Fluffy. There's no dumbing down here, and there are many moments of great appeal, mostly generated by the two leads. Set in the gritty neon backdrop of the Big Apple at night and with a playlist of cool indie-rock tunes to serenade things along, NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST, funny and romantic, wistful and unconventional, should please both teens and adults, the night owls and even those who like to turn in early and thus will never know the delights of experiencing a live Fluffy concert. Although, again, it's not about Fluffy.

I was expecting a typical teenage/high school rom com and what I got was something far better. This movie comes as close to capturing EXACTLY what it was like to be young, into alternative music and how many nights ended up like this.

Without giving to much away, the casting was perfect bar maybe the ex-girlfriend of Michael Cera who comes across as way too vacuous and not remotely the alt girl type. Anyway, the chemistry between Nick and Norah seems pretty spot on as does the chemistry between the guys in the band and how they interact with each other. The ability to cast gay characters without making them flaming stereotypes was a good move.

There are other nice touches--the Yugo Nick drives, the clubs they hit in NYC, the goofy late night corner store owner and the empty Port Authority bus terminal all just work to create the feeling of "oh, yeah, I remember being 20 and doing that and being there at 4 a.m." without all this urban angst and fear that movies seem to want to portray New York as having.

On the extras I enjoyed Norah's puppet show version of the movie. Other than that the outtakes, video diary, etc., are just filler.

In the end, Kat Dennings is a star period who knows how not to overact and Michael Cera finally plays a role more suited to his emo-ness.

A pleasant gem.

Just as Nick's yellow Yugo must roll backwards before it can move forwards, so to must our hero make a few mistakes before he gets himself going the right direction. Although it's not the most original concept for a film (night on the town), this movie's strength rests in the realistic relationships between its teenaged characters (who love, manipulate, and take advantage of one another) and the ambiance of a night in NYC. There are enough summaries here to rely on, I will simply recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a good flick about teenaged antics, young love, or indie music.

This movie is like a culmination of all of the best of Adam Sandler's movies!! I laughed so hard tears ran down my face and I ran out of breath! Funny from start to finish, great characters and just a blast from the minute it began! Love, Love, Love it!!!!!

So, Adam Sandler has never made a sequel? How is that possible? If you really think about it, that interesting tidbit makes perfect sense. What would be the point of making 50 First Dates 2, The Wedding Singer 2, Just Go with It 2, or Happy Gilmore 2 (even though that would have been a massively successful sequel)? It doesn't appear that Sandler has purposely avoided making a sequel, he's just one of those "one and done" actors that never reprises his previous roles, despite heavily criticism for many of them (although, it's hard to imagine criticism keeps him up at night). It's no secret critics have been pretty harsh on the "King of the Razzie." The response to the majority of his films has been pretty sub-par over recent years (okay, that was being nice it has really been downright terrible). Regardless, Sandler has very few box office bombs under his belt over the course of his lengthy career, and those that did end up in the red were easily replenished by his successful flicks, including Grown Ups, which raked in an impressive $271 million in 2010. And, with that being said it's no surprise the stars of Grown Ups are back for a sequel, cleverly titled, Grown Ups 2.

Directed by Dennis Dugan (Grown Ups, Happy Gilmore, Just Go with It), Grown Ups 2 stars Adam Sandler who reprises his role as Lenny Feder, a Hollywood talent agent. After living the Hollywood lifestyle, Lenny moved his family back to his suburban roots, once again living near his best friends Eric (Kevin James), Kurt (Chris Rock), and Marcus (David Spade). For their kids, it's the last day of school before summer is out, and for the adults, it's just another day in the neighborhood. But, why not start the summer off right with a party? However, before the party can begin, Lenny, along with his friends and family, have plenty to do like attend a dance recital, reminisce about some childhood memories, and face-off against a bunch of chest-bumping frat guys. Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Taylor Lauter, and Shaquille O'Neal also star in supporting roles.

There's no need to dance around the major issue of this film: there's absolutely no point to it whatsoever. From beginning to end, this film is quite simply a reason for Adam Sandler to get all of his friends together to make a cheesy movie and get paid to do it. Sure, some people will criticize the fact that this film is lazy and lacks ambition, but at the same time, most Adam Sandler flicks are full of pointless nonsense. It would be too easy to tear this film apart, pointing out its endless amount of flaws, but so many comedies out there these days lack purpose, often sacrificing plot for cheap laughs and that's exactly the point. Even though this film, much like its predecessor, leaves a great deal to be desired in the plot department (not to mention character development), the film still features a great deal of entertainment value. If you don't' believe me, just ask yourself the simple question: If Adam Sandler movies are so bad, why do so many moviegoers continue to pay to see them? The simple answer is they're funny...and Grown Ups 2 is no exception.

Once again, the main cast is back including Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade. Their shenanigans are endless and the childish pranks continue on from the first film, spending plenty of time passing gas, wiping off deer pee (yeah, you read that right), and ribbing each other's shortcomings. Some scenes are funnier than others, with one of the best being an uninflated river raft incident, and the stalest being the opening scene where a deer invades the Feder household. Still, the laughs will be pretty consistent throughout. Oddly enough, the majority of the "funniest" moments involve Shaquille O'Neal, who portrays a laid-back police officer. And, if you're a fan of previous Adam Sandler flicks, then you'll recognize the majority of the supporting cast/cameos, which includes Allen Covert, Steve Buscemi, Jon Vovitz, Peter Dante, Dan Patrick, and Nick Sardson. Missing from the film, however, is Rob Schneider one of the main cast members from the first film. Citing another filming obligation as the reason for his absence, Nick Sardson fills in as a new character, even though his character clearly was written for Schneider, which often resembles Schneider's characteristics from Grown Ups.

In the event that you're on the fence about seeing Grown Ups 2, there's a simple rule of thumb: if you enjoyed Grown Ups, there's no reason to assume you won't enjoy this sequel. The film features a quality cast, a ton of laughs, and the content is kept relatively clean (despite the constant abuse of female cleavage) with a PG-13 rating. At the same time, if you watched Grown Ups and found it to be tedious to sit through, there's really no need to give this film a shot since very little has changed from the first film. Grown Ups 2 is targeted towards a younger crowd and movie lovers that have followed Sandler or any one of his cast mates throughout their careers. By now you should already know how you feel about the majority of the cast featured in this film. Their brand of comedy can be a bit crude at times, but for the most part, it's innocent, wholesome fun for the entire family. In any event, the diehard Adam Sandler fans out there probably already have their plans to see the film and they won't be disappointed with the outcome of this film. As far as everyone else goes, determining whether or not to see this sequel is a coin-flip and should depend on your "kind" of humor.

Grade: C+

The sequel comes with very little plot. Our foursome all have their child issues. David Spade suddenly has a long lost son so he doesn't miss out on the fun. There is an 80's theme party with a ridiculous townies vs. college boys fight.

The humor is still crude, but perhaps a bit less than before as I found it tolerable. The film mostly relies on one liners and insults as is typical in a Sandler production. This film also highlights the talents or lack thereof of many Hollywood larvae including the Sandler clan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Paulina Gretzky. Team Jacob fans can watch Taylor Lautner in an uncredited role as Fratboy Andy. My how they have fallen.

Will work as a rental. No hurry to rush out and see it.

Parental Guide: Brief male rear nudity. 1 f-bomb. No sex. Sex talk and general crudeness including urination, feces, and fart humor.

If you like watching family movies and like seeing/hearing family jokes, then this is for you! Otherwise, you hate this movie and should stay far, far, away!

Yes, I found myself laughing for most of the movie. Since, I'm watching a comedy, I'm expecting to laugh, so it did deliver. I found the story wasn't really there and nothing too special. Just Adam Sandler and friends moving back to their old town and living their lives there. They get into funny situations and do funny things. The acting was fairly well done, and the directing was good for the most part.

So, I thought Grown Ups 1 was very average movies, and I gave it 3 stars. Grown Ups 2 was better than 1, so I will give it 4 stars for that reason. Again, I recommend this movie if you like family jokes.

Beaches (1988)

BeachesThis may very well be the saddest movie I have ever seen in my life, but it is also one of the best. If you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend that you do. It tells the story of two young women who meet when they are 11 years old. At a glance, they seem like two completely different people, but in the end, it's their strong devotion to their friendship that make them so close. Bette Midler does an excellent job in her portrayal as CC Bloom, a feisty redhead who is determined to succeed in music and will do almost anything to do so. Hilary Whitney, played by the talented Barbara Hershey, is a quiet, reserved woman who often finds herself jealous of CC's rising success. CC and Hilary may be very different, but they grow even closer when Hilary gives birth to a child--a beautiful little girl named Victoria. When Hilary becomes diagnosed with a fatal disease, she is forced to search her soul and strengthen her relationships with CC and Victoria. Throughout the movie, CC and Hilary go through many difficult times, but in the end, their friendship prevails. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone, but don't expect to have dry eyes at the end! It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will touch every piece of your heart. It really does show that even though two friends may be very different from one another, and even though they may go through a lot of rough times, it is the strength of their friendship that will be the decisive element. Go see this movie--you won't be sorry!

BEACHES, based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart, is a fantastic and emotion-driven drama/comedy. Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey turn in fabulous fully-realised performances as two best friends who share an amazing relationship.

On the beach in Atlantic City, 11-year-olds CC Bloom and Hillary Whitney strike up a friendship that will endure beyond all obstacles. Through letters spanning the years, the two women vent their frustrations, hopes and dreams.

Bette Midler is mesmerising as the brash CC Bloom (the 'Otto Titsling' number is alone worth the price of admission). Barbara Hershey wisely downplays the role of Hillary though she never is upstaged by Midler.

Supporting roles from John Heard, Spalding Gray and Lainie Kazan (as CC's mother Leona) are right on target. Mayim Bialik (TV's "Blossom") plays the younger CC.

This film could have easily fallen into soapy melodrama thanks to it's plot, but the direction of Garry Marshall saves it from becoming too maudlin.

Still one fantastic movie!

The movie remind me so much of friendship with my best friend, that I love so dearly. I don't know how I would go on if I lost my friend to a terminal illness, cause we're so much like sisters. The movie just so heartfelt and tender hopefully every friend of a friend will get this movie.

I would actually give this film 3 1/2 stars. Bette Middler is just incredible. Bette's timing is perfect. Watch Bette as someone is talking to her in a scene, her facial reactions alone are just hilarious. She is a comedic genius. There are few movies that actually make me LOL, Bette's performance makes me laugh everytime in this film. The child who played Bette was also wonderful...

Barbra Hershey pulls off the other half of the film OK, but it is Bette that makes this movie. Great soundtrack too! I always get teary eyed when Bette is singing "The Glory of Love" at the end of the movie, and waves up in the air to heaven at Hillary.

But why is this a barebones DVD release? This was a huge movie. there are no extras? WHY? Not even a trailer? The DVD gets only 1 star. The movie gets ***1/2. Boo to Touchstone for putting this classic film on such a cheap DVD.

Mr. Popper's Penguins (Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (2011)

Mr. Popper's PenguinsYou live in an apartment in New York City and work within sight of the Empire State building. Your life is hectic but predictable.

Imagine getting a very unusual gift (turns out, later, to be from your father). It is a live gentoo penguin. Wanting to send it back, you ask for a return crate. You get a new crate all right--filled with five new penguins.

What a mess your apartment soon becomes! You get snipped at and dumped on by the penguins. You give them names, such as Nimrod, Stinky, Captain, etc. They are perpetually playful! The penguins swim in the bathtub and spill water all over. Your children from a terminated marriage come to visit, and, having long been alienated from you, absolutely fall in love with the penguins.

A nosy neighbor wonders what the noises are from your apartment and, suspecting that he is on to something, wants to tell the board about it. Worse yet, your new nemesis, a penguin specialist who works in the zoo, keeps spying on you. He has a behaviorist view of animals (making animals little more than machines made of flesh), and is determined to take your penguins from you. To him, penguins are simply fish-eating machines. He doubts if a non-specialist can properly care for penguins, and especially ridicules the notion that a loving bond has developed between the penguins and you.

In time, you turn your apartment into a winter wonderland, complete with snow, ice skating, etc. Some of the penguins lay eggs, and you are determined that they hatch. Your colleagues from work stumble upon your transformed apartment, and think that you have totally lost your mind. Your penguins follow you around wherever you go, and this produces its own share of comic events.

Everything comes to a head from the nosy neighbor, the penguin specialist, the kids, Popper's ex-wife, and his work colleagues. Popper is accused of breaking the law by housing penguins. He is fired from his job. He tries to win his ex-wife back. The penguin specialist has all of Popper's penguins. The apartment is normal once again, and the visiting children are heartbroken. And then... I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

This is a very entertaining and heartwarming movie for the whole family. If you are an animal lover, this little tale is definitely for you.

Took my 7 year old daughter to see this movie today & Im really glad we went!

From the previews I thought the movie was going to be boring & lame, but I was pleasantly surprised with the movie!

The movie ran at a fast & very entertaining pace...

The theater audience laughed, laughed & then laughed some more...

The movie has comedy for sure, but also tells a great story & has a few very good life lessons in it...

The lengths Carrey takes to take care of these Penguins is just AWESOME!!!

Jim Carrey did a fantastic job as the lead actor...

He shows signs of his old hillarious humor from his early films, but is not sooooo over the top in this film as he was in past films...

He showed true heart & was very believable in his role!!!

The Penguins were unbelievably funny & simply amazing! They must have had some serious training!

The supporting acting was pefectly done by Mr. Poppers kids & ex wife...

Overall I give this movie an A...

I would recommend going to see this movie while its in the theaters...

I would also recommend it for adults & children...

Thanks for reading my review!

I'm sorry. I forfeited all objectivity once the first penguin waddled on camera. Jim Carrey's past few flicks have been hit or miss with me, and maybe a part of it is that I've gotten accustomed to his schtick, despite the impressive rubber face and manic body contortions that would make a yogi master weep. And maybe I'm still holding NUMBER 23 against him. But what's cuter than an infestation of penguins? My niece and nephews adored this film. MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS, with its predictability and obvious gags, rises above the dreck by dint of penguins. Plus, it's got Carla Gugino, hotness personified.

Jim Carrey plays Tommy Popper, a businessman severely focused on his career. But, first, we see Tommy as a child who spends a span of years communicating with his father via ham radio. His dad is an explorer who is always away on exotic expeditions, and, over time, we witness young Tommy grow disillusioned with his absentee father. Thirty years later, Tommy Popper is divorced with custody of his two kids on alternate weekends. Tommy himself has become a neglectful parent. All he's focused on is securing a partnership in his firm, a position guaranteed him once he bags a primo piece of real estate called the Tavern on the Green.

The status quo gets topsy-turvied when Tommy receives a shipment of penguin to his upscale New York apartment. And then another crate of five more penguins. When his kids come over for a visit, they fall in love with them. From there the plot unfolds in by-the-numbers fashion. You may guess that Tommy Popper turns over a new leaf and becomes a better father, to the detriment of his career. You may conjecture that he becomes smitten with his ex-wife all over again, although how in heck do you fall out of love with Carla Gugino in the first place? There's fun in watching Popper gradually convert his swank Manhattan duplex into a sub-arctic region, just to accomodate the birds and to connect with his kids. Other than the usual thorny family dilemmas that inevitably crop up, the narrative conflict hinges on Clark Gregg's (a.k.a. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Agent Colson) scheming NYC zoo official who covets the six penguins because they're of the rarer gentoo breed.

I was somewhat impressed when I learned thru the bonus features that there's a higher percentage of real penguins in action here than one would assume. (Obviously the scene in which Carrey dances with the penguins is CG-rendered.) Several of the penguins are given enough character traits that they stand out. We learn that "Captain" suffers from flight envy. That "Nimrod" tends to bump into and fall over things. That "Stinky"... well, you can guess his specialty. The others Lovey, Bitey, and Loudy are descriptive enough. The birds' ridiculous antics won me over. Jim Carrey tones his stuff down, as well, and this is a welcome thing. And I did love his compulsively alliterative personal assistant Pippi (Ophelia Lovibond). I recommend this family flick for those who think penguins are funny. But for those who couldn't care less about penguins meaning that there's no buffer or filter thru which the bad bits can be digested there are moments in the movie that simply defy believability (like a penguin hang-gliding) and they well may hike up ye olde blood pressure. MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS is not subtle. You'll see every plot point coming, predict every pratfall. It'll be as if you're watching the addled Mirror Universe version of the MARCH OF THE PENGUINS. But the kids will laugh themselves silly. I did, too.
