The Pool Boys (2011)

The Pool BoysThere have been a million teenage sex romps made through the years, and there will be a million more. With such a vast pool (no pun intended, okay--maybe it was intended) to choose from, it becomes increasingly difficult for a film to distinguish itself from the enormous pack. "The Pool Boys" is a lightweight endeavor that may certainly appease those looking for something familiar and comfortable. I would never compare this film to "American Pie," but the DVD proudly proclaims the distinction "From the Creators of American Pie" as it wishes to cash in on that film's popularity. To my mind, "The Pool Boys" plays more like the slapstick cousin of "Risky Business" minus any element of realism. It's pure silly escapism--harmless enough if you like that sort of thing, but lacking any real cleverness or outrageousness. The movie tries for shocking craziness, but it carts out tired cliches, stock characters, and expected sight gags that feel cobbled together from a dozen different movies. The actors certainly try to sell it, it just doesn't seem particularly fresh.

Brett Davern plays a recent graduate who, thorough a twist of circumstances, comes to Los Angeles to work a summer job for his successful cousin (Matthew Lillard). Of course, Lillard might have been overstating his success story and is really just a pool cleaner. The two start working together for a roster of wacky and eccentric clients, but a new business opportunity soon presents itself in the form of a squeaky clean escort (Rachelle Lefevre). Before you can say "prostitution comedy," the trio have holed up in a Hollywood mansion and solicited the locals for a wild sex party. Of course, if you've seen any number of these movies--nothing will come as a surprise to you. It isn't nearly as racy and titillating as it seems to believe it is. Oh, here's someone getting whipped, here's someone dressed like a dog, here's Tom Arnold unconvincingly (and quite loudly) playing himself. Of every joke or visual gag, I'd say that 90% have been utilized in other films of a similar nature. The movie isn't content to be just a ribald sex romp, though, it also wants to be sweetly romantic.

Look, I'm not criticizing the genre. If you want to be rude and provocative, go for it! Don't play it safe, be really outrageous! Lillard (and his ill-fitting speedo) may be the film's saving grace. He actually strikes an interesting balance between obnoxious and likable. He should set his sights higher, though, he's getting a little old to keep capitalizing on his man/child persona (heck, he plays a significant role in the Oscar contender The Descendants). Here's the deal. "The Pool Boys" is a silly movie that has no pretensions or aspirations other than to be a silly movie. That's fine and can certainly be entertaining. I just wish more of its ideas and humor hadn't been so familiar and so expected. For most of the movie, I felt like I was watching a sitcom rerun as opposed to something new and original. KGHarris, 12/11.

Just bought the DVD on Amazon and absolutely LOVED it! definitely one of the funniest movies i've seen in a while. All I want to do now is go eat at Olive Garden! hahaha. Rochelle is breathtakingly gorgeous and Brett Davern and Matthew Lillard are quite the dynamic duo! Can't wait to see more of Brett in MTVs Awkward now!

Hilarious movie! One word: statue. And I have never held the Olive Garden to the high esteem I now do omg, too funny! Matthew Lillard and Rachelle Lefevre were great in this and I really love all the old favs like George Takei and Tom Arnold that make some of the scenes in the film so memorable. Efren Ramirez the dancing is priceless. For the guys, plenty of hot chicks scantily clad Patricia de Leon and Sheena Lee and a ton more. All-in-all a fun way to vegge out and let off some steam for an hour and a half. Definitely will see again and again!

Zoolander (2001)

ZoolanderBest comedy ever made. True wit. Fourteen more words required. Green is my favorite color. Will Ferrell isn't awful in this.

This movie is pretty silly, but we have always loved it so we had to get it in Blu Ray.

I have this on DVD and love it so much I have been looking for it on Blu-Ray. First attempt of getting this movie failed when I tried to get it fulfilled by a seller that did not go through Amazon. After full refund I awaited till Amazon had it back in stock for them to fulfill. With as hard to find as this is, only get it if fulfilled by Amazon.

Plays well in a LG Blu-Ray player in the U.S. no region code issues. Not sure if it really has been optimized for high deff or not, but I think it looks better than the DVD I had of it.

Crank 2: High Voltage (2009)

Crank 2: High VoltageI enjoyed how unique the first Crank film was and this sequel is even more wild, but I liked it a lot less. Crank: High Voltage is a roller coaster ride that last 85 minutes and features some really gross scenes. For example, a guy getting a shotgun rammed up his rear end isn't even in the top three weird moments in this flick. There was one scene where a guy had to punish himself for letting his boss down, which I had to turn my head and look away (I can't remember the last time I did that). There is almost zero realism here, much like the original, only multiplied by a hundred. Jason Statham is the main action star in the business right now and he is pretty good at what he does. He went all out here and I'm sure he has nothing but bruises and a nice paycheck to show for it. The large supporting cast was better than average and Amy Smart was especially yummy. If you liked Crank (2006) you will probably enjoy this one well enough, but I think they should put this series to rest. Judging by the ending during the credits, I'm sure we can expect Crank 3-D: Zombie Chev in the near future.

This movie made me feel like I was high and drunk while watching an action film, I don't really know how to explain that, but it was an awesome feeling. I also thought it was extremely hilarious and it was a really good sequel. After three months, Chev Chelios is back in action, and tries to find his heart before he dies. Doc Miles tells him that the Chinese gave him an AbioCor Artificial heart, and he must keep it charged, or he will die. He has jumper cables helping him, rubbing up against an old woman, makin' sweet love to his girlfriend, Eve on a horse race track, and grabbing electric wires. I highly recommend CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE!!!

Buy Crank 2: High Voltage (2009) Now

How much abuse can one body take? When we last left Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), he had fallen from a helicopter, bounced off a car, and landed on a street in the middle of Los Angeles. And this was after being injected with a toxin that stopped the production of adrenaline. Now he finds himself in the middle of an operating room, his still-beating heart removed from his chest and replaced with an artificial version that's hooked up to a battery. When the battery gets destroyed, he's left with only an implanted backup generator, and in order for that to keep working, he must keep himself electrically charged. Sometimes, that involves sticking his finger into a car socket. At other times, that involves clamping jumper cables to his nipple and tongue, at which point the person behind the wheel hits the accelerator.

The original "Crank" was shameless, high octane fun, and so is "Crank: High Voltage," a film that doesn't know the meaning of the word "excessive." There's not a trace of humility to be found in any one of its ninety-six minutes. It's an unabashedly crude crime caper that uses four-letter dialogue as if being paid by the letter. It's an in-your-face assault on the senses, a hyperactive video game that never makes use of the pause button. Normally, these would be the hallmarks of a God-awful film, but in this case, they're the hallmarks of a stylish thrill ride that's just as funny as it is shocking. It's a movie so audacious in its insanity that I pretty much have to recommend it; it may not be the most edifying thing you'll ever see, but it certainly will be the most unforgettable hour-and-a-half you've had all spring.

The story: An Asian gangster named Johnny Vang (Art Hsu) is somewhere in Los Angeles with Chelios' heart, which is said to be indestructible and therefore perfect for harvesting. Chelios, with only a weakly powered artificial heart to work with, goes on a frantic search, stopping every so often to recharge. Along the way, he meets a number of ... interesting people. There's his old flame, Eve (Amy Smart), who now works as a stripper. There's a Chinese prostitute named Ria (Ling Bai), who clings to Chelios like a dog in heat and uses language that would make a sailor blush. There's Venus (Efren Ramirez), who's on a mission to avenge the death of his twin brother, Kaylo. Chelios has an occasional phone conversation with Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakam), who was once a heart surgeon before losing his license.

The movie is filled with unbelievable moments, but there are three in particular so priceless that I have to describe them. The first takes place at Hollywood Park, where a horse race is being held. Miles tells Chelios that, in a pinch, skin to skin friction will generate enough static electricity to keep his battery going. When Eve learns of this, she and Chelios begin creating their own "friction"--in the middle of the racing track to a cheering crowd of thousands. The second takes place in a power grid. Chelios and Vang start fighting, at which point the scene turns into a cheesy Asian monster movie, complete with unconvincing miniatures and makeup effects. The third is a strange flashback sequence revealing Chelios as a child (Billy Unger). He and his mother are on a talk show discussing why he became such a juvenile delinquent.

None of this has any real bearing on the story; they're nothing more than excuses for the movie to be ill-mannered and/or goofy. There are, of course, many other instances of these extremes, but they're all so over the top that I probably wouldn't be able to describe them anyway.

I leave it to you to see what happens at the end. Let it suffice to say that the shot before the end credits perfectly sums up everything the filmmakers set out to do. It would not be enough to say that this movie is bizarre; it's so outlandish that it pretty much defies the conventions of genre. Comparisons can be made to "Shoot `Em Up," Michael Davis' no-holds-barred, brilliantly original action film from 2007 that made use of stylized violence and a delightfully sick sense of humor. Both films also feature a British leading man. This leads me to why "Shoot `Em Up" is the more successful film: Clive Owen gave us a performance we hadn't seen him give before. Jason Statham, on the other hand, has starred almost exclusively in extreme action films, so there's very little he can do to surprise us.

Nevertheless, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy this movie, and it has everything to do with how far it goes. There's a difference between a movie that goes too far and a movie like "Crank: High Voltage"--the latter goes so far, it actually surpasses offensiveness and becomes entertaining. This is cinematic decadence at its most potent, an unbridled foray into the mind-numbing depths of action, comedy, and yes, even sex. One of the earliest cues is given by John de Lancie, who plays a TV anchorman; he describes the events of the first film as implausible. No, he doesn't just say the word. He pauses momentarily before accenting the word, as if to let the audience know that they're in store for yet another round of sheer lunacy. The writing/directing team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor could have made a tamer film, I suppose, but like Chev Chelios, they're hearts just weren't in it.

High Voltage is essential for those that like their junk movies tasteless and baseless. I for one is pretty versatile when it comes to films and for those who know me can vouch for it. After I'd seen Crank 1 I couldn't wait to see Crank 2. It moves at such a frantic pace that you will probably miss a few things during the first viewing so I had to see it twice.

For those of you who don't know story wise, don't sweat it. It's just as bad as the previous installment. Voltage beings where the original ended with the Stath falling a mile from a helicopter and bouncing off a parked car dead presumably, but no because the Chinese warlord responsible for his original poisoned predicament has Staham's Chev Chelios scraped off the roadside and deposited in a makeshift surgical theatre where his heart, strong enough to survive the original film and so a desirable commodity for his wizened nemesis, is extracted and replaced with a battery powered stopgap designed to keep him alive and his organs fresh for transplantation. You'd be forgiven for losing the thread at this point but the movie is only 5 minutes old when Chelios thankfully regains consciousness and on Doctor's orders, begins a hunt for his real heart while subjecting himself to electric shocks to keep the temporary one functioning.

That, if you can believe it, is the setup, and you won't be shocked to learn that it's a fairly sober foundation for what follows. Shot on prosumer camcorders, Crank 2 is saturated in the promise of bargain basement vulgarity and doesn't disappoint. Edited with an eye for the absurd, it feverishly presses on across ninety monged out minutes in which guns are inserted into rectums, nipples sliced from torsos, fights segue into Godzilla style monsters battling against miniatures (with actors in caricatured masks of Statham and his enemy battling it out) and in the funniest sequence, Geri Halliwell appears in flashback as Mother Chelios, taking the young Chev to task on a talk show in which a few British cars and a reject from a mad max movie dressed as a British punk are dropped onto a Californian back lot for the least convincing but most enjoyable English flashback you've ever seen. Chelios may be a hard-line misogynist and causal racist, but there's something about the former Sydenham market trader that would make him likable. Jason Statham preforms brilliantly once again as Chev Chilos. But if you look closer to the film you will see cameo performance of Cory Haims(The Lost Boys) and David Carradine(Kill Bill).

Like I said if you can handle violence, blood, shootings, gratuitous nudity, foul and offensive language involving hilarious one liners from Jason Statham then give it a shot. It's a pure, mindless action taken beyond the extreme and I loved every minute of it.

For those who have experienced problems playing Crank 2 on blu ray follow the instructions below.

Let's summarize what is required to get this title to play on profile 2.0 players with NO internal memory for BD Live.

1) You MUST install an SD card or USB stick. Which ever is required for your specific player

2) Internet connection is NOT required. Actually, it's preferred you disconnect the Ethernet cable from the player so there are no attempts to "call home"

3) When prompted to Updated, click NO. This allows you to bypass the EULA and quicker boot up since the player/title won't be searching an update.

As many of you I had troubles to play the movie on my Blu ray player but I did a search on the Internet to get a solution to my problem and I found the instructions from a guy on the Internet (Betamax75) the information is courtesy of Bluray.com

You don't need to upgrade your firmware just follow the instructions and the movie will play. In mi case I have a Sony BDP-S350. I installed the USB stick, put the disc on the player a let the disc to load and then the movie start working without a problem. I hope this can help you.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (2013)

Ace Ventura: Pet DetectiveAce Ventura, for the most part, is a perfect vehicle for Jim Carrey. I was pleased with the film the first time I saw it. I have, however, seen it on network TV, and have found out that there are many more scenes present in the TV version not shown on the DVD. These scenes not only make the film better, but also more undestandable.

If at all possible, could we see a WIDESCREEN EXTENDED CUT, Mr. Shadyac???

Thank you very much.

"Ace Ventura Pet Detective" is a vehicle that is tailor-made for the comedy genuis of Jim Carrey. In his first major comedy, Carrey absolutely carries this picture on top of his broad and very funny shoulders! Carrey will tickle your funny bone in this riotous picture.

Carrey plays "Ace" a pet detective, who gets involved in solving the missing case of a dolphin from the Miami Dolphin's training camp. Co-starring the gorgeous Courtney Cox and believe it or not, Dan Marino, the plot has so many funny moments that I cannot begin to list them all. The jokes fly at you about every second minute, so if you don't like one, just wait for the next! I guarantee you will laugh out loud several times and give your tummy muscles a good workout in doing so.

Carry is a genius in facial expressions that will tie your funny bone in knots. His physical comedy ranks with that of Lucille Ball. Carry establishes his comedic "star" in this flick.

If you want to relax and take your mind off your worries and just laugh out loud, then this is the film for you! I highly recommend it! It is easily in my top-10 comedies of all time.

Jim Carrey's work in Pet Detective is just short of Brilliant. Funny thing was, he was mostly being himself. Don't let the movie premise fool you. The character of Ace Ventura is not a bumbling detective who lucks out in his cases, he is actually smart and knows what he's doing. This is what I most liked about this movie. He outwits the police at many turns, staying far ahead of them on the case of the missing mascot for the Miami Dolphins, a field goal kicking Bottlenose. In his efforts he befriends, and beds, pre-friends fame, Courtney Cox (say that ten times fast). Even stranger, they seem to have great chemistry. Sean Young plays the hard-nosed Police Lt. I couldn't tell if she was hamming up her reputation as a difficult actress or just over playing the part really well, it was obvious that she wasn't taking this movie very seriously. In any case, this movie can't be taken too seriously anyway, although it does on some levels, but it works. This film marked the first in three successful films that Carrey made with Director Tom Shadyac; `Liar Liar' and `Bruce Almighty' followed. Both movies were hits as well. I love this movie I found it hysterical. But if you don't like Carrey at all, then you probably won't like `Ace', but if you have found yourself even smiling at his goofiness and rubber-face antics, this movie should make you feel good. Although there was a sequel, and it started out ok, it is no where near the level of the first.

The cable networks such as TBS and USA have for years been showing a version of this movie with several deleted scenes that were never in the theatre and still aren't available on DVD. At a time where every studio is re-releasing special editions of every movie under the sun, how in the world has this comedy classic not gotten the royal treatment? I suppose Warner Studios has an exclusive deal with USA and TBS so that only they can show the "special" version of this movie. That's not cool.

The deleted scenes include additional insane asylum scenes and another scene where Ace visits his friend at the heavy metal club. He winds up on stage with the band "Cannibal Corpse" and graps the mic and starts screaming into it and flailing around on stage like a fish then stage dives onto the crowd. anyone fortunate enough to have seen this deleted gem probably wet themselves because it's so funny. And it's not available on DVD!!!

This movie gets 5 stars but the DVD get's 1 star for awful. Do not go in there! I think it's the pate.

I don't know what's up with all these people who give these bad reviews to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. I think this is amoung the Top 3 movies EVER! The character is perfect for Jim Carrey and the film is just plain and simply funny! He throws out constant one-liners that will keep you laughing everytime you quote them (If it gets cold enough... if you've seen the movie you're laughing). The best part about this movie is that no matter how many times you've seen it the sheer fun of watching it will keep you coming back, which is what makes this the perfect movie to own! Mine's so worn I'll have to replace it soon (thank-you DVD). Now, I'll be fair, I'm a huge Carrey fan so that probably tilts the scales in his favor but even so, the actual movie IS good! Sure the plot is a bit outrageous, but it's a COMEDY! Lighten up people, it's supposed to make you laugh, not make you think, and believe me, it makes you laugh. It's also got it's fair share of stars (Jim Carrey, Courtney Cox, Tone Loc) and not to mention a certain Hall-of-Fame football player (Dan Marino). In summary, this movie's got everything from comedy to stars. It's the perfect movie to watch over and over again and you'll never get sick of it. I would have given it 6 stars, but they wouldn't let me...

The next morning while he tries to make it up to them by cleaning the house, he visits destruction upon them again. Watch for the two pradas and some "shocking moments " lol. Very funny. Lots of situational humor in this one.

He hasn't met his son in law yet and now he is being pointed out by the estate owner as Akshay. Oh what a web we weave . All sister in laws lies are causing a hilarious mess . This is a fun web , Feel free to get ensnared and enjoy the hilarious moments of nonstop laughs and tears behind every door in this very full house.

I would rather read every subtitle in the universe than be subjected to any more souless Zombie techno crap from hollywood that lacks investment in the character. If we don't care about the character than why would we watch it , remember it, or recommend it... Akshay Kumar's eyes deliver. The silly elation of new love, hope or despair, the joy of acceptance of ones family ...He connects with us on every level. Keep the hits comming King Kumar.

Aarush (Akshay Kumar) is that badnaseeb whose very presence makes things go haywire for those around him. When he finally marries a girl, he thinks his run of bad luck will end. In fact, it begins with renewed vigour as she leaves him for an Italian and off goes Aarush into the deep seas of Italy where he is saved by another beauty. Has he found his love? Has his streak of bad luck ended? It is this thin premise that Sajid hangs his entire comedy on.

This is one more of those 'leave your brains behind' flicks. Frankly, if you do try to stop looking for logic, you may have a blast. The gags are situational and hilarious at times. On other occasions, they do draaaaaaag!

Akshay Kumar has to sleep walk through this role. Riteish Deshmukh, as usual, once again provides hilarious support. It is left to the babes to bring in some zing to the tale. Jiah Khan sizzles and more. Sadly, her role is short. However, she slams hard to make an impact and put the other two girls in the shade. I wonder what would have happened if there was more of Jiah with Lara Dutta and Deepika Padukone.

American Reunion (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2012)

American ReunionWhen "American Pie" came out in 1999 it was a box office smash. It was a movie that cost $10 million and banked over $235 million. That was enough to spawn two legit sequels and two not-so-legit sequels. The two legit sequels, "American Pie 2" & "American Wedding", in my opinion, failed to capture the magic of the first movie. "American Pie" was about high school kids, teen angst and sexual exploration but the thing that put it over the top was the honesty and truthfulness behind it. They weren't afraid to tackle taboo subjects, but they did it with honesty. The sequels relied too heavily on the angst and gross out jokes.

Another thing "American Pie" did was make stars out of Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid and Seann William Scott. All of them rose to quick fame and some of them, Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother), have managed to hang onto that fame or increase it. Some of them have fallen right off the map, so it was a perfect time for a sequel and a return of the old cast. They are all back and sure, they all needed career boosts, but they also came back for good reason. The script for "American Reunion" is better and the audience that came to the original movie grew to love the characters.

There are jokes that are rehashed from the original and the raunchy nature of the films is completely intact, but more importantly the writers remembered the truth and honesty that pushed "American Pie" over the hump. Of course the laughs were important as well.

The best part about "American Reunion" is that they gave veteran actor and SCTV alum, Eugene Levy (Splash, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show), a big part in this one. Having been a widow for the past three years, he's content with his Sudoku and nights at home alone until his son returns for his 13-year class reunion. Once out of the house, he steals the show.

"American Reunion", much like the entire series, isn't for everyone. It is offensive and at times gross, but at the same time it manages to be poignant and truthful. It is an entertaining film with all the characters returning 13-years later in real life as well. We all need our friends and if you were invested in the characters 13-years ago, you won't want to miss this either.

Just got back from a sneak preview of this and I LOVED it.

If you liked American Pie and it's first sequels (and their raunch level), you will really enjoy this great return from the original cast.

The Class of 1999 gets together for their 13th year reunion (really? 13th? well, that's not going to spoil the rest of the movie) and we get to catch up with what life after high school is like for everyone. For the most part, everyone's personalities are the same, and the writers and actors did a great job of projecting those characters into adulthood. Although projecting an older Stifler still doesn't seem like "adulthood..."

I don't want to give away any of the jokes, but this was a really funny movie.... funnier than I expected, to be honest. And not only will the audience be consistently laughing out loud, but viewers will also feel an unexpected nostalgia in watching.

As I said, I did expect it to be funny, but this movie is MUCH better than I expected.

As with other crude comedies, this will probably play slightly better in the theaters, because of audience reactions, but this is a wonderful return from the cast, and is very well written and directed.

Go see this movie!

I am going to repeat the title of this review. I don't care what anyone says, I love the American Pie movies. Not the crappy, straight to DVD portions of it, but 1, 2, American Wedding and this little gem. Despite the gross-out gags and gratuitous nudity, the American Pie franchise is actually quite sweet and a very conservative heart beats underneath. Good films versus great ones usually work out that way. You think its about one thing, and it surprises you with depth. When I first saw American Pie, I didn't want to go, thinking it would just be another vapid, teenage sex comedy. I was dragged kicking and screaming (I wanted to see The Haunting) and it turned out to be a gem. The other films have continued this funny but deep trend. If you can handle it, I would suggest this film.

Well, I am 25 now, and for awhile I've been struggling with some feelings concerning the things I used to like not being relative or popular anymore, moving onto new hobbies and leaving other things I was constantly into behind, having a broader view on many different subjects, having different opinions on things that I used to feel a certain way about, etc. To put it mildly, I am growing up. I've realized it's important to hold onto things from your past, but you also have to be ready, both feet planted on the ground and facing forward, for the future and what it brings as life continuously changes. To live in the past is death, and I feel that this movie perfectly sums up my feelings and gives them a voice.

I was expecting way more off color jokes, but this movie was SURPRISINGLY deep to me. If you are a warm blooded male, you can remember a time when chasing women was a main reason for living at one point...which has pretty much been the backbone of the American Trilogy...Hey, Stiffler and Finch, were all about Cadence in "American Wedding" despite Jim and Michelle tying the note being the big deal in that film. But here the tone is DRASTICALLY changed. The boys are still themselves, but older. New challenges arise, as they do with any grown man who is heading into adulthood and away from the care-free days of being a teenager or young adult in their early 20's.

Also, Jim's mom being dead (I hope I didn't spoil this, but I assume we all saw the previews) and the challenges faced by Jim's father, Noah, in moving on also struck a cord with me ( I lost my mother this year) and gave this film a "REAL" feeling. So we not only saw, young thirty somethings dealing with the loss of youth and the expectations of adulthood, but we also witnessed an elderly man recovering from the heart break of losing the love of his life and the mother of his son. (SOMETHING ANY MARRIED PERSON WHO STICKS IT OUT UNTIL THE END WILL UNFORTUNATELY COME TO ONE DAY)

Most of all, I think the challenges faced by the boys (I mean, men) in their marriages and dealing with their relationships struck the deepest with me because they were authentic problems I think all adult males will run into some of them, at some point in their lives. How they were all handled though, came off as beautiful to me. Watch Vicki's and Kevin's scene at the actual reunion, towards the end of the film, and tell me you don't feel your heart get tugged at a smidge, if not a lot, at the dialogue and how it's finalized.

Keep an open mind and you will enjoy this. When I was young...The adults I saw in their 20's and 30's were "The Real Adults" to me. Anyone over that, was an "old person." Well, funny how things work out. I am sure kids now look up to me as "A real adult" and my father, uncles, and their friends are now "The Old people," when they used to be "The real adults"...funny how things change, but still stay the same overall...and that's the perfect way to describe this film. The tone is EXTREMELY different, but the characters are still the same, and still extremely enjoyable. As one character said in the film to another (I think it was Choir chick to Chris)..."You are so different, but you are still the same."

If you are going to see 1 movie in theaters for a long time, make it this one. Thanks for reading, and maybe bring some kleenex, if you are emotionally mature and inclined to being moved by well done movies.

Dogtooth (2011)

DogtoothCertainly one of the more surprising moments of the 2010 Academy Award nominations had to be the inclusion of the Greek oddity "Dogtooth" among the Best Foreign Film nominees. This psychological freak show seems designed to polarize audiences with its controversial presentation of an isolated family as a horror construct. The film, with relatively no political or social context, is likely to be interpreted in many ways by viewers searching for a grand significance to the proceedings. Having seen the film twice now, however, I'm not sure that I can really establish the filmmaker's true intentions with any veracity. So I won't try. Somewhere between perverse satire, bent domestic drama, and disturbing psychological horror lies the film "Dogtooth"--a challenging and unrepentantly bleak, yet undeniably gripping and fascinating, example of experimental cinema.

"Dogtooth" depicts the unorthodox life of one family. The three teenage children have been raised in a controlled environment in which they've seemingly never left the family's secluded estate. Subjected to the teaching of their parents, they know nothing of the real dangers or inherent freedoms available in the outside world. As their story unfolds, in horrifying daily detail, the complete destruction of their psyches, intelligence, and individuality at the hands of their parents is absolutely repellant. This truly is one of the more disturbing depictions of psychological torture (even if the kids don't know it!) that has ever been captured on film. Not graphically violent, but emotionally disconcerting, this film will insinuate itself into your mind--and it's absolutely unsettling. One girl, in particular, starts to act out in increasingly violent ways and, as much as we do want to protect them, kids will grow up to experience life in ways we might not have intended.

To be sure, I love to be surprised by film--the more offbeat or skewed the better. In describing a movie's narrative for others, I try to only paint a picture in broad strokes and not spoil the mysteries yet to unfold. That's why I've been purposefully vague in my description (although, there is some controversial sexual content which might offend certain viewers). With "Dogtooth," however, I might make a disclaimer. This will not be a film for everyone--those that dislike "Dogtooth" will invariably hate it with every fiber of their being! Those that like "Dogtooth," however, will be caught up in a story unlike any other. I was unable to pull my eyes away from this film. Like a disturbing nightmare, my curiosity kept me glued to the every frame of this movie. It is well acted and well made--but this is just a caution to more sensitive viewers. "Dogtooth" disturbed and confounded me, in almost every way, but I was unable to tear myself away from its sick allure. KGHarris, 1/11.

What if you could be the master of your own universe, able to make everything to your own specifications and liking? And what if, in that universe, you could have absolute control over your subjects, so that, not only would they have to do what you told them to, but you could even go so far as to shape the very way they look at the world?

The unnamed middle-aged protagonist (Christos Stergioglou) of "Dogtooth" has created just such a kingdom for himself and his wife (Michelle Valley), tucked away in a rural area of Greece, where the two of them have raised their children a boy (Christos Passalis) and two girls (Aggelika Papoulia, Mary Tsoni) who are all now in their late teens in such complete isolation that the kids have virtually no knowledge of the world that lies beyond the fenced-in little compound in which they live. They know only that it is a dangerous and scary place and that none of them will be able to venture out into it until their dogtooth falls out which is to say never. They are so misinformed as to how the real world actually works that they think planes are just tiny objects moving through the air, and that if one of those tiny objects were to fall out of the sky and into their yard, the children would be able to pick it up and play with it like a toy. They've also been taught by their colluding parents to believe that prowling cats are a mortal menace to be destroyed on sight. The kids spend much of the day doing repetitive chores, playing meaningless games and being taught an incorrect vocabulary (they use the word "phone" when they really mean "salt," for example). The father regularly pays a young woman (Anna Kalaitzidu) he works with the only person from the outside world the children are allowed to meet to come and have sex with his post-pubescent son, and severely beats the kids every time they step out of line.

A stunning allegory about the evils of totalitarianism, "Dogtooth" is somewhat reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village" in its basic premise and setup, only here the guiding principle seems to be less about protecting the young ones from the harsh realities of a modern world and more about this one man's finding a way to achieve a kind of apotheosis for himself making himself a god in the eyes of his children. For not only does he make them reliant on him for all the basic necessities of life, but he's made it so that they accept without question the "truths" of the physical and moral order he's established for them to live by.

The man and his wife have together inverted and perverted the very definition of parenthood. Rather than grooming their children for an adult life in the real world, these parents deliberately infantilize their offspring, making it virtually impossible for them to leave the home and start a life of their own. This ensures that the kids will be there to take care of them for the rest of their lives.

On a broader scale, the movie is a searing indictment of the power of propaganda, showing how easy it is to mislead people and to compel them to do what one wants simply by feeding them false information and, thus, skewing their view of realty and the truth. And isn't this how totalitarian dictatorships are born and sustained? But there's also an innate desire for liberty and independence lurking in the recesses of every human soul that must finally assert itself in a desperate run for freedom, and the movie addresses that reality as well.

The movie is both raw and provocative as it takes on some rather touchy sexual themes mainly involving incest that some in the audience may find disturbing and discomfiting to put it mildly. There's also a fair amount of full-frontal nudity, brutal violence and more-than-simulated sex scenes in the movie.

Yorgos Lanthimos' direction is spare and stripped-down, as befits a parable, with off-kilter visual framing that heightens the bizarre nature of the piece.

"Dogtooth" is unnerving, thought-provoking and provocative and a must-see for the unconventional, adventurous movie-watcher.

Spoilers herein!!

Well, this film was highly anticipated by me (it had won the un Certain Regard prize at Cannes). The message is one of enclosed despair, it mirrors what it's like to be perpetually condemned to a preverbal state, and not having the tools to deal with it. It seems that, once play can no longer sustain oneself, one must retreat to a world of sexuality and aggression. Since the eldest daughter incorporated the nameless and hopeless lifestyle imposed by her parents, she was indeed an incarnation of their nefarious deeds. The only way to break free from their rules would be to attack their rules, and this could only be accomplished by attacking herself. The scene where she knocks her tooth out with a hammer is intense and realistic, yet behind pain and destruction there is beauty, in the disfigured and bloody smile leering back from the mirror. Life could no longer go on the way it had, the incestuous nature of the family unit had reached an extreme. In a bizarre bathtub scene, the brother sits there and gropes the naked bodies of his sisters, one at a time, I imagine in an attempt to see which causes him to be more aroused. As everything else that conveys true emotion in this family, the scene transpires in uncomfortable silence, the demon of preverbal communication again casting its shadow. Born preverbal, dead preverbal, as the labyrinth of abandoned speech is manifest in the eldest daughter's aborted escape, remaining locked in the car trunk, representing in a very vivid manner that, upon mustering the desire to leave the perverted Eden in whence she dwelled, she was in effect entering her coffin.

Dogtooth

A mid level industrialist raises his family in an environment devoid of most modern conveniences but imbued with a special hatred of airliners. The telephone is carefully hidden, only his wife knows where it is, a fence erected around the house is also a boundary the children and wife have never trespassed, but most of all, in order to keep his the two daughters and son uncorrupted, (their hatred of airliners and the people who fly on them apparently doesn't count) they have been taught a sanitized language where "zombie" is "a small yellow flower" and the female reproductive region is known as "keyboard". Periodically, the industrialist pimps for the boy, and for a price, procures the services of Christina, a security guard at the plant.

Just when Director Giorgos Lanthimos seems to remove all limits to the level of parental control, Christina shows an interest not only in the boy but also the two sisters, conferring on one of them VHS tapes of Rocky, Jaws and other classics in exchange for libidinous favors. The daughter, of course, emulates what she sees and hears on the tapes, and such an obvious clash of cultures ensues that it changes the relationships in the household. All of this sets up the question: does the influence on children come from parenting or from the culture around us? The film's answers seem ambiguous and unsatisfying. Thimios Bakatakis' camerawork is good but not inspired we want some kind of resolution at the film's end, and Bakatakis seems determined not to give us one.

This movie was interesting and entertaining, except for the end, which I thought was very unsatisfactory. It is the story of a truly strange family, yes, but beyond that there was little to capture your imagination or make you want to root for ANY of the characters. It only partially lived up to my expectations.

RiffTrax: Plan 9 From Outer Space LIVE! Nashville 2009 Blu-ray (2009)

RiffTrax: Plan 9 From Outer Space LIVE! Nashville 2009 Blu-rayI wasn't sure what to expect from this first RiffTrax Live event. By the time it was over, I'd laughed the hardest I'd probably laughed in a year or two!

Other than the two "riffed" films, there were some other short comedy bits of variable quality. There were some fake commercials, one of which I made our audience and I laugh, but the other not so much. This was my first, and likely last, experience with Jonathan Coulton. I know he is extremely popular in some circles, and if you are a fan I'm sure you'll like to see him here. Personally, I'm thankful that I can skip past him on the DVD.

On to the main films, both Plan 9 and the stewardess short were comedy gold. It was like an especially good old Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. The shots where they showed the guys off to the side while they ripped on the movie were a great idea. It was a lot of fun to see their expressions and when they even cracked each other up.

Mike, Kevin, and Bill definitely brought their A game for this one. If you enjoy RiffTrax or are an old MSTK fan like I am, I wholeheartedly recommend this.

My review is based on seeing the live performance back in August of '09. I don't think seeing the same performance on a smaller screen will be as funny, but it will still be side-splitting hilarious. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, & Bill Corbett are in great form and the results are well worth buying this DVD for your collection.

Perhaps the only worthy criticism is that they tried to make a "show" of it, highlighted by a somewhat nervous host ("Internet Superstar" Veronica Belmont), a couple of songs from Rich Kyanka that you can take or leave, and a funny performance by Corbett of "Plans 1 8". It certainly may have influenced the next Live Show (the "Christmas Shorts") which restricted itself to riffing the shorts alone.

We start with the highly riffable short, "Flying Stewardess" a trip into the late 40's to see what it was like to train as a "Stewardess". I'm sure this will be popular with all MST3K/Rifftrax fans across the country, save perhaps for the citizens of Ft. Worth, Texas, who's city gets a good natured skewering.

Getting to the main event, "Plan 9" is so terrible as a film that it doesn't matter that it was presented in faux-color (heavy on pastels in some scenes). The riffing was wonderful, but at one point when the alien commander gives an unreal long-winded speech the riffing stopped as the audience howled in the joy of the moment. So bad, so effeminent, so gawd-awful long it was that at the end when Corbett popped off, "I think that was one sentence." the theatre exploded.

If you were there, this DVD is a must. If you are a fan, this DVD should be in your collection. If you are not sure, I would suggest viewing the first two Rifftrax shorts DVDs to get the flavor of the comedy.

The world's first movie-riffing series using former cast members from Minnesota-based programs goes out and does a live show as beamed to movie houses nationwide. This program feels more natural that the studio riffs, signifying that the team is in full form. Also on the program is the mildly amusing musical comedy of Jonathan Coulton, as well as the Rifftones. Something Awful made some forgettable fake commercials, which are apparently extended on the DVD.

I was fortunate enough to see this LIVE when it ran the first time around (it was so popular that it had a "live" repeat performance a few weeks later same theaters) and I concur with the previous two reviews. While I did enjoy the attempt to (loosely) connect Coulton's Zombie song to the Plan 9 movie, the movie itself was the main attraction. I also attended the Christmas Shorts Live program which may or may not be released to DVD at sometime for home viewing and while they were still good clean fun (many more families I noticed were present at this theater, the same one where I saw Plan 9) and in true Rifftrax/MST3K form it just wasn't quite the same as this Live event.

I purchased mine direct from the Rifftrax site (which actually cost a bit more than the Amazon price) and I'm not disappointed that I can now share this evening of laughs with friends who weren't able to attend or just watch it myself again, and again, and again, and again... No matter how many times I see Plan 9 even without the Riffing just because it's the "Citizen Kane" of bad films but somehow the LIVE Riff even makes my old copy of the B&W Riffed version seem somehow inadequate. This one has the colorized version of the movie so if you want to be a purist just turn off your color bar and see it in the original GLORIOUS B&W version as originally released by Ed Wood to theaters in 1959. Either way just GET A COPY so you too can Laugh Out Loud!

I would highly recommend this to any fan of both RIFFTRAX and MST3K even with the music. As a previous reviewer said, you can forward fast the parts that you don't want to see if you just want the shorts and the movie. Peace out.

If you're an MST fan, you'll be glad to know the shtick lives on in Rifftrax with Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett continuing to provide the hilarity that helps us survive grade Z drek like "Plan 9 From Outer Space." This is a live show done in a theater in Nashville with our heroes riffing as the movie is shown to an appreciative audience. This makes for a fun atmosphere, and they throw in a few surprises along the way and have a couple of guests. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
