American Wedding (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (2003)

I really should dislike this movie, because the comedy is even more disgusting and base than the previous movies in this series, but when the movie is funny, it's hilarious, and I couldn't stop laughing. Be warned, however, that much of the humor comes from gross situations.

In this edition, Jim Levinstein (Jason Biggs) asks Michelle Flaherty (Alysson Hannigan) to marry him. The big moment is to happen in a very nice restaurant. Jim hints that he wants to ask Michelle a very important question, and his hinting about is misinterpreted by Michelle, who crawls under the table to do what she thinks Jim wants. In the mean time, Jim's dad, played by SCTV alumni Joe Levy, shows up and sits in Michelle's chair, unaware that she is under the table. Michelle goes unnoticed until Jim's dad mentions the wedding proposal, which causes Michelle to bump the underside of the table. Jim jumps up, his pants are down, and it's embarrassment and pandemonium. As funny as this scene is, it gets better, or worse, depending on how you look at it, from there.

The movie ends up being a series of gags from beginning to end, that are both funny and often disgusting. Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) is often involved in many of these scenes. In one scene Steve and Jim are in the library with a dog when an accident with a cake happens. When Jim's dad opens the library door to bring in Michelle's parents, Steve and Jim appear to be in a very bizarre position with respect to the dog. You'll have to see this one to understand it or believe it.

There are another pair of scenes that are related involving a gay bar, a bachelor party, with Stifler involved, of course, and Michelle's parents. While not every moment of these scenes are funny, they are in several places, and I found myself laughing all the way through the scene where Jim is supposed to be having dinner at home with Michelle's parents.

Stifler manages to get himself invited to the wedding, and even manages to convince Michelle's mother to let him carry the wedding ring. Unfortunately Stifler manages to lose the ring, which a small dog then eats. How Stifler gets the ring back is simultaneously funny and gross.

While Stifler acts like the jerk he is for much of the movie, near the end we see Stifler make a mistake, and then pull out the stops to correct his error. For just a moment we get to see Stifler actually act like a human, and the movie turns out all right.

I watched many of the extra features on the DVD. The two features I thought were the best were the deleted scenes and the outtakes. Watch them after seeing the movie.

I gave this movie three stars even though it was a laugh-fest all the way through. Much of the humor is gross and disgusting, and the situations used to get the laughs are totally unrealistic and bizarre (well, none of these have ever happened to anyone I know). If you enjoyed the first two "American Pie" movies, you'll enjoy this one as well. Definitely not a family movie and many adults will find portions of the movie a bit too bizarre to be enjoyable. However, for those who like Mad Magazine and can handle gross jokes, this movie is a blast.

This is DEFINATELY one of the FUNNIEST movies of the year! I give mad props to the director for creating such a incredible and hillarious movie. Like many people have said, I thought it would be a total letdown without some of the other characters but after watching the movie, I wasn't disappointed at all. To be honest with you all, I truly do believe that this is the BEST movie in the series. This made me laugh my mouth off from start to finish and the plot to the story was incredibly done. I also believe that the actors and actresses put their best effort to make a great ending to the series. However, this does get me questioning: will this movie truly end the series? I highly believe that there will be another one (I'm hoping too) and I'm sure a lot of people out there would want to see another AMERICAN PIE once they see this. There are some funny scenes and scenes you won't want to miss in this movie! The scene where Stifler enjoys the dogs licking his pants has to be the funniest scene I have seen so far this year! The bachelor's party is the best scene by far... see it and you will understand why this is so. The most disgusting scene is where Stifler eats the dog's crap, to save Michelle's mom from eating it (she believes it's chocolate and Michelle's mom loves eating chocolate). It was so disgusting, it put me off my food after seeing that bit but that definately wasn't a let-down to the movie. Another disgusting part which will make you jump off your seats is the part where Stifler is in a rush to meet Cadence in the closet. It's dark so Stifler cannot see and believes Cadence is in there so he starts feeling up "Cadence". Eventually, you'll find that Stifler is having sex with... Jim's grandmother when Finch opens up the door! There are some new characters added to the movie, like:

Michelle's hot as blonde sister, Cadence

Michelle's parents

Jim's grandma

and plenty more.

I really enjoyed this movie and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. There are a lot of excellent scenes in here and the movie is just fantastic. I would highly reccommend anyone to see this movie. It's so funny, even your parents will enjoy it. This is a great and memorable way to end the series, but I hope that AMERICAN PIE does come out.

I went to the cinema today to see the third and "last" part of the series, which kept me laughing in every movie.

And to my own surprise I noticed that this is definetely the best and funniest part of the series.

The jokes doesn't sounds old and it's still fresh and dirrty exciting. All the actors are great and the storyline is interesting and gives the audience a good and lovely "end" of a movie series that will stay in mind.

P.S.: My parents did also think that it is very funny.

I must say that while I am very satisfied with how they ended this series, I am a little sad to see Jim (Jason Biggs), Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and the gang leaving. Unlike most teen movies, the American Pie series actually gets you to care for the characters. I feel a slight connection to these characters. For example, I want to see Michelle again. The character, who has grown from a mere punch line into a frontman, is hilarious not to mention beautiful. When I heard that Alyson Hannigan was getting married in real life, I was a little sad (darn you Alexis Denisof), but it's not like I have a chance or anything. Also, Jim and Michelle are, in this way only, like my parents: my mom is Irish Roman-Catholic while my father is Jewish. Anyway, the movie follows the continuing exploits of Jim and Michelle before their wedding. They want the wedding to be perfect so they naturally choose NOT to invite Stifler (Seann William Scott), but he eventually is able to wrangle himself into the ceremony. Like Michelle, Stifler has grown in importance. In the first movie, he was a supporting character; he wasn't part of the group or the pact. In the second movie, the gang didn't want him at the beach house, but they needed him. In this one, they don't want him at the wedding, but he actually is the unofficial star of the movie. He and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) are both vying for Michelle's hot (but nowhere near as beautiful as Alyson) Cadence (January Jones) and they actually switch personalities; Stifler becomes cultured and polite (only in front of the Flaherty family) while Finch becomes the rude "Finchmeister". Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) doesn't have much to do besides add a little support to Jim. The film could have been done without him. I'm not saying that it should have been done without him, I'm just saying that it could have. I wanted the entire gang back, but I'll elaborate later. Meanwhile, Jim is trying hard to impress Michelle's parents while Michelle struggles to write her vows. As usual, laughs are inevitable while the characters struggle to achieve their separate goals: there is Stifler with the bachelor party, Jim and his nervousness, Michelle's dirty nature, and Finch's strange knowledge. If you liked the first two movies, you owe it to yourself to see "The Thrilling Climax". However, not everyone in the group decided to be a part of that climax. The one that I'm most surprised about is Oz (Chris Klein). He was part of the main group, something that Stifler was not. He was one of Jim's best friends and he wasn't even mentioned throughout the film. Also, he is a good counter-balance to Stifler: they are both popular jocks, but Oz is sensitive while Stifler is crass. Now if you have Oz, you have to have Heather. After all, the two are in love. If Heather was cut first, I can see why Oz wasn't there, but I don't understand why anyone was cut. Next is Vicky and Jessica. They are a pair, and while Vicky wouldn't have too much to do, Jessica (who would have Vicky with her for the ride) would be able to give advice to Jim and Michelle. Finally, there is Nadia, the only member of the lost gang who was even mentioned. I can understand why she was cut the most, however, she could have created some conflict for the two lovebirds. Before I wrap up this review, I must say this: be warned: there is a scene in this movie so disgusting that I almost threw up in the theater. I have never in my life come that close to barfing due to a movie in my life. So in conclusion,... It's like Michelle says in American Pie 2; you can't be too uptight. It causes problems. Enjoy this last piece of pie.

Tales That Witness Madness (1973)

Fans of "THE TWILIGHT ZONE", "TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE", and other horror anthologies will relish this ghoulishly entertaining four part horror film. The movie opens at an asylum in England run by Donald Pleasance who has just recently solved four fascinating cases. This leads to the four patients relating in flashbacks the shocking stories that led them to be brought to the asylum. The first tale, "Mr. Tiger", is about a boy who introduces his bickering parents to his IMAGINARY pet tiger. In "Penny Farthing", an old-fashioned bicycle sends its owner back in time to unveil a horrible crime. The third and best segment, "Mel", stars the beautiful and sexy Joan Collins as a housewife who finds herself competing with her husband's beloved pet tree! And the fourth and final segment, "Luau", is a riveting tale of voodoo and cannibalism featuring Kim Novak as a mother who is better off not knowing what's for dinner. A crazy compilation, but each tale is well-presented and strangely entertaining. A must for fans of way-out horror films. Directed by Freddie Francis reponsible for another equally creepy '70's mystery/horror anthology movie, the original TALES FROM THE CRYPT.

TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS brings us four tales of terror, helmed by reputable horror director Freddie Francis and released in 1973. HALLOWEEN's Donald Pleasance and the venerable British legend JACK HAWKINS frame the four tales with some kind of gibberish about Pleasance finding out the horrible "secrets" of four mental patients. The first is a little boy whose invisible tiger takes an intense dislike to his bickering parents (including Broadway's Georgia Brown in a surprisingly banal performance); Peter McEnery and Suzy Kendall fare a little better in the muddled, but spooky, tale of a bicycle that takes McEnery into the past, for what purpose, I never figured out; sultry Joan Collins and the bland Michael Jayston (NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA) play out a two-character drama about a wife jealous of her husband's new found "tree"; and the ever lovely Kim Novak overemotes her way through a lurid tale about human sacrifice and a particularly disturbing luau. More imaginative direction and some recasting might have made this a classic; however, as it is, it's fun to recapture the style of these horror movies of the 70s. Note that the score was done by Bernard Ebbinghouse, who helmed the Living Strings for several years in the 70s.

Until some months ago , when i streamed this fun little anthology , i had forgotten it even existed . I LOVE all the horror anthology pictures made by both Amicus and Hammer studios . Agreed , some are better than others and several titles have quite modest charms to recommend them . With this release , the United States has only the wonderful DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS yet to be released on dvd/bd in our region 1 format . These various films are seldom actually very scary by today's standards . They have history , assorted constaints , casts , writers , directors and so forth distilled into each delightful time capsule though . If retro horror fun IS your cup of tea ?

The Babymakers

This is two movies seeking to be one. It begins as an insightful yet funny look at how infertility affects a comedy. The couple have a delightful relationship where they solve the simpler problems well, which may be positive to watch yet lacks the conflict sought in many films, although the fertility issues looks with growing intensity. There is a long focus on this relationship with some laugh out loud hilarity among a serious examination of how infertility affects people.

The movie then shifts into a weird digressions as a slapstick comedy with much silliness. It sinks to racial humor. Overall, there is enough humor to make this a fun movie, The viewer should be prepared for an unorthodox cinematic journey.

If I had the option, it wouldn't even get one star. I couldn't even get through the beginning. Is this what they call rated R now a days??? It was none other than a porno with a longer story line. Animals included in human sex is not my idea of a good joke. Its demented and perverted.

The Cannonball Run (2011)

Cannonball Run is a guilty pleasure. No one would ever say it's a good movie, but it's a like train wreck, you find yourself staring. Burt Reynolds tries to live his glory days of Smokey and The Bandit, bringing along the same Director, Hal Needham as well as a slew of falling stars to prop him up. Its as if all of them knew their careers were sliding and it was one last ditch effort to make a great noise. Don't get me wrong, many of these people are talented. Lets explain the premise first. The 'Run' is an auto street (or highway) race, based closely on a real race that was run throughout the 70s that went from New York to California. It was highly illegal, and probably a lot a fun. There is even an appearance by one of the original drivers, Brock Yates, who is now an editor for Car & Driver Magazine and makes an amusing appearance as the MC, explaining how the race goes. Reynolds is JJ McClure, a former race car driver and mechanic who is the standing champ in the race. Eager to keep his title, he is desperate to win again. In this race though, that doesn't just mean going fast, anyone can go fast, but sooner or later, you will get stopped. JJ and his strange friend, Victor (Dom Delouse) adopt a personality of two paramedics driving a patient cross country. Apparently this worked in the actual race one year. The supporting cast of competition includes Jamie Farr as an overzealous Sheik in a hopped up Rolls Royce, Roger Moore playing a comic version of his James Bond character driving his popular silver Austin Martin, Mel Tillus and Terry Bradshaw playing a couple of southern boys cruising in a stolen race car and my personal favorite, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. playing womanizing, gambling hard drinking priests driving a red Ferrari (they aren't really priests). All this adds up to a movie where every scene you see a star. Dean and Sammy steal the show in almost every scene they're in, they are class acts adding something unattainable in most pictures of this caliber. The racing antics are not quite as funny as the beginning scenes where all the characters are introduced, but it is entertaining. The best part of the movie comes at the end though where the bloopers are shown during the closing credits. It's worth the price of the DVD alone. Don't expect a great movie out of Cannonball Run, all you can really expect is a good time, but isn't that what it's all about?

drive as fast and as safely as possible from Connecticut to Redondo Beach, California.

"The Cannonball Run" is based on real

characters and adventures. It was penned

by Yates, who makes an appearance in the early stages of the movie as the "organizer."

Burt Reynolds headlines an all star lineup as "J.J. McClure" a wealthy

entrepreneur who, along with his

'executive assistant' Victor Prinze,

played with great verve by comedian

Dom DeLuise. Victor has some issues.

In times of 'mortal danger' his personality changes from mild mannered

mechanic, into an alter-ego called

"Captain Chaos" who wreaks havoc on

some less than respectable hombres we encounter along the way.

Farrah Fawcett is teamed with J.J. and Victor when she's kidnapped in their ambulance.

Jack Elam as "Doctor Nikolas Van Helsing" provides lots of laughs

and few chills when needed.

Veteran performers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. join the ensemble as

a pair of priests in a souped-up Ferrari.

Roger Moore makes a departure from his

'James Bond' character playing "Seymor Goldfarb." An individual who believes he's

Roger Moore. It's a great spoof and Moore plays it with perfection.

Mel Tillis and former quarterback

Terry Bradshaw show up as just a

couple of good ol' boys ala "Dukes

of Hazzard" style, toting cases of beer but sans the "General Lee."

Tara Buckman and Adrienne Barbeau are seen throughout the film in their

custom black Lamborghini Countach,

breaking speed limits and the hearts

of some unsuspecting law enforcement

officers along the route.

Jamie Farr from "MASH" is cast in the role of a Sheik obsessed with winning the Cannonball

in a hot-rod Rolls Royce.

The Cannonball Run was directed by

Hal Needham who brought us "Smokey and

the Bandit" and "Hooper." Hal and Brock

were partners in a Cannonball held in the late 70S. Needham sets a flat out,

pedal to the metal pace for "Cannonball" and it doesn't let

up till the finish line.

After twenty years, this film still makes you laugh. Rent it tonight :)

I watched this because I adore Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, but only after putting off watching it for so long--I was afraid it would be really stupid and not be worthy of being Dean's next to last movie. I had no reason to fear :) . It is absolutely hilarious! The second one is a million times better (more Dean & Sammy and a huge plus with Frank), but this one's great. It's just crazy and silly and a ton of fun.

Okay, so I first saw this film at the age of 10, and we all know that a 10 year old is easier to please than an adult. However, I still love this film now (15 years later!), and not just for the fast cars and all-star cast. Of course the plot is almost non-existent but who cares? It's refreshing to see a film which doesn't take itself too seriously (a point that Dr Popinofsky seems to have missed in his review). It's called fun, Doc. F-U-N. If we're not allowed a bit of pointless fun from time to time what's the point of even getting out of bed in the morning?

I accept it's probably not to everybody's taste but it still makes me giggle!

I must admit that my expectations were not too high on purchasing this Blu-ray, but I'm glad I was wrong. The movie itself needs no real explanation, tons of stars (a little too much Burt Reynolds for my taste, though), fighting (Jackie Chan's first Hollywood movie) and fast cars add up to some great entertainment. Picture quality is very good considering the price and the disc even manages to squeeze in a commentary. The highlight has to be the out-takes displayed during the credits, so funny!

If you want a movie that doesn't require too many brain cells, this is the one for you. Just plain fun

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

With little to do in an unfamiliar town, I found myself sitting in a familiar place: a movie theater. My only choice was seeing John Tucker Must Die, which I'll admit I was less than thrilled to see. I just hoped that I hadn't wasted 8 bucks to eat overpriced popcorn. And I was pleasantly surprised: John Tucker Must Die is actually funny and cute. Granted, the title gives off an edgy feel, something this movie is completely devoid of, instead being a chick flicky, teen comedy in the same vein as 10 Things I Hate About You.

Kate (Brittany Snow) is the new girl at school. Her mom (Jenny McCarthy) has a tendency to skip town when things get rough in her love life (a la Hilary Duff's mom in The Perfect Man), so Kate is pretty clueless when it comes to love. Which is what makes her the perfect vessel for three girls to use in order to get back at John Tucker, who had been dating all three of them. So they set their seemingly evil plan in motion: get John Tucker to fall for Kate and then break his heart. But what happens when Kate begins thinking that there is more than meets the eye with John Tucker? That maybe, just maybe, he actually DOES like her and she actually likes him? Don't get too excited about a possible romance between Kate and John because there's another Tucker that Kate has her eye on. And he has his eye on her.

Instead of teetering between edgy and cute, the movie really should've picked a side and owned it. Edgy or cute. Pick one. Brittany Snow is absolutely adorable. She has that Reese Witherspoon quality about her, making you like her no matter what she does. And Jesse Metcalfe as John Tucker? Well, he's nice to look at, but I wonder why he left Desperate Housewives to, well, act in a movie that could be called Desperate Teenagers. Oh well. Good movie, cute plot, surprisingly un-cliche ending... RECOMMENDED!

John Tucker Must Die is just like all the other teen comedies of our time. We have the wallflower, Kate (played by Brittany Snow), who feels invisible because her mother is constantly moving them around on her search for the perfect man. Because she moves around so much, she feels invisible in school and finds it hard being the new girl. She desperately wants to fit in and decides to try harder.

At her new school a guy named John Tucker is the most popular guy--captain of the basketball team, loaded parents, the whole shebang. Her job as a waitress at the local restaurant lets her see the fact that John wines and dines a different girl every night of the week, all of them completely oblivious to the fact that he's cheating on them. He dates one of each high school stereotype: the pretty head cheerleader, Heather (Ashanti), the smart reporter, Carrie (Arielle Kebbel), and the vegan activist/whore, Beth (Sophia Bush). When they discover that they're getting played, the triumvirate bands together with Kate's help to give John a taste of his own medicine.

This movie is fun and cute, but just another teen movie. Think of any of the elements that made high school cinema great and they're present in this movie. The team of popular girls who get together to make the wallflower cute and popular (Heathers, Jawbreaker); the cute quirky guy who can never seem to get the girl (10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On); and the moral that popularity isn't really everything and you should just be yourself (Clueless, Mean Girls). It was a lighthearted comedy with plenty of laughs and some nice shots of Jesse Metcalfe in a thong. I think this would be fun for the same people who liked the movies mentioned above and those who don't take it too seriously.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

Joss Whedon was so upset with the way things were going on the set of the movie, for which he wrote the screenplay but over which he exercised no artistic control, that he walked off the set. Indeed, this is a very hard movie to watch today after the TV series. I did, in fact, moderately enjoy the movie when it first came out. I actually appreciated and enjoyed the absurd tension contained in the title, an airhead bimbo cheerleader called upon to be her generation's vampire slayer. But viewed today, the movie isn't terribly successful, and is in fact made much worse by the genius of the television series. It isn't just a question of Sarah Michelle Gellar being more appealing in the title role than Kristy Swanson (though SMG's much smaller stature increases the paradox of a tiny girl beating up large, supernaturally strong vampires) or the movie missing all the familiar characters of the show; the movie is almost completely devoid of its own style, look, and feel. Although the TV series started off on a tiny budget, it instantly had a compelling look and visual style that the movie completely lacks. Furthermore, on TV they managed a coolness and hipness that the movie never comes close to. Unfortunately, the series has pretty much reduced the movie to a curio.

Many talk of the movie falling short of Joss Whedon's vision in writing the original script. Actually, overall the plot isn't too terribly different. Buffy doesn't burn down the gym at the end in the movie as Whedon wrote, but while there are many stylistic differences, many of the main plot elements were retained. I find the main difference between the movie and the series to be in the "how" they tell the story rather than the "what" in the story. Cleverness and intelligence permeates the TV show; the movie is nearly entirely devoid of those qualities. Take the death of vampires. In the movie, they get staked and simply fall down. In the TV series, they explode, which is not merely a spectacular special effect used to great purpose, but, as Joss Whedon mentions on the DVD commentary, leaves less clean up as there are not bodies. Also, in the movie, there isn't anywhere near the emotional depth that one finds in the series.

Another part of the problem with the movie is the casting. Kristy Swanson isn't bad except when compared to Gellar, but Donald Sutherland is just dreadful. He plays his part as if he were a cartoon character, with a degree of camp that subtracts considerably from his humanity. In fact, the performances are almost uniformly awful. Not just Sutherland, but Rutger Hauer (someone I have loved in many other movies, especially in his Dutch films) and Paul Reubens create one almost unwatchable scene after another. David Arquette is at his worst here as well. In fact, the vampires are both poorly conceived and horribly executed, in contrast to the TV series. Many have noted the number of performers in supporting roles who later became well known, such as Ben Affleck, Natasha Gregson Wagner, and Hillary Swank (not to mention Stephen Root, who memorably played Milton the stapler guy in OFFICE SPACE)

On top of all this, the thing that set the TV show apart from most other forms of popular entertainment was the degree to which it allowed for deep interaction among the various character, something made virtually impossible by the short format of a film (and something that in the long run should prove to be television's innate superiority over film, if it can ever overcome the resistance of television network execs to produce art rather than vehicles for selling airtime for commercials--my fear is that BUFFY could be an exception rather than a harbinger of things to come).

In short, while not an awful movie, the movie version of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is not the masterpiece the television series is.

Pity poor Buffy (Kristy Swanson). She just wants to enjoy her life as a cheerleader/Valley girl when some scruffy old guy (Donald Sutherland) shows up and tells her she is "the Chosen One." You cannot believe how being a Vampire Slayer puts a crimp in a young girl's lifestyle. But when vampires (Rutger Hauer & Paul Reubens) are snacking on your classmates, what's a girl to do but grab some stakes and get down to some serious slaying. Fortunately, there is a cute guy (Luke Perry) as a bonus.

For fans of the hit television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the original movie is certainly a mixed bag. The strengths of the film come from Joss Whedon's script, which takes the ...idea of the blonde bimbo being chased by the monster and reverses it so that she end's up kicking the monster's butt. The weaknesses of the film come from director Fran Rubel Kuzui, who plays the whole thing for camp, personified by Paul Reubens over the top turn as "Lefty" and his agonizingly long death scene. But if you listen past the deliver to the actual lines, you can clearly find the foundation for the Buffy character on television.

Donald Sutherland lends a certain amount of weight to the proceedings as Buffy's Watcher, but Rutger Hauer's considerable presence is lost in his campy Vampire King. What looks the most out of place is the fighting style of Kristy Swanson as Buffy, which combines martial arts with gymnastics and cheerleading, which, again, fits more into the camp style of the film. Ultimately the direction overwhelms the promise of the script and we are left with basically a one-joke film that does not get too far off the ground. But if you compare this to the pilot for the television series, you certainly get a better feel for how Joss Whedon refined his vision of the Slayer.

This movie is funny. Unfortunately, it is dissected by the hardcore Buffy fans that were lured in by their love of the television series, and subsequently bashed.

I liked this movie back in the day, and I still enjoy it. I never watched Buffy the Vampire slayer on TV, so I don't hold a grudge against this movie as its predecessor.

If you watch this movie expecting what you saw on TV, you will be disappointed, but it's unfair to drag this movie into the mud just because it's not the same thing as the TV show.

Overall, it's a funny movie that will give you a few laughs and that you'll enjoy, as long as you don't watch it expecting Buffy from the WB series.

As many know, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now a cult hit tv show. This is what started it all. Joss Whedon wrote the script for the movie, but always envisioned it as a tv series. And although his script was tinkered with, for the movie, I think the movie turned out good. Of course, it's campy and cheesy. But that's what makes it good. Kristy Swanson stars as Buffy, she who must rid the world of the forces of darkness. She is guided by Merrick, her watcher, played by Donald Sutherland and a friend, Pike, played by Luke Perry. There are also appearances by the then up & coming David Arquette and Hilary Swank. When Buffy finds out her destiny as the Slayer, she must help Merrick slay a very powerful vampire, played by Rutger Hauer. Of course, chaos ensues, but Buffy saves the day in a final showdown worthy of all the one-liners shot out by Rutger and Kristy. Although the hit show created by Joss is superbly better, the movie still holds it own and will go down as a cult classic.

Long before the public was provided the television series: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," there was the film of the same name. Both are the brainchildren of writer/creator Joss Whedon, but Whedon has said that the film was NOT his vision of the story he had written. That is why he created the television series which, although at times humorous, is far more dark and serious than the film that started it all.

The film tells the story of valley girl cheerleader Buffy Summers and how she is led to the dubious career of vampire slaying. Buffy is head bimbo among the group of her vacuous friends in their high school. With little more than what the latest fashion trends are to toil her brain, Buffy is anything but concerned about anyone other than herself. Enter Donald Sutherland as Merrick, her soon to be Watcher (an individual who teaches slayers their craft). Merrick must not only convince Buffy that she is a slayer by birthrite, but also convince her that vampires exist no small feat.

The story is told in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Buffy, the film, never seems to engage the viewer to the action, as though the director didn't quite know how to present the subject matter. It's not that the film isn't watchable because it is it's just that it loses steam when it isn't funny and it is often funny. The valley girl schtick works well in this film.

The actors are up to the task and seem to have fun doing it.

Used as a reference for the television series, the film is surreal on an entirely different level. Watch it as a standalone and enjoy it. Don't try to compare it to the series.
