Jeff "JJ Star" Duran: How Embarrassing (2011)

Jeff 'JJ Star' Duran: How EmbarrassingAs a massive Bill Hicks geek, I've always found it somehow ill-fitting that people call him the 'Rock 'N' Roll comedian'. Yes he's dark & into his Rock, but it's like the sobroquet was stolen from another comic just to be pinned on him by others...

The good news is that J.J. Star *is* the original Rock 'N' Roll comedian! He is brash, loud, offensive & not in the least bit intellectual the perfect Rock 'N' Roll comic!

This Blu Ray consists of a 2008 performance in Orlando, Florida. Some of the references are a little dated although the experience of Jeff Duran in his prime is like no other comic.

Mr. Wrong (1996)

Mr. WrongGreat casting, well paced script, funny funny funny. A little wacky at times, but each actor commits to every line.

My favorite scenes:

-Ellen/Martha's reaction to Pullman/Whitman's poetry

-Pullman character's "reveal"

-Charades with Ellen, Plowright and Pullman

-Ellen sharing her good news with sister Hope Davis

-Pullman's big butt

One of my all time favorite movies, I've seen it several times and always enjoy it.

If you are a female, feel frustrated about not meeting a nice guy and can't figure out "why me" you have to see this one. I absolutely adore this movie. I am a product of the late 70's/early 80's and so many references in this movie were spot on. I think that this is absolutely the best movie that Joan Cussak has done and Bill Pullman really shows his comic acting ability. I was lucky enough to meet Bill Pullman personally, while working for a leading airlines, and he was a delight. He indicated that this was one of his favorite projects. Ellen is at a comic best, although knowing she does not date men, I had to try and put this out of my mind. I have seen it maybe 100 times and never tire of it. The soundtrack is fantastic to the movie. It really is genius. I know it is silly and some of it is a far stretch... However, there is so many truths. Flo (Polly ?) from the sitcom Alice plays her mother, and the actress who plays Bill Pullmans Mom is fantastic. It is really a great feel good movie, and just when you think that a guy is all together (wealthy and handsome) you realize it isn't always how it seems... Do yourself a favor and enjoy this one. It is great!

I adored this film. There are so many neurotic, obsessive men out there who can seem pretty wonderful when you first meet them -so MANY women have had some of the experiences in this film! I thought it was hysterical. I howled with laughter. Yes, it's a little over-the-top, but aren't most great comedies?

Sure, it might not be a significant influence on racial, moral, or family issues in our society. It won't help cure cancer, and probably won't save the world. But this movie's funnier than the thought of Bob Dole on Viagra. I love this movie. And think it's hilarious.

This is a silly movie and the reason that I write this review is to offset the unfavorable reviews of this film AND I LIKED IT. If you like movies such as Ruthless People and Big Business and 90's comedy, this is for you (even though it was done more recently).

Mr. Wrong is one of the coolest movies to just watch over and over and over and over again. I highly recommend getting together with your significant other and just enjoy the heck outta this flick. There is nothing brainy about it, it is not a drama, it delivers what is intended, PURE FUN! Come on, people!

Meet The Spartans - Pit Of Death Edition (2008)

Meet The Spartans - Pit Of Death EditionI'll have to admit, watching this movie the first time, there were some quick laughs, and it caught my attention. Sometimes, I feel the jokes were drawn out way too long, and that's a shame. If I were a 14 or 15 year old, I'd probably give this all 5 stars. This definitely isn't a movie in which you can watch over and over again. When you're bored, or strung out from the job, or the weekly grind is just too much and you want to let loose for a brief moment, go ahead. Otherwise, this movie is dime a dozen, in the ranks of The Comebacks, Epic Movie, etc etc etc.

Not only does this movie suck completely, it doesn't abide by the rules of how to make a good spoof at all. There was ONE scene where I laughed, and that was the "Ugly Betty" scene. Epic Movie was very poorly made, yet it had a few laugh-out-loud moments. Did I enjoy Date Movie at all? No. Neither did I enjoy this.

These are the rules of making a good spoof:

1. Be timely. A joke about Ellen in Mr. Wrong??????????

2. If trying to be offensive, be funny too. An accident-prone protagonist in Superhero Movie was funny, assaulting a Spartan kid with many heavyweight objects is not.

3. Widen your humor sources when cracking the odd joke. Go everywhere, don't stay on the same topic just with different words.

4. Be subtle when making a spoof. Not everything has to be uncalled for.

5. Don't go outside the genre you're spoofing. American Idol? Shrek? Casino Royale? Really??????

And lastly...

6. DON'T EXPLAIN EVERY SINGLE SOURCE MATERIAL AND RIFF. If you have to explain everything (Scary Movie 4 was brilliant because it only did this once), chances are it's not funny.

MTS doesn't do any of this, it just does the exact opposite. There's no plot (or so to speak), it's too unfunny to be a comedy, too spoofy to be a spoof, and overall, too unsubtle to be a comedy in the first place.

Unbearable.

All that needs to be said. Complete trash. I'm not sure at what point, pop-culture references became funny just by themselves. I guy dressed up like Sanjaya from American Idol pops out of nowhere and they kick him into a pit. Then the 3 person American Idol panel. Britney Spears and K-fed.

There's no setup. There's no nothing. If this is what has come of hollywood spoof comedies... I'm done... and now that we've seen a long string of these comedic failures pour out into the theatres and people actually pay for them... legitimizing them... we'll probably see more. It's a sad day in Hollywood.

Thousands of scripts are written every year that should be funded and produced before trash like this. When a supposed comedy does nothing but make this viewer angry... it's awful.

Everyone should be offended that cheap, brainless, here's a pop-culture reference and here's another type movies are being produced like MEET THE SPARTANS. We deserve better from people who are making millions hand over fist and can only come up with DATE MOVIE, EPIC MOVIE, LITTLE MAN, WHITE CHICKS and MEET THE SPARTANS.

In my 40 something years on this earth, and being a big fan and viewer of hundreds of comedies over the years, I honestly have to say this movie really, really sucks the big one!!! I did not even once come close to grinning at any point of this waste of film. I could not believe the level of crappiness this movie sunk to. The makers of this film, the actors, and whomever played a part in this movies production should be embarassed of themselves. Not even the slightest bit creative or funny in any way! I am just sorry I wasted time watching this piece of crap!

When parody movies (Epic Movie, Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie) started coming out, it was funny. Sure, these movies were cheesy, but way more enjoyable than this dreck.

This movie is littered with too many pop culture references. Rather than putting in real jokes and genuinely creative/funny situations, they chose to focus on making fun of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kobe, Britney Spears, Americsn Idol, and so on and so forth. Over ans over and over, especially with Paris Hilton. There were also a lot of product placements (ex. Subway sandwiches)

I unde4rstand this is a parody film and is not meant to be historically accurate. Which is just fine with me. But the pop references and product placement, along with some really stupid/gross/tasteless bits (like what the penguin did in Leonidas' mouth, or what the dog did to Leonidas in the James Bond scene) make for a movie that, instead of delivering good laughs, falls flat on its face due to being bogged down with all of these references instead of classic or real comedy bits and jokes. Many of the 'jokes' in this movie were also really milked and pushed too far, such as the scene where Leonidas pushes people into the pit. It was funny at first, but then he kept pushing more and more and MORE people into the pit and it just stopped being funny.

Just about the only thing I liked about this movie was Kevin Sorbo's appearance.
