Major League (Wild Thing Edition) (1989)

Major LeagueConsidered by many sports fans as "the greatest baseball" film that captures the excitement of America's past time, the 1989 sports comedy film "Major League" brought in over $50 million during its theatrical run.

The film which was written and directed by David S. Ward (writer for "The Sting" and "Sleepless in Seattle") was known for jumpstarting the careers of Wesley Snipes ("Blade", "U.S. Marshalls", etc.), Dennis Haybert ("24', "The Unit", etc.) and Rene Russo ("Lethal Weapn 3 and 4', "Get Shorty", etc.) but also trying to capture the realism of underdogs sports teams and even Charlie Sheen (who was a former high school baseball pitcher), an actor throwing actual pitches. And possibly breathing new life into the Cleveland Indians baseball team (which did very well during 1990's) and giving significance to the number #99 and also athletes utilizing the song "Wild Thing" as their theme song.

"Major League" is the ultimate sports film featuring a group of underdogs not expected do accomplish anything but in the process, becoming a team that has a chance of making it to the playoffs.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"MAJOR LEAGUE" is featured in 1080p High Definition. And is actually a very clean and vibrant transfer thanks to the fact that the film was remastered several years ago.

For a film that is 20-years-old, you realize how beautiful the actual picture quality is as colors pop, blacks are well done and although evident, minimal specks of dirt. Of course, as many films created back in the late 80's and mid 90's tend to have a softness to it, "Major League" also has that soft feel. But the amount of sharpness and color vibrancy makes this release much, much better than the 2007 "Wild Thing Edition" DVD release.

As for audio quality, audio is presented in English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD (also French and Spanish Mono). The film is primarily a dialogue-driven film and only until you get to the last half hour of the film, where the stadium is finally packed with people and Vaughn getting his "Wild Thing" introduction, do you finally see the sound being kicked up a notch.

Audio is front channel heavy, with some subwoofer usage during X's "Wild Thing" theme (even more pronounced on the menu selection). Rear surrounds featured a little stadium ambiance but nothing significant in terms of audio direction but overall, you hear things quite clearly.

Subtitles are featured in English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The "Major League: WILD THING EDITION" Blu-ray Disc release comes with everything that was included on the 2007 DVD and all are in Standard Definition. Included are:

* Commentary: Commentary by Writer/Director David S. Ward and producer Chris Chesser The commentary for "Major League" was quite interesting. Especially how David S. Ward wanted to reshoot scenes, for example, Wesley Snipes final scene and by the time he was done, he was black and blue from sliding a lot. Also, Ward and Chesser discussing the crowd scenes especially in the championship game, shooting long hours to the early morning (which Russo cried because she was forgetting her lines because it was so late) and how CG wasn't used at all, especially during Charlie Sheen's pitching and more. Discussion of how the ending had to be reshot because it didn't test as well in front of the audience. So ,they had to travel to London to have Margaret Whitton reshoot her scenes as Rachel Phelps. Also, how both men were almost speechless because they were enjoying the film. Overall, an informative and fun commentary.

* My Kinda Team Making Major League (23:10) Interviews with the Director, Producer and cast of "Major League". How the film continues to stay strong and how David S. Ward is a true baseball fan and how he modeled certain characters from a combination of a few baseball players and working with LA Dodgers Steve Yeager who put the cast through a 2 week baseball boot camp and more.

* A Major League Look at Major League (14:27) Interview with several Cleveland Indians baseball players and staff who discuss similarities or differences from the characters of "Major League" and people who actually play in the big leagues. Especially how one minor leaguer watches the film each day he is supposed to start pitching.

* Bob Uecker: Just A Bit Outside (12:43) A look at Bob Uecker the baseball player, the baseball announcer and being on the film. Featuring cast of "Major League", Cleveland Indians players and staff and interviews with Bob Uecker.

* Alternate Ending with Filmmaker Introduction (4:18) In the original screenplay and for the film, it was supposed to be revealed that the owner Rachel Phelps planned it all along and that she had to use the baseball players that they had because the team had no money. But because it was tested badly among fans who despised her character, they had to reshoot the whole scene with her character.

* A Tour of Cerrano's Locker (1:35) A short segment with the character of Pedro Cerrano showcasing his vodoo shrine in his locker.

* Photo Gallery Still photos from the film.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"Major League" still manages to have the enthusiasm as it did back in 1989 with sports fans in 2009. Many baseball players and even athletes talk about the film and how it ranks as one of their top sports films of all time and whenever its on television, they have to watch it.

It's an enjoyable film but it all comes down to what your preference is for a baseball film. Are you looking for inspirational and serious films such as "Field of Dreams" or do you want a sports comedy film such as "Major League". It's also an honest film that even professional baseball players and staff have said it has its relevance because many elements from the film actually happen in real life. From veterans assisting rookies, players having their daily rituals before a game, relievers in their own element and the feeling of sadness and excitement for a fan of one's baseball team.

Obviously, not all audiences enjoy sports films but for those who do, "Major League" definitely is quite fun and entertaining with its team of interesting to unusual characters but most of all, watching a group of people rising to the occasion as a team and most of all kicking some butt!

"Major League: WILD THING EDITION" is worth checking out!

No, you're not going to walk away from this movie thinking about how to achieve world peace or end poverty, but you will be walking away with a smile. MAJOR LEAGUE is a lighthearted, entertaining film that also happens to be hysterically funny. Throw the great sport of baseball into the mix and MAJOR LEAGUE is a win/win for those who love the game and those who just want to have a good laugh.

There's nothing complicated about the plot. When an aggressive femme fatale (Margaret Whitton) inherits the Cleveland Indians from her late husband, her plan is to put together a team so bad it will lose its fan base and allow her to relocate. And so a band of misfits is put together: washed-up players, inexperienced players, headcases. Of course, predictably, her plan goes awry, but it's still good fun watching the antics of the Indians as they misfire and then come together over a long, long season.

Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Rene Russo, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes headline a great cast. Bob Uecker is absolutely hysterical. My favorite character is manager Lou Brown (James Gammon) who delivers the film's funniest line, but one I dare not repeat here (it would never get past the editors)! Grab a hot dog and a beer, pull up a chair, and let MAJOR LEAGUE put a wide grin on your face.

It's not a deep drama and it won't make you ask you any tough questions of yourself, but Major League is pure entertainment from beginning to end. As such, it's my all-time favorite movie. It's easy to invest in the story (a Cleveland team made up of spare parts tries to overcome their owner's plot to move the franchise) even if it's been dated by the Indians' '90s success. The comedy doesn't pull any punches but still stays pretty tasteful, and I still find it laugh-out-loud funny even after 30+ viewings. The comedy is equal parts outstanding writing by David S. Ward and brilliant characterizations by the actors. James Gammon is dead-on as grizzled manager Lou Brown and Tom Berenger is actually sympathetic as journeyman catcher Jake Taylor. Dennis Haysbert and Corbin Bernsen give great performances, and Charlie Sheen is inimitable as Wild Thing Vaughn. I think any baseball fan will enjoy this movie, but fans of good comedy will probably like it, too.

The DVD has no special features (what else do you expect from Paramount?), but the picture and sound are good.

Movie: 6/5

DVD: 4/5

Overall: 5/5

I LOVE this film... since it's initial release, it has been one of my "guilty pleasure" VHS tapes. Now that the DVD has finally arrived after several years of waiting, I feel as though I've been taken. In the first place, this film is OBVIOUSLY CROPPED from the 4x3 format to make it look as though it's widescreen. This is NOT the theatrical "widescreen" release. Check out the opening scenes where the Indian's futility is told via a series of newspaper headlines of the times. Most of the headlines have the upper halves of the letters CHOPPED OFF! This is SHAMEFUL! The DVD's producers have actually given us LESS than the VHS tape. Second, there are NO, NONE, ZERO extras on this DVD. What exactly were we waiting all this time for?

Anybody out there who waited as I did for all this time for this DVD is in for a big letdown.

Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, Charlie Sheen, and Wesley Snipes star in this fun film about the woeful Cleveland Indians baseball team and how a group of misfits and castoffs came together to make the Indians pennant winners again.

Berenger stars as Jake Taylor, a former all-star catcher who has been toiling in the Mexican league. He gets a call from the Indians GM to come to spring training to be the team captain and help mentor the younger players. These players include Willie Mays Hayes (Wesley Snipes), a speedy outfielder who can only hit pop flys, Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen), a flame-throwing pitcher fresh out of the California penal league who possesses a blazing fastball but has no control, and Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), a hard-hitting Cuban who defected for religious freedom. He can crush fastballs, but nothing else. He also has a shrine in his locker with an idol named Jobu. Roger Dorn (Corbin Bernsen) is a high-priced third baseman who cares more about his investment portfolio than he does about baseball.

Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitten) has inherited the Indians after the death of her owner-husband. A former showgirl, she is determined to move the team to Miami, where she will cash in on several perks from the city. But to do this, the team's attendance must fall below a certain level. Determined to get what she wants, she begins taking things away from the team, such as whirlpools, and even their private plane. Soon the team is travelling to games by bus. However, the team has Lou Brown (James Gammon) as their manager. He is determined to make the Indians winners, regardless of what Rachel does.

The season starts off slowly for the team, and they are in their traditional last place position. But the GM lets Lou in on Rachel's scheme, and things begin to change. The players realize that the only option they have other than becoming free agents or being released is to win it all. And that's what they set out to do.

I'm a big baseball movie fan, and this movie is one of my all-time favorites. The story is excellent (being a Cubs fan, I'm glad the producers didn't pick them as their team to use), and the acting is tremendous. The choice of Bob Uecker as Indians announcer Harry Doyle was a stroke of genius. His announcing and one-liners really add a great dimension to the film. Rene Russo does a good job as Jake's on again, off again girlfriend Lynn Wells. Its fun to watch their ups and downs throughout the movie. There's even a take-off on the then-popular "do you know us?" American Express Card commercials.

I give this teriffic movie my highest recommendation. Watch and see how a bunch of no-names and has-beens bond together for one magical season to become winners.

National Lampoon's Vacation (2010)

National Lampoon's VacationThe picture may be only a bit better than the previous DVD releases...the sound is ridiculous and the 43 second intro from 2003...weak. I do agree that the cover art also sucks but I certainly don't care if the disc delivers the goods...this doesn't. Don't bother to upgrade from your normal DVD..its not!

Hands down, one of the best comedies of the 80's. Chevy was at his best and director Harold Ramis was on a role. (Caddyshack and Stripes.)

Many cuts and versions are out there but the truest I've seen, so far, is the anniversary edition. It's in widescreen (I've heard matted/cropped,not sure, but??), nice 5.1 mix, some decent special features but where are all those deleted scenes and the alternate ending?

Plus, a big [..] I have. "I'm so exited" was the song played when Christie Brinkley pulls along side Chevy(Clark Griswald) in the original. Why, still is "Little boy sweet" a song also by the Pointer Sisters used instead?? Both songs were used in the movie. The latter in the truckstop sceen where Chevy eats the pissed on sandwhich.

Is the copyright on that song that expensive to get it??

Dunno. Great movie. Lotta fun.

Best DVD of it yet. Agreed??

After all these years of waiting, I was very happy to see that Warner was finally going to give "National Lampoon's Vacation" the Special Edition DVD treatment I always felt it deserved. Now that it's finally here, I'm sorry to say that it isn't as "special" as I'd always hoped it would be.

Although this time the film IS presented in widescreen, it is the type of 1.85:1 ratio that actually crops off some of the picture from top and bottom that the old standard VHS version had. That is always annoying to be sure, but since the DVD shows the movie the way it truly appeared in theaters we can't really complain about that. You have to look at it this way: VHS was just showing MORE than was seen in the theater.

The special features leave much to be desired. The group commentary track with Director Harold Ramis, Producer Matty Simmons, Chevy Chase, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron and Randy Quaid was ok, but I've heard much better commentary on other films. With few exceptions, they really didn't say much that was very interesting or insightful, and there were several gaps during the film where no one seemed to say anything! And where was Beverly D'Angelo? I can't believe that she wouldn't have wanted to take part, especially since she appeared a few years ago on the TBS "Dinner & A Movie" with Paul and Annabelle to talk about the movie during commercial breaks with them!

The "Interactive Truckster Gallery" was pretty much a bore, with the exception of the section where stunt co-ordinator Dick Ziker talked about his jump in the desert for the crash scene. Dana Barron also offered an explanation why she only appeared in the first film in the gallery as well. The rest of it was not anything really noteworthy.

The new introduction to the film by Simmons, Chase and Quaid was just a short, silly little piece of nothing. The trailer is here, but I think the original DVD had it too so that isn't anything special. The other languages for audio are a nice touch. Try playing the scene where Clark had a temper tantrum in the car in French, Spanish or Portuguese for a laugh or two.

My big complaint is about the special features that were NOT present, such as deleted scenes. In the shooting script, there are several scenes that could have been presented here, including an alternate ending. The fact that Aunt Edna didn't really die, the Kamp Komfort clerk dressing up as a moose for the "wildlife fun" (see the photo during the end credits of him in the moose outfit), Clark fearing the police are chasing him after he "robbed the hotel" and stopped for gas (where he got the sandwiches he mentioned shortly before discovering Aunt Edna's "death") and the alternate ending would have been good to see, but no dice. No true "special edition" should be without a deleted scenes gallery!

My final complaint is the fact that the original soundtrack was not restored. Unlike the theater and original VHS versions, The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" was not present during the highway Ferrari scenes. Similar to the version now shown on cable and the first DVD, "Little Boy Sweet" replaces it. What makes that even more annoying is the fact that the end credits were NEVER changed. "I'm So Excited" is still listed as appearing in ALL cable and home video releases. That is almost like adding insult to injury. Why not restore the original soundtrack for the 20th anniversary?

In summary, I give this DVD 3 stars, just middle ground. It's an improvement over the first one, but definitely not all that it could be. Die-hard fans of the movie might want to pick it up, since there might not be any better releases for the 25th or any other anniversary. If your opinion is that you can take it or leave it, I would advise you to just pay a couple of bucks to rent it and save the rest of your money for something better.

NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION still stands up as one of the funniest road movies ever made. With a canny script and dead-on performances from the superb ensemble cast, it serves as a cautionary tale for families everywhere how NOT to have the family vacation from hell.

Clark and Ellen Griswold (Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo) and their two children (Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall) embark on a huge, life-consuming odyssey, otherwise known as the cross-country trip to Walley World in California.

Along the way, they have to contend with a trip to their hillbilly cousins Eddie and Catherine (Randy Quaid and Miriam Flynn) and end up dragging crochety old Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca) along for the ride through Phoenix. Adding insult to injury is the shapely blonde in the red Ferrari (Christie Brinkley) who is following Clark "all the way"...

Hilarious all the way. It is indeed painful to watch the hapless Clark fumble his way (Basil Fawlty-style) through the series of disasters that befall him on his vacation.

The DVD transfer is wonderful after years of...fuzzed-out video transfers.

Great movie that still holds up today. Chevy Chase and Anthony Michael Hall make the film with superb performances. As far as the DVD, don't buy this thinking you are 'upgrading' your collection to DVD because the quality is just not there. The disc picture quality is NO better than the VHS and is still pan-n-scan. I did a side by side and I think I almost prefer the VHS picture over the DVD, seems to be clearer. The sound is in MONO, which really takes away from the viewing enjoyment. The only reason to upgrade to DVD on thid one would be for the theatrical trailer or convience of chapter search. There also are a few cast bios but nothing more. I'm almost positive that Criterion or someone will re-release this as a special edition SOMEDAY, as this is a really disgraceful handling of an American Treasure.

Cougars, Inc. (2011)

Cougars, Inc.One can only wonder what, first time writer, director and producer,K.Asher Levin was trying to get across to his viewing audience. I'm still trying to decide what storyline he was sttempting for the audience to understand much less follow, for a first time director,he won't be mistaken for a Steven Spielberg, out the gate,he decides to tell his story by the use of paper

inserts, that let the audience know what the next scene will be. Poor decision,Mr.Levin,if I can't follow the story your attempting to convey, don't insult me by using some other type of means, learn your craft before decide to direct a film!

Hopefully,Mr. Levin this was a learning experience for you or maybe your better suited to be a producer and possible a writer,

I have to at least give you credit for putting together a good cast of actors, even if I do feel the best acting was done by

James Belushi in this film, for a seasoned television actress, the like's of Kathryn Morris(Cold Case)just did not come across,as believable character, had there not been the insert & bar scene, which by the way,I've know a few bartender's and not one of them would have served acohol to a 17 year old,the part played by Kyle Gallner(Veronica Mars)which led to the first sex scene between him and Kathryn Morris. There again, not a believable scene,as a matter of fact, non of this movie seemed to make sense. I have to assume that the director's intent was left on the cutting room floor, its the main reason for giving this film, a one star,I could have possible giving it a two & 1/2 star for the actors that were part of the film,Denise Richards along with Sarah Hyland, the other notable characters were the sons of James Belushi & Eddie Murphy.

Don't waste your time or money on purchasing the this DVD or Blu-Ray edition,it was a disappointment, the actors in this film are more talented than this and they certainly couldn't have done it for the paycheck they received!

If you can get passed the idea that women who are as hot as Denise Richards needs someone to set them up with young boys for sex, you might enjoy the film... and oh yes, she is willing to pay for it too. Kyle Gallner plays Sam, a high school boy whose mom was a former playmate. He is a self describe victim of circumstance as he has been kicked out of multiple boarding schools. He finally finds one where it seems he can finish his education only to find out that the money has run out. He goes to a bar and meets Alison (Kathyrn Morris) whose husband cheats on her. He flatters her and the next thing you know they are in a motel room. The next day she leaves a note and a check. He mentions this to his new friends who suggest they start a "risky business" as teen boys for cougars.

The guys go on-line to meet more cougars in need and bring in more boys for a business that lasts for about a music montage. Sam has met a girl his own age and wants to end his relationship with "Mrs. Robinson."

Jim Belushi plays the overly cool school master who says, "Woman: What do you need to know about them? You tell the good looking ones they're smart and the smart ones they're good looking."

Sex, nudity (not Denise Richards), and Denise Richards' potty mouth.

Buy Cougars, Inc. (2011) Now

I really liked this movie except that Sam chose to be with immature but sexually active Courtney (Sarah Hyland, "Modern Family"), who is around his age. He did have "good" times with beautiful and irresistible Alison (Kathryn Morris, "Cold Case"). Seeing the other teen males with older women (Denise Richards as Judy and other women unknown) was a turn-on for me.

If only the same thing happened to me when I was a teenager...

I thought the film was great! I gave it five stars despite the fact that the characters could have been more developed, I thought the acting made up for it! The acting was superb! Denise Richards is amazing! For those reviewers that gave it a bad review they're taking life way too serious. I also love the fact that Eddie Murphy's son makes his freshman debut in this film!! He does a subperb job, pleasantly reminiscent of his dad!!! Especially, the makeout scene! Hilarious!!! This is not meant to be a thought provoking film with depth as in Dead Poet's Society. It's fun, funny, and superficial while making no apologies for it!!! As a matter of fact the lead character makes that clear at the outset!! This will truly be a cultural, cult film in years to come as the term "Cougar" is forever etched into America's subcubtural history!! :0)))

Magic Mike (Movie Only + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) (2012)

Magic MikeThis movie is AWFUL. Seriously, just bad. I saw it in the theater AND I pre-ordered the DVD/BluRay/Ultraviolet combo. So why would I want to own a movie I already knew was bad? Can you say Channing Tatum bumping and grinding on the dance floor? Channing Tatum is at his luscious best in this film as far as his dancing and body, but it's like he totally forgot how to act at all (not that he was Oscar material before this anyway). The dancing in this movie is excellent and SO.HOT. and Matthew McConaughey is awesome when he's used for comic relief (when it gets serious even the great McConaughey is pretty bad). The plot and even most of the acting in this movie is just downright pitiful.

Would I own the movie? YEP, I DO. Would I watch the movie more than once? Yep, I have. Would I say it's cinematic magic worthy of an Oscar? NO WAY. Do I recommend this movie to pretty much all women who might kind of like the look of Channing Tatum? Absolutely. Do I recommend this movie if you are looking for a decent plot and good acting? No, no, I don't, please stay far away from this movie if that is what you are looking for!

The dancing and serious babe factor of this movie gets 10 stars, everything else gets -7...makes this one an even 3 stars for me.

I first saw this movie trailer when I saw Haywire. I did not really know who Channing Tatum was(dumb me), let alone he was in Haywire. I thought a male stripper movie. I have seen my share of male strippers and if it was going to be like watching the Chippendales, I thought how boring. Well it came out and it was going strong at the theater in July so what the hell, I went and saw it. All I can say is WOW it was raining men and and hot bods and man candy. Definitely not boring. Channing Tatum can definitely move and the dance in the red thong is Oh My God. We women finally get something decent to look at, after all the years of enduring movies where chicks get naked and the guys are drooling. So the guys get to suck it up. Seeing Channing Tatum's naked rear-end and just about everything else, makes your mouth drop open. He is drop dead gorgeous and sexy as hell and the rest are not bad on the eyes either. Joe Mangianello from True Blood is holy crap hot too. It was a pretty decent story too, not just stripping. I love the strip to KISS's Dr. Love. That was a topper for me. I highly recommend this movie to every red-blooded female out there. When Channing Tatum goes dressed as a cop to strip for the college girls it makes you want to do bad things to get arrested by him. I don't know why anybody should be surprised that this movie has done well, any woman with working eyes has seen it and probably more than once. It is still in the theaters around my home town as this is written. If it was just a dumb stripper movie, in my opinion, it would have been gone by July 1st, not spend 3 months in the theater. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

Shame on you Amazon, for deliberately misleading the public. Since I saw the film, I would not have purchased this DVD, but wanted to see the dance footage that Soderberg did not include in the film. I don't own a BLU RAY DVD player, by the way and can't afford one. I'm certainly disappointed that the Distribution Company distributed this product in this way.

Channing Tatum stars in this drama following his character Mike and The Kid, a guy Mike befriends played by Alex Pettyfer. Mike decides to mentor The Kid and it shows how the lifestyle quickly takes over Kid while Mike is trying to leave the lifestyle. Steven Soderbergh directed from a script by Reid Carolin, whose screenplay was inspired by Tatum's work as a stripper before he made it in Hollywood. Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Cody Horn, and Olivia Munn co-star.

This movie defintely does not live up to the hype!! Very disappointed, there was no plot and a lot of the storylines didn't make sense or fit with the movie. What was the point of the relationship between Mike and Joanna? The drug storyline? There is a LOT of eye candy in this movie and it almost makes up for how bad it really is! Alex Pettyfer's character, The Kid really acted like a kid, he was sulking, pouting, or making bad decisions throughout the movie!

The only good thing about this movie was Channing Tatum, he is a really talented dancer who can act, he just needs the right material. The scene where he danced to the song Pony was HOT!!!! Wait until this one comes out on cable!!

Mark October 23rd on your calendars as that is the day "Magic Mike" (the box office sensation during the summer of 2012) comes to DVD and Blu Ray.

"Magic Mike" stars hunky Channing Tatum (in probably his best role to date) as a male stripper who decides after years of stripping for women as a sideline job that he has had enough.

When Mike (Tatum) befriends a young 19 year old named Adam at the beginning of the film Mike gets Adam into the stripping business only to discover that Adam gets involved with drugs which leads to many problems for the two. Mike then decides he wants to lead a "normal" life, have a relationship with a woman and settle down.

The movie is loosely based on Channing's own real-life as a 19 year old stripper in Florida.

Gay men and females will LOVE the film as not only does it show off Channing's back side (and I am not talking about his back), but the dance numbers, music and story are very strong and believable.

Other studs in the movie include Matt Bomer from television's "White Collar", Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey.

The movie was an enormous box office hit becoming the runaway hit at theatres during the summer of 2012 making over $155,000,000 at the U.S. box office alone on a $7,000,000 budget!!!

The special bonus features will include extended dance sequences, a featurette that contains Channing Tatum being interviewed on what it was like to get his fellow actors into the mold as male strippers and much more!

In July, 2012 Channing announced that the studio and he (as one of the producers) are indeed working on a sequel as the film was an enormous successs.

Return of the Living Dead (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in DVD Packaging) (1985)

Return of the Living DeadBefore we start. I want to affirm that I love this film. Great script, great performances, great soundtrack, great directing.

Also, regardless of the negative feedback I give this DVD, we are unfortunately obligated to buy it, if we ever want to see a special edition DVD.

Ok, here goes. Yeah it looks great. But it just felt wrong. I couldn't place the reason. I thought maybe it was a visual matter. But I quickly realized that what was bugging me was the soundtrack. It was inexplicably, utterly mangled.

Will someone tell me why? Why were the vocals for whole songs removed? I am sorely disappointed and angered by this. I am outraged by the George Lucas style of re-working your film for DVD, and abandoning the original theatrical cut. If you feel the need to improve your film, fine, provide an alternate cut, or additional scenes, or whatever, that's great. Give me the option on the menu to see the "improved version, or the regular cut. But don't alter a classic, and not even mention it and try to pass it off as the original.

There are so many examples of this butchering, that I can't name them all. I only watched it once last night, and am at work now, but a few definitely come to mind.

#1 The scene where Trash and Suicide and the gang are speeding towards the cemetery used to have the Damned song Dead Beat Dance as the background music. Well, not anymore! You get the inital maniacal laugh, and then nothing, a completely different song. Why?!

#2 The scene where the zombie says: "send more cops", with a thick new york accent. A classic scene right? We all loved it right? Well did you notice that they changed the voice? Did you notice that is was awful in comparison, and not nearly as funny? Was there a good reason for this sacrilege? Has Dan O'Bannon lost his mind, or was this the studios fault? In the end credits, where the best-of scenes replay a second time, we hear the "send more cops" line in all its original glory. So I know I am not imagining this.

#3 What's his name, the Pathmark guy (no slight intended, his performance was excellent), takes his own life by placing himself in the crematorium. In the original version of this scene is accompanied by the song Burn the Flames, which sports a haunting guitar solo at the exact moment the door shuts and we hear the man's tortured screams. It is actually one of my favorite scenes in the film. The haunting music enhances the sadness of the moment.

But not anymore. Now the music is faded out in a particularly unartistic way, and the scene plays silent. Sorry but this is a disgrace. I waited years for this film to be re-released and I feel betrayed. The soundtrack was perfect the way it was. In a different film it would not be as a big of a deal. But when you are the ONLY zombie/comedy/horror film with a punky soundtrack, and a damned good one, and everyone loves you for it, you don't go around meddling and altering, deleting and rewriting, compiling and defiling.

It go to the point where I held my breath with every song change, worried sick that they would ommit lyrics or do away with the track altogether. Waves of relief washed over me when I reached the scene where the zombies are attacking the funeral home (and our heroes are furiously nailing doors and windows shut)and I discovered that the Cramps song "Surfin Dead" was left intact. Thank god, or the devil, for that one.

Could I be wrong? Did I miss some sort of soundtrack feature, where mistakenly clicked something off or on? Or is the sad fact that this movie has been permanently altered...?

After over a decade of being out of print (do to legal wrangling in regards to the film's punk rock soundtrack that is prominently featured throughout the film) the classic 1980s zombie film that turned heads with it's dark humor, witty script, and original zombie design is now available on DVD!

Freddy is a typical early 1980s punk rock fan who, on his first day at work at UNEEDA Medical Supply, learns that the movie "Night of the Living Dead" was based on an actual event involving zombies and that UNEEDA one day came into possession of one of the zombies which is now being held in a cylinder in the basement. A non-believing Freddy is shown the container just as it explodes, filling the supply company's building with a toxic green gas. The gas causes the sole human body in the body to come to life (as well as freeing the zombie from it's cylinder prison) and after failing to destroy the zombie the tradition way (cutting of it's head) they take it to the local crematorium to be cremated. Unfortunately this makes things MUCH, MUCH worse as the smoke laced with the toxic chemical mixes with storm clouds that rain down on the city at night and resurrecting the bodies buried inside the town's cemetary where ironically Freddy's fellow punk-friends are having a little party.

The kicker for Return of the Living Dead that makes it a classic film and makes it one of the most well loved zombie movies is the fact that the film's zombies aren't your typical movie zombie. They are smart (luring police to the crematorium after killing off several cops who come to investigate all of the strange activity going on), are fast and agressive instead of slow and dumb and the zombies have the most hilarious banter involving their thirst for brains that can have even the most squeemish movie viewer laughing.

Featuring a great punk rock sound-track and a great mix of humor and violence, this film has sadly been out of circulation for over a decade do to the it's punk soundtrack. Now it's back on the market on DVD. This is a must buy DVD for any true horror fan....

Re-animated corpses, swearing, blood & gore, full-frontal female nudity, iconoclastic jabs at American culture, and lots of gallows humor--what more could a horror fan ask for?

Any genre fan who has a morbid sense of humor is sure to enjoy 1985's THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. In the same vein as other tongue-in-cheek horror shtick such as the Chiodo Brothers' KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE and Sam Raimi's ARMY OF DARKNESS, this one's specifically a spoof of George Romero's classic and highly revered zombie film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Director/Screenwriter Dan O'Bannon, probably best known for having penned the original ALIEN movie, does a fantastic job of lovingly poking fun at the Horror and SF genres while at the same time satirizing everything from the U.S. Military to Punk Rock. This movie is not only funny, it's got plenty o' "brains"!

And you can't beat the financial value of the DVD edition. Not only does it cost less than a lot of other full-length, widescreen DVD thrillers--including some that are hardly worth the plastic and aluminum it took to make 'em--but it also includes these cool extras: an optional audio commentary by O'Bannon and production designer William Stout; both the G-rated and R-rated theatrical trailers; over 5-minutes of various TV spots; some storyboard-like production stills; and a really cool "Designing the Dead" featurette, in which O'Bannon and Stout discuss the evolution of the final look and feel of the movie (lots of great shots of Stout's EC-Comics-like designs for the zombies offered in this one).

"How was your day, dear?" "Usual, crap." I love that line. This is my absolute favorite movie of all time and I am extatic to hear that is finally coming out on DVD. The reason why I love it so much...couldn't tell ya. It's just one of those movies that keep you forever. I loved it. It's a unique zombie flick. With the portrayal of younger adolescents, I think it gives the movie a certain edge that no other zombie, or any other horror film for that matter, has ever had. Past, present and I will boldy say future. With combinations of laughs, scares, and gore, it surpasses every horror movie ever made. The character of Suicide and Trash are my two favorites. Unfortuanately for me, they are the first two to be devoured by brain starved zombies. But I always looked at it this way, Trash got what she wanted..."A bunch of old men to surround me. And start bighting, and eating me alive." I see. Trust me, if you are an avid horror fanatic like myself and love zombie films, check this one out! And if you are in to Punk music at all, the soundtrack for the movie rocks. With bands like The Cramps, The Damned, The Flesheaters, and TSOL, you'll be in pure heaven...Or hell. Whichever you prefer! I give this movie 2 THUMBS UP...and one half eaten brain!!!

This cut of the film sucks: The soundtrack has been reedited and remixed. Its not the same as the version we grew up with. The songs have been edited. Most notably the creepy song "Burn the Flames" played when

James Karen cremates himself has been almost totally removed. This stinks.

7 Steps to Make a Comedy Movie

Have you ever wanted to make a good, comedy movie? Don't know where to start? Look no further.

Steps
  1. Plan it out. It's best to plan it out and think of the jokes that you can change some of the stuff in and out. But, for now just try to write a script and get the cast to help you make it up as you go on if you want.
  2. Make good, realistic jokes. After a while all of your Superman jokes will get old.
  3. Start to record with whatever you Have. Even a webcam works. Digital Cameras help a lot, because they are already in format and are a easy transfer to your computer.
  4. Try to have music that fits with your scene, it wouldn't make sense to have a sappy love song with a funny fight scene.
  5. Use editor programs like Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, etc. to remove extra scenes that you don't need. But don't delete them. If your video is a big success you'll want to add bonus features such as deleted scenes, or how scenes were made.
  6. Get a company to review your movie and hope it is a big success.
  7. Finally save the movie and store it somewhere or put it on a DVD. You can now upload it to youtube, dailymotion, etc. OR you can watch it with friends
