Rites of Passage (2011)

Rites of Passagewhen I first started watching it I thought that it was kinda stupid. I watched the whole thing and was not impressed. Now I gac=ve it a second chance and i'm glad that I did. it turned out to be a good movie. I am glad I purchased it.

Benny (Wes Bentley) and Nathan (Ryan Donowho) are brothers who live on the Anderson Ranch which boasts some Indian burial grounds. Benny has a friend , Delgado (Christian Slater) who stays there and manufactures drugs. Both Delgado and Benny made a powerful hallucinogen from the root of gypsum. Benny does things under the influence of the drug he doesn't remember, regrets and can't fix.

Nathan invites the anthropology class out to the ranch while a bunch of crazy stuff is going on. Soon they all drink the Gypsum tea and all hell breaks loose.

The movie has some humorous moments, but is far from a comedy.

F-bomb, sex, no nudity but a lot of bikini/bra and panties stuff, derogatory toward Christianity in the beach scene. 3 1/2 stars

"Grandmother Malloy I've come to beg for your roots. I promise to do you no harm. I need to borrow your magic for tonight." After an anthropology student decides to take a few of his classmates to a family ranch in order to do a mock ritual for extra credit they get more then they expect. His brother seeing this as a chance to get revenge for his family decides to make the ritual a real thing. So going in I was thinking this was going to be decent. While I was not totally wrong it could have been way better. The beginning was actually pretty entertaining and a little funny. The longer it went on though the more it started to drag and I was just interested enough to want to find out what happened. What started off as an interesting idea devolved into the kids in an abandoned area start getting killed off one by one type movie. While this is not a terrible movie this is still just OK. Overall, a fun and entertaining beginning gives way to a formulaic ending that isn't as fun. I give it a C+.

This film was cool, funny and freaky. Slater and Wes Bently give whacky yet creepy performances that could make this a potential cult classic. When the action gets going, it doesn't stop. The beginning is pretty funny too! A solid blend of fun and scares.

I loved the mix of blood and humor here. It took a routine premise of kids in a cabin and had a lot of fun with it. But also had some interesting unique character developments that you don't normally find in a story like this.

Miss Congeniality / Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (Comedy Double Feature) (2010)

Miss Congeniality / Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and FabulousSandra Bullock's Grace Hart is one of the best character's she ever created. This semi tough FBI agent with a heart of gold is very well expressed in these both Miss Congeniality films.

William Shatner is rediscovered and restarted in these films as the had been (Bert Parks like) MC . He acts the straight man for the humor around him and it works.

In the first film, Hart is sent in to the Miss USA beauty contest to protect the other gitl's and save the day. Benjamin Bratt plays her FBI partner. Micheal Caine is the groomer who makes her from FBI agent to Beauty Queen> Candice Bergan is the show organizer. (Boston Legal fans note, this film was FIRST!)

The second film, Grace who has become an FBI press darling, because everyone knows her from the USA contest and she can not go undercover. She has written a book and goes on press tours showcasing the NEW FBI. She is saddled with a partner who does not like her and comedy tensions ensue. Miss USA and the show's MC is kidnapped and Grace is on the case

Dont expect these films to be like the POLICE ACADEMY films, but dont expect to be great Oscar film making either...its good set of films to enjoy for just the laughes

Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD

These movies are both very guilty pleasures of mine and always have been ever since they came out. I have to admit that I wasn't really expecting it to have the greatest picture quality, but since I got a great deal I thought I'd give it a go. I was wrong, the movie looked a lot better on blu-ray than I expected. Sure it's not the best looking one out there, but it's definitely worth getting.

I have to admit, normally buying Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2 on blu-ray would not have been something I would do. However, getting both together on the same disc for $10? I couldn't refuse!! I absolutely adore Miss Bullock as an actress and think she did an absolutely wonderful job portraying this character. The blu-ray transfer was great and the picture was mah-val-us!! : )

Adorable movies, beautiful/wonderful actress, under $10, perfect picture, How can you go wrong?

Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007)

Mr. Bean's HolidayThe movie:

Some chuckle moments, but not Bean at his finest. Picture quality is a lot better than the DVD counterpart, but sadly one of the funniest parts has been omitted from this UK release. For some reason the laptop scene at the beginning is cut, which is a shame because this is a classic Bean moment and I can think of several scenes I would have rather chopped before this. I suspect the over officious BBFC has a part to play here.

The Disc:

Presentation is as bare bones as it gets with the same extras as the DVD. The laptop scene can be once again be viewed in wonderful standard definition as part of the deleted scenes segment albeit minus the fight on the platform.

This is a region free disc and so I recommend looking at the Amazon.UK website as it's considerably cheaper.

This movie is far better than the first Mr. Bean movie. The plot is funnier and the characters, even Mr. Bean, are more sympathetic. And Willem Dafoe's appearance as an egotistical movie star is priceless.

Bernie (2011)

BernieLet me state upfront that I knew literally next to nothing about the movie's plot when I went to see it recently at my indie-movie theatre here in Cincinnati. I had heard good things about it, and that was good enough for me to check it out. Well, I was in for quite a surprise.

"Bernie" (95 min.) brings the story of Bernie Tiede (played by Jack Black) as a funeral director (excuse me, "assistant" funeral director) in Carthage, TX. Bernie is the most likeable guy you'll ever meet. He is involved in the community like no-one else before, and the small town just things the world of him. At one of the funerals, Bernie meets widow Marjorie Nugent (played by Shirley McLaine), and they strike a friendship. Marjorie is viewed by everyone as a b*tch, but the two of them get along just great. Things take a turn for the worse as Marjorie becomes more and more possesive of Bernie, and it all builds up to a confrontation between the two, and Bernie shoots her. I won't tell more of the plot, so that you can experience for yourself what happens after that. Several comments: I didn't realize until the credits rolled that (i) this is based on true mid-90s events in Carthage, and (ii) the movie intersects with interviews from people from Carthage, which it turned out are not actors but the actual folks from Chartage who witnessed the whole thing.

I must mention the excellent work from Jack Black as Bernie (has he ever been better than in this movie?), but even more so the eye-popping performance by Shirley McLaine as Marjorie, which really blew me away. Matthew McConaughey certainly deserves an honorable mention in his role as the local District Attorney, MILES away from his usual stuff. In all, I cannot emphasize enough how pleasantly surprised I was by this movie, it just flashed by in no time, and kept my interest throughout. "Bernie" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Bernie is the new masterpiece by Richard Linklater. The fact that he could turn such a difficult premise to such a successful black comedy/drama is remarkable. This may be one of the greatest works on small-town America in this decade. Though Bernie may not have the breadth of a work like Fargo, it does magic in how it tells its story.

Really, the most fascinating thing about Bernie is the way the story is told. Rather than give us a linear story, Bernie story is mostly retold by the residents of Carthage, TX who were witnessed to the gruesome events that occurred in this innocent town. This style can backfire gloriously if these characters are too animated, but Linklater strikes the right tone. With a Texan accent and some Southern innocence, these characters all suit the benefits the main story line. He seamlessly alternates between the world of the main characters and residents. This is very competent screenwriting as Linklater only uses his main characters when they are necessary, and allows the residents of Carthage to do the main storytelling. This is a welcome retreat from heavy-set narration of many Hollywood movies, especially some master filmmakers like Woody Allen.

The movie is amazing because it centers on a murder that is hard to condemn like a CSI episode and the intent not dissimilar to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. What makes the crime difficult to assess is that most of what the audience knows from Bernie is from the residents of Carthage, TX. We do not know Bernie as well as they do, and have to assume that their judgments are sound and not simplistic or based on a façade generated by Bernie himself. The film has been the subject of controversy by the way it portrays the murder, but if it were completely accurate to the conditions of the crime, the audience would not have such ambiguous feelings about the crime committed. In that case, Bernie would become another lunatic who murdered an innocent. What Linklater does is much more than that.

This is a great movie! We (people who know Bernie and or lived in Carthage) thought that there was no way that a movie could be made about a murder and be funny....But with the cast and the bizarre "this can't be true" storyline, it blew me away. I am going to see it in Carthage on Sunday with my mom and her sister, my aunt, who is in the movie. If you are a Jack Black fan...then this is a "must see".

I wish I'd known nothing about this film when I sat down to watch it. Unfortunately, nearly every review gives away a key detail of the plot -usually in the first sentence -and so although the movie wasn't ruined (hardly), I know that it lacked as much impact as it could have provided. I know this because I watched it with two people from whom I had deliberately withheld the key detail, and their response to the film -although just as deeply pleased as mine -had a far sharper edge of interest. They had been waiting to see what might happen. I was waiting for what I knew would happen.

If this is the only review of the film you read, then read none others, because you should go in fresh. I will tell you this much: the film is a cross between a mockumentary and an homage to the true tale of a personable mortician/funeral director named Bernie. A Methodist with a tender voice and a precise sort of careful charm, Bernie's affable and off-beat ways woo most of the citizens of the town of Carthage, Texas, including its most notable curmudgeon, an older woman named Marjorie Nugent, known as much for her wealth as for her sweet-as-a-porcupine demeanor. The unlikely friendship that blossoms between those two -as well as its ultimate dissolution and effect on the town -provides the heart of this absorbing, beautifully acted crime drama/dark comedy.

The movie's action is interspersed with interviews from citizens of the town, all of whom are so rich in character and colloquialisms that my friends and I could not decide if they were actors or the real deal. It turns out that they are, indeed, real citizens from the town, people who really knew Bernie, and this just adds to the film's sweetly sad charm. Driving the whole thing, however, is the seamlessly stunning performance of Jack Black, who inhabits the titular character with a quietly accomplished gravitas. One part funny, one part dark, and two parts grim philosophical inquiry, this movie resonates on enough levels to belie its own rich veins of humor and pathos. There are a lot of reasons to watch this film, the biggest one being that it's just that good.

Before Bernie,I have never been a fan of the over the top performances of Jack Black. I would not have gone to see the movie had it not been a true story from my part of the country. I highly suggest you do a little research before you see it. Jack Black should win an Academy Award for his performance. Can't wait to get my dvd and watch it again! Don't miss Bernie!

Disorganized Crime (1989)

Disorganized CrimeThere is no way you cannot enjoy this movie, the actors are all absolutely hillarious. (Ruban Blades is by far the best) What, at first, looks like just another run-of-the-mill crime caper, turns into a complicated action-comedy that doesn't have one unlikeable character. (Ed o'neil is also one of the best Characters)

DISORGANIZED CRIME is a movie equivalent to a tv crime comedy. It's all ensemble acting with no one person stealing all of the scenes. All of the actors are very good as different criminal talents put together to execute a perfect crime in a small town. There is just one small problem; the mastermind for all of the other criminals is arrested and cannot put all of the various pieces togrther. The rest of the movie is about the mastermind escaping two funny but incompetent lawman while the leaderless henchmen try to do the job by themselves. Both parts of the movie work well and the ending is funny, ironic, and surprising.

It cost only 10$. But it's worth 3 times that. I saw this ages ago (just after it came out) and always loved it, so I had to have it for my collection. I dig movies about bumbling thieves too, but these guys aren't the bumbling kind. And besides, the Bank Vault with all that money may motivate the characters in the film, but ultimately it's not about that. Rubén Blades is just so superb in this. His behaviour always provokes fits of laughter. All the actors play off each other so well, whether it's the late Fred Gwynne, Young Guns' Lou Diamond Phillips, or Ed O'Neill from TV's Married With Children. I really can't recommend this more. It doesn't play like the usual caper, because the humour isn't necessarily in great jokes or great physical stunts or the like. The laughs come from the dynamics between the characters their interaction and communication with one another; it's in how they say things, their facial expressions. Subtleties. And all this from actors who don't earn 20 million per picture. Plus, you know, it cost only 10$!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2012)

Seeking a Friend for the End of the WorldEarlier this year there was "Melancholia", the ambitious and at times entertaining but also pretentious take on "the end of the world" as envisioned by director Lars von Trier, and now we get a completely different perspective on the very same topic, as written and directed by Lorene Scafaria.

"Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" (95 min.) starts off brilliantily. In the first minute of the movie we see Dodge (played by Steve Carell) and his wife sitting in the car, listening to the radio announcement that asteroid 'Matilda' cannot be stopped and will hit earth in 3 weeks, ending life as we know it. Dodge's wife looks at him, and then leaves the car, literally running away from him. What a beginning! Dodge eventually meets Penny (played by Kiera Knightley), and regardless of their age difference, they strike a friendship. Dodge and Penny hit the road, among others to look up Dodge's HS sweetheart and to find a plane for penny so she can rejoin her family in England. I don't want to give away much more of the plot, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out, but let's just say things don't pan out exactly as Dodge and Penny thought they would.

This is an outstanding movie from start to finish. In the midst of all the numbing summer blockbusters that Hollywood unleaches upon us, here's actually a movie that actually speaks to me. At times I laughed, at times I teared up, and the movie went by in the blink of an eye. I don't know that Steve Carell has ever been better than here, playing the "Joe Six-Pack" average guy with even more restraint (and that's a compliment). Kudos also to Kiera Kightley. Likewise for the oustanding soundtrack (I may never listen to the Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" in the same way again). But the ultimate credit must go to writer-director Lorene Scafaria, making her directing debut here. Can't wait to see what she will do next. Meanwhile, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" is HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The trend for today's movies is to reveal the entire plot from start to finish including all the best lines compressed into a 2 minute 30 second trailer. The trailer for this film is awesome fast paced, great music track (we're on a road to nowhere), and really funny. Well all of that stuff happens in about the first 20 minutes of the film. Then this focus/Indian paintbrush film settles into an examination of two questions: What if you found out you had 21 days to live? Along with the rest of humankind?

The basic plot of this movie is: man with long history of woman problems gives up on romance after his wife leaves him and he finds out the world is coming to an end, people try unsuccessfully to set him up, he meets a much younger female neighbor who has a sleep disorder and awful judgment in men, they pick up a dog and go on a road trip each on a quest for that one last thing they want to do in this life. And they get to really know each other along the way.

It is at times serious and contemplative and other times shifts to gallows humor. The exterior world which starts out with crowds and rioting fades away as the film progresses to focus solely on one man and one woman. The relationship that builds over the course of the movie between the main characters, Dodge and Penny, along with the dog they pick up along the way dubbed Sorry, is sweet and believable.

If you like Steve Carell's brand of humor or films that cut past the BS and examine the stuff that matters, give this one a try.

As soon as I saw the title for this movie, I knew it was going to be a great film. It's really an exploration of Existentialism. Whether we die from a meteor crashing into the Earth or we live out our lives in peace and good health we all must eventually die. So this film is really the sped-up version of the important responsible decisions and acts of genuine authenticity that we have to face in our lives.

There's two things you'll find interesting in this film. One is how others around the central characters deal with their imminent demise. There's nihilistic hedonism. There's people who simply cannot process what's happening and just carry on with their now meaningless lives (that is, acting in "bad faith"). There's the anti-humanist, devout believer who's content in their prison cell satisfied that the world is finally coming to an end. There's people who commit shocking suicides, and those that hire someone else to put them out of their misery. It's not exactly a comedy. Like Dodge's friend's wife tells him, "You're not getting out of this one."

The second thing that you'll find interesting is how Dodge finds a type of "salvation" inside all this doom. And I won't spoil that for you, but I'll just say that it's going to require an active, authentic decision on his part about how he wants to spend his last moments.

Also, thank-you so much to the film's writer(s) for not chickening out and giving this movie a fake, "Hollywood", happy ending. I highly recommend this movie. It will wake you up to life and its amazing possibilities.

P.S. ultimately, Existentialism is a failed philosophy, but that doesn't make it a bad one. The last half of the 20th century was filled with European (Continental) philosophers explaining exactly *how* Existentialism is failed. But I will leave that as an exercise to the truly curious and thoughtful.

This movie is optimistic about the power of love and forgiveness even if the end of the world is at hand. This movie is more than a romantic comedy. Some moments are poignant drama, others will make you laugh, and some may even draw a tear. Its plot is simple enough, but leaves one to ponder what is most important in life. I loved the mini-adventure, that drew laughs from truly humorous moments and circumstances rather than going for cheap jokes or slapstick. I'm so glad that I watched it. I have only praise for the quality of this movie.

I rented this movie thinking it was going to be a silly dark comedy. While it did have its light moments, a comedy this movie is not. I was moved to tears and I could not get it out of my head. I thought about it, applied it to my life. Cried again. I ended up watching this movie 3 more times before buying it.

If you want to have a lighthearted slapstick comedic experience, maybe you should pass on Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, this is not for you. The second half of the movie is emotional and touching. I have to say, I fell in love with Steve Carell, his performance was incredible.

Wild Child

Wild ChildThis film is full of cheesy goodness. If you are looking for a young chick flick with with a dash of romance, this one is a great choice.

This movie has been done before... A LOT. What sets this film apart is the stellar cast. It is the last movie made by Natasha Richardson and casting Alex Pettyfer as the love interest doesn't hurt. The lead is played by Emma Roberts (the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and Julia Robert's niece), who obviously has taken some pointers from family members. She shines in this role as a snotty rich kid who transforms into the young woman she was meant to be. She got caught up in the fast lane of California living after her mother passed and when her dad has had enough, she gets carted off to her mom's old boarding school in England! There is an obvious clash of cultures as she has to find her way in a foreign school with it's own caste system. Enter the mean girls and a handsome son of a headmistress and there's your plot. You know how it ends but getting there is pure fun!

We all know what is going to happen but isn't that half the reason we watch this kind of movie? As a viewer, you are not looking at this dvd as an option and thinking -I want to watch award winning cinema! You know you are getting a lighthearted teen romp. You'll discover a young woman finding herself, real friends and love as she searches for meaning in her life. The belief that anyone can be transformed is a powerful message even if it is told in silly ways. So sit back, grab a bowl of popcorn with extra butter and enjoy a fun movie.

I saw this movie when I was in Britain last summer. Emma's character wasn't as wild as the title may suggest but there were a lot unexpected twists in this movie that made it more than your regular romcom. I highly recommend this movie and I will definitely buy this.

I had my doubts about this movie, but I knew I had to buy it after watching only 20 minutes. I found the portrayal of American California girls very interesting. I am from Indiana, and I admit, several things that Poppy (the main character) and her friends did line up with prejudices that I've developed through American media. So, seeing that was amusing, but made me wonder if Europeans thought all Americans acted that way (because we do not). I know not all Californians do, either.

I could not stop laughing, and these were laughs, not chuckles. I LOVED seeing Poppy's hand sanitizer. I had bought my own bottle a few days before watching the movie.

There was not a single character that I did not like. Though, Alex Pettyfer's hair could be improved. ;) I like his style in "I Am Number 4" better, but I digress. The actors were beyond amazing, and consequently, I loved the characters. I loved their hair, accents, clothes, facial expressions, everything. The movie was a true delight, and I'm planning to watch it with my Mom. ^_^

ALSO: I am a Christian, and I personally loved the way the headmistress handled Poppy's case. Too many times in Church we encounter wild child Poppys, and we condemn them. We yell at them, order them to clean their act up, show disgust to them, etcetera. Then, we usually chase them out of the Church because they're just too wild. I think Christians should watch this movie because of the valuable lesson in it: Call out the good in people.

Poppy acted the way she did because she was hurting inside. She missed her mother. Many times in real life, people commit negative, hurtful deeds because they are hurting inside. As Christians, we are called to do what Christ did, which was HEAL them and NEVER condemn them. If you heal the wound, the behavior changes automatically. But if you try to "fix" behavior without healing the wound, well, that is as silly as trying to "fix" the speakers without turning the radio to an actual radio station. The behavior is not the problem. It's the manifestation of the problem.

Trailer Park Boys The Movie (2007)

Trailer Park Boys The MovieFirst off, that sounds like a good plan to make some money Hockey Town Dude. The Boys would be proud, you could make like 10-12 bucks a day from those Ebay Dicks. Not quite enough to keep you in hash, rum and chicken fingers but hey, what's stealin' for? Anyways, one of the charms of this TV show that made it such a popular cult favorite is the low-budget, handheld camera technique. Despite the big budget, hollywood production of the movie it still holds all of that Trailer Park Boys charm.

The Boys get oot of jail (kicked oot early, so Ricky can't play goal in the guards vs. inmates ball hockey tournament) and hatch a plan for The Big Dirty, one last heist that will allow them to retire. They're all set to steal vast quantities of change .. why change? Duh .. it's completely untraceable! As can be expected, things don't go 'exactly' as planned and our boys run into trouble with the law.

Another difference between this movie and the show is in the ending. At the center of every TPB plot is a similarly bizarre money-making scheme that goes awry. Of course, the movie is no different but the ending might be a little happier than hardcore TPB fans are accustomed to.

The movie is not canon with the show, you can see a list of a few differences between the movie and the show on wikipedia.

Filmed in beautiful Nova Scotia the cinematography is absolutely amazing. Sets include a trailer park and a prison, I know .. not so beautiful. But a nice, peaceful blue sky sat over many scenes that perfectly fit our Boys' usually frenetic action (I mean 'perfectly fit' in the way that their nice, serene theme music fits them perfectly). ;)

Overall, I thought the movie struck a good balance. TPB fans should enjoy it and first time viewers won't have to know the show to enjoy the movie.

Just picked this one up the other day. AWESOME!!! If you even liked the TV series even a little bit (and c'mon now ya gotta love Julian, Ricky and Bubbs!) this is a great laugh. Loved it!! It's was pretty cool to see some Canadian musical talent in the show too!. Alex Lifeson (Rush), Hugh Dillon (Headstones) and Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) play the parts of a cop, club-owner and another cop, respectively.

Just crack open the beers, put the feet on the table and get ready to laugh your socks off.

Yes, it might be considered to be "low budget" but that truly is one of the magic things about TPB. And, always remember: "A dope trailer is no place for a kitty!"

Simply being the show is so diffrent from anything in america that it takes some getting used to. But after a while you will quickly begin to enjoy the show. I've never met anyone who watched the whole first season and be displeased. Afterwards they'll love the movie as dearly as i do. I have shown the movie to a few before they seen any of the show and had mixed reviews. But never has someone whose watched a little bit of the show not like the Movie. Overall the movie is great, everyone from the shows i back on except trinity. The girl who plays trinity is an awful actress however shes not in it too much. If you are new to the "Boys" then your money would be better spent on a season of the series better yet the entire season of the series! Trailer Park Boys: The Complete Series This movie follows the same premise as pretty much every episode of the series funny bad idea followed by more funny bad ideas with some recreational drug & alcohol use thrown in with badly quoted sayings and somehow manages to only contain about a quarter of the laughs. The production values and cameras seem to be of better quality, if that is something that is important to you; but the "documentary" style shooting of the original series has always been part of the charm for me. One plus to purchasing this movie is that the extras, especially the lost interviews, are almost worth the price of the DVD for any fan.
