Wild Wild West (2011)

Wild Wild WestIn the mid-60s there was a show called "Wild Wild West" that starred Robert Conrad as James "Jim" West, a western version of James Bond, and Ross Martin as his brainy sidekick Artemus Gordon. This show was creative and intelligent and yet full of action. The movie "Wild Wild West" starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline has nothing to do with that television show, unfortunately.

Will Smith is another Jim West and Kevin Kline is another Artemus Gordon in an alternate universe that never existed. In this universe the Wright brothers apparently were asleep as Artemus and Jim were tooling around a giant steam-powered iron spider that is unlikely to exist in any imaginable reality. Indeed, the only point of any vague historical accuracy is that there was a President Grant and there was a meeting of the railroads. After that, this movie is "The Twilight Zone" in the west.

In this fantasy movie Kenneth Branagh plays Dr. Loveless. Once again, forget the wonderful Michael Dunn as the original Dr. Loveless. Branagh has none of the charm and wit of the original. Dr. Loveless has decided to create his own empire based on the ability of his giant spider to trounce anyone who gets in his way. However, he seemed to have neglected to consider that an open cockpit is a sure way to eventually be shot. Along the way we see a number of other equally improbable devices that make for interesting special effects but continual disappointment with the movie.

I have yet to mention that not only is this west some bizarre fantasy version of the original west, but this version of Jim West has a continual string of one-liners that would have allowed him to do stand-up, but not in the alternate reality of this movie where no one seemed to understand his jokes, often including the audience. Kevin Kline also had a number of humorous lines, though his were more ironic and involved, and typically based on technology that exists only in the alternate reality of this world.

This movie does have its moments. If you like comedy and know little about the original "Wild Wild West," you may find the comedy overwhelms the total destruction of history and scientific feasibility; or perhaps you like stories of alternate realities. The special effects are wonderful. I admit that when I could overcome my disappointment that there was no attempt to remain within the vision of the original show I was fascinated by the gadgets. However, gadgetry alone does not overcome the unbelievable story.

Oh, and as if all the other flaws in the movie were not enough to disappoint a viewer, the DVD includes Will Smith doing a hip-hop song. Hip-hop in the west? Perhaps I watched this movie from the wrong perspective. Maybe if I had taken it for a farce, like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," I would have liked the movie better. Then again, probably not.

Wild, Wild, West is undoubtedly one of the year's worst films. One of the factors that makes the movie so frustrating to watch is the fact that it is based on one of the most inventive and original shows I have had the pleasure of seeing. Inventiveness and originality are lacking in this mess of a movie where the script is horrible, the one-liners stale and the performances wooden(except Kenneth Branagh, whom you feel sorry for trying so hard to be evil).

Will Smith is stripped of the charisma that is his best selling point. Kevin Kline, a talented actor is reduced to playing second banana to an uninteresting hero and I have a hard time remembering Salma Hayek is in the movie.

I didn't really expect it to be "good", but I at least expected it to entertain me, instead of providing rest I didn't need. What a waste!

first they cast a black man as an undercover agent in the wild west where he would never be able to help as they would never let him in most places. remember this was before political correctiness or civil rights. then they turn one of the best villins on t.v. into a racist man missing most of his body. then they add state of the art f/x and think they have a great movie. it's pure trash and gets one star because you can't give no stars. a waste and you should see the t.v. show if you want to see this concept really work well. just not good at all, a mess.

When you go to see a Will Smith movie, you expect it to be entertaining and fast-paced. A movie with Kevin Kline might have your expectations leaning more in the direction of cerebral, tight-knit & solid entertainment. If Salma Hayek is in it, well ....at least you expect a flick with visual appeal ...1, 2, 3 STRIKES...Wild Wild West STRIKES OUT! TALK ABOUT DROPPING THE BALL ! Will Smith, whose laid-back, street-wise-cracking veneer, usually hides a well-focused on screen in tensity that is both impossible to miss ordislike ...seemed to be sauntering through the film, feeling embarrassedly like a walking anachronism, considering the "Old West" backdrop! Kevin Kline, on the other hand, who usually brings a certain air of bravura to his oft-times eccentric characterizations, seemed to display a marked inability to take himself seriously when in drag, (Which, unfortunately, is during a good chunk of the film)lapsing into a pathetic sort self-parody, which, considering the script, may have been the only way he could stomach the role ! Salma Hayek, for whom no one is exactly holding their breath for her to win an Oscar as Best Actress, seemed OBSESSED with getting her lines out with as little accent as possible...Despite the fact that she was clearly cast as Mexican in this film...(As opposed to her bit part in The FACULTY!) You could almost imagine "La Mejicanita" standing there, during shooting, with her Accent/ Dialogue Coach, just out of camera range! Salma... concentrate MORE on your ACTING, next time, O.K.?

As far as Barry Sonnenfled's Directing is concerned...well, here we could imagine him running around frantically, till the last minute, editing & re-editing, trying to decide exactly what it is he was trying to do with "WILD"....and of course, not even coming CLOSE to getting it right!

The ONLY reason I rated the movie 2 Stars (as opposed to 0 Stars!) is because of the scope & the

novelty of the Special Effects. The idea of seeing all those well orquestrated, and at times visually stunning effects against an Old West backdrop was the only refreshing & original element in the film ...If you are not a diehard Special Effects buff, I can think of absolutely no reason on earth why you would find anything at all worth seeing in this pathetic excuse for a Blockbuster film !

WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK. they have taken a great tv show, which many of us fondly and raped it. this is so wrong headed i don't know where to start, but here goes.

1. why would they make a black man an agent in the 1800's when he couldn't go in many places and would stick out like a sore thumb. because of the race change for jim west this becomes series of crass racial jokes and has no place in a light hearted adventure series. in fact the tv show never stuped to that level, infact it showed that west's greatest villin was the small in size only dr.loveless played by the great michael dunn!he and west were always evenly matched and had great respect for each other, even when loveless was tring to kill him.

2.the changeing of loveless's person to a legless southern general, and once again the race card is used to makeloveless less likeable when on the show you really liked him even if he was a mad ,evil man.

well you get the idea this is the reason you should leave some things left unmade or in this case unremade. just the pits ,DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS, instead by the complete first season of "THE WILD,WILD,WEST in june of 06 and see what the movie should have been.

Kambakkht Ishq (Blu Ray) (2009)

Kambakkht IshqWow, just when you thought Bollywood had graduated to a more sophisticated level, crapadoodle like KAMBAKKHT ISHQ comes out to put a stink in the room. The heat on this film had been palpable for months leading up to its theatrical release, what with so much money fed into it, rumors of huge Hollywood stars co-starring, possibly Arnold Schwarzenegger, possibly Beyonce performing an item number and maybe Carmen Electra shooting a promotional music video with Akshay and Kareena... Most of these castles in the air crash and burn. KAMBAKKHT ISHQ (meaning "Wretched Love") is quite horrible and crass and offensive. It actually cheeses me that it made so much money in its opening.

Indian cinema doesn't really delve too much in the area of the sex farce, which is what this movie is at its core. But all the elements that make a successful sex farce are markedly absent. Based on the 2002 Tamil film PAMMAL K. SAMBANDAM, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ doesn't at all go for elegance or subtlety or a light touch, and it's about as appropriate as wearing raggedy flip flops to a funeral. But it's not a funeral but rather a wedding where our two leads meet, and it's antagonistic from jump.

Viraj is a womanizing Hollywood stuntman and a devoted bachelor. Simrita is an aspiring surgeon and she used to model to pay off her medical bills; she doesn't believe in love. When Viraj's brother Lucky gets married, Viraj shows up at the church to chastise him, and I think it's around this time, when hearing the cliched, mind-numbing dialogue, that I started getting a bad feeling about the movie. Simrita then pops up and begins to harangue the bride, warning her friend that love doesn't exist. Viraj and Simrita then start heckling each other. We all know where this is going.

SPOILER in the following paragraph, for those who care about things like SPOILERS:

Integral to the plot is a scene in which a surgeon's watch gets lodged into the patient's stomach during surgery. This leads to a pretty funny running gag, one of the very few stabs at humor which works. Turns out, the watch plays a bhajan (spiritual song) on the hour every hour.

Viraj and Simrita keep bumping into each other, all over Los Angeles and even in Italy, and the battle of the sexes rages on. For a sex farce, by western conventions, it doesn't ever get that risque. By Hindi standards, however, it's pretty naughty. Bollywood's definition of raunch involves scandalous kissing scenes between Akshay and Kareena and perceived nudity and, of course, scads of loose American women. The humor is very crude and tasteless, and that there's an abundance of films of this sort in Indian cinema makes me chafe a little. But slapping women around? Akshay and his stupid sidekick doing blackface? And a nasty cavity search? Really? Those are the laughs you're going for? (Well, okay, the cavity search made me laugh.) The production values are certainly polished, but the screenplay is this steaming pile of bat guano.

There's a lot of mugging for the camera, and Akshay is the biggest perpetrator. Akshay Kumar is a Bollywood superstar and is like a Swiss army knife in that he's proficient in any number of genres. Off the top of my head, KHAKEE is a slick action-packed thriller; NAMASTEY LONDON is an awesome romantic drama; HERA PHERI and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI happen to be solid comedies. Except that his last few attempts at wacky comedy have turned Akshay Kumar into a box office flop machine. HEYY BABYY and WELCOME are shifty stuff. Akshay's been aggravating me lately.

Kareena Kapoor was so very good in JAB WE MET. But she's shrill in this one and her character not that likable (not that Akshay is exactly a nice guy himself in this one). And I just smile whenever I see Boman Irani because he's in this one just like he seems to be in every other Bollywood flick, I'm assuming just because he can. The inclusion of big-name Hollywood stars in this flick was something of a coup, and this was highly touted in promoting KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. Sho nuff, we get Brandon Routh, Denise Richards (who isn't here much but is pivotal to the story), and Sylvester Stallone none of whom are exactly A-listers (and no, I don't think Sly is top of the heap anymore). Their appearances make sense in light of the L.A.-based premise as these cats do play themselves. But Stallone's second cameo comes off as far-fetched, unless he really can shove a car two feet away and also rip out a parking meter with his bare hands and single-handedly take on an L.A. street gang. And if you wish to learn how to pronounce the movie title correctly, then by all means stay far away from Sly's attempts to slur it out.

The protagonist is a Hollywood stuntman, so we do get to see Akshay's character performing several stunts. The film's opening scene is pretty neat and it's clear that it's Akshay himself doing all the jumping and kicking and running around, and he does do a lot of the other stunts, some of which, by the way, are staged lavishly. But then just to be clear, I don't know that KAMBAKKHT ISHQ unveils the real behind-the-scenes scoop on the life of the stuntman. KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is no HOOPER or even FALL GUY.

This is Bollywood, so there are musical numbers. They're forgettable.

Okay, "Om Mangalam Mangalam" is sorta catchy.

As a bonus feature, the DVD offers the 26-minute-long "Making Of" segment. This includes interviews with the cast and crew (which also feature the American stars) and plenty of breaking down the musical numbers. None of the folks involved seems to feel remorse about being in this film.

The best part about this whole mess may well be the unusual DVD cardboard case which unfolds into four times its size and into a glossy poster of Akshay and Kareena on one side and smaller photos on the other side. Akshay, what happened to you, dude?

It was great to get it faster then what they said it was going to arrive . Truly enjoyed it as soon as it got here. My family was happy to watch it.

This film is a real mess, and left me feeling embarrassed. Kareena and Akshay have no real chemistry, and at times it feels that all Akshay can do now is far out and ridiculous comedy. He seems to have had more box offices bombs than anyone in recent years.

The film is childish and the performances are absolutely dreadful. Denise Richards, and the other western stars seem to have been given no direction, and if grinning at the camera is acceptable to the director, Sabbir Khan, then perhaps its time he found another profession. This film is nothing short of embarrassing.

Upon reading the prior reviews, I was hesitant to rent this movie. Nonetheless, having seen other Akshay and Kareena films I knew that it could not be that bad. An, I am glad that I did. I loved the energy and frankfulness in this film. The storyline was again, interesting and fresh. Loved Om Mangalesh and how it was used in the film. This film is not bad. It is a love story and in the end, you are happy for them. I loved the rental and it lead to me purchasing the video. If you are and Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor fan, you will enjoy this film.

Courageous (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) (2011)

CourageousI was able to see a free viewing of this movie thru LifeWay ministries through our local church. AMAZING MOVIE!!! Just like with FLYWHEEL, FACING THE GIANTS and FIREPROOF these brothers have made a movie that can change peoples lives. This movie is about fathers and their role in the family. What would happen if fathers actually connected with their wives and kids......what a diffrence they would make! I would reccommend this movie to everyone!!!!Comes out in theatres september 30th, 2011.

I had the privilege of viewing "Courageous" this afternoon with my wife and two very gracious friends who had secured tickets for the initial showing in our city. I am a police officer, having logged on 23 years with the Carlsbad Police Department (NM), so I was looking forward to this movie with great anticipation.

Our friends asked me to comment on the authenticity of the daily law enforcement duties that would be depicted in this film. I can say the Kendrick brothers really did their homework; the daily operations were very well done and true to the life of the law enforcement officer.

"Honor begins at home" is the main message of this story focusing on the duties we fathers have in raising our children. God expects we fathers to be "leaders" in our homes. Seeing there is a serious problem in this country of fatherless homes, the writers address this issue very well.

The action is pure adrenaline; I was with these men every step of the way. There is also tragedy that will tear your heart. Yes, I shed some tears.

I commend the Kendrick brothers, all the fine actors and actresses, and the production crew for again creating a quality dynamic movie that will touch and convict hearts. I know that I was convicted about being apathetic in a few areas of my life. Everyone please view this movie, and may God bless you.

Expect in-your-face fatherhood morals bursting from an action/emotion story.

Expect the F-words: Faith, Fatherhood, Fears, Failings, Family, Forgiveness.

Expecting goodness, I entered the theater for the 1st opening day matinee. Found it great.

Sheriff Deputies know the necessity of partnership. They take it to heart by forming a small group of men, adding one ethnic carpenter outsider, and strive to make a difference in the lives of their families. They base their "Resolutions" vows upon the Bible. Unfortunately it takes some tragic circumstances to get the men to this point. Their courageous open faith position will not always be taken well...as Dep. Adam Mitchell (Alex Kendrick-Dir, Writer, Editor, Actor) states, "some will mock, some will have no resolve, others will say `I WILL'. Men of courage with God's help." He notes they will (and do) face conflict, challenge, controversy, & need courage. Each man has his own family issues, each an individual path of struggle.

A debate is sure to develop. Which is best, "Courageous" or "Fireproof" (2008); the last 2 films by the Kendrick brothers. I vote, equal. Alex does it all in this 4th Faith-based film adventure, while Stephen writes and produces. They also did "Flywheel" 2003; and "Facing the Giants" 2006. Is this film a moral and faith statement from the writers? YES! Of course! That's what they and their church intend. Expect it, and perhaps be blessed.

This film begins immediately with ACTION, life-threatening, a crashing peak, and then an emotional end to the scene. Hold on to your hat, because you have almost 2 hours of emotion, action, and even some comedy ahead after that. Ken Bevel, as Hayes (Yes, from Fireproof) is new to this police squad. No big HOLLYWOOD stars in this low-budget film that relies on none of the typical theater gimmicks. This film, as in preceding Kendrick film successes, relies on spiritual subject matter, PG13 rating, and the targeting of the Christian Theater viewer, eager for BIGGER-FASTER-STRONGER, but also family and faith oriented. It's worked for the Kendricks' casts & crews in the past, it will work again. Expect "COURAGEOUS" in the theater for a few weeks, and then the DVD will be bought by those same viewers...and more.

Viewership will grow, word of mouth, father to father, mom to mom, pew to pew, family to family.

This movie is amazing. Never before have I been brought to tears during the first few moments of a film! So many themes were woven into 2 hours of film: fatherhood, forgiveness, courtship, parenting, obedience, trust, despair/hope, love, strength, and of course COURAGE! The Kendrick brothers will take you on a ride of emotions....I laughed so hard, I cried. Then I cried so hard again. I did feel exhausted upon leaving the theater, but in a fresh, encouraged way. Wether you are a father, mother, young person or older person, you will be moved and motivated to spend your time on earth here with purpose! Don't forget to bring the tissues!

As a single mom, I was a little afraid that a movie that encourages fathers towards faithfulness would be discouraging to me. I was afraid that it might poke where I hurt.

Several of my teens and I watched _Courageous_ during its opening weekend. I laughed really hard; I cried too. I was pleased that the plot had some unexpected twists. I felt the characterization was believable. Some of the one-on-one violence (punching) was a little much for my stomach, but certainly seemed to fit the plot; it wasn't gratuitous. The next morning it suddenly occurred to me that I noticed not one swear word. Not one. (Thanks, Sherwood Films!!)

Over the last 14 months much has sapped me of strength and courage, sadly, all of it coming from within the Christian community. By contrast, this movie gave me renewed strength and courage for the task before me as a single mom.

In my family, both _Fireproof_ and _Courageous_ are now mandatory viewing for everyone age 12 and up. Jesus used stories to engage hearts and minds to turn people towards Himself. _Courageous_, likewise uses a story to engage hearts and minds to turn people towards Christ and toward their God-given responsibilities as parents. I highly recommend it.

Even for single moms. :)

The Dukes (2007)

The DukesRobert Davi has always been a wonderful actor as anyone who followed his career knows. But too often he was stuck in projects that were not worthy of his talent. Now, at last, he has found the answer write and direct his own films. And "The Dukes" is his first such effort and it is a winner. A great story that has both comedy and pathos. A "feel good" movie that the whole family will enjoy. And, best of all, Robert finally does some real singing as opposed to the "throw away" bits in "Goonies" and several other films. The man has so many talents and this film does him proud.

This creation, from actor Robert Davi, was thoroughly enjoyable from beginning until end! I would recommend it for the whole family (except the little kids).

Judging from the song at the end, many of the actors have great singing voices, too. Somebody told me that they recorded a track to promote the film; I'd love to find it on the internet.

Towards the end of the movie, look for a really nice surprise appearance from veteran actor Joseph Campanella, which brought me to tears, as it reminded me of my own grandfather.

"The Dukes" is what some might call a 'sleeper'. I will be ordering a copy for my family and perhaps a few more for relatives and friends.

Robert Davi has created an instant classic. I loved the film in the theater, and it is just as good if not better the second time around on DVD. Love the commentary on the disk. This film is very timely and will know doubt go down in history as a social commentary about these times we live in decades from now. Funny, quirkey, exciting and real. A nice break form the boring old studio formula films. Finally something new and original.

Read Best Reviews of The Dukes (2007) Here

When I start the film, it begins with Robert Davi telling us he directed this film in case we missed it in the credits. The Dukes were the top do-wop group in 1963. It is filmed in 2007, but they don't look over 60, and Danny (Robert Davi) has a 38 year old ex-wife. Try not to think too hard. The group is broke, can't get gigs and work at a restaurant for Aunt Vee (Miriam Margolyes). George (Chazz Palminteri) likes full figured women. The group decides they are going to rob a dental co-op of 35 pounds of low grade gold.

The film was never funny. It had humorous moments. There wasn't enough drama to be a drama, or thriller to be a thriller. It was hardly a crime movie. It lacked the cleverness of classic indie. Now having said all that, it wasn't a bad film, it just didn't feel entertained in any way after I saw it.

No f-bombs, no nudity, implied sex.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Midnight in Paris"All men fear death. It's a natural fear that consumes us all," says a character in "Midnight in Paris"... "However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears."

Paris is her name. She has seduced writers for centuries, and in "Midnight in Paris" writer/director Woody Allen makes love to her with his camera, in the most poetic of ways.

Or perhaps he's referring to art, to achieving such intimacy with your craft and such artistic climax that you become immortal, like Hemingway, Matisse, Fitzgerald, Picasso, Dali, or Allen himself.

Gil Pender, the protagonist in Allen's new film, has never experienced that kind of artistic height. Played quite convincingly by Owen Wilson (in a surprising and refreshing role that Allen had to re-write for him), Gil is an aspiring novelist who is visiting Paris with his girlfriend (Rachel McAdams) and her parents. But while they prefer to shop and visit museums, Gil chooses to wonder about. "No work of art can compare to a city," he says.

Pender is actually mesmerized by the City of Lights and fantasizes about what he believes was Paris' Golden Age, the 1920s with the Lost Generation of American writers walking its streets, writing in sidewalk cafés, and frequenting smoky bars and flamboyant parties. One evening at midnight, trying to find his way back to the hotel, something magical happens to Gil. Really! But no reviewer should give that magic away.

Getting lost in the city seems to be a symbol for how lost he really is, as a person and as a writer, and although he's somewhat insecure and anxious (he even carries a bottle of Valium with him), he's actually a likable guy and soon meets a few bohemian friends (played by Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, among others) who give him much-needed advice about life and the creative process.

From the beginning, "Midnight in Paris" grabs you with its witty and sophisticated dialogue about art, culture and literature, and in the second half the dialogue gets even better. For instance, my favorite line comes from one of the bohemian characters, who believes that: "the job of the artist is not to succumb to despair but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence."

Another piece of wisdom comes from one of the antagonists who criticizes Gil for being infatuated with the past: "Nostalgia is denial...a flaw in the romantic imagination of people who find it difficult to cope with the present." Think about that one while watching the film, for I believe, there lies the moral of this fabulous fable about the past and the present.

At age 75--with more than 40 films under his belt--Allen has created a film that literally glows. Its dazzling cinematography, inventive plot, and Parisian score, combined with the top-notch acting and set-design, makes for an almost-perfect film, one that's not only clever and thought-provoking, but also entertaining and accessible--even to mainstream audiences.

A much welcomed escape. Went to see it at the movies twice and will buy a copy for my DVD library. Romantic, great story, excellent characters and depictions of the late-greats are tops. I'll refrain from fawning over this movie too much as I don't want to spoil it for the others. It's magical. What can I say but go see it and that we need more movies like this. Refreshing break from melting buildings, crumbling sidewalks, 50 car pileups, crude, rude humor and stacks of shot up bad guys. A breath of fresh air.

This review may contain minor spoilers...

Woody Allen's 41st film opens with several minutes of exquisite shots of Paris set to Jazz music. Cinematographer Darius Khondji elegantly captures these beautiful sites and effectively sets the tone for the film in which Owen Wilson plays Gil Pender, a Hollywood screenwriter working on his first novel while in Paris with his fiancée Inez. After running into old acquaintances Paul and Carol (Michael Sheen and Nina Arianda), Gil goes on a walk to get away from it all and finds himself transported to the 1920s France, an era that he adores. There, he meets literary and cultural giants such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda Fitzgerald, Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and Salvador Dalí, among others. He also meets and becomes fascinated with Adriana (Marion Cotillard), Picasso's mistress, whose ideas about time are in synch with Gil's own.

From the first frame, Midnight in Paris is one of Allen's most charming films in years. I've never seen a Woody Allen film I didn't like and there are only a few I wouldn't bother watching again. The general consensus is that his recent films are weak, especially in comparison to his earlier work. I am of the opinion that he's never made a bad film and each new film he made would be held in higher regard if not for the (many) films that had come before it. Whatever your stance is on Allen's films, both past and present, I think you'll agree that this is one of his best films in years. All of the elements; the casting, the setting, the style, and the story come together perfectly to create a magical romantic-comedy/fantasy. Midnight in Paris has many references to classic literature and film that certain audiences may not catch, but this movie is just so likeable that knowledge of the subjects involved is not necessary to enjoy it. It may cause you to seek it out after the film has ended however, but since when is knowledge a bad thing? It's certainly an accessible film, make no mistake about it, but it's also for a certain audience. If you're the casual moviegoer, you'll find little to dislike about it. If you're part of the audience this is intended for, you'll find almost nothing to dislike about it.

The musical score is so brilliant that it couldn't possibly be original. While many parts of the score are recognizably made of classic jazz music and some Cole Porter songs, I figured the main theme was original; alas, there is no original score for the film. The use of music and the music used is brilliant, as well as essential to the effervescent tone of the film. I can't rave enough about Khondji's cinematography as it truly evokes the beauty of Paris and captures it in exactly the idealized way that Gil sees it. The whole film is beautifully shot, from the first frame to the last. The cinematography is a loving testament to the otherworldly beauty of Paris and the beautiful sites that the camera lovingly lingers on makes the film work almost as a visual tour of the city, but don't think for a minute that this is a bad thing. This is a fantasy film and Khondji makes Paris appear as the ultimate fantasy.

As usual, Allen has assembled a wonderful cast lead by Owen Wilson in the Woody Allen role. Wilson shares some of the same mannerisms and speech patterns we'd expect if Allen played the role, but brings a distinct giddiness that only Wilson can convey. Gil is a memorable, extremely likeable protagonist whose wide-eyed wonder reflected my own. Allen never misses a chance to take jabs at pedantic, pseudo-intellectuals and Michael Sheen plays one perfectly, providing some great back-and-forth banter with Gil. Every actor makes an impression with their characters, with Kurt Fuller and Mimi Kennedy being especially funny and well utilized as Inez's judgmental, materialistic parents. The historical figures throughout the film are given wonderful characterizations, with Corey Stoll turning in a vivacious, poetic performance as Hemingway and Kathy Bates making Gertrude Stein exude warmth and intelligence. Adrien Brody has an inspired cameo as the great surrealist Salvador Dalí and his scene was certainly a highlight ("I see...rhinoceros"). With the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni, making an appearance as well, Allen's strong group of actors are one of the driving forces behind the reason this movie works so well.

Midnight in Paris features some of Allen's best writing years. The characters are well-developed of course, but the story is more inspired than usual. The dialogue is clever and witty (one of my favorite examples being Gil suggesting the plot of The Exterminating Angel to director Luis Buñuel). Allen even takes a moment to take some light-hearted jabs at Tea Party politics. The "earrings scene" meanwhile is the most well-executed comedic scene that Allen has filmed in some time. This is Allen's 41st theatrical film since 1972 and while he's admittedly had some hits and misses, he proves that at the age of 75 he's still capable of churning out a genuinely great film. After making a huge per-theatre average on only six screens, Sony slowly expanded Midnight in Paris and it has consistently remained in the top 10 movies at the box office since. This is a huge feat for a Woody Allen film. Audiences have responded because Allen has made a charming, lovely, whimsical fantasy film that shows Allen at his most accessible and most consistent. With 41 films under his belt it's hard to say where Midnight in Paris fares amongst those other releases, but based on sheer likeability and quality I can safely say it's my favorite film of 2011 thus far.

This is the best movie I've seen in years! Finally an entertaining movie with intelligence, humor, lovely scenes of Paris, great music and a message. No crashing cars, burning buildings, or blatant and meaningless sex. A marvelous and intriguing story line....And one could actually hear the dialogue in the absence of background noise so increasingly annoying lately. I saw it in a theater and recommend that if it's still out near you but I will also have to own this one. Woody Allen....a master.

Midnight in Paris is, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable films that I have seen in a long time. Masterly crafted by director Woody Allen, it is a well paced film, full of beautifully shot and magically captured moments of Paris. A film of romance and love, Midnight in Paris also uses the science fiction device of time travel to create a very fun and compelling story. The ensemble cast is wonderful and entertaining. This could easily be considered one of Woody Allen's best films.

Scary Movie 5 (Unrated) (Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet) (2012)

Scary Movie 5 Scary Movie is back after 5 years and I saw it as early as I could in theaters. I didn't think it was the best of the series but still was a good spoof on some of the latest horror films. I agree about the other review how it had a different tone and had more dark humor in it. It mainly focuses on Paranormal Activity but also quite a bit on Black Swan, Mama and Rise Of the Planet Of The Apes. I can't believe how many people dislike the Scary Movie franchise, I even find it a bit underrated. It's not a masterpiece but just great dumb, hilarious spoofs. The pg-13 rating should've been R due to a high amount of sexual content (no actual nudity though) and language. Scary Movie V was mostly enjoyable throughout and delivers many great laughs.

I'm a huge fan of the scary movie series of films, and while I can say I enjoyed this one and LOLed at most times, I can also assure this one doesn't feel like an actual "scary movie". The acting was good, but without Anna Faris or Regina Hall, I just don't feel the same. Much better than the second one to say at least.

Director Malcolm D. Lee (The Soul Men, The Best Man) took a formula story of parody with characters originally created by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Aaron Seltzer and others and a final script by Pat Proft (Real Genius, Police Squad) and David Zucker (Airplane, The Naked Gun) and had some fun making fun of films like `The Help', The Cabin In The Woods', Paranormal Activity, Black Swan and `Rise of the Planet of the apes'.

As the fifth in the line, the comedy is simple and the jokes are always not as obvious, but in `Scary Movie 5' its Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan who have a really funny opening scene of making of a `sex tape' of themselves. Without saying too much, it literally goes over the top and both Charlie and Lindsay obviously have no problem making fun of themselves as well. It is probably the best bit in the film.

Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Suite Life) and Simon Rex (Scary Movie 1,2,3 & 4) play a mother and father who obvious have a house with issues. The movie centers around the two of them realizing and then dealing with the `ghostlike' problem the house is having. People like Snoop Dogg, Mike Tyson, Mac Miller, Big Ang and Sharee Whitefield all make cameo appearance of themselves. All are exaggerated, but definitely making fun of themselves.

Overall it's a video movie for me because the previous films were a little funnier to me and had more gags. I did really enjoy the opening with Charlie and Lindsay and applaud both of them for doing it because it clearly shows that they can laugh at themselves and we along with them. Not for the whole family, but if you're a fan of the series you might enjoy it!

"I think there's something going on in this house. Something about this mama." After Charlie Sheen dies his kids are left to themselves in a cabin in the woods. When they are found they are returned to his brother and his new wife. The new parents discover that the kids are not normal and strange things begin to happen around the house. There really isn't too much I can say about this movie. I will say that it was much better then I expected, but I also expected it to be very awful. I thought the first movie in the series was funny. I didn't like the second one (because of the tin arm guy). The third one was OK and I really don't remember the fourth one but I know I saw it. I was even more leery about this one because Anna Faris isn't in it. I will admit that I laughed out loud a few times throughout but like most spoof movies it starts out funny then by the end you are just waiting for it to be over. I did expect much worse though. Overall, better then I expected and it did make me laugh. I give it a B-.

I have always been a huge fan of the scary movie franchise but I was a little disappointed by the trailer. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it at the movies. It may not had been the best movie... I wouldn't even say it was good, but I can honestly say I was entertained w/ this hit or miss spoof..

Love Wedding Marriage (2011)

Love Wedding MarriageI've been a fan of actor Dermot Mulroney for over twenty years. His laconic and naturalistic charm has oftentimes been the most interesting thing in his films--even if the movies themselves sometimes missed the mark. The comedic romp "Love, Wedding, Marriage" is his feature film directorial debut (he is NOT in the movie) and, strangely, it lacks the ease and laid-back appeal that I've come to expect from him as an actor. You'd think, at a minimum, he'd be able to coax terrific and funny performances out of his cast to make up for the script's shortcomings. And you're not likely to encounter a larger compendium of TV sitcom cliches than those that comprise the movie's central plot. Here everyone appears to be in a separate movie with key roles being bland, others overwrought, and others constantly bordering on a manic hysteria. Maybe all this would be forgivable if the film aspired to real laughs as opposed to outrageous silliness. You may disagree, but effective romantic comedies distinguish themselves when they are grounded in a truth and a reality. They may be silly, but there's a real heart beating within. "Love, Wedding, Marriage," unfortunately, is so artificial--not a moment or an emotion ever rings true.

Of course, in the movie, everyone is wildly attractive and wildly successful even though they act like they are junior high students. The appealing Mandy Moore and Kellan Lutz play the central characters. Their newlywed bliss is interrupted when her parents (Jane Seymour and James Brolin) separate due to a long-ago indiscretion. Moore (who in movie-land is, of course, the world's least believable marriage counselor) channels so much energy into her parent's dilemma that it might derail her own happiness. Slapstick antics ensue as both couples attend a relationship boot camp (poor Colleen Camp) and the elders hop around with another eccentric therapist (a wasted Christopher Lloyd). The shenanigans of Moore become increasingly desperate, unpleasant, and unlawful as the movie continues to journey down avenues best left unexplored. As this is what it is--you are never in doubt as to how things will turn out--there are just far too few laughs along the way.

Here's the deal. It's hard not to like the cast of "Love, Wedding, Marriage" despite the film's inconsistencies and flaws. Brolin, in particular, seems to be getting a kick as the newly religious father. But the film has the dramatic intensity of a second rate "Three's Company" episode minus the canned studio laughter. A lot of talented people came together to make a perfectly ordinary and expected film. If you are a fan of any of the leads, you might want to check this out. Secondary performances by Jessica Szohr (Moore's sister) and Michael Weston (Lutz's best friend) have their moments. But overall, everyone is performing to the rafters with over-the-top zeal to divert attention from the fact that the script offers little in the way of originality or noteworthy humor. A disappointing misfire--and I was genuinely rooting for Mulroney! KGHarris, 9/11.

I bought this movie and watched it hoping for a funny cute romantic story from Mandy Moore. I love the actors in this and thought they would make a good movie, the actors did their best with what was given to them. The script was kind of blah. I enjoyed parts of the movie but will probably never watch it again. So I say rent it before you buy it so you know if you really want to own it!!

Good story line and relaxing entertainment. Premise is believable. Too many words required for these reviews--wish they would make them shorter.

This isn't the funniest romantic comedy, but it works pretty well as a movie. The movie features the rocky marriages of a divorce councilor and her parents'. The ups and downs in the marriages seem realistic and not overly Hollywoodized something I appreciate as a married person myself. The plot even had a few original twists and turns. I for one was actually surprised by the ending, something I can't say about another romantic comedy I've ever seen. Overall, not bad.
