Pirate Radio (2009)

I am heartbroken! When I originally watched Pirate Radio I didn't realize it was the UK version. It was fantastic, the story, the music everything I couldn't wait till it came out on dvd. Then when it finally came out I couldn't find it anywhere to buy it. Not even Walmart was carrying it in their stores which I thought was strange. Finally I came to Amazon and bought mine. Wow what a butchered piece of crap. I don't know why the 2 dvd's are so different. Yeah the dvd's do contain the deleted scenes, most of which were included in the UK version but it's not the same. If you are going to buy Pirate Radio do yourself a huge favor and find a way to get the UK version. Watch out for the coding for your dvd player as UK dvd's don't play in USA dvd players, but from what I understand you can get the blue ray and get the UK version that way.

What a way to butcher a movie that was so great!!!! Someone seriously needs smacked for this one!

This film has just come out in the UK. For once, we (in the UK) got this film released here first. Its usually the other way round! Absolutely loved this film from beginning to end. It captures the essence of that era perfectly, and it is a film I could watch again and again. The whole cast's acting was superb throughout. My biggest surprise came from Rhys Ifans who portrayed the sex god DJ Gavin fantastically. What a sexy voice for the radio shame I can't mention one DJ on air at the moment who sounds the same...!

Unfortunately, I myself, was born in 1979, so wasn't around in that decade. However I took my mum to see this film as she was 21yrs old in 1966. She remembers listening to the pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, and remembers all the political controversy surrounding it. She thought it was a great film too.

If you appreciate the best music of all time, proper rock n roll from the 60's/70's, then you will love this film. It's a real feel good movie that you will appreciate if you ever wished you had lived through that era, or you were lucky enough to experience it first hand.

IF you want to know what it was like to listen to your radio in the mid 60's in Europe, buy this movie!

My family moved to Brussels in early 1964 when I was a teen. At that time, in early 1964 all I had to listen to was Radio Luxemburg. That station only played the first minute of any rock song, I have no idea why. In the summer of 1964 Radio Caroline started up, a pirate radio station. There were two of them, one in the North Sea and one south of England. I listened to radio caroline south all the time. They not only played a whole song, they actually played songs from everywhere, the west to east coast of America and British songs. This movie portrays the station as kinda crude in their language. Truthfully....YES! I will never forget New Year's Eve 1964 at 11pm, lying in my bed listening to them and hearing things I NEVER heard on American radio. I was lying there in pain trying not to laugh too loud for my parents to hear me as I heard their jokes. There were two DJ's on that night until midnight, both drunk!

The person who started Radio Caroline was an American and he named them for Caroline Kennedy. The radio control room you see in the movie is an exact replica of the control room on Radio Caroline.

Though this movie is fiction, the truth is that there was a wedding performed on Radio Caroline North and Radio Caroline South did sink in a force 10 gale, much to the glee of the British government.

This movie shows the audience exactly what it was like in Europe in the mid 60's with the freedom of pirate radios, like nothing America ever had, or the world will ever have again!

I saw the movie before they cut so many scenes out and after and I have to say it was a better movie before they deleted so many scenes. The bachelor party...the banter when the DJ's were climbing...so many deleted scenes! I think so many people feel the movie was disjointed because it was ruined after it was changed so much. A shame I think.

Snatch (2000)

Some people write in their reviews the movie is braindead, stupid and not funny at all. Well, it depends on what kind of humor you prefer. If you like Tarantino, Coen brothers, Guy Ritchie's "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", films like "Thursday", "Get Shorty" and "Way of the Gun", then this opus is just for you. If you can't stand all of the listed above just skip this one.

To my opinion "Snatch" is much better then previous Ritchie's work, more than that it's one of the best criminal comedies. It's more criminal than others, it's more funny than others. Guy Ritchie actually did his best here and created an atmosphere of absurd, chaotic fun. The acting is perfect, Brad Pitt is totally different from what we used to see, Dennis Farina is just soooo hilarious! Now I can't normally see him in other movies I recall "Snatch" and begin to laugh hysterically.

The characters' lines are funny and the way they deliver them is even funnier. By the way it's one of the few films I had to watch with captions I couldn't understand much of being said because of their cockney (if I'm not mistaken) accent.

Anyway if you like crazy criminal comedies watch it without any question. If you don't watch something else instead.

"Snatch" is a movie that takes a little patience to get into. The first 15-20 minutes are a bit confusing. There are a lot of characters to introduce, and Ritchie's fitful editing style reminiscent of music video-style flash is something the viewer will have to get used to. But once it settles down and we get into the flow of it, it is a very entertaining, even hilarious, movie.

Brad Pitt does a superb job and shows once more why he is not only a big star but a fine actor. All the actors in this are excellent. It's a film about confusion, dumb plots, and drastic mistakes made by people who think they're smart when really they are all dumb as lamposts.

This movie is made with real flair and an ear for "talk." I would suggest watching it with ENGLISH SUBTITLES ON. This is the great innovation of DVD and it makes the picture a bit more coherent. There is a section when Pitt delivers one of his prodigious mumbles that the subtitles simply give up. It is actually totally invented by Pitt. Don't worry if you aren't getting it all the first time you see it. It's really a small tour de force by Ritchie and needs to be seen at least twice to get the full effect..

I purchased this item and found that disk one was the old superbit edition without the commentary track. I emailed Sony and they quickly responded saying that this was a mistake with the first production run. If you mail in disk 1 along with the proof of purchase and copy of the email from Sony, they will send you the proper disk 1. So, if you have this dvd with the wrong disk one, just email Sony and they will tell you what to do.

"Snatch" is a wild ride with a complicated plot that centers on a stolen diamond and 3 different gangs who try to steal it. This was Guy Ritchie's second film after "Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels." I'm looking forward to Ritchie's "Revolver" with Jason Statham & Ray Liotta. Obviously, "Swept Away" with wife Madonna starring was a misstep.

The cast is excellent. Jason Statham is now a star after the two "Transporter" films. As Turkish, he has a droll sense of humor, his own code of ethics and loyalty to his friend Tommy played by Stephen Graham from "Gangs of New York." Turkish serves as the film's narrator.

The obvious scene-stealer is Brad Pitt as the nutty Irish boxer Mickey O'Neil. Since Pitt's breakthrough role in "Thelma & Louise" back in 1991 and through his Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for "12 Monkeys" (1995), he's developed into one of Hollywood's brightest stars. The frustrating and amazingly hilarious schtick here is that you can barely understand a word of the inarticulate Mickey's dialogue, yet all his friends nod and agree profusely. It really is funny once you get into the swing of noncomprehension. The fight scenes are also excellent.

Somewhat overlooked, but equally impressive is the short cameo of Benicio Del Toro as the Jewish gangster Franky Four Fingers who loves crime but has a weakness for gambling. Del Toro is obviously a highly regarded actor with his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "Traffic" (2000) and his nomination for "21 Grams" (2003). His ability to go from Jewish Orthodox to the volatile Frankie demonstrates great range.

Vinnie Jones plays Bullet Tooth Tony who is hired to find Frankie. He does a great job. Jones was excellent in "Swordfish" (2001) and is set to appear in next year's "X-Men 3." Lennie James who was in "Sahara" this year plays Sol who owns the pawnshop and has two bumbling cohorts to help get him in trouble. Alan Ford who was in "American Werewolf in London" back in 1981 and in "Exorcist: The Beginning" last year plays the wild gang leader Brick Top who likes to feed his enemies to the pigs. Rade Sherbedgia who was in a film "Fever" (2003) with Vanessa Redgrave & Angelia Jolie (--makes you wonder, eh?--), plays the delightfully sinister Russian gangster Boris the Blade. Dennis Farina who had a great cameo in the HBO mini-series "Empire Falls" romps around as Avi. And of course, the dog that swallows the diamond is also tremendously funny!

"Snatch" is excellent because it combines the MTV-style editing with a complex plot whose unifying element is the stolen diamond. It's so fast-paced that it demands the viewer to be engaged or get lost in the action. Ritchie and this excellent cast make this a memorable DVD. Enjoy!

Hey, have you heard about that guy who just married Madonna? Who knew that he also made movies! Guy Ritchie has done it again. Where "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" knocked on our hip-dialouge-driven-action-movie starved door (due in part to the 3 year absence of Mr. Tarantino), "Snatch" kicks open the door and comes at us with guns blazing. Snatch revolves around a stolen "diamond the size of a fist" that changes hands between quite a few of London's most unsavory characters. Characters such as underground boxing promoter Turkish (Jason Stratham) and thief extrodanaire/gambling junkie Frankie Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) Others include an impossible to kill russian hitman, a ganster that feeds people to pigs, a 400 pound getaway driver, and a squeaking dog. The story line is masterfully balanced, giving ample screen time to each and every facet of this amazing, gritty world of Ritchie. There are more than a few memorable performances, but none seem to shine like Brad Pitt as Mickey O'Niell and Vinnie Jones as Bullet Tooth Tony. Brad Pitt is hardly recognizable as a scruffy, tatooed gypsy boxer who can knock any man out with one punch. You can tell Brad leapt entirely into Mickey's skin and started running. His barely intelligible gypsy drawl is far and away the funniest running gag in th ewhole film. Pitt has given us the antithesis of what Holloywood has deemed him, no more is he to be called the sexiest man alive. He has now earned the title of the "best damn actor we've got!" If you haven't heard of British bad boy Vinnie Jones yet, you will now. His performance as the enforcer Bullet Tooth Tony is the breakout of the millenium. His quiet fierce intelligence burns through his gruff appearance and into each member of the audience, leaving them felling enlightened and warned all at once. I only have 1000 words to use here, that hardly seems enough, but I can think of one word that describes this movie perfectly, "neccessary". It's refreshing to have a film that entertains without insulting it's audience's intelligence. Mr. Ritchie, thank you for giving movie viewers hope of a brave and ballsy new world. In a time when the genre has faltered, it's nice to know that the hip and frantic world of bad boys who know how to use both brains and guns is alive and well and married to Madonna.

Friday / Menace II Society / Set It Off (Triple-Feature) (2012)

I was greatly disappointed when I began watching these movies. The picture quality was that of an old VHS and changed into dvd quality as the movies played. Rarely did I see anything close to blu-ray quality picture.

Blazing Saddles (2006)

"...of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives." Thus spoke Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman), the State Procurer, Attorney General and Assistant to the Governor as he plotted against the residents of Rock Ridge in Mel Brooks' hilarious western spoof "Blazing Saddles", which was first released to theaters in 1974. With the meager budget of only $2.6-million, the film grossed over $119.5-million, making it the highest grossing western of all time until the release of "Dances with Wolves" in 1990, which grossed over $184-million. The success of "Blazing Saddles" is attributable in large part to the superb direction and writing (in conjunction with several other writers) of Mel Brooks, who (of course) also acted in the film in three separate roles: as Gov. William J. LePetomaine, an Indian chief and a World War I aviator. Equally important are the many very talented comedic actors who brought the film to life.

The plot of "Blazing Saddles", as I eluded to in my review opening, takes place primarily in the fictional old-west town of Rock Ridge, whose residents seemingly all have the same last name and who have been mercilessly besieged by a group of thugs who are lead by a man named Taggart (Slim Pickens, 1919-1983). After the thugs kill the sheriff of Rock Ridge, the residents send an urgent plea to Gov. LePetomaine to immediately appoint a new sheriff. Gov. LePetomaine delegates the appointment to his assistant Hedley Lamarr, whose nefarious secret agenda is the destruction of Rock Ridge to make way for a new railroad line. Lamarr devises what he believes will be the final, unconscionable inducement to the residents of Rock Ridge for them to vacate: the appointment of a black sheriff, Black Bart (Cleavon Little, 1939-1992). Most of the residents of Rock Ridge are aghast when Sheriff Bart rides into town. However, he quickly acquires a sidekick in Jim 'The Waco Kid' (Gene Wilder) and some unsolicited attentions from the heavily accented visiting stage performer Lili Von Shtupp (Madeline Kahn, 1942-1999), whose passions include the consumption of schnitzengruben. The story continues to entertain as it builds to a climax that only the twisted comedic genius of Mel Brooks could devise. Also, in classic Mel Brooks fashion, the film includes several musical interludes that include the film's title song (sung by Frankie Laine), "The Ballad of Rock Ridge", "I'm Tired" (sung by Madeline Kahn), "The French Mistake" and "April in Paris". Other memorable characters include Olson Johnson (David Huddleston), Rev. Johnson (Liam Dunn, 1916-1976), Mongo (Alex Karras in his first big-screen role), Howard Johnson (John Hillerman), Van Johnson (George Furth), Gabby Johnson (Jack Starrett, 1936-1989), Harriett Johnson (Carol DeLuise, a.k.a. Carol Arthur), Dr. Sam Johnson (Richard Collier, 1919-2000), Buddy Bizarre (Dom DeLuise) and a cameo by Count Basie (1904-1984). There were also several brief uncredited appearances by Anne Bancroft, Gilda Radner (1946-1989) and Rodney Allen Rippy who played Bart at age 5.

Overall, I rate "Blazing Saddles" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. It is a hysterically funny film that I can highly recommend to everyone. Though none of Mel Brooks' other films were as financially successful as "Blazing Saddles", many are noteworthy of mention, including "The Producers" (1968), "Young Frankenstein" (1974), "High Anxiety" (1978), "The History of the World, Part 1" (1981) and "Spaceballs" (1987).

Blazing Saddles is one of the great comedies of all time. Unfortunately, it's likely that no major studio today would release it. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Something About Mary and American Pie (all hilarious movies which I would highly recommend, by the way) contain toilet humor that makes Mel Brooks at his most graphic seem like a Disney movie in comparison. However, today's politically correct Hollywood would be horrified with a comedy that uses racial epithets left and right, worrying about the backlash that subject matter would cause.

This is too bad because Blazing Saddles shows that such language, given the right context, can actually combat bigotry by showing how stupid it really is. Cleavon Little, as Sheriff Bart, and Gene Wilder, as The Waco Kid, are presented as islands of sanity in a sea of ignorant, racist townspeople. The 'n' word is thrown out repeatedly, but is intended as an insult to the people who say it rather than a slur against blacks. Mel Brooks, a very liberal Democrat, recognized that racism is offensive and nasty in nature and showed it in its true light in Blazing Saddles. As a result, the film does more to ridicule racism and bigotry than most serious "message films" on the same subject ever could.

Unfortunately, the corporate suits who now run the big studios are more worried about image and profits than producing quality movies. As long as a film offends as few people as possible and appeals to as many members of the general public as possible (preferably between the ages of 18 and 35), the executives like it -even if the film has no originality or artistic merit at all. As a result, films like Blazing Saddles and TV shows like All in the Family are taboo these days. Hollywood has lost a lot of daring and courage since 1974. See Blazing Saddles and you will realize just how much.

Yes, I am an early adopter and this was the second HD-DVD I purchased. I show this to my friends, including those with HDTV from either cable or a dish, and they are VERY impressed. This movie looks fantastic. The colors are spot on and the level of sharpness is top notch. This release showcases an excellent video transfer of this movie. Regardless of whether or not Mel's humor is to your liking, this is one of the finest HD DVDs currently on the market

It is one of those comedies that you either like or hate. I liked it, I think that too many people take themselves so seriously. Blazing saddles gives a relief to that narrow type of outlook. I think that if you just accept it as a comedy, and don't try to make it more than it is. It's a comedy, and plain and simple a very good one. It a parody on everything that people look for to take an issue on. Lighten up ,and just enjoy.

This was definitely Mel Brook's crowning achievement. Unfortunately you could never release a movie like this today in our "politically correct" environment. Although Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder were terrific (these are common-clave people. You know, MORONS!), it is the supporting cast that truly made this the all-time classic it is today. Slim Pickens first line in the movie is unforgettable, Harvey Korman's hilarious bad guy (that's HEDLEY!), Madeline Kahn's deadpan impersonation of Marlene Dietrich, and Alex Karras as dimwitted Mongo all contribute to the nonstop hijinks. All are hilarious and each of them steals the show at some point in the film. That part where Mongo punches out the horse is a classic clip. One terrific character in the film not mentioned in other reviews here is frontier gibberish-uttering Gabby Johnson, a dead-on spoof of Gabby Hayes, who appeared in pretty much every Western film from the turn of the last century up through the Roy Rogers era. But the true gift of this film is that every kind of humor is used, from subtle situational humor to in-your-face slapstick comedy. Truly a funny movie that is appreciated by several generations today and will continue to be so in the future.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (Unrated) (2004)

I guess my husband and I just don't have the sophistication needed to appreciate "films," because this movie is just our type! We actually had to stop the DVD a couple of times to compose ourselves. My stomach hurt so much from the wrench-throwing and car-dodging scenes. I know it's stupid, but it totally cracked us up! If you want to watch something that requires no thinking but entertains you to the max, give this one a try.

"This is where dodgeball was invented....by opium addicted chinamen." This movie is perfect. It was never meant to be some critically acclaimed opus....actually, the more I know about most critics the less I care what they think but this movie is a perfect 90 minute smilefest with wonderfully warm performances by absolutely everyone in this film. From the two main stars all the way down to Chuck Norris.

I absolutely love everything about this film. They actually have a guy who actually thinks he's a pirate. Justin Long says "no doy" and did that guy by the jukebox get killed by a dodgeball? The direction is spot on, the writing is fantastic and everyone on the screen is absolutely the best person I can imagine for their respective roles. Also, there is something so funny about a rhino-skin playground ball smacking someone in the chops. I could never grow tired of watching this film. It will put you in a good mood....isn't that what entertainment is about?

Dodgeball is one of the greatest movies ever made. The movie is about Vince Vaughn leading a group of misfits to win a Dodgeball tournment to save his gym. The movie is funny from the beginning to the end. Ben Stiller plays a great villian, White Goodman a sucessful gym owner who uses a whole bunch of funny and stupid sayings to every phrase. Rip Torn does a great job as Patches O'Houllahan, the Average Joes dodgeball coach who says the now classic line "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball". Also you can't forget Christine Taylor and Stephon Roots great performances and my favorite in the movie Steve The Pirate.

My wife and I saw this on opening night and laughed ourselves silly the whole time. The comedy here takes all forms from subtle, to slapstick, to sexual references. The plot is standard small guy vs. big guy, but is very rewarding nonetheless.

Ben Stiller plays a fitness club owner who wants to buy out his neighbor's club. In response, Vince Vaughan's character is about to fold but gets together with some of his friends (one of whom is a pirate, who is absolutely hilarious the whole time) and enter a dodgeball competition. The rest is somewhat predictable but hilarious anyway. This movie is not about plot, it's about laughs, and luckily there are more than enough to last.

If you liked Dumb & Dumber, Pet Detective, etc. then get this DVD. You'll be laughing for days.

Really..that's it..VERY basic, no need for thought if you're watching this movie..seriously...You have a great cast of comedic actors portraying funny characters...some good physical comedy as well..Stephen Root's character of Gordon is great! Plus Steve the Pirate..Steve the Pirate? Yea..Steve the Pirate!! cmon..Just the name of that character alone rules!!(and the character himself is pretty damn good) Throw in Rip Torn as Patches O Hoolahan, and Hank Azaria playing a younger Patches (in a wonderful B&W instructinoal video from the 1950's telling Timmy to take a break from that fine lead based paint to learn the wonderful game of Dodgeball) and you got soem serious laughs....and remember..this movie IS stupid and that's the whole point..go with it!!
