Gunless (2010)

GunlessOh those kooky Canadians. Leave it to them to come up with this way out of left field movie. I suppose this sort of "fish out of water" thing has been done before, but this is so lively and fresh it just plain feels brand new.

Here's the scoop. Paul Gross, after dodging a hanging, finds himself in some bust-out Canadian town. He's on his horse, but he's been shot in the butt, rolled around in pig doo-doo and tied up. A long time bounty hunter/adversary is on his tail as he finds himself with an odd assortment of towns people who he must stay with (for at least a while) before he can get back on his horse and ride. It's that "at least a while" part that ends up messing with his head.

This movie is a real hoot. It's peppered with an oddball bunch of characters and somehow the goofy plot line makes its own kind of sense. They're such a crazy bunch they create a good juxtaposition to Gross's character. Yes he's killed men. Many men. But he's not a bad guy. His sense of right and wrong just somehow got out of hand. Now he meets a girl to whom he's indebted and he starts to realize that the constant running, and his sense of justice, might not be the best way to live. It almost plays out out like an episode of the "Andy Griffith Show."

It's set in a sparse part of Canada in a small town so the budget must have been manageable. But it doesn't look cheap. It's shot well and all the actors, even the secondary ones, do a really good job. You love these people and want to be with them. The music is good as well. There are a couple of quirky, tongue in cheek, tunes that help keep things light. This seems to be taking place in the late 19th century, but the language and many of the sensibilities are strictly "now." I don't know squat about Paul Gross but he handles his role extremely well. He's created a very memorable character. He reminds me a great deal of Josh Brolin. Sienna Guillroy is the love interest and she's quite fetching. These two make a fine pair.

I cannot say enough about this movie. There is no wasted time here. It moves at a decent clip and will not test your sense of time. It's as entertaining as a movie can be and it has a good heart without being cheezy. I had the time of my life watching it and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

I watched this on Netflix the other day and was not expecting much from it... I am happy to say that it caught me off guard. There was a great blend of action, humor, and plot (something that seems to be missing from today movies). I am adding this to my wish list!

Not at the farcial level of Mel Brooke's "Blazing Saddles", but full of tongue in cheek, and slapstick humor plus winking, cultural commentary, Gunless is a lot of fun!

Paul Gross(quite well known in Canada, I remember him from the "Red Green Show") plays a, set in his ways, American gunslinger that flees into a bucolic, Canadian town being chased by, ever getting nearer, bounty hunters. He gets in a huff with the local, giant of a man, blacksmith and determines to have it out with him if, and a big if, he can find a working six shooter for the showdown.

He takes a job, a trade off, put up a windmill for a gun, with a pretty but struggling rancher, Sienna Guillory("Inkhart", "Resident Evil"). The townfold are quirky and charming and with the woman do there best to distract him from his plan.

It's well shot and scripted, nice scenery, and there's enough seriousness to it to keep it more in reality than just being a constant joke; moreover, the hero and heroine provide a sweet, developing, but at odds, romance. My wife won't watch a western unless there's some hint of romance or at least a woman in it.

It's not quite full family fare: the baddies shoot a dog, threaten townfolk, attempt a hanging, but overall, the violence is controlled and made fun of, the language, except for the outtakes, minimum; there's no nudity or sex, one implied encounter, and all things work out for the best with a moral about living peacefully.

Summary, a feel good movie, an unusual, comedic western, that also pokes light fun at cultural differences between US and Canada.

I bought Gunless because I like Paul Gross' work and I wanted to see his new movie. It didn't disappoint. Gunless has a very funny premise: Injured American gunfighter on the run arrives in a Canadian border town, challenges the blacksmith to a gun duel, discovers that there are no working pistols in the town, and has to wait around for days for parts to repair the only pistol before he can kill the poor man. It's a great twist on a basic Western movie plot. Paul Gross does a very good job as The Montana Kid. He has excellent comedic timing and plays the character as a decent, too serious, frustrated man who has lost his way. There is a sweet romance, but not too much to turn off the guys in the audience. Sienna Guillory is a wonderful foil for Gross' comedy and, along with the rest of the ensemble, projects an innocent inability to understand this American's need for dueling and revenge. The actors all have a wonderful talent for comedy, the Alberta setting is gorgeous, and the ending is very satisfactory. This movie doesn't pretend to be great art, but it's a whole lot of fun. I highly recommend it. (By the way, I understand that this may be the only Canadian Western in existence. It has an all Canadian cast, I think, and you can tell they had fun making.)

This movie is a favorite now. It is funny and has a good message. Mostly though, it is not something I have to work at watching. I don't need to pick it apart or work hard to find some hidden dramatic meaning. It's purely entertaining, which is what I generally like in movies. The characters and the actors who play them are great diverse in personality. Melodie Choi is just about the cutest kid I've ever seen in a movie and a good actor as well. And Paul Gross -well aside from the good acting, has a voice that is perfect for the character. A few familiar faces are in this movie, but mostly actors who are relatively new to movies and/or not usually seen in the US movie market. The only negative thing I can say about it is the language in the outtakes during the end credits. Otherwise it couldn't be better. It's good fun and I highly recommend it to just about anyone. Paul Gross's character is a gunslinger and does talk about the eleven people he's killed, so parents might want to monitor that and "guide" any young children. I, personally, would have no problem allowing younger kids to watch this, with that guidance.

Mars Attacks! (2010)

Mars Attacks!Hollywood has made movies from books, TV shows, even other movies. However, "Mars Attacks" may be the first time a movie was made from a trading card.

Back in the late 1960s, Topps Cards created a line of Mars Attacks trading cards. However, these cards were pulled off the shelves after only a few months because the aliens depicted on them were considered to be too gruesome. My, how times have changed.

Director Tim Burton has taken those old trading cards and recreated them into this Sci-Fi B-movie throwback. In the process, he has created a movie that is pure, guiltless fun.

"Mars Attacks" also benefits from an all-star cast, including Jack Nicholson (in a dual-role), Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Short, Danny Devito, Glenn Close, Natalie Portman, Tom Jones, Annette Bening, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, and many others. The fact that you get to watch the aliens disentegrate (and otherwise kill) many of these stars only adds to the fun. Unfortunately, Tom Jones wasn't one of those unlucky stars. Maybe someday a sequel will be made that will rectify that. :)

Oh yeah........ did I happen to mention that Congress gets vaporized? This proves that the Martians aren't all bad!

The DVD comes with many extras, including quite a few production notes that helps you to understand how the movie came to be. This is one movie that you will want to see over and over again (especially anytime that Congress is getting on your nerves).

Tim Burton outdoes himself with this silly, but funny, spoof of 1950s flying saucer/alien invasion movies. It is absolutely zany and quite funny. There is also nothing politically correct about it, as there are no sacred cows. The film is totally irreverent of American culture and icons. Everything and everyone is fair game.

Martians have come to Earth, and they do not come in peace. Diabolical and deadly, they are bent on wreaking havoc wherever they go with their death ray guns, which serve to incinerate living beings. These bulbous headed martians with their own brand of deadly humour are hell bent on destroying Earth, while laughing and cackling maniacally.

The special effects are meant to to be reminiscent of those found in 1950s UFO flicks and in this it certainly succeeds. The cast is stellar with Jack Nicholson playing dual roles, that of President James Dale and that of entrepreneur Art Dale. Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger, Jim Brown, Natalie Portman, Sylvia Sydney, Paul Winfield, Pam Grier, Lisa Marie, Christine Applegate, Lukas Haas, and Tom Jones round out the star studded cast. With tongue in cheek performances, the viewer is bound to get a good laugh out of this film.

Having spent an hour or so reading every review of this movie on the site, I have come to the conclusion that most of the people who did not like it, were simply not bright enough to "get it". Most of the humor in this movie is sophisticated satire and irony. i.e. you need a brain to understand what the joke is. Unfortunately it seems that that leaves about 70% of the population out in the cold sort of speak.

Also, a lot of the reviewers here trash the acting and imply that the big name actors were "only in it for the money", yet are unaware of the fact that most of those "big stars" clamored to be in this movie at lower pay scales than they are used to. Then they go on about how 2 dimensional or "broad" the acting is. Well, ..Duhhh! It's a cartoonish satirical comedy based on a series of bubblegum cards. It's *meant* to be that way.

Finaly, a lot of those who hate this movie compare it unfavorably to (their favorites), ID4 or Armageddon or some such trash as that.

Nuff said.

There is nothing serious about this film. It is satire all the way and it is very good satire which takes potshots at all sorts of institutions.

The story is as simple as an old B/W science fiction movie. Earth is being invaded by Martians with superior techology and little reguard for eathlings. Instead of being an "end of the world" type picture, however, it is comedy. It is comdedic because there is a grain of truth in the elements used for the comedy:

The President is worried more about poll numbers on reactions to the Martians than about invasion.

The first lady is worried more about interior decorating than advancing ray guns.

The egghead professor manages to be wrong about just about everything he speaks of.

Reporters are shallow and vain.

The military just wants to play with its toys.

Bad music can be a deadly influence.

New Age people haven't a clue as to the real world.

Teenagers often have a better handle on things than the grownups.

It's enough to make you root for the Martians. This one is fun, irreverant and a feast of oddball ideas. What else could be expected from Tim Burton?

The first time I saw this movie, I thought it was a big dissappointment. Then I started to think about it. Usually, when I dislike something for no reason that I can really put my finger on, it is because it has challenged my expectations in some way. For this reason, I like to re-examine my feelings about those things. And often, after reflection, I realize what it is that disturbs me, and I realize why the thing that I hate addresses that, and often it makes me enjoy the thing I "Hated" more.

This movie is like that. One of the things that bothered me so much was the lack of reason for the alien attack, and their resulting brutality. A little after I watched the movie, I found out why this is so, while reading a book "Lies My Teacher Told Me," which related the following tale concerning Columbus:

In 1492, Colomubus landed in what is now the Dominican Republic. He got off of the boat, and read a short proclimation that said (essentially,) "I am taking this place over, you must now immediatly renounce your pagan gods, convert to Christianity, claim Isabella of Spain as your ruler, or I will make you slaves, and you will work until you die, and I will not be held responsible for your souls." Columbus read this proclimation in Spanish, which of course, none of the native people of the Dominican Republic could understand. They greeted him with a huge party, and Columbus proceeded to decimate the natives. The Spaniards forced the Indians to work, and rode on their backs rather than walk from place to place. Does this not strike you as ridiculous? The same kind of mindless destruction for the sake of destruction that the movie portrays?

What disturbed me about the movie was it's quiet censure of our society, our modern world, our own arrogance. In this movie we get our comeuppance, and it is delivered with the same heartless passion that our uncivilized ancestors imposed on the indigenous populations. There is no why or how, there is only the relentless onslaught of a technologically superior race that finds glee in our destruction, who no doubt, intend to usurp our world.

In the War of the Worlds, we are saved by Influenza, in real life, Influenza and small pox, brought by Euroopeans, decimated indigenous populations. Wells original parallel was intended to be a subtle irony, a tribute to our tiniest, and most unobtrusive weapon.

Here we are saved by Slim Whitman's "Indian Love Call," an outrageous twist, but not one without it's irony. Whitman wrote the song as an appeal to the romanticization of the American Indian that occurred in the late 50's. It bears no real ties to native american lore or tradition, other than it's name. It is a romantic view of a past that never happened, our "plasticization" of the very people we've killed. Isn't it odd that we would be saved by a cheesy lounge song written about a people we killed with smallpox and war, while we are being decimated with no hope of survival, in much the same manner? Its doubly ironic that something so insidious, both in sound, and concept, should turn out to be invariably fatal to our invaders. Our bad taste killed them.

I might suggest to those that are easily angered when their expectations of an "Independance Day" style romp are foiled, that they examine their dissappointment and ask themselves, "why did this bother me so much?" When you do, you'll often find that you are being challenged to think or look at a thing in another light by your brain, which is often smarter than you might think.

Surfer, Dude (2008)

Surfer, DudeDudes, comparisons to Spicoli aside, this is a unique little comedy about the religious philosophy of Wake 'n' Bake Surf Culture. Matthew McConaughey is absolutely brilliant as So Cal surf legend Steve Addington. A modern day stoner Buddha seeking enlightenment thru the meditation of carving waves, riding girls, and sipping doobage. McConaughey walks thru almost the entire film shirtless and barefooted, wearing only a pair of baggies. Even when McConaughey is just walking down the street, he's surfing. He's like a fish out of water, brah. His swaggering swaybacked bowlegged performance is fully righteous. And, totally funny. (Not quite, but almost as good as his role as Wooderson in DAZED AND CONFUSED.) His performance is DEAD ON TUBULAR. (Ladies, you're gonna want his bod.)

Obviously, this film is not for everyone. But, this short comedy is rife with religious and aesthetic symbolism. I was stoked by its heaviosity, brah.

Like an aesthetic Christ, The Addman is a free spirited surfer, baptized in The Ocean, who cares nothing for the material world of money and fame. He seeks only religious adoration and worship of God thru The Living Wave, The Sacramental smoke of The Wisdom Weed, and The Unification of The One Body thru sexual concourse with chicks. Upon returning home after being away from Cali on a surfing sojourn, Addington is tempted by The Devil into a starring role on a TV Reality Show about surfers, ala Big Brother, and a chance to profit from his digital image in a virtual reality game called FREE SURFER. Representing Lucifer, ex-surfer and evil TV producer Eddie Zarno (Jeffrey Nordling) entices The Addman with a totally humongous bag of sheckles. "We own his image. And his image is reality." But, Addington is hip to the fact that the illusion is transitory and meaningless. While contemplating a monitor of virtual tropical fish in Zarno's beachhouse studio, The Addman poses this saltwatery Zen koan: "Something's wrong with these fish, dude." No way, brah. The Addman refuses to sell his soul to The Devil for material gain. "I'm not some _ssclown in a greenroom. I'm a surfer, dude."

For what does it profit a dude to gain the world, and lose his wave?

The Devil metaphorically breaks The Addman's skeg, and there is a sudden drought of waves. "Something's bogus, dudes." Totally like Christ, The Addman wanders the desert beaches in prayer, for MORE than 40 days and nights, fasting from the pleasures of The Scented Lotus Blossom and the sustenance of The Good Green, until God's return on The Waves of Everlasting Life Giving Water. It's The Addman's Dark Night of The Soul, man. BRAH?! Why hast thou forsaken, dude?!

Willie Nelson as John The Baptist, who passes his shepherd's rod to The Addman. Will Addington become The Good Shepherd of The Goats? Yay, though I surf through the barrel of the shadow of death I will fear no shark infested waters, for thy rod and thy board they confront me, dude.

Who else but Woody Harrelson, as The Apostle Peter and The Addman's dope smoking manager? "We got financial worries, brah."

Will the Addman sacrifice himself on The Cross of Virtual Surfboard to save the souls of his brahs? You grommets should ask yourselves only one question: WHAT WOULD THE ADDMAN DO?

A perfect Double Feature alongside Swayze's POINT BREAK. Funny, symbolic, and full of topless chicks and bud. (Bitchin'!) This film is defintely worth the rent for Matthew McConaughey's performance, and for all the stoner surfer aesthetes out there. It's like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST for surfers, dude. Hodads, landlubbers, and non-philosophers might want to avoid this one.

"Love and waves, that's what we need in these dark days."

Whoa!

I see so many reviews about this that say it isn't surfing. How many of you have hung at the beach and surfed every day? I know lots of surfers who are just like Addington. If you hang at one break long enough you'll find them and generally it doesn't take long! I enjoyed this movie cause it was about a surfer who finds his "world" under attack and has to deal with the greatest hardship (no waves) that could happen. Have you ever lived through a wave drought? Usually won't last longer than a week but it sucks none the less! It didn't have slash and burn hardcore surf footage: so what? It's not a surf video. Having Keith Malloy double as Addington in the water was good style. He rips on a longboard. I rate this highly because it's an accurate depiction of what some surfers are like and how they are focused on nothing but waves!

This is a simple movie, not made to be dissected, competed with or watched for the plot or action. rather, the film provides a taste of SoCal that is partly mythical and partly disappearing and for that alone i loved it.

there's something wholesome about the film, left me feeling good which does not happen too often for me, and almost never with the large commercial blockbusters. to see Willie Nelson's smile, that alone was worth waiting for. mcConnaughey does a good job, as does Harrelson & most of the crew.

in other words, this is not about surfing. it is about friendship and about knowing what you love.

This movie is a complete waste of time. I happen to be a surfer, which is what got me interested to rent this movie in the first place. Everything about this movie is unbelievable. The plot sucks, and the production seems like you are watching a low-budget movie from the 80's. Almost like the intro to some 80's porn. It is a complete insult to what surf culture is about. We are not all stoners!

"Weird Al" Yankovic Live! - The Alpocalypse Tour (2011)

'Weird Al' Yankovic Live! - The Alpocalypse TourI saw Al in concert in Florida a few days ago and it was fantastic. However, I wasn't that pleased with this DVD.

I feel that I would have enjoyed it more if it had an 'in-the-audience' view. The close-ups were okay, but I wanted to feel like I was sitting right there (but at a high-enough level to not have anybody in the way, of course). I'd wanted to have seen the audience more and be enough rows back to get Al...the band...and the screens that were above and behind the stage all at the same time. Of course, when Al went into the audience, that would have been a time to follow him closer.

Frank's 2000-inch TV was played during the concert I saw, but it wasn't in this lineup. However, it is in an extra on the DVD. He doesn't do every tune in each concert but, for the most part, they are all identical.

A couple differences I recall from the concert:

on the DVD, you'll see two effeminate guy-dancers during the "Perform This Way" number; they were not in the concert I was at

I remember two moments when Al was presenting the drummer, John "Bermuda" Schwartz, with a drum solo. Each time, it was just a second or two of a 'tune' and it was funny to see him all proud of his achievement. It was silly and the audience was all ready for a big solo that never happened. This isn't on the DVD. UPDATE: it's in one of the extra live performances

I was really hoping that, with the DVD, it wouldn't just be one song after another. I saw a cut-down, one-hour version of the concert on Comedy Central. During the concert, there were a lot of costume changes throughout the performance. During those moments, there were great "Al TV" segments and other bits. For example, he had mock interviews with Robert Plant or Eminem and they were great. Also, there were silly parts from his "UHF" movie...other flicks (like from the first "Naked Gun" movie)...and mentions of him in various TV shows. To me, these were some of the best parts of the concert that had me cracking up and I was so disappointed they were not on the DVD. I wanted to see the full thing!

Ultimately, I liked seeing the concert on DVD, of course -but it turned out that it was the stuff in between the songs that had a major impact on the enjoyment. It got me to laugh a lot, and the audience was cracking-up as well. This also built up anticipation for the next song.

This DVD loses a star for me. Al's great and it's good to have, but I recommend seeing this truly live for a better experience.

I saw Weird Al in Denver on 9/20 and the show was great. This was the fourth time I have seen him live, and while each show has been magnificent, no two shows are identical. I watched the Comedy Central "Alpocalypse" special and it featured a few songs that he did not perform in Denver. He interacts with the audience and makes you part of the show (literally). My girlfriend was not familiar with his work beyond "Eat It" and "Fat", but she enjoyed the show and laughed out loud through "CNR". Weird Al is terribly under appreciated, and once you get it, you will be hooked for life!

"'Weird Al' Yankovic Live! The Alpocalypse Tour," blu-ray is an unusual comedic show done in parody in regard to song and performance. Sometimes, I know what Mr. Yankovic is parodying, but other times, I have to think, "what is he imitating and making of?". I recognize the melodies, but not the original songs.

There is an option to display all the lyrics to the songs on the featured concert. The lyrics are well thought out and finely composed. Some of the lyrics may be mildly offensive to a few people and the act is, occasionally, a little lewd, but within the limits of most people. Some may not like the one scene where he dances suggestively in front of a lady. It has a Canadian Home Video Rating of PG (which is the same as a PG rating in the United States). There is no foul language. I found much of the show amusing and entertaining.

The show includes a large backscreen, showing cartoons and videos.

I especially like the "Polka Face" mash, "Canadian Idiot" which parodies Green Day's "American Idiot," the "Medley" mix, and "Amish Paradise". I would like to point out that Mr. Yankovic actually has a fine voice and that his acts are carefully crafted with skill and talent.

I had the pleasure of seeing "Weird" Al Yankovic when he was on "The Alpocalypse Tour" in 2011 and was wondering why he didn't have a dvd of this tour. I'm glad he finally made one and it doesn't get any weirder than Al. Although singing "Canadian Idiot" was concidered a compliment for the folks there in Canada, (which the concert was filmed), but that's what Yankovic does. When he parody's your song, he's a fan and is paying you a compliment in his "weird" way. If you are a fan then you will really like this show. He not only does his major hits like "Eat It", and "Fat" but his new hit singles "Party In The CIA" and "Perform This Way", which he appears on stage in a peacock costume, poking fun at Gaga in a way. Each song has a costume change that goes with the theme of that song and it makes it a lot more fun to watch too. Special features are really hillarious to watch, especially his youtube videos and unseen concert footage. But if you are a Yankovic fan then you will really like this dvd!

Nature Calls (2012)

Nature CallsThis film raises serious questions, such as should I give my copy away or throw it out? Randy (Patton Oswalt) is determined to take a group of boys on a scouting trip. He persuades the kids with a corny scout video to the dismay of everyone and absconds with the kids to the woods. The film had potential, but didn't know which way to go. The frequency of crude humor prevented it from being a kid's film. The crude juvenile humor prevented it from becoming a good adult film. It should have appeal to an adolescent crowd, one too young for the rating.

The characters are poorly developed. Leonard, whose mother coddles him, is not utilized. Kent's attraction for the older women could have been made more for an adult audience, as long as the film is going that way. What was with the naked girl on the motorcycle? The opening scene was idiotic as scout masters take on the responsibility of informing a child his father has died.

Are there funny scenes? Yes. In spite of all the crudeness, there were scenes which made me laugh, but too few to put up with a poorly written production. At one point I thought they were going to mimic "Lord of the Flies," but that fell flat. I think a LOTF spoof would have worked better i.e. make Leonard a fat kid they call "Piggy" etc.

Watch at you own risk.

Parental Guide: Frequent F-bombs in front of children. Nudity (Jill de Jong model for Tomb Raider)

Movie lacked any real funny moments. The idea was a bit cool though. If this idea of the old scout master dieing in the woods and his son taking over was done in a serious note could be great. But a movie with a bunch of kids and couple guys just swearing the whole time at nothing, quite terrible.
