National Lampoon's Animal House (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (1978)

National Lampoon's Animal HouseBuyer Take Note! I've been a fan of this movie since its theatrical release in 1978 and give the movie five stars. However, National Lampoon's Animal House 30th Anniversary Edition (30AE) is simply a re-release, and the third dip on DVD, has nothing significantly new to offer from the previous release and my rating is for the 30AE release. The two documentary extras have been carried over from the 2003 Double Secret Probation Edition (DSPE). It does return the trailer from the 1998 Collector's Edition (CE). New to this release is a lame Scene It? game. Missing are two extras from the DSPE, the Shout music video and a text commentary of anecdotes. One improvement from the DSPE is that on the 30AE you are not forced to watch movie trailers before you get to the main menu. Universal appears to be repackaging this film every five years. The 30AE should have delivered all the previous extras and an audio commentary by the director, writers and cast. The trailer is amusing, but is it worth buying the 30AE if you already own the DSPE? The deciding factors appear to be whether you want the text commentary and everything on one disc or the trailer and the same contents spread over two discs. I would say skip the 30AE if you already own the DSPE. Maybe in five years we will get an ultimate edition of this movie on whatever video format is in use then. Universal has decided to shove advertisements down our throats. Viewers CANNOT skip past the advertisements. You cannot skip to the DVD menu/title, nor can you jump to any chapters until the long previews have been completed. This is insane. Boycott this DVD.

Buy National Lampoon's Animal House (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (1978) Now

First off, I love Animal House. There is no reason for me to even explain the movie. Animal House and the Blues Brothers are the best Landis/Belushi movies of all time. There are some special features such as a "Where are they now" featurette featuring many of the original cast (except Belushi of course). But, even those features and this excellent movie cannot save this DVD from a one-star rating.

As others have stated, not being able to skip the adds at the beginning of the DVD is a poor marketing decision. They did the same with American Wedding, but at least, I can hit stop on my DVD player to stop the DVD, whereas with Animal House, I have to turn off my DVD player. Very poor.

I have already written to Universal Studios about my displeasure with their decision for both Animal House and American Wedding and have informed them that unless they change their tactics, I refuse to purchase another Universal DVD release and that hundreds of other purchasers feel the same, based on reviews at Amazon.com.

Stay away from this if you absolutely feel that not being able to skip the adds is wrong. Otherwise, be prepared to sit through 5+ minutes of commercials for other Universal movies. Your best bet is to go make some popcorn and come back. At that point, it should be done and then you can enjoy this excellent, funny parody of life in a frat house in the late 60s.

Toga! Toga! Toga!

First of all I did not buy the Double Secret Probation Edition DVD of this film because #1 it had nothing more on it than my 1998 Collectors Edition had and #2 my 1998 version has the Original movie Soundtrack including the dont know much about history song when Bluto is having his Lunch, so i will keep my edition, if you are a purest and want the very best version (on dvd) then try to find the out of Production 1998 dvd, you will have to pay a higher price but it is worth it to get the original movie as it was meant to be, if you don't care about the originality of the music then buy the new version, it is cheap and easy to find.

Want National Lampoon's Animal House (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (1978) Discount?

You absolutely must refuse to buy this edition because it is front-loaded with 10 minutes of unskippable commercials. And you must post horrible reviews here for that very reason, as well as complain in writing to Universal. Otherwise your apathy will allow Universal to continue putting this spam in front of all its releases, and the other studios will follow. (And while I'm on this subject, please don't be afraid to boo the product/service commercials they show at the beginnings of movies in theatres. Let management know that you're outraged.)

Animal House is definitely a classic, although I agree with those who've commented that it hasn't spawned anything particularly positive. Still, the movie on it's own terms is a riot, and I'd rate it about four and a half stars. So buy a used copy of the out-of-print original Collector's Edition (with the metallic blue cover) either here on Amazon or on eBay. But this particular version needs to be buried forever with the ground salted above it.

Sex and the City: The Movie (2008)

Sex and the City: The MovieI was initially against a continuation of the runaway hit HBO series, Sex and the City The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset) I felt that the season finale was perfection and any other stories to be told would only spoil it. Once the movie started though, I was drawn in and it felt great to see these "familiar" friends again: Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Carrie and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) decide to tie the knot, and the movie revolves around how their relationship takes the next step. Meanwhile, Miranda and Steve are dealing with Miranda neglecting their relationship. Samantha has become an L.A. housewife and is none too happy about continually playing second-fiddle to Smith. Charlotte...well, she is just living a perfect life with adopted daughter and husband Harry. The movie continues the vision of the series: insightful, witty, and extremely well written. Jennifer Hudson has a nice supporting role as Carrie's personal assistant; she brings sass to her role and definitely leaves the door open for a possibility of a "next generation" of young hopeful women to hit New York City. My gripes? I felt that fashion played too much of a role; in the TV series, it was a nice semi-silent costar. In the movie, it was a little "in your face" and over the top. I also felt that Samantha's storyline seemed a little out of character and contrived; her supposed weight gain was minimal and for her to ever stay in the background for Smith just seemed out of step. Many original cast members returned for the movie, although some were absolutely wasted as they were relegated to non-speaking cameos. For some reason, Stanford & Anthony are now close friends (possibly even more), which is totally against how they were in the series. Obviously, much has happened in the years since we last saw them; it left a feeling that an explanation scene or two must be on the cutting room floor. Removal of some of the fashion stuff and putting back in more of the witty dialogue would have benefitted the movie greatly.Speaking of putting back in...yes, this version is an extended cut. Many scenes have been lengthened, and it definitely helps give the movie a more finished feel and explains much that I thought was missing in the theater. Extra fun is Carrie's fashion show in her apartment, where she tries on many of her 1980's bad outfits for the girls, who rate whether the outfits should be kept or tossed. In the extended cut, ALL the girls (including Charlotte's daughter Lily) join in the fun and try on the outfits. This is especially wonderful as SJP does not necessarily deserve the lion's share of credit for this successful series; it is definitely an ensemble cast. The restored Halloween scene of Harry as The Addams Family's Uncle Fester is not to be missed, either!

I saw it twice on the big screen thoroughly entertained both times, and hoping for a follow-up!

Bonus features for 2-Disc Special Edition DVD:

DISC 1:

* Audio Commentary by director Michael Patrick King

DISC 2:

* Additional Scenes restored to the actual movie as well as a separate section with deleted scenes that feature commentary by Michael Patrick King as to why they were cut.

* A Conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King: a nice look at the movie with SJP and MPK, giving further insight into many of the choices made for the movie.

* The Fabulous Fashion of Sex And The City: Excellent featurette with Patricia Fields discussing how she finds all the different fashions for the character. Not one to get caught up in labels, her talent is for mixing up totally different looks and creating magic.

* Fergie in the Studio: watch a hit in the making as the singer records Labels or Love for the movie soundtrack, interspersed with Fergie fawning over the original TV series. A short featurette but cool to watch nonetheless.

UPDATE: You might want to hold off on buying this version, as an Sex and the City: The Movie (Ultimate Collector's Edition) with approximately 4 more hours of extras is due to be released on December; so far, no Blu-ray version of this set has been announced.

If I had known the series was as enjoyable as the movie, I would never have missed a single episode, but that's the beauty of a favorite series on DVD. "Sex and the City--The Movie" was such a fabulous fantasy with such a great ending that I must see the series now.

Four women who actually care about each other--now there's a new concept, but they actually do, genuinely, sincerely, and apparently for all time. Other reviewers have called the wedding dress a fifth character; some say New York or Manhattan itself. I say the fifth character has to be all those clothes Carrie wears, each dress costing hundreds, I'm sure. As a writer, she could afford such clothes? Wow.

However, anyone with eyes must include Chris Noth's Big character. He is such a hunk! A major element that stands out for me in this movie is the respectful attitudes Carrie and Big show for each other. They are attentive, caring, and considerate (except for --well, I best not say). Anyone can make a mistake.

A huge theme is forgiveness as it plays out in both Carrie's relationship and Miranda's, and in their mutual friendship. Meanwhile, Samantha learns that she is not being true to herself, an issue I just don't want to deal with. I have no idea if she is right or wrong concerning her decision.

The only character without problems is Charlotte, who does seem to lead a charmed life.

Overall, this is a story that reflects real life: problems in love, friendship, living arrangements, doing the right thing, and taking chances. That this movie ends well perhaps bodes well for the viewer, too. You think? Maybe...

SEX AND THE CITY THE MOVIE SPECIAL EDITION won't satisfy all of the fans of the show. You either love it or hate it. Sure the movie had its pitfalls like the "will Big & Carrie marry or is this the final break-up?" etc., but for the most part it gives us fans one last hurrah. I guess the movie could be seen as the cherry on top of an already luscious and decadent sundae.

Did we need the movie? Probably not, but I'm glad the powers that be decided to make it. And just like that cherry, the movie is just a lovely garnish that topped off a really wonderful television series.

Here's what's on the SATCTM DVD Sp. Ed.:

DVD #1

***Extended Version of the movie--(Run Time 151 mins)--I think the extended scenes show Carrie, Charlotte, Harry and Lily on Halloween (I don't remember that scene in the movie)

***Commentary By Director/Writer Michael Patrick King

DVD #2

***Digital Copy of the Movie--To play on computer/ipods etc., w/out dvd

***Conversation W/Sarah Jessica Parker & MPK--24-minute featurette with director MPK and star SJP discussing various scenes

***The Fabulous Fashion Of SATC--18-minute Featurette with Costume Designer Patricia Field(who should win the Academy Award)--takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes of the fab wardrobe, shoes, bags and jewelery used in the movie and includes shots of the cast while filming

***Additional Scenes w/director commentary--Four additional scenes not in the movie or extended cut and MPK discusses each one

***Additional Scenes w/out commentary--the four above scenes w/out MPK

***Fergie In The Studio--Two-minute thing w/Fergie and the recording session for the song "Labels or Love" for the soundtrack

All in all a pretty good DVD set for fans of both the show and the movie. Seeing it the second time around, I do see things that I missed when seeing it in the theater. One of them being the over riding theme of "Cinderella." But, the friendship between the four women is still what makes SATC/SATCTM so special...at least to me.

While it is -frustratingly -the third in a "triple dip" (following the theatrical DVD and extended cut DVD), if you are a "Sex and the City" collector / completist, then you cannot be without this set.

Discs One and Two are essentially the same as they are on the Extended Cut DVD release -BUT!! -Disc Two is *expanded* with three more featurettes that were obviously held back from the previous release so hard-core fans would have incentive to buy this package.

One featurette focuses on how they brought the movie to the screen, the second is about on the four leading ladies and the third is the HBO First Look program, "The Making of *Sex and the City.*"

On Disc Two of the extended cut release and this package, a conversation between Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker takes place. Disc Three features the full conversation, greatly expanded. It plays as a "video commentary" (with many split screens and zooms in and out) to the theatrical cut of the film. Disc Three also adds a feature on the DVD release party and the day Sarah Jessica Parker did the scene with all the wedding gown changes.

Disc Four is a music disc that is worth it for me because of two additions. As a major aficionado of film scores, I am excited to find Aaron Zigman's "suite" (really two pieces from the film) on the disc and a notation that his score will soon be available on CD. I am also pleased to find the "alternate" version of "Labels and Love" on the disc. This "alternate" is what plays underneath the opening of the film.

Jennifer Hudson's song is also here, as are four songs "inspired by" the movie and the Pfeifer Bros. version of the SATC theme that is featured on the first volume of the movie soundtrack.

The box, designed like the wedding invitation to beat all wedding invitations, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (only 85,000 of these things exist) and a slim hardcover book with pictures and quotes not only from the screenplay, but the "love letters from great men" referenced in the movie.

Overall, this is a FANTASTIC package both in terms of design and content.

I'm not going to review the movie, I'll leave that for everyone else. All I can say is that I am SO happy that Warner Brothers changed the digital format that comes free with their DVDs. I had bought last Harry Potter DVD for the digital version, only to discover it was not compatible with i-pods. This version is! If you are going to spend the money and want the option of it for your i-pod, get the Special Edition.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2010)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyThere's a simple reason this movie has taken so long to make, and it's this: while Douglas Adams' classic The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a hilarious book, it's a rubbish novel.

I mean that in the nicest possible way it's one of my favourite books, but it's barely a story at all more a set of dead-eye, deadpan observations on the absurdity of life, and particularly the British way of life, revolving very loosely around a chap in a dressing-gown. While that's great fodder for a comedy read, it's no basis for a coherent, 90 minute motion picture, especially one having the American market in mind.

It's a matter of record that Douglas Adams realised there was no story, but not until it was too late to fix it (about halfway through book two). From that point onwards made several attempts to pull everything back into a single coherent, archetypal story but totally failed, and in the process ruined the remaining three and a half books themselves, none of which are funny, let alone a good story.

A film-maker has a choice, therefore: stick with the material and film something which is not so much a screenplay as an extended, themed version of Saturday Night Live, or do some significant damage to the source material "zap straight off to its major data banks and reprogram it with a very large axe", if you will and make a story out of it.

The first option will in equal measure thrill and infuriate the party faithful, but bore the rest of the population; the second will most likely infuriate the party faithful, but at least has a chance with everyone else. Since the Hitch-Hiker's Guide is now twenty years old, there is probably a whole generation who, so far in their lives, have missed it altogether, so you can hardly blame director Garth Jennings for choosing option two.

What instead we should do is take our hats off to him: he's fashioned a great story but preserved surprising amounts of the source; his innovations are sympathetic and in a couple of cases (the point-of-view gun and the face-slapping devices on the Vogsphere) are a match for the original material; the wonderful production design thoroughly captures the loveable Britishness of Adams' story (the Vogons hover somewhere between the schoolmasters of `70s Pink Floyd and the sort of bureaucrats whom you might find behind the desks of some Ministry of Monty Python's devising), and on top of all that he's coaxed some wonderful performances out of the cast. Martin Freeman captures Arthur Dent's everyman perfectly and has real chemistry with Zooey Deschanel's Trillian; John Malkovich, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey and both the original Arthur Dent and Marvin from the BBC TV series make hilarious cameos, as does the smiling face of the late creator himself, Douglas Adams, as the very last shot of the movie. That was a splendid touch.

The less forgiving purists are bound to gripe about what's missing; but on the whole I'm the more forgiving sort of purist. Perhaps there is something sinister in the conspicuous omission the Babel Fish "proof" for the non-existence of God was that a Disney-required edit or just my perfectly normal paranoia? and I was a bit sad my favourite exchange in all of Douglas Adams' writing was omitted (Arthur: "It's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die from asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young." Ford: "Why? What did she say?" Arthur: "I don't know, I didn't listen"), but overall this was an extremely enjoyable, touching experience and I can't think of a better way to have rounded off an otherwise trying Thursday.

Thursdays. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Olly Buxton

Having owned the first release of this movie on DVD, when I heard it was coming out on Blu-Ray I had to pick it up; after all, this was the movie that convinced me to pick up Douglas Adams' spectacular written novels (from Hitchhiker's to Dirk Gently) and give them a read. While watching the movie in 1080i was a pleasure, I was rather disappointed to find that many of the special features found on the original disc including the absolutely brilliant interface with the interactive improbability drive that occasionally took you to an Easter Egg were stripped out of the Blu-Ray disc. I could have even dealt with the loss of the interface in exchange for the movie showcase menu that allows you to access features, select scenes, and access the setup while the movie is playing, if only they had provided all the content on the original DVD. I've experienced this now on a couple of Blu-Ray discs and I find it quite upsetting (officially entering rant territory), that despite the capacity for Blu-Ray discs to hold 80% more data than a DVD, and 40% more data than a HD disc, that companies are skimping on features and selling the discs at an inflated price. While Blu-Ray may be the superior format, it's not going to gain in market standing by the release of inferior products.

Buy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2010) Now

Thankfully, the film remains quite faithful to the spirit of Adams' book. For example, all of the Guide entries are taken verbatim from it. The massive budget results in a great looking movie that properly captures the scope and scale of the story. There is extensive use of CGI to recreate intergalactic space travel and the planet showroom inside of Magrathea (some of the film's most arresting visuals), but this is mixed with old school, reliable rubber costumes for creatures like the Vogons that gives them a texture that you just can't get with computers. This movie is light years ahead of the clunky BBC version which resembled a bad-looking episode of Dr. Who.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy may not have done well in North America because it lacked recognizable A-list movie stars (but then again, neither did the original Star Wars) with decidedly British sense of humour. Sadly, it failed to connect on a mass audience level despite a significant marketing push. Regardless, it is still an entertaining, big, splashy science fiction movie that manages to preserve the wit of Adams' book. So long now and thanks for all the fish.

"Making of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is a fairly standard making of featurette. Not surprisingly, director Garth Jennings said that the key to this movie was in the casting. So, he gathered an eclectic group of actors.

Also included is an "Additional Guide Entry" which faithfully recreates the gag from the book about man proving that God doesn't exist but then it fails to include the book's punchline in which man goes on to prove that black is white and gets killed at the next zebra crossing.

There are three deleted scenes that amount to merely extra little bits that include Ford's update entry for Earth as "Mostly harmless."

There are also two "Really Deleted Scenes" that are basically goofy outtakes of the cast hamming it up.

"Sing Along `So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" allows you to sing with the film's catchy Monty Python-esque theme song cum show tune karoake-style.

There is an audio commentary by Jennings, producer Nick Goldsmith and actors Martin Freeman and Bill Nighy. It's a fun, relaxed track as everyone enjoys themselves watching the movie.

Fans of the book will enjoy the additional commentary track with executive producer Robbie Stamp and Douglas Adams colleague Sean Solle. They talk about the movie in relation to Adams' original vision and also speak at length about the differences between the film, the video game, the radio play and the book, justifying the reasons for certain changes. Best of all, Stamp points out the little details that are buried throughout the film in this excellent track.

There is "Marvin's Hangman," that allows you to play a variation of the hangman word game but with Marvin's robot parts.

The extras included on the DVD are done in the style and tone of the movie, including a clever feature known as the "Improbability Drive" that will take you to a completely random moment in one of the extras.

Do you know someone who absolutely can NOT tell a joke? They're the person who, set up with the most perfectly hilarious joke in the world, will mangle it. Some people can "do comedy" and some people cannot. Douglas Adams certainly knew how to WRITE comedy, and all the written incarnations of "Hitchhiker's" are among the most hilarious passages of the English language.

This film, based on that brilliant writing, is like one of the world's greatest jokes, mucked up in the telling.

"Hitchhiker's" is NOT about story, and it is most certainly not about a love story. It's about attitude and a wry observation about how brainless much of the world is. This movie doesn't match the spirit of Adams' writing with two notable exceptions: Sam Rockwell "gets it" with his performance as 2-Headed, 3-armed President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox. Zaphod is the kind of character perpetually in search of his next great party. It seems that the primary benefit to being President of the Galaxy is giving him a great line to pick up girls. Bill Nighy also captures the right Adams spirit as Slartibartfast, a name you don't want to say three times fast. I give one star each for Sam and Bill.

Much of the humor of the book(s) come from asides and lines that are rendered for the benefit of the audience. Hero Arthur Dent learns the same morning first that his house is being demolished so that a bypass can be built, then that the earth is being destroyed by a Vogon Constructor Fleet so that an inter-galactic bypass can also be constructed. His friend Ford Prefect (unknown to Arthur an alien from the planet Betelgeuse) hurries Arthur off to a pub and begins explaining about how the earth is about to be destroyed.

Chapter Two ends:

"This must be Thursday," said Arthur musing to himself, sinking low over his beer, "I never could get the hang of Thursdays."

In this film Arthur neither muses nor sinks and the cleverness of Adams fine and hilarious prose gets passed by quickly as if the Mona Lisa were displayed beside the tracks of a speeding train, and the only glimpse you could get of it was as the train sped you past it.

Douglas Adams' words have ALWAYS been the "star" of Hitchhikers. That and the attitude I mentioned before could have been transformed into a serviceable film. No doubt at the urging of some Hollywood type, a love story that doesn't exist in any prior incarnation of the written word shows up in this movie and stops any momentum that might have been building dead in its tracks.

Marvin the Robot, one of the most memorable non-human characters in literary history, is given the voice of Alan Rickman, but the body of a walking trash can. Three decades after C3PO first appeared, it is inexcusable to botch Marvin the Paranoid Android.

This movie is hilarious and entertaining in a way that is not at all hilarious or entertaining.

*sigh* Now I don't know whether to look forward to "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" or not.

Once again Hollywood follows the trend of rushing out the DVD of a summer movie, only to release a "deluxe" edition right before Christmas. I can't tell you how excited I was to buy this movie until I heard that the UK is getting a deluxe 2-disc version (which looks like a copy of the Guide itself), and the US will have to wait another 3 months. Keep in mind, I LOVE this movie, it just breaks my heart that such a great movie is getting such a shoddy release. Not everyone will care.. some people just want the movie and don't care about extras, but some of us do. It's become routine that a movie comes out early summer, is released sometime in September, and released again (only better) in late November. They've done it with Hellboy, they're doing it with Sin City, and now they're doing it with this. I urge you to wait for the special edition so maybe Hollywood will stop trying to make us buy the same movie twice.

The Green Hornet (2011)

The Green HornetAs soon as I saw the ratings this movie was getting, I guessed it had probably not adhered to the expectations of comic fans and fans of the original movies or series, and a quick scan of the reviews showed me I had guessed right. Although I love superheroes and comics in general, I knew nothing about the Green Hornet when I hit the theater, and I absolutely loved it. Most of all, I loved Kato. I remember telling my friend that this sidekick finally managed to break all the stereotypes. He was no longer an asexual, lesser sucker-upper. I also know most men drool after Bruce Lee, but as a grown-up woman who never really quite managed to get into him, I have to say Jay Chou has all the charisma for which I had kept searching in Lee. This was by all means Chou's movie.

As a viewer without any canonic expectations, this movie had me laughing from beginning to end. It was a breath of fresh air and a break from a lot of superhero stereotyping. I came to Amazon quite decided to purchase it.

I would say, if you are an original fan, beware. It seems very unlikely that you will enjoy it. If you, like me, love superheroes but this is your first time meeting the Green Hornet, I'm quite sure you will love this movie. We can all go and read the seemingly darker, truer version after we fall in love with Chou and start looking out for his next movies and music releases.

This film can't decide what genre it's supposed to be. The writers spent too much time trying to make Seth Rogen funny which is wasted time because he already IS funny and not enough time writing a decent story. There's a couple of fun moments but this was not nearly as comical as the theatrical previews made it look. By the time the last 15 minutes came 'round I was watching the clock as it was dragging to the inevitable conclusion. This cast and the premise of an inept, immature buffoon stealing the lime light along with an ingenious, talented and deadly sidekick who gets no credit could have been wickedly funny. Somehow they missed the mark.

Buy The Green Hornet (2011) Now

The Green Hornet movie is one that I've been looking forward to for years. It's been rumored to be coming since the early 90's. It went through numerous incarnations that somehow didn't make it. From actors like George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg as the Hornet to Jet Li and Stephen Chow as Kato. A script was written by no less than Kevin Smith that was recently made into the first 10 issues of the Green Hornet comic book. Somewhere in there it seemed like they had the nuts and bolts of it right....and then Seth Rogen entered the picture.

Rogen is one of America's beloved buffoons. Necessary to the American psyche, buffoons have a hallowed place in cinema. From the sidekicks of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, the Durango Kid, et al to Jerry Lewis, Dick Van Dyke, and Owen Wilson, to the films that serve as a commentary on the buffoon lifestyle (Up In Smoke, Big Lebowski, Knocked Up), each of us has a buffoon we admire. Buffoons generally realize their place in the movies and are usually content to work that vein for all they can. Buffoons are typecast and (usually) should not attempt to crossover to leading man roles. Rogen has attempted that step, I believe (the script makes it hard to tell for sure), and fallen badly in his try.

The script for the Green Hornet was written by Seth Rogen. I have no doubt that he's a very smart man in his area of expertise, but, as of yet, that doesn't include action/adventure. He can't make up his mind if he wants it to be in the action genre, comedy, or thriller, and ends up failing to be any of the above. It never rises above the level of a 10 year old, resorting to violence, explosions, and gunfire in an attempt to cover its inadequacies. Even Rogen's attempts at comedy are, for the most part, unfunny. His Hornet whines and needs constant pampering. There is no attempt to be edgy, moody, or dark. You will not mistake this for The Dark Knight. The premiere of NBC's new show The Cape, seen last week and mediocre at best, was Max Allan Collins meets Raymond Chandler compared to this. Rogen is the Green Hornet in the same manner as it would have been if Benny Hill had been cast as James Bond (which is not totally unlike the Moore James Bond, but that's for another time).

The Green Hornet tv show was made in 1966 on a shoestring budget. The special effects were rudimentary. Yet that old series far outshines this movie. Van Williams played the Hornet as a tough-as-nails and hardcore fighter. Bruce Lee played every fight scene with total energy and effort. Those qualities are simply not to be found here. Even the two serials from the 40's rank one star higher than this, the poorest of entries in the GH family history.

There were two bright spots that I found. First was Jay Chou's portrayal of Kato. While lacking the charisma of Bruce Lee, Chou's Kato was intelligent and witty, a partner rather than a sidekick. I hope to see him in more U.S. movies. The second was an early scene in the movie in Britt's room that showed a poster reproduction of a cover from an issue of Dynamite's Lone Ranger comic. For those that might not know, the Lone Ranger (John Reid) is the great-uncle of the Green Hornet (Britt Reid). The tip of the hat was very nice. Interestingly, in 1980 a revival was attempted of the Lone Ranger. While the movie had a few nice moments it had generated so much bad publicity before it even was released that it bombed. I believe that Rogen's Hornet will make some money if for no other reason than mom and dad being able to take the 10 year olds to it, but quality-wise it actually ranks under the 1980 Lone Ranger.

I really wanted to like this movie. I knew that reconstructing the magic of the series was impossible....I'm not 12 anymore. I went in knowing that things would be different and for the first half hour kept telling myself that it was good. Sooner or later we learn to stop lying to ourselves. Not even Jeff Imada's martial choreography could save it. Here's hoping that it doesn't spawn a series of movies, each one less than the one before it. Masked heroes can be done right....Batman and Spider-Man, case in point. Even Ben Affleck's Daredevil was much better than this. This movie is silly and unintelligent and Seth Rogen should be ashamed of himself. Come to think of it, the producers should be ashamed of themselves because apparently they thought it was some good stuff. Don't waste your money on this one. You'll buy it for the kids, they'll watch it once, and you'll sell it in that garage sale you have every summer. Buy the old series on dvd....you'll keep that, if for no other reason than to watch Bruce.

I wish I could give it zero stars but I have to give at least one star. I'm not too familiar with the green hornet (of course I've heard of him) but since the movie is supposed to be action/adventure, I thought it would be interesting to watch. Boy, was I as wrong. The movie is predictable if nothing else. SPOILER ALERT or not since the movie is predictable. Rich father, spoiled, rebellious son, father murdered, son gets his act together and revenges father's death, make amends with dead father. Seth Rogen plays the green hornet(and I use the term loosely)in the same manner as all of his other roles: the big, dorky goofball that's desperately searching for a way to be significant. His cartoonish voice and goofy facial expressions he used while playing Green Hornet never seemed to convince me he was a superhero and made Green Hornet seem more like a caricature than a character. He cnstantly whines throughout the movie and even admits in the movie that he is jealous of Kato(I didn't know super heroes were jealous of their sidekick). The slapstick comedy threw the movie into a different realm of bad. It was a strange movie with strange characters. The story line(s) didn't develop, Green hornet and Kato's friendship didn't develop, nor did the roles of good guy vs. bad guy develop. It was like walking into the middle of a movie and watching it from that point on with no understanding of it. The horrendous acting from the entire cast along with a poorly written script makes for a very long two hours. Save your time and money and get something else, definitely not this movie!

Not at all what it could have been.

Just a poor flick all the way around -and it could have been great.

Poor acting for the most part, overkill on poor effects. Some were pretty good but the bad ones were really really bad and not required they took away from the movie.

The best part of the movie was the cars in the garage. Just watch the trailer and not any more.

Boogie Woogie (2009)

Boogie WoogieThis is a dark, dark look at the world of artists and those who deal in art. Calling this a black comedy is a gross understatement. Essentially everyone in this armpit of existence is in it for themselves. All are jockeying for position to get more, more, more for themselves. And they'll screw or screw over whomever they have to to get what they want.

There are a couple of stories running throughout this film. On one end you have Stellan Skaarsgard (an art collector) and Danny Huston (his art broker) trying to screw each other by outbidding each other to buy a piece of art (The Boogie Woogie of the title) which the owner, Chrostopher Lee, doesn't even want to sell. Meanwhile, Skaarsgard's assistant, Heather Graham, wants his backing to open her own gallery and start with a show by a maybe up and and coming video artist. To do so she will screw said artist's current promoter and screw Skaarsgard out of his cut. And Skaarsgard's wife, Gillian Anderson, will fool around with another up and comer and then want a divorce which will lead to more people screwing other people. You get the picture.

This is an acerbic view of how this part of society works. Everyone's disregard for the feelings of the people around them is unbelievable. There is a scene where Skaarsgard presents a "gift" to his new assistant. How, in anyone's world, this would be considered an appropriate gift is way beyond me.

The director, Duncan Ward, does a great job of giving you the look and feel for that part of London. The beauty, the hipness, the wealth and the attitude. All the acting is good and the writing is, for the most part, outstanding. Some might consider it "too", and they're probably right which is why I didn't give this the big FIVE stars. But all in all this is a great ride. It moves at a quick pace and doesn't linger on anything too long. I can recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in this part of existence.

This movie snuck up on me....I knew the loveyly Heather Grahmn was in it but that was it. Let me say that it was very funny and Heather looked amazing....She always brings something new to the table in each of her movies.

All I can say is that you won't be bored and that you may be surprise by how much you like it....

No spolilers here.....just my opninon....

I know critics and fair share of movie fans didn't like this movie. I don't think it was bad in my opinion. I find if you are a person who loves your art cinema, you will excuse most of the inconsistent plotting and find a lot the subject matter related to the art world and its artists quite relateable. The acting is enjoyable and made the plot work despite its choppiness. All in all, I believe the movie worked thanks to actors involved and the art gallery finale had alot of a life imitating art that saved the flim.

If You Are the One (Import) (2009)

If You Are the OneIf you are looking for a Hong Kong or Hollywood romantic comedy do not buy this movie. This is a modern Chinese romantic comedy in the manner of Big Shot's Funeral also by Feng Xiaogang and his favorite male lead, Ge You. Xiaogang uses outrageous premises that are put into motion in modern China's reality. The roles of the women Xiaogang puts opposite Ge You are excellent especially if you have seen them in their other bodies of work. Let me just say the segments of dating are delightfully humorous in the pursuit of a non-perfect mate for our "hero".

The dating segments build up what the story is about, finding love with the right person in a country where there are too many choices. Instead of him finding love he accepts a bargain to settle for someone he rejected. She has realized that she can never have the person that she loves but knows that life is not complete without a companion.

To start out their new life together they must go to Hokaido, Japan so she can end the old relationship and start their life together. There is excellent Chinese humor while they are in Japan (you will laugh when he becomes a loyal Yakuza) as we learn his reluctances and it is very serious as we her reluctances. You might even think it is going to be a Chinese tragedy but it does end up in a Chinese way as a romantic comedy. Some parents may not want to share this film with their children as some of the conversation are frank and there is one extremely short shot of nudity from behind (so beautifully shot, set and choreographed that it is not gratuitous).

If you want a sappy, happy-go-lucky romantic comedy skip this movie. If you want a serious yet funny movie about love then do not skip this movie, it is the one.

Chinese film "If You Are the One" is a romantic comedy, and a unique one at that. The story is about a forty-something single male Qin Fen (Ge You) looking for his future wife on the internet. One interesting thing about the mild-mannered guy (and very wealthy because of his strange "invention") is that he is a very honest person. Qin Fen says he is not handsome; he is not looking for someone like Angelina Jolie. He is just an ordinary man who wants to settle down.

Some of his blind dates turn out to be very unique. One beautiful woman tries to sell something unexpected to him; another is a pregnant girl who wants him to be her baby's father; even a male shows up. During his unsuccessful effort to get married, Qin Fen meets a beautiful flight attendant Smiley (Qi Shu, "The Transporter"). He at first passes up a chance to date her, but later a strange twist of fate bring them back together, and Smiley, with a little secret of her own, agrees to marry him only on one condition, a condition that few males would feel comfortable with.

The romantic comedy is directed by Xiaogang Feng ("Assembly" "Legend of the Black Scorpion"), a renowned director with a string of box office hits in mainland China, and by watching his "If You Are the One," you know why he has been successful. Shot against the backdrop of modern lifestyles of China, the film closely follows the story of two characters you can relate to, played by the talented cast. The story itself is nothing new, even slow-moving to some, but occasional humor (often clever references to modern Chinese society) and the director's authentic touch given to the characters make the entire film believable.

Unanimously well-acted, the film also greatly benefits from the breathtakingly beautiful landscape of Hokkaido, northern island of Japan. One huge disappointment for me is the film's wrap-up part that I think is a bit shorter than it should be, and the role of Vivian Hsu that is smaller than I expected. Still the romantic comedy is worth watching, entertaining, humorous and life-affirming.

This is the highest grossing film of all time in China. Hard to believe, as it's not really a remarkable film, except for Shu Qi, she's remarkable. When she asks her date if he believes in love at first sight he responds "I loved the first sight of you!" It's a very pleasant film. Funny, slightly quirky, it's an intimate study of two people's vulnerability, and it's thoroughly Chinese. I'm sure some of the humor was lost on me due to the fact I don't speak Mandarin! And Ge You's Mandarin accent is as thick as syrup. He does a great job playing a forty-something guy who's made his lot in life selling zany inventions and now has a very specific set of criteria he's looking for in a mate to settle down with. He meets Shu Qi and the two of them continue to meet, almost just to spite one another, neither believing there is anything there for the two of them. But love has an odd way of growing just my virtue of time spent together. This is a great 'date' movie.

Once again I see a movie from China that knocks me out and I reflect on how sad it is that so few people will see this. As of today, this will be only the seventh review for a movie that has been out since 2008. On the other hand, there are probably hundreds of reviews for any of a number of retreaded, predictable, juvenile, CGI-driven, product peddling, Pixar'd, cloying, and/or disturbingly violent movies that can't hold a candle to the beauty, emotional power, and sheer loveliness of If You Are the One.

Chinese favorite You Ge and the lovely Qi Shu play the two main characters and imbue their performances with nuance, genuine chemistry, and emotion. Throughout the two hours, I was moved to guffaws of laughter as well as lip-quivering tears. Xioagang Feng's poignant contemplations on love, relationships, marriage, and heartbreak struck nerve after nerve in me.

It saddens me that what passes for wisdom in Hollywood offerings usually reflects not so much our shared global humanity but rather our peculiar self-absorbed ethos and our superficiality. There are movies that are quite good (I just saw The Descendents and it was very good), but the vast majority is the equivalent of fast food garbage that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Indeed, there might be no better reflection of the decline of our society than the low number of well made movies coming out of Hollywood. How sad that, more often than not, Pixar makes the movies that touch us emotionally.

I apologize for this rant embedded in a review, but when I see such a beautiful motion picture as this one, I think how fortunate I am to have a fiancé who is Chinese to even bring this director to my attention. I hope to pass on this rare find to you. Indeed, this is the kind of experience you want to share with your fellow citizens. Isn't that what these reviews are really about? Isn't it about offering your opinion for the benefit of your brothers and sisters so that they might share in what you experienced (or be forewarned)? Highly recommended.

Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy (2007)

Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy(I have a feeling all reviews for this DVD is going to have at least one "fluffy" reference...)

Gabriel Iglesias is absolutely hysterical on this DVD! His CD Pikachu I See You is great and his Comedy Central appearances are always terrific and this DVD is no exception. His stories, his voices & impressions and just generally outrageous and still totally adorable delivery makes this DVD a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes to laugh!!!

I can't wait to see him live later this year. I'm a big fan of his, and this made me like him even more. The end joke about the two "hoochies" following his car and then both of the cars getting pulled over. The punchline was priceless. I sure hope he doesn't get too political with his comedy, but it was a 5 star stand up. If anyone wants to know, there's some jokes that get repeated but other than that, it's pretty much new material. Which is a good thing with an uprising comic. Check it out folks!

5 I really liked/loved it

4 I liked it

3 Could've been better/worth a look

2 Just didn't live up to the potential

1 Simply awful

Gabriel Iglesias is one funny dude. He has a lot of energy for a fluffy guy. I remember him when he was on the Nickelodeon show All That and he was funny on there. I didn't see anything of him for a couple years until I saw him on Comedy Central Presents (which was awesome). This routine is even better, partly because it's longer than the last one, and because it's got funnier stuff. He's great with impersonations, goofy voices, and sound effects. I hope to see more of him in the future, both in stand up and movies.

Gabriel Iglesias is overweight. If you've never seen him perform before it will be the first thing you notice. I showed this DVD to some friends of mine and when they first saw Gabriel come out on stage they couldn't believe how big he was. In fact, they focused on it so much I didn't think they were going to give him a chance. Well, less than 5 minutes in we were all laughing uncontrollably. You almost forget about his size even when his material is about his weight. His talent for comedy far outweighs his number of lbs. When I watch standup comedy I look for three things. Materiel, storytelling, and sound effects. There are a lot of successful comedians out there and most only have one of these talents. Gabriel has great material, his storytelling is some of the best I've heard (especially when telling the stories about when he's dealing with the cops), and his sound effects are also top notch (love the police siren and motor vehicles). Heck he even does great impressions from presidents, to a state trooper from the south, to an elderly Korean woman. Bottom line is that it's a great DVD from a great standup comedian who will hopefully be doing comedy for many years to come.

A friend told me to watch his show on Comedy Central. Gabriel Iglesias is HILARIOUS. He does excellent sound effects. Like many great comedians he talk about things that happen in his life and he's not afraid to laugh at himself. Would love to see one of his live shows one day.

Midgets Vs Mascots

Midgets Vs MascotsDespite its crude, disgusting and vulgar content, Midgets vs. Mascots has the soft underbelly of teaching people not to put labels on one another. For instance, it is WRONG to use the term 'Midget' they're LITTLE PEOPLE.

Aside from that, this is a film like no other, and a comedy like no other. I had the luxury of meeting the cast and crew at the Tribecca Film Festival in April, 2009 (though it wasn't very pleasant to meet Gary Coleman, who put his head down on a table and didn't speak to anyone). These people had the time of their lives making this movie, which I'm sure was just as fun to make as it was to watch.

This movie isn't for everyone, like those who don't appreciate toilet humor, but for those who do this is bound to be one of the funniest films they have ever seen.

I bought this movie over at their website before christmas and it's really really funny. they call it a Borat meets Jackass type movie and I'd say that's pretty spot on. There are ridiculously shocking stunts and some absolutely shocking moments that had me seriously laughing out loud.

I wasn't sure if Gary Coleman was acting or not, but he seems like the angriest little person there is (pun intended). Acting or not, Gary has some great scenes kicking the crap out of one of the main characters that's a complete a-hole.

My favorite character was Taco. The "i'm going to touch them anyway" line rocks. He's a sicko that has some of the best one liners you'll get out of a movie.

In case you were asking for my opinion, don't wait for this pre-order and just go to the website and get it now. Plus they send these little "midget condoms" as a gag gift.

I can't believe, I bought this. It's bad enough I was in it. I am the big truck driver guy in the MMA fight scene. We spent a day going over what we were going to do. Shot the fight scene twice. Now I am wishing they cut my entire scene. This is the sickest most repulsive movie I have ever seen in my life.
