Post Grad (2009)

I don't understand the low reviews! I loved this movie, and people seemed to have completely missed the point of the movie. The movie wasn't about life after college, it was about life in general and how there is no certain plan for life, you just have to go with the flow, i loved the crazy family, it would really be boring if the family was just like alexis character wouldn't it! I thought this film was so endearing and held me to the end! I agree it was all over the place but it wasn't hard to follow unless you're stupid. I thought this movie was funny but i felt they weren't trying to be funny, it just was. I really liked the message of this movie, people are so busy trying to make life fit into their little plan that they are missing the fact that this is life, it's happening while you're busy trying to make things happen that just aren't meant to be. Give this movie a try if you liked whip it, martian child, new york minute, uptown girls. I guess people just have different tastes in movies but i really enjoyed it!

I'm not sure why this movie didn't turn out better it had a great cast and a good storyline. Dealing with what happens after you graduate from college and before your adult life begins is a tricky time period. This movie half heartedly addressed this along with other issues, the other half went for cute romance. The end result? It was too all over the place and ended up a slightly less then average movie.

I liked all of the characters except for the cheesy south american soccer player across the street but hey, his type exists. The female lead (Ryden) is part of a goofy but lovable family of self titled losers: Michale Keaton was the father full of losing money propositions, the mother was low key and the younger oddball brother was cute but the family star was Carol Burnett as the wacky grandmother. Enter the love interest who has been Ryden's best buddy all through college but would like to be more. I'll sum up the movie for you: guy follows girl around like a puppy even after he is kicked a few times, gets mad and goes away, girl realizes what she had and runs after him the end.

Given all the talent you would think that the movie would work but it falls apart despite some good scenes (anything with Carol Burnett or the derby race). Perhaps different editing would have made all the difference? I cannot recommend this movie unless you are die hard fans of the actors.

Post Grad is about a girl who is just like many others at this time. She graduated after trying really hard in college and unfortunately finds herself boomeranged back to her parents house, jobless. She is a doer and an achiever and tries to find a place to start her life, even if it means working in jobs that may or may not require a college degree. She, perhaps like a lot of graduates, was so sure of where she was going with her life. She was thrown off course when things didn't work out and along the way she made some right decisions and some wrong ones, but she lived and learned about what is important to her. It is about finding out whats important in life and going after it; whether it be in the work life or the love life. I think that it is a beautiful and uplifting story. Alexis Bledel was the perfect young actress to pick for the part and she did a superb job. I admit that there was some ridiculousness and silliness with her family, but I think it help make the movie uplifting and a lot of fun. I think the movie leaves the viewer with a smile in remembrance.

In response to a previous review, Feminists are people who want equal opportunity for women and men alike. Feminists want women to strive for the best that they can be and live out their lives to the fullest of potentials. The modern Feminist has a much more political tie-in and in point of fact has really nothing to do with the movie. But in terms of traditional feminism there isn't much to complain about. What her father meant was that its okay to take some risks and she has shown herself to be in control of her life even as a child (eating her vegetables without being told) and she was able to achieve her dreams while realizing other dreams, but doesn't that sometimes happen. Okay, so she left, but she remained the same person as she was at home, even when she went away to college, and now in a different city, she will be different? How does that logic make sense? Geography has nothing to do with success. You can fulfill your dreams no matter where you go as long as you have the determination to do so. She has already shown that she is a go getter. She'll be great in NY too!

This is an easy fun film to watch that doesn't require any thinking. Ryden (Alexis Bledel aka Zooey Deschanel light) and her friend Adam (Zach Gilford) have just graduated college. Ryden has planned her life, except she didn't get the job she wanted. That job was taken by her arch rival Jessica Bard (Catherine Reitman) her "Darth Vader" since the third grade. Adam is love with Ryden who takes him for granted. He has a chance to travel 3,000 miles east to go to Columbia Law School, but hasn't had up his mind what he wants to do in life.

As Ryden hunts for a job, she is supported by her quirky family which I thought could have been better developed. The overly optimistic Ryden quickly becomes a realist as her job search wanes.

The movie is humorous and doesn't get dragged down with dramatic scenes for more than a few minutes. Good flow. Carol Burnett provided me with a few LOL moments. I will say from my experience with cats, they have never done their business in the driveway, they like somewhere they can bury it. It is a romantic comedy, with light emphasis on the romance.

Ryden Malby had it all figured out. Make good grades in high school, get a great college scholarship, keep the scholarship, graduate, and then work at the best publishing company in LA. Only things don't go quite as she planned. Instead of getting the job, she ends up unemployed and living with her crazy family once again.

Crazy is NOT an understatement.

Add on to that, a hot Brazillian neighbor and Adam, a guy who's been her best friend since freshman year, yet wants to be more. That's the plot.

The plot, while all over the place, works well for this movie. You're not sure what scheme one of the Malbys will come up with next. Will it be her father's plan to make a fortune online selling belt buckles or perhaps her grandmother (played by the ever amazing Carol Burnett) wanting to take a look at caskets? There's always something going on, with Ryden and her love life, or lack thereof, at the center of it all.

This movie defintely takes you for a ride. One that I really enjoyed.

Singin' In The Rain: 60th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2012)

First off, I need to point out that Amazon does have this odd policy of grouping ALL reviews of ALL versions and editions of a film in one place. So when a film is restored or reissued the reviews are grouped with the others. There are over400 reviews for "Singing in the Rain" here and they stretch back as far as 1998 and as recent as July 2012. Reviews are automatically sorted by the "Most Helpful" first and while I hope you will find my review helpful I do encourage you to look at the date of any review you read and compare it with the "release date" of the edition you are looking to purchase. With that said, I'll move on to my review.

I'll go along nearly everyone who treasures "Singin in the Rain" in saying it is probably one of the most important films ever made and the top musical. It's also the most entertaining 103 minutes you'll se on the screen. Sure there is smart dialogue, but the film boasts a compendium of wonderful "hit songs" that were all succeses even before the were incorporated in the story by Comden & Green. Go ahead and read the other reviews, if you are not familier with the plot or background of the film. That hasn't changed in the 20+ years of reviews.

I last reviewed this film on DVD 10 years ago when Warner Home Video released the 50th anniversary package in 2002. That was before Blu-ray. Because the multi-disc versions of the new 60th Anniversary Edition contain all the "special features" of the 50th Anniversary one, I chose the single-disc Bluray to see the new HD transfer and the new 53-minute documentary. The single-disc BD contains only the HD transfer, the doc, a "juke-box" function and the Theatrical Trailer (along with the commentary track from the 50th).

The PRINT is glorious even on my non HD TV. And the film was not in Wide Screen so the dimensions of your screen don't matter. The documentary really didn't add much, but was fun to watch. Its purpose was to reach the younger generation who are fans of "Glee" and "High School Musical". Both choreographers and actors from those shows are interviewed and tell about the first time they saw the film. A few "oldsters" like Rob Marshall and Baz Luhrman add comments and there are some from film historian Rudy Behlmer (who appeared on the Warner musical reissues before the start of the press-on-demand Warner Archive series). Of course there are lots of clips from the film (some repeated again and again) as well as clips from other Kelly films as well as Fred Astaire films comparing the two. A brief mention of importance of Arthur Freed is made but no discussion of the new digital transfer. It's an OK doc but, not sure it breaks any new ground.

Still, if you love this film (and I can watch it over and over) and have an HD TV, you'll probably want to pick this up. If you have the prior edition and an HD TV you'll want the single disc BD. If you don't own the prior one, you'll want the 2-disc version for all the extra bonus that were added 10 years ago.

But this is a DVD (in one form or another) that EVERYONE should own.

"Anything Phonographic"

Most people who are reading this review know how awesome "Singin' in the Rain" is, so I won't review the film, but rather I'll limit the review to the 60th Anniversary Blue-ray disc. I watched this on a 70" Sharp Aquos HDTV. What an experience! In a darkened room, with a giant bucket of coronary-inducing self-popped (not microwave) buttered popcorn (with real butter, thank you) and an enhanced sound system, I was transferred to a time that I hadn't experienced since I was a little kid. The blue-ray transfer is breathtaking with the brillant color, clarity, and sound. It was like watching a brand new film. This is how audiences originally saw the film 60 years ago. The commentary track was very informative, though it was recorded a few years ago, since some of the contributers are now deceased. The added features are excellent. I like the 'jukebox' feature, which allows you to watch just the musical numbers of your choice. If you only have a little time, but you need a quick uplifting shot of "Good Mornin'" or "Moses Suposes" you can do that. Also the added feature of interviews with some of today's dancers, choreographers, and musical film directors is fun. It's good to see the respect and admiration that they have for Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, et al. I suggest whatever home theater equipment you have, set yourself up as close to a theater setting as possible and get swept away. Experience how magical a movie experience can be.

If they would ever give out awards for Blu-ray.....This would be the one to take it.

I have a couple hundred Blu-ray discs and I, personally, think this is the best disc that was ever pressed. I've seen Singing In The Rain in the theater, on VHS, on Bata Max, CED videodisc, Laser Disc and DVD. But, WOW, I have never seen this movie look and sound so good. You've got to see it! WOW!

This is a revisit to a movie I haven't seen in years. Have I changed my view? Nope. In fact, watching the film on the new Blu ray disc more than confirms that the film still holds up after 60 years. The video transfer maintains the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. While the images aren't quite as natural as you might like, there are very few distractions. The colors are spectacular and the dancing is the greatest ever put on film.

Gene Kelly seen here in his prime and in a tuxedo, could have been a great James Bond. Cool, good looking with beautiful women all around. Dancing never had a better stud. Donald O'Connor is a second banana here, but check him out in his solo routine, "Make `Em Laugh". He teams up with Kelly in a couple complicated numbers and you will never see better choreography.

The story centers around the time when silent films made the transition to "talkies" (1927) and Kelly's leading lady couldn't make the jump due to her high pitched Brooklyneze voice. Her voice and singing are later dubbed in by a newcomer named Kathy (Debbie Reynolds). She's also Don's (Kelly) new fling. This is all fun, inside stuff but the real action is on the dance floor.

The film of course, features Kelly's take on the title song, which I've seen dozens of times. It is still spectacular. I had forgotten about the 13 minute dance sequence in the last act featuring Kelly and long-legged Cyd Charisse. She dances throughout this number with a 30 foot long scarf flowing behind her. It wraps gracefully around Kelly several times. It is beautiful to watch, as is the whole movie.

While the film in this Blu ray version is visually an upgrade from DVD, the audio is the real star. The newest option is a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. It's a big deal. The songs in particular have been given a wonderful mix. The LFE channel is restrained keeping focus suggested by the original mono score. Special features include a new documentary, commentary by several of the stars and others and a "jump-to-song" feature. This is a pretty bare bones package (one disc) for what is a milestone film.

I may be the first one to review the Blu-ray release of Singin' in the Rain, and I will be brief: SPECTACULAR!!!. The restoration of the picture (4K) and the DTS multi-channel English track will knock your socks off!

This 60 year old classic looks like it was just filmed, except in glorious TECHNICOLOR. For those of us who were lucky to see revivals of this film in theatres with prints from the IB Technicolor masters, it is such a joy to see this quality in our own home theaters looking so beautiful. For the newer film fans who have only seen this movie on a TV screen, you don't know what you are missing. This is a classic you MUST see on the largest screen you can possibly view it on. There aren't many extras , and the trailer is standard definition, but the most important thing for me is the absolutely stunning quality of the main feature. I recommend this release on Blu-ray. It is the closest to classic movie heaven you will get!!.

Dil Bole Hadippa- Shahid Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee (2009)

This is one funny, lively and very entertaining film. Rani Mukherjee goes above and beyond the call of an actor's duty to deliver a great performance. The other actors are focused and very much in tune with their characters. The music is excellent and the dance numbers compliment the spirit and pace of the film. Buy this DVD. You will not regret it! I loved it! Two thumbs way up.

"Dil Bole Hadippa!" ("My Heart Shouts "Hadippa"!(Hooray) makes a good intro to Bollywood/Indian musicals. It has all the splash of full-out Bollywood but with terrific modern updates & a little something for everyone. For the ladies there's the predictable but crackling good rom/com tension between Shahid Kapoor & Rani Mukherjee. With all this wrapped up in a cricket championship with a little gender-bending to keep it off-balance, guys should find it just as entertaining. For those who avoid subtitled films, know that there's as much English dialogue in Bollywood films nowdays as Hindi, particularly in this one, so don't let that keep you away.

The score is fantastic, with terrific Punjabi-flavored dance tunes that will keep anyone moving on the dance floor or in the workout room. Shahid's dancing is stellar as ever, and it's nice to see him finally paired with a partner who matches his energy & precision; someone he can really "play ball" with. Rani & Shahid are among my favorites separately, and together they don't disappoint. Rani as Veer/Veera is awesome. I thought it would be impossible for such a petite female to convincingly appear as a guy, but she goes at it with gusto & delivers great laughs. Shahid delivers a well-shaded performance with another slightly edgier character. Nice to see him moving so successfully from Boy-Next-Door characters to work with wider range.

It's a visually gorgeous film also, with all the bright colors & gorgeous Punjab landscapes in-larger-than-life 70mm. And, uh..the lead actors aren't too hard on the eyes, either.

It's a remake of She's The Man (the one with Amanda Bynes) but executed so well.

In order to fulfill her dream of playing cricket for India, 'carnival dancer' and talented cricketer Veera (Mukherjee) transforms herself into her male alter ego Veer but she of course finds it difficult to keep up the pretense when she falls for the captain of the team, Rohan (Kapoor).

This movie is so much fun. Predictable, yes. A little parochial, yes. But full of life, well acted, well directed, and with one of the best soundtracks I've heard on a Hindi film. Rani Mukherjee blew me away as Veer/Veera I had no idea she had such excellent comedy chops. Shahid Kapoor is at his best in many ways he gets to show some range (including a touch of the dark side he showed in Fida). Most importantly he has shed that ridiculous SRK haircut he has had in past movies. And he is simply mesmerising to watch when he dances.

Mika Singh & Co. pulled out all the stops for a great soundtrack for this movie too 'Discowale Khisco', 'Hadippa!', 'Bhangra Bistar', are all great beat-driven tunes.

My only minor complaint is the movie falls into the old 'Punjab is the best' rut which probably started with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Here we have another great Yah Raj film (Yash Raj: best known for big budget, very colorful, very musical, artistically mesmerizing, films) starring my favorite actress Rani Mukerji. And here she stars with the younger newcomer actor Shahid Kapoor. This is one of those films you can watch with the whole family.

A country girl who loves to play cricket, and wants to play professionally, but they won't let her because she's a girl. So, she dresses like a man and gets selected to play, and is continually proving to be an outstanding player. But, once it's revealed that she's a girl, her coach wants to dismiss her from the team, even though the other players want her to play because she is a big part as to why they are winning. So, perhaps this may contribute to the probability that rules may change in the future as women prove that they are to be considered equals in the hard-headed Indian man's world.

I generally watch Bollywood films because I love to watch good looking people on film. A good story is only secondary as my intention to be entertained.

If you an English speaking American, and are new to Bollywood films, let me give you a breakdown of how I interpret and ingest the Bollywood experience:

First of all, you will most always be reading English subtitles.

The average Bollywood film is about 3 hours long.

Bollywood films are very colorful. All their beautiful fashion, and colorful dance floors. In High Definition, just the sceneries alone make you appreciate what High Definition is all about.

About 30 percent of the film will be music videos (with Yash Raj films, it's more like about 45 percent). I personally wish there were less music videos if the movie is already over three hours long.

About 30 percent of most Bollywood films have some rather silly, really unfunny, and downright annoying comedy scenes (which is usually in the first half of the film), then the film will start to become more serious, as it moves along.

One of the main reasons why you will watch a Bollywood film, is because you already chose to fall in love with one of their many beautiful actresses, or handsome actors. (I personally try to see all Rani Mukherji films, and Shah Rukh Khan is the one actor known to be one of the biggest box office sellers of Bollywood.)

So, I guess I can honestly say that I have about 10 Blu-Ray Bollywood films which about 7 of them are Yash Raj releases. Thouugh I have about 100 Bollywood films on DVD, all I really care to get on Blu-Ray now is "Lagaan" which was the first Bollywood film that I saw about 10 years ago. And perhaps "Mann" with Aamir Khan, and "Rangeela" which stars the enchanting Urmila Matondkar. Oh, and I guess it would be truly appreciated if "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai" starring Amisha Patel and Hrithik Roshan would ever be released in High Definition Blu-Ray. The scenes in India and New Zealand were all just so beautiful on the screen.

Another good movie that I would like to recommend, that is not a Yash Raj film, but is available on Blu-Ray is "Ghulam" starring Rani Mukherji and Aamir Khan. Even all the song videos in this film are all truly appreciated, and the added humor isn't so annoying. Check it out!

CONTAINS SPOILERS!! I know a lot of people have compared this film to the 2006 film "She's the man". I think it goes a little deeper than that. It's the story of Rani's character,she dreams of playing cricket & making it big. Rani works for a travelling production company,where she works as a makeup artist. Anupam Kher has a cricket team that seem to lose to the opposing team every time. He asks his son who is a hot shot Rugby player in the U.K. to come to India to train his team & take over. Anupam's son is Shahid. Shahid lives with his mom in London.Shahid"s parent's are divorced, and Shahid is totally disconnected from his Indian roots-his father longs for him to love India as much as he does. Shahid takes over the team & there are open tryouts. Rani goes to the tryouts only to be rejected only b/c she's a woman. She decides to return dressed as a man. When Rani sees that everyone believes her to be a man she figures she can go ahead with her plan. Rani's abilities at playing cricket are exceptional & she becomes the team's star player. Within time Rani becomes Shahid's favorite player. Shahid's car gets stuck in the countryside & he hitches a hayride with Rani as herself. Shahid & Rani don't hit it off as Rani is completely Punjabi & Shahid believes himself to be more of a Londoner than embracing his Punjab roots. Shahid refers to Rani as a "Buffalo Girl". Rani despises Shahid at first but as the movie progresses she begins to fall for him. In a particular shower scene is when Rani's true self is almost revealed-when Shahid walks into the men's shower room & comes face to face with Rani as herself!!! Rani comes up.with the story that she's Veer's twin sister "Veera". Indignified that Shahid may have seen her nude she exits. Shahid continues to.think of her. On a country road Shahid who's accompanied by a girl that's in love w/him "Soniya" & his father Anupam-comes face to face with Rani (Veera). Veera's production company truck has stopped in the middle of the road & Anupam uses this as an opprtunity to ask Veera to show him the countryside & beauty of India. Veera takes him to the countryside & it is within this trip that Shahid reconnects w/his Punjab roots & falls in love w/Veera. Shahid asks Veer if he can date Veera (Rani) & to deliver a letter to Veera. In the letter Shahid asks Rani to meet him for a date at a specific location. Rani shows up dressed beautifully & Shahid is smitten by her beauty & charm. Shahid asks her to be his girl. Rani tells him she'll tell him the next day after the big Cricket tournament. At the tournament, in the midst of the action Veer's contact lens falls out & Shahid picks it up.off the field. Shahid calls Veer over & notices one of his eyes is Yellow/Green & the other is black like the contact lens he holds in his hand. Shahid immediately figures out that Veer/Veera are the same person! During an intermission Shahid asks Rani why did she pose as a man?! She explains why. Shahid also asks if Rani has really fallen in love w/him or if that's also part of the act. Rani tells Shahid that she's truly in love w/him & how sorry she is for causing him pain. Anupam tells Shahid that he shouldn't be so hard on her & allow her to continue to play the rest of the tournament. Shahid allows Rani to continue in the participation of the tournament. In the end Shahid's team wins due to the efforts of Rani. Shahid goes to collect the prize & he asks Veer to come up to the microphone. Veer takes off the wig & contacts to reveal herself as Veera. The crowd being biased against a woman participating in a male dominated sport-boo her. Rani gives a very effective & somewhat feminist speech-explaining how she had to become a man to participate b/c whenshe came as herself she was completely discriminated against. The crowd changes their attitude upon hearing Veera's version of events. Shahid & Rani stay together. All of the songs in this film are awesome!!!! The dance numbers are absolutely top notch!!! At the end of the credits there's an additional song which is awesome!!! If you're looking for romance mixed with comedy-this is absolutely perfect. I'm a fan of Rani-she's not only gorgeous but talented. Shahid brings his dance talent into this filmI was totally engaged with his gorgeous looks & dance numbers!! I've seen this movie 5 times & I don't tire of it :)

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (2011)

Wow..this is my very first review...and what can i say...I don't understand why this movie is recieving so many negative reactions and reviews. I thought it was very funny and just an enjoyable movie. I actually like this one better than Big Momma's House 2. Martin Lawrence and Brandon T. Jackson have great chemistry both on-screen and off-screen,they are both comedians so the jokes were on point.(my opinion). Brandon T. Jackson replaced Jascha Washington after he declined to reprise the role of Trent, which in this movie, due to the plot and his character having a leading role, he probably wasn't the best fit for the "new" Trent anyway as the storyline makes it out to be.(my opinion)

The plot: FBI agent Malcolm Turner(Martin Lawrence) and his 17-year old stepson Trent(Brandon T. Jackson) go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. Posing as Big Momma and Charmaine, they must find the murderer before he finds them.

The movie also stars Jessica Lucas(Haley),Portia Doubleday(Jasmine),and Faizon Love(Kurtis Kool).If you are a true Big Momma fan, you'll love this one!-----or maybe not, depending what YOU like.. Just give it a chance for once, I highly reccomend viewing this film if you love comedy!

Big Mommas House 1 was good. Big Mommas House 2 was much better. Big Mommas House: Like Father Like Son was better then the the first movie, but not as good as the second movie. I enjoyed this movie a lot. I wasn't crazy about the musical dances. I'm not crazy about musical movies. But I enjoyed it any ways.

What I Can Tell You: I have seen all the Big Momma Movies and still crack up when I see Martin Lawrence as Momma/Malcolm. Come on, too funny. Lawrence and Jackson are funny together. My favorite scenes were any that Jackson had to act like a chick with hot dorm girls walking around in towels. Classic comedy at its best. A dude in drag, done a hundred times, but still funny. Oh, and I have got to mention Momma does nude modeling. Hahahaha...hysterical.

Although I missed Nia Long, as Malcolm's girlfriend I thought as far as a third attempt goes, this was funny.

This is obviously not an Oscar worthy movie, but, if what you are looking for is a good time, a few laughs at hidden identity and some physical comedy, this is a good choice.

I have the other two DVD's of Big Momma so I knew I had to have the 3rd DVD. This movie is funny just like the other two dvds. I always like a good laugh.

Personally I preferred part 1 and 2 the best.

This 1 is lacking some of the humor and comedy of it.

It is a good film and well worth watching. But I suggest watching part 1 first if you have never seen it.

It was much Much Better.

I couldn't wait for this to be aired so I could watch it then When I seen it I was glad I never Spent extra on it.

All in all yes I am sure I will watch it again. But it is not as funny as 1 and 2
