Good Luck Chuck (Unrated) (2007)

Having seen Dane Cook as a stand-up comedian and been entertained by his humor and delivery, GOOD LUCK CHUCK seemed like an innocuous brainless evening entertainment. Unfortunately the story and script and direction are so sub par that even the most devoted of potty mouth movie fans will likely find this dud a bore. Hopefully Cook will be given better material for his next outing.

The story is meager but deals with a childhood hex placed on Cook's character, dentist Charlie Logan, which prevents him from finding lasting love: every woman with whom he sleeps (and there are countless encounters in the buff on endless multi-screen images) will marry the man she meets after her liaison with 'good luck' Charlie Logan. His obnoxious breast augmenter best friend Stu (Dan Fogler) sees Chuck's hex as a godsend for open sex, but when Chuck meets Klutz penguin trainer (Jessica Alba) and falls in love, there are problems the solutions of which are so disgusting and unfunny that hardly need repeating.

This is a film, apparently with an audience (!), that is gross and so over the top that it completely wastes the talents of Cook and Alba. The film is being advertised as the 'chance to extensively see Dane Cook in the buff', but even that is an overstatement. Maybe if the viewer is on strong drugs....No, probably not even then. Crude? Yep! So what! The movie was hysterical. My boyfriend AND my 62 yr old mother were laughing, and so was everyone in the theater. Its fun! The 1st thing my mom said when the credits started to roll was, "I'm buying that THAT was funny, and not the stupid funny either really funny!"

"Good Luck Chuck" is not a romantic comedy, but rather a raunchy comedy that is sort of about romance. If there was some notion of romance at the heart of this movie, it would have a chance of working, but of the different organs and body parts that are prominent in this 2007 film, the heart would not be one of them. When we get to the big moment at the end of "Good Luck Chuck," compare it to the same scene in "The Wedding Singer," and you can see how short this one falls of the mark. In other words, this is really not a date film, because first-time director Mark Helfrich's final product is slanted way towards the male of the species. You might check this film out for Jessica Alba, but the focus is on Dane Cook and that along should tell you this movie is going to favor comedy over women, and comedy that favors men over women.

That is not to say that the premise is not promising. The titular Chuck is Charlie Logan (Cook), and, no, the film is not bothered by the fact that nobody calls him Chuck. Because of what happened during an adolescent game of Spin the Bottle, Charlie is cursed: any woman he loves will leave him and immediately find and marry the man of her dreams. As Charlie comes to realize his peculiar situation there is good news--women are throwing themselves at him in order to leap out of his bed and find the guy for them--and bad news--he meets Cam Wexler (Alba), who is cute, a klutz, and works with penguins, allowing the film to show how far the penguin fever of "March of the Penguins", "Happy Feet," et al., has fallen. More importantly, she looks like Jessica Alba, so we instantly understand why Cam is a keeper from Charlie's perspective, even if his best friend Stu (Dan Fogler), a plastic surgeon whose practice is limited to boob jobs, probably thinks too little of her. This creates the ultimate paradox for Charlie, because to love this woman is to lose her, which is a pretty interesting Catch-22.

I am sure that if I added up the minutes that Charlie really does spend more time with Cam than he does with Stu, but it sure does not feel that way. But the real problem in this film comes in the sequences that it is proudest of: the sex montage. There is a whole special feature devoted to it as the "Sex Matrix." My immediate reaction to all of this was to wonder if I had ever seen a motion picture with more naked women in it than this one, and while I am sure I have this is a concerted effort in "Good Luck Chuck" to prove otherwise. But when you are watching a guy have sex with dozens of women, it is hard to lend credence to the idea that he is really in love with the woman he is not having sex with. To offer a rejoinder to Stu, while it is true that sex without love is still sex, it is still without love, and love is supposed to be at the heart of a romantic comedy, which is why this film is not one.

My favorite romantic comedy of recent vintage is probably "50 First Dates," and I gave that one only four stars because the raunchy stuff with Rob Schneider took away from the wonderful stuff happening with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. But "Good Luck Chuck" is following more in the steps of contemporary comedies like "Knocked Up" and "Superbad," where the goal is to produce a unrated DVD edition. So "50 First Dates" is now looking more like a classic romantic comedy to me. If "50 First Dates" had been made the way they made "Good Luck Chuck," then the opening montage of past lovers in the former would have been in the middle, in which case they are no longer past lovers and the decks are not cleared for a real romance. By the time Charlie and Cam get to anything remotely like the romantic part, it is too little too late. When you get to the last in a long line of women, it is hard not to focus on the long line rather than the last woman. The screenplay by Josh Stolberg ("Kids in America") does come up with a decent enough way of resolving the dilemma, but given everything that has come before it, the ending fails to redeem this movie.

Mr. Bernabo and Ms. Richards wrote all the true words in their reviews to warn me away, but the opportunity to see more "on-screen Jessica Alba" was so overpowering, I went on and watched it anyway. Was I ever sorry!

Dane Cook and Dan Fogler are two of the worst actors I've ever seen. As best as I can remember (I'm trying hard to forget this movie) all of the humor was based on two guy sidekicks saying the most inappropriate words at all the most inappropriate times imaginable. I cannot think of a role either actor would be suited for. It's not even worth a review -think of this as a warning to your entertainment welfare.

The writing for this movie was just awful. And lord knows I adore Jessica Alba, but even that darling couldn't make this movie worth watching.

An overall abysmal effort.

I thought the movie was funny. Paced a bit fast, and the jokes could have been written a bit better, but I thought the movie was actually fun to watch. I was expecting Jessica Alba to be horrible in her perfomance (ie Honey), but I liked her acting in this movie, she fits the romantic-comedy genre better than anything she's done thus far. And Dane Cook was also funny, albeit sometimes over did some of his reactions. All in all, it's a fun movie, nothing you'll go telling your friends to go out to buy, but still worth a watch!

License to Drive (1988)

LICENSE TO DRIVE is a fast-moving teen comedy from the 80s starring the comic duo of the two Coreys Haim and Feldman. Anyone who remembers a time when all our idols were named COREY will love this trip back down memory lane. First off great cast with Heather Graham in an early role as dream girl Mercedes Lane and Carol Kane as the pregnant mom. It's a typical comedy, but the director provided enough style and zip to make it all work well. The driving exam scene is classic, and there a lot of good one liners "Who would have thought a Mercedes could fit in the trunk of a Cadillac?". The DVD includes a deleted sequence with an ALTERNATE CLIMAX. The whole thing runs about 20 minutes, and shows you how the movie could have ended. Also you get a funny commentary with the director and writer, and some current intereviews with each Corey separately. The transfers and audio are top-notch as well! Great price for a great DVD.

In License to Drive Corey Haim stars as Les Anderson. He has a problem. He has no license. He is too cool to be seen on the school bus and it's totally not cool to have your friends mom drop you off at parties. Plus, Wes has a crush on a hot blonde who just happens to be named Mercedes.

The time arrives when Les finally has his opportunity to go out on a date with Mercedes--but his parents discovered that he really failed his driving test. Les has got to make it happen and he takes the car anyway. Heck, Mercedes called him and expected to see him in 20 minutes, what's a teenage boy to do? The night becomes filled with misadventures and Mercedes gets so smashed she spends part of the night in the trunk of the car. The excitement only continues when Les' mother, played by Carol Kane needs to get to the hospital.

If you haven't seen this film in a while, it's just as great as it was when it was first released. The two Coreys followed up License to Drive with the movie Dream a Little Dream. Dream a Little Dream didn't have the commercial appeal as License to Drive. Although both Corey's appear on the cover, this was another film in which Corey Haim was definitly doing most of the driving considering the majority of the storyline revolved around him, his circumstance and his family, but Corey Feldman is a good sidekick as his buddy Dean.

There is also some cool music featured in License to Drive. While watching the movie keep your ears peeled for "Rush Hour," by Go Go's member Jane Wiedlin, "Mercedes Boy," by Pebbles, "Trouble," by Nia Peeples, "I Feel Free," by Belinda Carlisle, and "Get Out of My Dreams and Into My Car," by Billy Ocean.

The DVD itself does have some cool features which makes up for the wait in having this cool film on DVD. Extra's include interviews with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, audio commentary with director Greg Beeman and writer Neil Tolkin, deleted scene, TV spots and theatrical trailers. The DVD-Rom portion of extras include the films screenplay.

The best extra's are the interviews with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Both actors look much better than they have in years. Corey Feldman has cut his hair since he appeared on The Surreal Life. Corey Haim has lost some weight and is sporting a spiky blond haircut. Both actors discuss how they got involved with the film, how they met and their experience of working together. The interviews are not real short, which is sweet.

Hey, movie lovers! If you like 80's movies, you must see this 1988 comedy! It's about a 16 year old dude named Les (Corey Haim, The Lost Boys) who wants nothing more in the world than a driver's license. Unfortunately, he thinks he knows everything about driving and doesn't need to study for his test. Is he right? No way!

The most beautiful girl in his school (Heather Graham, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) has just asked him out on a date. There's only one problem: He doesn't have a license! Does that stop him? No! He sneaks out in the middle of the night in his grandpa's '72 Cadillac, thinking nothing can possibly go wrong. He tries his best to keep anything from happening to it, which he finds out is almost impossible!!

This movie was filmed in 1987, and released in the summer of 1988. It also features Corey Feldman (also from the Lost Boys) and is a great comedy, and a must-see! Unfortunately, its out of print on VHS, but hopefully it will come back, and on DVD! You gotta see it!! It has GOT to be the best 80's movie ever made!!

With the recent loss of Corey Haim I've noticed a decent amount of newly released older titles, staring the late actor, gracing the shelves of my local department store. Of course this is nothing new. A celebrity passes away & studios generate more income for their previous work (i.e. Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson & Heath Ledger) thus releasing everything they can in response to the recent publicity. I suppose it's a win/win for both consumers & studios. After all, true Corey fans can finally get their hands on a few of his obscure 80's films such as Dream A Little Dream 2 & Demolition University (which, by the way, has "Remembering TheTeen Idol" prominently displayed on the front cover) but I can't help but feel his death is being slightly exploited here. I mean, just a few short months ago the License To Drive DVD was out of print, leaving fans of the movie SOL if they wanted to pick it up for a fair price. I suppose that's show business though....

Nonetheless we have License To Drive on Blu-Ray; my personal favorite Corey's movie. By now, we consumers, know how this works. Just because an older film is finally released on Blu-Ray it doesn't guarantee its been given the Blu-Ray treatment. Transfers can sometimes be atrocious. Thankfully this is not the case with License To Drive.

Presented in a 1080p picture the images are strong & steady perhaps slightly soft in places but sharp for the most part. Details are steady with strong clarity and a slight grain structure. Facial complexions have a soft edge, but generally the texture is satisfactory. Colors are decent, not exactly vibrant, not exactly dull, which results in an intermediate shading that works fairly well. Darks are fine, but can't match the deepness of newer titles. The print itself has been cleaned up removing the dust & nicks that accompanied previous releases. Truth be told, this is probably the best License To Drive has, or ever will, look... but don't expect Mission-Impossible-Ghost-Protocol-type picture quality here.

Like the picture, sound is good through the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack, but leaves something to be desired. Music is strong with fair clarity but solid spacing; a noticeable surround element is achieved nicely. The action scenes toward the end of the movie have all the desructive sounds of automotive chaos; very crisp accuracy. Certain scenes, however, sound indistinct; like a bus crashing through an alleyway early in the opening chase scene. For the most part the sound is rewarding, but not top notch. Still... not too shabby for a 1987 title.

If anyone here is thinking of replacing their DVD version I would say yes, this is a justifiable upgrade; especially for the price. Corey Haim will be missed by fans, but it's Blu-Ray titles like this that keep his memory alive. Normally I would give four stars for a Blu-Ray of this quality, but considering what they had to work with & the fact that certain Corey titles have yet to even be released on DVD (Dream Machine) I'm giving it the extra star. Like I said... this is the probably the best License To Drive will ever get.

Sit back and enjoy a classic teen movie from the 80s. The hair, the posters, the cars, etc. All 80s rolled into a fun movie.

You aren't supposed to learn anything, it won't win any awards or be critically acclaimed. It's a Haim/Feldman movie that I find a lot of fun.

Kamikaze Girls

The only way to legally see this movie in widescreen. Beautiful Blu Ray picture. Extras disc is Region 2, I think, you'll need a R0 player to watch it, but there's nothing on it worth seeing. If you need to see the extras they are on the standard DVD you can rent.

(this review is from my DVD review of the movie, I felt the first 2 reviewers here are reviewing it more on the merits of what region a bonus disc is rather than the movie itself, perhaps you may be a first time viewer of this movie?)

A story between two seemingly unlike people on the surface, but more simlilar then either know underneath.

Some people may think the premise has been done before, but truth be told, everything has been done before. In my opinion it hasn't been done quite as well until now. Underneath all the quirkiness and silly moments, you catch a glimpse of what SOME teenage girls are looking for as they grow up...and that is simply someone they can really call a friend.

At first, you would think one girl is weak while another is strong, but they are more appropriately described as apprehensive. The frilly Momoko hides behind her fantasy Rococo/Lolita facade and the vulgar Ichiko her tomboy/grease monkey grimace. But what both girls hide and sometimes try to run away from is finding true friendship in an otherwise empty and uncaring world.

This really is a beautiful and smart movie, it just so happens to be absolutely hilarious. Witness Momoko's distaste for mass produced fashion from Jusco, and the fictitious tale a once mousy Ichigo created to run away from.

Buy it, watch it once for the experience...watch it again and again for it's little nuances, and see if you can pick up on the extra layers.

Being a big fan of the DVD release ( Kamikaze Girls ), I was excited to see this on Blu-Ray!

Unfortunately, the release is flawed for anyone outside of the UK (or with a region-free/PAL player).

First, the good news: Video quality is very good (the DVD used a non-anamorphic transfer (so on a widescreen TV, black bars on all 4 sides) with "permanent subtitles" part of the video and pretty poor video. The Blu-Ray improves these in every way -video is sharp for the most part (some scenes seem a little soft, but a very big improvement over the DVD. Definitely doesn't appear to be an "Upscale/Upconvert"). I will note while it is Anamorphic widescreen, there are STILL black bars on all 4 sides, just much smaller (about 1 inch on each side (left/right/top/bottom), on a 32" TV) I don't know why this is.

Subtitles are removable, audio is Japanese only (5.1).

Unfortunately, part of the problem comes with the 2nd disc (extras) the extras include music videos, trailers, a short film, interviews with director & cast, and a 40-minute making-of clip (all on the 2nd disc) while Disc 1 (Blu-Ray) is region free, Disc 2 is PAL-only and will not play on all/most players (a PS3, for example). These were NOT all on the US DVD, so this is a disappointment. There are no extras on the Blu-Ray itself.

Additionally, the "Sideways Mode" is missing (it was on the US DVD). The US DVD also included a booklet (Kamikaze Girls: Novala Takemoto preview) and a nice insert for the chapter listing.. none of which are on this set.

If you only care about the movie, this is still a great upgrade from the US DVD, just don't expect to be able to access the extras.

Footloose (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2011)

They remade Footloose? I groaned when I even thought about how bad this was going to be. I liked the original, and didn't even consider seeing this when it came out at the theatre. Flash forward to a cold and rainy night, and my teenage kids decide to rent this on pay per view. I groan again, thinking how awful this is going to be. I couldn't even watch it, so I puttered around the house doing everything else but sit there and watch a somewhat iconic movie be destroyed. Two hours later, and my kids could not stop talking about it. They loved it. Curious, I plopped down and watched it. They wanted to see it again. I was shocked. The first thing that grabs your attention is how my kids kept thinking the clothes and hair were cool. I told them that in the ancient 80's, we used to flip our collars up, have our pants cinched at the ankles, and wear our hair short on the sides and long on top. I also told them we used to dance. It was a blast from the past, but a bridge to the present. The story seemed fresh to the teenagers, and was even fresh to me. The dancing is great. The acting is decent, and this movie is fun. There are a few scenes that are not appropriate for younger kids (a girl having sex for the first time, drug references, underage drinking, a girl getting slapped by her boyfriend, some swearing), but very tame stuff when compared to the groundbreaking stuff John Hughes did in the 80's. It was a way to connect with the kids. The movie is certainly way better than expected. Way better than the garbage some remakes are. Well done. Well done indeed.

From Tom Cruise getting down in his tighty whiteys in "Risky Business" to Jennifer Grey having the time of her life in "Dirty Dancing", eighties movies were filled with great moments involving dancing. They were one of a kind, and can't be recreated with the same impact. If you asked me before I saw the reviews, I would have said that the cinematic world did not need a remake of "Footloose." Mainly, because I can't think of a remake of an eighties' film that bettered the original. In this case, I've only seen bits of the original, so I thought this was pretty good.

The plot is the same as the `84 version. When a group of teens are killed in a drunk driving accident, the minister (Dennis Quaid) whose son has also died, and the town officials ban virtually everything teens do for recreation, including dancing. (Drag racing busses aflame, does get a pass.) Three years later, Bobby's younger sister, Ariel, played by Julianne Hough, is busy doing everything that's been banned and not caring if she's caught. She also has the requisite bad boy older boyfriend, who doesn't respect her. Naturally, she's a perfect match for new kid in town Ren (Kenny Wormald reprising the Kevin Bacon role), who's moved in with his uncle's family, following the death of his mom from cancer. Ren is a good kid, but after a series of run-ins with the local authorities, he decides to cut loose, kick off his Sunday shoes and with his new friends, get the ban on dancing revoked.

The lead does a good job, but if you ask me, Miles Teller, playing Ren's pal who must overcome his fears of being a "dancing dork" stole the show. Also excellent is Andie McDowell, in the role of the preacher's wife, who has stood by her man for too long and is about to tell him some uncomfortable truths. Oh yes, and the dancing is totally awesome.

I loved the remake of Footloose. I was a fan of the original, and think this movie stayed true to the first, and added so much to it.

Kenny Wormald does a fantastic job as Renboy can act, move, is hot,and has chemistry with the whole cast. Julianne Hough does a great job as Ariel.

She has really impressed me with her acting, and can dance so well. Miles Teller as Willard.. WOW. I'd never seen him in anything before, but

he's so funny. As good as Kenny, and Julianne are in this (and they are good), Miles has some great scene stealing moments. His girlfriend, Rusty, is

also fantastic. I'm not sure of the actress, but she's beautiful, and can dance. Andie McDowell is fantastic as Ariel's mom, Vi. She has a understated

strength. Dennis Quaid does a good job as the concerned father of Ariel, and the town reverend. There are several fantastic scenes where Ren and the Reverend

talkmy favorite being towards the end when he asks for permission to take Ariel to the dance. And of course Ren's speech at the town council is excellent.

And watching Willard learn to dance was HILARIOUS. And the little girls (Ren's cousins) are pure cute. Fantastic supporting cast. Amazing stars.

Highly recommend this movie.

I dragged two friends to see Footloose with Kevin Bacon when it premiered in Seattle. They didn't care very much for the film. I, on the other hand, loved it. I had never heard of Kevin Bacon, but I became and instant fan. I have watched everything he has done, right down to the episodes of The Closer that he directed.

I own 6 DVDs of Hamlet. Should I say that since Laurence Olivier filmed Hamlet there is now no room for anyone else to do so? Are David Tennant, Derek Jacobi and Christopher Plummer to be seen as "upstart crows" who have nothing new to add? I mean, Olivier! How do you top that? Or could we see Tennant and Jacobi and Plummer as actors with a different interpretation?

And, could we not look at the remake of Footloose as a different interpretation rather than seeing it as a replacement? I loved Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer. But, I was a Kenny Warmold fan from the moment I saw him in Center Stage: Step It Up. As Ren MacCormack he shines, for me, as innocence and determination combined. And Julianne Hough -what a revelation !! I mean, we knew she could dance. But, as an actress, she blew me away !!! And what a find in Miles Teller. He was hip, cool, and funny all at the same time.

I don't see this rendition of Footloose as a would-be replacement of the original. I see it as a new interpretation of a story that will never grow old. And, as such, I welcome it, I embrace it, and I commend it.

Two great versions of the same story!! Who could ask for anything more?

At first when I read about Footloose being remade, I wasn't very happy about it because I grew up watching Kevin Bacon in the original one. I thought he did a very good job. I looked into it more and more on the internet and found out about it more. I found out that it was going to be country and not rock like the first one. it was going to be a little different but still have the same characters and the same plot. I saw previews and thought, why not give it a try since the main star, Kenny Wormald, looked pretty good in it. I took my eight year old son to it when it first came out to theaters and had a blast watching it. A couple weeks later, I took the whole family to it because I liked it so much. There are some remakes that they shouldn't touch but this one, was a good one because you cant really say remake to this...its just a country version of it. Some people dont like rock so if you are one of those country types, a Kenny Wormald fan(like me) or just a movie lover, this movie is for you.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

If you are a serious fan of horror films or you already have the bare-bones DVD version of TCM 2 then you need to buy the Gruesome Edition now. Comparing Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 to the original or the other sequels/remakes is pointless because this film is a beast all its own. It was made to be different than the first and Tobe Hooper lived up to it. It is quite obvious that this film is camp, but thats what makes it so great. The absurdness, the heavy gore(lovingly provided by legend Tom Savini), the rockin' soundtrack(The Cramps, Concrete Blonde), and the action just makes this one of my favorite horror movies ever. The performances are completley memorable. Bill Mosley's Chop-Top character is one of the funniest and most iconic roles ever. Caroline Williams is one hell of a shrieker and plays the part of Stretch to a T. The locations and set pieces really gives this film an epic feel, especially the amazing underground lair of the Sawyer Family. The only horror fans that I can imagine that wouldnt like TCM II are those who like "serious" horror only or purists of the original. This was made for the American horror fan. I mean come on, dueling chainsaw battles between Dennis Hopper(Blue Velvet, River's Edge) and Leatherface? This is the stuff dreams are made of. The original carries the "classic" disturbing value, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 takes the cake as far as entertainment value is concerned.

The extras are great. The 90 minute interview segments with the actors/filmakers is great. Bill Johnson(Leatherface), Bill Mosely(Chop-Top), and Caroline Williams(Stretch) recall their fond memories and share great stories on this wonderful flick. The great Tom Savini also shares his memories on working on the film and creating the gore. The deleted scenes arent overly amazing, but the underground parking lot jock slaughter scene was FUNNY! You just have to see it. That and it was funny to know that Joe Bobb Briggs was going to have a role in the film. Bottom line is that this DVD is a must have. Nuff said.

Most people don't realize what a genius Tobe Hooper really is. When Tobe Hooper created the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" in 1974, he created a terrifying, horror masterpiece that set the standards for slasher films to come. Tobe also realized something that most other horror producers never figured out; you can't sell the same movie twice. That's why many horror franchises continued drop box office sales lower and lower with every single sequel they made. Tobe realized that audiences get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. He knew he could not top the masterpiece he created, so he created another form of masterpiece. "Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2" is an over the top thrill ride that will entertain you from begining to end. Whereas the first TCM provided shere terror,TCM2 provided thrills, excessive gore, and it's own brand of dark humor. The film is pure genius, and provides an epic conclusion to the events that had unfolded over a decade earlier.

The amazing thing is that this was truly the end of the series. Tobe Hooper ended the film in such away that it was impossible for any of it's characters to return. "Leatherface: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 3" failed to explain how Leatherface returned for another movie after being killed off in TCM2. The only film in the series worth watching after TCM2, is "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2004)," the remake. Another thing worth noting, is that Tobe Hooper has a way of creating colorful characters that stand-out and sell the movie. The sequels that followed TCM2 all had very bland characters. Chop-top steals the scenes as much as Leatherface in TCM2, and who could forget the Hitchhiker in the first TCM. So do yourselves a favor, and check this movie out.

Now if only MGM studios will get in gear and release this masterpiece on blu-ray, and give it the royal treatment it deserves.

This is a really hard film to review. The reason being is that this in no way even comes close to the brilliance of the first film, but is still a lot better then most other 80's slashers.

One of the leads "Lefty", is played by the famous Dennis Hopper. Oddly enough, I feel he gives the worst performance out of the whole cast, and seeing him in that (way too small) cowboy outfit is one of the funniest, and strangest things I've ever seen.

The man that plays "Leatherface" is obviously a lot smaller then Gunnar Hanson and it definitely effects the feel of the film. Not to mention he actually has feelings in this one, and dispite multiple chances to knock off the protaginist, he somehow refrains from chopping her up into little pieces (WTF!!!!!). He also swings the chainsaw over his head like an freakin idiot.

This movie also has comedic elements, that in my opinion do not fit the classic, disturbing, Texas Chainsaw feel in any way.

Now that I've gotten MOST of the bad things about this film out of the way, I will talk about the good things.

The obvious thing this movie has going for it are the special effects done by the one and only, Tom Savini. Which are to say the least, extremely impressive. There is a fair amount of gore in this one, but the most impressive effects are the set pieces (body parts, skin laying around, bodies of past victims, ect).

The lead character "Stretch" is definitely a sight for sore eyes! She has thighs of steel, and I did not mind looking at her throughout the duration of the film, at all!!!

The first time I watched this, I dismissed it as a disgrace to the series, but the second time around, I actually enjoyed it more than most slashers made around this time period, and felt I was a little hard on it.

Overall, if your expecting the brutal realism of the first film, you will be extremely dissapointed, but if your just lookin for a fun, cheesy, 80's flick, you will most likely find this one, at the very least, an enjoyable film to watch.

If you're looking for a movie about the human spirit, or a movie that can change the world... then find something else. If you're looking for a brutal and disturbing slasher flick that's both ridiculous and cheesy (but is still a good time), then "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is the perfect thing for you. From the original source behind "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," Tobe Hooper brings forth a disgusting and sometimes humorous sequel that will make you feel guilty for enjoying it.

Dennis Hopper plays a Texas Ranger, Lefty, who's bent on revenge and wants compensation in blood for the murder of his brother's children (from the original movie). A radio DJ may be his only hope of getting the murderers responsible, as she claims to have a tape of one of the murders taking place. The tape happened when a couple of goofballs decided to call her show, only to end up running into a chainsaw murderer and ending up dead. Lefty advises her to play the tape on air to draw the killer or killers out... the only problem is that the cannibalistic family has a record of "taking care" of witnesses in their own way. The results all lead up to a terribly disturbing and disgusting slasher flick that you won't forget (even if you want to).

Now, the movie is enjoyable if you take these few things under consideration: 1) This movie was not made with hopes of making it on the AFI list of Greatest Movies one day. 2) It doesn't live up to the original, so don't even think of setting your expectations that high. 3) This is a ridiculous and sometimes cheesy movie that its only purpose is really to shock, disgust, and perhaps even get a rise out of you. If you take all of these things into account, the chances of you enjoying this movie will increase.

What really makes the movie work is Dennis Hopper. He is usually a joy to watch in any movie, and this one is no exception. I don't know if the movie would be that great had he not been in it, as he really takes his character to the limit (and has fun in the process). The sequel is much more disgusting and violent than the original, but isn't really as shocking. Still, it is a pretty enjoyable flick if you're in the right mood and take it for what it is.

The DVD doesn't have a whole lot to offer, although I don't think a lot of special features are needed for a movie like this. The picture and sound quality is decent, but you really don't want a "great looking" picture with a movie like this. It adds the raw feeling to it better when the picture looks grainy and imperfect. The DVD offers both widescreen and standard versions of the movie. The only special feature that's included is the theatrical trailer for the movie (which isn't all that great).

All in all, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is a great time if you know what you are getting yourself into and you know what to expect. Again, this is not "Citizen Kane" we're talking about; this is a stupid and goofy slasher flick that's only aim is some kind of entertainment. And, I happen to think that it achieves that, at least in my eyes. If you're looking for a goofy and disturbing slasher flick, this may be the one for you.

Runaway Bride (2013)

Contrary to what some might say this movie is wonderfully romantic as well as well written. It may be predictable but the acting and the dialog make for a movie well worth your time to see. Unlike most movies today Runaway Bride, has no sex scenes or other trash Hollywood uses to get ratings. Good show for everyone!

Enough already with the vulgar nonsense that almost all the movies these days have! This one is even better then Notting Hill! It was very cute, it was reserved though, no sexual content or nasty language, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere once again, pair up as a great couple in a wonderful movie! I would suggest this to anyone of any age!

Journalist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is desperate for a column as a matter of fact, he has to submit one to his editor (Rita Wilson) in less than 90 minutes. So, when a drunken gentleman in a bar hears his dilemna, he offers the story of a woman in his hometown who has this tendency to leave men at the altar, at the last possible moment. With an extra minute or two of research, he submits a column degrading this "runaway bride" as a "maneater" just in time for publication. Meanwhile, back in little town USA, Hale, MD, the "runaway bride" (Julia Roberts) reads the column and her complaints of inaccuracy result in Ike's termination. With the help of best friend and editor's husband, Fisher (Hector Elizondo), Ike heads down to Hale, MD to find out the truth. Hence, the movie "Runaway Bride" continues in such a hysterical fashion that you are prone to laugh approximately every 30 seconds for the remainder of this 2 hour movie. Director Garry Marshall manages to nearly exceed his stint 10 years ago directing Gere, Roberts and Elizondo in "Pretty Woman" by developing each character to the hilt, giving us little quirks of each one to think about continuously. Gere and Roberts attain the same level of chemistry as before but, this time, they have help from Peggy Fleming, owner of the beauty parlor (Joan Cusack, in yet another role of amazing hilarity), Mrs. Pressman, the owner of the town diner (an adorable minor role, perfected by Jane Morris), the I-shouldn't-be-single single cousin Cindy (Kathleen Marshall, with one of the best one-liners in the movie), and Betty Trout, the owner of the town bakery (an exceedingly funny Laurie Metcalf, formerly of TV's 'Roseanne'). Of course, to not mention Maggie's father, the alcoholic Walter (Paul Dooley) and her sex-obsessed grandma (Jean Schertler) would be a sin. Overall, Marshall assembled the best supporting cast of 1999, making for one crazy, funny movie with an adorable plot, not to mention an incredible soundtrack with classics by U2, Billy Joel, and Hall and Oates, as well as new songs by Shawn Colvin, Eric Clapton, Martina McBride, and 2 songs by grammy goddesses, the Dixie Chicks. Let's put it this way: this movie is perfect. Please don't miss it!

This film reunited Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in a film that is more of a miss than a hit. The plot isn't that well developed feeling contrived and boring at times. The music is the only bright spot, and it is a must have. The chemistry that Roberts and Gere are so well known for is sadly missing. They looked like they weren't even having fun making it. Even the superb supporting cast cannot save this film.

Trotsky

"The Trotsky" is one of those films that I wholeheartedly loved for at least half of its running time. A deliciously dark comedy about a Canadian youth who imagines he's the reincarnation of Russian revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky, this film begins as a strong satire of idealism gone awry. The running joke, throughout, is that our hero has very little to rebel against--he's just in love with the idea that he is a relevant trailblazer. But, in fact, he's no trailblazer at all. He's just trying to mirror his life according to the facts of Trotsky's existence--right down to his love life. It's a sly and smart skewering of politics and teen rebellion. The fact that his activism has very little real world context is quite amusing as there is no obvious cause to be fought. But just as the picture had won me over--a subtle shift starts occurring and we're meant to take this arbitrary and absolutely meaningless struggle seriously. A completely implausible, and somewhat creepy, romantic entanglement doesn't help. Once I felt like the movie was asking me to embrace the student as a hero, my good will went south pretty quickly as the movie didn't seem to be in on its own joke anymore.

Jay Baruchel capably plays our wannabe revolutionary. The film begins as he organizes a hysterically inept hunger strike at his father's factory. The early family scenes work equally well as Baruchel verbally spars with his father (a great Saul Rubinek). The twist of seeing this privileged youth fighting for the teeming masses elicits many laugh out loud moments as he is seemingly disconnected from the hypocrisy of his lifestyle. His father takes a page from the real Trotsky and forces his son to attend (gasp!) public school. However, this being Canada--the school is quite lovely. For no discernible reason (slight dress code infractions are the only real issues apparent), a campaign to start an actual union to represent students is initiated. Still quite funny, the film has our hero rallying the troops for the most spectacularly inane rebellion. Soon, however, the film starts to take things a bit far and the student's apathy may turn to support. Why? Because school isn't fun. That ends up being the unifying force. Deep, huh?

Amidst the increasing nonsense, Baruchel stalks a 27 year old graduate student. Let's just say this really didn't add to my good will because you can imagine where this storyline is headed. And it's not a good place! Baruchel never comes to terms with the fact he's been an ungrateful tool to his father, but let's not dwell on the negative. Baruchel starts off as a awkwardly out-of-place antihero, but by the end--I found him insufferably self-involved AND we're meant to admire him for it! This satire started at a rollicking four stars for its first hour and ended at two stars for its shift of tone. A true disappointment. I guess I'll split the difference. It's a shame--I'd recommend the first hour to anyone, but I ended up hating it! KGHarris, 3/11.
