Gentlemen Broncos (2009)

Gentlemen BroncosI had seen reviews for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes and rated on IMDB and can't understand why it got such horrible reviews. I just watched this movie tonight and found it absolutely hilarious from start to finish. Clement and Rockwell are great, and Mike White makes me bust out laughing in every scene he is in. This is an exceedingly original film, I can't think of anything to compare it to off the top of my head, and the fact that Cher and the Scorpions are both in the soundtrack makes all the more loopy. PLEASE GIVE THIS MOVIE A CHANCE!

As soon as I heard about Jared Hess' latest project, I was excited to see it even before the Dr. Chevalier viral videos were released.

So I was a tad let down to hear the negative buzz surrounding the film, and to discover it wouldn't be playing in any nearby theaters.

Even still, I decided to take a chance and purchase it on BluRay instead of renting. I'm one of the minority who really liked not only Napoleon Dynamite, but ALSO enjoyed Nacho Libre (typical response to Nacho Libre was poor). So I figured Gentlemen Broncos was a safe bet. ...and it turns out that it was!

Admittedly, there are a couple of "what the heck" scenes (particularly those involving Halley Feiffer) which I think some will find a bit off-putting if not totally repulsive, but overall the film is chock full of hilarious gems. (The PG-13 rating was due primarily to crude humor. There was one instance where "ape sh**" was used, but no swearing beyond that.)

I thought all of the characters were very well-played by their respective actors. Jemaine Clement's Ronald Chevalier is often cited as the show-stealer, and for good reason, but I found myself wanting to see more of Sam Rockwell's Bronco character. His near-hillbilly (fantastic southern accent) action hero portrayal was delightful to watch. I laughed hysterically at his "What the crap?!" reaction upon waking up in Daysius' lab.

It did seem like there could've been more extra features, but maybe that was because I'd seen many of them (the "Webspots") online prior to the release. The behind-the-scenes was a treat, which I would also liked to have seen more of, but the outtakes made up for it.

I went into this movie knowing NOTHING about it. And I LOVED it. For me personally this is Hess' best film. It's incredibly quirky, there are so many great moments. Sam Rockwell is comic gold. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who liked his other films at all.

I would also like to say that I think the price of the DVD is pretty ridiculous and will inevitably spurn piracy. I am torn about buying it. I want a copy pretty badly but I don't know if I should wait the price out or not.

I just finished watching this movie. It was hilarious. Every single character in the movie has something about them that makes me laugh out loud. Sam Rockwell was great switching from the macho Bronco to the effeminate Brutus. I loved the use of low quality special effects, and I loved the location of the movie. Everything about it reeked of late 70s and early 80s.

I loved how cluelessly sleazy the characters are (Especially the guardian angel!)

I saw that this film got negative reviews, which is why I gave it a chance. The majority of people do not seem to embrace the kind of humor that I adore. I love humor that is dry, and weird, and uncomfortable. This movie does not disappoint in that department.

If you like awkward, dorky movies that are off the beaten path, then this is the movie for you.

I'm one of the rare viewers who thinks the Hess' movies are getting better with each one. Anyone who was into sci-fi/fantasy books as a kid should get a good laugh at the lampooning of sci-fi kitch. Clement is perfectly cast as Chevalier and Rockwell is hilariously dry in his roles as Bronco/Brutus. I can't believe the studio bailed on this film without giving it a chance for the public -especially college-aged kids -to check it out. But it will eventually become a cult classic on DVD.

Look Who's Talking

Look Who's Talking"Look Who's Talking" is probably my favorite film with Kirstie Alley, my favorite film with John Travolta (though "Grease" comes close) and my favorite film with Bruce Willis (though I'm not exactly a fan of his). It's funny, it's romantic, it's got some innovative special effects, a couple of car chases, and John Travolta even gets to fly a plane (which he must have really enjoyed at the time!).

Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, an accountant who has an office affair with one of her clients (George Segal), and ends up getting pregnant. It wasn't planned, and she's a little ashamed of the source, but Mollie soon warms to the idea of having a baby. After a traumatic day late in the preganacy, Mollie goes into labor in the middle of the bustling streets of New York, and takes a cab driven by the easy going James (John Travolta). Though it's not really what he wants to do (he wants to be a pilot) he's very good at driving a cab, and gets Mollie there very quickly. She has the baby, Mikey, and he's something of a thinker (voice/thoughts spoken by Bruce Willis), wondering to himself what this strange world around him is, and who these strange people around him are. He starts to grow up as time goes on, and Mollie decides to look for a father. She made a mistake, and she owes it to Mikey to find him a Dad. She dates here, she dates there, but could the right Dad be staring her in the face this whole time?

Everyone plays their part well, and the plot flows really nicely, bit of action, bit of a thoughtful moment, bit of a laugh. It's a romatic comedy of sorts, and it's a funny look at early motherhood, it's interesting seeing both happening at the same time. It's one of those films I can watch again and again, and have done over the years. The soundtrack is great too, a mixture of some older pop hits and contemporary 1980s tunes (including "Dumb Things" by Australian musician Paul Kelly during the taxi labor scene, a song I really like).

Overall, it's a sweet and funny little film, a definitely worth a look for fans of anyone in it. Recommended.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING actually did very well when it came out. I think these amazon people take things too seriously or don't have kids, or have such stressful lives they can't enjoy any kind of humor these movies have. I even enjoyed it when it came out and i was still in elementary school. My mom enjoyed it, and she loved babies and everything that had to do with babies and kids. Parents would enjoy this movie, not all but most. I'm not even one of those "kid lovers" I like kids, but not obsessed or anything like many kid lovers are. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING is a simple comedy with many funny parts like when kirstie alley's voice turned into a devil voice as she went into labor, because of the pain. To me, and my mom that part was hilarious and many women could relate to that because giving birth is no picnic, especially when it's your first baby. I've never given birth, but i've heard the stories. Anyways, i also read many amazon people's reviews about how horrible look who's talking too was, i'm thinkin' what is wrong with people nowadays? That was a cute movie too, the baby girl was as cute as a button, and the acting wasn't bad. I dont understand that. And at the end when mikey took his baby sisters's hand and they walked, and you could see her wobbling, and that cute baby walk which is so cute words can't describe, and the song i got you babe added to the moment. What's not to love, that was an adorable ending all i could say was AWWWWWW!!! people need to lighten up, especially if you wanna be good parents. Try to enjoy life, and not take things so seriously. These movies were basically about that. All those little funny and heartwarming moments when your kid is born and starts to grow and learn. But LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW i must agree with the others because it was horrible. It doesn't make sense frankly, the first two films were about talking babies, why go to dogs? I like dogs and everything buy WHY? It's almost embarassing to watch. Kind of absurd and yes the acting was horrific, and cheeesy script, and everything in the film was flat out stupid. What next talking furniture and appliances lol. But the first two are still great films, and john travolta is one of my favorite actors, and elias koteas who was in number two was funny, like he was in some kind of wonderful.

Buy Look Who's Talking Now

I've loved this movie since I was young, and didn't get half the jokes. A lot of the jokes are aimed at the adult audience, rather than teaching kids how they came into the world it wasn't by a stork!

With all the recent bad press about Kirstie Alley's weight gain, it's good to watch her, when she was still reasonably slim. And she looks great in this film. Especially when she does the little dance, while feeding Mikey, and John Travolta walks in.

Although John Travolta will never be as good as he was in Grease, this is one of those movies, where he provides the laughs, and genuinely looks quite nice especially when he has the bruise, after Mikey's real dad hits him with a phone! (You just wanna kiss him all better!) His love of beer and fast food is beginning to show in this, as he has a little stomach, which then becomes a big stomach for Pulp Fiction!

I'm never quite sure as Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey. When I was younger, I probably didn't see a lot of Bruce Willis in movies, and still to this day, I don't really recognise his voice. He's trying too hard to have a high voice, and sure, on certain words, he lets slip, and you can hear its him. But it just doesn't sound like him.

This is a terrific film, to watch as a youngster, and as an adult, and be able to appreciate the sexual chemistry between John & Kirstie. It's funny, and although, the sequels aren't as good, when are they? I just have to get the second one on DVD now!

Going the Distance

Going the DistanceJust finished watching the movie.

Short rant:

This film is rated R. I have read through the reviews here, about people only watching 10 minutes of the film and turning it off due to language... If you look at the rating on this page and on the box itself, it is rated R for language, some drug use, and sex. If you are sensitive to the F word, sexual images, drugs, *and* you are trying to watch this movie with your family, then you are doing something wrong. Also the "I expected better of Drew" comments... actors try new things. Yes, Drew Barrymore has done lots of romcom chick flicks that you can watch with your preteen, but you might take notice that they are by and large PG-13, not R. If you are sensitive and/or watching this with your family or young ones, it is *your* responsibility to read the rating, not blindly watch a movie expecting it to adhere to your standards.

/end rant

As for the movie, the beginning introduces us to Garrett (Justin Long), who is newly single as a result of a funny miscommunication with his (now ex) girlfriend, and a summer intern, Erin (Drew Barrymore), who is working for the New York Sentinel newspaper while on break from grad school at Stanford. They meet at a bar and hit it off in a really unique way--over an interrupted game of Centipede; our female lead is the reigning champion on the arcade game's score board, and our male lead the interrupter and runner-up. It was unusual enough for me to take notice and expect a different kind of movie! The two leads hit off while a countdown starts running on the 6 weeks Erin has left before her summer internship is over.

Garrett has a conversation in the local bar with his friends before he meets Erin about how he didn't cry over losing his girlfriend, that maybe he didn't care enough about her to do so. This is something to keep in mind over the movie... I paid a lot of attention to the characters' faces throughout.

The movie tests out different features of long distance relationships: loneliness, texting, skyping, phone sex, jealousy over sexy coworkers, etc. Probably the most interesting topic addressed by the movie is career vs. relationship. There is a marked push-and-pull between these two competing interests, and it is interesting how the two main characters resolve this conflict.

So many things give this movie its quirky charm. Garrett's roommate, Dan, listens through Garrett's walls and tries to DJ his hookups; Erin's sister is a clean-freak and germaphobe; Garrett's other friend has an obsession with snagging an older woman using his mustache; Erin's niece Maya is a little monster ("Maya, STATUE!" haha); and Garrett has a Top Gun fetish.

Several funny moments punctuate the film and make it a fun experience. I would recommend this movie to you if you like off-beat humor, don't mind the R rating (language, sex, and drugs), and want to see a a rom-com that takes on long distance relationships. If you liked Knocked Up [Blu-ray], The Hangover (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray], and He's Just Not That Into You [Blu-ray], you'll probably like this one. On a personal note, I'm getting married in three months to a man I've been seeing for 2+ years, nearly one of which was long distance, so I definitely resonated with a lot of the funny moments in the film.

Short Attention Span Summary:

1. Guy meets girl.

2. Girl moves away.

3. The two try to carry on a long distance relationship, and the conflict is (of course) the effect of the distance on their relationship.

This movie was good all the way through, and while the content was chick-ish, it did provide many a good laugh. The writing was very good and the characters were well cast.

It would be worth the price of a second hand DVD to me. (As it happens, I saw this film on a plane included as part of the ticket.)

I usually do not write reviews on sites such as this but felt like I should for this film (considering that roughly a third of the reviewers have given it a 1). I know that film is subjective but I can objectively say that you are a moron if you gave this movie a 1.

A few reviewers attributed their low rating of the film in part due to the "bad language" in it. Well the film is rated R "for sexual content including dialogue, language throughout, some drug use and brief nudity", can you people read...do you not bother looking at a film's rating before you watch it. If you do not want to watch a film because it has bad language in it then fine, don't watch it, and definately don't give it a bad review for it.

Also, a couple people pointed out that the film was "cliche"...people pointing out how something is cliche has become cliche at this point. Let me tell you something: at this point everything is cliche, everything has been done before. Whether or not it is done well is what I care about when watching a film.

In my opinion this film was well written, directed, and acted. Yes, there was bad language in the film but guess what? Most 20-somethings swear, I actually liked this aspect of the film...it gave it an added sense of realism. I personally thought the dialog was sharp and witty, much better written than your average romantic comedy. I like films that have a little edge to them and this film had that.

Regarding the acting, I thought everyone did a very good job. I don't watch a lot of Drew Barrymore movies but I thought she was very good in this as was Justin Long. They both are very natural on film and seem to have good chemistry. I also like that they both look like they could be your neighbor which is very far from standard in these kind of films. The supporting cast was great as well. Sudeikis and Charlie Day were very solid as Justin Long's friends. If you saw Horrible Bosses than you know how well they work together.

Now don't expect a lot of belly laughs from this, I found the film to be much more humorous than laugh out loud funny. That being said, I would rather watch a film that is consistenly humorous than one that has a couple of big laughs but drags the rest of the time.

So, in closing, I would say the film is a 4 out of 5 but I'm giving it a 5 because of all the 1 star reviews. Give it a chance it was much better than I was expecting from the trailers/reviews.

It was surprisingly really funny. I am usually very critical of romantic comedies, but I really enjoyed watching Going the Distance. It is one you can watch over and over again and still laugh and enjoy it each time. It was just cute, smart, and witty, qualities such movies are lacking these days. Watch it, its worth it, and you will not be bored. Sooo Funnny :)

I am shocked that more people didn't respond to this one. It's a great movie with a hilarious supporting cast and cute love story too. It would make a good date movie or just watch it alone even, why not...Justin Long is adorable and the chemistry between the two main characters is obvious and nice to see on screen. Not bad at all & I definitely got a few laughs. This one's worth it...four stars!

Dance Flick (2013)

Dance FlickFirst of all, u need to know that Dance Flick is a PARODY/SPOOF movie. Meaning it's a movie that is poking fun at OTHER movies/storylines. If u watch this and don't know that then you will definitely not understand what it is they're making fun of. If u haven't at least seen the movie "Save The Last Dance" before u watch this, then Dance Flick will seem like a big inside joke that you don't get. With that being said, there are some funny moments crammed in here, but the question is are they funny enough to outweigh the unfunny moments? The part where Megan's mom gets hit by 3 cars and then as the cars drive off separately u see LINDSAY, BRANDY, and then HALLE on the license tags all got a laugh out of me, i can't lie.

One problem is it tries to spoof WAY too many movies, it should have stuck with the whole dance spoof theme. The concept of spoofing the never ending saga of recent dance movies like Step Up & Stomp The Yard is actually brilliant idea, and could have been a very good parody movie because there's so much u can make fun of with those.

I am a person who appreciates a good parody movie but the problem here is Dance Flick relies too much on the nasty/gross jokes and the lead actress could not act that well. She tried hard to impersonate the leading chick from Save The Last Dance but came off unnatural. The best part of this movie is Essence Atkins as Charity, trust me, she's the reason this is even getting 3 stars from me. She was hilarious in this. Because of her, and a few other parts ("they call me Edward Triggerhands fam!!!"), it's worth checking out, but it would've been much better if it stuck to the dance parodies theme all throughout and if Shoshanna Bush's acting had been stronger.

Background:

The Wayan brothers are well known for their comedy/spoof genre movies. Between 2001 and 2006 they produced the Scary Movie Series (4 movies). With all the recent successful dance based movies such as: Save the Last Dance, Step Up, Stomp the Yard and You Got Served, the Wayans decided to produce Dance Flick as a spoof of all these movies.

While the idea was certainly original, this film was not well executed. Firstly, it is just too short, only 83 minutes. Next the storyline did not gel properly, it seemed like they were trying to force too much into too small a space, the result being that the actors were left on a lurch trying to make everything appear to be funny.

The biggest let down of this movie is the excessive dependence on the gross jokes. They relied way too much on these, in this movie they really pushed the bar too much on the gross jokes. This was the really killer for this film.

The Spoof:

A poor guy, Thomas Uncles (Damon Wayans Jr.) teams up with Megan White (Shoshana Bush) and train together with the object being to win a dance competition.

Breakdance routines are uniquely embellished with CG to make the impossible happen. There are some hilarious moments that will crack you up. But there are other parts, that are meant to be funny, but may only serve to gross you out.

Conclusion:

This film had a tremendous potential, however, the lack of a well developed storyline and the overly gross jokes, limited its true potential.

Buy Dance Flick (2013) Now

I was primed to give this a much lower rating as it was not that funny, but then I watched all of the special features and bumped it up a couple stars. The parody film run still appears to be trudging ahead with three more spoof films this quarter alone; This one has what appears to be the majority of the Wayans family involved (I counted 15 total on cast and crew). I laughed more at the little background stuff people will skip over (tap water labeling, the Cheney tanker, the school posters) as the sight gags did nothing for me. The writing got a few good jokes in there but I suppose growing up in the Airplane era of spoofs has me jaded as to what is funny in farce films.

The Blu quality is excellent, even in the night/action/dance scenes. The DTS is used extensively and obviously by a soundtrack listing your sub gets a significant test. They apparently had the budget to make this sound and look good so you get your money's worth from that avenue. The special features include:

* Making of: 21 minutes of background story, creative process, filming and the usual stuff; lots of Wayans being interviewed.

* Deleted Scenes: 8:15 minutes of rightfully cut material except for the alternate ending. The whole white vs. black suburban dance off was way better than what was in the film, give it a viewing, good music also.

* Dancing Outtakes: 2:26 clip of the Apple Bottom Jeans song dance off not in the film some of the best dancing I have seen on film with the exception of Rize. I was really impressed with the athleticism being shown, better than anything in the film; disappointing that the dancers will not get much credit except for a Wayans brother film outtake. It is edited to the length of the song.

The Unrated is 5:13 minutes longer than the PG13, and honestly, I could not watch the rated version as two viewings of this would be painful sober. One for the film, two for the BD quality and supplements. Enjoy.

I can keep this review simply by saying this movie was very bad! Low brow and not in a good way. Watching this one can easily understand why the scary movie franchise only became funny when the Wayans brothers left and the Zuckers took over!

This movie was great, it made fun of all the best dance movies that i love including 1 in particular that i didn't really think of as a "dance flick"... TWILIGHT when he tells her she needs to see him in the light and then turns around OMG i almost fell off the couch to funny.. and I'm an avid twifan so ya. The wayans brothers are fantastic in every movie they make or act in together.. One more favorite seen. When Shawn Wayans comes to see his babies mamma, she asks what he wants he says he is here to pick up his son so he goes over picks him up for a second tells him "daddy loves you" sits him back down and tells Essence Atkins (charity) that he will be back next weekend to pick him up again then leaves. Charity shuts the door and says "he's such a good father"... LOL what a great movie LOVE IT

Cheeky! (2000)

Cheeky!Cult Epics is turning out fantastic blu-rays these days that are miles better than their old DVDs. No more PAL-NTSC conversion issues, or any of the other crap that plagued their DVDs.

The blu-ray is great! Incredible image. The detail is amazing. The colors are great. It looks like film. Audio is good with an option for English dub or Italian language with English subtitles.

As far as the film...wow, lead star is gorgeous! And, yes, she's AMAZING in high definition! And Tinto Brass directed, co-wrote it, so it's certainly sleazy, yet with a happy, lightweight attitude.

If you have the DVD, throw it away and order this blu-ray! The quality of the upgrade is outstanding. Seriously.

Now, hopefully they'll bring some of their other back catalog to high definition (like Tinto Brass and The Beast to start with...)

If you don',t have this movie in blu-ray, get it right away. The picture clarity is outstanding. The dvd isn,t bad, but the blu-ray is much better. This movie is filled with beautiful women and they,re naked almost the entire movie. The sex isn',t graphic, but extemely close. Camara angles and dialogue make up for what you don,t see.The women were physically appealing to me because they were very curvey, and they all had natural breast.I was particulary attracted to Cheeky,s girlfriend, the one who was trying to find Cheeky an apartment. She was very attractive, and again, not big but had curves on top of curves.

Anyone familiar with the work of Tinto Brass can imagine the light romp in store here. This is perhaps my favourite of his naughty stories, as it does not try to be anything other than a lighthearted visual ride. From the opening scenes of everyone in a park up to some hanky panky, to the more steamy, sauna, lesbian scenes, the tone is just right for uncomplicated enjoyment. It seems everyone in Italy does not wear knickers, and a fine thing too.

The bluray tranfer is noticeably better than the old DVD in my library.

She's the One (2012)

She's the OneFrancis (Mike McGlone) and Mickey (Edward Burns) are brothers with different views on life and happiness. These views have been heavily influenced by their father (John Mahoney) through the years, with his, "you come first" attitude.

Mr. Fitzpatrick lives near the ocean and owns a boat, wherein the father and brothers visit and go fishing often.

Mickey is an down to earth and likable guy without much ambition who drives a cab. Brother Francis is not so likable. He is a successful stockbroker whose standing joke is that his brother is the only English speaking cab driver in New York.

Francis is pretentious and conniving, the opposite of Mickey, who is easy going and modest. That they were raised by the same parents seems to be a fluke.

Francis also is a cheating husband. He is married to and bored with Renee (Jennifer Aniston), who cannot figure out why Francis never wants to have sex anymore. Francis, nice guy that he is does not want to cheat on his mistress with his wife.

However, the same can't be said for his mistress, Heather (Cameron Diaz) who doesn't even try to hide the fact from Francis that she is sleeping around. The naughty Heather, for the record, was once engaged to Mickey, until he caught her naked asleep with another man in their apartment.

Meanwhile our happy go lucky cab driver, Mickey, surprises everyone when he marries one of his fares, a mere twentyfour hours after meeting her. Her name is Hope (Maxine Bahns) and Mickey and Hope have every intention of making their marriage work, despite what everyone, especially Francis thinks.

And so the stage is set for some clever if not hilarious situations.

This is a comedy, not a rip snortin funny movie but it does have it's clever humorous moments and it's sort of like a fable too, with a lesson to be learned for those paying attention.

This is a funny, captivating, and worthwhile film. Although it isn't a blockbuster, it certainly has more substance than a lot of films today.Ed Burns is endearing and charming as a cabbie who bases most of his decision on emotions, rather than sense, and yet he comes out winnng in the end. Cameron Diaz is delightfully evil as his ex-fiancee, certainly a much different role than the loveable girl next door roles she played in "My Best Friends Wedding" and "There's Something About Mary" Although she has only a small role Jennifer Anniston is also great as Renee, a wife who looks for a reason as to why her husband is no longer interested in her. The film has many dynamics that I feel are explord quite nicely, mainly family, sibling rivalry, and love in the real world. This film is a definite find!

Buy She's the One (2012) Now

The script is sometimes funny because of the conflict between two brothers from different worlds. They are "in love" with the wrong woman most of the time. Cameron Diaz is beautiful but sometimes you feel that she flashes that smile to cover her lack of acting skills. Jennifer Aniston is just the opposite: she is pretty but she concentrates her energy on her acting. The picture has more drama than some seem to pick up on. This is not just a funny film. It says alot about our family and social values today. Burns does a good job on this and his acting and Aniston's make it worthwhile to see.

I am not sure why Jennifer Annistan got top billing over her much better female conterparts (Cameron Diaz and Maxine Bahns). This was a very different movie about two brothers and their father who they like to go fishing with. One brother (Francis) seems to have it all (a successful Wall Street career with Jennifer Anniston as a wife) while the other brother (Mickey)lives in a dump of an apartment with no tv (his ex-girlfriend Cameron Diaz didn't give it back to him when she ended their relationship by cheating on him) and drives a New York cab for a living. Francis doesn't seem to be satisfied and is constantly jealous of his poorer brother because his brother is the happier of the two. He is also carrying on affair with Heather (Cameron Diaz, who he doesn't realize was Mickey's ex).

One day Mickey picks up Hope (Michelle Bahns) in his taxi, who is late to catch a flight to Tennessee or some state closeby. There is a mutual attraction between the two right away and Hope is afraid to just let Mickey drive her to the airport so instead offers that he drive her all the way to her southern destination. The two end up getting married on the trip.

When Mickey and Hope get back, Hope's friend reminds her that she is supposed to move to Paris and did she mention that to Mickey before getting married? Hope says that she is waiting for the right time to let him know.

Things get dicey as Mickey meets up with Heather one more time. She thinks it is to re-kindle what they had. His only purpose is to get his tv back.

After Mickey get his tv his brother starts to figure out that Heather was in fact Mickey's ex-girlfriend and this makes him boil.

The story then has to resolve all the strained relationships if they can be. The story seems to break down some towards the end and that is why I did not rate it higher. Also, I was not sure if this was supposed to be a romance, a comedy or something else.

Well if your significant other makes you watch this relationship film remember that at least Cameron Diaz looks beautiful; Jennifer Aniston looks beautiful; the brother's father John Mahoney was also TV sitcom's Frazier's dad, but this time without the limp. Otherwise, no Oscar nominations for this two -hourstokill on a Saturday night, nowheretogo, no -one -around, bargain bin DVD. Three stars are a reach, but I wanted to be sensitive; after all, this is a film about relationships.

Wild Hogs (2007)

Wild HogsI am not one to usually write reviews on movies, and I can't stand the people who try to analyze every little aspect of movies and write novels of their opinions instead of just enjoying them for what they are entertainment!! That being said, I saw this with my mom, and I thought we would fall out of our chairs we were laughing so hard! I LOVE funny movies, and VERY rarely do I see one that makes me laugh this hard, so I just had to write this since the critics were so awful to this movie. Travolta, Allen, Lawrence and Macy are great together, and I didn't know that Ray Liotta (one of my faves!) was in the movie. This just made it even better! The entire movie was excellent I can't wait to buy the DVD in August!

Wild Hogs is a typical midlife crisis movie. Four men, who have been friends for years and who suit up in leather and ride to the local bar and grill regularly to hang out, suddenly wonder what happened to their lives. They all realize, one by one, that they've hit middle age and fallen into a rut, and they decide to take a cross country trip on their bikes to get out of it.

This is one of the more entertaining movies I've seen in a while. What made it for me, however, was not the plot or even the comedic moments but rather the excellent performances by a great cast. John Travolta plays the cool-guy-in-a-midlife-crisis role perfectly, and Tim Allen pulls off his when-did-my-life-get-so-bland part flawlessly as well. Throw in great performances by Martin Lawrence, a man desperate to get out from under his overbearing wife's thumb, and William H. Macy, a geek who hopes he can FINALLY do something that will make him cool, and you've got a great group of main characters.

Macy's performance is probably the most surprisingly good of the bunch. He's downright hilarious in this movie as the 'rebel nerd.' And Ray Liotta is excellent as the villain, the antagonist who tries to refuse this group of "Wild Hogs" their right to ride on the grounds that they're not real bikers.

This is a very funny movie and is sure to keep you entertained. With a relatively unoriginal plot this may not have been a great film if not for the excellent cast, but these guys will have you cheering for the middle-aged suburbanite and longing for the open road yourself.

Instead of listening to the critics who have savaged this film, check it out yourself and you may actually enjoy it. It's a story that almost anyone 40 or older who has ever dreamed of riding a motorcycle can relate to. The central characters are four middle aged guys, Doug (Tim Allen), a dentist who hardly knows the meaning of fun anymore, Bobby (Martin Lawrence), a henpecked plumber, Woody (John Travolta), a lawyer who, with his supermodel wife and lucrative career, seems to have it all but has secretly fallen on hard times and Dudley (William H. Macy), an extremely naive, geeky computer programmer. The four decide, once and for all, to live a little and to take a cross country road trip on their Harleys. Along the way, they have a series of misadventures that really get interesting when they run into the Del Fuegos gang who's leader Jack (Ray Liotta) takes an immediate disliking to this bunch of yuppies pretending to be real bikers. The guys later find themselves in a situation where they have to truly rely on each other as men and as friends and where they have to really be open and honest with themselves and each other.

The only real fault I found with Wild Hogs was the interaction with the gay cop which could have been completely left out. However I found the film as a whole to be fun to watch and made me want to get myself a Hog and take a cross country trip myself. This movie doesn't take itself seriously (It's a comedy for Chrissake!) so the critics shouldn't either.

This is a cute movie, kind of a First Wives Club for men. A movie where aging professional guys go on a week long motorcycle riding trip to reclaim some of their youthful exuberance.

The movie is a funny parallel to real life, as the actors in this movie are also aging professionals looking to inject a little excitement back into their careers.

There are a number of humorous moments along the way, many of them involving the shy William Macy.

But John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, and Tim Allen turn in good performances as the other Hogs.

I also enjoyed the antagonist Del Fuego biker, played by Ray Liotta, and the charming cafe owner Marisa Tomei, who plays the potential love interest for Dudley (William Macy).

Watch this movie and take a break from the serious side of life. Let out your inner hog!

Hollywood needs to rediscover the lost art of movie comedy. "Wild Hogs" is "City Slickers on Harleys" minus the humor, inventiveness and overall good taste. The filmmakers take every conceivable wrong turn and waste a fine cast in the process. You may get a few chuckles from this inexplicable box-office smash, but you'll probably hate yourself in the morning.

Father of Invention (2010)

Father of InventionI can imagine the pitch session for Trent Cooper's satire "Father of Invention," and I'm willing to bet it was quite good. I have no doubt that you could cobble the ideas behind the film into a gut-busting parody on the age of infomercials. It's such a fantastic target as that industry exists almost solely on parodying itself. Sadly, though, the cleverness that you might expect going after such a rich and comical topic is not mined with very much efficiency in this film's screenplay. As Kevin Spacey kicks off the movie introducing some delightfully silly products, I thought we had a winner. But then the movie instantly takes you away from its funniest moments to set up a premise that I didn't believe for even one second. That's okay, though, I decided to go with the flow and see what kind of zany comic antics were in store. For my taste, though, the slapstick shenanigans and kicks to the groin didn't rate many laughs. There is a talented cast at work here: Kevin Spacey, Virginia Madsen, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville, Craig Robinson, and Camilla Belle. Sadly, however, the film is wildly uneven with obvious jokes and physical humor that fall flat and scenarios that don't make a lot of sense and/or aren't particularly amusing.

Spacey plays Robert Axle, a fabricator (not an inventor, but someone who puts two existing ideas together to make an even better product). Wildly successful, one of his triumphs ends up mutilating the consumers that have bought the item. The film asks us to believe that Spacey (a multi-millionaire) went to prison for eight years because of this and that his wife (Madsen) was allowed to keep half of his fortune untouched by lawsuits. Neither half of the preceding sentence was believable to me, but as it was the film's premise established in the first five minutes--I had to go with it. Apparently Spacey's corporate mismanagement was enough to have him treated like a hardened criminal and he is completely ostracized in the outside world. Still hoping for a clever comedy about how he gets back into the game, we are treated instead to a more lackluster story line of him trying to reconnect with his daughter (Belle). Of course, the movie is rife with wacky characters each more sketchily drawn than the last. When the screenplay is at a loss about how to get its next laugh (and they are few and far between), it goes for a cheap shot (aforementioned kicks to the groin, lesbian humor, slapstick pratfalls) that oftentimes have nothing to do with advancing the plot.

Eventually, the movie does get Spacey back into the business (with Knoxville as his partner in another turn of events that makes little sense). Finally hoping for some hard edged satire, the movie then wants to go soft and play out as a relationship drama. What has Spacey learned about his evil ways? And is it too late to reconnect with his daughter? At a launch party for a new idea, Spacey gives the most awkward, unprofessional and baffling speech imaginable that would absolutely be disastrous for his business partners, but (this being a movie) the crowd is rapturously enthused. Who says you can't have it all? Not funny enough by half already, any good will you might have goes south with these "lesson learned" moments.

Spacey does his best, it's nice to see him in a change-of-pace role. Knoxville in underutilized and underwriten. Madsen and especially Robinson (he's the only one I actually liked as a character) fare the best in terms of bringing a few laughs. Graham, a likable actress, is stranded in the piece's most obnoxious role. Seriously, I like all of these actors but the screenplay lets everyone down. I guess I'm still waiting for the great infomercial satire that I had hoped this would provide. Clumsy and unfunny, this takes a good idea and wants to be something for everyone when it should have attempted a scathing and hard-edged wit that befits its subject matter. A curious misfire recommended only if you are a passionate fan of one of the actors. KGHarris, 10/11.

The whole premise had me scratching my head. Corporate executives do not go to prison due to liability on their products even if they deliberately produce a product that will harm people. Ford Motor company proved that with their exploding Pinto. So now Kevin Spacey spends 8 years in prison and his family never comes to see him? Once you get past that...and I never really did, we end up with a movie that has some good scenes connected by a bad plot.

I didn't like Heather Graham defining herself as a lesbian to strangers. That was so unreal and not funny. The negative relationships and feelings that were rampant against Kevin Spacey, was not believable. Kevin played a guy whose only fault was that he enjoyed his work. If you want a somewhat feel good comedy without f-bombs, sex, or nudity this one might fill in...but don't think too hard about it.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Failing to realize its potential as an infomercial satire, "Father of Invention" (2010) takes the predictably limp comedy-drama route. Kevin Spacey and a good supporting cast receive no help from writer-director Trent Cooper's unimaginative approach. The 93-minute running time feels like an eternity.

"Haven't you ruined enough peoples lives?" Robert Axel (Spacey) is the world's greatest "fabricator". Combining two ideas into one new one makes him millions. When one idea, the "ab-clicker" (an ab machine/TV remote) breaks peoples fingers he is found liable and is sent to prison. After serving 8 years he is released and moves in with his daughter and two roommates. Kevin Spacey has started to make a living playing offbeat, somewhat eccentric characters that have to build themselves back up. While this performance is not quite as good as "Casino Jack" it is still very good, and the movie is too. A very funny and enjoyable movie to watch. While not very original it is still very entertaining and Spacey's interaction with the other characters is what makes the movie. The supporting cast which includes Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and Craig Robinson are great and while the movie is a rehash of many other movies the acting and dialog make this well worth watching. Overall, a very entertaining movie that is only that way because of the cast. I give it a B.

Would I watch again? I don't know if I would.

Risky Business (2008)

Risky BusinessI think most people who buy/rent this DVD have already seen the movie and know what they're getting. There are a lot of good reviews on this movie here at amazon.com but I only saw one that mentioned the quality of the DVD. It is absolutely horrible. The companies who produce these dark, grainy DVDs need to know that the consumers aren't going to accept this type of low-quality transfer. I'd gladly pay a bit more money for a DVD that's viewable. We know how good movies can look on DVD. So why release a disc that looks as poor as this one? As consumers we need to demand better! Just as VHS movies recorded in SLP or EP were unacceptable, so are DVDs that look as bad as this Risky Business disc.

"Risky Business" is without a doubt one of the classics from the 80's which I've continued to enjoy many times. This is simply a great movie with convincing acting, superb music, good script and believable characters. While the plot isn't anything too original, the above mentioned qualities make this movie fun to watch. Tom Cruise, having the house to himself while his parents are away, carries out the fantasy of just about every adolescent male by basically turning his home into a party haven with the inevitable consequences that follow. Rebecca De Mornay (it should be illegal to look that good in a pair of tight jeans!) plays a prostitute that becomes Cruise's "partner" in the scheme of things and Joe Pantoliano plays her sleazy pimp and does a great job in his role.

One thing that stands out about "Risky Business" is that while technically a comedy, the tone is often dark in terms of sequence of events and the eerie (yet great) instrumental music that pretty much makes up the soundtrack. While others might not really like this, I think it makes the movie stand out and avoid the over-the-top silliness that have caused many 80's comedies to become dated by today's standards. Don't get me wrong, I love those 80's movies, but "Risky Business" has a certain quality to it that takes on a more serious tone while also maintaining the fun element.

And finally, I have to say that the DVD transfer is absolutely horrific. Extras are virtually non-existent and image/sound quality is abysmal. 2003 has come and almost gone, so by now it's pointless to hope for a 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD. So if you intend to buy this get it on VHS. I can't see why anyone would want the DVD other than for longevity's sake.

FYI disc comes with a digital copy, but the confirmation/serial code expired in Sept. of 2009.

Otherwise, the movie looks great on BD; clearly much money was saved on the production budget by not buying any bras for Rebecca DeMornay.

Rarely will you find a video store without RISKY BUSINESS. Not only is it a contemporary classic, but it was also Tom Cruise's breakthrough film and a major hit. While reputed to be a very good movie, upon watching it, I found it to be something else. It's an excellent movie.

Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high-school kid who is just that a good son. He's responsible, careful, and trusted. But when his parents leave town for the week, Joel decides to loosen up but after he nervously invites call girl Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) into his house, everyone goes horridly wrong. With only a few days left to go, Joel must raise his grades, make $8,000, get back stolen furniture, and escape from the clutches of Guino (Joe Pontoliano), the killer pimp. Work is hell. And Joel knows it.

This movie is great. It wildly exceeded by expectations, and is much better than it's said to be. Cruise is great the fact that RISKY BUSINESS is Cruise's first major film is enough to make it worth the watch, anyway; De Mornay is also very good. Paul Brickman's direction has a sort of artistic feeling to it (he also scripted); he has a unique way of creating a film that's funny, erotic, and occasionally suspenseful.

Another wonderful aspect of the film is its terrific soundtrack. It features rockin' songs from such popular artists as The Police, Bob Seger, Talking Heads, Muddy Waters, Phil Collins, and Prince. It also features new music by the hit-making band Tangerine Dream, whose techno, futuristic-sounding score gives the movie an occasionally nightmarish, occasionally unpleasant mood to it and, of course, the film is about every teenager's nightmares come true.

All in all, RISKY BUSINESS is essential viewing from the 1980's, and it works just as well now as it did then. Tom Cruise's first hit, a terrific soundtrack, and a cult classic this is RISKY BUSINESS.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)This 1983 film that launched the career of Tom Cruise proves its relative timelessness by entertaining audiences even today. Mediocre student and always-obedient son Joel (Cruise) is left alone in his upscale suburban house when his parents take a vacation. It's Joel's senior year in high school and it appears that the only highlight is going to be a boring project for the Young Enterpriser Club contest. When his friend Miles (Curtis Armstong) forces his hand to take a chance, Joel is thrown into an out-of-control scenario involving the charming prostitute Lana (Rebecca de Mornay), her enterprising friends, an irate pimp named Guido (Joe Pantoliano), and a high school full of unfilled but hormonally charged teenage boys. Throw in Joel's father's Porsche, an application to Princeton, and the all-important midterms that Joel is in danger of failing and you've got a fast-paced, hilarious flick of adolescence out of control.

Unlike today's teen movies, "Risky Business" is not preoccupied with sophomoric humor and gratuitous foul language. It's too smart a screenplay for that. Instead, it focuses on the humor of a good boy gone temporarily bad, and how one small act of rebellion changes everything. At times, the film tries to be artsy with its gimmicky camera shots, direction, and editing, thus dating the film more than the costumes and screenplay do, but overall it succeeds. The music is great, particularly for those who remember the times.

Dust off your memories and revisit this fun flick. If you've never seen it, you should, if for no other reason than for seeing why Tom Cruise and Rebecca de Mornay rocketed to fame following its release.
