The Pool Boys (2011)

The Pool BoysThere have been a million teenage sex romps made through the years, and there will be a million more. With such a vast pool (no pun intended, okay--maybe it was intended) to choose from, it becomes increasingly difficult for a film to distinguish itself from the enormous pack. "The Pool Boys" is a lightweight endeavor that may certainly appease those looking for something familiar and comfortable. I would never compare this film to "American Pie," but the DVD proudly proclaims the distinction "From the Creators of American Pie" as it wishes to cash in on that film's popularity. To my mind, "The Pool Boys" plays more like the slapstick cousin of "Risky Business" minus any element of realism. It's pure silly escapism--harmless enough if you like that sort of thing, but lacking any real cleverness or outrageousness. The movie tries for shocking craziness, but it carts out tired cliches, stock characters, and expected sight gags that feel cobbled together from a dozen different movies. The actors certainly try to sell it, it just doesn't seem particularly fresh.

Brett Davern plays a recent graduate who, thorough a twist of circumstances, comes to Los Angeles to work a summer job for his successful cousin (Matthew Lillard). Of course, Lillard might have been overstating his success story and is really just a pool cleaner. The two start working together for a roster of wacky and eccentric clients, but a new business opportunity soon presents itself in the form of a squeaky clean escort (Rachelle Lefevre). Before you can say "prostitution comedy," the trio have holed up in a Hollywood mansion and solicited the locals for a wild sex party. Of course, if you've seen any number of these movies--nothing will come as a surprise to you. It isn't nearly as racy and titillating as it seems to believe it is. Oh, here's someone getting whipped, here's someone dressed like a dog, here's Tom Arnold unconvincingly (and quite loudly) playing himself. Of every joke or visual gag, I'd say that 90% have been utilized in other films of a similar nature. The movie isn't content to be just a ribald sex romp, though, it also wants to be sweetly romantic.

Look, I'm not criticizing the genre. If you want to be rude and provocative, go for it! Don't play it safe, be really outrageous! Lillard (and his ill-fitting speedo) may be the film's saving grace. He actually strikes an interesting balance between obnoxious and likable. He should set his sights higher, though, he's getting a little old to keep capitalizing on his man/child persona (heck, he plays a significant role in the Oscar contender The Descendants). Here's the deal. "The Pool Boys" is a silly movie that has no pretensions or aspirations other than to be a silly movie. That's fine and can certainly be entertaining. I just wish more of its ideas and humor hadn't been so familiar and so expected. For most of the movie, I felt like I was watching a sitcom rerun as opposed to something new and original. KGHarris, 12/11.

Just bought the DVD on Amazon and absolutely LOVED it! definitely one of the funniest movies i've seen in a while. All I want to do now is go eat at Olive Garden! hahaha. Rochelle is breathtakingly gorgeous and Brett Davern and Matthew Lillard are quite the dynamic duo! Can't wait to see more of Brett in MTVs Awkward now!

Hilarious movie! One word: statue. And I have never held the Olive Garden to the high esteem I now do omg, too funny! Matthew Lillard and Rachelle Lefevre were great in this and I really love all the old favs like George Takei and Tom Arnold that make some of the scenes in the film so memorable. Efren Ramirez the dancing is priceless. For the guys, plenty of hot chicks scantily clad Patricia de Leon and Sheena Lee and a ton more. All-in-all a fun way to vegge out and let off some steam for an hour and a half. Definitely will see again and again!

Little Big Soldier (Bluray + DVD Combo) (2010)

Little Big Soldier"Little Big Soldier" (original title "Da bing xiao jiang") is a Chinese/Hong Kong action adventure film starring (and written by) Jackie Chan. The story is set in the last days of China's Warring States Period, just before the Qin Dynasty's first unification of the country in 221 BC. Jackie Chan plays an unnamed old "Soldier" of Liang State, who, feigning a death in the battlefield, captures a young, injured "General" (Leehom Wang) of Wei State.

All the elderly "Soldier" wants is to stay alive, go back to his homeland, and hopefully, to have a small piece of land as a reward. But things are not so easy especially when the Wei troops looking for the General are closing in on them. Also, there are tribal warriors living among the mountainous area where the Soldier and the General have to travel.

Co-produced by Jackie Chan himself, the film has a few nice trademark comic set-pieces using props, but the film's overall tone is rather serious, though not too serious as entertainment. Both leading stars did great jobs here. Jackie Chan, whose acting abilities are often underrated, gives humanity to the character, a blend of comic and tragic elements. Leehom Wang is also good as the proud "General," a young man who still has to learn a thing or two from the old "Soldier" and vice versa.

There are some lapses in his storytelling, but chemistry between the two leads will make you almost forget about it. Director Sheng Ding adds a poignant touch to the adventures by using beautiful locations and songs as the backdrop of the war-time story. With the now familiar end credit bloopers, "Little Big Soldier" is an enjoyable ride film with a bit of bitter taste thrown in.

I caught this film just last night at a local film festival and had to go online to see when the blu-ray would be available. Alas, it isn't available yet, but I will be the first in line to buy it when it is available. This was a fantastic movie overall and, in my opinion, one of Jackie Chan's best. I'd rate this up there with Drunken Master and for a recent Hong Kong film I'd say it was better than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but not quite as good as Hero. Jackie Chan's physical comedy is perhaps the best in the business and is definitely showcased here, but there are so many more layers to this film. The story line is fantastic and the cinematography is top notch. My two cents is that this is a must-see.

After watching a portion of an earlier version of this film with NO subtitles and no dubbing, I ordered this new DVD version which DOES have the English dub audio, but will probably listen to the Chinese with the English subtitles, admittedly.

Jackie may be getting older, but shows no slowing down in his directing, acting and comic relief! I highly recommend "Little Big Soldier" to everyone!

Far from playing the clown and other trade mark antic , this Jackie Chan film is acually touching , and ends on a melancholic existentialist human condition sequence not unlike Kurosawa's endings

Others will review this deeper so I'll keep mine short. Some people used to nonstop Chan action and comedy throughout and up to the end credits may be a little taken aback by this film (which is why I gave it four instead of five stars) but if you look at the ending bringing a resolution to the early charge of disgrace regarding Chan's character, the ending makes sense. The two leads work fantastic against and with one another. As I am only acquainted with Chan's previous work, I will write this is the best acting I've seen from him. There's none of Crime Story's solemness and none of the (for a better word) mugging of Chan's early comedies (though I also love that Chan as well). Add to that an excellent script, fantastic cinematography and music and this movie is a winner. Comparing this with Chan's last American movie "The Spy Next Door" is like night and day. I wish THIS movie would have gotten a wide theatrical release in the States. It surely deserves it.

Little Man (2006)

Little ManThere's nothing wrong with dumb comedies. Nothing at all, but the problem with most dumb comedies is that they're just that: Dumb. There is such a thing as being so stupid it's not funny and Little Man manages to do that quite well. The Wayans brothers have been known to do comedies with utterly ridiculous plots, gross-out and sophmoric humor, and usually not giving a rip with who they make fun of. Ever since the success with Scary Movie they've made quite a name for themselves.

Little Man takes dumb comedy to the height of stupidity. The story is implausible. A comedy isn't so good when the viewer can actually see that it's trying to get some laughs. Little Man is a comedy that tries too hard. The movie is about a two foot six inch tall man named Calvin who robs a jewelry store with is incompetant partner Percy (played by Tracy Morgan). Unfortunately he drops the diamond into the purse of Vanessa Edwards (Kerry Washington). In order to get the diamond back Calvin decides to impersonate a baby and get himself dropped off on the steps of Vanessa's home. Vanessa and her husband Darryl (Shawn Wayans) decide to take the baby in.

To be honest, the movie probably would've been much more fun to watch had it just simply been about the robbers trying to break into the house and steal the diamond back. Instead, like your typical Wayans brother's movie, it opts for the more ridiculous plot. What really surprises me is that no one in the family suspects the baby of being older than he actually is. A baby that talks fluently, swears, and doesn't even look cute just takes the humor out of this movie. The people who take the "baby" in in the first place have got to be some of the most dense people on earth not realize that the baby isn't a baby at all.

This is part of the problem with the movie. Calvin discovers that he can fool just about everybody. The movie expects us to believe that all the characters on screen are idiots. Another big problem is that Calvin goes from his cute act to being the same ruthless, ill-tempered burglar he's always been. Swearing in his normal thirty-something year old voice and flipping the bird should be more than enough of a sign to these people that this "baby" is no baby at all.

I admit that the Wayans brothers can be funny guys, but this seems like a movie better suited to have been an animated feature rather than live-action. I didn't find the movie to be funny because I couldn't shake the fact that the characters on screen were really stupid about the whole situation. It sort of took the humor out of the movie.

First off, don't watch this thing expecting it to be anywhere near as funny as Scary Movie. It's PG rated, not R, so get it through ya thick skulls that it's a family movie and is not going to have adult only humor.

Little Big Man is about a small guy who is released from prison and the first thing he does is steals a diamond with someone and some things go wrong and the diamond ends up being placed into an innocent womans hand bag. Then to get the diamond back they decide to not just mug her for it, but the little guy has a shave and pretends to be an abandoned baby left on there door step. But the little guys plans to just be in and out with the diamond go wrong and he ends up staying longer then he expected pretending to be a baby.

I kind of liked the idea of it, a midget pretending to be a baby and getting up to things that only a plot like that could deliver. There are some decent gags in the film, but there are also those that didn't work and those that could've been done much better... quite frankly i'd enjoy a nurse on Alex Borsteins knee, but they played it out like she was hideous which I thought didn't work at all. Plus, the fart/poop jokes couldve been done allot better, but there are still some decent gags in the film.

I wouldn't say it's ever going to be a classic comedy, but neither was White Chicks but you can still sit from start to finish and watch it without being bored, unless you're just expecting something huge to happen, but as I said, don't expect huge laughs like they have previously made.

My 6 year old niece watched it with me and laughed at different things to me, she loved it, and wants to watch it again, so it has replay value to some.

Overall: don't go in expecting it to be something huge, its not, its more a family comedy and the only thing I didn't like was the end of it.

I liked the movie "White Chicks" but this movie was not near as good, but it had a few good laughs. It was really hard to take this movie at all serious no matter how hard I tried. How could they not tell that he was an adult?? Little man had a tattoo, and so much more things that any normal person would realize that he isn't a baby. I know I know this is a movie but I thought that it would have been a little less stupid and more funny. They really made this movie outrageously stupid as it looked better on the previews, but I did have a feeling it would be this way.

The Guilt Trip (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2012)

The Guilt Trip(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)Aside from her near-cameo appearances in two ensemble comedies, Barbra Streisand has not starred in a movie in sixteen long years, not since 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces which she also directed. Her output as an actress has been meager since around 1980 when she started directing films, building houses and returning to the concert stage periodically, so it was with both great anticipation and some trepidation that I saw this light-hearted 2012 comedy. What a relief to find she hasn't missed a beat in her sharp comedy timing. I think she's terrific as Joyce Brewster, the energetically overbearing mother of Andy, an organic chemical engineer who long ago moved to California and has recently invented a cleaning solution he is pitching to various store chains headquartered across the country. He plans a weekend visit with Joyce in New Jersey, but upon an intriguing discovery about her past, he invites her on an eight-day cross-country road trip with him.

As directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) and written by Dan Fogelman (the underrated Crazy, Stupid, Love) who based his script on his own late mother, the film is about how their two mismatched personalities unsurprisingly clash at every stop as their relationship twists and turns with each new humiliation for Andy and each new revelation for the both of them, a few of them quite poignant. The film is at its comedic best when she and co-star Seth Rogen as Andy volley back and forth with her well-meaning thoughts and antics at odds with his spiky annoyance at anything she says or does. Rogen plays against type as the coiled-up Andy since his stoner-dude personality has been the basis of much of his previous comedy. Here he needs to show some dramatic gravity (as he did earlier this year in Take This Waltz) and again does surprisingly well when necessary. There is a confrontation scene between the two characters that I wish could have gone on a bit longer and deeper than it did, but he manages to bring a real edge to the film in ways I didn't quite expect from him.

Of course there are predictable comedy pieces that also work like a steak-eating contest in Texas where Joyce has to down a fifty-ounce piece of beef in an hour to avoid a $100 tab. There's also quite a supporting cast here, but like Streisand movies of yore, the familiar actors contribute moments that amount to nearly bit parts. Kathy Najimy and Miriam Margolyes are among Joyce's Weight Watchers friends in a quick dinner scene early in the story, while Adam Scott and Ari Graynor show up at the very end of the road trip in San Francisco. In between are appearances by Brett Cullen as a cowboy who becomes smitten with Joyce during the eating contest and Nora Dunn as an officious HSN TV hostess. But that's fine since Rogen really lets Streisand dominate the movie all the way from pushing off potential suitors at a mature singles mixer to getting into the wrong car at a mini-mart pit-stop to getting drunk in a motel bar to sharing her innocently ignorant perceptions of stereotypes. This is only her 19th film since her extraordinary debut in Funny Girl 44 years ago, reason enough to enjoy the warm, accomplished performance she gives here.

GUILT TRIP is a welcome change from most films Hollywood powerbrokers tend to finance. Like HOPE SPRINGS which was released earlier this year, this film is NOT the sidesplitting comedy one would expect to see from the theatrical trailers promoting the film. Instead it is a warm and endearing film focusing on a relationship between mother and adult son. This is one of Streisand's most subdued but convincing performances in years. She is not the larger than life persona we've seen in previous films. Rogen gives a nice performance as Andy, a character very unlike others he's created in past films. This is definitely a film I'll enjoy watching from time to time and sharing with friends.

I took my dad to see this movie. A couple years back I lost my mother, coincidentally my mother and I went to see A mirror has two faces the last movie she released where Barbra was the star. In one scene, halfway through the movie an incident happens and it changes the dynamics of this movie. Anyway, I sat there at the end when others were laughing and tears were rolling down my eyes. I can remember similar situations with my mother, I loved her but I'm also a gay male, I wasn't the only child but the distance between my eldest brother and I (I'm the baby) is 10 years. I also was the gay male so I can understand the story plot very well. Would I see it again, I have, this time alone, still cried at the end but it was a good cry. Now don't get me wrong the ending is not sad, but I loved my mother, she was my friend and as we get older they tend to become our friend, just wish I had more time with her. Excellent movie, really!

"Let me tell you something kiddo, you don't have to like me or spend time with me, but as long as I'm your mother you will treat me with respect. Now drink your water before you drop dead from dehydration." Andy Brewster (Rogen) has invented a new cleaner. He is going on a cross-country trip to try and sell it. His first stop is New York...and a visit with his mom (Streisand). When a conversation brings up old stories Andy decides to invite his mom to join him, which he regrets about 5 minutes in. I was looking forward to seeing this because the trailer reminded me of me and my own mom. I will say the movie wasn't as funny as I was hoping but it was still really funny and I do recommend this. Every mother and son should see this together, I saw a lot of similarities between me and mine throughout. Some lines I'm sure we have said over and over. The cast is perfect and Rogen and Streisand actually seem related. The end got a little sappy but overall this is a very funny movie. Overall, funny but I was also hoping for funnier. I do recommend seeing this though. I give it a B.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)

Paul Blart: Mall CopThis movie is getting a surprising amount of hate and I don't know why. There is very little in the way of violence, even less in the way of sex and even the gross-out jokes are kept way below what is usually the minimum level for comedies lately. The bad guys get around the mall with mountain bikes, skate boards and by utilizing some impressive parkour moves. Clearly this movie was meant for the PG crowd and in that it succeeds. It's a nice clean family comedy that everyone can attend and enjoy. There were lots of families in the theater when I saw this movie and they all seemed to have a pretty good time. They laughed and giggled and there was very little of the bored chatter you hear sometimes at kids/family movies.

I was thinking a little about the John Candy movie Summer Rental after I saw this. Candy played a few different roles in films before he did Summer Rental but that movie is where you see the classic John Candy affable lug character that kind of served as a template for most of his following roles. His characters were usually some variation of that, he did it well and people loved it. Kevin James has a similar likable quality and I'm hoping that maybe he picks up the Easy Going Good Guy mantle where John Candy left it.

To paraphrase Paul Blart himself, "Don't write this movie off." Like I said, there were plenty of scenes that had both kids and adults laughing together. Isn't it worth at least the price of a matinee ticket to laugh for a while with your kids?

I had my reservations going in to see this one, but it was surprisingly funny and didn't have to use much gross-out, potty humor or profanity that seems to be pervading many comedies these days in attempts to humor people. Instead, there was more slapstick style humor, and while it is the classic lovable loser meets girl scenario (except at the mall) and has its predictable moments, over all it was a pretty decent comedy.

King of Queens star Kevin James plays Paul Blart, a long time mall security guard who is a bit lonely in life because of failed relationships. When he sees a beautiful woman working in the mall, he tries to figure out a way to connect with her, but his awkwardness gets in the way of his progress. Training a new mall security guard isn't what it seems to be, as this supposed high school dropout turns out to be the brains behind a massive robbery and hostage situation. It is up to Paul Blart, the only one who takes his job too seriously, to try and save the day.

The first part of the movie was funny, but some of the gags were awkward at times (trying too hard to be funny). What James brought to the character Blart was kind of a Chris Farley/John Candy kind of persona. I thought that the later half of the film was better, even though as usual you have to throw reason out the window.

Not too bad of a film, and dare I say, it might even be one you could take a date to see.

Given the large numbers of people who referred to this silly little movie as one of the worst ever, I wonder where we draw the line between critical assessment and pure gut reaction in forming our opinions of entertainment. What separates Step Brothers, which I hated, from Mall Cop, which I enjoyed? Why did this movie work whereas Funny People, another more critically received Sandler project, disappointed me?

There is little original in the story, there are the predictable credibility issues (young attractive girl falls for shleppy overweight loser oh, what hath Seth Rogen wrought?), and there's Sandler's penchant for schlocky 80s pop music touchstones that buddy Kevin James is borrowing, but still I found myself laughing out loud during much of this movie even when I saw the gag coming from a mile away. Either my opinion isn't worth squat or the reviewers who tore this movie to shreds need to lighten up. Or maybe neither. Maybe individual taste is just too complex to figure out and the reasons we react the way we do to entertainments aren't so important after all. All I know is that I liked Mall Cop. I laughed a fair amount. I would watch it again. Does that qualify as an endorsement?

It isn't often that a movie comes out that actually makes me laugh out loud, but with Kevin James behind Paul Blart as creator and star, Mall Cop fulfills its promise to entertain.

Mall Cop isn't necessarily a movie intended for the entire family, as there is frequent use of mild profanity, but there was nothing else I could find of offense in the movie. About the first half of the movie is much like watching the Kevin James hit TV series, King of Queens, as Paul Blart is very much the same character as Doug Heffernan. At times during the first half of the movie, I found my mind wondering just a bit, or found myself not too disappointed when distracted by something my son would say or do. But about half way through the movie, when the action really kicked in and we get to see James playing the role of Paul Blart a la John McClane of Bruce Willis' Die Hard fame, I found myself engrossed.

Imagine Die Hard meets Homer Simpson, and you'll get a pretty accurate picture of what Paul Blart lives through in his dedication to defend the people of his mall against the invading force of a band of Black Friday thugs out to steal thirty million dollars worth of the credit card transactions on the busiest shopping day of the year. And just like Homer Simpson, Paul Blart manages to pull through in the end.

While I don't recommend Paul Blart Mall Cop for the entire family, it is harmless and enjoyable fare for viewers over the age of twelve or thirteen. I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in I don't know how long.

Smokey and the Bandit (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) (1977)

Smokey and the BanditWhat can I say about this super cool movie that none of the other reviewers have not already said? It is one of the funniest flicks ever, it is a celebration of cool things from the 70's (and there were not too many) like CB radios, weird/wild looking cars, tight jeans and Coors beer. The story involves a pair of Truckers (Burt Renolds and Jerry Reed)and their dog Fred, who take a bet from an obnoxious Father/Son Texas oil millionaire team that they can deliver an 18 wheeler full of beer about halfway across the USA in 24hrs. They hook-up with the original runaway bride Sally Field along the way, she does the impossible before your eyes and changes out of a wedding dress into the tightest jeans ever to grace the silver screen inside a Trans Am! The jeans are so tight she might as well be naked!! It's great! They are chased by jilted groom Junior and his Daddy Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice played by the great Jackie Gleason. The Great One plays the best southern sheriff ever as he and his son drive from one madcap scen to the next in the "evidence" as they chase the Bandit in his Trans Am from one state to the next. The cast of charcters encountered is hilarious, mobile cathouse, samurai trucker, friendly undertaker, biker gang and many keystone cops. A big 10-4 to all those who firewalled this film, a big steamy 10-200 to those who did not. Let's have a reunion Burt, Sally and Jerry could take on a new sheriff. Burts need to be in a jet black WS-6 Ram Air TA with a "screaming chicken" sticker on the hood. Pontiac should beg for it, they need an image boost. I'm outta here good buddies, look out for those "Kojacks with Kodaks"!

When originally released in 1977, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT was second only to STAR WARS as the year's internationally top grossing film. With a simple plot and film locations around Atlanta, Georgia doubling as other states, this film fast moving fun. This film stands out among the other Burt Reynolds films (Like WW AND THE DIXIE DANCE KINGS) which were traditionally filled with car chases, country music and just plain showing-off. Though this was not his first major motion picture, Jerry (Hubbard) Reed plays his part perfectly as Burt's Bandit-Blocker bootlegging partner. SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT jump-started Sally Field's career and finally broke the typecast that she could be nothing more than television's Flying Nun. Jackie Gleason is ideal as Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice, whose character, a man with old-fashioned southern values, chases Reynolds, Field, and Reed from Texas to Georgia. Jerry Reed wrote and sang most of the vocals in the sound track. If the theme song, East Bound and Down, doesn't have you toe-tapping by the end of the film, then you need to watch it a second time. This film was followed by two sequels which paled in comparison to the original. This is probably the only 1970's trucker-chase and laugh movie worth owning.

Smokey and the Bandit is a dramatic comedy based on various folk legends surrounding the questionable "real-life" exploits of bandit Bo Darville and southern sheriff Buford T. Justice. Transfer looks fine, has some cool extras, but they changed the sound of the car. I've seen this movie 3,294 times or more, and I know it inside/out. A major sell for me as a kid was the car in the movie.

Though the original sound of the car in the movie was totally dubbed to make the car sound better (and sound like s stick-shift, while the car in the movie is clearly shown to be an automatic). The Special edition version tones it down and makes it sound.. ... I dunno. Bleh. Not loud, not cool. Not the Bandits Trans Am.

I'd stick with the regular DVD if you are as about the film as I am.

I caught the tail end of this movie on cable a couple of weeks ago and it took me back almost 30 years ago when first I saw it in the theater. I was 15 and was with my whole family at the movie theater and I remember cringing at every swear word because my mom was with us. It seemed like a lot of profanity back then, but these days you'd hardly notice it.

I also remember how great of a movie it was and just had to go out and get it for my DVD collection. Well I got it yesterday and watched it last night, and even 30 years later it's still a great movie. One thing to remember is that it seems like the late 70's and early 80's were filled with movies and TV shows like this (Dukes of Hazzard ring any bells?), but Smokey and the Bandit was the first, the original, and Hal Needham deserves alot of credit for single-handedly creating a whole genre, or at least a sub-genre.

Smokey and the Bandit was a fresh movie when it came out and immensely sucessful. It came out at the height of the CB Radio craze when virtually every one was putting a CB in their cars and trucks. My Dad had one in our van and another friend of mine's Dad had one in his truck and we used to hang out in one of our driveways for hours talking away with whoever was on the CB. Of course we had to memorize the list of "10" codes, and every CB radio came with a laminated list, so you learned that 10-4 meant affirmative, 10-20 meant location, 10-10 meant taking a break, and so on.

And so the CB was a big part of Smokey and the Bandit, and so were the Jerry Reed songs like "Eastbound and Down" that made up the soundtrack. And speaking of Jerry Reed, how great was he as Cledus carrying Fred the Basset Hound around eveywhere in the truck?

Sally Field as the runaway bride picked up by the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) was a perfect role for her. And Burt Reynolds was probably the most popular movie star of the 70's. The repartee between the Bandit and Frog (Sally Fields) character was funny and perfect. "You have a really nice profile." "Yeah, I do, don't I... especially from the side." Watching Smokey and the Bandit reminds me of why Burt Reynolds was so popular during the 70's.

And then the coup of the casting was getting Jackie Gleason to play Sheriff Buford T. Justice who chases the Bandit from Terxarkana all the way back to Atlanta Georgia. Gleason is phenomenal in the role and ad-libbed a good part of his lines. Telling his inept son Junior in a perfect southern drawl, "There is no way, just no way you came from my loins. When we get home, I'm going to punch yo mama right in the mouth."

And the car, I can't mention the other actors without mentioning the other star of the show, that fantastic black Pontiac Trans Am with the 6.6 liter V-8, the T-tops and the giant golden Eagle on the hood. That car was made for the movie and sales of Pontiac Trans Ams increased 700% solely because of the movie. Everyone wanted a car like the Bandit's.

Sure parts of the movie are a little cheesy, but it has a whole lot of redeeming qualities as well. It's not a film for intellectuals, but it's a great movie for watching with friends on a Saturday night with pizza and beer. Watching it in widescreen again was wonderful too, it's really shows off the cars and the stunts a lot better.

If you're looking to build a good solid movie collection, you need some good ones from the 70's and Smokey and the Bandit is one of the best comedies of its era. I highly recommend it.
