The Women in Cages Collection (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Triple Feature) (The Big Bird Cage / Bi

The Women in Cages CollectionFor fans of '70s exploitation and women-in-prison flicks, Shout Factory's "Women in Cages" collection is a fun diversion that is well-assembled. We get three Roger Corman films from 1971-72 all shot in the Phillipines starring Pam Grier and other nubile honeys.

"The Big Doll House" features lots of torture scenes, fun performances from slimy Sid Haig (his scenes with Grier are priceless), and an almost unrecognizable Pat Woodell (the original Bobbie-Jo from the black-and-white "Petticoat Junction").

The best of the trilogy is "The Big Bird Cage" which throws more humor into the mix and the result is even more entertaining. The gay Phillipino prison guards are hysterical, as is the way the women shamelessly proclaim their sexual frustration (When they finally do get their hands on a man, he's forced at knifepoint to "Get it up, or I'll cut it off!"). The dialogue in this one just gets better with lines like ""You can't rape me, I love sex" and "Never mind the crotch cooties...they have to eat too!". And when an inmate slathers chicken fat all over her naked body so she can literally slip past the guards, "The Big Bird Cage" soars into camp movie heaven!

"Women In Cages" has Pam Grier in Sybil Danning-mode as the evil prison matron, rather than an inmate, and the results are not as good. The film seems to suffer from a smaller budget too, and despite encore performances from Roberta Collins and Judy Brown, isn't as fun as the first two flicks. I'd recommend watching "Women in Cages" first and saving the earlier but superior flicks til last.

There's a lengthy documentary about all three films featuring interviews with many of the actors and actresses that is worthwhile viewing as well as original trailers and TV spots. The picture quality is very good. They've done as best as possible with the original elements, but there are a few blotches on the prints here and there.

If you love bad movies from the early '70s with lots of poisonous snakes, catfights, mud wrestling and pre-silicone boobies, this collection is for you!

This 2-disc bargain offers two great Jack Hill classics--1971's THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, 1972's THE BIG BIRD CAGE and both feature commentary tracks by Hill (recorded about a decade ago) and a third film, WOMEN IN CAGES, that was shot in-between those two films (but by Gerry DeLeon, not Hill). BIRD CAGE and WIC share a disc while DOLL HOUSE is on another DVD with a wonderful new documentary, FROM MANILA WITH LOVE that features brand new interviews with writer/director Jack Hill, screenwriter James Gordon White, producers Roger Corman and Jane Schaffer and actors from both films including Sid Haig, Judy Brown, Anitra Ford, Roberta Collins, Candice Roman and Teda Bracci. Sadly, Pam Grier does not take part in the documentary. There is also one other special feature: a solo interview with Judy Brown (this set does not contain Leonard Maltin's interviews with Roger Corman).

All three films are presented in anamorphic widescreen. A note in an insert says that "Two separate film elements were used to put together a complete version of THE BIG BIRD CAGE--a CRI and the original negative, which had been cut at some point." Both DOLL HOUSE and BIRD CAGE look and sound sensational.

On the other hand, WOMEN IN CAGES (which reunited three of DOLL HOUSE's cast members--Grier, Judy Brown and Roberta Collins, but appears to have been shot with an even smaller budget and without any of the style Jack Hill brought to his two films) has muddy sound. The same booklet warns, "We used the only available source material for the audio on WOMEN IN CAGES, which was not in pristine condition. Much of the audio for these films shot in the Philippines was done later in post production, as you'll find that not all lip movements match the dialogue." WOMEN is the least fun of the trio. It does boast an over-the-top, nasty-as-hell villain performance by Pam Grier (in just her second role), but while the two Hill productions are beautiful to look at and take full advantage of shooting in the tropical paradise, WOMEN keeps its shots claustrophobic and close. The few outdoor shots are usually shot at night or nearing dawn (with smoke effects to further mask the cheap budget). One whole action sequence on the beach near the end is shot in silhouette, which makes it impossible to even see which of the women is being chased and shot at. There's such a lack of location footage that you'd almost think it was shot on a NY backlot! WOMEN plays almost like a horror film with Pam's torture chamber almost like out of a German S/M porn film.

But the reason to buy this set is the beautiful prints of BIG DOLL HOUSE and BIG BIRD CAGE and Jack Hill's informative commentaries (did you know that DOLL HOUSE's delicious villain, Barbara Loder, became ill and lapsed into a coma while making the film? She was finally diagnosed as being diabetic and was treated and came out of her coma to finish the film. She looks scary-thin in the film, but she's a wonderful villain--just as she would be a couple years later in FOXY BROWN). Both films are action-packed and have a sense of humor about themselves (especially BIRD CAGE, which is really a parody of DOLL HOUSE). These are not "so bad that they're good" movies...these are actually well-made, action-packed adventures with strong female characters. And they all show just how quickly Pam Grier was able to turn herself into a star with vibrant screen presence. Enjoy!

All I can say is "this is exploitation heaven!". To me these Roger Corman drive-in classics are what prison flicks are all about! Shout has done one terrific job on this two disc triple feature. The three films are finally anamorphic widescreen and look great (especially Big Doll House) and this is a fantastic package! Always have enjoyed low budget drive in classics from the 70s, but these are the icing on the cake!! Women in Prison flicks from early 70s have always been my guilty pleasure.

The special features are numerous (love the from Manila with love doc.) for Big Doll House. Big Bird Cage has audio commentary from Jack Hill, trailers. Women in Cages only has trailer. But all in all, this is worth picking up if you enjoy these Pam Grier classics. Can't wait for the blu rays!

Shout Factory continues to release the works from Director Roger Corman's New World Pictures where young directors were able to refine and mature their talents working in low budget conditions but receiving expert training to go on to the major studios. Because of hearing about the success of Director Jesus Franco's '99 WOMEN'-1969, writer/director Jack Hill pitched an idea to Roger Corman to do a woman in prison film of their own. Corman arranged to have the film made in the Phillipines where at that time they could get away with much more than by shooting it in the states. The rest was legend: 'THE BIG DOLL HOUSE' -1971 went on to incredible business making a star our of newcomer Pam Grier and elevated Jack Hill to cult action director status. The film , however ,was not the first to show tough women on the screen. Countless teenage fifties girl gang films leading up to Director Russ Meyer's classic 'FASTER, PUSSYCAT, KILL KILL'1965 is proof of that. 'DOLL HOUSE' was the first to show a gang of women struggling to survive within the prison system. Nine times out of ten, the main actress was incarcerated by accident or deliberately and spends the films running time revealing her innocence and taking the other girls with her. It was responsible for countless imitations from Director Don Edmond's 'ILSASHE WOLF OF THE SS'-1974 and it sequels plus may have influenced the Nazi Exploitation films which came from Italy in the late seventies. It also showed the underrated acting ability of Sid Haig who would be resurrected in the Rob Zombie duet 'HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES'-2003 and 'THE DEVIL'S REJECTS'-2005 and Roberta Collins who's matter of fact acting styles elevated the films to classic status . This collection contains the first three films which came out of the box office explosion of 'DOLL HOUSE'S' success. Each film has been released before in box sets and individually. I have not yet seen this release but I do have the box set that New World released in 2004 'PAM GRIER: UNLEASHED' which contains these three films along with her 1973 Roman epic guilty pleasure, Director Steve Carver's 'ARENA'-1973. The transfers are full screen and beautiful so Shout Factory may have the same transfers or may have improved on them. Hopefully, they also will retain the excellent audio commentary tracks by Director Jack Hill on both 'DOLL HOUSE' and its sequel 'THE BIG BIRD CAGE'-1972. The commentaries really give you an excellent behind the scenes look at location filmmaking and working and surviving in primitive conditions. 'WOMEN IN CAGES'-1971 was released immediately after the success of 'DOLL HOUSE' where actresses from the film decided to stay on in the Phillipines and you'll notice that Pam Grier goes from heroine to villain as the prison commandant. It is directed by Gerry De Leon who made some great cult classics such as 'TERROR IS A MAN'-1959 and was behind the scenes on the infamous 'BLOOD ISLAND' trilogy all made in the Phillipines. 'THE BIG BIRD CAGE' was made to continue the success of the first one and utilizes model Anitra Ford in the lead along with Pam. It contains more over the top sequences such as the simulated sex and rape scene of the gay prison guard which was incredibly daring for its time and just shows what liberties the filmmakers took with the genre. Director Hill directs so excellently that both films could easily be seen as a 3 hour epic. Where 'WOMEN IN CAGES' lacks humor and has more grisly moments in the torture department, its Jack Hill's stamp of humor and innovative direction that made his films groundbreaking in portraying women in tough situations and paved the way for female vigilante and super buffed babe films to come including 'SWITCHBLADE SISTERS'-1975. There was also a women in prison revival in the early eighties utilizing actresses Linda Blair and Sybil Danning but they never reached the exploitive heights of these three classics. Those films will have a future release. Knowing Shout Factory's past releases, this box set comes highly recommended if you have not yet seen these wonderful time capsules of low budget filmmaking. Watch Pam in her prime before she made 'COFFY'1973,'FOXY BROWN'-1974 both by Jack Hill and Director Quentin Tarrantino's 'JACKIE BROWN'-1997 and makes you see what all the fuss was about. Pambo Rules!!!

The machete maidens are indeed unleashed in this triple feature of philippine bamboo cage women in prison flicks, all staring a very young and captive-vating Pam Grier, 2 of the films also star Sid Haig who seems to pop up in every 70's movie I watch lately, but you may know as the menacing clown from House of 1000 Corpses and the Devil's Rejects. These are really more women empowerment movies then anything else, sure there are shower scenes and abusive prison guards, but these broads are tough and don't take no guff, there are lots of cat fights, mostly in the mud, and the films despite being low budget keep your interest and are well written and directed, not that this is exactly cinema verité, but if you like WIP, Grindhouse, Drive-in, Exploitation and or Pam Grier this is a must have.

Lucas (1986)

LucasThis 1980's movie helped to make Charlie sheen a big star. Unlike today where we don't have many actors who become big early on , back then it happened more often. You just knew Sheen was going to the top. And Cory Haim was bound for a great career too it seemed , this movie which did quite well made them even more popular. This movie about a young 14 year old who will do anything to impress a older girl was right on the mark. This blu ray which looks pretty good is worth owning and very family friendly. It's a good story of teen angst and it has both touching and comedic moments. Even today a kid could emphasize and relate to the basic story here. The characters are played as real people and not stereotypes. It's worth owning on blu ray if you love these type of movies. Watching this close to 30 years later it's easy to see how much charisma these actors had and sadly both of them would let drugs destroy their careers (sheen could have stayed a giant movie star but by the mid 90's that prospect was gone) and they even completely destroyed Haim's health. He died a few years back , broke and barely functioning. Thankfully this movie isn't about drugs. Because even back then , a drug movie was about teens out of it, and this is a story with a better message. And it has a good blu ray release finally.

Red 2

Red 2Here they are again, our favorite former black-ops CIA agents, still Retired and Extremely Dangerous, who must reunite and track down a portable nuclear device, invented by a man who has been held for over 30 years in an institution for the criminally insane.

If you saw the original "Red" you know that after all the wild events, Frank and Sarah became a couple. Now we get to see what happens AFTER the "happily ever after...." (It's hilarious!)

We see:

* Bruce Willis ("Red") Frank is in a domestic frenzy, deliriously heaping his shopping cart at Costco with countless household items.

* John Malkovich ("Red") Marvin is horrified to see Frank in this condition. He will do anything...

* Mary-Louise Parker ("Red") Sarah has an edge over Frank and Marvin: people LIKE her, but she can only watch Frank's new-found domesticity with a mixture of dismay and affection.

* Helen Mirren ("Red") Victoria is in the middle of another "side job" when our friends contact her.

* Byung-hun Lee ("G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra") Han Cho Bai has a contract to kill Frank.

* Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Side Effects") Katja is a Russian operative who formerly worked for the KGB. She and Frank have a "history."

* Anthony Hopkins ("You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger") Bailey is our mad scientist.

This PG-13 outing is another wild ride with our favorite foursome, maybe even wilder than the original: Our screening audience laughed all the way through. Expect vehicular mayhem, endless gunfire and blowie uppie stuff, hardly any profanity, several interesting kisses but no sweaty bodies. Mirren makes a great Mary, Queen of Scots, Parker speaks lousy Russian, Malkovich is fetching in a Carmen Miranda chicka-chicka boom hat and Willis plays Willis flawlessly.

Don't miss this one! I'll pre-order my DVD from Amazon as soon as it's allowed.

Saw the movie recently and I intend to order the DVD.

This film is funny, witty, has action galore and tons of star power in an assemble cast.

The relationship between Frank and Sarah was handled beautifully, Marvin is still bat-crap crazy, but lovable and Victoria chews up the scenery with the best of them. Throw in a kick ass assassin, mad scientist and worldwide exotic locations and you have the perfect formula for non-stop entertainment.

Highly recommended. If you liked Red, you'll love Red 2. Nuff said, I'm ordering my copy now.

"Red 2" is a superb action film that touches on the continuation of most of the characters from the first Red film. My husband and I both agreed that "Red 2" was even better than the first "Red." However, he was undecided at first about who was his favorite character. This was because Bruce Willis and Louise Parker elegantly played a couple very much in love and playing out their relationship among various heists. Lee Byung-hun gave a marvelous performance as a gifted assassin who deep down has a good sense of right and wrong. However, my husband admitted that he enjoyed Anthony Hopkins in the role as Dr. Edward Bailey the most. This was because Hopkins gave an admirable performance as a physicist who is called upon for his talents. My favorite performances were a tie between Helen Mirren as Victoria Winters and John Malkovich as Marvin Boggs. Mirren gives a splendid performance as a trained and true femme fatale who still has a heart for her fellow friends while accomplishing her duties in an efficient manner (there is a comical scene where she is portraying the queen of England). My husband also liked Mirren's performance, but more for her flirty demeanor and her elegant style while doing one of her jobs (there is a scene where she is aiming her gun in a stylish outfit and letting her boyfriend touch her feet). I enjoyed Malkovich's commendable performance as Boggs because he plays a man with the right touch of paranoia who also is a skilled mediator for his fellow colleagues/friends. There are also electrifying scenes in the movie where the characters are shown traveling to England, France, and Russia. "Red 2" is a terrific film for those who enjoyed the first "Red" movie and/or like action films. The following actors/actresses also play important parts in "Red 2": Catherine Zeta Jones as Katya, Brian Cox as Ivan Simanov, David Thewlis as The Frog, and Neal McDonough as Jack Horton.

"Red 2" is an even bigger and better comedy action thriller than 2010's "Red", featuring everyone's favorite "retired-extremely dangerous" spies. A superb cast has a blast with the plot and the dialogue as the action runs from Kansas to Washington DC to Paris to London to Moscow.

Retired spy Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is attempting to live a quiet life with girlfriend Sarah (Mary Louise Parker) in Kansas. Old and very paranoid friend Marvin (John Malkovich) warns them of the resurrection of a mysterious Cold War plot known as Operation NIGHTSHADE. Marvin disappears in a car explosion and Frank is taken in for interrogation by the CIA's nasty Jack Horton (Neal McDonough). Frank will of course escape and go on the run with Sarah and the resilient Marvin.

It will turn out that the answers to NIGHTSHADE are inside the head of Dr. Edward Bailey (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant but deranged scientist held incommunicado by Britain's MI-6 for the last thirty years. Frank, already wanted by the CIA, MI-6, and the KGB, will also have to contend with a paid assassin named Han (Byung-Hun Lee). He will get help from a former MI-6 operative (Helen Mirren), a former Russian spymaster (Brian Cox), and a former KGB agent and ex-lover (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Together, they will have to find a reclusive information peddler known as the Frog, sneak into a high security detention area, and break into, and out of, the Kremlin. The action and suspense are virtually non-stop, and if the plot doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense, it's all tongue-in-cheek good fun, well done by a group of talented actors with impeccable comedic timing. Recommended as an afternoon's good entertainment.

The film incorporates Wikileaks as the new problem child for Moses Frank (Bruce Willis) and company. An article claims he and Marvin (John Malkovich) were involved in a 1979 operation called "Night Shade." They have become wanted men.

In an expanded role Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) our meek lady from Kansas has become a thrill seeker and joins the group as they travel the world to find "Night Shade." In addition to Interpol and the Feds looking for our heroes, there is also a hitman (Byung-hun Lee) after them and Victoria (Helen Mirren) is also contracted to kill them...Malkovich proclaims "Friends don't take out a contract on friends." They are allied by KGB agent Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to the displeasure of sweet innocent Sarah who says..."Can't we just kill her?"

The film is filled with Malkovich one liners which we enjoyed in the first movie. The expanded role of Sarah added to the feature. This is perhaps a notch below the first installment, but a worthy action-comedy sequel that will be in my collection when it comes out.

Parental Guide: No sex or nudity. One half spoken f-bomb.

Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns + Digital Copy (2008)

Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns + Digital CopyShort Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. Angela Bassett stars as a single mother of 3 kids struggling to make ends meet in inner city Chicago

2. A death in the family takes them to Georgia, where they meet the Browns

3. A quick Rick Fox jumps into the crazy clan

4. Over-the-top characters, prolonged punch lines and unnecessary family secrets lead to a predictable ending

This movie has an established talent pool of a cast, and usually they can be depended on to put the "dis" in dysfunctional, but this time the jokes fail to flow smoothly, wasting the comedic talents of Jenifer Lewis, David Mann and Frankie Faison. Tyler Perry appears briefly as his most beloved character Madea, but even this feels like an afterthought in the context of the movie.

Angela Bassett is out of place for this particular role, but excellent actress that she is, her character signifies hope for single mothers everywhere who may be feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of work, home and family.

Some good performances make for a movie with a strong message, but unfortunately it's hard to see through all the noise and confusion.

Amanda Richards, July 20, 2008

I cannot stop playing this DVD. I watched it for the first time on Christmas night and have been thinking about the Browns ever since. I went in expecting to obviously miss the presence of Madea, but I have to say that although I'm interested to know what kind of interaction she would have had with the Browns, Mr. Perry made the correct decision when he decided to give the Manns their time to rightfully shine. It's a wonderful, highly enjoyable play.

Going totally and completely out on a limb, I'm going to say that I think this is probably the best Tyler Perry play I've seen (I've seen 5 of 7, soon to be 8 with the addition of Madea Goes To Jail). To be clear, I'm not talking in terms of outright humor, because I didn't find it to be as funny as the others, but more in terms of better writing, better actors, and better subplots. It also included better singing/songs; this time I didn't fast-forward through any of the singing, which is rare for me, because I don't like musicals and random singing. (Yes, this means I hate Chicago and Mary Poppins.) My favorites would absolutely have to be Tamala Mann and Terrell Carter's solo performances and the final song in which the entire cast sang. Those are the ones I insert the DVD to play whenever I'm home, and those are the ones I find myself walking around at work singing to myself; they actually inspired me to purchase the soundtrack from tylerperry.com. I have to recommend this play to everyone I know (starting with whoever is reading this and hasn't seen it).

I think Tyler Perry should give himself more time in between movies so that he can make a great movie every single time. I liked Diary, loved Family Reunion and Why Did I Get Married. I didn't care for Daddy's Little Girls nor this movie. It wasn't horrible...I just know he can do so much better.

*** The movie seemed too rushed/hasty and there were some parts that just did not go together. I am still confused how Brenda was able to bring all of her children on limited tickets with her down South. Did I miss it? At the theatre, I had to fill in the blanks myself.

*** I wanted to see more of the Browns. I thought this movie was going to actually be like Meet the Browns the play (which I LOVE) but where were Will and Kim? Sara and LB and Millie? I mean, I know they (I love Avery, lol) and LB were in it but their roles could have been bigger. This was just like What's Done in the Dark...even down to the "Brenda, I make 25/hr," and "I told you to get an abortion,"...Needless to say, I was disappointed.

*** For a struggling mother, Angela's hair was always on point! I love Angela Bassett though. She is an excellent actress who plays this role well but could have been better with more support. Angela speaking slang, however, was a little difficult for me because I don't speak slang and I am a black woman. Plus, Angela speaking slang is just weird. Did she have to? So, is it not possible/believable?? (these are actual questions)

*** I did not like Rick Fox in this role. I don't know why. Maybe the theatre I was in messed up the audio levels but he seemed to talk too soft and low and his grin annoyed me, lol.

*** Sofia Vergara was too extra. I also know she can be better. Plus, I think Mr. Perry should have done more research on bipolar disorder to hit her character just right. I have first hand experience with the disorder and if you go off your meds, holding down a job and retaining friends is next to impossible. Perhaps she is type 2??

*** I didn't like the pimp/ho joke. It was just uncalled for. It was distasteful.

The movie wasn't horrible...I just KNOW it can be better. He just needs to give himself more time to work on them. He is doing too much at once and is gonna run himself ragged!! I love Tyler Perry and his work, however, I am not going to blindly think all of his work is excellent. It's called constructive criticism. :-)

This is just the same story Tyler Perry does over and over with just a different set of characters. He has another black woman who is horribly mistreated by a man only to be saved by a big muscular hunk. I'm often very unhappy with the sterotypical ways Mr. Perry portrays blacks. The ignorant banter of Mr. Brown sets us back by about 50 years. This time he threw in a loud, obnoxious Latino to add to the sterotyping. I do think I could get over that though if he would come up with a different storyline. I truly don't understand what the love for these movies is all about. They alway deal with poor mistreated woman, a very mean man, a very nice handsome man, a loud obnoxious relative or 2, and a beautiful wedding.

Leap Year (2010)

Leap YearI love romantic comedies and got really excited when I recently saw the preview for Leap Year. I love Amy Adams and remembered Matthew Goode from a few other movies(Chasing Liberty, Watchmen, Match Point). Lately, there have been a lot of romcoms that don't do it for me, they're just lacking the heart, that certain something. Thankfully, Leap Year had heart, laughs and was just all around a well done movie. 24 hours after seeing it, my boyfriend and I were still talking about how much we liked it.

The premise is that Anna(Amy Adams) has been dating her doctor boyfriend for 4 years, they're buying an apartment together in Boston, and she wants to get engaged, but he hasn't asked. So she plans to surprise him in Dublin while he's away on business on the one day in Irish tradition that says the woman can propose to the man, Feb 29th of a leap year. Of course, her trip doesn't go as planned, and she ends up needing help getting to Dublin from Declan(Matthew Goode).

While predictable as far as romantic comedies go, it was fast paced, funny and romantic. We both really liked Matthew Goode's character and his sense of humor. He was excellent as a multi-faceted leading man. I love Amy Adams because she seems like a regular girl(funny, sweet, not a twig)and she was perfect for the role of Anna. The scenery of Ireland was gorgeous, and makes you want to take a trip there. Definitely a great date movie, worth paying to see.

Unfortunately, no good special features on the DVD, only some deleted scenes. I'm a sucker for "making of" featurettes and thought they might at least have done a little something about filming in Ireland. You'll only find a bare bones DVD here.

This is one of the cleanest funny movies I've seen in a long time. Even with its predictable ending, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Tell me....why can't Hollywood make more of these movies instead of the garbage they usually make. Can't wait till it's released on DVD.

LEAP YEAR

STARRING: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, Adam Scott, John Lithgow and Noel O'Donovan

WRITTEN BY: Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont

DIRECTED BY: Anand Tucker

Rated: PG

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Release Date: 08 January 2010

Review Date: 26 May 2010

When Leap Year slid past me in the theaters from doing so horribly at the box office and being plagued by rumors that it was horrible; I wasn't all that let down that I missed it on the big screen. Having recently seen it on video, I was shocked at how amazing it was and wished I had gotten the opportunity to catch it in theaters.

The sensational Amy Adams stars as Ann; a woman so many women can relate to: she's dating a guy who may never commit. Her boyfriend of quite some time, Jeremy (Adam Scott) is far too consumed with bettering his career to even stop and consider marriage let alone actually pop the question.

When Jeremy rushes off to Ireland for a career opportunity, Ana is left alone wishing there was something she could do. Upon hearing about an Irish tradition, she realizes there is something she can do. She can fly to Ireland and propose to Jeremy herself, as each leap year allots for this to be customary there.

If you are at all like me, you are already skeptical by the premise and if you've seen the trailer, it only adds to such skepticism. However, film works magic with its weak supposition and the trailer fails to provide it with any solitude.

Ana had no idea just how difficult it would be to track Jeremy down. Between being caught in nasty storms, missing trains and being barricaded by a heard of wild animals, it seems she may never reach her love. All is not lost though, as she is accompanied on these miss-adventures by her unbeknownst to her true, true love, Declan, played by Matthew Goode.

The two can't stand each other for the majority of the film, but we can see their underlying chemistry behind all their bickering. Soon enough, having shared a few moments, and after they let their guard down to one another, they will see it too.

Leap Year was written by the team who crafted such hits as Made of Honor and Can't Hardly Wait. And it has some of the best cinematography of the year, displaying magnificent shots of the Irish countryside that will have you booking a flight there during the movie.

This is the kind of film that evokes thoughts of fate and as a huge advocate for fate, I find this refreshing in films. If you've ever been touched by destiny in your life, then you know exactly what I am talking about. Sometimes we kick and scream at the sight of the path we find ourselves on, only to realize later, and sometimes much, much later, that it is in fact the path we prefer.

Leap Year is charming for several reasons. One. It is primarily set in Ireland and the lush scenery makes it visually delicious.

Secondly, the classic storyline is freshly retold. A girl who is on the cusp of living her perfect-for-her fairy tale life, lacks one thing, an engagement ring. Her charming, but irresponsible father, reminds her of an Irish tradition. Every leap year, a woman is able to propose to the man she loves and then her dreams will come true. It had worked for a member of Anna's (Amy Adams) family.

When Anna's cardiologist boyfriend fails to propose (oh, he delivers diamonds, but of the earring variety) the night before he leaves for a medical conference in Dublin, Anna decides enough time has passed and she'd grab hold of her dreams and use the Leap Year legend to make it happen. After all, Jeremy is already in Ireland, so there must be a wee bit of fate involved.

Finally, there is serious heart in this movie. Declan (Matthew Goode) plays the angry, wounded bartender who agrees, after a series of travel mishaps, to haul Anna to Dublin. Anna, determined to create the secure life she never had as a child, begins to break down Declan's walls. As the two interact, they soften towards each other and begin to understand one another. There are a couple of satisfying scenes when realization dawns and both actors silently emote feelings that can't be put into words. Leap Year is an old-fashioned romantic story that didn't involve sex first, love later or require a lot of four letter words to make a point. Comfortably PG.

Of course, this is romantic comedy/chick flick territory so there are predictable and yeah right moments. But when the movie is this sweet, does it matter where Declan got clean clothes that fit, or that the intelligent, savvy, extremely methodical Anna didn't think about electricity issues in Europe? Not at all. When this movie releases on DVD I will purchase it.
