Pink Panther 2

Pink Panther 2I saw this movie before the first Steve Martin "Pink Panther" movie. This movie is definitely worth watching...as Abraham Lincoln said, "People who like this sort of thing will find this to be the sort of thing they like". At any rate, I just really like "The Pink Panther 2"...not sure how to describe it...it's just funny and fun.

This particular edition has two discs, and the second disc has 27 "Pink Panther" cartoons. The first disc has the movie in what I prefer, widescreen, and a few additional features.

By the way, for all of you fans of Alfred Molina, look for him in a vastly different role in this year's "Prince of Persia".

If you're afraid "The Pink Panther 2" is going to terribly fall short of the first Steve Martin "Pink Panther", you can stop worrying, because this movie is rare in that it actually is GOOD even though it is a movie sequel.

When you can sit by yourself and watch a movie and laugh out loud at even parts of the movie that's a good movie. I rented this one because of all the bad reviews. I had to see it Martin, Reno, Cleese, Molina, Garcia, Rai somewhere I figured something in it had to be funny. What I discovered was that lots of it was funny plus they finally got it right with the anticipation build-up, which was a great deal of the fun in the Sellers original. When Steve Martin heads for the wine, you think, 'oh no', and you are not disappointed. For me, this is definitely a keeper that I will want to watch again when I need a good laugh, so I bought it.

If you want a chill movie that is just fun to watch this is the one. Watch it with some friends or family. I've watched this movie half a dozen times and there are several parts (like the finger print discovery) that you will enjoy seeing again and again. Don't over analyze, just sit back and relax and you should enjoy some laughs.

Boeing Boeing (1965)

Boeing BoeingThose who have eagerly awaited some of Jerry Lewis' post-Dean Martin classics being released on DVD and Blu-ray for the first time will have a special Valentine courtesy of Olive Films as 1958's "The Geisha Boy," 1958's "Rock-a-Bye Baby" and 1965's "Boeing Boeing" get a 2/14/12 release. It's hard to imagine that these films have not been made available on DVD prior to now! Of course, Lewis still remains a love it or loathe it proposition for many modern era film goers--but there is no denying his legacy and impact on the contemporary comedy scene. Oftentimes content to play the fool, Lewis displayed an innocent appeal on-screen that engaged a sense of silliness in us all. But he had genuine heart too, and his good-natured screen persona created some indelibly beloved characters that stand in contrast to his more complicated personal life. These films are an interesting cross section of Lewis' film catalogue as we see him doing what he does best but bringing additional elements of seriousness to the table. Made of a certain time and place, these films offer great nostalgia value for those that love Lewis--but also an opportunity for new viewers to discover Lewis in his prime.

"Boeing Boeing" is a real product of its time (despite its 2008 all-star Broadway revival). Originally penned as a French farce by Marc Camoletti, this play was first adapted for an English language audience in 1962. It must have seemed like a great idea to bring this broad comedy to the big screen, and its frantic energy is infectious and also a bit tiring. Tony Curtis is the actual lead who is juggling three live-in fiances. Seem impossible? Not when all three are stewardesses for rival international airlines whose schedules never intersect. But that's all about to change as advances in aviation have created faster jets which upsets Curtis' precise scheduling. In one harried evening, all three ladies will overlap with Curtis, his put-upon housekeeper (always great to see Thelma Ritter), and Jerry Lewis as Curtis' friend/nemesis who wants in on the action. It's non-stop mayhem with near misses and constant scheming. It's all so chaste and silly and perfectly exemplifies the swinging sixties mentality with an undercurrent of sexism as the women are little more than a prize for Curtis' womanizing philanderer.

But given all that, it can still be a bit of wacky fun. Curtis has rarely had such a physically demanding role--he's always on the go. In a change of pace, Lewis is actually more of the straight guy in the comic piece. Funny and adult, without his usual cartoonish mannerisms, this actually netted Lewis his only Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy. The actresses all imbue their cultural stereotypes with enthusiasm (one is British, one French, one German) and Ritter can do no wrong. I think it's fascinating that Lewis turns in one of his most understated roles in this completely over-the-top scenario! But it is Curtis, and his constant scrambling, that I always remember. It's fun and funny, as long as you can just accept the premise at face value. I always describe this one to people as an extended version of Three's Company with Curtis perfecting the role of Jack Tripper. Not deep, but energetic and amusing, it's a comedy that succeeds because everyone is fully committed to the silliness. KGHarris, 12/11.

When the opening credits run, and the supporting female cast members `measurements' are shown beneath their names, you have no doubt you're in the 60's, bedroom farce, defined. In a roll reversal of sorts Jerry Lewis plays straight man to Tony Curtis this time around.

Bernie Lawrence (Curtis) is an American newspaper man stationed in Paris, the man for whom there is never too many airline hostesses, just too little time. His delicately balanced, and timed to the minute, 4-way love life comes totally unwound when old pal Robert Reed (Lewis) arrives for an unexpected stay.

Cliché after cliché, time stamped in most every shot, Boeing Boeing is a tribute to a different type of filmmaking than we see today, a different morality, a different approach to comedy.

Wonderful Paris sights are an added treat. Recommended.

I consider this movie one of the Greatest Comedy in Cinema History! TCurtis, JLewis and the less known but great actress Thelma Ritter simply put a Roller-Coaster movie that keeps you glued and amused from start till the end. Not many other comedies can do the same. And Jerry Lewis part is not diminished at all by the others ones. (I'm a real Jerry Lewis fan, but I don't think that Tony Curtis and Thelma Ritter are nobody in Cinema History, simply look back.....) All 3 are Simply Great, the Movie is Simply unmissible and any Superlative Word available in the Vocabulary can freely be used!

Silver Streak (1976)

Silver StreakThis movie is one I can watch over and over again. While Gene Wilder's cluelessness may seem to wear a little thin in places, the chemistry between the characters works. Admittedly when Richard Pryor appears the movie goes from humorous to hilarious, but in the meantime the Hitchcockian flavor will keep most viewers entertained.

Gene Wilder is a book editor travelling by train from Los Angeles to Chicago. Jill Clayburgh is a professor's assistant. During a romantic interval in Jill's compartment Gene see's a man killed. Of course the man is the professor. Let the fun begin.

Gene Wilder is a perfect straight man for this movie. He is clearly intelligent, but unused to crime and guns. His bravado is likely that of a typical suburbanite, and while we laugh at his actions, we also identify with his character.

Other stars make this movie an absolute joy to watch over and over. Richard Kiel of James Bond "Jaws" fame makes another silent appearance. Ray Walston is a sleazy hood. Clifton James, another James Bond movie character, also makes an appearance about the same time as Richard Pryor. Ned Beatty plays a government agent and Scatman Crothers plays a conductor. An all-star cast of characters actors in somewhat stereotypical roles, but they are so instantly recognizable that their appearance is enjoyable.

The train is a center piece of the movie, and the most important action scenes take place on or around the train. Train buffs who also enjoy comedies will find this movie to be fascinating. The end of the movie is particularly spectacular and intense as we wonder whether Jill, Richard, Gene and Scatman are going to survive to the end.

This movie was nearly an instant classic when it was released. Light comedy and very good entertainment, this movie is worth having on DVD.

More than a quarter of a century has passed between the release of this movie and my review. It looks current, exciting, and brand new. I highly recommend it. The pace is great, the suspense is ubiquitous, but not overblown (as it tends to be in so many contemporary movies), and the comedy is fantastic. I believe this is one of the best comedies of the last thirty years.

Gene Wilder displays more energy in this one than Richard Pryor. He is still quite young here and runs all over the place, being thrown off the train and all. But when Pryor shows up, the overall tempo of the movie picks up somehow, and we move from the middle to the conclusion so quickly that one can hardly stop to catch his breath.

The train wreck conclusion was nicely done. Somebody mentioned that this was the forerunner of Speed, and I think that is right one the mark. Nice comedy/suspense that made me feel a litte better after I watched it. I have not taken a train since I don't know when. In Southern California, the car is king. This movie made me almost nostalgic about the place I grew up--in a universe far away--where people used trains all the time, and I was among them.

Of all of the collaborations between Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, this one is my favorite. The characters are well drawn, the plot is balanced nicely between the elements of romance, adventure and mystery, plus the dialogue sparkles wittily.

The story is about a man who decides to combine a business trip with a little bit of relaxation, by taking the train from Los Angeles to Chicago. Along the way, he is involved with a beautiful woman, murder, a loveable thief and slate of "bad guys" well worthy of black hats.

The film is a charming diversion from the world; one that can be enjoyed by most of the family. It is a must have, either as a family film (for kids over 13) or a "date" movie. If you like to laugh, then add Silver Streak to your collection.

I've waited for this title on DVD ever since the format arrived. Even though the disc is essentially bare-bones (although the original theatrical trailer is included), you do get an anamorphic widescreen transfer--I've never seen the movie look this good. For the price, not a bad deal. I'm not sure what the other reviewer meant about the DVD being too dark; the colors and brightness look just fine to me. As to the movie itself, I always thought it was best described as a screwball comedy on rails. Only drawback (for some) might be that a lot of the comedy was probably unintentional! If you're a train freak like me, you know you have to have it.

SILVER STREAK needs to come out in a restored letterboxed DVD (adding the reminiscences of the stars on an alternative track would be great but seems unlikely given Gene Wilder's and Richard Pryor's health concerns). Sitting down to watch this movie is like embarking on a weekend holiday with a group of terrific friends. You feel the excitement as you step on the train with Gene Wilder's character, and you're off! For anyone nostalgic for the 70's, this has the clothes, the cheesy decor, the innocent sense that saying "dirty words" was naughty and funny, and of course it has Pryor and Wilder -two of the decade's greatest icons. Wilder in his prime here projects a sweetness and grace that is one-of-a-kind, and so endearing. Pryor is at the height of his hilarious talent and skill. Their pairing produced magic. Fine direction from Arthur Hiller following a warm-hearted script by Colin Higgins.

Lady Cop and Papa Crook (2011)

Lady Cop and Papa CrookTwo of Hong Kong's most popular talent and pop stars Sammi Cheng and Eason Chan. For Eason Chan, he is still in the main forefront of cinema and music while Sammi Cheng had been on hiatus and taking a break from the entertainment industry.

"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" is Sammi's return to cinema since her 2005 film "Everlasting Regret" and brings back the romantic comedy side of Cheng and the serious side of Eason Chan films. Fortunately, the film has two talented directors and writers involved with Alan Mak (writer of the "Infernal Affairs" films, director for "A War Named Desire", "Final Romance", "Rave Fever") and Felix Chong (writer for "Infernal Affairs" films, "Tokyo Raiders", "Initial D").

The writing duo wanted to create a film that would feature the cops and gangsters having to work together to solve a case and being stuck in one place.

"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" revolves around a illegal diesel kingpin named John Fok (played by Eason Chan). One day as Hong Kong and mainland Chinese were trying to arrest one of his men, the police chase ends tragically as an innocent mother and her son were killed in an accident. Despite being an underground kingpin, John cares for his family including his pregnant wife and his young six-year-old named Jimmy.

Meanwhile, Senior Inspector Maureen Szeto (played by Sammi Cheng) is known for solving cases and busting criminals. Her personal life is not as great as she has been dating a sculptor for a decade and their relationship has not really progressed. In fact, she hasn't had sex for a long time and she has been waiting for marriage and literally losing her patience.

Both John Fok and Maureen Szeto's path would cross when Fok's son is kidnapped. The kidnappers want $80 million dollars while his family members full of members of the Triad or his own organization want to find Jimmy on their own but Szeto who is assigned to the case, reminds Fok that most kidnappings are done by family members and people they know. Chances are that one of the people in his family have some involvement and that the police are known to solve these cases.

Fearing that his child may be killed, John Fok decides to have this uneasy alliance between his family members along with the Szeto and the Hong Kong police. Tempers clash and even the mainland Chinese police force are not too thrilled that Szeto and the HK police are aiding a criminal organization in their case. Will Senior Inspector Maureen Szeto find the young boy in time?

VIDEO:

"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" looks gorgeous on Blu-ray. Cinematography by Yuen Man Fung showcases an artistic side as he uses colors to great effect. Each scene, you can expect blues, reds and sometime a filter utilizing grays with color bursting out. Definitely an HK film that utilizes HD quite effectively.

Blacks are nice and deep, I didn't notice any edge enhancement or major compression artifacts.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" comes with a crystal clear lossless Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Cantonese soundtrack and also a Dolby Digital 5.1 Cantonese and Mandarin soundtrack. During the action sequences, you can expect to hear an immersive soundtrack with glass break, vehicles crashing, explosions, etc. Surround channels are used quite effectively throughout the film, especially during the musical sequences. Front channel and center channel feature the dialogue and music and for the most part, dialogue is clear and understandable.

Subtitles are in English and for the most part, English subtitles are well-done with maybe two instances where the subtitles translates "$80 million" to "$80 millions" but having had watched a fair share of Asian cinema with bad subtitling, the subtitles for this film are good and easily readable.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" comes with the following special features (note: There following special feature are only in Chinese, no English subtitles):

* Making of Featurette 1

* Making of Featurette 2

* Making of Featurette 3

* Trailer

JUDGMENT CALL:

For those of you who are familiar with HK films, Sammi Cheng has always been an actress known for romantic comedies. If anything, one would wonder since her breakout with films such as "Feel 100%" and "Needing You" if we would see a Julia Roberts style of transition. The ability for her to take on a main lead role outside of her comfort zone and shine.

With "Lady Cop and Papa Crook", Sammi Cheng plays a police officer and you wonder, could this film be her breakout serious role? But with this film directed by Alan Mak and Felix Chong, the film tries to incorporate Eason Chan and his scenes being more towards the serious side when showing him working in the Triad and then you get Sammi Cheng who plays the comedic cop but yet worrying about if her boyfriend will marry her?

In other words, you still get the romantic comedy Sammi Cheng during her scenes and then you get the serious Triad film with Eason Chan's scenes. The film is enjoyable but among Sammi's films, this is not her best but it's her best looking film courtesy of it being on Blu-ray.

For the Blu-ray release, included is the director's cut which has about seven more minutes and the original theatrical cut. The director's cut has a more fleshed out extended alternate ending that I prefer.

As for audio, definitely really good use with the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track. From the action scenes to the music, surround channels were used and even a little LFE.

But I do have one bone to pick with this release with Tai Seng Entertainment. Why did they forget to include the English subtitles with the special features. You have three special features included and although the subtitle option is there, they don't work. Sure, this is no different from me having to import the releases since the HK releases tend to only focus on the main film but I figured with Tai Seng and distributing it to the US, they would at least include the English subtitles on the special features and makes me wonder if other Tai Seng Entertainment releases are like that.

But overall, "Lady Cop and Papa Crook" is a fun and entertaining film. And if you can find a good deal on this Blu-ray release and are an HK or Asian cinema fan, it's definitely worth checking out.

I have come to expect Hong Kong films to be saturated with action, bullets, and general mayhem. If you're looking for that, this isn't the film for you. A gang leader has his son kidnapped, and proceeds to his normal modus operandi of sending his men looking for the kid. But then in come the police, led by a slightly flaky female detective, and our gangster is reduced to sitting around worrying about things, but unable to do anything about them. There are a (very) few fights and we spend most of our time locked up in the gangster's mansion watching a police procedural. It's not an awful film, but it's not very entertaining, either.

Wild Target (2010)

Wild TargetWILD TARGET (2009) is one of the most enjoyable, relaxing and hilarious films I have ever seen. The British have a way with this kind of black comedy that we have yet to perfect, though we try.

The legendary assassin Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy in yet another cool-as-a-cucumber role of a lifetime) is reaching a midlife crisis. He falls for his latest hit, young swindler Rose (Emily Blunt in a role that actually fits her well). As she throws him off his game initially, he begins to like her immensely.

A fateful encounter in a parking garage introduces them to each other and to Tony (a sweet Rupert Grint), a bisexual pothead garage attendant who saves first the life of Rose, then Victor. They flee together, and a sort of sweet madness ensues.

It is not what you'd expect, and were it not for occasional foul scenes (which we can bear with a guffaw) I'd recommend such caliber of comedy for children. Sadly, black comedy of this caliber is not for children's innocent eyes. But here I'll leave this fantastic film, for you to discover and judge.

The cast is rounded out by crooked art collector Ferguson (Rupert Everett, appearing apparently because he needs the work) and the immortal Aileen Atkins as Victor's former-assassin mother and first teacher. (In a bit of a snit, she excoriates Victor for his crisis: "A Beretta! The gun of princes! For your SEVENTH birthday!") Also moving to me was Victor's white cat Snowy, who has the most wonderful MEOW.

With all the great talent here and others whose names I'm too tired to mention, I have to say a word about Rupert Grint. Rupert's a handsome, rising star with a flair for sweetness, drama and comedic skills I have often compared to those of Buster Keaton. Sometimes I wonder if old Buster from Kansas and Rupert from Stevenage are somehow related.

Rupert is the busiest of the HARRY POTTER 'children', with two excellent films under his belt already (CHERRYBOMB and DRIVING LESSONS). This, his third major film with major work to show for it, is his third film off the POTTER reservation. Here's a toast: a long and successful career for Rupert!

And a long, cult-classic status for WILD TARGET ... one of the best films (for its genre) that I have ever seen.

WILD TARGET is an English remake of the French film "Cible émouvante" (1993) which I am now anxious to see. I understand the great Jean Rochefort plays "Victor Meynard" in this original version.

Bill Nighy has a following in my store no matter what the film's theme is, and in this case he plays his age and character beautifully.

The story follows an aging hit man revered as the best at what he does, but an assignment to snuff a young klepto/con-artist played adequately by Ms. Blunt goes awry and the fun begins. It is like a bumbling Stooges act for the middle of the film as he decides to protect her instead, while also apprenticing a hapless young man. Nighy's mom is a little over-the-top by Eileen Atkins who I last saw in the nice film Evening, and the remaining cast is average to overly cheesy. The comedy tried to be dark as the body count goes up, but Nighy carries this overall without letting it get too slapstick.

The Blu specs are solid as the picture is clear, so much so that the background failings can be obvious (can see the rain outside nearby windows when they are trying to make it look sunny, crew reflections, etc.) and the DTS is mixed nicely. The car chase scenes are where the channels get used the most and it surrounds you just right. Unfortunately though Fox once again dumps this BD with nothing extra. The "On Target with Emily Blunt" lasts a few minutes and is immediately forgettable. You really want to have there be a making of documentary or commentary as quite a few questions come up about the production (why he holds the gun in such an obscure way throughout the film, locations, etc). 3.5 for the film and .5 for the Blu specs. Region coded A with English language only and subs in same. A light comedy that does not take itself too seriously, enjoy.

Buy Wild Target (2010) Now

Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy) is an erudite, posh gentleman who also happens to be a professional hit man. Hired to terminate Rosie (Emily Blunt), a pretty young thief, he instead falls for her. On the run from the men who hired him, they are accompanied by a confused stoner (Rupert Grint) as they hide out till the coast is clear.

I always enjoy the wonderful Bill Nighy and he has many witty scenes early on; unfortunately, none of them are shared with Blunt or Grint. Blunt's character is thoroughly unlikable and she has no romantic chemistry with Victor; Grint's drifter serves no purpose in the story, he's awkward, and mumbles his dialogue. The film starts out promising enough as we watch Victor alone, but once the three come together it's absurd and silly.

This is an okay rental, just don't expect big laughs or a plausible script.

I came across this as a complete lark, but found it well-made, well-acted, and pretty funny. The premise is great (what if the best assassin fell in love with one of his targets), and the character development is great.

Want Wild Target (2010) Discount?

Wild Target is an off-beat dark comedy about a hit-man who changes his ways when he encounters Rose, a beautiful woman who was intended to be his next victim. After failed attempts to kill her, he can't seem to shake her, and soon finds himself connected to her. With the mission failed, Victor finds himself with Rose and a young slacker (Rubert Grint), as they are now the intended victims.

I don't mind understated comedy and love dry humor, but this film just didn't hit the mark (pardon the pun). Some comedies work at an understated level, but the story here just seems so stilted and dead in Wild Target. If there is any comedy ,it barely has a pulse, as many of the jokes are mistimed. Most of the acting seems uninspired and the script really lacks anything creative.

I differed from most in that I detested the film during the first half, but it kind of grew on me a little when we find more about the characters as they are hiding out in the second half. What I didn't like was that the resolution felt a little forced, and the main character's transformations a little contrived.

There were some enjoyable moments, though. I did think it was interesting to see Rubert Grint in a different kind of role, and there are moments when Victor actually is a bit of a sympathetic character. Over all, though, Wild Target is a bit average.

This movie took a lot of flak from certain critics... who wouldn't know a good time if it bounced a ping pong ball off their head.

This movie didn't get the wide release it deserved. Horrible comedies are released nationally every month and very few have more laughs than Beer League. It just may end up gaining some post-DVD release notoriety, such as "Office Space" did a few years ago. This movie needs to be judged *as a comedy*. That is to say, it really isn't fair to criticize the intricacies of the plot. Take it for what it is: A good, raunchy, R-Rated comedy with enough great one liners and sight gags to entertain you for 90 minutes.

When Ralph Macchio's character orders an overly healthy lunch in front of his regular-guy Jersey buddies, who wouldn't laugh when Artie says, "In Massachusetts that order could marry a dude."?

By the way, it's easy to spot the Opie And Anthony losers that have come here to crap on this. They're the ones speaking broken English and have "Hoo Hoo" somewhere in their name or message.
