Cat Run (2011)

Cat RunI did not think this movie would be as good as it was. The characters were very good actors and believable for the most. I will say to stay away from this movie if you are offended by nudity as there is full frontal nudity within the first 10 minutes.

Very much a "R" rated movie Very entertaining, Good story, Very very funny. I have watched it several times now.

This movie has a Gotcha vibe but much darker.

If you like movies that are part dark comedy and part action you will like this. It has a feel that it could really happen considering how some politics are done.

The actors are great, casting was spot on.

The extras were a little lacking but overall a must see.

Whew! OK, it begins with a plethora of gratuitous nudity, and the characters have to be introduced with profiles, I guess so we can keep track. A whole lot of gratuitous violence and killing follows. Then, it has its comedic moments, and the whole picture starts making sense after about an hour. If one is patient enough, there's a really great movie here. Good guys are bad, bad guys are good. Remember, this movie requires patience--unless one's in it for the nudity and violence.

Very funny movie mish mash of multiple genres into one fun ride! Janet McTeer's performance is unforgettable. Tony Curran plays a great villain; Paz Vega... well... she's a killer. Scott & Alphonso make a very funny duo.

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? (2007)

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? My husband and I enjoyed this film very much and we both agreed that Perry done a great job with this film. Though he continues to put out films with an obvious "stagey" feel to them that don't work as well as they should even though they do work better than one would expect. In his second feature film without the Madea character, Perry again brings one of his stage plays to the big screen with "Why Did I Get Married," a film that works because of the heart and soul of the cast even when it feels like Perry's over-the-top preachiness is about to cave everything in. The film centers around four couples who gather each year at a Rocky Mountain retreat for your basic "save our marriage" therapeutic weekend. Being a Perry production, the weekend will be filled with lots of laughs, lots of tears, lots of revelations, a few heartbreaks and a solid Christian center that without the preachiness that often accompanies such a central core.

Janet Jackson leads the cast as the relationship expert who guides the weekend supported by her husband (Malik Yoba). There's a power couple (Tyler Perry and Sharon Leal), a drinkin'/fightin' couple (Michael Jai White and Tasha Smith), and an obviously abusive couple (Jill Scott and Richard T. Jones). Before the weekend is over, in typical Perry fashion, secrets will be revealed and lives will be changed for the good and the bad. The ensemble cast is solid throughout, most notably a well-padded Jill Scott as a gentle, sweet woman trying to deal with a cheating hubby, and Tasha Smith, who's blessed with the film's best lines and she nails every one of them.

While it's certainly easy to knock Perry's inability to produce anything approaching subtlety, it seems almost pointless to do so. Perhaps because of his lack of subtlety, Perry's films inevitably say things that most of today's filmmakers don't have the balls to say and it's rather refreshing to have a filmmaker actively speak out on issues. The scenes between Jill Scott and Richard T. Jones, for example, are almost achingly painful in their honesty and brought vividly to mind the utter shock of Blair Underwood's domestic abuse scenes in "Madea's Family Reunion."

Other solid performances are turned in by Janet Jackson and Perry himself, who proves he needn't be dressed in drag to be an accomplished actor. Toyomichi Kurita's cinematography is solid given the film's inherent staged feeling and that all of Perry's films continue to be modestly budgeted productions. Aaron Zigman's original music complements the scenes nicely, and, while the production design doesn't quite tear us away from the staged feeling, it nonetheless fits the proceedings well.

Tyler Perry doesn't really need film critics. While his first turn away from Madea, "Daddy's Little Girls," was a box-office disappointment, Perry's modestly budgeted films continue to successfully reach Perry's targeted urban markets and, with a typical box-office in the $50 million range, Perry's future as a filmmaker continues to be on solid ground.

This was only my third movie I'd seen of Tylers (behind Diary Of A Mad Black Woman and Daddy's Little Girls) but I'd heard so many positive reviews about this, that I bought it and I'm so glad I did. I truly enjoyed it.

It is a story blending four married couples who each have their problems. They go away on a couples weekend in the mountains and various senarios take place. It was good to see a plus-sized character in here (Jill Scott who played Sheila), but the verbal and emotional abuse she took from her husband was extreme. He was an outright pig of a man (although he's cute and played very well by Richard T Jones) who bought to this couples weekend, his 'bit on the side'. During the course of a dinner one night, accusations go flying about each of the couples relationships or infidelities etc and it gets pretty ugly. There are break ups and make ups and it is done really well. I thought one of the best actors in this movie was actually Janet Jackson. I thought she was very very good in here and I thought Jill Scott was only average. She isn't the best of actresses, yet she did make us really feel for her and her issues with her husband and her weight.

Yes the movie is a little long, but it is very enjoyable and overall it's well acted out and interesting and a new favourite of mine. I really loved this and glad I bought my own copy so I can re-watch it every now and then. It's great.

I almost always enjoy a Tyler Perry movie. However, there are moments in his movies where the goings-ons seem a bit too far-fetched or too sappy/mushy. When considering the casting, cinematography, and story line, this is easily one of his best films. He gives Madea a rest and we are enabled to see him play a serious role, and have a leading role. My favorite entertainer, Janet Jackson, stars in it, so I can write a very accurate synopsis of this film because I've seen it a number of times (smile).

We are introduced to four married couples, all with problems, some apparent and some harbored. Sheila and Mike, Diane and Terry, Angela and Marcus, and Patricia and Gavin. Mike isn't physically attracted to Sheila anymore, so he decides to date her friend, right before her eyes. Sheila and Mike are supposed to be traveling to meet their friends at a resort, but he tells her she has to drive at the last minute. As the film progresses, we feel and see Sheila's pain. Jill Scott did a marvelous job; she had the folks in the theatre cheering for her. Diane and Terry are at odds about many things; having children and schedule conflicts being chief among their marital issues. Marcus and Angela are easily the most entertaining couple of the bunch. Angela cannot seem to stay sober and her husband despises her behavior as a drunk. Also, he has children by another woman and, of course, that causes strain on their relationship. Gavin and Patricia have the best relationship of the bunch, or so it seems. As the film progresses, they endure their share of hardships that were previously unmentioned. There is a lot of comedy in this movie, but also many serious issues are addressed.

This movie is a bit lengthy, but you most likely won't have a problem watching it all the way through, especially those seeing it for the first time. I enjoy it every time I watch it, and you probably know why (Janet!) 4 stars. Great movie!

Nothing Like the Holidays (2008)

Nothing Like the HolidaysThis is a fun movie lots of hilarious moments with a great ensemble cast. You get the feeling that the actors had a lot of fun when they did this film.

Beside being funny it also makes some valuable statements about family life, forgiveness, healing and accepting our humanness.

An altogether warm viewing experience something there for every generation!

This is an amazing movie. It is filled with such family spirit that you almost forget that you are watching a movie. What makes it so great is that they are so close. The producers really picked some great actors. Like I said doesnt seem like a movie at all. I could watch this over and over again and will be. A great movie to watch every holiday!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Films with the same premise as "Nothing Like The Holidays" are abundant--in fact, I've seen more family homecoming stories centered around the holidays than I care to admit. Generally amiable and predictable, you can count on a few laughs at the typical dysfunction, a bit of tension at the long held grudges, and finally some warmth as mutual understanding and the meaning of "family" send us to the finale. But I'm no Scrooge, just because I know where we're headed doesn't mean it can't be an enjoyable ride! And I was pleasantly entertained by "Nothing Like The Holidays." It may not be a new Yuletide classic but a colorful and committed cast breathe fresh life into rather familiar situations. Alternately touching and humorous, the film ultimately won me over with its heart.

Set in Chicago, "Nothing Like The Holidays" presents Christmas from a Puerto Rican family's vantage point. The nominal star of this ensemble picture is Freddy Rodriguez ("Six Feet Under"), a son returning from overseas service. He's solid here providing a center for the movie. But he's surrounded by many familiar faces such as Elizabeth Pena and Alfred Molina as the parents, John Leguizamo as his brother, Debra Messing as Leguizamo's non-Puerto Rican wife, and Luiz Guzman and Jay Hernandez as his cousin and friend respectively. Everyone does a nice job, but to single two people out--I'd have to look to the ladies. Debra Messing is certainly NOT a favorite of mine in general, but she manages to pull a lot of dignity out of what could have been the film's most thankless role. It is Elizabeth Pena, however, that I most appreciated--a talented actress who finally has a meaty role to showcase her abilities.

Well executed and well acted, "Nothing Like The Holidays" certainly plays as a comedy first and foremost. I think that's where it is on its firmest footing with many scenes being laugh out loud funny. The humor comes from identifiable situations that anyone who has been a part of family gatherings can appreciate. The more serious bits work as well, but only because the comedy has drawn you into the family dynamic. Ultimately I was rooting for this group. And that's really all you can hope for, in the end. I cared for the family and wanted to see where their journey led me. So how can I not recommend "Nothing Like The Holidays?" It's a modest film, and if you approach it with modest expectations--you might just be pleasantly surprised. KGHarris, 11/09.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Nothing Like the Holidays is an urban drama-comedy about a family get-together in the Puerto Rican part of Chicago: it was entertaining, it was funny, it was boring, it was good, it was so-so, it was warm-hearted, it was lively, it was dull, it was clear, it was confusing...this movie was just ALL OVER the place! While I enjoyed being introduced to each character and their own storyline, and then watching them all come together for a Puerto Rican family Christmas, there was just too many of the multiple plot lines all over the place, making it an enjoyable movie because of the humor, but unenjoyable because it took a lot of 'work' (i.e. brain power) to enjoy the movie! I think Christmas movies should be fun, entertaining & meaningful!

For those of you who are concerned about content, I would not call this a family friendly film: it's PG-13, and it earns its rating: there is quite a bit of language, and plenty of references to drugs and sex...not kid friendly.

I enjoyed this holiday film, but I doubt I would ever watch it again: I tend to watch Christmas movies over and over again, but this one just doesn't make the cut: it was good, but not great, a familiar story but not told well, with great acting performances and a 'bleh' storyline...enjoy if you must!

I really wanted to love this move... and while I think it has a great cast of Latinos/as, it just seemed like a drama one would find on tv. The script just wasn't all that great... and except for the music and the one scene where the neighborhood residents parade through the streets singing a latin-tinged holiday carol, it struck me that this movie wasn't all that latin in flavor. It just seemed to be a script which could have easily been cast with all African-Ameicans (perhaps because it was produced by the same folks who did 'Barbershop 1+2'?), or Asians or White folk! The script is not particularly Christmas-y either, it is basically a family 'dining room table' drama set against holidays... and that's been so repeated so much, that it really isn't very interesying. I'm not saying that I won't watch the move each year (I will), or that I hated the move (I don't), but just that it isn't up there in classic Christmas movies that future generations will want to see? I long for a Christmas movie with these actors which will be truly original and memorable, and which shows us something fascinating about Christmas for Latinos/as!
